TOWARDS THE INTELLIGENT RUIN Multi-use open spaces in Munich

Group work - Patrīcija Helēna Dzērve, Hana Gjikolli, Cristiana Martinelli Supervisors - Prof. Bruno Krucker and Prof. Stephen Bates, Chair for Urbanism and Housing

Buildings of the future should be ‘intelligent’ and have a built-in capacity for addition and alteration. Intelligent buildings should be adaptable, re-usable, capable of being re-configured and re-organised, but they should also have a strong physical presence and be imbued with a specifi c urban character, so that they are a recognizable element in the city. While it may seem paradoxical, it is this strong physical presence, this ‘rootedness’, that allows a building to remain open to new interventions. The architectural ruin is ultimately the physical essence of a building, laying bare its structure when the more vulnerable layers have decayed or have been reclaimed by nature. We are confronted with the primal expression of protection and form in the exposed concrete frame and vaults, and the spatial complexity of the ruins still evokes a functional promise, a ‘yet-to-be-imagined’ use. This semester we were interested in exploring the kind of ‘intelligent ruin’ whose rich figurative structure offers both expressive character and a broad potential for inhabitation – a space available for re-appropriation over time, open to being re-imagined. While exercising an economy of means and being sensitive to the requirements of environmental and cultural sustainability, we wish to find an architecture that reacts to place at both a physical and cultural level, that delights in experiment and whose form of construction enhances the materials it is made of. https://aja-tum.de/en/adapt-built-environment/multi-use-open-spaces-in-munich-i/

THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE BLOCK Test planning in Milbertshofen

Group work - Patrīcija Helēna Dzērve, Nouhaila Karroum, Christian Lippolis Supervisors - Prof. Bruno Krucker and Prof. Stephen Bates, Chair for Urbanism and Housing

The urban perimeter block defines and gives shape to the European city. Consistent edges clarify the threshold between the public and the private domain. The perimeter structure gives definition to the street with facades that conform to some consistent rules and it contains an inner space or courtyard that provides air, sun and recreational space to the inhabitants. The simplicity and directness of this urban figure gives it great versatility in organization and economy of space. Territory is clearly demarcated - everyone understands it – both the passer-by who might judge their journey through the city by the number of blocks they pace past or by the inhabitant who knows that once they cross the threshold of the gate or the porch-door know that they are home.

Riga Technical University ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO LIMITED SPACE - 25 M2 STUDIO FLAT first interior design project

Individual work - Patrīcija Helēna Dzērve Supervisors - Prof. Marts Švēde

Loft flats are open concept living rooms, which are separated with a pair of separating walls. These apartments are very convenient to be conversed into workspaces. They are wide, with high ceilings. Work equipment fits well into loft interiors, which may not be performing as good as in another concept flats. According to the customer‘s requirements: width, large window, covered brick wall, I choosed the planning and style solutions according to the loft flat spaces. The main elements of the apartment are the large factory window, which brings particual natural light into the room, the smartglass glass window in the second floor bathroom and the open brick wall. The flat is in industrial style, with many black accents and balanced with light wood furniture parts. The furniture is open and light for the flat to maintain the impression of its width.

Riga Technical University ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO KAFEJNĪCA ARKĀDIJAS PARKĀ first architecture structure

Individual work - Patrīcija Helēna Dzērve Supervisor - Prof. Marts Švēde

Created at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, this pleasant park is divided by the meandering Mārupīte river which was diverted for the project. A restaurant building and an amphitheatre were part of the original park but were burned down over the years by vandals and never restored. Today, you can follow the course of the river and feed ducks from its banks or take in the view from the top of the hill. Take tram N°10 from Grēcinieku to the Arkādijas parks stop. Arcadia Park cafe is built like an conservatory for plants inspired by the 19 century built gardens and greenhouses on top of the dune built by the the Consul of General of Prussia, Christian Heinrich von Wöhrmann (IV) (1814–1874). Little „Arcadia„ in the outscirts of Riga were growing peaches, apricots, grapes and rare palm species. My cafeteria is a reminder of those times full of present-day ideas and ambitions. A pavilion in Riga, Arkadia Park was made, which functions as a creative cafe with the possibility to expand to the outdoor terrace in warm weather, involving a small conditional stage on the terrace and a working space in the second floor for culinary workshops. During the design process surroundings were analyzed, the organization of the territory was solved, optimal structure of the building developed, taking in account both function and constructive and economic considerations.

