British pensioner fraudsters!

The UK government is apparently making a new year’s resolution to crack down on those British pensioners overseas who are apparently claiming annual increases in the state pension to which they are not entitled. There are 550,000 recipients of the state pension who live overseas, or about four percent of the total claimants living in the UK. The majority of those expats have their state pension frozen from the time they first take it and, moreover, they are not entitled to the winter fuel allowance. Those penalized for the rest of their lives (unless they resume residence in UK) include those living in most Commonwealth countries as well as the majority of other states including Thailand and all Asian countries except the Philippines.. However, those British expats living in EU

countries, the United States, Israel and one or two more do receive the annual increase based roughly on the UK rate of inflation. A small minority of those living in the “frozen” countries, including Thailand and Cambodia, attempt to conceal their expat status, normally by using a friend’s or relative’s address as a post-restante in the UK. By pretending to live in the UK, they continue to receive the annual increase as well as the winter fuel allowance which averages about 200 pounds per year. Research by Pattaya Today has revealed there are several ways in which defrauding expats can be exposed to the UK authorities. Frequent use of credit and debit cards overseas can lead to questions by t h e U K a u t h o r i t i e s , especially as traditional

banking secrecy laws are in stark decline. Another possible source of exposure is when an application is made for a new British passport as every page of the expiring document has to be copied, sometimes revealing long-term visas which might be incompatible with UK residency. We spoke to Stan, a Pattaya resident of many years, who was recently fined heavily by UK authorities after his mother died in UK and his use of her address as a post-restante was brought to official attention. He has also been charged with filling in his income tax return with criminal intent which could see him further penalized. “It looks like my income from UK will be cut by over a half for several years because of the accumulated fines,” he said. No official figures are published about fraudulent

claimants worldwide, but experts say it is unlikely to be more than five percent of the total. Critics of the whole system whereby some overseas pensioners are penalized, even though they have paid taxes all their working lives, say that the government should abolish the anomaly and abolish the whole notion of freezing pensions. But Britain’s Department of Work and Pensions replies that it would be too expensive fully to index-link all overseas state pensions at a cost of 590 million pounds annually. A spokesman added that those living in countries not frozen are simply fortunate as they benefit from mutual pacts and bi-lateral agreements made many years ago. Y e t t h e g ov e r n m e n t has given way on another contentious issue regarding the state pension. It was announced recently that British pensioners living in EU countries, after Britain formally withdraws from membership in 2019, will

British pensioner fraudsters! British pensioners living in EU countries, after Britain formally withdraws from membership in 2019, will continue to receive index-linked pensions. The whole system is ripe for comprehensive review, yet insiders doubt there is the political will to address the global issue. Expat pensioners are simply unimportant and mostly do not (or are not allowed) to vote in UK elections. The full state pension of just under 160 pounds a week is available to qualified pensioners who have at least 35 years of qualifying national insurance payments. It is said to be one of the lowest rates in the whole of the EU.

Baht bus drivers assault Korean

In the wee hours of the morning, a Norwegian expat was beaten by bar employees when he asked the staff to reduce the volume of music that was blasting the neighborhood. Police were called to the man’s Jomtien home where they found the victim with a head gash. Bar employees denied the allegations, but the manager was taken in for questioning.

Pattaya police arrested two baht bus drivers in their homes, accusing the pair of having assaulted a Korean tourist. The South Korean, Hyon Soon Bae, complained to police that he was seated near the exit of a songtaew and was told by the driver, Kosan Mekai, to move to the front of the vehicle. When Bae refused to move, Kosan and another songtaew driver, Prasith Butdee, attacked the passenger. Both drivers were charged with physical assault.

EQUINE-ASSISTED THERAPY ABLE THE DISABLED FOUNDATION, HORSESHOE POINT PATTAYA Volunteers needed Able the Disabled Foundation (ADF) Thailand is a foundation that provides therapy riding for special needs children. A horse’s movement is therapeutic and improves the child’s balance, coordination, behavior and muscle tone, along with confidence and self-esteem. The warmth of the horse’s body and rhythmic gait relaxes spastic muscles and stimulates muscular development. The horse’s movement naturally in walk simulates the movement of the human walk. ADF Thailand relies heavily on volunteers for its operation, and community support for its funding. There is a constant need for motivated, cheerful and reliable people to help. It is not necessary to know anything about horses, or disabled children, to make a big difference in the lives of these riders. ADF teaches its volunteers what they need to know in order to walk alongside a rider or lead a pony. The classes are held at Horseshoe Point on Tuesday and Thursday mornings between 10 am to 12 pm. Private lessons are available afternoons from 2 to 6 pm weekdays and weekends. If you wish to know more about volunteering, contact Sandra Cooper on 086 848 3684. News American visitors to Organic Tourism campaign set Thailand hit 1 million for expansion across Thailand for the first time and Mekong countries

The number of Americans visiting Thailand annually hit the 1-million mark, setting a new record for Thailand’s No 1 source market from the Americas Region, where the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) operates two offices in New York and Los Angeles, USA. Nathaniel Alexander Way, Thailand’s 1 millionth American tourist for 2017, is a pharmaceutical scientist from Santa Babara, California. He arrived in Bangkok this late morning on EVA Air’s Flight BR67 from Taipei, Taiwan. He travelled here on a 10-day honeymoon, with an itinerary focussing on nature and Thai local experiences in Bangkok, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Krabi (Ao Nang) and Surat Thani (Khao Sok). T a n e s P e t s u w a n , TAT deputy governor for Marketing Communications, said, “ This latest Thai tourism news is beyond reporting statistical numbers, but is a reflection of TAT’s commitment and ongoing tireless effort to lift the ‘Amazing Thailand’ brand awareness in the USA market.

Americans, especially honeymooners and luxur y travellers. Among the activities have included the sponsorships for the filming of TV series, reality programmes and food shows in Thailand, including The Bachelor in 2013 and The Bachelorette in 2011. Another highlighted effort is a partnership with Virtuoso promoting the Kingdom as a honeymoon destination. For 2018, TAT will continue its effort to spotlight Thailand as a honeymoon and luxury travel destination for American travellers, promoting luxury products, culture, beaches, Thai cuisine, soft adventures, local experience tours, Muay Thai lessons, and health and wellness trips, under the TAT’s latest ‘Open to the New Shades’ communication concept. As well as existing popular destinations of Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi and Ko Samui, new destinations to be promoted to American travellers are Sukhothai in the North; Ko Chang and Ko Kut in the East; Ko Lanta, Ko Yao Yai and Yao Noi, Ko Phangan,

“The USA has been among Thailand’s most important markets since the Kingdom began its tourism promotion. The welcoming of the 1 millionth American tourist for 2017, the first time ever for Thailand, marks a step forward for the Thai tourism industry in expanding the Americas market and in addition, the offering of endless Thai local experiences.” The TAT New York and Los Angeles Offices have been proactive in enhancing the awareness of Thailand as a ‘preferred destination’ for the

Chumphon and Ranong in the South, and ASEAN Connectivity trips linking the Northeast or Isan with Lao PDR. with Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani and Nong Khai as the border gateways. TAT is hosting the 2018 USTOA Out of Country Meeting in Thailand from March 18 to 27, in Bangkok, Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai. In addition, it is stepping up cooperation with the strategic airline partner – EVA Air – to introduce several tourism offers to the Americas market.

