Pattaya bullet train in 2023
Following several public hearings, the government has announced that the Japanesefunded hi-speed train, linking Thailand’s three principal airports, will be operational in 2023. The 200-billion investment project will link
Don Muang, Suvarnabhumi and U-tapao, with intervening stops including Pattaya. The train route of 193km will run from Bangkok through Samut Prakan, Chachoengsao and Chonburi and terminate at Rayong. The project is
part of a plan to establish transport links across the Eastern Economic Corridor which is attracting huge foreign investment. Bullet trains in Thailand were first mooted in 2010 but have been greatly favoured by the current,
military-installed government. The inclusion of Pattaya railway station in the 215 billion baht project – anticipated by the fact that it is prominently displayed on the Continued on page 4

News Thai farmers urge government to protect their livelihoods Thai farmers and agricultural industry leaders are urging the government to not restrict the use of glyphosate, a vital crop protection tool that improves the sustainability and productivity of farming. For more than 40 years, glyphosate has helped local farmers improve Thailand’s food security, economic development and sustainability of its food production. When it comes to safety assessments, no other pesticide has been more extensively tested than glyphosate. After four decades of evaluations, no regulatory agency in the world considers glyphosate to be carcinogenic. The Joint World Health Organization (WHO)/Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) Meeting on Pesticide Residues concluded that “glyphosate is unlikely to pose a carcinogenic risk to humans from exposure through diet”. In fact, in the past two years alone regulatory authorities in the Europe Union, South Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States have publicly reaffirmed that glyphosate does not cause cancer. The European Commission’s glyphosate webpage outlines the status of the chemical in Europe and the comprehensive safety assessments undertaken by EU Member States and EU agencies. Farmers and agricultural
industry leaders are questioning why the Department of Agriculture and Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives are proposing to restrict their use of such a safe and valuable crop protection tool. Sukan Sungwanna, a food standard agency secretariat questioned, “If the safe and low toxicity herbicide as glyphosate is restricted or banned, who would be responsible to ensure that farmers are not at risk of counterfeit or low quality glyphosate illegally sold in non-certified shop?”. Sukan added “The proposed restriction is impossible as famers need to use glyphosate, depending on hand or machine weeding is also economically unrealistic. Furthermore, restriction of use in areas connected to or nearby water sources is out of the question as all farms have or connected to water sources.” Anek Limsriwilai, palm oil farmer in Krabi, one of the largest farm owners in the country said: “Since I have been using glyphosate for so many years I have to say that it is a very useful method to manage the farm. If glyphosate is restricted, we have to use other methods and hire more labor to manage weeds. These will definitely impact on our income and the level of competitiveness. But I do agree with the idea of social responsibility. You have to make sure

The TAT initiated the biannual awards project in 1996, as it believes that the Awards signify quality and excellence in tourism and hospitality operations and it seeks to promote responsible management among tourism entrepreneurs, ultimately leading to sustainable tourism.
that the regulations will be based on the scientific fact since I believe that the responsible use of crop protection tools is achieved through education and collaboration, not through restrictions and bans.” Thailand’s agricultural sector employs a significant portion of the populace, with approximately 60 per cent of the population cultivating rice on half the country’s arable land area. Given glyphosate’s numerous benefits, including significant cost and labour reduction, Thai farmers are united in urging the government not to proceed with the proposed restrictions. Rath Kumluekiat, shallot and mango farmer in Lumpoon said, “I am a farmer for my whole life, since the beginning, the use of glyphosate is important for us. We have to do the land preparation before planting shallot each year and that time is just once in a year that we use glyphosate. I think it is good to think about food quality and safety. But a restriction on glyphosate would effectively turn back the clock on innovation. It will directly affect our farmers and the community’s access to safe and affordable food—not to mention undermining Thailand’s long-standing history as a major global food producer.”. A recent independent report released by PG Economics entitled
‘The contribution of glyphosate to agriculture in Thailand and implications or restrictions on its use’ revealed the economic and environmental impacts of restricting glyphosate use. The analysis revealed that glyphosate is an important tool to Thailand farmers representing 33 per cent of all herbicides used in the country. Glyphosate is widely used in plantation crops like oil palm, rubber, and tropical fruit for land preparation and in crop weed control. Glyphosate was the most important herbicide in oil palm (79 per cent of all herbicide use) and in rubber (81 per cent). It is also an important herbicide in rice, corn, sugarcane, and cassava. Thai farmers would probably face significant yield losses and a hit to their incomes if glyphosate was removed from their toolkit. A five per cent yield loss would result in a drop of 1 million tonnes in food production and a corresponding loss of $231 million in farmers’ annual revenue, with rubber, tropical fruits, and oil palm suffering the heaviest impact. The environmental benefits arising from reduced or conservation tillage, such as less soil erosion, high water retention, and reduced CO2 emissions, that Thai farmers enjoyed so far would be lost. A large portion of farmers currently practicing reduced tillage indicated that they would revert to ploughing if denied access
to glyphosate. Wattana Keawpuang, shallot and rice farmer in Sridaket, is concerned about labor costs of eliminating the weeds on the farm. “Without access to glyphosate, farmers would need access to labour for additional manual and mechanical weed control practices. This additional labour requirement is substantial and would be difficult to secure.” One of the major arguments calls attention to the fact that agricultural produce—rice, corn, sugarcane, and cassava, among others—are among the country’s top export items and taking away a key tool of production would not only force farmers to resort to heavily labour-intensive alternatives, but would reduce the agricultural sector’s overall global competitiveness. Under the “Thailand 4.0 strategy”, Thailand’s government aims for a seven-fold increase in average annual income of farmers within the next 20 years. Achieving this will be impossible without policies that encourage farmers to adopt modern agricultural technology, including proven crop protection tools such as glyphosate. The government’s commitment to improving farmer incomes is commendable and can be accomplished through close collaboration with the agricultural sector.

