Retirement visa options

Given the complexity of Thailand’s various long-term visa rules, Pattaya Today has spoken to 20 local expats (aged over 50) about the various alternatives currently on offer.

The research did not consider aliens with work permits nor those with permanent residency rights.

The three main alternatives are the traditional one year extension of stay, commonly known as the retirement visa, the new 10 year visa announced earlier this year and the various options available under the Elite card initiative. There is also the annual extension of stay based on a foreigner’s marriage to a Thai national.

Far and away the most popular option is the annual extension of stay for retirees which requires income or bank balances of at least 800,000

baht. Bill, a 62 year old Brit, said he had looked at all the options. “I found the new 10 year retirement visa required a lot of complex paperwork including police clearance from the UK and possession of comprehensive Thai medical insurance.” He said he had limited medical cover from a UK company but had been told foreign-based policies were ineligible.

However, not everyone agreed. Bob, an American expat, said he had applied for the 10 year visa – in fact two chunks of five years – because his American wife and children could share the advantages of long-stay in Thailand. “We all feel much more secure with a visa option which does not require annual renewal,” he said. “My wife and I previously held the one

year retirement option, but found that we each had to have 800,000 baht in a Thai bank.

The bureaucracy was actually more hassle than the new 10 year path.”

The Elite card also has its champions. This requires a one-off payment of between 500,000 baht and two million baht for residency rights from five to 20 years. Jacques, a 55-year old French citizen, said he had paid 500,000 baht for the “baby” Elite card which allowed him a five years’ stay but renewable annually. “I do not have to do 90 days reporting in person as Elite sees to that,” he said, “and I don’t have to stand in long lines at the airport immigration.”

associated with one year extensions of stay.

Introduced in 2003, the Elite card is now a privatized company owned by the Thai tourist authority with the aim of earning revenue from highend visitors and investors. It currently has 4,300 members with most members coming from UK, China and several Asean countries. There are now various options and pricing structures which allow for family membership in the scheme.

Critics of the Elite card complain about the cost and the fact that the advantages can be nebulous. For example, the discounts at sports facilities and various retail outlets are not restricted to Elite card holders. A half-promise in 2003 that the Elite card might

News Drunked monk caught by police

A monk was caught by the police during a check point at the intersection of South Pattaya and Third Road. Police officers said that while their doing their regular checkpoint in the area they noticed a car driven by someone who is dressed like a monk so they ask the driver to stop and identified the driver a Prah Paisan, 59, a monk from Wat Chaimangkararam in Pathum Thani Province. He was caught with violation of driving under the influence of alcohol. He was very drunk to talk so the police decided to bring him to the police station and will be brought to the temple Wat Thammasamakee in South Pattaya to report him about his crime committed and will be taken out of Monkhood before going to the jail.

Lesbian robbed ATM

Lesbian, Virai Chadon, 38, was caught by police officers after reviewing from CCTV of an ATM machine in Naklua.

Complainant and victim Kongsak Thongsuk, reported to the police that his ATM card was withdrawn by someone in Naklua area. The police reviewed the CCTV and identified the suspect.

Virai amitted the crime and confessed that she was standing behind the victim while he was withdrawing in an ATM machine when Kongsak left his ATM card in the machine so Virai tried to

entered his PIN code, luckily because she was born in the same year as the victim, she entered the correct pin and withdrawn 55,000 baht in different ATM machine in the area. As she went to the fourth one, the card was captured by the machine because the victim already reported his ATM was lost.

Police followed the victim to her apartment using the CCTV camera in the city and caught her with only 47,000 baht left because she already spent partying with her friends.

Drug pusher arrested

A Thai man identified as Wajatsawin Chawsuan, 48, was shot by his friend on the arm after a heated argument during a drinking session. The suspect was identified by the victim’s wife as a pad Thai seller in the same market in Soi Kao Talo where his husband also works as a tent assembler. The injured victim said that he was just talking to the suspect after having a fight with another man. The suspect with another companion went to the victim’s house on the same night and shot him twice.

Ganja dealer Sanya Seuy was caught by police after an entrapment operation was conducted by the police. They use a foreigner police asset to act as a drug buyer and asked Sanya if he is selling Marijuana. The police asset said that he wants to buy worth 85,000 baht of Marijuana but Sanya confirmed that he can only get 5 kilograms of Marijuana and will meet in a hotel in Naklua. So during their meet-up, the asset gave him the marked money and police caught Sanya, who is very well-known drug pusher in Walking Street, and he admitted that he only gets the drugs from a supplier.

A police officer died on the spot after crashing his car on an eight-wheeler car in Sukhumvit Road. The victim, Parinya Detammarit, a deputy police officer of Chonburi, died on the spot after hitting the back of the truck. Another victim of the crashed, a taxi driver, said that his taxi was also hit by the police officer

Retirement visa options permit foreigners to own land under certain conditions was never ratified.

At present, far-and-away the most popular option for retirees is the one year extension of stay for retirement. Its main advantage is its cheapness (1,900 baht + re-entry if required)and the fact that the documentation is relatively straightforward. However, some commentators believe that the 800,000 baht minimum requirement could be hiked whilst some government sources have expressed concern about long-term foreigners who do not have medical insurance.

The X-O or 10 year retirement is only months old, but has so far not had a major effect on the expat market.

Most retirees say they prefer to remain with the one year option – provided the ground rules do not change. One disadvantage of X-O is that a sum of money from 1.8 million to three million baht has to be lodged in a Thai

bank on a long-term basis.

The Elite card is the most expensive to obtain but requires little documentation and certainly simplifies responsibilities with Thai immigration. Although it is true that Elite can handle the 90 days reporting on a customer’s behalf, this holds true only for those members living in major cities and not in rural areas. Elite membership networks are also useful for those needing work permits or investment introductions.

The one year extension based on marriage to a Thai citizen is a route mainly used by expats under 50 who are too young to apply for the retirement option. It requires at least 400,000 baht in a Thai bank or proof of overseas income to the same amount. Application and renewal can be slow processes because of the substantial documentation required and the need to show that the marriage is not on the rocks or a fake arrangement.

SOS Rice 2017

The annual Father Ray Foundation SOS Rice Appeal will be taking place again this year, on the first two weekends in December.

There will also be one extra day on Tuesday, December 5, the day that will now be officially known and celebrated as King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s Birthday Anniversary.

Each year an appeal is made to the people of Pattaya, asking them to make a donation of a bag of rice which will be used to help feed the 850 children and students currently living and being educated at the Father Ray Foundation. Each year the supermarkets of Pattaya invite the children, students and volunteers from the Foundation into their stores to collect donations from the shoppers. Stores taking part this year

include Foodland, Big C, Big C Extra, Best, Central Festival beach Road, Makro and Tesco Lotus; cash donations can also be made at branches of 7-Eleven. Apart from rice, the Foundation also needs cooking oil, sugar, salt, fish sauce, canned fish and dried noodles.

The Foundation provides nutritious meals to the hundreds of children living at the Father Ray Children’s Home, Children’s Village and DropIn Center. It provides breakfast for all the toddlers attending the Day Care Center as many won’t have food at home. It cooks three meals a day for the students at the Vocational School for People with Disabilities and the School for the Blind, and it makes sure the food served is the freshest

and most nutritious available. It has an organic farm producing food that goes straight from land to kitchen to plate, making sure there that the children receive as little chemicals as possible. In one year the Foundation cooks 75,000 kgs of rice (165,000 lbs to our American friends). It goes through 29,000 liters of cooking oil and 5,000 kgs of salt and sugar. This year the children and students of Pattaya once again need your help to make sure they have enough to eat.