A campaign to promote Organic Tourism across Thailand and the Greater Mekong Subregion has taken a major step forward with the convening of the first multi-sectoral workshop designed to brainstorm ideas and forge new partnerships to advance the cause. The campaign is aimed at motivating hotels, restaurants, catering companies, supermarkets and other food outlets to wean farmers away from unhealthy and environmentally destructive pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. After taking root in Thailand, it is slated for expansion across Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Guangxi and Yunnan provinces of Southern China. Over 40 participants including hoteliers, tour operators, academics, environmentalists, NGO and media representatives attended the workshop organised by Sampran Riverside and the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office (MTCO), backed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Sustainable Food Lab Thailand, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Destination Mekong. Held at the The Athenee Hotel Bangkok, the workshop was also designed as a brainstorming session for the first Mekong Trends Symposium on Organic Tourism to be held in Bangkok alongside the 4th UNWTO World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism between May 30 to June 1, 2018. In his opening presentation, TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said Organic Tourism fitted in perfectly with the TAT's marketing campaign to promote Gastronomy Tourism. It is also in accordance with His Majesty the late King Bhumibhol's "Sufficiency Economy" philosophy and the 17-point global agenda known as the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He noted that the Royal Thai Government is also promoting stronger linkages between its two bedrock economic pillars, agriculture and tourism, as part of its national 2017 to 2012 development strategy known as Thailand 4.0. Jens Thraenhart, executive director, MTCO, said, "We are

excited to introduce the Organic Tourism concept to the Mekong Subregion with Thailand as the lead country. Strong tourist growth is coupled with a shift of consumers looking for clean and healthy food. Thus, the industry has to adopt and prepare for sustainable living practices. Aligned to the GMS Tourism Sector Strategy 2016 to 2025, Organic Tourism can be an important social movement in that regard, combining the two most important economic sectors in the region." Arrut Navaraj, managing director, Sampran Riverside, said, "Organic Tourism is a social movement based on an inclusive business model and Sufficiency Economy Philosophy. Led by the private sector, the movement aims to build a more sustainable food system. It strives to empower everyone in the organic value chain to become collective leaders for change. Organic Tourism is far more than just tourists visiting organic farms. It involves hotels, restaurants, and supermarkets, buying organic produce from local farmers and communicating to their customers its importance and benefits. Farm visits can be considered as additional activities to help guests better understand the farming experience."

Georginia Nepomuceno, regional cooperation specialist under the ADBadministered GMS Core Agriculture Support Program (CASP) said, "Organic Tourism could be a powerful tool for sustainable development -improving farmer livelihoods, people's health and the environment." She said the plan to expand the Organic Tourism agenda was formed at the sidelines of the Second GMS Agriculture Ministers' Meeting (AMM-2) in September 2017 in Siem Reap. Both the MTCO and Sampran Riverside were speakers at the AMM2 policy forum. "The AMM-2 endorsed the Strategy for Promoting Safe and Environment-Friendly Agro-based Value Chains in the GMS and Siem Reap Action Plan 2018 to 2022. It aims to strengthen commitment to food security and safety, increase market access for small producers, and promote cross-sectoral collaboration between agriculture, tourism, environment, health, among others." Over the next few months, a number of activities will be rolled out, starting with the 1st Organic Tourism Social Lab between January 18 to 20 2018 followed by a second one in February 2018. The campaign will also be publicised at various travel trade

Arrut said the movement in Thailand is being coordinated by Sustainable Food Lab (Thailand), a social enterprise which assumes the role as backbone organisation. Funding support is being extended by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, the Sookjai Foundation and the TAT. The intention is to extend the movement to other countries in the Greater Mekong Subregion.

events such as the Mekong Tourism Forum in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand on June 27 to 29 and ITB Asia in October 2018. The MTCO plans to publish a Mekong Trends Snapshot Report on Organic Tourism, with key insights from the meetings, as well as case studies. It is projected for release at the UNWTO World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism.

Biennial Bon Odori Festival in Bangkok marks 130 years of Thai-Japanese relations The Biennial Bon Odori Festival this year marked 130 years of Thai-Japanese diplomatic relations, and joined in the celebrations under the action-packed Amazing Thailand Tourism Year 2018 with two impressive rounds of famous Japanese traditional dance circle, held at Bangkok’s Thep Hatsadin Stadium. The Bon Odori Festival in Bangkok was first organised by the Japanese Association in Thailand in 1987, and has since been held in December every other year with the objective of offering the opportunity for the Japanese people residing and holidaying in Thailand, as well as the Thai people, to enjoy a traditional Japanese celebration. Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), said, “TAT is proud to have been a part in helping to build on over a century strong and longstanding relationship between Thailand and Japan, and showcase a portion of Thai culture that shares the similar sense of spiritual fun and upbeat while helping to preserve

the traditions and cultures of both nations.” The ‘Odori’ dance is one of Japan’s age-old folk arts, with dancers wearing varied kimonos or yukatas and dancing to the rhythm of the traditional Taiko drumming performances. Reflecting this, TAT arranged two folk dance shows from

the Kalasin College of Dramatic Arts, with dancers wearing brightly coloured costumes, and dancing in swift, harmonious movements to the beat of folk songs associated with the Northeast region, or Isan. During the 2017 Bon Odori Festival in Bangkok, there were two rounds of impressive Japanese

Mick & Di The Food Lovers

thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com

A Look Back in 2017 @ Wine, Whisky & Sake Dinners… Reviewing restaurants is a tricky business, and it raises many issues. One of the questions we are constantly asked is why we don’t ever read a bad review. Well, a) we endeavour not to review bad restaurants! They are either recommended or we have eaten there ourselves, b) we want to promote and help the restaurants not damage its reputation and c) it is what we don’t say that speaks volumes and our more insightful readers detect this. Also, sometimes a memorable meal is more than just the food. Ambiance, the occasion and the company all contribute to happy memories. With all that in mind, here are some memorable bites from 2017. Wine dinners are gastro-staples in Pattaya giving the Chefs full reign for their gastronomic imagination combined with the perfect pairing of wines. However, during 2017 Mick and I have been hosted to some amazing dinners where in some cases, wine was eschewed for whisky and sake making for some surprising conclusions. Dicey Reilly’s pushed the envelope and conjured a tasting of the iconic and much loved Belvenie whisky married to a trio of courses to complement the spirit. Firstly though, a small tulip shaped glass “known as a nosing glass” arrived on the table. It traps the aromas in the bulbous bottom of the glass for perfect detection and pinpointing. The first course introduced roasted New Zealand mussels baked in parchment with herbs in a white butter sauce and the chosen whisky a “DoubleWood” 12-year-old single malt. Who knew roasted mussels and whisky would make such good friends? Not “any” whisky of course but this pedigree which has been matured in two wood types; a traditional oak cask and an European oak sherry cask, each stage affording its own special qualities to the malt. Smooth and oh, so mellow with a nutty sweetness and that underlying

lying Sherry flavour are now confirmed Balvenie admirers. Pork sous-vide with butter, herbs, carrot puree and tomato relish then hit the table with another wee gram, this time my favourite of the evening, a “Caribbean Cask” 14-year-old. This particular malt had been matured in traditional oak casks for many years and then finished in Caribbean casks that had previously held rum. The result is unbelievable, rich, sweet and creamy with a soft and lingering finish. Eaten with the buttery pork and a quite delicious tomato relish it was alike to a walk in the Highlands with a glass of Balvenie in hand. Lastly the Clan Leader was introduced – a “DoubleWood” 17-year-old single malt. It gains its name from having being matured in two distinct casks: a traditional whisky cask followed by a shorter period in an European Sherry cask. The taste is elegant and complex with shades of vanilla and honey with just a hint of green apples. Grilled lamb tenderloin with prune sauce proved the perfect partner to this aged gentlemen of the glen.

