Curated by gallery director Patricia Rovzar, “Figure It Out” focuses on works that interpret & use the figure to convey a story or a message. These selections communicate distinct narratives that intentionally challenge, or in some cases entertain the viewer. Throughout the ages, the human figure has appeared in art; from early cave drawings such as those found in Lascaux, to the digital images generated from computers. By referencing the figure, and using a figurative language to tell a story, the resulting imagery becomes its own narrative, and the paintings and sculpture in this exhibition focus on creating this type figurative language. These works care less about rendering the figure to exacting proportions or exacting realism and are more focused the shared fascination for storytelling.

Born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Beck studied at the Portland School of Art in Maine. He now lives and works in Albuquerque, and loves to play his slide guitar. Beck’s paintings are inspired by the beautiful saturated colors and dramatic light of the Hudson River School of painters and also by the more sober visions of American life as presented by artists like Edward Hopper and Ben Shahn. Beauty is important to Beck, both in the materials he selects and in the methods he uses in applying the paint.

Influenced by her surroundings in California and the Bay Area Figurative painters, Jones creates a dialogue between her use of color, her application of paint, and her subjects. The figures in her paintings have a quiet and hypnotic presence, while the palette and texture of her works pulsate and buzz with energy. Jones’ mostly female figures are often depicted in transition or moving from one place to another. She was educated at Stanford University, where she studied drawing and printmaking. After graduation, she spent time in Cairo, Egypt teaching art and science.

Marianne Kolb’s work focuses on the human figure in a raw and emotive style. Her approach to painting is spontaneous, mixing color directly on the canvas, pushing paint around with her hands, welcoming the accidental, and letting the image emerge as it will. Kolb was born in a small farming town in Switzerland and moved to the Berkley area in her mid-twenties, where she connected to the East Bay arts community. Largely self-taught, Kolb’s work is widely collected and her work has appeared in numerous publications.

Barbara Johansen Newman lives and works in Massachusetts, and studied puppet theater and puppet making in New York City. Eventually her fascination with the human form translated to fiber art and a long successful career in illustration. Johansen Newman sees portraiture as one part of a far more complex story. Her works explore the passage of time, weaving relics of the past into the design, texture and color of her paintings by playing with surfaces and combining unlikely materials.

A resident of Northern California, Sandy Ostrau has always found the Coast to be an important inspiration to her work. Ostrau’s paintings invoke feelings of solitude or even loneliness in open-ended plot lines. Her figures are based on her own introspective moments and often appear connected but seem to be looking away from one another. At other times, figures seem to be waiting for someone to arrive or for an activity to begin. Whatever the circumstances, there’s always an outcome awaiting discovery.

She completed her MFA at the Hochschule der Kunste in Berlin. Siems’ paintings aim for sincerity, intimacy and openness. Her works are stripped of irony or satire and are instead are focused on the knowledge that life is full of light and dark, sacred and profane, beauty and ugliness, life and death.

Sweet Th in g s Cerami c, 22 x 17 x 14 i n . $4,200.00

Kensuke Yamada emigrated from Japan to attend college in America. To overcome the huge language barrier, he discovered early on that he could communicate most effectively through his sculptures. Yamada’s ceramic figures embody enchantment and he uses gestures, textures and patterns to relate simple, yet meaningful body language and facial expressions. His work begs us to think about a moment in time, rather than its passage.