if E2 would be deleted

the case of the soon to be destroyed socialist realism building in Elizabetes iela 2

Group work - Patrīcija Helēna Dzērve, Kevins Kaļāns, Patrīcija Lidere, Laura Buka Supervisors - Prof. Edgars Bondars / edgars.bondars@rtu.lv

The area at Elizabetes Street 2 is not suitable for the future national acoustic concert hall to the extent planned by the Ministry of Culture. The new architects and teachers of the Riga Technical University Faculty of Architecture (RTU AF) concluded at the Baltic School of Architecture and Professorship Forum. But what is our proposal for the concert hall if E2 would be deleted? By demolishing the E2 building and creating a new concert hall in its place several problems are solved. It becomes more available for pedestrians, blends with site context, continues to park while preserving all existing trees. By realizing this concept finally Riga would have its new acoustic hall. In conclusion, as Edgars Neilands said ‘If Latvia was a rich country, then I would demolish E2 and make a park instead’, in the proposal the existing small nature in the historical center was valued more than the existing E2 building. The proposal was designed with a great respect to nature, with a complement to the park. The intention was made to integrate the concert hall into urban and green context to preserve the existing values, contribute in unified vision of Kronvalda parks and thinking outside given boundaries of the site - continue the greenery belt through the Riga city center. Other qualities of the water front of River Daugava are added. The form analyses were based on existing and possible people movement. Making integrated organic nature hills with help of a green roof. The new concert hall sits in Kronvalda park like a hidden gem. The hall is not visible from Elizabetes street, standing back with respect to historical Art Nouveau buildings, only a slight vision of the main entrance appears. In front of music school. Waterfront of the canal is opened to public. Public squares are made to, again, continue the park and give accessible, qualitative social space for people living around and to make the concert hall alive during the day not only in times of a concert.

Riga Technical University ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO Acoustic Concert Hall in Riga

Case of Rūpniecības preču tirgus / Turgēņeva iela

Group work - Patrīcija Helēna Dzērve, Elīza Anna Zeibote Supervisors - Prof. Edgars Bondars / edgars.bondars@rtu.lv

The National Acoustic Concert Hall is located next to the city core - Riga old town, by the shores of the main water artery - river Daugava and between the central bus/train station and soon to be RAIL BALTIC railway line. The chosen site is in a currently nonfunctioning industrial market area and is slowly becoming a degraded area. Due to its location, the area has the potential to be the location of a future concert hall. The proximity of the venue compared to other infrastructures has apparently been one of the main criteria for choosing a concert hall venue among professionals. But the place itself is the one that addresses it. Its essence is an enticing public space of the future. The creation of a concert hall here would improve the existing environment and interact with the context of cultural infrastructure and cultural heritage. The context of the surrounding buildings are important landmarks that would vividly describe the way to the concert hall - the central market buildings, the old Spīķeri quartier (warehouse district) - a whole bouquet of feelings. The concept interacts with the context of the existing environment, the integrity of the market, which is symbolized by the use of arches, which can be seen in the architecture of the surrounding buildings, placing it in a physical frame and arranging it.

Riga Technical University INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE Interior architecture for a restaurant in Alūksne Individual work - Patrīcija Helēna Dzērve Supervisor - Prof. Uģis Bratuškins / ugis.bratuskins@rtu.lv

The aim of the course is to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge about the basic principles of interior architecture. To understand the design stages and master the principles of project introduction and formation. Within the framework of the project, complicated renovated drawings of the restaurant 3 counters were developed, a lighting scheme was created, and functional zoning was divided - connecting the restaurant area with a souvenir and liquor store and a bistro for the hotel. The idea of the interior is based on showing what a Latvian personality is. Latvians often describe themselves as cold Nordics. This work therefore shows the cold nature of a Latvian from the charming nordic side. Creating a restaurant „Latvian COLD“. The work uses natural motifs found in Latvia - fog, sea, sand, reeds, wood.

case of the soon to be closed Karstadt department store at Berlin Leopoldplatz

Group work - Patrīcija Helēna Dzērve, Toms Čudars, Noe Misson, Leila Unland Supervisors - Pola R.Koch, Ludwig Voz