Dicey Reilly’s is located on Second Road, Pattaya next to the Avani Hotel and Royal Garden Plaza complex. Tel: 038 411 755 Open 08.00 am to Midnight.

The famous sake house of Kozaemon hosted a successful event where they presented nine of their most popular varieties while Beni Hana staged a culinary abundance of dishes prepared by their talented young chefs. Japan’s national drink has played a central role in Japanese life and culture for the past 2,000 years. It is sometimes referred to as “rice wine” but the brewing process is more similar to beer converting starch to sugar for the fermentation process. Undiluted sake contains 18 – 20% ABV (although this is often lowered to 15% by adding water prior to bottling). This rich brewing tradition is probably one reason why the Japanese love their sake so much, so where better to hold this unique Sake Tasting event than at Benihana, Pattaya’s favourite teppanyaki steak house. So it was with much anticipation and enthusiasm that Mick and I headed out to the second

Level 34, Hilton Pattaya floor of the Royal Garden Plaza’s life style mall to enjoy this rare occurrence. Our welcome sake was a Junmai Umeshu Beni Nankoubai or plum liquer which provided an elegant almost sweet-sour sensation for a refreshing curtain raiser to the evening. Sesame lavash, a thin crunchy Middle Eastern treat together with nori chips and some wasabi nuts. A glass of the most premium sake, Junmai Daiginjo was then served with the pairing of French oysters, larb tuna tartar and Hamachi jalapenos which with their fusion characteristics made immediate friends. A selection of succulent sushi balls, takoyaki (octopus filled wheat balls) and salmon garnished sushi plus California and Tarmako Maki rolls were disappearing at a rapid rate with the next sake, a fragrant Junmai Ginjo Bizen Omachi. However, the star of this course was sushi frost, soft tender salmon was served on a bed of meringue and then “dry iced” to perfect frostiness. The next offering was another Ginjo #20 Mino-Mizunami

which we sipped and slurped with quite a few delicious chicken Yakitori sticks liberally drenched in the sweet umami sauce. This course also included a delightful osuimono soup a light fishy broth fashioned from dashi, water and sake and floated with a sweet poached prawn. The accompanying sake was a smooth Kirinzan which enhanced and complemented all the various flavours. The finale presented our Master Chef preparing us garlic fried rice and a teppanyaki premier quality beef. Knives (and eggs) were thrown, flipped, juggled, lobbed and pitched with skill resulting in a delicious bowl of rice and a perfectly grilled piece of beef before his wagon was ceremoniously wheeled to another table. Quite a performance and from the appreciative ovations and cheers that emanated from the surrounding areas we were not the only ones enjoying the Benihana magic. We had a “funtastic” evening, the food was top notch, the sakes more than interesting and of course proved the perfect accompaniment to the

Japanese cuisine. Mantra Bar & Restaurant has set the benchmark for global cuisine since its opening over ten years ago. It consistently ranks in the top restaurants of the city and deserves its enviable reputation for serving unswerving quality in an ambiance of contemporary elegance. Chic, stylish and unique it works hard to maintain its position in Pattaya’s gastro circles. Exclusive culinary (and musical) events take place regularly especially wine dinners where the skills of their Executive Chef, and his brigade, make for a memorable evening. The latest culinary event featured

a trio of alcoholic potions paired with a gourmet 8-course dinner. The first pouring of the evening featured a most unusual sparkling Sake, Dassai Junmai Daiginjo Happou Nigpri. A first for most people gathered at the bar as it most certainly was for us. For an exciting aperitif it fitted the bill perfectly and accompanied by Mussel Ceviche and a Wagyu Yakitori it proved an innovative opening and a portent of what was to come. Once seated in the restaurant the first appetiser was served, a Salmon Mi Cuit. Literally meaning “half cooked” it was a gem of a dish. The translucent salmon with its decadent texture had been prepared with a combination of heat and salt to ensure that although served chilled, this delightful fish was anything but raw. Served on a bed of goats’ cheese and leek risotto plus tiny slivers of beetroot gastrique (prepared in a sweet and sour sauce) it was a heavenly dish. Just a little more and alas the bottom of my plate appeared, I could have licked it clean! The wine paring was a New Zealand Marlborough 2016 Matua Sauvignon Blanc. This crisp, fresh young wine, from one of our favourite areas of New Zealand, escorted this first course admirably.

The next pour was a 2016 Rawson’s Retreat Chardonnay from Australia. A very dry wine with a slight oaky finish it bravely ushered the next course of spiced Butternut Broth. A deeply comforting broth loaded with coconut cream, chilli oil and lobster dumplings plus an intriguing underlying tang of Thai curry. Kudos to the kitchen for these perfectly executed union of flavours. Moving along the next dish extolled the extravagance of Foie Gras. It had been treated to a burnished glaze of Miso and attended by pan fried duck and a selection of vanilla stewed fruit. It was oohing and aahing all the way. I loved every morsel, it was a perfect plate of food and the fig, prune and apricot were especially luscious. I’d buy a barrel of them if I could. Paired with this elegant dish a ‘Cono Sur Bicicleta Pinot Noir 2011 from Chile an enjoyable wine, quite delicate with a rounded raspberry fruit finish which accompanied the richness of the foie gras quite suitably. Now Mick and I are not particular fans of the fruity sorbets that appear before the main course but Chef had veered from convention, turned it on its head and fashioned a palate refresher into a Michelin starred

event. He had created a balsamic Gazpacho Granita par excellance crowned with a small portion of caviar. The tiny crystals of tomato, cucumber and bell peppers bounced and zinged in the mouth for a complete cleanse of the palate. It was now time for the main event, Australian Lamb Rack with its culinary cohorts of roast garlic, a truly luscious deep magenta red onion marmalade, it was sticky, sweet and addictive. We have to confess here that we were reaching our satiation point and sadly could not do full justice to that tender, blushing cutlet but we certainly enjoyed every tasty forkful and together with the rich, fruity, Sicilian Merlot (2014 Surya Nero d’Avola Merlot IGT) the

