SHED is based at 91 Division Street in Sheffield City centre. We have our own premises which are exclusively available to young people, and are easily accessible. We have an open access policy and there is a Duty Worker available between 9am–5pm each weekday, except for Thursday when we are open between 2pm–5pm. We will see young people there and then, and can carry out an assessment.

Please call us on the number below for more information about the services that SHED offers, or talk to a worker. We are available from 9.30am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. If we are unable to take your call, an answerphone will take a message and we will call you back as soon as possible.

SHED is Sheffield’s young people’s drug project. We offer information, advice and support about drugs to young people under 19. This includes legal drugs such as alcohol, prescription medicines and illegal drugs such as cannabis and heroin. SHED provides honest, accurate, and up to date information on all drugs. Our aim is to help young people to make safer choices around drug issues, in order to reduce the risks and harm involved, while recognising that no drug use is completely safe. SHED has clear policies and procedures around working with young people and drug issues, following local and national guidelines. We work closely with other agencies to share information, and to develop joint care plans for young people. Some of the teams we work closely with are:

• Health services

• Social services

• Youth Offending Teams

• Schools

• Child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS)

• Other drug agencies

SHED workers are available during office hours to offer advice and information to young people, family, carers, friends and professionals. This could be over the phone, during drop-in times, or by arranging a convenient time to meet.

SHED offers a free and confidential service for young people to talk to someone about any drug related issues. We provide information, practical help, support and treatment, for any young person who is experiencing problems in relation to their drug use. We use a range of skills and techniques to assess each young person’s individual situation and needs in order to provide appropriate support. This may include: • Practical advice and ideas to enable young people to consider safer drug use • Lifestyle issues • Alternatives to drug use • Coping with withdrawals and developing decision making skills • Counselling around self-esteem • Coping with anger, stress, anxiety and depression. We help young people to prepare for coming off drugs, provide support during detox and in some cases provide substitute prescribing. We work with any young person who has concerns about legal or illegal drug use. This can be in relation to their own drug use or that of those around them, including parents and other family members.

SHED provides activity-based workshops to groups of young people. These can take place, for example, in schools, at youth clubs, in residential homes and on training schemes. We also offer information and advice at community events, festivals, open days and other events which offer young people the opportunity to speak to someone on an informal basis. We offer information and activities to enable young people to discuss drugs and some of the issues surrounding them. Through the workshops, we aim to empower young people to think about the role of drugs in their lives and make safer, informed choices. SHED’s work is supported by a team of carefully vetted, selected, and fully trained volunteers.

We recruit and train volunteers twice a year, and are always interested in people who can devote time and effort to SHED’s work. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, then please get in touch.

What About Me? is a project that works with children and young people who are affected by substance use within their families. The project works with individuals and runs a group-work programme that provides support and an opportunity for young people to meet others in a similar situation. The group is not about blame, but helps young people to find the best way to cope with feelings, develop new skills, learn about drugs and alcohol, and to realise that they are not alone.

SHED recognises that all services working with young people need to work with the issues that drug use raises. We aim to increase drug awareness amongst professionals, and to enhance their confidence in dealing with drug issues. We offer an information, consultancy and training service. Professionals working with young people where drugs may be an issue are encouraged to contact SHED for support and ideas. SHED also offers free training courses for professionals who work with young people. This includes:

• Basic drug awareness

• Screening, referral and assessment We are happy to discuss your training needs, and are also able to co-work sessions with professionals, in order to share skills and methods and to help meet best practice guidelines.
