The Smithfield approach
Smithfield Services: breaking the cycle of drug and alcohol addiction
Smithfield Services enable people to make positive life choices in order to move on from a history of substance misuse and turn their lives around. Our approach is based on the belief that only by supporting people through the psychological and physical crises that accompany alcohol and drug withdrawal, can they regain stability within their own lives and move towards setting new and positive long-term goals. Our philosophy is built on strong organisational values. We believe that individuals can overcome their problems with support, encouragement and a holistic approach to treatment, and all our clients are given help and encouragement to set goals and begin making realistic plans for their future. We do this by working in partnership with our clients, other treatment providers and community services.

Our treatment programme The detoxification service We provide 32 in-patient beds offering detoxification/stabilisation and reduction interventions for clients with a drug or alcohol dependency. Our aim is to provide a flexible and responsive service, designed to encourage the client to reach a point where they feel able to make meaningful decisions about their life and take action to address their problems. Our service model is clinically-led so that our clients benefit from 24 hour nursing cover, as well as safe and effective treatment using evidence-based interventions. As well as this, all service users participate in a holistic treatment programme including care planning, care reviews, group work and social activities. Individual and group support Every client is encouraged to develop a support plan based on their unique needs and circumstances allowing them to set realistic goals and targets. Other agencies, carers, or family members may be included in the plan, depending upon the needs of the client. Clients are encouraged to learn from others with similar experiences through a broad range of groups and social activities. A range of complementary therapies provide individuals with new experiences and an introduction to an alternative lifestyle.
Alcohol/drug detoxification By offering both drug and alcohol detoxification services, Turning Point Smithfield Services offers clients a unique opportunity to consider giving up both substances. Our person centred approach means our clients have choice and direction in their care and support they receive from us, and we work with clients and referrers to plan the best way of undertaking their detoxification from both drugs and alcohol. Discharge planning We ensure that all clients have a clear care plan that will take them beyond detox to make sure the client is supported following their discharge. We engage with a wide range of partner agencies within the community – health, legal, housing and social care – to ensure our clients can access their services for advice, information and support. We also ensure effective care management links with drug and alcohol teams, as well as family and/or carers.