course was a massive hit. Having bemoaned the fact we couldn’t squeeze in another morsel, dessert then hit the table. Who in their right mind couldn’t find space for a Baked Alaska? Italian silky meringue had been cloaked with Tiramisu ice cream and sweet raspberries and was perfected by a glass of Mars Whisky Iwai which had been aged in bourbon, sherry and wine barrels. Absolute bliss and a spectacular conclusion to an exquisite 8-course meal of gastronomic delights. Open daily from 6.00 pm till l.00 am. (The bar opens at 5.00 pm). Koh Samui is the third biggest island in Thailand, after Phuket, the largest, and Koh Chang, Koh Samui was once one of the richist islands in the world in terms of natural resources, where locals survived easily on fishing and farming, and enjoyed all the bounties of the sea, mountains and waterfalls. Then, some 30 years ago, backpackers and free-loving hippies discovered it, and gradually but surely news of the tropical paradise spread. Tourists were drawn to the island, so were investors, ready to cash in on a destination that would clearly turn a profit. Samui was to be turned not only into hippy's ides of a dream island, but everyone's dream island instead. As roads were laid, infrastructure built and hotels designed, Samui was ready for a whole new era: as a dream vacation for all. The island plays the role well. In spite of its almost hurried growth, with luxury hotels, fine dining outlets, spas and night life joints mushrooming all over the island, Samui also continues to provide the visitor with boundless natural beauty, coupled with all the fun-filled activities that any holiday should include: nature trekking, swimming at the waterfalls and hiking though the forests are just some of the outdoor fun to be had there. Visitors can also glimpse the island's rich local culture. As for getting to the island, Bangkok Airways provides an extensive network of flights, connecting by air all the major cities of the region. Do There are a wide range of activities to be found on Koh Samui. Sign up for island hopping to the neighbouring islands, a one-day trip that covers the famous five rock islands plus the swallow nest cave. The Five Islands' package comes with food too or else take a ferry from Bo Phut or Nathon pier to Angthong National Marine Park, and discover 42 islands for sightseeing, snorkeling and kayaking. Visit to the natural stone bridge at Koh Sam Sao, and the amazing emerÂŹald lagoon at Koh Mae Koh. Koh Hin Dub, with the longest beach, is considered the most beautiful island of all. For those who would prefer to keep to land though, rent a motorcycle, car or the local song-taew (red minibus) and enjoy a spot of beach driving. Check the rental rates with your hotel when getting a minibus to the picturesque Bang Rak, Choengmon, Chaweng, Lamai and Laem Set. Stop over at Koh Tan for sunbathing and swimming. There are several waterfalls in Koh Samui, with Na Muang Waterfalls (10 kilometres from Nathon) considered the island's most beautiful. There are actually two waterfalls: Na Muang I, at 18 metres high and accessible by car, and Na Muang II, at 80 metres high, and reached by a 30-minute walk. While Na Muang I is small, it nevertheless has historical significance, having been visited by several Thai Kings: King Rama V, VII and King Bhumibol. Today, it is also one of the island's water sources. The mummified monk (Luang Pho Dang, the exabbot of Wat Kunaram) is a must-see on Samui. Renowned amongst his disciples and Buddhists, Luang Pho Dang is also re-

membered for his serious meditation practice. After his death, his body did not decompose, and has been kept in a glass casket in accordance with his last request - to inspire the younger generation to embrace Buddhist teachings. The Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai) is however the most popular attraction. A sacred temple of the local people, here The Big Buddha statue sits 15 metres tall on the hill. The statue was built in 1972 by the local community, to provide visitors with a place to pay respect. The Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks (Hin Ta Hin Yai) comprise a famous rock formation depicting the male and female sex organs. In contrast to nature's own erotic display here, the spot is rather tranquil and beautiful, with a turquoise-blue pool nearby. Eat Eat, drink and be merry, as no visit to Koh Samui would be complete without experiencing at least some of the island's many fine dining outlets and award-winning restaurants, including: Art Cafe by June, formerly About Art & Craft, a vegan-friendly bistro (serving both meat and vegetarian options) and healthy bakery. The Cliff Bar & Grill, fusion of European-Mediterranean cuisine delights just as much as the venue's location - overlooking the crystal-blue waters of the bay and Elephant Rocks. For a view to remember, try also the award-winning Dining on the Rocks, but only if money is no object! The Page, a smart conceptual design beachfront restaurant, serves western and Thai fusion dishes. The Pier, a chic chill-out bar and restaurant, is known for having a great atmosphere, and the mood is kept romantic thanks to the venue's splendid sunset views. Prego, meanwhile, is one of the finest Italian restaurants on the isle, and is famous for its authentic pizza and home-made pasta. Great prices and services also. Red Snapper, an award-winning Mediterranean restaurant at the Chaweng Regent resort, features creative cuisine, live band and a chilled out ambience, with both indoor and alfresco seating. Or try local flavours at: Krua Chao Baan at a beach south of Lamai, or Bang Por Seafood on Bang Por Beach. Play The liveliest road in Koh Samui is Chaweng Beach Road. At noon, there are plenty of shops, fast-food and international dining options, but at dusk the road takes on a whole new look: with vibrant beats and colourful lights. Soi Green Mango is a hub of nightlife spots, including: The Ark Bar, Mint Bar, Jungle Club, The Reggae Pub, Solo Bar, Sound Club and the famous hillside Q Bar. And for anyone who is looking for a more chilled out ambience, head out for Fisherman's Village. Or else lie back on a daybed and sip a cocktail at The Sunset Terrace Lounge at Nikki Beach, a world-famous beach club concept with a fusion of dining, fashion, music and entertainment.

fairness-fitness-finery Chelation as New Year’s Resolutions?

Vol. 06 No. 01 | Jan 1-15, 2018

upcoming movies at Major Cineplex The Avenue Pattaya Insidious: The Last Key

The Shape of Water

Eating healthier, exercise more, and perhaps going to beauty clinic for makeover are probably the most common New Year’s resolutions for many people. One of the conventional therapy that has been the talk of the town is ‘Chelation’.

What about it? Before going into scientific detail, there is a reason why the name was given as ‘Chelation’. The word is derived from the Greek ‘chele’ which means clawing- yes, like the one of a scorpion or crab used to catch things. This makes sense because that is exactly what chelation does. Its concept is to grab the undesirable and excess metals such as lead, mercury, aluminum, arsenic, iron, copper, calcium, magnesium, zinc, plutonium, and manganese and excretes from the body through the urine. This can be done involving chelation agent called EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid). This organic compound was firstly used in 1940s for heavy metal poisoning detoxification. Nonetheless, it was later found that its ability is countless. The results from the study called “Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy” (TACT), sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, statistically showed that it can be an alternative cure for an expensive coronary artery bypass surgery. This can be achieved due to the fact that the synthetic amino acid can decrease the amount of calcium absorption in the bloodstream which will ultimate form the plaque or fatty deposits in arteries wall, so-called “atherosclerosis” heart problem, blocking the circulation. In addition, the therapy is the option for people who are healing from radiation and chemotherapy as it reduces inflammation and pain. This approach is also the solutions for diabetic complications, hypertension and depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, memory and cognitive disorders, and autoimmune disease. by Dr Natnicha Loichuen