Pattaya BULLET TRAIN IN 2013 overhead signs for the recently-opened Sukhumvit road tunnel – has come as a relief to business owners in the resort. Currently, there is no regular public transport link between Pattaya and Rayong’s U-tapao airport with private taxis and occasional minibuses having a near monopoly. The State Railway of Thailand estimates that over 100,000 people daily will use the City Line route, which will connect Don Muang and Suvarnabhumi airports, and a further 65,000 travelling between Bangkok and Rayong. The hi-speed trains will run at 250km per hour on 1.4-metre standard gauge tracks. Ticket prices will start at 20 baht with an additional 1.8 baht per km. The cost for an entire-route single ticket would be less than 400 baht. At the public hearings, the issue was raised whether poorer Thais would be able to afford the fares. But there will be a non-bullet train service available at a cheaper rate which stops at more stations between the metropolis and Rayong. Another concern was that walls of sound with absorbing materials be built to reduce any noise pollution and to deal with copious dust. There will be a total of eight elevated stations: Don Muang, Bang Sue, Makkasan, Chachoengsao, Chonburi, Sri Racha, Pattaya and Rayong. The other two stations will be underground – Suvarnabhumi and U-tapao. The non-bullet train service may make additional stops. The new services will be available for both passengers and small freight. There are no plans to move the existing Pattaya railway station from its hub near Siam Country Club Road. It has earlier been suggested that the city authorities introduce an overhead electric rail passenger car service to link the station with downtown areas and Beach Road. However, the expense involved has shelved this notion for the time being. Pattaya currently receives around 12 million tourists a year, the majority being Chinese and a growing number arriving and departing on charter flights at U-tapao airport which is currently undergoing redevelopment. This number is expected to triple once the bullet train is operational.
Bangkok mega-projects take centre stage at Thailand Tourism Forum 2018 The Thailand Tourism Forum (TTF) will return for its seventh annual edition on January 22, 2018, gathering approximately 650 hotel industry professionals at the InterContinental Hotel Bangkok to discuss the mega-projects that are reshaping Bangkok’s cityscape. Running under the theme ‘Megacity Bangkok– A Tourism and Hotel Futurescape’, TTF 2018 will focus on the redevelopment of the thriving Thai capital. A series of high-level speakers will address the one-day event, including Srettha Thavisin, president of Sansiri PLC, one of Thailand’s leading hotel and real estate developers. Sansiri recently entered the hospitality space in partnership with Standard Hotels to create the upstart hotel brand, Monocle, and Thavisin will be interviewed on stage at the forum, discussing how “Large Scale Projects Contribute to Better Tourism Experiences.” He will be joined at the event by executives from some of the Thailand’s largest conglomerates, hotel leaders, expert analysts, developers, financiers and more. The opening address will be made by Bill Barnett, TTF event co-organiser managing director of C9 Hotelworks. “Thailand’s tourism industry continues to ride the crest of a wave, with record-breaking numbers of global visitors clamouring to experience the country’s many attractions,” Barnett said. “As the country’s capital and major international gateway, Bangkok is fast becoming one of the world’s great mega-cities.
“ To sustain such numbers however, Bangkok needs largescale redevelopment. Massive infrastructure projects are pushing into more districts and creating new tourism hotspots such as the Chao Praya River area. At TTF 2018, we will learn first-hand about the ambitious plans for Bangkok’s emerging cityscape and examine their impact on the tourism and hospitality sectors,” Barnett added. Thailand’s tourism industry is on track for yet another record-breaking year. According to data from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Kingdom welcomed 17.3 million international visitors in the first half of 2017, generating 876 billion baht (US$25 billion). Tourism revenues are expected to reach an all-time high of 1.81 trillion baht (US$50 billion) for the full year. This rising demand is also boosting confidence in Thailand’s hotel sector; according to STR, approximately 100 new hotels are currently in the country’s pipeline, potentially adding 21,600 new rooms to the national inventory – many of which will be in Bangkok. But challenges remain; Thailand’s transport infrastructure struggles to cope with the tourism influx, hoteliers face strong competition, and average daily rate (ADR) remains under pressure. So what does the future hold for Bangkok? A series of multi-billion-baht developments, including transport links, mega-malls, attractions, hotels and residential projects, are transforming the cityscape, creating both opportunities

News A total of 17 restaurants recognized by Michelin star Michelin unveiled the first selection for the Michelin Guide Bangkok, which features a total of 98 restaurants. This selection highlights how the city embraces international dining without abandoning its own heritage and authentic cuisine – which draws millions of visitors worldwide. Michael Ellis, international director in charge of the Michelin Guides comments: “We are proud to launch this first selection of the Michelin guide dedicated to Bangkok, highlighting the richness of the city’s gastronomy. Our inspectors were thrilled to find a local culinary scene with an amazing vibrancy, myriad new restaurants, an astonishing variety of wonderful street food, but also Thai cuisine served in different forms.” Three restaurants obtain two stars
in the Michelin Guide Bangkok 2018: Gaggan, where the chef-owner Gaggan Anand takes Indian cuisine to a level rarely seen, and one that has a truly unique signature. His artful dishes are original and creative, with a wonderful blend of textures, flavours, and delicate spices. Le Normandie, located in The Mandarin Oriental Hotel, also gains two stars. Opened in 1958, the restaurant offers a sophisticated French cuisine based on superb ingredients, refined techniques, and well executed combinations of flavours and textures. Also awarded two stars, Mezzaluna is perched on the 65th floor of the Lebua Hotel, and the chef and his team deliver European delights with Japanese precision in five- and sevencourse set menus. The first selection of the Michelin
Guide Bangkok also award 14 restaurants one star, highlighting the quality of local cuisine, as seven of these one-star restaurants offer Thai cuisine prepared by local Thai chefs, like Chim by Siam Wisdom, where the chef revisits traditional Thai recipes to create dishes that strike a balance between the old and the new, and between Thai and foreign influences; Bo.lan; Saneh Jaan, a restaurant offering Thai dishes which are a mix of classics and hardto-find recipes like kaengranjuan, a hot and spicy soup. Innovative modern Thai cuisine is also well represented in Bangkok with Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin, where the chef respects traditional Thai flavours and ingredients but transforms them to produce something truly creative and original. Of particular interest, one street food vendor also obtains one star: Jay Fai, where the owner-chef insists on staying at the tiny open kitchen with her homemade charcoal stoves, continuing what her father started 70 years ago, making crab omelettes, crab curries and dry congee. International cuisine is also recognized in the Michelin Guide Bangkok 2018 with establishments awarded one star such as Ginza Sushi ichi, a sushi restaurant where ingredients are delivered straight from markets in Tokyo every 24 hours, or Sühring, where brothers Mathias and Thomas Sühring deliver their very
own style of modern German cooking that is sometimes playful, sometimes classic and always prepared with care. L’Atelier de JoëlRobuchon, J’AIME by Jean-Michel Lorrain, Elements and Savelberg, both gain a star in this first selection, with these restaurants serving French contemporary cuisine. This year’s selection also features a total of 35 restaurants awarded a Bib Gourmand, a distinction as popular with chefs as it is with gourmets, which recognize favorite establishments selected by the Michelin inspectors for their good value for money, as they serve a quality menu for a maximum of 1,000 baht. On the ground the inspectors unearthed all kinds of delights: from street food like Baan Yai Phad Thai, one of the best place for Phad Thai,
or Guay Tiew Kua Gai Suanmali, a long-standing stir-fried chicken noodle shop, to more traditional restaurants offering local and delicious Thai cuisine. For example, Jay Oh serves local style seafood and dishes in a very local rustic, casual ambience where long queues are seen every night, and also obtaining a Bib Gourmand, Baannai, located in a beautiful Thai style wooden house with a well decorated garden serving traditional and delicate Thai food, or Soul Food Mahanakorn which serves modern Thai food. Reflecting the impressive diversity of street food in Bangkok, which is one of the most attractive spots for visitors from around the world, the Michelin guide selects a total of 28 street food stalls.

