UK settlement visas delayed
A number of Thai women with young children are grieving that their applications to join their husbands longterm in UK are still in limbo after a British Supreme Court judgment earlier this year. The ruling upheld the 18,600 pounds minimum income threshold for UK sponsors with partners from outside the European Union (plus Norway and one or two other European countries which are part of the so-called Single Market). The income threshold rises to 22,400 pounds if one child is involved rising to 27,200 pounds for three under-agers. The Supreme Court did recognize that the rule is causing serious hardship to thousands of couples who are unable to meet the figure. About 40 percent of British workers earn less than 18,600 pounds a year. In the wake
of the ruling, the Londonbased Home Office appears to have put on hold applications involving a foreign partner and dependent child whilst it considers the latter’s best interests. Although there are no published figures, it seems that dozens of Thai women are caught up in the new delay. One Pattaya resident using the name Oy, who asked not to be identified as her application is still pending after six months, said “I married my British husband four years ago and we have a daughter aged two. But his income is just under 22,400 pounds a year - the minimum for a Thai wife plus one child. We have already paid fees in baht amounting to almost 2,000 pounds, but I cannot find out anything from the embassy.” Pattaya Today contacted
VFS-Global in Bangkok which said that the “pause” was to enable the government in London to consider the implications of the judicial ruling. However, the spokesperson said that only applications which involved children and had an income level problem were affected. “All the others are being processed as normal,” she said. VFS also made clear that a small number of applications are immune from the minimum income requirements. These concerned British sponsors w h o we re i n re c e i p t o f state disablement and/or unemployment benefits. Another Pattaya wife of a British sponsor, calling herself Noy, said “My husband has hired a lawyer who has researched the Supreme Court ruling. It recognizes that a minimum income threshold
is acceptable in principle, but the Home Office rules fail to take full account of their legal duties in respect to the children involved or to allow alternative sources of funding to be considered.” Noy said she was one of several Thai wives she knew who were in the awkward situation of not knowing the future after more than a year of waiting. The 18,600 pounds minimum income threshold for British citizens to bring non EU spouses to live with them in UK was introduced by Theresa May, the current prime minister, when she was home secretary in 2012 as part of her drive to reduce net migration below 100,000. The 2017 Supreme Court ruling is a blow to campaigners who claim the rule has meant British families have faced a Continued on page 4

UK settlement visas delayed choice of separation or living in exile. They have highlighted the plight of up to 15,000 British children overseas who have grown up as “Skype kids” - that is, they only have the internet to keep in touch with their fathers. A Home Office spokesperson said, “The court has endorsed the approach to setting an income level for family migration that prevents a burden to the tax payer and ensures migrant families can integrate into our communities. The current rules remain in force but we are carefully considering what the court has said in relation to exceptional cases where the income threshold has not been met, particularly where the case involves
a child.” Meanwhile, Thai immigration authorities are hoping that the new 10-year retirement visa will appeal to British men over 50 who are free to move here rather than to wait for their families to move to UK. Charles Foreman, a retired civil servant, said, “With the Brexit vote last year, visas to UK are going to get harder and not easier, in my opinion. I took the view that I would move to Thailand as the best way of uniting me with my Thai wife and two kids.” He added that they could all visit the UK on tourist permits from time to time which was a much easier option than the complex settlement visa.
disabilities, elderly persons, monks, and foreign visitors. There will be five screening points at entrances to the site: three for the general public, one for persons with disabilities, and one for monks. Those who wish to enter into the exhibition’s grounds should wear respectful clothing. (Updated on October 30, 2017: Men must wear
long pants and shirts with sleeves while women must be similarly modestly dressed. No see-through clothes or tank tops, bare shoulders. No sandals or flip-flops.) Thailand increases air access to key destinations across country
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is in discussion with Thai airlines nationwide to boost air access to key destination across the country in time for the upcoming peak season arrivals. Y u t h a s a k S u p a s o r n , TAT governor, recently held meetings with Thai airlines discussing opportunities to boost tourism on both trunk and secondary routes to stimulate inbound and domestic travel from key markets including Europe, the Americas, Middle East, and Asia Pacific as well as from the neighbouring countries. “This is in line with our plan to increase the foreign tourism revenue for 2018 by at least 10 per cent,”
he said. “The increased air access also corresponds with the Amazing Thailand Tourism Year 2018, starting from 1 November this year.” Airlines attending the 20 October meeting at the TAT headquarters included Thai Airways International, Bangkok Airways, Thai AirAsia, Thai AirAsia X, Thai Smile Airways, Nok Air, Nok Scoot, Thai Lion Air, NewGen Airways, and MJet. These airlines recently announced new and increased services. Thai Airways International (THAI) launches a new BangkokVienna service from 16 November, and also partners with Thai Smile Airways to fly between Bangkok and
Kaohsiung from 1 October. From 29 October, THAI will increase its existing Beijing–Phuket service from four to seven flights per week. Bangkok Airways will start flying between Bangkok and Vietnam’s Phu Quoc, and Nok Air will fly direct between Mae Sot and Yangon. From 3 December, NewGen Airways will operate new services to Chiang Mai and Phuket from Korat. These are just a few of the many new routes launched since the beginning of 2017 by Thailand-based and overseas airlines. “All this comes as great news and is perfectly timed, especially since UN International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) recently lifted its warnings on Thai airlines from its website,” said Yuthasak. According to local media reports, THAI is planning more routes to Japan, South Korea and the United States while Nok Air is eyeing expanding its network to Japan and South Korea. Thai AirAsia X is also expected to open new routes to South Korea and Japan.

BBQ PRIME
thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com
The Portions are Big and the Smiles of Diners even Bigger…
This is the latest culinary adventure from Chef Ewan Macglasham who has enjoyed an extraordinary culinary career transversing the globe on boats and planes and private catering to the rich and famous from Sidney to the Bahamas to Panama. As the name implies, the concept of this easy-going eatery is barbeque enjoyment with a menu which spans every conceivable angle and BBQ ingredient. Based on the Aussie open barbie system, the kitchen is fully visible as is Ewan doing what he does best, cooking up a storm. The seating area is big with accommodation for 200 people, covered and comfortable with a solid wood flooring and even a misting system for those sultry nights and hot days. The bar is big and welcoming, just the spot for enjoying casual chow. The beer is icy cold and the house wine very quaffable with some
special bottles available on request from Ewan. This is not only a foodie pleasure park and a play area for kids its also an exciting activity zone complete with hovercraft ATV, extreme sports such as Bungee jumping and even a Human Sling Shot - all can be experienced or just entertainingly witnessed. Who doesn’t love a barbequed sausage and Ewan has half a dozen species to tempt the sausage lover. There’s the famous Swiss Olma, and the German Thuringer spiral quite apart from the good old British banger (B.250) and a herby Cumberland. Slow roasted pulled pork with BBQ spiced apple sauce (B.295) is quite a favourite as are the ribs coming in at B.280 for 400 grams or B.800 for a sharing plate of 800 grams. Ewan prides himself on his lamb whether it’s the succulent 24-hour, the spicy Moroccan or the rosemary and garlic infused leg. For
lamb lovers they’ve all got to be tried. Chicken breasts are marinated in chilli and lemongrass or honey soy and the hot wings, 10 or 20 of the sticky darlings are always seen leaving the kitchen. Steaks, of course are BBQ staples and here Australian T-bone, rib-eye or tenderloin are cooked to order as are the lamb, beef or pork and apple burgers. This is an extraordinary menu, the “green” aspect is not ignored with a collection of appetizing salads from Caesar to coleslaw through Greek and potato with roasted vegetables and pasta dishes. There’s even an extensive Thai menu and loads more on the blackboard. This is such a cool place, families love it, Dads and Mums love it and everyone else in between. It’s so easy to find off Soi 9 Thepprasit Road, look for the signs for Pattaya Kart Speedway. There’s nowhere
in Pattaya like BBQ Prime or more correctly it should probably read Prime BBQ.
Open daily from 12.00 till 10.00 pm. BBQ Prime is located in Soi 9, Thepprasit Road. Tel: 092 4710604.