Help reverse the premature aging effect? As another extra benefit, the action of antioxidant can diminish the fine lines at the corner of the smile and eyes by removing calcium from the soft tissues like skin and put it back into the bones where it belongs. This calcium deposition is the root of pale, hard, wrinkled look of aging called “calcinosis”. For the best result, the practitioners usually add vitamins and minerals to the EDTA solution to maintain the materials at the optimal level for the human health. Check if you may need ‘Chelation’ As you have read along, you might be questioning why would someone like me, who do not live or work in the polluted or contaminated area, needs chelation. Should it be rare circumstance? The answer is NO. Everyone actually has potential risk with heavy metal toxicity at some degree. For example, mercury which is one of ionic substance that serves no function in the body is naturally filling up in your teeth, in large amounts, it causes poisoning. Other typical sources are from vaccination, drinking alcohol, consuming non-organic or GMO food, and eating farm-raised fish or processed foods containing synthetic ingredients and additives. However, children, pregnant women, and patients with heart and kidney failure should not have chelation therapy at any dose. How does it work? Generally, the process of chelation is performed by the insertion of intravenous (IV) around the hand or arm to administer liquid EDTA into bloodstream. Each session can take several hours to complete and most patients need between 5-30 sessions. The frequency of therapy can be around 1-3 times per week. The procedure is similar to other kinds of injections. It should not be painful but it is possible to feel some burning, redness, or swelling at the infusion site. It requires no recovery time and so most patients are free to drive themselves home and resume their day. To be noted, it is report that some people need to go to the bathroom more often; nevertheless, this should be favorable since it means heavy metals already leave the body. New Year, New You by Rory Coughlan

Healthier Happy You New Year’s resolutions are a bit like babies: They’re fun to make but extremely difficult to maintain. Each January, roughly one in three people resolve to better themselves in some way. A much smaller percentage of people actually make good on those resolutions. While about 75% of people stick to their goals for at least a week, less than half (46%) are still on target six months later, studies have previously found. It's hard to keep up the enthusiasm months after you've swept up the confetti, but it's not impossible. This year, pick one of the following worthy resolutions, and stick with it. Losing Weight The fact that this is perennially among the most popular resolutions suggests just how difficult it is to commit to. But you can succeed if you don’t expect overnight success. If you want results yesterday, when desperation mode will kicks in. Be mindful of the valley of quick cures. Also, plan for bumps in the road. Use a food journal to keep track of what you eat and have a support system in place. "Around week four to six...people are known to become excuse mills. This is why it’s important to have someone there on a

regular basis to get you through those rough times. Personal trainers and fitness professional are there to help, avail of them. Stay Connected Feel like old friends or family have fallen by the wayside? It’s good for your health to reconnect with them. Research suggests people with strong social ties live longer than those who don’t. In fact, a lack of social bonds can damage your health as much as alcohol abuse and smoking, and even more than obesity and lack of exercise. In a technology-fixated era, it’s never been easier to stay in touch, so rejuvenate your relationship with friends and family. Fire up social media aps and google maps and follow up with in-person visits.

The Ultimate Therapeutic Massage This year is going to feature bold and glowing skin, shorter hairstyles, and lots of nail art. In short: It’s going to be gorgeous. Trends come and go, no doubt. And the way to make sure that you never look dated in your photos on social media — or, you know, real life — is to make them work for you. That might mean skipping some trends entirely, toning them down from what you’d see on the runway, or taking a risk and jumping with both feet in to experiment with something new. We asked experts in hair and makeup what trends they think are going to be new for 2018, and what’s still going strong from 2017. And who knows, maybe these will inspire you to change up your look, give you the fresh start you’re in need of, or break the beauty “rules.” Here, nine of-the-now beauty trends you should think about trying. They can even help streamline your makeup routine and make styling your hair easier and more effortless, too. Wins all around. This is what you’ll be seeing next year! 1. Bold lips and eyes will continue going strong In 2017, eyes and lips received the bold treatment: strong liners, full lashes, and full lips. That strong look will remain popular in 2018. Bonus: You look healthier when you have big, open eyes and lips. We all have had trends that make us all look like fashion victims, but this look will always be young and fresh. You don’t have to go all out to do it, either. Try a bold eyeliner paired with soft, simple lips. Swipe a colored mascara on the bottom lashes. In the day, a bold eye might work; at night, when you’re feeling more adventurous, doing both bold eyes and lips might be fun and daring. 2. Skin will be hydrated and dewy — Not matte For a time, matte skin was in. Not for long. A lot of women are complaining about how the matte trend is drying everyone out, especially in winter when skin is already parched. Not only can jumping on this trend help you avoid possible dryness and flakiness, but a well-hydrated complexion boasts plumper-looking skin, smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. Opt for crème or gel highlighters for a dose of a youthful glow, and shy away from powders, which will only accentuate dryness.

The upshot: Once you know how, it’s so easy to style it yourself at home. Before you leave from getting a new cut, ask your stylist for their pro tips. 4. Another twist on the bob — the blunt bob — is also here A bit of a twist on the lob that we’ll also be seeing in 2018: the blunt bob. Though it may recall the ’90s, the new bob is above the shoulders and is all one length. One bonus: The straight cut makes hair look thicker. If you want to give it a truly modern twist, Heaps suggests asking your stylist to "notch" into your ends and finish up with a razor to soften the edges

Winter Recharge With The Indulgent Cocoa Massage at Cliff Spa

5. Textured hair, like beachy waves, will stick around Beachy waves, which have followed the ombre hair color trend for a couple years, will still reign. You can get this carefree texture at home with a curling iron, but you may just have to try a new, different technique than you’re used to. The great news about this style (and the reason it continues to be popular) is that you don’t have to do it perfectly, making it way easier to master.

Indulge your senses with a soothing warm cocoa butter massage which will flush out impurities and revitalize your skin. Treat yourself to this relaxing 60-minute indulgence that uses a rich blend of Cocoa butter and Vanilla essential oil that will leave you feeling relaxed and invigorated!

6. Complexions will be glowy and light-reflective The bold, strong look may be in, but so is lightreflective, glowy skin. Pro tip: Unless you work in a creative industry, save the shimmer and glitter for nighttime.

For enquiries or to book this promotion, contact Cliff Spa at 038 25 0421 ext. 2828 or email: cliffspa@royalcliff.com

7. Rather than highlights, color melts will be in Rather than going for typical highlights, ask your colorist for color melts, which are highlights that blend into your base color. Think darker on top and fading lighter towards the ends. The goal here is to add shades of color, lending locks a sun-kissed look. It’s extremely versatile, too — you can go for color melts if you have blond, red, or brown hair. This is especially wearable if you’re also amping up texture with beachy waves. 8. Men will keep styles short and clean, with a twist In terms of what guys will be wearing, their styles are going to be far-reaching. Hairstyles for men will range from short and clean to long and tousled. While they may still opt for classic styles, they also want to add modern touches without adding much effort or upkeep. That’s why you’ll see low drop fades, added layers, lots of texture, and looser side parts.