Roll out the red carpet! A radical but powerful action, which in the end lives up to the expectations that will help overcome the problems linked to the monofunctionality, and the too important presence of the car in the public space. The aim is to finally put the pedestrian back at the heart of urban design, while at the same time making it possible to rethink a future mixity of modes of transport. This wide carpet then frees itself from any disruptive elements, in order to create a real airy space that demonstrates the strong public intention of the project. The existing ramp is then worked on as the focal point of the proposal, like the golden egg! Hybrid reconversion where chicken is the star of the project! Reintegrate the project with a new productive, educational and cultural dynamic, while strengthening social interactions. Treating this old building in a respectful manner, but on the other hand, with the help of multiple strong architectural interventions, have managed to regain a strong link to the public space, while at the same time bringing this old dinosaur back into the 21st century. Participates in strengthening the already very active life of the district through the use of a wide range of functions that are very much concerned with contemporary societal issues. In this sense, the architectural dynamic formed by the reinterpretation of the classic greenhouse typology, as well as by the additions, extensions and powerful play of colour, provide a new way of perceiving the building. And make it a new strong artefact of the Urban Skyline. And this kind of intervention is necessary to face the challenge of the reconversion of this type of building. https://www.bauwelt.de/das-heft/heftarchiv/24Stunden-Hackathon-Warenhaus-Leopoldplatz-Berlin-Studenten-Uni-Weimar-3599582.html

Collecting Islands: In Search of an Archipelago Individual work - Patrīcija Helēna Dzērve Supervisors - Professor Paul Clarke, Professor of Architectural Design Peter McNie, Lecturer in Architecture

As a foreigner who hasn’t experienced the relationship between a human beeing and an island it was a great journey to get unexpectedly deep in “charting” its landscape, ruins, and coastline. To identify the island through different types of drawings was something new to me but unforeseen natural. It seems that it is the right way to work with an island. Adding the vertical and horizontal conditions of the tower and pavilion gave this project a desired outcome. From the most unwelcoming place to the most welcoming. My building - “the lighthouse” is a contrast to the former hostile police station standing in the most scenic location of Enniskilen. The former police station stands as a reminder of the hateful past, but at the same time it is also a point where two rivers meet, where locals used to tie up the boats for morning fishery, where many postcards were made and sent to friends outside the city. The question is - what is the future of this beautiful but forgoten place, the past of hate or the past before the hate? The form of “the lighthouse ” is derived from the surrounding buildings. It makes it a complete circle. It makes this location closed but also approachable from all sides.. The building is made from glass and polycarbonate sheets for people who walk around it to have the oportunity to sneak and peek at the activities happening inside. If you’re not ready to enter this site, you are able to look at it from the outside. With my project I adressed the problem of Enniskillen not feeling like it is an Island. It is a city, but is it an island? I would like to imagine Enniskillen as an island that you can be eexperienced as one piece. The greenery and viewpoints around the city should be connected to each other - the coastline should be linked for its inhabitans to have the benefit of it.

Apathy Residency HITCHHIKERS GUIDE TO SAUNA

workshop during European Architecture Student Assambly Groupwork - participants of EASA Supervisors - Antti Jäppinen, Tristan Toomig, Maijja Malmivaara, Kasper Luoma (Finland)

Apathy residency is a local EASA event mainly targeted towards building a stronger architecture student community in the Baltic region. The residency welcomes everyone curious about space and holds several workshops, lectures and activities on the topics Valga has to offer. Valga - One town, two countries. Border situation of the town is the inspiration, workstation and stage for experimentation. During the two weeks, Valga was explored- at the moment a shrinking town, whose strategies for the future might offer unexpected lessons. The Given: Sauna Stove The Unknown: Site, Materials, Capacity, Services, Required Accessories (and every other small aspect) The Destination: Sauna With these extensive set variables our hitch hiking journey towards the final destination began. Starting merely with a sauna stove dragged by the instructors from Finland to Estonia, we were staring at a daunting task of intuitively building a Sauna with the grand opening set in approximately 10 days. We are so used to being surrounded by constants around us and anything unfamiliar threatens our consious. Plunging into a situation like this really tests us as designers.