Mick & Di The Food Lovers
thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com
THE BANG SARAY CLUB A Slice of History The Bang Saray Club has been in existence, admittedly in various guises, since 1966. The foot fall over those 50+ years has been astonishing. This grande dame of Bang Saray has seen many changes but has always gracefully welcomed her guests to enjoy the stunning location, nestled as it is, beside the ocean overlooking the bay with views as far as North Jomtien. Alan Mehew is now firmly at the helm giving the bar/restaurant a new refreshing breath of air with his gastro themed evenings, soon to come Sunday Roasts, daily happenings, and his contemporary menu. In the interests of full disclosure, Mick and I are no strangers to the Club, having lived in the area for some time and, over the years, have enjoyed many parties and musical get-togethers. The menu and dishes have recently been modified so we popped in the other evening to enjoy a tasting menu of the new items. The big horseshoe shaped bar is the ideal place to savour one of the new Light Bites with a glass of icy beer, a wine or two or a G and T from the well stocked bar. There’s a sports bar on the first floor complete with pool table and darts, plus the added pleasure of a most striking view out over the beach and swimming pool. The Chicken Liver Pate (B.180) makes for a first-rate starter or a light snack. It’s a big favourite of ours, rich, smooth and creamy, it has now been embellished with a portion of homemade onion jam. A tangle of sweet red caramelised onions tempered with a splutter of Balsamic vinegar makes the perfect bed fellow for the pate. Chicken wings (B.150), an interesting vodka tempura and the Club Bruschetta are also popular choices from the dozen or so “Light Bites”. Main courses now include a serious plate of fish ‘n chips (cod loin) with crunchy fries, tartare sauce and even a British curry sauce. Two portion sizes for this classic are King and Queen, B.480 and B.390 respectively. The Club is extremely proud of their house burgers. Premium beef, pork or lamb have been fashioned into big juicy patties, the beef option (B.380) is topped with quality cheese, crisp bacon rashers, coleslaw, dill pickle and that luscious onion jam mentioned earlier. The lamb burger comes with mint jelly and yoghurt tzatziki for a twist of flavours while the pork version benefits from an extra spicy salsa. All are presented boarded with big, fresh buns and the clubs toothsome steakhouse fries.
The Club’s steak and kidney pie is another best of British favourite. This nostalgic dish is made with the finest beef, onions and mushrooms and then topped with flaky puff pastry before being baked to a burnished brown (B.380). A classic, this time from across the pond is the Philly cheese steak. Thinly sliced beef with bell peppers and onions and lots of melted Gruyere cheese is served in a panini for a gooey, meaty delight (B.350). Pasta lovers will not be disappointed with Alan’s signature beef lasagna. It’s a winner of a dish and comes highly recommended. A Club menu would not be complete without the “All-Day-Breakfast”. Baked beans, two eggs, tomato and pork sausages are accompanied by either fries or toast plus tea or filter coffee. Don’t miss the specials of the day before enquiring after the homemade desserts which can be relished with a selection from their ice creams. An extensive Thai menu completes the food listings. The Drinks List is a comprehensive catalogue of a dozen whiskies, gins, vodkas, rums, cognacs, tequilas and aperitifs plus, of course, an assortment of classic cocktails to satisfy the most discerning imbiber. House wine, Casa Romeo Italian red or white is only B.110 per glass with Hugo Casanova Cabernet Sauvignon or Sauvignon Blanc coming in at B.200 by the glass with carafes (50 cl. and 100 cl.) at B.320 and B.600. A wine wall of selected bottles is a welcome feature and corkage is charged at B.500.
Admittedly not on your door step (unless you live in Bang Saray), this charming restaurant/bar is worth driving the extra mile. Situated in seclusion on the southerly most part of the beach, away from the village, it is the perfect spot to take a while out of your day, loosen up, breath deeply and unwind with a glass of something relaxing in your hand and the turquoise sea of the bay before you – how much better could it get? “Not much!”, say Mick and I. Bang Saray Club Tel: 063 306 4656. Open daily from 11.00 am to 10.00 pm weekends and 10.00 am to 10.00 pm weekdays. Ample parking provided. Turn off Sukhumvit Highway through the arch of Bang Saray and carry on go through the mini roundabout until you see a temple on your right. Take the road directly in front of the gates and follow it through until you reach a white wall on your right with the Bang Saray Club logo and there you will see the entrance to the club. Visit www.thebangsaraybeachclub. com or www.facebook.com/ bangsaraybeachclub or email mail@ thebangsaraybeachclub.com.

Plus a furnished patio beside the verdant tropical garden. Hyatt Regency boasts 213 rooms and suites over an area of 64,749 square meters covering secluded ponds, lagoons, interconnecting free-form swimming-pools and bridges overlooking palm trees, immaculate lawns and a 315-meter white sand beachfront. “Location, location, location” as Mr. Hilton supposedly once said. This property has the location, far from the madding crowds. Hyatt Regency Hua Hin architecture concept is cluster-style low rise accommodations, restaurants, 24-hour fitness center, THE BARAI Residential Suites and Spa, and the beach. Close to everything. No buggies (golf carts) needed! As the sun softly sets over the Gulf of Siam we enjoy the 'Sundowners” at the Regency Club. On international cruise liners they have captains dinner. Here we're invited to the General Manager dinner with the affable, veteran German born hotelier, GM Christian Wurm at McFarland House a restored, colonial two-storey 19th century pavilion, spectacularly transformed into an airy beachfront bar and casual dining area. On the menu chef's special “Surf & Turf” a premium quality delectable Australian Black Angus beef tenderloin steak combined with local wild-caught sand lobster paired with a glass of

Australian Shiraz or Chardonnay accompanied by summer gazpacho, sauce béarnaise and a selection of side dishes. And the dessert to die for: Young coconut-lemongrass crème brûlée. The setting: tranquil and pleasant like the warm tropical night with the tidal waves rolling gently from the Gulf. I see families, couples; tourists and locals. Senior citizens and millennials conversing, smiling, enjoying their time. The cuisine, presentation, everything absolute perfection. Plus personal and attentive table service. Compliments. Chapeau! To Chef Ryan Dunn executive chef, his team and the McFarland House staff. Next day breakfast. Club Lounge, again. A delicious spread of fresh pastries, breads, meats, cheeses including fresh salads and a variety of juices etc. I opt for muesli, yoghurt, bread & cheese and a fluffy omelette on the side. Noodles and salad for Madame. Freshly brewed coffee for both of us, especially me. My favorite is the “Cappu-Spresso”. One cappuccino, (hot, of course) and one single shot espresso. Instructions: pour the espresso into the cappuccino. Voila! Now, your cappuccino has got some character, some stamina. Sometimes, after a big wine dinner I need a “Cappu-Spresso-Turbo” (supercharged) with two espressos!

And fresh carrot juice 500 ml. After le petit dejeuner, as the French say. We hang out at the “Le Club”. A relaxing venue. Almost like a painting: the pond, the pool with a lush garden and the beach as a backdrop. More coffee and browsing, scanning of the local newspapers and magazines. Thai, English including German and French publications; Le Monde, Der Spiegel and my favorite CONDE Nast Traveller magazine. There's also the mini paper-back library with English Dutch, Danish, German, Japanese and Finnish language crime fiction, historical oeuvres and romance. And of course, the complimentary high-speed WiFi and QR app for more newspapers and magazines online. Time for walk around the large property with all the fountains and water features, flowers and plants. Everything spick and span. Kudos to the hotel gardening team. Next private beach. We arrive with paper-back novels, magazines, iPhones. Hats and shades on our heads and me carrying a pair of Chinese binoculars around my neck. Survey the perimeter first. fairness-fitness-finery Thread Lift
by Dr Natnicha Loichuen
Thread lift is a minimally invasive rejuvenation technique used for repositioning sagging cheeks, lifting sagging eyebrows, and adjusting asymmetric brows and face. The thread lift system works by gently lifting sagging facial tissue in an upward direction, thus producing a fresh, relaxed and more youthful appearance while preserving and enhancing the natural contours of your
face. Thread lift uses extremely fine surgical sutures to lift and support the droopy areas of the face, brow and neck. The threads have tiny barbs that grasp onto and lift the soft tissues. The threads are inserted in position and once in place, the tiny barbs are gently opened which then lifts and repositions the underlying facial tissue into a more vertical and youthful position. The end of the thread is then cut and knotted, allowing it to retract deep under the skin. The threads then remain under the skin to provide structure and support. They are inserted via a tiny incision behind the hairline so there are no visible scars. They cannot be felt and are clear so that they are not visible once they are in place. Once in position, your body generates new collagen bundles that surround each thread to maintain the lifting effect. The exact placement of the threads will vary from patient to patient.

Release Date November 2, 2017 Lead Actors Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett Director Taika Waititi Genre Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi Thor will arrive in Asgard after hearing about trouble in his home world, and when he arrives he finds Loki’s style of ruling has led to some lapses in the rules and leads to the freeing of prisoner Hela. Thor and Hela naturally come to blows when they meet, which sees Thor “blasted” to Sakaar. There he meets Valkyrie, who is hiding out on the planet, and brings him to the Grandmaster to make him a gladiator, where he meets the most popular competitor in the arena, The Hulk, and loses his trademark hair and hammer.
Usually only one procedure is needed to achieve the desired lifting effect. The length of time the results last varies depending on the age of the patient at the time of the procedure, the degree of sagging, and the number of threads used. Additional threads may be added as needed. Risks and complications with the thread lift are uncommon and usually easily rectifiable. The actual thread is made from proven materials which have been used in all dissolvable sutures devised for sewing wounded blood vessels. These are modified as to resemble a fishbone with very small (almost invisible) and duly directed swells. In general, the best candidates for this procedure include both women and men in their 30s through their 60s who want a more youthful appearance, but do not want a conventional full facelift or brow lift procedure. Why is Silhouette Soft® innovative? • Immediate natural lift. • Progressive restoration of collagen • Entirely re-absorbable component • 30-minute procedure • No incision • Long-lasting effect for up to 18 months • Tailor-made treatment

Unique Workout Every person has a unique set of needs or goals, such as weight loss, increased muscle mass, or improved cardio health. Personal training uses a variety of exercises to create a personalized plan that will be much more effective than simply walking on a treadmill for a half hour. Trainers can also make modifications in a workout to meet individual needs, such as leg pain, or low muscle mass. Trainers will also be more knowledgeable about which machines, weight, and reps you should be doing. They can uniquely tailor each session to help you meet your goals and get you acquainted with workouts you’ve never tried before. Using incorrect form when working out can strain and pull muscles and put an increased workload on the joints. Personal
trainers have the knowledge to teach correct posture and form with all exercises, especially strength training exercises that can be very taxing on the body. This will keep your gym time safe and enjoyable. Personal trainers can do much more to inspire you to succeed in your workouts. They can provide the burst of motivation it takes to get you to the gym and get you on your way to meet personal health goals. While a solo workout can be a great option during some periods of life, you may find that visiting a personal trainer for a month or two can kick start a healthy life.