Graduating Ceremony by Derek Franklin
When the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities opened in 1984, those admitted into the school we all living with a physical disability. Students were expected to be able to get themselves ready each morning, mobilize around the school and all were able to live independently. However, over recent years the school has accepted many young adults who are living with not only a physical disability, but also a mental disability. Today at the school there are students with cerebral palsy and others with severe cases of
polio. There are teenagers with limbs missing, or if they have limbs they are often deformed leaving them with difficulty in using them. Others are born with such deformed bodies that they are in need of constant assistance to help them do the things we take for granted, such as showering and getting dressed. But no matter the disability, or ability, that a young person is living with, most still want to be educated. They want to find a job, earn their own money and live as independently as possible. The vocational school recently held its annual
graduation ceremony and sixty nine students gathered to receive their leaving certificates. It was a mix of students, male and female, physically and mentally disabled, but all with one thing in common, their achievements. Before coming to the school many were told they would never achieve much in life. They were told they couldn’t do anything even before they had tried to go to school, play a sport and even have a social life. But now they have achieved something, they have gained knowledge and they all
have a job to go to. Since 1984, more than 3,000 young adults living with a disability have graduated
from the school and more information can be found at www.fr-ray.org or email info@ fr-ray.org

MANTRA Introduces a New Nightly Degustation Menu
Chef Shaun Venter
Mantra Bar & Restaurant has set the benchmark for global cuisine since its opening over ten years ago. It consistently ranks in the top restaurants of the city and deserves its enviable reputation for serving unswerving quality in an ambiance of contemporary elegance. Chic, stylish and unique it works hard to maintain its position in Pattaya’s gastro circles. Exclusive culinary (and musical) events take place regularly especially wine dinners where the skills of their Executive Chef, Shaun Venter and his brigade make for a memorable evening. Mick and I were to be served their new Wine Dinner Menu featuring a septet of carefully selected wines paired with a gourmet 7-course dinner for B.2,999 net. The first pouring of the evening featured an Italian Conte Fosco Cuvee Brut. Bubbles are always an exciting aperitif and this flute fitted the bill perfectly, accompanied by top drawer Atlantic salmon liberally sprinkled with Togarashi, a spicy Japanese chilli. Crowned with wonderful Keta Russian red caviar on a bed of seaweed and dressed with a classic Japanese Ponzo it proved
an innovative and delicious opening and a portent of what was to come. Seared sea scallops followed served in a puddle of cauliflower puree and sprinkled with a truly toothsome Parma ham dust. Also on the platter was an espresso coffee cup of Miso onion broth which added another gastro-dimension with its underlying umami kick. The wine paring was Pinical Estates Reserve Chardonnay from Australia. This fresh young wine with its creamy volume and fruity balance escorted this course admirably. The next pour was a Surya Nero d’Avola Merlot IGT from Sicily. An intense ruby red wine with hues of garnet and slightly woody notes, it more than deserved its place with the classic extravagance of pan seared foie gras. The liver had been treated to a burnished glaze and was attended by a selection of vanilla stewed fruit. We were oohing and aahing all the way. I loved every morsel, it was a perfect plate of food and the fig, prune and apricot were especially luscious. I’d buy a barrel of them if I could. Then followed a Jerusalen artichoke veloute with black truffle
and Parmesan croquettes. These ingredients created a perfect threesome. The delicate nutty flavour of the hand peeled Jerusalem artichokes balanced the earthiness and richness of the truffle and the Parmesan croquettes were salty gems floating in the liquid – a quite delicious soup. Just a little more and alas the bottom of my plate appeared, I could have licked it clean! It was served with an Italian Zonin Pinot Grigio 2016, pale yellow with scents of almond and peaches - superb. The main course of grilled Australian Beef Tenderloin was perfected with a red wine jus, ceps risotto and asparagus spears. A glass of Argentinean Argento Malbec balanced the flavours and brought together the luxury overload. A splendid cheese trolley selection then arrived on the table. The accompanying wine was a fine Australian Tempus Two Shiraz Hunter Valley 2015 with its luscious aromas of liquorice and dark chocolate accentuated by a nutty oak barrel maturation it was a sensational coupling. Dessert concluded the feasting
and what a dessert it proved to be – a green tea-ramisu. An East/West fusion had devised a variation on the classic tiramisu cake but using green tea instead of espresso and cocoa powder. The chosen wine was a Chilean Echeverria Sauvignon Blanc Late Harvest 2015. This complex dessert wine, golden in colour was an intense and harmonious partner to the lusciousness of the green tea-ramisu.
Tea, coffee and sweet endings were also available. The menu changes regularly so do check their website for the upcoming degustations which are available nightly. Open daily from 6.00 pm till l.00 am. (The bar opens at 5.00 pm). Tel: (038) 429 591 or visit www.mantra-pattaya. com.

Vol. 05 No. 24 | Dec 16-31, 2017 Chef Han Chul (hans) Bae
thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com
KOREAN FOOD FESTIVAL
Korean food is having a moment. From Bibimbap (mixed rice with red chilli paste) to Bulgogi (sliced grilled meats), the buzz is out and kimchi is even replacing miso as the latest umami food trend. If you love Chinese and Japanese food, then you’ll be a fan of Korean. Chefs describe the cuisine as punchy, lively, honest cooking. The tastes are strong and spicy and now is definitely the time to get acquainted with this thriving cuisine. Mick and I were invited to the Dusit Thani Pattaya the other week to preview the dishes on offer at their Korean Food Festival. The distinguished Chairman of the Korean Chefs Club, Han Chul (hans) Bae presided over the preparation, guiding his brigade and producing some spectacular dishes. Master Chef and his top team had flown in from Seoul to celebrate at the festival and present the most authentic, delicious food. Kimchi is by far the most popular dish in Korea. This fermented blend of vegetables is packed with seasonings resulting in a mix of spicy and sour essences. It is typically served as a side dish with rice but with its pleasing versatility the options are endless. The Festival was set at the hotel’s Cascade Restaurant and on arrival we were greeted by a trio of attractive greeters beautifully turned out in Korean national costume. (The gentlemen’s “Gat”, a black cylindrical wide brimmed hat was sensational.) Executive Assistant Manager, Larry Choi, proficiently directed the proceedings and joined us for a lunch sampling of all the piquant exciting delicacies. The first dish to be served was a peerless poached chicken roulade (stuffed with sticky rice) swimming in a chicken and ginseng broth sprinkled with chopped spring onion. Delicately presented the broth was topped with a ginseng root for complete authenticity. We loved it. It was light, healthy and tasted so nutritious and Chef told us it is known as a stamina reviver in Korea. It was then time to take a plate and tour down the many laid-out buffet dishes. First up, and in pride of position was, naturally Kimchi. Two types were available made
from cabbage and red hot in colour. It was a popular spot at the table. Steak tartare Korean style, served in china spoons was another hot spot for foodies while the Bibimbab was proving very popular. A big cauldron of warm white rice is spooned into your bowl and then topped with an array of individually prepared vegetables and then a big dollop of chilli pepper sauce is dropped on top before being mixed well with the rice. The Bulgogi of beef short ribs glistened and tempted to be chosen for another taste of one of the country’s most popular dishes. Moving down the table, another chaffing dish invited inspection with a mountain of glass noodles liberally jumbled with seasonal vegetables with a big warming dish of grilled pork just shrieking to be a scrumptious accompaniment to the noodles. We loved the pork, red with chilli sauce yet soft and tender it was just a perfect dish.
The dessert table was laden with honey centred pastries and also a very special rice cake from Jeju-do island. Balls of glutinous millet dough had been rolled in a bean powder of mashed red beans making for a delightful chewy and sweet mouthful. Served to complement these flavours was a glass of Omija, known as the five-flavour berry. Tangy, slightly sweet but definitely tart it perfectly closed our lunch time feasting on the best of Korean cuisine. The Korean Food Festival ran from 26th November until 2nd December 2017. However the Cascade Restaurant will be featuring a Korean corner in their buffet. Dusit Thani Pattaya Hotel is located by Dolphin Roundabout, North Pattaya. Take This Jump-Rope Challenge by Rory Coughlan
The best cardio workout is the jumprope double-turn maneuver. It's intense: You'll burn calories! Do basic jumps for five minutes, then jump twice as high and turn the rope twice as fast so it passes under your feet twice before you land. This takes timing, patience and power. But you'll get in great shape just by working at it. Give Yourself a Break You don't have to be a fitness saint to get results. Follow the 80/20 plan: Eighty percent of the year, you'll exercise regularly and eat well. Know that you'll slip 20 percent of the time due to holidays and work deadlines. When you accept that fitness isn't an all-or-nothing proposition, you're more likely to stick with it for life. Get a Jump on Weight Loss Add plyometric box jumps to your workout to improve your cardiovascular stamina and leg strength — you'll really sculpt your hamstrings, quads and glutes. Find a sturdy box that is at least one foot high. Starting from a standing position explosively jump to the middle of the
box, and then jump back down. Repeat 20 times. Don't Skimp on Carbs Your body needs them to fuel a workout, so reach for fruit or high-fiber crackers an hour beforehand. If you are exercising for 90 minutes or longer, include some protein so that the carbs break down more slowly, giving you longer-lasting energy. For the best nutritional value Select vegetables with more potassium often, such as sweet potatoes, white potatoes, white beans, tomato products (paste, sauce, and juice), beet greens, soybeans, lima beans, spinach, lentils, and kidney beans. Sauces or seasonings can add calories, saturated fat, and sodium to vegetables. Use the Nutrition Facts label to compare the calories and % Daily Value for saturated fat and sodium in plain and seasoned vegetables. Prepare more foods from fresh ingredients to lower sodium intake. Most sodium in the food supply comes from
packaged or processed foods. Buy canned vegetables labeled “reduced sodium,” “low sodium,” or “no salt added.” If you want to add a little salt it will likely be less than the amount in the regular canned product.