3. Shoulder-length 'lobs' are still in style The “lob,” or long bob, is going to continue to be big. When you bring it up above the shoulder, you get volume on top and it’s a lot easier to blow-dry. Shorter haircuts are not just for old ladies anymore! The only catch is that, ideally, you’d go back into the salon to get the shape freshened up every six weeks.

at Aisawan Spa

9. Nail art with dynamic geometric designs will be big Get ready to flash an impressive mani this year. It’s not enough to have one color donning your nails, now you need varied colors — and multiple designs. Geometric nails are one of the top trends for 2018, according to Pinterest, which recently unveiled their top 100 forecast in beauty, health, and lifestyle categories. Think black and white, geometric lines, negative space nails, and nail art. Get ready for your nails to be your canvas for the ultimate in self-expression!

s it enters its Jubilee Year, Cambridge Tutors College London – better known as CTC – is broadening its Thailand links through exciting new initiatives under the expert leadership of Dr Chris Drew and his team. This year will see closer relationships with top Thai educational establishments, as well as with international STEM-focused educational organizations, resulting in new, co-developed courses that fit well with the specific needs of Thai students and their families. 2018 is also the year that CTC will welcome its first Thai full-scholarship student. CTC is an international independent sixth form college that sets and maintains high academic performance standards. Since 2000, 81 percent of all A-Level grades have been A*-B – demonstrating the excellent quality of education delivered by CTC’s highly-qualified and respected body of Tutors. Students are expected to fully commit to their studies and are supported through the UCAS process to ensure they receive offers from their first-choice universities, and ever since 1958, the college has tutored students to study at the top universities in the UK - including Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, LSE and Imperial. The College’s adult-focused learning environment is driven by tutorial teaching. An average class size of six ensures that each and every student gets maximum support from their specialist subject tutors – both in lessons and in weekly one-to-one appointments. The extra-curricular

program then further develops a student’s academic English and subject knowledge. CTC’s curriculum may be challenging, but its learning environment is flexible: The College offers a two-year and 18 months A-Level programme, a pre-sixth form GCSE course and a pre-sixth form English Language Preparation course with specific subject study opportunities. This coming September 2018 CTC will offer the NCUK Foundation course – an exciting addition to the portfolio, and one that fits well with many Asian students’ academic planning. CTC is located next to attractive parkland in a leafy suburb environment, yet is just twenty minutes from the heart of London - students can directly experience one of the world’s most vibrant, cultural and historical cities without suffering the stresses and strains – and costs! – of inner-city living. Mainline stations are just five minutes’ walk away,

and there is easy access to both Heathrow and Gatwick airports, especially when using the College’s own Airport Pick-up Service. Students’ learning and development is not restricted to purely classroom activities. Ease of access to London, Brighton and beyond means that students enjoy regular weekend and evening cultural/social outings; popular sports include football, basketball, badminton, table tennis and tennis. Sports sessions are run weekly, with regular in-house tournaments throughout the year allowing students to develop leadership and team-building skills. Turning now to Thailand: The College has worked for many years with the Thai Embassy who have sent many students to CTC, and the Director of the College Alumni Program – former Headmaster,

David Wilson – has made Thailand his home. This academic year, the College is forging a close working relationship with the famous Amnuay Silpa School in Bangkok, and was the proud Platinum sponsors of one of the school’s “Formula 1 in Schools” competitive teams: Team Pursuit Racing. F1 in Schools has rightly been called “The Oscars of STEM competitions”, and the Amnuay Silpa teams – total newcomers to the competition – managed to win three awards on their first attempt. As fantastic result. CTC understands that the global education market is changing, and that not all international students will have the time or other resources to commit to a full A-Level course, so has placed itself at the forefront of Continued on page 4/24

by Magna Carta Law Office

Rights of an Alleged Offender / Defendant in a Criminal Matter A criminal case is a lawsuit brought by a prosecutor employed by the local government which charges a person with the commission of a crime, or by an individual who claims to have been damaged by a criminal act. The claims are usually made at a police station. In Thailand, criminal cases are divided into two categories. 1. Criminal cases that cannot be compromised or settled are initiated by government prosecutors. These are criminal cases that affect the public peace or causes harm to society, the security of the country, are a threat to life or physical well-being, or to public or personal property. This includes serious crimes such as dealing with drugs, deforestation, illegal gambling and corruption. 2. Criminal cases that can be compromised. These are criminal cases that do not affect public peace. They are offenses that affect an individual or a group of individuals. Some of these criminal cases include trademark infringement, defamation by slandering or libel, revealing trade secrets, committing fraud, cheating a creditor, embezzlement, trespassing, copyright matters, etc. The victim must personally file a complaint within the three-month statute of limitations, which runs from the date of knowing the crime and the recognition of the suspect. Investigation Stage During this stage, the police will conduct the initial investigation, interview witnesses, collect evidences, and issue a police report. The alleged offender has the following rights: • The alleged offender is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a responsible doubt. • To have a lawyer represent them in a criminal matter without going through the investigating and prosecuting stage. A judge will consider the case from the evidences and witness’ statements. If the judge decides that there is a sufficient factual basis, he will stamp a seal accepting the case for prosecution. The suspect will then defend himself in court. (From this point, he is referred to as the defendant.) If the judge decides that there is an insufficient factual basis, he will dismiss the case. • To meet and consult with his lawyer in private. The accused may make a written or oral request to a policeman

to meet his lawyer at a police station. The suspect will have to name the lawyer with whom he wants to meet. An alleged offender who cannot afford a lawyer will have a lawyer provided to him at no cost. • For foreigners, it is their right to have an interpreter provided by the police or court to translate or explain the legal procedures. • To have a lawyer present with them throughout the investigation stage. • To bail. The alleged offender can post bail himself or it can be done by a relative, his lawyer or a bailsman. The person requesting bail must submit a written request to the investigating officer, who will ask for particular additional documents. The results of the bail review shall be announced within 24 hours. Court Stage The Defendant has the following rights: • The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a responsible doubt. • The defendant has one month to appeal to the Appeal Court or to the Supreme Court. This time begins from the day that the judgment is read. The jurisdiction of the Supreme Court is discretionary and not all appealed cases are accepted by the Supreme Court. • In case the defendant cannot afford a lawyer and the potential penalty includes imprisonment, or if the defendant is less than eighteen years old, the court may appoint lawyers for the case at no cost to the defendant. Goodyear announced intelligent tire trial, expands fleet management solution