Property Are Things Really Getting Any Better Yet? There are all kinds of pricing indicators that have surfaced over the years to help us gauge the economy and determine how we are doing financially. Just two years ago I revealed my own economic indicator which I called the ‘Sign Board Index’ (SBI). Pricing trends normally are measured for modern wholesale markets, manufacturing industries and commodities markets by what is known as the Producer Price Index (PPI)--the international industry standard for imparting pricing fluctuations and, more importantly, pricing and economic trends. Then there is something called the Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), which is an economic theory--a technique used to determine the relative value of currencies. When one wishes to understand these pricing trends and/or changes in relative currency values as concerns modern wholesale, manufacturing and commodities markets, it’s the PPI and PPP that can answer the big questions. But what about the guy on the street? You know, the average ‘Joe Consumer’ who might be your neighbor, friend or co-worker. Just how does he or she really know how things are going in their local economy? Many in our society and throughout the world are unable to decipher or apply such concepts as the PPI or PPP. Most people ask very simple questions such as: Are things getting better? Are things getting worse? And just how bad is it? So how can we simplify economics to a level that the average person can understand and appreciate? Well nearly 30 years ago a clever American pricing standard known as the Big Mac Index (BMI) was introduced in The Economist. The Pam Woodall creation was a tongue-in-cheek illustration that was so well received that the prestigious magazine has reprinted an updated version every year since. You may not have heard of Pam Woodall, but I’ll bet you’ve heard of her ‘Burgernomics’! Thailand has its own pricing
index parody introduced by Achara Deboonme. According to Achara’s version of the Big Mac Index (BMI), the average price of a Big Mac in America when she published her Thai economic indicator in July 2013 was US $4.56, while in Thailand it was 89 baht--or $2.85 at the exchange rate of 31.27 per dollar at that time; the BMI suggested that the Thai baht was undervalued by 37.5 per cent. The BMI allows economists the world over to easily compare international currencies and their relative strengths, i.e., the purchasing power of one country versus another by the price of a Big Mac in local currencies. Taking the concept to the next level in Thailand, Achara devised her own clever insight into pricing parity within the Kingdom, calling it the Isaan Somtam Index (ISI). Her new metric in determining the purchasing power parity of the Thai people is based on the price of somtam, known to most foreigners as papaya salad. Using the BMI or ‘Big Mac Index’ formula to compare the price of somtam in each province of Thailand, Achara determined that the cost of living in Phuket based upon her Isaan Somtam Index (ISI) was the highest in the country. Yes, economically things are getting tough almost everywhere with almost no country unaffected. Having said that, according to the Associated Press, a little over two years ago we witnessed a shocking American newspaper headline, ‘The burger chain that put "supersize" into the American vernacular is slimming down: For the first time in more than 40 years, and perhaps ever, McDonald's says the number of U.S. restaurants it has is shrinking’. Now that is an economic indicator that everyone in America can understand and relate to, but what about Thailand? The popularity of a burger in America is about equivalent to that of a bowl of noodle soup in Thailand. So a little over two years ago Thailand witnessed its own surprising headline: Mama brand instant noodles sales drop for the first time in 42 years.
by Clayton Wade Managing Director
Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd. clayton@premierinternational.com
The article went on to say that sales of Mama brand instant noodles dropped 0.3 percent in the first four months of 2015, the first decline ever in company history. Now that’s an economic indicator that everyone here--rich or poor--can understand and relate to. Pam Woodall’s Big Mac Index and Achara Deboonme’s Isaan Somtam Index demonstrate that there are easier and less confusing methods to measure the state of local economies. Well at that same time a little over two years ago Clayton Wade came up with his own economic indicator: the Sign Board Index. I had been researching this phenomenon for many months while driving back and forth to Bangkok a couple of times every month, and I had determined for without a doubt that the Thai economy was not going in the right direction yet; it had not yet hit rock bottom either. On June 15, 2015, as I drove past the last 40 signboards on the motorway (Highway 7) before reaching Pattaya, I counted 19 that were blank. That represents an SBI indicator of 47.5 percent. That’s right; nearly half the sign boards were completely empty! If that was not a certain indication of what our economic situation was, I don’t know what was. I felt strongly that this very simplistic signboard phenomenon was a reliable economic indicator that was literally staring us in the face. My Pattaya Today column that month ended with, ‘The next time you find yourself driving down the motorway to or from Bangkok and happen to ask yourself ‘Just How Bad is the Economy…’ start counting those empty sign boards and calculate Clayton Wade’s ‘Sign Board Index’ and you will have a pretty good idea ‘Just How Bad the Economy is’! Well that was two years ago when the economy didn’t look great; it wasn’t. And it continued to get worse. A year later Clayton Wade wrote two consecutive articles on how the Thai economy was

beginning to show clear indications of moving in a positive direction. After the long and difficult downward economic trend that most of us have experienced on the Eastern Seaboard, believing that the local economy was getting better was a bit more positive than a few of my readers could imagine. Several readers questioned my sources as they found it hard to believe that the proverbial ‘economic silver lining’ just might be shining down on us…finally! Then it dawned on me: Let’s try my SBI once more and see what we could glean. So there I was driving down the motorway once again, counting empty signboards. I did my first survey on June 30 with impressive results. I counted 16 out of 40 signboards without advertising. That represented an SBI indicator of 40 percent. That’s right; an improvement year-on-year of 7.5 percent! I have always written my articles with a strong sense of responsibility, and when it came to reporting on the recent condo oversupply and eventual condo market crash, I did so because I saw it coming and I saw it early and clearly. As a result of that signboard index last year I was excited and when I wrote “Now, I am more than happy to see these ‘hard times’ in the rearview mirror with better times ahead. “All things considered, and

with no unforeseen calamities on the horizon, I think that we have a good chance of rounding the corner and putting this recent Pattaya real estate bust in the history books”. Well as most of us here in Pattaya experienced, we didn’t get too far around the corner; last year was not that much better. 2016 left most all of us in the “Where are the customers? Where’s the money?” doldrums. Well it has been another year plus, and I was once again driving down the motorway last week counting empty signboards and boy did I get a surprise. I counted 20 out of 40 signboards without advertising. That represents an SBI indicator of 50 percent. That’s right, an improvement year on year of 10 percent! Well, all I can say is once more I am excited as there does seem to be some positive movement amongst the big companies with large advertising budgets. Let’s do keep this in mind and let’s keep our eye on the market. You think that Clayton Wade’s Sign Board Index is a joke? Come on, man, this is Thailand, the Magic Kingdom, where last year a panda and an elephant on CNN predicted that Portugal would win over France in the Euro Cup! Let’s see if we can rain a little of that Thai magic down on the Eastern Seaboard property market and bring the ‘Thai Smile’ back to our fellow property professionals.