Our Community Charity bike ride

The second Father Ray Foundation Charity Bike Ride took place on the morning of Sunday October 5. What was hoped to be a calm day weather wise, turned out to be one of the windiest days of the year, mainly due to the aftereffects of Typhoon Damrey which had devastated parts of Vietnam, killing twenty seven as it reached land fall.

This year the ride started at the Father Ray Children’s Village, near Lake Mabprachan, and Father Michael Picharn, Vice President of the Father Ray Foundation, greeted the more than six hundred riders who arrived to participate.

Many riders were wearing a selection of very colourful outfits and riding the most up to date bikes available.

Of the hundreds of riders taking part only a handful were foreign, including the one rider who crossed the finish line first; however, it was not officially a race, though some people just can’t help themselves.

As well as being a lot of fun, and the 35 kilometer course will keep anyone fit and healthy, the aim of the bike ride was to raise much needed funds for the Father Ray Foundation, Pattaya’s largest charitable organization. Today there are 850 underprivileged children and students with disabilities being cared for and educated at the Foundation, and the money raised will go into the Education Fund.

WHA Group and Chulalongkorn University Sign MoU with Dusit Thani Pattaya in performing Laem Chabang for Wastewater Management and Treatment Krathin religious rites

WHA Corporation PCL, Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Engineering and the municipality of Laem Chabang jointly announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaboration and knowledge exchange in the field of wastewater management and treatment.

Effective for three years, this MoU agreement is part of WHA Group’s Clean Water for Planet CSR initiative. It covers the joint organization by WHA Corporation and Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Engineering of practical training courses for the executives and staff of Laem Chabang City Municipality on wastewater management and treatment.

This MoU agreement follows the signing, in September 2016, of an initial MoU between WHA Corporation and Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Engineering that enabled students, through a custom-built curriculum, to develop new technologies in water management and treatment.

Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Engineering will provide experts and academic knowledge while WHA Corporation will open its Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate (ESIE) to the trainees. Through easy-to-learn and well-designed training courses, the objective is to enhance their knowledge and encourage good practices in a real industrial environment. This will help improve the efficiency of wastewater management and treatment techniques in Laem Chabang. The scope of the MoU also covers the utmost use of treated water for sustainable water management, with the hope to see this initiative serve as a successful pilot project for wastewater treatment in communities nationwide.

Tanin Subboonrueng, vice president - industrial estate operations and maintenance, Hemaraj Land And Development PLC, and Thanakrit Phothong, technician level 8, accepted the plaque and certificateon behalf of ESIE (Rayong), from Somchai Harnhiran, permanent secretary of Industry Ministry.

ESIE was recognized for its impactful role in developing eco-industrial towns, with greater awareness of environmental conservation and safety standards, in line with the government’s Industry 4.0and Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) projects.

Management and team members at Centra by Centara Maris Resort Jomtien held a bike campaign on November 1. Bike routing 9 kilometers from the resort to Pattaya Second Road and turned left at Chaiyapruek junction to beach road and back to resort. Recorded time for bike around the area is one hour. The activity received great support from the team who joined the campaign totalled to 20 participants.

The purpose of the activity is to encourage the staff to exercise and to maintain good health by setting a target of 10 Kilometers per week.

COOKING METHOD Deep fried black crab in medium-high heat until golden brown.

Preheat the saucepan to medium-heat, add a little oil, chilli and garlic in the saucepan until smell good.

Then turn the heat to low, add young corn, sugar snap pea, young green peppercorn, shimeji mushroom and stir thoroughly.

Add seasoning sauce white soya, oyster sauce, sugar, fish salt, and black soy sauce, turn the heat to high and stir together.

Turn the heat to low, add squid ink spaghetti, stir thoroughly to mix well.

Add hot basil to mix in the pan.

Turn off the heat and bring all in paella pan Top with fried hot basil and kaffir lime leaves Ready for serve.

Has Changed Hands but the Chef Remains…

It’s no secret that Brits love Indian food. It first appeared in the U.K. way back but by the start of the Second World War there were six curry houses in Britain. The arrival of Indians after the war to help to rebuild London fed the nascent growth with migrant workers establishing cafes and canteens to feed their families and curious natives soon discovering the spicy food was a revelation to their own bland, rationed cooking. By 1982 there were 3,500 curry restaurants

in Britain, today there are 12,000 with London having more Indian restaurants than Mumbai or Delhi.

This phenomenal growth has spread world-wide and no more so than our own Pattaya.

Mick and I are long stayers here and back when we arrived 16 years ago there was only one Indian restaurant. Now of course they have sprouted all over the city with new establishments appearing weekly.

One on our list is a small family run curry shop tucked away in the hinterland of Rompho market (Jomtien Second Road) it delivers traditional Indian flavours at very affordable prices. The chef hasn’t changed but the restaurant is now under the new management by Mr. Singh who turns out exactly the staple Indian food you want to eat. The setting is family-style with clean, neat tables, fans and a small forecourt making it just the spot for a family meal or a friendly catch up with friends.

If you want a meal that satiates your tummy, tickles your taste buds try the

Punjabi food at The Curry Hut. The stand out attribute at this restaurant is that the kitchen takes great pride in their dishes and will happily tell you the ingredients and basis for their dishes.

We always kick off with samosas, either vegetable, chicken or mutton (from B.140). Prawn or vegetable pakoras also make for good finger food nibbles before moving on to more main dishes. The mutton seekh kebabs have been cooked in an authentic tandoor oven and hit the table sizzling and burnished with spicy flavours. Wine is not to everyone taste to quaff with curries but it is available and at B.150 for a humongous glass otherwise imported and local beers are readily available.

Breads are a particular interest with a dozen or so varieties from spiced nans to parathas, chapattis and Tandoori rotis making the ideal accompaniments to the Tandoori fish, chicken or prawns (from B.220).

The chicken is a house special and on our last visit this was our chosen item. It was cooked so well after it’s overnight marination in masalas, yoghurt, spices and lemon juice resulting in a tender joint with hidden depths - we loved it. Over a

dozen vegetable curries (from B.150) either complement the main courses or stand in their own right. Fried dahl (B.140) is always a favourite served in its comforting gravy. Aloo gobi is another ageless favourite combining the best creamy veggies with a light spicing and subtle flavour.

Chef gained his spurs specializing in curry sauces and there’s a dozen examples to choose from. Chicken Tikka Masala has its loyal fans while the Vindaloo is how we remember it from back home, Butter Chicken and Madras are another two stand out al pan, dishes. I would hazard that we all started out our curry journey with Chicken Korma which here is as expected a mild, gentle boneless chicken cooked in yoghurt and light spicing. The lamb section offers Mutton done eight ways including a tomato infused Rogan Josh (B.220) or a Vindloo with mashed spinach.

Seafood comes in an array of dishes from only B.200 including Prawn Chilli Masala, Prawn Karahi cooked with spices and tomatoes in a special pan and more. All are great partnered with one of the kitchen’s rice specialities, jeera, peas, mushroom pilau with special saffron, and four diverse biryanis featuring chicken, mutton, prawn or fish.