Chewing gum makes you more alert
To cool down, drink something hot It might sound counterproductive, but if you want to cool down, then drink something hot. According to a study from the University of Ottawa’s school of Human Kinetics, as the drink is hotter than your body temperature, it triggers a sweat response in the body that more than compensates for the increase. So although it might initially make you feel hotter, a hot drink will cause you to sweat more and therefore the body effectively cools itself quicker.
If your suffering from a mid-afternoon slump or can’t seem to concentrate in the morning, then try chewing some gum to make you feel awake. Coventry University researchers found that chewing mint flavoured gum dramatically reduced feelings of tiredness. Another study on the subject found that chewing gum can improve overall test scores and memory by 35 per cent, relieve stress and reduce anxiety levels.

Bosch has invested more than 3.2 billion baht in total in the new location, which lies around 130 kilometers east of Bangkok and provides a total floor space for industrial use of some 10,000 square meters.
The new manufacturing plant was inaugurated by Jan Scheer, deputy of mission and head of Economic Affairs, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bangkok, Stefan Seiberth, president of Gasoline Systems, Robert Bosch GmbH, and Martin Hayes, president at Robert Bosch SEA, together with other Bosch executives. Scheer commented, “By expanding Bosch’s activities, the company becomes even more a part of the “Made in Germany” success story. “Made in Germany” is still one of the high unique characteristics customers can rely on with regard to engineering, innovation and design - in Thailand as well as in the rest
of the world. mu Space becomes first Thai startup to acquire satellite license
mu Space becomes Thailand’s first space technology startup to operate a satellite service after the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission awarded a license for the company. The 15-year license covers the operation of a satellite and provision of satellite-based services until 2032. Speaking on behalf of mu Space, Chief Technical Officer Samathorn Teankingkaeo said his team plans to differentiate mu Space from the others by providing satellite services that are affordable and easy to install. His team also promises fast customer support and wide coverage, including in rural communities. “Rural communities are mostly thinly populated and far from big cities. That’s why only a few
companies go there to build telecom infrastructures. To overcome these challenges and provide rural communities with broadband, using a satellite is the best alternative,” said Samathorn. According to Thailand’s telecom industry database, nearly 12 percent or 8 million of the country’s 68 million population have access to broadband. While there is progress in recent years, there is a long way to go to fully make broadband accessible to all, including in rural communities. “We want to help improve the quality of life. Through satellite, we can provide invaluable solutions to support the government’s Thailand 4.0 economic policy, and bridge the digital gap between urban and rural
areas,” added Samathorn. In September, mu Space had signed an agreement to support the Thai government’s vision of building a Digital Park and a learning academy for Internet of Things. The facilities will be built on a 960,000 sqm land in Chonburi, located within the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) zone. The EEC zone will accommodate investments in 10 target industries: next-generation cars, smart electronics, medical and wellness tourism, agriculture and biotechnology, food innovation, robotics, logistics and aviation, biofuels and biochemicals, digital economy, and medical services. The economic zone is projected to generate new investment of up to USD 46 billion (1.5 trillion baht) within five years from both the government and private sectors. With the space industry worldwide predicted to be worth USD 2.7 trillion (88.2 trillion baht) in the next 30 years, mu Space is joining the space race with the launch of its own satellite in 2021. The company also plans to offer space tourism to customers in Asia within the next decade. In September, mu Space became Blue Origin’s first Asian customer when it signed a deal topartner on a future satellite launch aboard their New Glenn orbital rocket.
global customers. Bosch is a leading player in the provision of Industry 4.0 solutions and innovations having applied this technology to connected manufacturing, and paving the way for further innovations that will drive transformation globally. The manufacturing facility in Rayong is no exception, being highly automated with connected manufacturing technologies, and incorporating proprietary Industry 4.0 solutions from Bosch. “The opening of our new plant enablesus to serve the growing base of local and global OEM vehicle manufacturers andtechnologically positions us at the forefront of the industry,” said Seiberth. “This is
our first research and development facility in the country, thus underlining Thailand’s role and strategic importance for the Bosch Group in alignment with the country’s strategic direction moving towards the value-based economy”. Hayes reinforced this message concluding that, “Our investment in the country is also in support of Thailand’s strong focus on promoting advanced technologies and expertise to boost the country’s competitive edge in the long run. Business News Best Western® Hotels and Resorts Centara’s first COSI outlines vision for the future Hotel opens in Samui Best Western Hotels and Resorts is celebrating the successful conclusion of its 11th Asian Members’ Meeting, which gathered delegates from all across Asia to Bangkok for two days of immersive meetings, discussions and networking opportunities. Running under the theme “BW® and Beyond”, this year’s event provided a vision for Best Western’s future as it embarks on an exciting new era. The company has launched eight new global brands since 2015, including a series of cutting-edge concepts catering for the millennial market. So, this year’s Asian Members’ Meeting focused on the company’s bright future in Asia and the exciting opportunities provided by this dynamic market. The event took place over the course of several days in late November 2017, as Best Western’s executives, hotel managers and owners gathered at the upscale Montien Riverside Hotel, Bangkok, which will soon become a Best Western Premier® hotel. Delegates were treated to an in-depth program that included executive speeches, corporate updates and networking opportunities. The event was addressed by Ron Pohl, Best Western’s senior vice president and chief operations officer, and Olivier Berrivin, managing director of International Operations – Asia, who provided updates about the company’s ongoing regional expansion. Special guest speakers from Google and Agoda.com were present to update delegates on the rapid technological developments currently taking place in the hotel industry. Best Western’s hotel owners and procurement company also addressed the meeting. The meeting concluded with a glittering farewell dinner in the Montien Riverside Hotel’s ballroom,
and anaward ceremony to honor Best Western’s best performing hotels in Asia. “This is an extremely exciting time for Best Western Hotels & Resorts and we are delighted to have been able to share our vision with delegates and partners at our 11thAsian Members' Meeting,” said Berrivin. “With a portfolio that now comprises 11 hotel brands, including many innovative new concepts that are perfectly suited to the emerging millennial market, Best Western is currently undergoing a period of historic growth. Our Asian Members’ Meeting allowed our executives, owners and managers to come together, share ideas and drive our business forward. We were also delighted to honor our top performing hotels at the Best
Western Award Ceremony.” “Delegate feedback has been extremely positive, and we look forward to raising the bar for hotel accommodation in Asia following this highly successful event,”Berrivin added. “We are excited about Best Western’s growing presence and continued reign as one of Asia’s leading hotel brands,” said Pohl. “The year 2017 has been incredible, as we nowhave108 hotels and resorts in destinations all across Asia, providing more than 15,000 rooms and suites. We also have 53 hotels with nearly 10,700 rooms in the regional pipeline. We look forward to another successful year ahead, delivering exceptional experiences to our guests and expanding our portfolio to many more great destinations across Asia.
The new COSI Hotel on Samui island is now officially open and welcoming independent, techsavvy travelers. It is as different from atraditional hotel as a new smartphone is from the mobile phones of the 90s. Centara completely re-thought what a hotel should be for the new generation of connected, freedom loving, priceyfrill-hating travellers. The result is an innovative and affordable lifestyle hub set in the middle of the shopping, eating, social and entertainment scene on Chaweng Beach. If it feels a little more like staying at the stylish home of a friend, that’s the whole idea. “COSI represents a lot of new thinking about what a modern hotel can be, based on what’s importantand what’s not so relevant for today’s, youthful-minded, smart travellers,” explained Harry Thaliwal, Centara’s general manager and corporate director of operations for COSI. “You can create a very fresh and unique place if you’re willing to throw out the usual conventions.” For starters, there’s no lobby counter or check-in queues. You can check yourself in and out at the digital self-service stations. COSI is designed to play well with the smartphones in the pockets of today’s travellers. You can book with your smartphone, check in with your smartphone, and playvideos or catch-up with your latest box set on your room’s 43-inch Smart TV screen, which can mirror your
phone screen. Fast and freeWi-Fi is everywhere. The hotel’s hub is a 24/7 social and media play space where guests can watch the game, grab a sip or a bite, and connect with friends. You get free daily credits to use for food and drink any time you want at the integrated WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Café. COSI’s 150 rooms are clean and streamlined. In addition to thehi-tech TV, they feature mega comfy king or twin beds, powerful showers, digitalsafes and fridges. Each room even has five USB ports so guests can recharge their devices withoutworryingabout converters. COSI Samui also features an 18-metre rooftop pool and all-hours laundromat. The minimalist mod look and feel of the hotel go well with the technology and service innovations. The “COSI Crew” were trained to help guests new to Samui discover its best places. Central Festival, the island’s main shopping centre, is up the street, and Samui’s airport is only 15 minutes away. “Today’s young travellers want freedom, connections and shared experiences,” said Thirayuth Chirativat, Centara’s chief executive officer. “They are interested in a simple, smart, fun lifestyle, rather than traditional or superfluous amenities. We designed COSI for them. We expect this will be the first of many.”