China National Tourism Administration estimates China’s travelers will take 700 million trips over the next five years. As incomes rise, China’s middle class is looking for higher quality products and travel experiences – such as stays at Marriott’s newest resorts. Earlier this year, Marriott launched a joint venture with Alibaba to help capture this growth by redefining their travel experience. “Marriott International is proud to offer picture-perfect paradises for every occasion,” said Paul Foskey, chief development officer, Marriott International Asia Pacific. “We continue to cater to its ever-expanding customer base by introducing new brands, exciting destinations and unique experiences to its resorts portfolio.” Here are the new hotels the company is opening across the region: Explore Marriott’s Fastest Growing Destination - China The company marked several milestone openings in China this year including The Ritz- Carlton,
Haikou, the brand’s first golf resort in China; the Shanhaitian Resort Sanya, Autograph Collection, the brand’s first property in China; the Element Chongli, which brings its eco-conscious concept and extended-stay brand to the mountainous Taiwoo Ski Resort of Zhangjiakou, co-host of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics; and the Westin brand’s first hot spring resort in Taiwan, The Westin Yilan Resort set amidst stunning coastline scenery. Discover New Properties and South East Asian Charm Marriott International debuted several new properties across Southeast Asia, including The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi, a tranquil oceanfront resort on the Andaman Sea in Malaysia surrounded by an ancient jungle and sheltered by trees. The resort is designed to incorporate influences from local culture to create a private retreat with an authentic touch. A luxurious spa is home to five cocoonshaped pavilions that float above the sea and features rituals inspired by indigenous healing and beauty ceremonies. The Ritz Kids children‘s program brings an exciting array of culturally and environmentally focused experiences and activities for families including a Langkawi Treasure Hunt and Nature Discovery. The award winning JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort and Spa, which opened earlier this year, allows travelers to discover one of Southern Vietnam’s newest resort destinations. Designed by Bill Bensley, the whimsical resort reflects the architect’s vision of a fictional ‘Lamarck University’ with venues that represent school facilities such as ‘Chemistry’, the bar where guests can order inventive cocktails in test tubes.
In Thailand, the newly opened Renaissance Pattaya Resort and Spa is a tranquil beachfront retreat with playful touches while The RitzCarlton, Koh Samui allows guests to focus on revitalizing their mind, body and spirit through design and amenities. The hotel’s design reflects a modern interpretation of the island’s environment with natural materials of ceramic and coconut. Its spa offers holistic wellness treatments, and guests can join fishfeeding experiences in a temperate Swim Reef nestled within the resort. Scheduled to open this month, the Renaissance Bali Ulutwatu Resort and Spa in Indonesia will appeal to families spanning generations. It will offer three pool experiences, a playful beach club with activities for kids of all ages and a selection of restaurants to delight even the pickiest eaters. Broaden Your Horizons in Japan and Korea This year, Marriott has expanded its presence in Japan’s scenic destinations with the openings of five Marriott resorts. Guests can explore the lake area at the base of Mount Fuji when staying at the Fuji Marriott Hotel Lake Yamanaka and admire the white sand beaches and mountain trails at the Nanki Shirahama Marriott Hotel near Osaka in Western Japan. Located close to Kyoto, Lake Biwa Marriott Hotel showcases the beauty of Japan’s largest lake and natural ‘onsen’ hot
springs district, and Izu Marriott Hotel Shuzenji boasts a Pacific coastline location set in the densely wooded hills of the Izu Peninsula. Apart from authentic and distinctive cultural experiences, the five resorts feature integrated digital-savvy online platforms, allowing travelers to switch off yet stay connected. Later this year, the Jeju Shinhwa World Marriott Resort & Spa is schedule to open and mark the brand’s first property in South Korea. Located on Jeju island and part of the highly anticipated mixuse resort—Jeju Shinhwa World, which will include a casino and amusement park - guests will have access to premium leisure and world-class entertainment facilities. Celebrate with a Getaway in the Exotic Destinations of Fiji and Sri Lanka Marriott International opened two properties in Fiji and Sri Lanka in 2017. The Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay marked the brand’s debut in Fiji. An innovative resort, it features the first overwater ‘bure’ bungalows on Fiji mainland which dot an idyllic manmade lagoon. Another exciting new resort, the Weligama Bay Marriott Resort and Spa, marked Marriott International’s entry into Sri Lanka. The beachfront resort, which features a modern take on authentic Sri Lankan décor, occupies a prime location near famous attractions such as the Galle Fort and blue whale watching hubs.

Akaryn Hotel Group, the pioneering Thai hospitality company with an appealing collection of luxury hotels and resorts around the Kingdom, has announced the appointment of Swiss native Thomas Singenberger as hotel manager at akyra Sukhumvit Bangkok, which is set to open in the first quarter of 2018.
A high-calibre hospitality professional, Thomas brings more than a decade of executive level experience to his new role at the 50room akyra Sukhumvit Bangkok. He was trained at one of the most respected hotel management schools in the world, Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne in Switzerland, and more recently held senior positions in the Thai capital at The Okura Prestige Bangkok and Pullman Bangkok Grande Sukhumvit. Fluent in Swiss-German, German and English, Thomas boasts a strong background in food and beverage and understands the sophisticated global appeal of Bangkok as a travel and lifestyle destination. “Thomas’ modern style of management, creative F&B experience, and new concept development background fits perfectly with the energy and

Akyra Sukhumvit Bangkok draws on its dynamic surroundings in an area that exudes urban energy and diversity. Two of Bangkok’s acclaimed high-end shopping malls – The Emporium and The EmQuartier – are within walking distance of the hotel, as are two of the city’s most attractive public parks, one of which is Benjasiri Park, opened to commemorate Queen Sirikit’s 60th birthday with jogging, cycling tracks and a boating lake. The hotel is the closest boutique luxury accommodation on Soi 20 to Sukhumvit Road, which is often referred to as Bangkok’s cosmopolitan artery, and the chosen address for a vast choice of world class restaurants, stylish
cocktail bars, sophisticated spas and independent galleries, including Adler Subhashok Gallery, which is the Bangkok version of its Parisian counterpart and hosts exhibitions by big name international and Thai contemporary artists. Bringing understated luxury and a new sense of style to Bangkok’s most vibrant tourism zone, akyra Sukhumvit Bangkok will present guests with an artistic aesthetic designed to inspire a lifestyle as much as a stay. The hotel will offer casual gourmet dining experiences whilst making the most of its location with
a sophisticated rooftop pool bar serving signature craft beers, snacks and barbecue dishes overlooking the metropolitan skyline. “As a new concept luxury urban retreat, akyra Sukhumvit Bangkok is all about creating an intimate atmosphere in the heart of one of Asia’s most iconic cities,” explains Thomas. “A personalized approach requires a distinctive personality, and with this in mind, the new akyra Hotel will offer guests a contemporary blend of classic hospitality and intriguing experiences.”