If you’re in mood for a delivery there’s no charge for orders over B.500 in the Jomtien area plus if you’re eating in-house all food is nett with no VAT or service charges to boost the bill.

No fancy prices here just good, solid food to put a smile on your

THE JOMTIEN PIG & WHISTLE Hearty, Nourishing Pub Grub The British have been responsible for many inventions over the centuries but probably the most imitated worldwide is the good old pub.

There’s hardly a country in the world that doesn’t boast an Olde English (or Scottish, Welsh or Irish) pub of some description. Their names have interesting origins, largely in the beginning from the masons and craftsmen involved in church building like The Masons Arms and The Carpenters. However Pig and Whistle is different as it is said to derive from two words “Piggin” and “Wassail”. A piggin is a vessel (such as a jug) used to carry ale and wassail means a toast as in “Good Health”.

We have two pubs with that name here, one The famous Pig & Whistle Pub, Restaurant (and inn) on Soi 7, Pattaya, which has been a constant here for many years through its many renovations and expansions. It is as

English as Big Ben and beans on toast and its perennial popularity is attributed to its friendly atmosphere and hearty servings of traditional pub grub at reasonable prices. The other is it’s sibling in Jomtien on Theppraya Road just as it turns down to Beach Road.

From 8.30 am to midnight this kitchen is in full flight providing the class of dishes that has made the Pig & Whistle famous. Inside the new establishment, the décor is a modern, loungy sports bar with three big screens showing the matches of the day, a big comfy bar and banquette seating for friendly get-togethers and sociable events.

The English breakfast menus are legendary and many a trencherman has been defeated by The Pig’s “full Monty” of two eggs, two English sausages, two rashers of Wiltshire bacon, baked beans, grilled mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, fried potatoes, fried bread

plus toast and marmalade at only B.190. Breakfast meat heads would be well and truly satisfied with the No. 1. Special set: fillet steak (100gr) two eggs any style, bubble and squeak and mushrooms for B.195. Even those folk who enjoy a kipper for breakfast are kept happy with the No.2 Special set: kipper, scrambled eggs, bacon and toast for B.195. All the breakfast items, including the bubble and squeak and black pudding can be ordered singly or with any item of your choice.

Mick and I visited the other evening to sample the English victuals and were very impressed with the hearty and the homely “just as Mum used to cook” quality of all this pub fayre.

Come hungry though, the portions are huge and the staff (especially Chef) disappointed if your plate isn’t licked clean before its return to the kitchen.

After much deliberating (it all reads so well), we chose to kick off the proceedings with a portion of their signature chicken liver pate (B.120).

Deeply rich in flavour and served with dark brown bread toast and garnish, it was top drawer and considering the size of the portion would make for a very good lunch or afternoon snack. Other starters include the perennially popular Norwegian prawn cocktail, spring rolls or one of their home made soups with the pea and ham variety coming highly recommended.

We should mention the sandwiches now before we move on to the main

courses. These are wonderful “door stop” affairs: huge slices of thickly sliced white bread generously packed with the filling of your choice, i.e. hot chicken, roast beef, bacon and egg, sausage and egg and even pork and apple with prices from around B.75.

Half time by now and Mick and I were wondering where to take our taste buds for a nostalgic trip back to the times when the term “gastro-pub” had never been coined. We chose a traditional Wiltshire gammon steak served with an egg, fresh pineapple, garden peas and chips and the house bangers and mash.

Three UK recipe fat chubby sausages were served with caramelised onions, peas, a gravy that shrieked “mmm Bisto” and a mound of buttery mashed potatoes (B.235). Mick meanwhile was tucking in and reminiscing about the last time he had enjoyed a gammon steak so much (decades ago!) and we were both waxing lyrical about this classic, traditional food that had successfully made the long trek from the British Isles to the Land of Smiles.

Incidentally, the Thai menu abounds with over 30 items to please the most discerning Thai diner.

No self respecting pub would be without fish and chips and here it is a house speciality featuring huge fillets of white fish deep fried in a “light as a feather” batter and served with mushy peas and Chef’s individual tartar sauce.

So many mouth watering dishes on this menu – I haven’t even mentioned the famous Pig & Whistle mixed grill yet!

Valiant trenchermen only are required to tackle this gourmand’s platter of sirloin steak, pork chop, lamb chop, pork sausage, liver, kidney, fried eggs, grilled mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, fried onions and chips. It will set you back B.500 but then you probably won’t eat again for a week!

We really enjoyed the classic homely dishes here at the Jomtien Pig & Whistle.

For a true taste of the best of British it would be hard to beat this most convivial pub with its hearty, nourishing food, friendly staff and welcoming vibe.

Thailand’s very own Sunflower Fields Cool season in Thailand comes in November – December, the fields and roadsides of Sara Buri are filled with blooming sunflowers. The magnificent yellow hue is truly a sight to be seen as recommended by Sara Buri travel guides. There are over 10,000 acres of sunflower fields in Amphoe Phra Phuttha Bat, Kaeng Khoi, Nong Don, Nong Khae, Muak Lek, and the most in Wang Muang.

On the border between Lop Buri and Sara Buri Provinces, along Pattana Nikhom - Wang Muang Road, more and more sunflowers are being planted every year for the blooming sunflower festival, which is now spreading to other districts.

If you like soaking in the view of vast sunflower fields with horse and dairy cattle grazing nearby the surrounding vineyards, you have to visit Amphoe Wang Muang and Muak Lek, where the sunflower fields will be in full bloom in December – January. But if you prefer a family trip in hillside sunflower fields, Tambon Hin Son and Tha Khlo of Amphoe Kaeng Khoi are your places. You will find the most blooming sunflower fields around November – December, the 20,000 acres of beauty. Taking a Bangkok – Nong Khai train is also an amazing experience. You will see blooming sunflowers rolling past both sides of

the train when you get to Tambon Hin Son and Tha Khlo, especially in the middle and the end of December.

Apart from visiting the blooming sunflower festival, you can also learn how to plant and take care of sunflowers. There are many products made from sunflowers for sales. And if you have a little more time, you should visit Wat Phra Phuttha Bat and Wat Phra Phuttha Chai, go see caves and waterfalls, or perhaps try wine tasting at one of the vineyards. Such trips can be a relaxing distraction in Thailand.

Sunflower fields are growing in popularity and

gaining more and more attention, so many more provinces have started to planet sunflowers to increase tourism. Yet, Lop Buri and Sara Buri are still the hotspots of sunflower fields in Thailand.

Getting There Getting to the sunflower fields is the tricky part.

As they are working farms, there is little if any infrastructure for tourists to get there. The main fields are off the highway between Lopburi town and Saraburi, about 10 kilometers from Lopburi town. Using Siri or Google Maps is a great help getting there.

Triathlon Training 1. Train First starting a career in triathlon competition, you have to do a certain level of training with others, in groups and non-structured environments. Commit oneself to the training.

Training with people helps.

Athletes now have this notion to show off their fitness. They always want to be out in front when it should just be a training session.

2. Do drills People neglect cycling and running drills. Be more efficient, not falling apart halfway through the marathon because of the training drills. The reality is you should be doing drills all the time, year in and year out, a lot of pros do that.