A long-time leader in tire management for racing, trucking and aircraft fleets, The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company is now applying its expertise to a fleet of semi-autonomous electric cars. Goodyear announced that it is equipping Tesloop, a city-to-city mobility service that exclusively uses Tesla electric vehicles, with wireless sensors in its tires to improve overall tire management and maximize uptime for its growing fleet. “We want to build the future, not just observe or read about it,” said Chris Helsel, Goodyear’s chief technology officer. “As the new mobility ecosystem continues to take shape, we are taking steps to match the pace of technical

change in the transportation industry and develop tire innovations that meet the intelligence of the vehicles riding on them.” “When you are operating cars nearly 24/7/365, minimizing tire incidents is critical to the customer experience and the business model,” said Rahul Sonnad, Tesloop’s CEO. “The possibilities for data-driven tire diagnostics are remarkable and promise to help a business like Tesloop operate more efficiently and make our vehicles the safest on the road.” Tesloop operates a fleet of Teslas that average up to 17,000 miles per vehicle, per month. Its highest-mileage vehicle, a Tesla Model S in operation since 2015, recently exceeded 300,000

service miles. Goodyear has been working with Tesloop since January 2017 to study the effect of autonomous technologies on tires. Goodyear’s effort with Tesloop builds on its successful commercialization of Goodyear Proactive Solutions for truck fleets, using advanced telematics and predictive analytics technology to allow fleet operators to optimize fuel efficiency and precisely identify and resolve tire-related issues before they happen. In addition to its fleet management offerings, Goodyear is also working with automakers to provide tire information to vehicle control systems to enhance safety and

Cambridge Tutors College London short-term course development. A range of flexible courses, launched in September 2017, offers students and schools the opportunity to develop their academic English within a solid framework of a specific course. There is also a successful one-term GCSE taster experience offered to schools for up to 30 students at a time, and a Summer School opportunity. More courses will be announced over the months ahead, with a strong emphasis on STEM and

medical-based courses. Already in the planning stage is a tailor-made STEM-oriented Summer School for students of Amnuay Silpa. This program will align with the Thai summer vacation period of early May, will offer a full-immersion English language experience, and will focus strongly on applied IT and mathematics skills – all in keeping with CTC and Amnuay Silpa School’s shared focus on Innovation, Leadership, Critical Thinking and Entrepreneurial Spirit. CTC is a truly international college. It welcomes students from all around the world, not least from the Far East, where longer-established student sources such as Thailand, China, Malaysia, Vietnam and Myanmar are now being joined by Hong Kong, Singapore and The Philippines, thus further enriching the international-student study, social and living environment. International students also benefit from mixing with local, London area students at the College, Dr Chris Drew - Principal, CTC London

and vice versa. For international students, CTC London offers a homeaway-from-home. The College understands the natural anxieties that its international students - who may be leaving their home country and family for the first time - might have, and offers a friendly, safe, secure and comfortable living environment for the students, through either homestay or boarding options. Homestay students have the opportunity to live with a carefully chosen local family while studying at the college. This is an excellent ‘full-immersion’ UK experience, and most homestay students settle in very quickly; for students who prefer the company of a peer-group community in a more sheltered setting, our new boarding provision (for up to 50 students) is just a short walk from the College campus. It offers high quality accommodation, and all rooms have en-suite facilities. Last but not least, the College was awarded the highest rating in a recent Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) report who recognised the exceptional teaching and welfare offered at CTC. Cambridge Tutors College London is currently open for

applications for the September 2018 and January 2019 intakes, as well as for short courses in April and for Summer School. For direct enquiries, please email

admissions@ctc.ac.uk or apply online at https://www.ctc.ac.uk/ en/admissions/apply-online/ and the CTC local Thai team will happily assist you further.

Business News Paper and Page offers digital marketing solutions to help Thai markets grab more business opportunities Paper and Page, a Thailand-based creative digital agency, is now offering a full suite of digital marketing products including infographics, responsive web design, search engine optimization (SEO), social media management, and superb Englishlanguage content creation. These digital marketing solutions aim to help support Thailand’s marketing transition to digital society. Working across APAC with clients such as Hilton Hotels and Resorts, DoubleTree by Hilton, AgriSource, ThreadSol, and Indulge Fusion Food and Cocktail Bar, one of Bangkok’s hottest restaurants. The agency is accepting new clients with monthly marketing budgets of at least 22,500 baht due to quickerthan-expected growth. Robert Woodrich, CEO and cofounder of Paper and Page (Thailand) Co., Ltd., quickly recognized an opportunity while lecturing at Thammasat University and working with one of the market’s betterknown public relations agencies. He noted that while the big-name firms were astute at delivering traditional services, from clipping newspapers to wrapping gift baskets, they struggled to gain a foothold in the digital world. “Having met or worked with the heads of several local agencies, I knew that the Thai market

was ready for higher-quality, more-economical marketing communications services,” observed Woodrich. “Furthermore, few of our competitors are digital natives, whereas we grew up using now-commonplace tools such as smartphones and social media. Witsuda “Ice” Atjanakul, design director and co-founder of Paper and Page, holds a degree from topranked Chulalongkorn University as well as an architect’s license and leads a team of talented Thai branding experts, graphic designers, and interior designers.

“Before co-founding Paper and Page, I noted that few if any agencies in Thailand and surrounding Southeast-Asian countries could create branding and digital marketing products in house,” explained Atjanakul. “There was a gap in the market, and we seized the moment.” A member of the Thai-Canadian and Swiss-Thai Chambers of Commerce, Paper and Page provide first-class digital marketing products at competitive rates. To book your free consultation, kindly visit www.paperandpage.com and fill up the contact form.

Youth Focus Pressure, Stress, and the Gifted Student Because of their gifts, gifted students also tend to be more perceptive than other children when it comes to picking up on environmental cues, so they may be more sensitive to judgments from others (both real and perceived), as well as sometimes feel overloaded and overwhelmed by information. A lifetime of high expectations can lead gifted students to be extremely hard on themselves as they strive for increasingly higher standards and packed schedules. Gifted students are usually placed in school environments that are filled with pressure. Although students often need these accelerated tracks to keep them from getting bored in school, the demands of both the coursework and the environment of other gifted students can cause a great deal of stress. Children may work so hard to keep up (and stay ahead) that they begin to burn out from stress—which can be a dangerous state, both physically and mentally. Stress can create a vicious cycle, as it is more difficult to concentrate and pay attention when stressed, so students may experience low performance, leading them to be even

harder on themselves. Be on the lookout for significant changes in behavior that indicate burnout and stress, such as: • Physical symptoms that are often related to stress, such as stomachaches, backaches, and headaches. Other physical symptoms of stress and burnout can include frequent colds and other minor illnesses, and nervous behaviors, such as tics, stuttering, pulling out hair, or skin-picking. • Negativity or resentment towards school in a child who used to be generally happy or excited about learning. • Difficulty sleeping, fatigue, or low energy. (Please note that changes in sleeping patterns are a normal part of

adolescence, as teenagers tend to prefer to stay up later and sleep later, so tiredness is often a normal part of the life of an adolescent who has a tendency to stay up very late, and then has to be at school very early in the morning.) Concern should arise when children are exhibiting sleeping difficulties without other explanations, or are consistently losing sleep due to worry about excelling in school. • Extreme irritability, moodiness, insecurity, inability to make decisions, and/or overreaction in the face of events that the child was previously able to handle. • Acting out through destructive or aggressive behaviors • Self-medication with alcohol or drugs. Some parents may read the list above and feel that all of the points describe behaviors of the typical adolescent. The key in recognizing stress and burnout is to notice major changes in behavior that persist for more than a few weeks, and that seem to be more extreme than other children of the same age. Parents can help students who are experiencing stress