Jetstar Asia tops the table in punctuality Local LCC is the only Asia Pacific airline to attain five-star rating for On-time Performance
Jetstar Asia has attained the top ranking for its punctuality amongst all Asia Pacific airlines, achieving a fivestar rating in OAG’s biannual on-time performance report. Based in the United Kingdom, digital flight data analyst OAG, released its standings for on-time performance for airlines and airports twice annually, based on 52 million flights arriving within 15 minutes of the scheduled times. Only 14 airlines achieved the five-star rating, of which, eight are full-service carriers and six are low-cost carriers. Jetstar Asia is the only local airline in Asia Pacific to have achieved the five-star rating, with an on-time performance of 86.4 per cent. With its performance, Jetstar Asia was ranked the world’s 14th most punctual airline among the 390 airlines across the globe reviewed by OAG. The ratings are part of an ongoing accreditation programme that awards all airlines and airports twice yearly based on a rolling performance from October 2016 through September 2017. Jetstar Asia CEO Bara Pasupathi said that the world-
class recognition is a strong testament of our team’s efforts in championing operational efficiency and exceptional customer service. “We have always known that the hallmark for air travel are safety, punctuality and convenience. “In recent months, Jetstar Asia’s adoption of a new customer feedback measurement tool has enabled the airline to use real-time customer feedback to deliver exceptional customer experiences. “We are honoured to be the only airline in Singapore and Asia Pacific to receive the five-star rating and are encouraged that our continuing investments in our technology, processes and people has made travel more reliable and seamless for our customers,” said Pasupathi. Mark Clarkson, EVP of Product Management at OAG, said: “From an airline perspective, while Jetstar Asia was the only ASPAC airline to receive 5-stars, Qantas Airways (Australia), Japan Airlines (Japan) and Skymark Airlines (Japan) were all awarded four stars, with over 85 per cent of flights on time.”
ready to step up to premium brand status
Mazda Sales (Thailand) Co. Ltd., the official distributor and service provider of Mazda vehicles in Thailand, is moving ahead in customer satisfaction after introducing the new MCI (Mazda Corporate Identity) showroom concept, improving after-sales quality and raising staff capabilities countrywide. According to the J.D. Power 2017 Thailand Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) Study released recently, Mazda was ranked second with 827 points, shooting up from last year’s fifth position. The study, now in its 18th year, measures new-vehicle owner satisfaction with the sales process at an authorized showroom center by examining dealership performance in sales facility, sales initiation, sales negotiation, vehicle delivery duration and sales personnel. This year Mazda, with 827 points out of a maximum 1,000 points, finished close to the leader, and showed significant improvement over last year’s 806 points. This is proof of the improvements after going through a countrywide showroom and service center upgrade during the past year. Chanchai Trakarnudomsuk, president of Mazda Sales said Mazda employees are delighted with this year’s achievement. “We are all very happy and proud for being able to capture the second position, after working hard for our customers,” he said. “Mazda continues to deliver our full commitment towards improving our dealer network, particularly in terms of showrooms and service centers under the MCI concept that truly reflects Mazda’s image, helping us to seamlessly connect with the customer.” Chanchai said Mazda had laid out an integrated service system for increased efficiency. The Mazda Activ Service program goes in harmony with the 6 major factors that determine customer satisfaction as follows: • Convenience – Integrates body and paint repair shop, warm
elegant customer lounges plus twohour express service bay. • Fast – Express service bays, parts inventory, express approval for accident repair, quick parts delivery and 24-hour service. • Standardize and Efficiency – Same high standards at all showrooms and service centers. • Price Transparency -Customers are informed of all parts prices, labor fee and scheduled maintenance cost, all of which are competitive against other brands. An important factor that affects customer satisfaction is the sales team, and Mazda has been determined in developing highlycapable salespersons who can best serve the customers. Attention to details and sharing of experiences to the customers also contribute to a memorable servicing experience. According to the J.D. Power study, Mazda’s strength lies in sales initiation and delivery period, and the study also serves as a good indicator for Mazda’s improvements carried out the past year. The 2017 Thailand Customer Service Index (CSI) Study, now in its 18th year, is based on responses from 2,458 new-vehicle owners who purchased their vehicle between August 2016 and April 2017. Before making a purchase decision, Mazda customers study information from various sources including current Mazda owners, and are satisfied with sales and delivery processes. In terms of marketing communications, television commercials play a major role in relaying true customer stories about Mazda, in order to enhance the confidence towards the brand, and making customers feel like family. Mazda is also preparing to stimulate the Thai auto market further during the last quarter of this year. Youth Focus
Putting the Community at the Heart of the School by Jill Ross
The new academic year is in ‘full swing’ at MIS and our students in Key Stage 4 are off to a busy start. In addition to studying towards their IGCSE’s, our Year 10 students are taking a leading role in MIS’s new Community Service Programme, which seeks to promote volunteering and civic-mindedness in our local community and beyond. Under the guidance of their teacher, Matthew Coutts, the Year 10 students have enthusiastically discussed ideas about what community service means to them and formulated a charter of guiding principles to follow in trying to achieve
their goals. Even though many of the students have had little previous experience working in the community it is clear that they are all very excited about their involvement in this type of extra-curricular activity. A discussion about the problem of stray dogs (and cats) in Pattaya has led the Year 10 students to promoting awareness of the importance of spraying/neutering homeless cats and dogs. It is well-known that Pattaya has a problem with feral cats and dogs, and many of the students have their own stories about particular ‘soi dogs’ and how they live.
Many of these dogs end up in overcrowded local shelters and are forced to live out their lives in very unpleasant conditions. Although it is difficult to alleviate the living conditions of many of these animals due to the numbers involved, it is indeed possible to prevent the continuation of this problem through the sterilization of local soi dogs/cats. According to the group, Spray USA, it is estimated a female dog can have up to three litters in a year, with an average of seven puppies in each. Theoretically, therefore, one female and her offspring could lead to 67,000 dogs in six years! The
statistics for cats are even more staggering, with many times this number potentially coming from one female. After learning of the problems surrounding stray animals, Year 10 started a fundraising campaign to help a small local organization which is dedicated to helping care for stray animals in the Pattaya area. ‘Dave’s Dogs’ is run by an Ex-Pat from England who has dedicated the past few
years of his life, as well as his own money, to helping feed, neuter and provide medical treatment to stray cats and dogs. Through his hard work and commitment Dave has looked after many abandoned dogs and cats and has provided funding for the sterilization of at least 50 animals, which as the aforementioned figures suggest, must have made a significant impact on the number of strays roaming
Pattaya’s streets. Over a twoweek period, Year 10 put their plans into action and raised over 8000 Baht by growing vegetables and baking cookies for sale. The money was presented to ‘Dave’s Dogs’ at the Thailand Animal Sanctuary on Wednesday 18 October, where the students from Year 10 were introduced to many of the animals that have been helped by Dave. The students all felt really proud of their efforts to raise money for such a worthwhile cause and feel they have learnt a great deal from the experience. Next up for the MIS Community Service Programme is a plan by the Year 10 students to volunteer their help to a school in Northern Thailand. Watch this space! Jill Ross is Year 2 teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.
10 ways to talk to kids about events in the news Limit graphic images News channels often replay the same event over and over, but very young children may not recognize that they’re watching replays of an event. Instead of an earthquake shown again and again, young children may think that earthquakes are a daily occurrence. Turn off the TV if a traumatic event is shown repeatedly. Limit your child’s exposure to graphic photos, as kids are more affected by images than words. Explain what happened When your child wants to know more, explain the basics. Through early adolescence, kids perceive all events as happening nearby. If they see a picture of a plane on fire or soldiers fighting, they may not realize that they’re seeing something from halfway around the world. Use a map or globe to give your child some perspective. But don’t over-explain Avoid giving away too much information. If your child
sees an image of a wounded soldier returning from the war in Iraq, for example, you can tell her that it’s a soldier who’s going to the hospital to get better. You don’t need to explain where the soldier was, or that our country is at war. Take fears seriously Your child's behavior may change—from talkative to quiet, for example. Encourage any communication about what she’s thinking. Ask her open-ended questions about the event she saw. What did you see? How did you feel when you saw that? Letting her tell you what she saw ensures that you won’t overwhelm her with too much information. Learn together Older children may want to research an event. Understanding more about hurricanes or earthquakes may actually relieve their fears. Research natural disasters online, or check out books about a location that’s been in the news. You may just

replace an abstract fear with a new interest! Be a calming influence When there’s upsetting news, your child will look to you for guidance. Keep calm, no matter what images are flashing across the screen. If your child seems upset, acknowledge her feelings and reassure her that your family is safe. “I know it was scary to see pictures of the war, but there is no war here.” Keep your schedule If your child is upset about an event, keep the daily schedule as normal as possible. This helps kids understand that people’s lives remain normal even when news is happening all around them. Still, if she needs extra support going to bed or transitioning to school, take time to lend support and comfort for a few days. Encourage play Kids often play through their worries or fears as a way to cope. If your child is re-
enacting the news, pretending to be a firefighter running into a burning building, or using toy helicopters to rescue people from a tsunami, encourage it. Only intervene if this play becomes aggressive toward other children. Emphasize the positive After some events, like a terrorist attack, there’s the risk of immediately focusing on the negative, by talking about the
“bad people” who attacked us. Focus on the positive instead. Talk with your child about people and organizations that are helping the people who were hurt. Be part of the solution In response to any event, from a local emergency or a national crisis, ask your child if she’d like to help. Then, find a way to donate money or time, or raise awareness about a cause.
You may not be able to fly a young kid overseas to help build houses, but small local acts of charity may spark an interest that your child can put into practice as she gets older. Regardless of what today’s top headline is, don’t try to explain it away. Take the opportunity to encourage your child to build her connection to the world, one newscast at a time.

This & That Popular Conspiracy Theories Mankind has long believed that extraterrestrial beings of one sort and another might be visiting us. In ancient Greece, Socrates was forced to commit suicide because he corrupted young people with the heresy that the Gods are nonsense. Some have even argued that
Stonehenge or the pyramids of Egypt were built with supernatural assistance. It’s comforting to imagine that aliens visiting our planet are wellintentioned. Perhaps they want to rescue us from the threat of nuclear war or teach us to be brothers in the
www.pattayatoday.net
Aliens might want to eat us alive wider cosmos. Everybody remembers cuddly aliens such as ET who only needed a bit of help returning to his own world. But not everybody is so sure about benign visitors. Stephen Hawkins has reminded us that there are perhaps 100 billion universes, so the chances of extraterrestrial life out there are very strong. Hawkins thinks that we should not be trying to contact alien life but, rather, to be avoiding it at all costs. Those beings from outer space could well want to exploit or enslave us. Shawn DomagalGoldman of Nasa’s planetary science division has compiled a list of plausible outcomes that could come in useful if a close encounter does occur. Yes, we could be lucky. The space creatures could be kind and helpful, but that is not a foregone conclusion. For example, if there is a shortage of food in the cosmos, aliens might even come
here to eat us. That was the theme of the 1980s TV miniseries “V” in which birds and small mammals were initially the favourite food for the carnivorous, reptilian humanoids. However, these lizards took to swallowing people whole for the main course in later episodes. Or the visitors could be bringing, accidentally or on purpose, diseases which our biological make-up could not resist. Humanity could be wiped out when a more advanced civilization released an unfriendly artificial intelligence or performed a catastrophic physics experiment which rendered parts of our particular galaxy uninhabitable. In the most extreme case, aliens might decide to destroy us because we are a threat to them. Planet Earth is fast becoming an environmental disaster with greenhouse gases in danger of getting out of control, leading to a total environmental disaster. “Green” aliens might object to the environmental
damage we have caused on our own planet and exterminate us to prevent our pollution spreading. Extraterrestrials could well be wary of civilizations that expand too quickly as they may be prone to destroying other life as they grow, just as humans are pushing our own species to extinction here on Earth. Aliens could notice that we are now probing space and even intending to populate our nearby planets with our own kind. If so, we will doubtless export our damaging environmental policies as well. Somebody or something out there
may decide that enough is enough and annihilate us for good. So if we do make contact with other civilizations, we should not rush to conclusions about what lies in store. Aliens may just be passing through or curious to learn our languages or feeling lonely and wanting to make friends. Equally, they might come in the guise of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse with only death on their minds. In which case we can all stop worrying about rising prices, the cost of medical insurance and what to do when the pubs are shut.