3. Train for a race Don’t train for general fitness. Train in the heat and learn the currents of the water. Incorporate rides and runs similar to the course.

Find out if the course has lots of trails and hills, you need to run hills and train specific to the course.

4. Put yourself in pain This one is kind of sadistic.

Brutal training runs do help because come the day its going to be testing so prepare your body and mind for what is coming. It will be a horrible, but it will a huge impact on your overall race performance.

5. Spend the dough This is with a lot of agegroups. Spending so much time and effort training for an Ironman and they don’t bother to get new tires or get a tune-up. Get new tires. Get a new chain if you need it. You’ve invested so much time, just pay the couple of extra bucks. Don’t cheap out. It’s worth the extra expense.

6. Get out of shape Basically, you need to get out of shape to get back into shape. You need to physically and mentally recharge. You need to become a non-athlete.

Don’t always eat healthy, yes take a cheat day. Your are only human at the end of that day. It hurts your fitness, sure, but it makes for a better long-term career. Mark Allen did this and it worked for him. Doing this prepares your body for another season.

7. Don’t workout when sick I see so many athletes tinker with their workouts when they are sick. Don’t!!

Take the day off.

8. Know your body If you head out the door and your knee hurts, don’t push through it because then all of a sudden you’re injured and you are out. Stop exercising and take a couple of days off rather than be out a couple of weeks.

Constant burping can be annoying — and embarrassing! But there are some simple steps that can help you squelch belching.

The key is to reduce the amount of air you swallow.

A successful 3rd SPIA Asia – Asia's Sports Industry Awards and Conference came to a close with a black-tie Awards Gala Dinner with, Nattavuth Ruengves, deputy governor for Elite Sports and Sports Science of the Sports Authority of Thailand and Somyot Poompunmoung, president of the Football Association of Thailand and more than 400 VIP guests in attendance, gathered to celebrate the best-of-the-best in Asia's sports industry at Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld.

Attended by global sports agencies, governing bodies, international sports federations, global and Asian brands, event organisers and industry suppliers, the Awards Gala followed the two-day “The Business of Sports – Asia's Sports Industry in the Fast Lane III” conference which saw presentations and panel discussions from 35 leading sports experts and influencers from around the world as well as the presentation of the English Premier League Trophy by former Chelsea FC player and Club Ambassador Paulo Ferreira, and the Bundesliga Trophy by FC Bayern Munich.

Having received almost 400 SPIA Asia award submissions from 47 countries in 23 categories (17 Asian categories and six Thailand categories), the Awards Committee Members and the independent judging panel consisting of 27 high profile industry experts diligently scored Bronze, Silver and Gold

winners in each category.

“The standard of award submissions and competition has been exceptionally high this year.

Having started with almost 400 entries, all were subject to a fair and transparent judging process that culminated with thorough appraisals by a panel of more than 20 experts. In many categories the scoring was extremely close and the Bronze, Silver and Gold winners announced at the SPIA Asia Awards Gala should be very proud of their achievement,” commented Eric M. Thailand Surrogacy Law What does the term surrogacy mean?

Surrogacy is a method or agreement whereby a surrogate agrees to carry a pregnancy for another person, who will become the newborn child’s parents after birth.

A Surrogate is a woman who agrees to carry a child for another person or couple.

Is the process of surrogacy legalized in Thailand?

The National Legislative Assembly of Thailand has passed The Protection of Children Born from Assisted Reproductive Technologies Act (ART) in 2015. This act is designed to protect children born through Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) and it sets the legal procedures for the spouses to follow in order to go through surrogacy. Parents whose child was born to a surrogate prior to the Act coming into force can apply for court approval to have it enforced retroactively.

With the new law, the couples who apply for the Assisted Reproductive Technology and surrogacy do not need to adopt the child born from Assisted Reproductive technology. The law recognizes the infertile couples as legal parents of the child.

The purposes of the new Act are as follows: 1. to specify the parents’ legal status; 2. to control and specify the rights and duties of related parties during and after surrogacy; 3. to control and set boundaries on the proper use of enhanced technology, especially for achieving pregnancy in procedures; and 4. to prohibit surrogacy involving a business or profit-making enterprise.

The Act defines Assisted Reproductive Technology as any medical scientific procedure that removes eggs or sperm from a human body for the purpose of unnatural pregnancy, including artificial insemination of a third person. Surrogacy is defined as “pregnancy by ART.” Furthermore, the embryo must be created by only using the intended mother’s (or donor’s) egg and the intended father’s (or donor’s) sperm. In other words, the surrogate mother‘s eggs may not be used for the surrogacy procedure.

Commercial surrogacy is strictly prohibited under the Act. Those found guilty of being involved with surrogacy for profit and if anyone acts as an agent by requesting or accepting money, property, or other benefits in return for managing or giving advice about surrogacy will be liable to a huge fine and/or imprisonment.

What are the criteria for applying surrogacy in Thailand?

The applicants seeking for surrogacy must be legally married and both Thai nationals, wherein the wife cannot get pregnant. If only one of the applicants is Thai, the couple must have been legally married for at least 3 years.

What are the conditions for being the surrogate mother?

The surrogate mother must be related to either applicant by blood, but may not be either applicant’s parent or descendants of any degree. She should also have had a pregnancy before the surrogacy.

Additionally, if the surrogate mother is married, the husband’s approval is required.

Who shall have the legal parental rights after the baby is born?

The Act clearly states that the applicants will be the legal parents of the surrogate child and cannot deny the parentage of a child born through Assisted Reproductive Technology. The applicants and the surrogate mother must have a written agreement before the pregnancy occurs, indicating that the applicants will be the legal parents of the child.

Is surrogacy legal for single people and for same-sex couples?

Since Thailand Law does not recognize same-sex marriage, same-sex couples cannot pursue surrogacy.

This act is also not applicable for single people who wish to have a child through this procedure.

Centara appoints Deputy CEO Join Goodyear winter to lead next phase of growth celebration promotion

Centara Hotels and Resorts, announced the appointment of Markland Blaiklock as deputy chief executive officer. Blaiklock will be responsible for steering the continued expansion of Centara, which aims to double both its revenues and number of properties over the next five years.

The Habitat Group’s latest hotel development will carry the Wyndham brand under a franchise agreement with Wyndham Hotel Group, which will license the use of its Wyndham Hotels and Resorts® brand trademark.

Qatar Airways are the first Middle East carrier to announce direct flights into Thailand’s third international airport, U Tapao Rayong Pattaya International Airport (UTP).

Starting with four flights a week from January 28, 2018, the airline will use their new Boeing 787 Dreamliner with 232 seats in economy and 22 seats in business class from Doha.

Festival Season

One of the things our school, MIS, is known for is our propensity for holding largescale events to celebrate cultural occasions. Our second half-term commenced with not one, but two major ‘whole school’ events: Halloween, in its annual slot on October 31st and Loy Krathong, a moveable feast which this year pitched up on November 3rd the following Friday.

Halloween Whilst we have always marked Halloween at MIS, this year our newly-formed Events Committee really pushed the boat out, adding glamour and performing arts to the usual trick-ortreating shenanigans. The day began with a fashion parade which allowed the children to show-off their fantastic outfits. There was a great variety of costume themes on

display, not just vampires and decomposing zombies but superheroes, Disney characters and fictional characters such as Harry Potter as well.