Apology to Sawanna and Ms Probyn I, Kevin Mar Burt, would like to apologise sincerely to Mrs Suwanna Thim Aum and Mrs Arunothai Probyn for publishing the video on Youtube 31/01/2016 and post on Facebook 02/02/2016 and say that bad word about this video on facebook and youtube. The embarrassing and humiliating episode when she was slam dunked into the concrete pavement. I should have realised how demeaning this is to all women and may have caused physical damage for Mrs Sawanna Thim Aum and Mrs Arunothai Probyn. I regret not being man enough to stop this cowardly action, but this video was released and both of them were damaged and embarrassed by the others who saw this video that I published in the online world. I probably will not get detailed information that has given me the confidence to both get properly. I also apologise for the emotional grief I have caused by spreading this video.

Youth Focus An inspiring future for M.I.S by Gregg Sangster
It is a time of rapid change at Mooltripakdee International School, with expansion and preparations for the future direction of the school at the forefront of our minds. As with most schools, evolution has taken place progressively as the years have passed. M.I.S. began life as a proposed sister school to MCCI, a Montessori school previously located in Naklua, which catered to younger years. M.I.S.(Mooltripakdee International School) opened its doors in August 2010, located in the countryside close to the picturesque Lake Mabprachan. The potential for the new school quickly became clear and in 2011 MCCI amalgamated with M.I.S., relocating to the new site. Being on the fringes of Pattaya, rather than more centrally located, has resulted in land being more affordable and indeed available, allowing for expansion as and when necessary. As an added bonus, the countryside location compliments the stunningly presented gardens and grounds; walking through the grounds of M.I.S. is like walking through a tropical paradise. The school is currently undergoing some of the biggest changes it has seen since the amalgamation. The popularity of the school has resulted in our student intake skyrocketing; we now have almost 500 students enrolled, meaning multiple classes per year group. Our educational levels now span from Preschool up to Year 10, with Year’s 11, 12 and 13 to be
added on a rolling basis. We have recently begun implementing an IGCSE program for our Year 10’s, providing them with internationally recognized qualifications at the end of their studies with us.Meanwhile, we have introduced an intensive English language programme in our primary school that gives our students with limited English an intensive daily lesson with a trained English language teacher to help them get up to speed. Physically, the school site is also undergoing a huge expansion as we speak. A brand new subject building is currently under construction, which will be providing multiple classrooms for lessons such as art, Chinese, music and Thai. We plan to open this building in January 2018. Two new football fields have also been installed, enhancing our ability to hold competitions with other schools. Perhaps most excitingly, we are due to start building a new sport facility and combined auditorium. This will be a two-floor building, with a dual focus. Part of the building will contain a full

size basketball court which can also be used for other sports such as volleyball and badminton. This will have multiple changing rooms and toilets attached over two floors, allowing us to host visiting teams from other schools with ease, enhancing our sports program considerably. The other key section of the building will be an auditorium capable of holding 250 people. This will be used primarily to enhance our performing arts productions and drama lessons, but will also provide a fantastic space for concerts and the school choir when necessary. Construction of this building will commence in the next academic year. This has all been made possible by the relative availability of land in the spacious
surroundings of M.I.S.and the insight, drive and passion for student’s education displayed by our owner, Wiravan Mooltripakdee. Gregg Sangster is Year 2 teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.