This & That
Points to Ponder The Thinking Man’s Column By Paul James
The Name Game – Filipina Style
C
hinese kids are happy to adopt normal English nicknames like Jimmy, Charlie, Susie and Lisa. Nothing wrong with that you might think, but sometime soon, the Chinese government will inevitably crack down and jail anyone who has a western nickname, especially if they call themselves Google! Visitors to Thailand are often bemused by the crazy nicknames that Thai girls bestow on themselves, like, Nok, Nee, Poo, Bang, Boom, Oy, Ploy and many other equally baffling names. In some instances, (especially in Soi 6) it seems the naughtier the nickname, the better. One real Thai name is one that often begins or ends with Porn and that can be a little misleading to farangs due to its western interpretation! Some Thai nicknames make sense, some make no sense at all, but most mean whatever you want them to mean, depending on how much booze you have consumed. However, Thai nicknames have got nothing on the Filipino variety. Budding dads with Filipina wives or girlfriends would do well to heed the following advice: Do not let your girl choose the baby’s name. Whether you met the light of your life in the hot and sweaty fleshpots of Angeles, or in the malls of Manila, under no circumstances give her the go-ahead to name your kid, or your little darling is going to grow up with a name that will make you cringe when you tell your mum and dad what name to write on birthday cards. As sexy as your Filipina princess might be, when it comes to naming children, give her a body swerve and do not take the chance that she will call your baby something normal like George, Dennis, Linda or Joan. She will not. Her suggestions will have you booking a flight or running to the toilet if she is ready to pop and you are in another country. “Come on Bum Bum, your dinner’s ready.” Can you imagine calling that out in public to your beautiful little daughter or son? How about your offspring carrying your surname with a pre-fix like Bogie, Pretty (boys are called this also, but they are obviously destined for the seedier ladyboy side of life) or Bum Bum? While you are struck dumber than dumb by that well-known farang disease called love or lust, those names might sound cute, but what if their full names were Bogie Green, Pretty Dick and Cheeky, Cute and…Cocky? Bum Bum Brown? Not so cute! (Photo courtesy Asiafinest.com) Babe is another common nickname in the Philippines, but tends to be met with a few squirms when she - or he reaches forty-years-old. Nicknames are to be found in all levels of society and we need look no further than the Philippines president and his family for evidence. The name that the president was christened with was Benigno Aquino. Fair enough, but he is known as Noynoy. That is not so bad when compared to two of his sisters’ nicknames; Pinky and Ballsy. The mind boggles as to why the girls were called those Soi 6 style names, but possibly, when they were born, they were just hanging around at the time. There is a well respected senator in the Philippines whose name is Joker Arroyo. Does this name instill a feeling of political confidence? That is his official, registered Christian moniker which was given to him by his parents, due to his dad’s love of playing cards. Joker’s brother is called Jack. It is not known if there is another brother called King, or another nicknamed Queen. Dad is obviously keeping an Ace up his sleeve. For some strange reason, champion Filipino boxer Manny Paquiao named his daughter Queen Elizabeth, after his professed love for the British monarchy. That is somewhat mystifying, but it still won’t get him a knighthood, no matter if he calls the rest of his kids Charles, Diana, William, Henry…or Kate. When the Philippines was under Spanish control, the concept of nicknames came into play and later, in 1849, a decree was issued which stated that every Filipino also had to have a surname. Most Philippine surnames are Spanish. Where the hell those crazy Christian names come from one can only guess. Come on Filipinas, give your child a name that can be respected all over the world, stop the boys from becoming prancing little dyed blonde hairdressers, prevent the young girls from becoming overseas maids who are used and abused, especially in the Middle East, and let the kids grow up with a name that every Filipina and western or Filipino dad, granny and grandad can be proud of.
Sex lives of nearly 300 popes revealed
A
new history of the papacy (The Popes: A History by John Julius Norwich, pub. Chatto) is unlikely to bring any religious waverers rushing to the Roman Catholic banner. But that’s hardly its purpose, one assumes. In 506 pages, the author manages to discuss all 264 popes, even though at least one, Pope Joan of the tenth century, was certainly a fictitious character dreamt up by heretics to discredit the medieval church. It’s a remarkable legend of a peasant girl who concealed her femininity enough to be elected pope. However, she was murdered by the mob when she gave birth to a child in the high street. Game, set and match to the muck rakers. About three quarters of the historical popes aren’t that interesting. They were old men who kept their head down so to speak. But attention inevitably centres on the remainder, especially those with a scandalous sex life. The Renaissance Pope Alexander VI kept several mistresses and sired a whole host of children. He even hired 50 prostitutes to cavort naked as they crawled on the floor to pick up chestnuts. After the pontiff’s death in 1503, there was a terrible stink coming from the coffin which indicates he might have been murdered with poison, perhaps by his own son. Same sex scandals were not unknown either. Pius II died in 1471, apparently as he was being sodomised by a page boy. Or maybe it was the other way round. But this papal supremo wasn’t all bad news fit only to print in the Sunday papers. He introduced the printing press into Rome and built what is today known as the Palazzio di Venezia. It is important to keep a sense of balance when discussing sex crazed monarchs. The author also finds hints of homosexuality in 20th century popes which should not surprise us too much. Bachelors do make up a fair proportion of gays when all said and done. The point made continuously in this book is that even the most sinful of popes had a good side. Boniface VIII, a silly man if ever there was, none the less introduced one way traffic lanes in and around the Vatican. Others faced humiliation in this life or the next. Innocent III had his body stolen the night after he died and his decomposing body was later found in a box with those of two other popes. In 1958 pope Pius XII was disastrously embalmed and one of the Swiss guards in attendance fainted because of the pong. Of the modern popes, one of the most likeable was Pius X whose dad was a village postman and his mum a seamstress. He was one of the very few popes to do nothing to promote the interests of his family and his brother remained a postal clerk. This pontiff remained essentially a parish priest even in high office, and he gave The mythical female pope Joan was invented by catechism classes heretics
Pope Paul II allegedly died during sodomy
every Sunday afternoon, even hearing confessions every Thursday. Of course, you needed to know which box he was in to reveal all on the latter occasions. Pius X was a holy man and it’s no surprise that he was canonized. Some popes died in most odd ways. John XXI was killed when the ceiling of his study collapsed without warning and buried him beneath the rubble. Lucius II was killed during a civil war and Benedict VI was strangled by his jailors. More recently, pope John Paul I died mysteriously in 1978 and there have been many suggestions he did not drop from his perch by natural means. Actually that tale is probably not true. If it had been, the truth of the murder would have emerged by then. You can’t keep secrets in Rome for very long. In spite of its coloured history, the papacy has survived the centuries with surprising ease. Not even Hitler dared to invade the Vatican and depose the pontiff though he certainly thought about it. The papacy may have been at its most newsworthy in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries when there were several warrior popes with scintillating private lives. But we have to remember that the papacy in those far-off days was a temporal as well as a spiritual force. There were the papal lands to protect in central Italy, so you hardly wanted a pacifist to inherit the mantle of St Peter. The author is silent on the question of the future of the papacy in the 21st century. What is surely needed is a reforming pope who can bring the Vatican up to scratch on social issues such as abortion, gays and the role of women in the church. It may be doubted whether a group of conservative cardinals in their 70s and 80s will dare to do that when the time comes. If they don’t, then expect Roman Catholicism to continue to die on its feet everywhere except Africa. For whatever reason, it is expanding there even as it collapses in its traditional European heartland.

Bunker boys weekly golf Mountain Shadow After a weekend of rain of biblical proportions with Pattaya flooded in many areas Monday dawned bright and sunny with clear blue skies and bright sunshine. Most looked forward to a pleasant day's golf at Mountain Shadow. The course was virtually empty so play got underway ahead of schedule and proceeded to close without delay within four hours. This difficult course was in fine condition, however, the heat was oppressive and many wilted under the extreme heat. This was reflected in the scoring which was again on the low side.
Geoff Cox enjoying an extended purple patch again took the honors with a round of 33. Neil Carter continued his good run of form to take second a shot back and Alan Sullivan took third with 29. Near pins were shared with Les Hall and Geoff Cox taking two each. We are expecting a big influx of visitors at the weekend so next week's numbers should be significantly better than of late. Results: 1st - Geoff Cox (15) 33 points 2nd - Neil Carter (12) 32 points
3rd - Alan Sullivan (15) 29 points 4th - Michael Brett (16) 29 points Near Pins: Geoff Cox x 2, Les Hall x 2. Pleasant Valley T'was a beautiful day and the few who showed up for a day of golf at Pleasant Valley were ready to take on the well-groomed course that had been reserved for them. Greens were in great shape as per normal when we play PV, Fairways mowed proper although a little damp in certain areas do to quite alot of rain over the past days. But that is behind us now as the day was sunny and shiny. Wish we could say the same about the scores. James Carr came in as the winner, followed by Ken Davidson who just arrived back from the UK, and trusty old Les (eagle eye) Cobban with three closest to pins, also not his best showing but still able to reach the podium today in 3rd place. Results: 1st- James Carr (33 points) 2nd- Ken Davidson (32 points) 3rd- Les Cobban (30 points) Closest to Pins: Les Cobban x 3