This was followed by a Halloween variety show, devised and coordinated by our resident thespian Mr. Mike who made a lasting impression as a creepy compare reminiscent of Michael Keaton’s turn in the movie “Beetlejuice”.

Mr. Mike’s menacing M.C. stitched together a show that included dance, theatre, magic and music with both students and teachers taking part. Overall, this was a great production and it had our younger students enthralled for the best part of an hour.

Loy Krathong The annual Loy Krathong festival, which is celebrated throughout Thailand

sometime in November, is always a great spectacle.

Unlike the rambunctious Songkran water festival, Loy Krathong is a calmer, more reflective occasion when little vessels made from the trunk and leaves of the banana tree are decorated with flowers and incense before being floated on water.

In contrast to the flamboyant costumes the staff and children wore for Halloween, everyone appeared in the relatively restrained hues of traditional Thai dress. The children spent the morning making Krathongs in their classrooms and, following an early lunch, gathered on our large, covered basketball court to begin a colourful parade down to the smaller of our two football fields at the other end of the school campus.

Foundation students had a great time at a Halloween parade on October 31, with smiley witches and super-cute skeletons. After the parade the children visited the other classrooms to do Trick or Treat.

Many Secondary students, led by Prefect Mara, organised an awesome afternoon of spookiness and fun for Primary students.

There was a disco, a haunted house, a selection of activities and some Halloween-based refreshments. The scariest part was probably watching the teachers' moves on the dance floor! GIS is based in Ban

The school was divided into four large groups representing the four regions of Thailand: North, North-east (Isaan), Central and South. Each group, decked out in traditional regional costumes, then gave us a series of music and dance performances typical of their region. The afternoon was a great success and everyone present; parents, teachers, family members and friends described this as one of the most memorable Loy Krathong celebrations in the school’s history. The event culminated in a great feast, prepared by some of our parents, with regional food

from the area of Thailand their children had been representing.

So, with the Halloween masks now packed away and the Krathong floating off, carrying with them the hopes and prayers of their makers,

there is only one question left to answer: … what are we going to do for Christmas this year?

Students had a chance to make their own krathong in the morning, before sitting down to watch a Thai cultural show in the afternoon. Performances included dances from various regions in Thailand, including an

umbrella dance and ‘Issan’ dance, along with a demonstration of Muay Thai boxing from students and teacher Khun Wan. Lots of staff and students wore traditional Thai clothes to mark this popular annual event, which was organised by the school’s Thai department. GIS is based in Ban Chang, near Pattaya.

This & That Will the real Cleopatra stand up please?

Hardly beautiful, she had a hooked nose There have been around 45 movies about the life of Cleopatra, not to mention at least 15 made for television mini-series.

The very first offering, in fact, was a silent horror film of 1899 about an attempt to find the Egyptian queen’s mummy in a tomb which oddly anticipates the Tutankhamen “curse” theme of later decades. The 1899 silent, long thought not to have survived, turned up in Paris in 2005 but lasts only a few minutes. Sorry, it’s not on Youtube yet.

Absolutely none of the movies have really told the truth about Cleopatra. She was from

a Greek dynasty, not Egyptian, and was not especially beautiful.

Indeed, the coins minted in her reign show her with a hooked nose and with her hair in a bun tied at the back. Although the universal movie tradition is that she poisoned herself with an asp, this tradition really comes from Shakespeare.

Several of the ancient sources would disagree she died from an asp’s bite. Indeed, she might even have been murdered.

The most famous movie is undoubtedly the 1963 version, directed by Joseph Mankiewitz and starring Elizabeth Taylor and Robert Taylor, which was disastrous in more senses

than one. The movie was the biggest grosser at the box office in 1963 yet lost millions of dollars. As Lew Grade said of Raise the Titanic, another flop in a different genre, “it would have been cheaper to lower the Atlantic”. The Elizabeth Taylor movie just goes on and on, for over four hours, and frankly bores the pants off nearly everybody.

Arguably, the best Hollywood portrayal is the 1953 Cleopatra starring Rhonda Fleming and titled Serpent of the Nile. Rhonda, who was born in 1923, is still going strong today after appearing in over 40 major movies and was nicknamed long ago The Queen of Technicolor after her bombshell appearances at the time. She once put down living a long time to being a Presbyterian, so there you have one theory of longevity.

R h o n d a’s Cleopatra is perhaps “the best” for a number of reasons. The

movie is mercifully short at around an hour and a quarter so the action has to be swift moving. No chance to get really bored. Although the queen is shown as beautiful, which is untrue historically, she also has a nasty side which the real Egyptian pharaoh undoubtedly shared. For example, in the film she has her ambitious sister Arsinoe murdered in the desert, the only Hollywood movie even to mention the incident, and she is interested in adultery even while claiming to be the darling of Marc Antony. All this is power politics typical of the age, even though missing from the mainstream Hollywood tradition.

That said, there are several silly features as in all the Cleopatra films. The sets are tacky and largely left over from Salome starring Rita Hayworth.

Several of the backcloths are zany including a scene of galleys paddling their oars in waters which are totally still. The siege of Cleopatra’s palace at the end of the movie is just plain daft with a single battering ram ending centuries of rule by several dynasties.

Many of the costumes, both Roman and Egyptian, are more reminiscent of Halloween than of ancient history.

The main characters make you smile even though they are not supposed to. Rhonda Fleming herself favours dresses which are remarkably similar to the bullet proof gowns for women, popular in America in the 1950s. The main lover, Raymond Burr as Marc Anthony, is never quite convincing as the adoring suitor perhaps as he was silently wrestling with being gay in his private life at the time. He also mispronounces names as when he refers to Cassius as “Cashius” and Cleopatra’s sister Arsinoe as “Our Snowy”.

William Lundigan, as Lucilius and aide to Marc Anthony, described this as the worst film he had ever made.

Probably this is an exaggeration as he never made a decent one.

Lundigan ended up quitting the movies and becoming a first class auto salesman which was a wise career move. Incidentally, Michael Ansara who plays Cleopatra’s captain of the guard, is still around in Hollywood

having been born in 1922. He was to become best known for his portrayal of Cochise in the TV series Broken Arrow.

Serpent of the Nile, compared with the other Hollywood offerings, is the best of the bunch precisely because it’s short, keeps to the point and contains a great deal of humour, howbeit unintended to a substantial degree. Regrettably, it has not been released on DVD but there are still a few copies of the VHS tape around. Both sellers at Amazon and at e-bay have copies available between US$ 10 and 20.

Points to Ponder The Thinking Man’s Column

Hell on Earth Female migrant domestic workers, alias housemaids or ‘domestic servants’ as they are labelled in some parts of Asia, can be found in their millions throughout the Middle East and South Asia. Both Singapore and Hong Kong have a tendency to prefer Filipinas while the Middle East region prefers Indonesians, Indians, Sri Lankans, Bangladeshis and Filipinas.

However, Singapore and Hong Kong are by far a safer bet for housemaids compared to the Middle East. Innocent young girls are pushed and cajoled into leaving home to earn money for their families.