Garden International School's Secondary production of Almost, Maine was a sell-out success. Almost, Maine by John Cariani is a series of short plays based around the fictional community of Almost. The show played to sell-out crowds for three nights in the school's Drama Room, which featured snow and a wintry backdrop. Secondary students put on some exceptional performances. Some have appeared in several productions while, for others, it was their first time in a show. The production was sponsored by Encounter Church. The event was sponsored by Indorama and Aditya Birla. Mark Beales is assistant head of Secondary at Garden International School.
More than 190 University of Portsmouth students from Southeast Asia were awarded their degrees in a recent ceremony in Singapore. Students from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Brunei and China were joined by more than 550 friends and family members for the celebration at the Fullerton Hotel ballroom. They were presented with their awards by the UK university's Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Galbraith. Nurfahizun Jofri was among the students attending the ceremony. Since studying for an Msc in Forensic IT, she has landed a position as a system associate at the Empire Hotel and Country Club in Brunei. She said of her time in Portsmouth: “I found the practice of cross-examining digital evidence using the tools and software at the University very beneficial. I was able to experience the Mock Court in the School of Law and collect evidence at a mock crime scene.” Also among those receiving their degrees was Putu Wirya Nagiantha who took an Msc in Forensic Accounting before returning to Indonesia and resuming his work as an auditor. He said: “I found the degree really helped in my job, particularly conducting investigations and forensic tasks.” Povanaswari Devindaran (MSc Project Management) found work as a project manager for British Petroleum in Kuala Lumpur after studying at Portsmouth. She found the studies at the University complemented her work and said her experience with fellow students from different industries had broadened her view and perspective of project management. Of more than 22,000 full-time students at the University, approximately 4,000 are international students from more than 150 countries. Southeast Asian students make up 15 per
cent of the international students and a similar number study with overseas partner campuses such as those in Singapore and Myanmar. Singapore educational partner Kaplan organised the ceremony with the University. Graduating Accounting and Financial Management student Wan Wei Yu represented the class of 2017 by delivering an emotional speech in which he recalled fond memories from lectures, thanked his family and highlighted the importance of lifelong learning. After the ceremony Professor Galbraith said: “It was a pleasure to visit Singapore and meet so many hard-working, talented and inspirational students and their families. They are a credit to the University of Portsmouth and I’m delighted that we have been able to provide learning opportunities that have launched, developed and enhanced their careers. During his speech at the ceremony, University Pro ViceChancellor (Global Engagement) Chris Chang congratulated the graduates and said the University was proud of their achievements. Chang also thanked University lecturers and professional staff for their hard work, adding: “We are a university that is bold not old, a university which is a catalyst for change and which has a strong sense of energy, flexibility and dynamism. We are committed to providing the very best distinctive student experience, an experience that leads our graduates to make a real contribution to society.” Also at the ceremony were Professor Gioia Pescetto, dean of Portsmouth Business School, and Adele Wong, director of the Southeast Asian office. Representing Kaplan were the institute’s President Leon Choong and Provost, Associate Professor Rhys Johnson.

The two new variants will resonate with the new-age riders' sense of style, while they continue to embrace the pure motorcycling experience. Carrying the rich legacy forward, Royal Enfield continues to refresh its flagship Classic series, which has witnessed phenomenal success worldwide since its launch.
Introduced in 2008, the Royal Enfield Classic is designed on the lines of the J2 and it is a tribute to the retro look of British motorcycles in the post-World War II era. The Classic retains the quintessential classic British styling of the 1950s; simple, harmonious, proportioned and finished. Powered by Royal Enfield’s 500cc unit construction engine (UCE), front and rear mudguards, the headlight casing, the fuel tank, the oval tool box, the exhaust fins, the speedometer dials, the single-seat spring saddle, tail light assembly and the headlamp cap, all these conform to the native imagery of British motorcycles in the aftermath of World War II.
Royal Enfield Himalayan The Royal Enfield Himalayan brings together 60 years of riding experiences in the Himalayas, in a completely ground-up design, and powered by a new LS 410 engine, paving the way for a purer, non-extreme and more accessible form of adventure touring in Thailand. It’s off-road capabilities make it adept for riding though potholed urban jungles as it does for treacherous mountain trails. Available in two signature
colour options—Granite and Snow, is the Himalayan is powered by a completely new and evolved overhead camshaft engine platform that forms the base for its new long stroke LS 410 engine, that delivers high torque and usable power at lower RPMs, making it for smooth riding in higher gears at lower speeds, easy to climb hills, or to maneuver through traffic. Its un-intimidating spartan design, a flat torque curve, accessible seat height and long suspension travel alongside the ease of ownership, make the Himalayan is an extremely versatile motorcycle that is adept for long rides while equally being
the definitive choice to navigate our urban jungles. Touring utility is built inherently into the Himalayan. A 15 litre fuel tank provides a long range of approximately 450 kilometers. Luggage mounting points, for hard panniers, soft luggage and jerry cans are integral to the motorcycle’s design. A simple instrument cluster keeps track of speed, direction, ambient temperature, travel time, service intervals and multiple trip distances. Most importantly, an ergonomical sync between footpegs, handlebar and seat height provide a comfortable upright riding posture that is necessary for long rides. An
accessible 800mm seat height with lower mass-balance ensure ease of planting feet on ground for complete control. Royal Enfield Himalayan comes fitted with dual-purpose tyres that lend a confident grip and performance across a range of conditions. In addition to complete braking control, the 300mm front and 240mm rear disc brakes help to reduce braking effort. The Himalayan is more than the sum of its parts; not only does it deliver on its intent of being a purpose-built motorcycle for the Himalayas, it is also extremely versatile and designed to be your only motorcycle.

Local Sports Rob, Tom, and Dave all winners at Treasure Hill by Dick Warberg
Brown left Dave Cooper right and that leaves Tom Herrington in the middle. Treasure Hill – St We're winding down the year but things are heating up at Tropical golf. The golfer of the year race is close, a golfer of the month contest is shaping up, and don't forget the Christmas bash is not far off. Numbers are creeping up and many old friends are back in town, so twenty five hopefuls signed up to head to Tricky Treasure Hill. Last week the group played difficult Mountain Shadow, but there was no rest as Treasure Hill is every bit as difficult. Many holes have an “hour glass” shaped fairway that narrows down to dangerous territory, requiring a decision to lay up or try to thread the needle. There are also quite a few “dare” holes over hazards that define
risk/reward. Playing off the yellow tees, the course was in very good condition and greens quite fast. Upon arrival there was much concern and confusion since other large golf groups were also there. What was shaping up to be a long slow day self-healed when some groups, with no help from the starter, decided to tee off on #10. No one broke handicap this day, but several that met or came very close. A-Flight (0-16): Returning Rob Brown (c/h 11) had the fewest strokes of the day with 36 points off his enviable handicap. Excellent golf Rob! Andre Van Dyk (16) came second with 35 points with Richard Kubicki (16) rounding out the flight with 33 points. B-Flight (17-24): Tom
Herrington (18) continued his improved form with 36 points, earned in part by removing his shirt for one mud-splattering shot, sending Caddies running. Dick Warberg (19) took second on count-back over Mick Coghlan (23), both turning in fine 35 point performances on this tough layout. C-Flight (25+): Dave Cooper (26) and Barry Elphick (26) had matching scores of 36 points from their matching handicaps, with Dave winning on count-back. Karen Brown (43) added some class to the roll call by earning 31 points and the third spot in the flight. Congrats! Best Nines: Best nines (non winner) again went to Brian Parish and Graham Buckingham.
Steve Younger climbs the mountain first and is the fastest!
by Peter Grey
Mountain Shadow GC Today saw 18 eager golfers waiting to take on Mountain shadow, the two buses were filled with some optimistic golfing enthusiasts. And they were not let down! Playing from the White Tees scores were not too bad and with the course being in the condition that it was scores were quite good with not that much separating the field! Having not played today I am reliant on the feedback that I get from players. Today’s feedback was all good the course was in great shape, fairways were good and even first cut was cut quite short. Greens played true and the weather stayed on our side, what more could you asked for? We have no trouble in singing the praises for this course its management and the team that keeps this welloiled machine operational. Numbers left us to being playing one division only with all novelties in play! It was Steve Younger that set the course alight returning to the judges with 38 points keeping him one shoot clear of a greatly improved John Coetzee. Third was the ever consistent Mashi taking this via the countback from Colin Stielow with Rudy Regenass turning out in fifth place.
Rob Davis, George Wilson, Mal Foord, Steve Younger, John Coetzee and Frank Riley. Results: 1st - Steve Younger 38 points 2nd - John Coetzee 37 points 3rd - Mashi Kaneta 35 points 4th - Colin Stielow 35 points 5th - Rudy Regenass 33 points