Ken Davidson 1 Wangjuntr (Valley Course) Oh how we love to wake up and see the blue skies. We had a better showing of lads today as we hit the road to Wangjuntr, a course we play maybe once a year as the trek there is not favoured by many. Glad we were given the option on which course to play, so we chose The Valley Course over the other two they offer. We felt like we were the only ones on the whole course. No hold ups, no pressure of play moving up behind us. But a tough course nonetheless. Today's honours were taken by Keith Norman who just returned to us from his homeland, welcome back Keith. Followed up by our beloved James Carr with not the greatest of scores but good enough for second place. In third a man who has been very consistent with his golf lately and closest to pins, Les Hall. We are starting to see some of our snowbirds come back to Pattaya and look forward to more. Results: 1st- Keith Norman (34 points) 2nd- James Carr (30 points) 3rd- Les Hall (28 points) Closest to Pins: Keith Norman, Ken Davidson, Les Hall, Geoff Parker
Mashi zero’s in on the monkey course! by Peter Grey Bangpra It was a bakers dozen that headed out to Bangpra with dark threatening clouds overhead, we were not sure what we heading in for. The weather changed for the better and the day turned quite good for golf. We had a feeling that the rain would not arrive as there were plenty of monkeys out with their young. If there was any chance of rain they would not be here. The course is badly in need of some maintenance, grass on fairways was okay but the first cut left a lot to be desired. Golfers were losing balls in the first cut and that should not be. We only had the one division given the numbers, and victory was awarded to Mashi Kaneta who returned with the best score for the day, 34 points was enough to get the nod from the judges. Second place was filled by
Patrick Poussier, three points behind. Third and fourth went to the count back with “Buffalo” Bill Steinmann getting the nod and the prize over Rudy Regenass. Unlucky Rudy you have seem to have no luck with count backs! Results: 1st - Mashi Kaneta (16) 34 points 2nd - Patrick Poussier (27) 31 points 3rd - Bill Steinmann (12) 28 points NTP’s 2 - Not Filled 8 - Bill Steinmann 12 - Not Filled 17 - Alex Field Long First Putt 9th- Mashi Kaneta 18th - Glenn Smith Back at the Growling Swan we enjoyed some cool refreshments (cold Beer), even
though the temperature was quite mild in Pattaya for this time of year. We took the opportunity to welcome back the following golfers: Buffalo Bill Steinmann, Mashi Kaneta and Gordon Clegg. We hope you enjoyed your golf. On a side note it was good of Mashi to ring “The Bell” shouting us all a drink! Well done, Mashi! Alex let D-For off his chain to collect donations, the Swan’s players and punters are a very generous bunch and keep giving to D-For. All are thanked for their continued contributions to assist the needy children of Pattaya. For serious golfing with a dash of fun (and compulsory sledging), the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions. We generally
Winner Mashi Kaneta play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. We also encourage women to play. Contact Peter Grey for bookings or any information on 086 1503 086.

Daryl and the boss, Lek Bangpakong Riverside Country Club (Stroke) Well it rained and rained, in fact, most of the day it threw it down. I walked out of the hotel and immediately realised it was raining when I got very wet, so it was back into the hotel and down to the shop to buy an umbrella. Next a quick walk to BJ’s and all that got wet was my feet as sandals do not go well with a downpour. During our wait at BJ’S we checked the internet to see what the weather forecast at the course was and naturally it said it was likely to be fine, so in heavy rain off we went. The drive up there was not particularly pleasant as the weather varied from dry to heavy rain and as we came off the motorway the heavens opened and we arrived at the course in a downpour. Being smart, we left the clubs in the car and went down to the coffee shop to watch the rain hammer down and turn the course into a series of lakes, there was no way we were ever going to play in this weather, mind the coffee was good. After the best part of one hour the rain slowed and having come so far and noticing the lakes were slowly draining, we made the decision to play. It was obvious we were going to get our feet wet but it would not be the first time. The decision was made to ‘Lift, clean and place through the green’ in the hope we could actually find a dry spot to put the ball. Some hope at times. So off we went and it was exactly as we thought. Soggy and wet everywhere with very little run, the ball plopped down, dug in and when it hit water stopped dead. Exciting. The fact we were playing stroke for the monthly mug did not help either as we could not just pick up the ball.
Then it started to rain and the end was glimpsed, one group even went back and claimed ‘Rain Check’, but by then the rain stopped so back they went to complete their round. The greens were naturally slow but seemed to have drained well, but the rest of the course was a bit of a quagmire. Still golfers are tough! So, in the end all battered on. However the rain stopping and a bit of sun showing through, only led to a rise in the humidity and to go with wet feet we also got soaking wet in other areas we will not mention. At the end of the round we were absolutely shattered and everyone agreed we had had a great day. Aren’t golfers brave? So it was into a hot shower and a quick bite in the restaurant before into cars and back to Pattaya. And if we thought the drive up there was no fun, the drive back was far worse; for long periods it rained so hard the windscreen wipers could not keep up and many cars had to park alongside the road. Being brave, I took the easy option and as Mashi was driving I rested my eyes for a period. Back late at BJ’s and tired it was soon into the results, and despite the trials of the day we had some good scores. The winner on the day was Daryl Evans with a fine net 65 ahead of Brian Gage in second with net 66 and Brian Parish in third with a net 67. In fourth was Mashi Kaneta with a net 69 ahead of a countback on Net 71 that saw John Davis in fifth and Steen Haberstaat in sixth. Sad to say one or two decided to stay for a cold one or two, or three. T.T.F.N. Near Pins: John Davis, Peter Bygballe, Walter Baechli, Steen Haberstaat and Mick Coghlan

Local Sports John and Mick battle it out at Crystal Bay by Dick Warberg Crystal Bay Hello to all golf fans and dedicated readers. This week the Tropical Golfers made a visit to Crystal Bay. The “Golfer of the Month” contest is in full swing, and each day, indeed each stroke is quite important to a few. Numbers are starting to climb and this day the Tropical Golfers had a winning 21 golfers meet at BJ's Lodge for food and greetings. Always one of the more favored venues, Crystal Bay is a forgiving and scoring course. One nice surprise is it was also in borderline excellent condition! Is it just the weather or has someone been tending to the grass with extra care. We don't know, but all who played said the course
may be in the best condition ever. Plus we heard that the “A” nine, closed for many months, may be open in a couple of months. The scores this day were high but not mind blowing as we sometimes have there. Several people below handicap level even got some mentions. Without further suspense here is how we finished. A-Flight (0-20): John Davis (c/h 15) showed he was not going to go down quietly in his GOM quest by shooting the best score of the day at 41 points! John is tenacious! Next, returning Alan Sullivan (17) made a nice showing with 37 points, followed by Ronnie Ratte (20) on 33 points and Brian Parish (13) taking the final flight honors on count-back with 32.
by Derek Brook
B-Flight (21+): Mick Coghlan (24) showed he has stamina with the GOM finish line in sight, and solidified his lead with a fine 39 points. After Mick, Daryl Evans (25) shot right on handicap with 36 points, followed by Steen
Knight finishes nicely! Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees A very somber city this week as we prepare for the cremation of the King at the Royal Palace in Bangkok. This will be recreated all over Thailand and at our local Wat Chaimonogkol on Pattaya Tai. For the first time in over ten years, The Golf Club will be closed on the day of the actual cremation, Thursday 26th October. For today, we once more take to the links of Rayong Green Valley at the newly branded “Barcelona Valley” golf resort. This is our home course and condition is getting better every week. Today she was a little wet in places, so another lift, clean and place day in the short grass. A strong turnout of 28 golfers tells me high season is getting near. A trio of 36’s are tied for third place on the podium, and our ol’ mate Gary Emmett did them all just one shot better for sole second on 37. It was a one-two finish for Gary and best mate Steve Coughlan and an excellent round today gives Steve 39 points for a big chicken dinner! Good to see Frank Tordeur back in town, not on the podium today…but watch this space! Results: 1st – Steve Coughlan (26) 39 points 2nd– Gary Emmett (15) 37 points T-3rd – Gabe Gawron (13) 36 points T-3rd – Wayne Bridgeman (6) 36 points T-3rd – Andy Makara (31) 36 points
Treasure Hill – Stableford – White Tees Welcome back Kenny! After an absence of some five months, Aihara-san has finally returned for some more of our Antigua Monthly Medal shirts so ya better watch out. He hasn’t played since going back to Japan and will need some warm up before returning to top form. Today, only 29 points but good enough for a podium finish! Another bloke just back, Frank Tordeur takes second on 30 points with the big boy Richard Kings a winner with just 32 points on the card. Not surprising, this Treasure Hill track is narrow and difficult and to shoot your handicap here is quite an achievement. Not on the leaderboard but quite content, Mark Wood was happy with the Heineken promotion at the course that day! Another contented camper was the well-off Daniel Velloff taking the near pin. Results: 1st – Richard Kings (28) 32 points 2nd – Frank Tordeur (15) 30 points 3rd – Kenny Aihara (6) 29 points Laem Chabang A & B – Stableford – White Tees People forget about the legacy of Laem Chabang. This has been one of the best golf courses in Asia (Golf Digest) for 25 years and certainly deserves the accolades. Even in the wet as it was today, the guys were raving about
PSC Tropical golf from BJ's
Habersaat (29) and Peter Bygballe with 33 points. Congrats. Best Nines (non winner): Tom Herrington and Don Carmody got mentioned for having the best non-winning, 9 hole scores.

