Where is Garrow House?
Who is the service for?
Garrow House is situated in the historic city of York, next to the University and within walking distance of the city Centre. It is set within the peaceful and beautiful grounds of The Retreat, in a pleasant residential area of York.
Our service is for women who are presently in low or medium secure services who want to move forward in their recovery and require support to do so. If you experience problems managing your mood, emotions or relationships, then Garrow House could be for you. If as a consequence of past trauma you have developed unhelpful coping strategies like self harm, an eating disorder or substance misuse then we can help.

Who provides our service? It is a joint partnership between the Retreat and Turning Point, known as “Northern Pathways” which has close links with local Trusts and Community services. The service is being commissioned by 14 Primary Care Trusts across Yorkshire and The Humber. Turning Point is the UK’s leading health and social care organisation, providing services for people with complex needs, including those affected by drug and alcohol misuse, mental health problems and those with a learning disability. Established for over 40 years, Turning Point services now span across England and Wales. Their expertise across a range of areas means they are skilled in providing services directly to people with multiple issues that other organisations can find difficult to support.

The Retreat is a not-for-profit specialist mental health provider, working with the NHS to provide care for people with complex and difficult needs. The charity was established over 200 years ago. They have a reputation for excellence, providing care of the highest standard and quality. Relationships are based on respect, dignity and tolerance and patients are kept safe and secure through strong therapeutic relationships. The Retreat provides a range of mental health services which fall into four main categories; Specialist Adult Services, Specialist Older People’s Service, Complex Mental Health Recovery Services, and Psychological Therapies (Outpatients).

What makes our service different and how can it help you? Garrow House has been shaped by the views of service users like you. In 2005 and 2006 the “Women’s Involvement Project” did an extensive piece of work with existing forensic mental health service users from Yorkshire about what they wanted from a service. Their views have had a strong influence on the development of the service. It is not a purpose built hospital unit, but a listed building renovated to provide safe, high quality, en-suite accommodation with a homely community feel. It has high staffing levels to provide meaningful relationships and encourage women to take part in local community resources and opportunities. Garrow House is a place where your opinions will be valued
and acted upon. Care packages will be individually tailored to meet your needs. This may include counselling for trauma, attending a course or pursuing your own interests and life goals. Garrow House is a Department of Health pilot which will be independently evaluated with a strong emphasis on working closely with service users and staff to identify what works. The staff team at Garrow House are expected to be able to demonstrate in their practice that they understand the needs of women who may have a history of trauma. They will receive specialist training and supervision. They will be expected to explore their own emotional responses to the work enabling them to work in partnership with you.

The philosophy of our service is one of recovery and empowerment. The women who live at Garrow House will be encouraged to take as much responsibility for their mental health as possible. Their ability to support others and contribute to the welfare of the whole community will be valued.
Recovery will be enabled by providing support in the following areas:
When does our service open?
• Social and recreational activities that support the development of empowering relationships.
We’ll be opening in February 2009.
• Education and training leading to voluntary or paid employment.
How long might I stay?
Our multi disciplinary team includes input from doctors, nurses, psychologists and occupational therapists. There will also be a high number of support staff who can ensure you are supported in accessing community facilities.
• Developing independent living skills.
• Support with family issues, including coming to terms with loss.
• Complementary therapies.
It is envisaged that you will stay between one and three years, but one of the aims of the service is to support you in integrating back into independent living at a pace you can manage.
• The provision of medication at the lowest level possible for therapeutic benefit and without suppressing feelings. • Managing physical and sexual health. • The reduction of self harm by the provision of training and therapy that helps women develop more healthy coping strategies. This includes support to manage emotions more effectively, increasing self esteem, confidence and assertiveness. • Spiritual wellbeing and a sense of identity.
