From unrefined to refined, areas of the building both exterior and interior are designed to express the program inside. In addition, master planning efforts to revitalize the lower junction into a cultural hub via the integration of a public corridor from Bloor to the museum of contemporary art, and mixed-use buildings north of the building.

ARC620 Integration Studio II January 2019 Lasercutting, Woodcutting, Modelmaking, Crafting

A continuation of the previous semesters work, myself and a partner built a 1:200 scale model of the OCAD U Satellite Campus Proposal: Art Factory, however with new ideas implemented in the overall design. A jagged atrium throughout the floors and sawtooth roofs that face north were explored within the model. The idea was to bring more diffused light into the lower floors as well create opportunities for the different programs within the building to collaborate around the jagged atrium, via the sight lines and unique space.

Nature Pavilion was designed to blur the lines between the exterior and interior environments. The projects intended usage was to be a learning space for children with neurological diseases attending a camp specifically for nurturing and safe growth. With that in mind, the interior space aims to let the children experience the outside environment but within a safe, protected shell. The larger openings created by the aluminum sheets bent into ovals allow for maximum discrepancy from the outside environment, while Accoya wood structure and decking add softer tones to balance the space and cultivate a natural learning space.

ARC720 Design Build Studio May-August 2019 Rhino, Illustrator, Photoshop, Modelmaking, CNC

Designed by Patricia Diaz and Bernadette Rosano, Nature Pavilion is a study/ learning space for Camp Winston, a camp for children with neurological diseases. As part of the studio, we planned and constructed the Nature Pavilion within 4 months. Featuring cedar lumbar and polycarbonate sheets, the design manifests a warm, comfortable and sheltered experience that both gives views to the garden nearby as well shade the users from direct sunlight.

For the Boat P4

BOATHOUSE ASC856 The Small Building September - December 2019 Rhino, Illustrator, Photoshop, V-ray, Enscape

AR

M

ER

AT

W Anchored and floating off the shore on Lake Joseph, For the Boat is designed just as the name suggests, the building is built around the boat. Featuring a skillion (shed, lean-to) roof design and a large opening in the center of the building, with the use of industrial materials in an architectural application such as aluminum sheets, steel trusses and steel mesh, and large apertures with thin steel trimming, the design aims to contemporize the idea of a vernacular residential home, and bring its typology onto a different plane, water. For the Boat also utilizes traditional wood frame steel construction, allowing for a light system.

K

No longer burden by a physical context, For the Boat aligns its composition to the water level and plays with views of the lake unobstructed by vegetation and natural topology. The supporting structure to allow it float on the water is an array of pontoons, this

Roof Plan

24

W

allows for the building to float, and depending on the various water levels of the lake, can create different views throughout all seasons. The penetration of sunlight into the project is another main objective, with the use of clerestory windows along the south faรงade, and east facade, these glazing locations stream light into the center of the building.

K

AR

M

ER

AT

Because of the skillion roof design, a high ceiling condition is possible, opening the space, and allowing for the focus to be on the water and too allow the floor of the building to bleed into the lake, as if the spaces are connected, and that you are merely in an enclave. Taking all these elements together, For the Boat contemporizes the traditional vernacular home by bringing it to the water lev - el, using steel elements in exchange to wood elements, and the penetration of sunlight into the building open the space to water, and most importantly is designed around the boat

KINDERHAUS PROJECT P2

PANDEMIC HUT DESIGN

AT

W

ARC820 Design Build Studio April - July 2020 Rhino, Illustrator, Photoshop, V-ray, Enscape

Friends can reduce stress and navigate challenging developmental experiences. In the pandemic, measures have been put into place to limit social interaction, the closing of playgrounds and selfisolation and quarantining when you have COVID-19.

AR

M

ER

For children, making friends is a vital part of growing up and an essential part of their social and emotional development. Attributes such as social competence, altruism, self-esteem, and self-confidence have been found to be positively correlated to having friends.

K

These conditions have adverse affects on children who are sick with COVID-19. Quarantining and self-isolation may be easier to handle mentally and physically when you are an adult, however for children they do not have the same mental strength and perseverance. Kinderhaus aims to give all children a safe space to play, interact and have fun with their friends while they are in quarantine, to continue their growth both mentally and physically.

UNION STATION HYPERLOOP P3

POST-PANDEMIC DESIGN

Union Station Hyperloop project is a study on what transportation will evelove into after the COVID-19 pandemic. This project brings ideas of health safety, proper social distancing and individual transportation as the new way of travel after the pandemic. The tube sytem and pods speak about inviduial transporation, the many divisons in spaces point to proper social distancing and the robustness of the station itself point to a more evolved and organized means of travel now that publioc spaces have been eliminated.

CONTRA AIAS FORUM 2020 STAGE INSTALLATION

W

September -December 2019 Rhino, Illustrator, Photoshop, Modelmaking, CNC

To celebrate hosting the FORUM conference in Toronto, this design takes the city’s footprint and draws attention to the most significant area, the downtown core, through the use of topography contours accentuated by artificial LED lighting. Physically, the stage installation creates contrast through a bold black background for land contours and a more natural finish for the area representing the lake south of the city. The most

outset areas of topography are also given contrast through the use of artificial lights to highlight key nodes of the city. This design highlights areas with high densification or activity, creating a dialogue for the contrast between the densification of the downtown core compared to the outward sprawl on the edges of the city. Density data in the form of an architectural installation from the city hosting the conference ties the host city to the conference as well as its theme, in order to provide information to attendees that are not native to Toronto. Through using visual effects such as contrasting painted elements with natural finishes as well as artificial lighting of significant points, this stage installation design displays contrast while clearly associating the CONTRA theme with the host city of Toronto.

Held together by wood arches and structure, the tetrapod’s sit on top of each other creating a semi-transparent wall. There are three variations of tetrapod’s, steel, steel and mesh and steel and polycarbonate sheets. Each variation alludes to the varying degrees of security and protection however as a whole project solidity and fortification. The transparency allows for dynamic interactions throughout the design.