The Knight in white and the visitors! this course. This was the last Sports Day on Thursday this year so from now on it is back to the high season rates, and still worth it! Visiting Steve Hogan took the win with a nifty 38 on the card. Wayne Bridgeman on 37 and John Robinson gets a break from the baby stroller shooting a 36 for a numerically perfect podium. Results: 1st – Steve Hogan (20) 38 points 2nd –Wayne Bridgeman (6) 37 points 3rd – John Robinson (12) 36 points Khao Kheow B & C – Stableford – Yellow Tees After all these months, the “B” course here has finally reopened! It is such a great track and the torment of the par-3 eighth hole is back at last. Condition here was exceptional given all the rain we have had lately. We reckon the yardage was close to 6,450 from the yellows and shooting a 39 here was a fantastic round. That is just what our Kiwi buddy Rob Knight did
and what a way to end your holiday in Thailand. Rob has been with us for the last several weeks and a favourite customer of the T.G.C. staff (and not just because of all the drinks he buys them.) Always a smile on his face, always with a joke at hand, get back soon, Robbo! Results: 1st – Rob Knight (13) 39 points 2nd – Frank Tordeur (15) 34 points 3rd – Bob McFarlane (13) 33 points The Golf Club is “The home of golf in Pattaya” and located in the heart of Pattaya on Soi L.K. Bob and Dick Royal Lakeside (Stableford) We seem to go here quite often these days and it is always a pleasure to play. Whether it is the fine clubhouse or the straight forward, relative to many courses, of the layout I am not too sure. This course is one you can play and always seem to have a good day, and it is nice to go to a course where you can relax a little and score well. Main disadvantage of playing here is the drive there and especially back, however one thing I am good at is resting my eyes so it is not too bad, however driving back after playing can be a trial. I try to avoid it these days if I can. On this day we were off on time but it was overcast and we expected some rain. The course was grassed quite long and tended to make it seem long and while most fairways could be driven on in the buggies some were such that the carts were not allowed on. Caddie knowledge knew the
ones we were not allowed on. So with the fairways not cut short and the greens slower than normal, one would expect the scores to be low, but not with these ‘Lads’, they stuck at it and in general all the players scored quite well. Oh, whilst it did rain a little it soon cleared and a good day was had by all. Back at BJ’s we were soon into the results. In the A flight the winner was Bob Britton with a fine 42 points ahead of a countback on 39 points that saw Steve Truelove in second and Mashi Kaneta in third. In the B flight the winner was Dick Warberg with also a fine 42 points ahead of a countback on 38 points that saw Barry Elphick in second and Mick Coghlan in third. Then in the Non Winners section, the front nine was won by Andy Sullivan with 22 points and the back nine was won by Brian Parish with 17 points. T.T.F.N.

You & Your Pets Brushing up on hairballs again In the previous edition of Pattaya Today, we discussed hairballs and offered some thoughts on limiting such problems. In response to that column, former Pattaya Today contributor Dr. RJ Peters provided additional insight—if not contradictory advice. Herewith, Dr. Peters’ welcomed commentary: Like you, I used to think hairballs were "normal." But over the years I've switched many of my cats to meat, especially raw meat; since then I see far fewer of those icky things. In fact, I recently read a column by cat authority Fern Slack, DVM, in which she notes that she once had a long-haired cat who threw up hairballs frequently. Unlike most hairball-barfing cats, she did not just hack up the offending wad and then go about her business as though nothing had happened. Instead, she would obviously feel ill for minutes to hours afterward. And probably beforehand, too. Dr Slack said she tried timehonored remedies such as dosing the cat with flavored petroleum jelly, putting her on high fiber diets, brushing her constantly, etc. Shaving her several times a year eliminated hairballs, but she continued to throw up, though less frequently. It was later learned that the cat had developed inflammatory bowel disease Another feline practitioner postulates that there is no such thing as “just a hairball,” arguing:
Cats developed stringent grooming behaviors in the course of evolution because grooming is a positive survival factor, probably through controlling parasitism and other diseases. So they are going to ingest a lot of hair. Does vomiting as a daily method for expelling this hair seem evolutionarily sound? Stomach acid hurts the esophagus and teeth, and frequent vomiting upsets the electrolyte balance. While vomiting as an emergency mechanism to rid oneself of the occasional nastiness seems reasonable, it seems unlikely that the daily vomiting of hairballs is the “normal” thing that the medical community has assumed it to be. In no way could a cat have naturally evolved to require the dosing with “lubricants” to survive or to thrive. Likewise, cats in the wild would never eat a “high-fiber” diet, and so would seem unlikely to benefit from one. On the contrary, it would appear logical that a cat would thrive better on what a cat has been evolved to eat – namely a mouse or a reasonable facsimile thereof – and that feeding a cat something wildly different from the diet it has evolved on is more likely to result in harm than in good. Ergo, a hairball is probably a common early symptom of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Impaired motility of the gut would account for the balling up of hair that should pass right through, if stomachemptying time is the 0.2 – 2 hours it is
reported to be in a normal cat. A cat shouldn’t be able to swallow enough hair fast enough to outrace normal stomach emptying time. So the vet has been changing her patients over to low-fiber diets (grainfree and low carbohydrate), and she’s seeing a precipitous drop in hairballs. If cat food containing an unnaturally high level of fiber and carbohydrates is associated with an increased incidence of impaired GI motility and vomiting, and if cats fed this way are at higher risk to develop IBD and lymphoma, then a drop in hairball vomiting might mean that a cat has a lower risk of these two nasty diseases. A grain-free diet might be a better way to go. While there had been no science to it back up that theory when initially proposed, there is now more and more scientific evidence that these “mere” hairballs we see so often may respond, not to grease and not to fiber, not to brushing and not to shaving, but to feeding a diet that looks like what a cat was evolved to eat: grain-free, low-carb canned foods. It is not a panacea. But can anyone believe that a feline diet in which the calories are derived primarily from carbohydrates, which are much cheaper than proteins, is beneficial to anything other than the manufacturer’s bottom line? So if your cat suffers from hairballs, you might try changing her diet, or visiting your vet.
Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being. Diabetes in dogs and cats can occur at any age. However, diabetic dogs are usually 4-14 years of age and most are diagnosed at roughly 7-10 years of age. Most diabetic cats are older than 6. Diabetes occurs in female dogs twice as often as male dogs. Obesity is a significant risk factor for development of diabetes. As dogs and cats age, they may also develop other diseases that can result in diabetes or could significantly affect their response to treatment for diabetes, The disease is more manageable if it is detected early and managed with the help of your veterinarian. With
proper monitoring, treatment, and diet and exercise, diabetic pets can lead long and happy lives. Noticing the early signs of diabetes is the most important step in taking care of your pet. If you see any of the following signs, your pet should be examined by a veterinarian: • Excessive water drinking and increased urination • Weight loss despite increased appetite • Decreased appetite • Cloudy eyes (especially in dogs) • Chronic or recurring infections (including skin and urinary infections)

Celia and Wilson
This lovely mum and son combination were rescued from our local temple. Celia had 3 kittens 2 of which have already been re-homed, leaving just this little black and white rascal Wilson. This "Purrfect pair" would love to go to a new home together if possible.
Mr.Tibbs
This friendly handsome boy has been with us for a few years now, he just loves playing in the garden and is a good cat for catching vermin. He would love to go to a new home where he could be the centre of attention, but could also be a good friend for your lonely puss.
Temple kitten 1
This lovely kitten was born here just 6 weeks ago: we found her mum at our local temple. She was heavily pregnant. Just a few days later she gave birth to 5 beautiful babies. This one is called Moley and has many lovely colours.
Temple kitten 2
This next lovely kitten is an unusual ginger girl as most ginger cats are boys. Just like her sister above, she is lively, friendly and very naughty as most kittens are. It would be nice to re-home her with one of her brothers and sisters.

Going to the Dogs...
“In order to keep a true perspective of one’s importance, everyone should have a dog that will worship him and a cat that will ignore him.” ~ Derek Bruce
Dogs have about 100 different facial expressions, most of them made with the ears Polar bear skin is black! The only mammal capable of flight is the bat.
If you suffer from severe allergic reactions, consider testing yourself for feline allergies before bringing a cat or a kitten home. Then again, some people with allergies might adapt to their own pet, but still be allergic to other cats. A safe bet is to choose a cat with low allergens. Consult your vet or books for suggestions.