They are lured by the promise of salaries which they very often don’t even receive and then they find themselves caught up in a primitive, cruel and debauched world of misery where the treatment and torture they suffer at the hands of some employers is unbelievably medieval – or should that read medievil? Most have their passports taken from them so they cannot escape from the life of Hell that some of them are subjected to.

Many years ago in Kuwait, I personally saw a young Sri Lankan housemaid with cigarette burns on her arms and legs which where put there by her female Iraqi employer. Housemaid abuse is rife in the Middle East and no young female should ever have to go there alone, because no matter how desperate for money she is, she might never see home again.

Saudi Arabia is one of the worst countries in the Middle East for mental, physical and sexual abuse of housemaids.

Indonesian housemaids are popular with Arabs because most Indonesians are Muslim, but even this didn’t prevent a poor Indonesian housemaid from being killed in Saudi recently. The Indonesian labour minister said that her neck had been slashed and she had received severe cuts to the rest of her body. The Indonesian president’s words were “beyond inhumane”. Later, an Indonesian official said he had been told that the employers had been arrested, but where’s the proof?

Shortly before this news broke, another A picture of innocence badly beaten and wounded Indonesian Photos courtesy Glow Images) housemaid was found dumped in the street.

In the resulting court case in Riyadh, a judge awarded damages of only US$670 to the housemaid and sentenced the female employer who admitted the abuse to 35 lashes. It was a farce.

The decision was overturned, all charges against the female employer dropped and the badly beaten and tortured housemaid charged with making false allegations.

In another Saudi case, a young Sri Lankan girl has been sentenced to death for murdering a 4 month old baby she was caring for, but it seems she was under-age when the alleged crime was committed.

There were translation problems in court and human rights group, Amnesty International, say she had no lawyer before or during her trial. The baby choked during a feeding session and the young girl could not save him. Where were the parents? Why was an under age girl working abroad as a housemaid and why was she in charge of looking after a baby, when she was a minor herself? Indeed, how could she even enter the country and obtain a visa if she was under age?

These are only three recent cases that have come to light. How many more dreadful, sordid and dark secrets does this country have that we will never know about?

In Dubai it is no different. A colleague and his Filipina wife operated a ‘safe house’ where abused housemaids could stay until their emergency evacuation papers were ready.

I recall meeting an Indonesian housemaid in Dubai who had (foolishly) married an Emirati who had claimed to be a policeman. He wasn’t, but she was treated much worse than any prisoner could ever have been. She is only one of many who become involved in situations like this throughout the Gulf region.

Saudi Arabia and the Middle Eastern region have the oil that the rest of the world wants and needs. But is that any reason to turn a blind eye to the way housemaids are used and abused on a daily basis? Questions need to be asked – and answered – about the torturous, primitive treatment of housemaids in the Middle East and particularly in Saudi Arabia.

Everyone is quick enough to complain about the lack of human rights in China, so why doesn’t Saudi Arabia receive the same international condemnation on a daily basis?

An Aladdin’s cave of notorious courtesans 500 years of mischief with “the other woman”

lizabeth Abbott’s “Mistresses: A History of Other Women” spans 500 plus years and discusses some of the famous courtesans to fill the scandal ridden pages of modern history. It is not quite clear why it was published at Christmas and New Year, the season of good will.

Maybe that’s the time of year when wives most suspect their husband is having an affair and decide to hire a private investigator to find out.

Anyway, the author tells us that she first became aware of mistresses as a child as her great grandfather had apparently had a series of fancy women which greatly upset the family at the time and ever since. However, we learn that the great grandmother handled the situation shrewdly by agreeing that her husband could give the other woman a diamond ring provided that he bought her one too.

The scope of the book is very wide, covering ancient history, imperial China, the Old Testament, modern European history, nazi Germany and revolutionary Cuba.

Adultery, we conclude, is fairly widespread and always has been.

We learn that Malinche, the mistress and counselor of Hernan

Cortes was so crucial to his conquest of the Aztec empire that “natives stopped distinguishing between the two and considered them an indivisible unit”.

In 1930s Berlin, the SS security service allowed a brothel Madam Kitty’s to flourish, but the short time

rooms were fitted out with hidden microphones. In this way, a number of high ranking Germans were caught in the act of adultery and soon afterwards received a visit from an underling of Heinrich Himmler, or even worse a suicide capsule sent through the post with a suggestion to swallow it soon.

Considering what a degenerate lot the hierarchy of the Third Reich were, it was cheeky indeed to spy on generals and politicians in this way.

We learn in the book why some courtesans were so ravishing. Nell Gwynn had an “uptilted nose, lustrous chestnut hair, hazel eyes and firm and full breasts.”

No wonder then that Charles II couldn’t wait to get back to the palace after yet another boring meeting with Parliament. Roxelana, the fancy woman of the sixteenth century sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, maintained her influence by more than good looks: she managed to murder most of her rivals and poisoned most of the sultan’s relatives as well.

Camilla Parker Bowles is doubtless the most notorious mistress of recent British history. According

to the book, she and prince Charles first met on a muddy polo field in the pouring rain when the latter introduced himself as the heir to the throne. Their sexual relationships continued through failed marriages on both sides and public outcry over the affair, especially in the late 1990s after Diana’s fatal accident in the French tunnel.

In a highly unusual move for a mistress, Mrs Parker Bowles became the prince’s wife in 2005.

There’s even a possibility that she might become a queen one day, or something akin to the top female position. She has been luckier than most courtesans in British history who have typically been discarded after a time and left to wallow in self-pity, drugs and booze.

The book as a whole claims to assess courtesans from the female perspective, but actually it’s the tidbits and gossip which carry the reader along. Elizabeth Abbott has already written of sexual themes, including celibacy and marriage.

Perhaps her next tome could be on gay courtesans. After all, the emperor Hadrian owed it all to his lover Antoninus and Richard the Lionheart was scolded by the archbishop of Canterbury for his addiction to young men. Almost cost him his throne.

Green Valley – Monthly Medal – White Tees My how time flies, and another monthly medal showdown was on the cards at Green Valley. A good field of 24 of Pattaya’s finest were up for the test and some good scores made for a close contest.

The course was in perfect shape save for a few spots of the wet. It is pretty much back to its best condition and ready for the high season now. Let’s start off with our caddy smile near pin which was won by visiting Englishman Jason Luczyniec. Jayski plays off a five handicap with a deadly short game, so no surprises there.

Nice to see our mates from the Siam members out with us and me ol’ mate Mr. Mulberry back in form for third spot. Bob Newell had to share a podium with JP Thomas, but she doesn’t need too much room. Poor

Per picks up low gross plus

A great turnout of 132 players, including 19 ladies, made the journey this month to the Phoenix course, where we played the Lakes and Ocean combination for the tournament sponsored by The New Nordic Group. The weather was perfect for golf, there was a steady breeze to keep it interesting, with the groups progressing at a steady pace, after a couple of tardy players early. We played from the white tee markers today and while some were forward, there were others playing their full length. The course was the same challenge for all and good scores were not easy to make, save for a few golfers who save their best for the PAGS. The past few months has seen outstanding performances for the tournament Low Gross, and while Per Werngren (10)

was a little off those scores, his 78 was the best of this day, while also picking up the technical prize on Ocean 3. His score also got him 2nd place on countback in the A Flight (0 – 14) after there were several players grouped on 40 points.