Sixty-four wins PAGS low gross by Jeff Wylie
A strong field of 158 players, including a year high of 21 Ladies, gathered at Phoenix Gold on this last Tuesday of the month, for the penultimate PAGS Tournament of 2017 sponsored by The New Nordic Group. The golfing conditions were of the highest order, clear skies with a light breeze and a course turned out in good condition, although played from short tees on occasions. The fairways were firm and giving up some run, while the greens, and pin placements offered plenty of challenges while running smooth and true. There was some high calibre scores turned in, along with some fine individual efforts for the technical prizes available on each hole. None better than the outstanding round of 64 turned in by +1 marker, Tony Pike, to win the low gross by a lazy eight strokes. Tony’s hot score was only good enough for 2nd in the A Flight, although he did pick up the maximum two technicals. The ladies winner in the field, as the popularity from the ladies increases, was Wiyada Stafford (22) with an outstanding score of 46 points, to go with her near pin on lakes 6, edging Bunsong Brown (31) who signed for 45 points. C flight for 21+ handicappers saw a runaway winner in the division, clearly won by Kjell Vitre (21) with a day’s best stableford score of 47 points, while Mauri Friman (23) and Ake Gustavsson (22) got the other podium spots with 42 and 41, respectively.. In the B flight (13 – 20) it was David Shannon
Tony Pike - Low Gross Winner
Steve Truelove - A Flight Winner (18) leading the way with another outstanding score of 45 points. Countbacks were required to separate the minor placings, which went to Martin Kempton (13) with a back 9 of 23, aided by his eagle on ocean 9, over John Anderson (17) who recorded 18 points on the back 9, after both had recorded 43 points. In the A flight (0 – 12), a three-way countback was required to separate the leaders on 43 points. First place went clearly to Steve Truelove (11)
with a spectacular back 9 of 26 points, while low gross winner Tony Pike edged Jeff Wylie (10) into third spot, on their scores on the 18th hole, after being unable to split them on back 9, six or three. Steve and Jeff also getting a technical prize each, Steve a Long Drive on Lakes 9, while Jeff got an approach on ocean 6. Honorable mentions this month go out to Gerd Riedler, Gunnar Lund, Ari Hagren and Harald Grande on picking up the maximum of two technical prizes, no small feat given the high quality golf played on the day. With the course playing short, there were several eagles recorded today, with lake 6 giving up three. The catering crew led by Dave, did a bang up job, feeding the host of players and guests prior to the prize giving, and I am sure all were pleased with the array of food, which again was supported by our friends from KPK Foods. We will all look forward to next month’s event, the final for the year, with the order of merit still up for grabs, at Phoenix Gold on Wednesday December 20. Note the date, and contact Shane
Wiyada Stafford - Ladies Winner on 0863720084 or through Birdie at www.birdie. in.th to ensure your preferred tee time.

Alex leads the Field Emmett fires one up!
by Steve Ellison
by James Olsen
Greenwood Well it was 27 eager golfers to take the buses up the highway to tackle Greenwood CC golf course. We had two buses and a few cars making the journey. “Looks like we got us a Convoy” On the buses the usual suspects were predicting as they do every time we venture out, it is a vast different trip home with most of the punters taking the time to lament the day’s outing. This is a very funny game, it can do your headin if you let it! We played C and A nines, from the yellow tees and although at 6,100 yards, scores were good on the day but this is a course that sorts out a lot of golfers. The course was in good nick with the greens playing true. Weather was also good to us, a bit of a breeze would have been good as it did get hotter as the day got longer. We played. In Division 1, Alex Field showed others how to do it he returned a good score 37 points was enough to take the prize. Second past the post was Paul Smith with Steve Younger finishing third beating Dave Maw and Paul Hack via the count back system. Division 2, it was Mal Foord with 37 points who took the prize from JC Lhoste with Tony Cook arriving in third also via the count back system from George Wilson.

