Geography Field Trip
Malaysia 2007
5A Victor Wong It was a long time since my last tour to Thailand. We met our tour guide at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Although she gave us a funny introduction about herself on the coach, I still found it hard to remember the long and clumsy pronunciation of her full name. She’s called Fallina. Fallina talked a lot on the coach. Then, we stopped over the Butterfly Park when we were on the way to Malacca. Though it’s a bit boring in the park, I was fond of feeding those lovely birds. For dinner, it was simply out of my expectation that the dishes are very “Chinese”. I would rather prefer more local cuisines. At night, it is enjoyable to shop in a large supermarket near our hotel and then have a “fruit party”. It was the first time for me to enjoy such a large variety of fresh and luscious fruits from the tropical areas. It was exiting to visit a local secondary school in Malacca. We found that the students there were friendlier than I’d expected. They were active and passionate to give us an interesting guided tour in the school campus, which was very meaningful and fruitful. It’s a pity to finish the city tour in Malacca in a rush. Then, we reached Kuala Lumpur, which was entirely another world. It is the capital city of Malaysia. Mixed land use, lack of recreational facilities and open space, overcrowded buildings as well as deteriorating living conditions are characteristics of this LDC (Less Developed Country) city. To a certain extent, Kuala Lumpur is similar to Hong Kong. Streets are packed with busy pedestrians and traffic is absolutely busy. This is really very stressful. Arriving at the landmark of Kuala Lumpur, the Petronas Towers, we couldn’t help screaming for joy. However, we were not allowed to visit the skyscrapers and have a bird’s eye view of the whole city. I was greatly disappointed for just visiting a shopping mall next to the towers. It was no difference of shopping in the Times Square in Hong Kong. The most impressive activity of the whole journey was the visit to the Forest Research Centre. It was definitely inspiring to us who are just urban dwellers in a concrete forest. Disappointingly, the walking tour in the rainforest was too short and we couldn’t learn much from it. I think that the travel agency did not plan the itinerary well. I prefer more geography-related activities instead of visiting so many museums learning about the local history and culture. I would like to learn more about the urban planning, urban problems and solutions in Kuala Lumpur. Moreover, our tour should put more focus on understanding the rainforest and the local industries. In short, the tour can help me to know more about Malaysia. This also broadens my horizons, trains our self-discipline, and of course, arouse my interest in studying Geography.

GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP
MALAYSIA 2007

From 12/7 to 16/7, I joined the overseas field trip to Malaysia organized by our school geography panel. During these five days, we visited many museums. We learnt about the historical, geographical and cultural aspects of Malaysia. On the first day, I woke up early and went to Hong Kong International Airport by bus. We assembled at the Malaysia Airlines’ counter at 6:45 a.m. It took about 3 hours from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur. Before we went to city of Malacca, we visited the Butterfly Park. On the second day, we visited a local secondary school in Malacca. The students of this school were very friendly. They escorted us to visit various facilities of their school. After that, we visited the Stadthuys, the St. Paul Cathedral and the Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum. These are important historical sites of Malaysia. On the third day, we travelled to the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. We visited the Taman Warisan Pertanian, which is a rubber plantation. We learnt how to collect rubber and use rubber to produce useful things. Then we visited the National Museum, National Mosque and the Twin Tower before we went back to the Hotel. The Twin Tower is the world's tallest twin structures.
On the fourth day, we visited the National Palace, Merdeka Square, a tin factory and KL Tower. In the KL Tower we went to the 335-metre high observation deck by a high-speed lift. The scenery of there was very magnificient. On the fifth day, we visited the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia. We learnt the characteristics of Tropical Rain Forest. After that, we went back to Hong Kong by plane. During this trip, I learnt something useful outside classroom. I enjoyed this trip very much. I will join the trip organized by the geography panel in the next year.