Anders Norberg (14) led the way with his 22 point back 9 and 15 last 6 holes to relegate Per, who had 13 on the last 6, while Ian Parry (13) picked up 3rd with a back 9 of 21, to edge the other contenders, Wanlop, John and Montri.

The B flight, for handicaps 15 - 20, was tightly contested, with all placegetters each separated by a solitary point.

Mikael Andersson (19) with an equal day’s best score of 42 points led the field home, with Chris Davisson (19) 1 back with 41, while Neil Fidele (19) shot a creditable 40 for the bronze position.

The C flight required a countback to settle the winner, with Robert Baird (29) edging out Peo Lindmark (29) 24/20 on the back 9, after both players recorded a solid 41 points. Birger Karlson (29) was alone in recording 39 points to pick up the last spot on the podium.

The ladies clear winner on 42 points was Nongnuch Jantamaneenkul (14) to go with her Long Drive on Ocean 8 and the approach on Ocean 1, while Bunsong Brown (28) was a strong 2nd with a fine 41 points.

Honorable mentions for two time technical winners go out to Jerry Sweetham, both Long Drives in the 65+ Division, Wanlop for his 2 Approaches, Wilawan May for a long putt and an approach and Jeff Wylie for an approach and long drive.

Parichat Parichat was the venue for the last round of the month and as it's not a course to everyone's liking numbers were lower than expected with some choosing to play elsewhere. This is a difficult course at the best of times but when the wind blows as it did today then the challenge is even greater. The course itself was in excellent condition as usual but the strength and direction of the wind which seemed to predominantly blow across or in our faces made for a difficult day for all.

Newly returned Neil Griffin was the man of the moment taking the honors with a modest thirty points. Second went to Ken Davidson with 29 points beating Keith Norman on countback. Near pins went two to Ken and one each to Neil and Michael.

As it was the last game of the month the prize for the golfer of the month was on the line. Neil Carter needed to win to take the honors but with six wipes on his card it was a step too far and the winner was Michael Brett with three points to spare. As we now see an influx of regulars from the Northern Hemisphere it's going to be interesting to see who takes the trophy next month.

A big influx of visitors saw our numbers swell to 18 so competition for prizes was keen. How appropriate that on his birthday (number not disclosed) that Dave Gow on his debut this tour should take out first place with an excellent score of 40. Second went to Neil Carter who may have thought that he was the winner with an excellent 39.

PJ Redmond in a rare appearance took third with 37, and Ken Davidson enjoying good early form on this tour took the final place with 35 points. Near pins went to Colin Greig as usual, Stuart Tinkler, Gerry Cooney, and PJ. Shot of the day went to Michael Brett who despite having a miserable day managed to eagle the parr four C 5 hole with a seven iron second shot straight in the hole. Last week we enjoyed lower green fees and had lower numbers of players, this week the fees returned to high season rates and our numbers jumped significantly. Today we had 36 players for our trip to Pattavia. The weather was beautiful, the course was in excellent condition and we were set for a great day’s golf, a big change from our last visit when play was abandoned after nine holes.

The standard of play was excellent with some great scores recorded on this difficult course. To add to the difficulty the greens are now returning to the speed we are used to at this course, but today it didn't matter to most.

Trevor Priestly as he so often does put in a very good score and was the overall winner with 41 points. Ken Davidson in B flight took second place with 38 points and is clearly enjoying a generous handicap of 25, a cut may soon be in order. John Hughes beat Les Hall on countback for third with 36 points. In the A flight Neil Carter continues to enjoy very good form and took the honors with 44. Jimmy Carr was a shot back on 39 and Stuart Tinkle who is a different man from his last visit took third with 38.

We played B and C Nines in that order (B nine was used for Long Putt: the count-backs). The course was in real good B9 - Tony Cook. nick greens slick on the front 9, going from the A9 - Darren Slade yellow tees but struggled against some power Back at the bar we welcomed Nam and hitters from the yellow tees.

The 8th annual Poppy golf tournament

This tournament comes around every year about this time and every Year it seems to come around quicker. The golf was held on Friday, November 3 at Khao Kheow Country Club and the presentation night this year was at The Holiday Inn on November 4. Let me say here and now that at both Khao Kheow and The Holiday Inn we were looked after very well and my thanks go out to both Organisations. Both Organisations entered into the spirit of the competition and made this competition into one of the best of the year.

The morning at Khao Kheow started very early for the organisers and Nigel Cannon was there at the crack of dawn to ensure all was ready for the eager golfers. Mick O’Connor was not far behind and Andy Barraclough arrived early as he had volunteered to be a starter.

All these gentlemen were there all day and my thanks go to them in particular for the success of this day, as well as the help from Nin, Manager Khao Kheow, and their staff. Khao Kheow have been with me every inch of the way in the past 8 years.

The Competition is a ‘two ball better ball stableford’, where you play with a partner and the best stableford score is included on the card at each hole.

Whilst relatively simple it is a competition that is not played often and needs some awareness amongst the competitors, ‘Enough said’. The good thing about this type of competition is that you stand to score quite often by the skill of your partner and it is important to forge a good friendship.

Bright and breezy Nigel and Mick were at the desk and the players started to flow through.

At the start of each Nine were Andy and a ‘Volunteer’ from Khao Kheow to ensure the players were away on time and everything went very smoothly, and 26 Groups of four got away on time. Thanks to the ‘officials’.

The day was bright and breezy from first light and the only real fear of the ‘organiser’, that we have thunderstorms and pouring rain was discarded very early on. Heavy rain and storms negate the competition and thus all the shirts, Saturday night at the Holiday Inn and sponsorship become a problem.

Indeed three years ago we had such a storm but someone was looking after me and we managed to play at Khao Kheow when all other courses were rained off. However one of the Royal British Legion Members volunteered to do a ‘rainless war dance’ and it seemed to work.

As said the day was bright and breezy and it was one of

those days when you feel you are playing ‘millionaire’s golf’. The day seemed to go quite quickly and we played the A & B Nines.

There was a strong wind all day but it only cooled you down.

The fairways were firm so you got the ball running, especially with the wind behind, while it was noticeable the players still had difficulty getting the ball out of the rough. The rough here is a bit special and get in it you must normally take your punishment.

The greens in particular deserve praise as they were firm, fast and true. It was also noticed that the holes on the green were in the most difficult position because it was necessary to make the course difficult with two players counting and playing off the white tees. We had a tough but great day on the course and finished believing this was a great course and it was in fine

Greenwood - St The Tropical golfers headed for Greenwood for the final round of the month as we have over the past year plus. This time however, the format for the day changed from a medal round for the monthly mug and the final counting round for “golfer of the month” points, to a regular “stableford” competition.

With Daryl Evans winning the mug last week, the focus this day was to play well, win or place in your flight, and see who would win the points battle for GOM! With the weather looking fantastic and even a little cooler, 17 players left BJ’s after breakfast and coffee for the drive to Greenwood. The drive has become much quicker with the new Laem Chabang Port – 331 connector highway nearly 100 percent complete.

With clear skies above all were anxious to get on the course and have a round without slogging over rain drenched fairways. We were not to be disappointed as the course was in excellent condition with the greens running at a report speed of 10 and the fairways fairly firm and shots getting some roll after hitting the ground, something that condition.