Tom and Gordon again win at Mt. Shadow by Dick Warberg Mountain Shadow – Stableford Wow, December already and another year is on the final hole. A great one it’s been, but there is still some business to tend to. A new golfer of the month is starting, and most important is there is a tight race for golfer of the year! Each round, nay, each stroke counts big for the lucky few that are in contention. This Friday17 Tropical golfers headed out to tough Mountain Shadow to test their skills. Our tee time was an hour earlier than normal, and despite a few people looking a little tired, most liked starting, and finishing, the day early. Mt. Shadow is a tough course from the blue tees, but we must regretfully agree it is a fair test of golf. Accuracy is the key here, and long hitters left drivers in the bag on many holes. Strategic layups are more common here, and the wise know how to use their handicap strokes. Oh, and the course condition was very
good or better, so no scores could be blamed on that. Scores were a bit on the low side as expected, but there were a large number of scores in the “very low” range. Fortunately those go unpublished here. A-Flight (0-18): After a long absence Tom Herrington (c/h 18) found some rhythm and the winner's circle with 36 points, the best of the day. Just one short putt back the returning Dick Warberg (18) took a bow with 35 points, followed by long hitting Steve Truelove (11) with 34. B-Flight (19+): Byron Nelson has golf's and maybe all sports most impressive
record with eleven consecutive wins. Gordon Clegg (31) is trying to match that, having now earned honors in nine consecutive rounds, all but one or two as wins! Despite a free-falling handicap “Gordon Again” still has his mojo and won his flight with 34 points. How does he do it? Next up but four shots back Barry Elphick (25) gathered 30 points, and the returning Karen Brown (35) took a curtsy with 28 points. Stay tuned. Best Nines: Best nines (non winner) went to Brian Parish and Graham Buckingham. Never give up.
Stephen Dunn, Fred Birch, and Alain Hefner back at the bar. Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees First off, we are really looking forward to the Pattaya Matchplay competition starting next week and hope we make a better showing than last time. Good luck to all! Green Valley has been our Monday venue for the last ten years but for those who haven’t heard, all three golf courses here will be closed over the first two weeks of January for an Asian Q-School event. I assume that is why they have sanded the back nine greens. Andrew Brannigan is winding down his trip to Pattaya and off back home this week so it was good to see him take another spot on the podium with 37 points. Our buddy Mark Wood had the excellent near pin envelope from Capt. Phil and stalwarts Peter Thomas and Fred Birch cloned a 38 for a second place tie. The man of the match was five shots ahead. Gary Emmett fired a blistering 43 out there and those strong rounds are getting to be more regular for Gary. Nice shootin’ there mate! Results: 1st –Gary Emmett (15) 43 points T- 2nd – Fred Birch (19) 38 points T- 2nd –Peter Thomas (23) 38 points 4th – Andrew Brannigan (20) 37 points Plutaluang Navy N&W – Stableford – Yellow Tees If your name starts with the letter A and you had 38 points, then stick around. A quirky podium board today sees three of the lads tied at the 38 point mark. Alan, Alain and Andrew were the top trio out there at the Navy course today. As usual, there were six-ball groups out there from other uniformed locals,so grin and bear it was the only option today. We have not played here in ages but comments were
generally good, condition was not great but acceptable for the fees asked. It is a lovely setting in the hills of Sattahip and the lighthouse par-3 is always a photo op for the tourists.“Mouse” McKendry came off slightly better than the other boys as he managed to claim the Caddy Smile near pin as well, so a tidy round indeed for Khun Alan. Results: T-1st – Alan McKendry (11) 38 points T-1st – Alain Hefner (16) 38 points T-1st – Andrew Brannigan (18) 38 points Emerald – Stableford – White Tees We are definitely in high season mode this week as traffic has been a nightmare down Soi Buakhao, but the weather has been amazing. We had cloudless skies at Emerald today and the back nine did get a bit on the hot side. Night time is cool (for the locals anyway) but even the visitors could not complain. The Emerald was in overall good condition today and the scoring was way better than average. Thirty-eight points would only get Robbie Taylor a third place box. Bud O’Meara hit it right for the near pin for our Caddy Smile project and also is rewarded with second place with 41 points. Kenny had a rough time of it last week, I won’t even mention that “S-word” we all fear. He has certainly rebounded back and the 44 he shot here today is one of his best. All cylinders were firing for Kenny and he takes the top prize after last week’s frustration, so it pays to be patient, laugh it off and hang in there! Results: 1st – Kenny Aihara (7) 44 points 2nd – Bud O’Meara (17)
41 points 3rd – Robbie Taylor (15) 38 points Khao Kheow A & C – Stableford – Yellow Tees The lads were out in force today as we easily filled our 6 tee times for the comp on the A and C tracks. Pristine was how you would describe the course today and even the greens were faster than normal. Khao Kheow is on our heavy rotation list and will continue to be as both management and maintenance are excellent here. Alain Hefner is visiting us from France and continues his good form. His 34 is good for second place on the podium in a tie with Kenny Aihara. It was all Fred Birch and 36 was good enough for the win and adding more winnings to the “House Fund” for himself and Yui. Freddy also padded his pocket with the near pin prize and birdie to boot! That’s the glass of wine we bought him for the birdie! Our neighbour Steve Dunn is back after a long rest and joins us from his bar Café Racer here on LK Metro. Results: 1st – Fred Birch (19) 36 points T-2nd – Kenny Aihara (7) 34 points T-2nd – Alain Hefner (16) 34points The Golf Club is “The Home of Golf in Pattaya” and located in the Heart of Pattaya on Soi L.K. You & Your Pets
Cut the cost of pet care It seems like the cost of living in Pattaya is on the rise for everything from consumer items to people food and, yes, even pet food as well as supplies and medical care. How can you save money on health care for your pet? Here are a few tips: Don’t be stingy with visits to the vet. Most importantly, have your dog or cat examined every year. In the long run, it is more expensive—and risky—to treat illnesses than to protect against them. It’s also a good idea to shop veterinary practices by comparing fees for preventative care. Speaking of preventative care, recognize that some vaccines are optional, while others are essential in preventing serious diseases. Never skip any shots that are mandatory for your pet’s protection, but do talk to your vet about personalizing your pet’s vaccine protocol to save on unnecessary shots. You also can save money by having your dog or cat neutered. The relatively inexpensive procedure not only ensures that you won’t have a house full of little furry creatures, it also prevents serious health problems, including uterine, ovarian and testicular cancers. You probably know not to feed sugary items to your pet, but that doesn’t mean he or she will not suffer dental problems requiring expensive treatment. To preclude dental diseases, which can lead to heart and kidney problems, brush your pet’s teeth regularly. Start a dental routine to keep your pet’s teeth and gums healthy. Ask your veterinarian what products to use and how often.
Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/ Don’t use toothpaste made for people, most of which contain fluoride and may irritate your pet's stomach. As we’ve often reminded readers, you must protect your pet from parasites. Flea and tick infestations can cause a host of costly medical problems from minor skin irritations to life-threatening blood loss, not to mention human ailments. Stick with a topical flea and tick solution to keep the critters at bay. Make sure to only use products as directed, and never use a product intended for a dog on a cat. Don’t allow your pet to overeat and become obese. That, too, can lead to severe health problems. Get advice from your vet on appropriate amounts of food to feed your pet, and use good quality pet food; it’s often more cost-effective than a homemade diet. Finally, groom your pet at home yourself and save the price of visits to your groomer or vet. At least provide regular nail-trimmings and brushings. It’s good for your pet, it will reduce the amount of hair floating around your home, and your cats will have fewer hairballs. One last thought for you smokers out there: quit-for the sake of your pet and everyone in your household. Secondhand smoke is no joke for pets—it can cause asthma, bronchitis, lymphoma and oral, nasal and lung cancers. Quit now and you’ll save money on vet bills as well as cigarettes. At the very least, avoid smoking around your pet.
Celia and Wilson
This lovely mum and son combination were rescued from our local temple. Celia had 3 kittens 2 of which have already been re-homed, leaving just this little black and white rascal Wilson. This "Purrfect pair" would love to go to a new home together if possible.
Mr.Tibbs
This friendly handsome boy has been with us for a few years now, he just loves playing in the garden and is a good cat for catching vermin. He would love to go to a new home where he could be the centre of attention, but could also be a good friend for your lonely puss.
Temple kitten 1
This lovely kitten was born here just 6 weeks ago: we found her mum at our local temple. She was heavily pregnant. Just a few days later she gave birth to 5 beautiful babies. This one is called Moley and has many lovely colours.
Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being.
Hit by Car
Temple kitten 2
This next lovely kitten is an unusual ginger girl as most ginger cats are boys. Just like her sister above, she is lively, friendly and very naughty as most kittens are. It would be nice to re-home her with one of her brothers and sisters.
An animal in pain is more likely to bite. So if your dog or cat is hit by a vehicle, before moving it put a muzzle over his snout; use a scarf, belt, or towel (note: don’t muzzle the animal if it is vomiting). Get the animal off the road by gently sliding it onto a towel or blanket. Don't lift the animal. Make sure it’s warm, as it may be in shock. If it seems to have any broken bones, do your best to not move it too much.
Going to the Dogs... If you can look at a dog and not feel vicarious excitement and affection, you must be a cat.
Cat Corner Tip Hold the Milk
~Carrie Latet Most of Santa’s reindeer have malesounding names, such as Blitzen, Comet, and Cupid. However, male reindeers shed their antlers around Christmas, so the reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh are likely not male, but female or castrati. Norwegian scientists have hypothesized that Rudolph’s red nose is probably the result of a parasitic infection of his respiratory system.
The idea that cats thrive on milk is a myth. So whether you have a cat or several kittens, hold the milk. They don’t need it. In fact, most cats are lactose intolerant; they cannot properly digest the sugars in milk. It could give them diarrhea. While some little tigers have no problem digesting milk, again—they don't need it. So, most vets say you should skip it.