While the players finished and went home, the scribe and his team battled on to collect the cards, give the players a fine shirt and a ticket for the presentation night on the Saturday at The Holiday Inn. Happy days.

On the Saturday night the players, and many ‘significant others’ gathered at the Executive Tower, Floor Four called the Workshop or as we would say The Ballroom. The afternoon had been spent running around to ensure the night went smoothly and Gypsy of Holiday Inn met us and took our prizes to the 4th floor to be delivered at the start of the night, Thanks Gypsy.

The players and guests started to arrive early and as the night went on all the tables were taken and guests were filling plates up with the fine food. Holiday Inn did us proud and the food was of the highest quality. The organisers waited

has been missing for quite some time with all the rain we have experienced. So with a well presented course, great weather, albeit a bit breezy, and a reasonable green fee rate, how would the field perform on the “A” & “B” nines?

With a reasonable pace of play, the six groups all finished in good order and, with all cards in and tabulated, all were headed back to BJ’s for a late lunch and the presentation.

While one golfer managed to beat his handicap, the scores were generally lower than usual here, most likely due to the quicker greens and the wind to deal with.

A-Flight (0-23): Congratulations to Nigel Perry (c/h 23) for turning in the round of the day at 38 points to win the flight. John Davis (15) followed with a fine 36 points in his quest to get to the top of the GOM

point table. In 3rd place, Mashi Kaneta (16) edged out Andre Van Dyk on countback, both scoring 35 points.

B-Flight (24+): Graham “Buckers” Buckingham (26) took the “B-flight” with a fine 35 points. Mick Coghlan (24), the leader in the GOM race at the start of the day, was second with 32 points, followed by Daryl Evans (25) nipping Don Carmody (33), both with 30 points for third place.

The organiser thanked all for attending and thanked all the sponsors and those who helped to organise. Mainly, Macallan Insurance Brokers Ltd, Lucy Electric, Pattaya Reality, Manpower Group and Phil Smeed. Also thanked was Pattaya Mail, Holiday Inn, Khao Kheow, Pattaya Sports Club and his supporters from Tropicals Golf Society mainly Tom Cotton, Daryl Evans and Dick Warberg. He also thanked Graham Macdonald who had supported him for eight years and of course Nigel.

He then called on Andy Barraclough, chairman of the Royal British Legion Thailand, to give a short talk about the good the income will do and the fact that every baht will go to the correct place as there is no deduction.

Then the organisers presented Royal British Legion medals to three people who had supported him over the last eight years. Dave Richardson, military to the soul, Jim Elphick who at Lewinsky's always provided Golfers and Chris Balzis who always provided shirts at a good quality and price. Thanks to all.

So into the results and the scores this year were quite realistic. The winners with 48 points were Phil Davies and Mark Fraught on countback

over in second place with also 48 points Wayne Bridgeman and Tony Odonaga. In third place were Mike Allidi and Patrick Poussier. We then had a five-way countback on 46 points that saw in fourth place were John Anderson and Tony Brown on countback. In fifth place Paul Hack and Dick Bainbridge on countback. In sixth place was P Nixon and D Atkinson on countback over two more teams missing out were Andy Makara, Keith Allen and Andreas Wegener, Werner Schwarz.

Now to the best sportsmen and the strongest golfers as not only did they have to hold the rest up but came last. The honour, as per last year, went to Jack Levy and John Kennedy who were given a prize to suit their ability.

The night then continued as our Octogenarian and his ladies proceeded with the lucky draw. Still full of vim and vigor is our Nigel and I thank him for being up so late. This part went particularly well and I thank all for their participation.

As most of the night was over, I decided to go and have my first beer and sit with Nigel and his ladies to relax and looking around saw the rich and powerfull all departing for other fields. Then suddenly I was on my own, except for the singer and the waiters, so could relax with a job well done. T.T.F.N.

For Dog Lovers Only Do you share your home with a dog? If not, you can’t imagine what living with one might be like. But once you get a dog, you’ll be unable to imagine living without one. He is certain to become your baby, your playmate, your best friend, your inspiration for laughter, happiness and love.

Before rushing out to spend good money at a pet shop or other retail outlet, consider visiting one of several dog shelters, rescue groups and pet hospitals in and around Pattaya. They have hundreds of wonderful dogs longing to be adopted—ranging from mixed breeds to pure breeds, from lap dogs to guard dogs.

Even if you know exactly what your future companion looks like, keep your mind and your heart open to that

special unexpected connection you might stumble upon at a pound, and be guided by your lifestyle.

If you live in a small condo or apartment, for instance, resist the soulful eyes of a larger breed, such as a German Sheppard or golden retriever. If you have a house and yard, almost any breed will work, and if you’re a jogger or have children, an active, playful sort of pooch might be ideal. Keep in mind that exercise requirements and personalities vary from breed to breed and in individual animals.

Which dogs have the qualities that are important to you? Research the internet for information, evaluate the animals you see at shelters, and speak to shelter workers and others for insight. Size, temperament and even some health issues may be predictable in purebred dogs—and even in some mixed breeds if you can determine their types. Too, a mixed breed may be more hardy and less prone to genetic defects.

Do visit a dog shelter if only to become familiar with a spectrum of choices available for adoption. From hyper pups—which will require more training and supervision—to serene, mature dogs that don’t require housetraining, exercise and inordinate care.

Other qualities to consider if you have children include how a friendly dog is. Does he like to be touched? Is he sensitive to handling and noise? Is he too fragile to be handled by children?

While you're at the shelter, recognize that those dogs may be stressed out and not acting like their true selves among other animals in that environment. So even if you walk past a dog who isn't vying for your attention, don't count him out. He may just be a little scared and quite lonely. You may well be good for each other in that context.

And remember, you’ll be choosing a new best friend for life. Choose carefully.

This lovely mum and son combination were rescued from our local temple. Celia had 3 kittens 2 of which have already been re-homed, leaving just this little black and white rascal Wilson. This "Purrfect pair" would love to go to a new home together if possible.

This friendly handsome boy has been with us for a few years now, he just loves playing in the garden and is a good cat for catching vermin.

This lovely kitten was born here just 6 weeks ago: we found her mum at our local temple. She was heavily pregnant. Just a few days later she gave birth to 5 beautiful babies. This one is called Moley and has many lovely colours.

Too Much Love

This next lovely kitten is an unusual ginger girl as most ginger cats are boys. Just like her sister above, she is lively, friendly and very naughty as most kittens are. It would be nice to re-home her with one of her brothers and sisters.

Behavior experts confirm that some cats experience separation anxiety when apart from a favorite person -- and that's one reason a sweet kitty may pee on your clothes when you're away from home. Other signs: the cat paces, vocalizes, or blocks the owner's path to the door. Left alone, she may vomit or be too worried to eat.

For cats who love too much, behavior therapy can help -- along with anti-anxiety medications for severely affected cats.

Mothers teach their young many things we are not aware of, such as proper behavior in specific situations, how to eat things correctly, how to use the litter box, and how to act with other cats. If these needs are ignored, it's like kicking your children out of your home before they even get to kindergarten. They'd probably find their way, but they might not become good citizens.

To help ensure a well-adjusted cat, allow three to four months of nursing.

In any event, do not separate kittens from their mothers at four, five or six weeks of age!