and burnout by trying some of the following ideas: • Put the focus back on effort, rather than innate talent. Gifted children are often very used to excelling (and therefore garnering a lot of praise) without having to put in a lot of work. When they are faced with tasks that require a lot of time in order to succeed, gifted children may feel that they have hit the limits of their ability, and experience stress as a result. Help them be realistic in terms of their expectations for the relationship between time invested and results. • Sometimes gifted children who are grouped together can engage in intense competition. Do not get

involved in this competition by comparing your child to others. Make sure that your child knows that you appreciate his uniqueness by supporting the path that he wants to take, even if it is not the most prestigious one. • Consider limiting the number of accelerated classes and/or extracurricular activities that your student can be involved in. Help students find activities outside of school where the focus is on enjoyment, not for the purpose of eventually filling out a college application. Make sure children have outlets for self-expression in an area that they enjoy, through activities such as writing, art, music or physical activity. Try to provide opportunities for unstructured time engaged in such activities; otherwise, lessons or clubs may feel like one more source of pressure. • Make sure that gifted students know that even if they feel burned out or disillusioned about school, they still need to be polite to teachers. Many gifted students are taught that they are as smart (or smarter) than adults, and therefore have the right to question and/or mistreat those that they feel are being unfair or giving them “busy work.” Talk to children about making choices on what assignments to work on when prioritizing, but also help them understand that they have to accept the consequences of their choices. Teach them how to stand up for themselves and question by being assertive without being rude or disrespectful. • Think about whether your child is in an environment that suits his needs, temperament, and learning style. Sometimes the best way to deal with stress is to remove oneself from an environment that is unhealthy and not going to change. Your child may need to switch to a school or learning track that is a better fit. Talk to your child about what might make school a better experience, and if he is interested in making a change. Ask about his favorite and least favorite teachers, and what their classrooms and assignments are like, to help gauge what would be a best fit.

5 ways to support an emerging reader Wait a minute, say many specialists – don’t believe all that hype. When your kids are little, the best way to help them read is both simple and fun: show them you love books and provide plenty of them at home. • Set the stage: Have books around, all the time. This doesn’t need to cost much; regular trips to a library will provide a great selection. • Put in the time: Try to read to your child at least 15 minutes a day. If your child wants to read to you, that’s great – but don’t give up reading aloud when you’ve got an emerging reader. Read-alouds are fun and comforting. They also help kids understand how words and sentences sound and feel together. • Preview and predict. Before you even open a new book with your child, take a moment to look at the cover

and illustrations. Let the child guess what might be next, and then enjoy what actually happens. • Talk it up. After you have read a story, talk about it. What happened first? Last? Did something like that ever happen to you? Expect to be surprised and delighted by your child’s answers. • Don't push too hard: As your child learns to read independently, do not demand reading at high levels. Children often love to read and re-read

a simple book, and parents can think they are stagnating. More likely, emerging readers are consolidating their skills before jumping to tougher texts. Of course, your child may still struggle with reading. Let’s face it: it’s hard! If you suspect that your child needs more support, make sure you talk with your school. For the vast majority of young readers, however, most reading specialists agree: when reading at home, read what you love, and the skills will follow.

‘The Hearse’ is an idiot plot without any equal

Most likely, the worst horror film of 1980

Really bad movies have their own fascination. It’s good now and then to salute the worst as well as the best. Bela Lugosi starred in what’s probably the worst movie of all time – Plan 9 From Outer Space – where the spacecraft are certainly flying dinner plates. But the silly effort is remembered with fondness

by movie buffs, the more so as it was Lugosi’s last movie before his death half way through production in 1956. Appearing in 1980, ‘The Hearse’ has few redeeming features, certainly not the idiot plot. The movie’s only humour is unintentional and barely visible. The idiot in this case is a young woman,

played by Trish Van Devere, who decides to move to a small town to live in the house of a dead aunt. She makes the decision, so we are told in a pointless scene with a psychiatrist, because she wants to put the events of the past year behind her, notably a nervous breakdown and a collapsed relationship. So Trish drives for 24 hours and arrives in the small town in the middle of the night. Her car collides with a huge black hearse but nobody is injured and, miraculously, there’s no damage to her vehicle when daylight shows up. Who is driving the hearse remains a secret as it disappears round a bend soon after the accident. She is then shown round the house by a garrulous lawyer played by Joseph Cotton who seems to think the house should have been left to him in the dead aunt’s will. Trish next has a runin with the local sheriff and is cheered or jeered whilst jogging by two teenage boys. From these encounters, we

learn that sex starvation appears to be rampant in the old town. Trish moves into the house and there are soon the expected ominous happenings, including a music box which plays even when shut, a slamming door or two, the appearance of the dead aunt in a mirror and at a window, footsteps in the middle of the night, and broken doors and windows which don’t need the repairman to look as good as new. Meantime the black hearse appears a couple of times but nobody knows why. If these happenings had occurred to you or me, we would immediately have cancelled the vacation on the grounds that the darned place was haunted. But not our Trish. She gets up every morning fresh as a bobbin and ready to take more insults on the chin from the hostile locals. When she tries to buy some provisions at the local store, she is told “we don’t deliver out there”. Then, quite out of the blue, Tom turns up. He’s dishy,

polite and old fashioned. Trish kinda likes him, especially after he takes her for a trip in a row boat. It’s obvious to anybody watching the film that Tom is in reality a ghost, the boyfriend of the dead aunt, but Trish persists in believing he’s just a normal all American boy. Oh, and he’s good in bed by the way. In this movie, you never find a consistent framework for the terrible things which are taking place. We are told that the dead aunt was interested in witchcraft, although how this relates to the rest of the so-called plot is a complete mystery. And why is Tom hanging around seducing young women? Then there’s the local priest who seems to think Satan may be involved and holds up his cross as winds blow through the old

house. Is the residence really haunted and, if so, what bearing does that have on the rest of the characters? At the very end, we see the black hearse crashing into a ravine and bursting into flames. Tom is in the driver’s seat and smiling just before the catastrophe. Maybe he knows something we don’t about the afterlife. Pity they never made a sequel. Pitiable but most certainly understandable.

Points to Ponder The Thinking Man’s Column By Paul James

Anyone For Plastic Soup? Oceans are the largest food source on the planet and are the worst place imaginable to dump plastic, chemicals and other waste forms. It’s a vicious circle as sea life eats and absorbs those waste materials, we eat the sea life and – voila - we are slowly killing ourselves. These days, when something goes wrong anywhere in the world, the easy way out – it seems – is to blame China. From rare earth mineral supplies to currency manipulation, plastic goods to pollution, everyone gets in on the act and begins China bashing. Over the years, China has slowly emerged as a successfully developing country, but is being punished for its success by some of the more developed countries who seem to be more than a little jealous. True, China produces more plastic goods than any other country, but is anyone being forced to buy those products? The Italians have just banned plastic bags. Presumably, that means the Italian underworld will need to stuff their readies into suitcases – but ironically - won’t those suitcases be made of plastic? The dumping of plastic trash can be even deadlier than the ever present risk of oil spills at sea. In 2008, according to the American Plastics Counsel, the plastics industry in America employed 1.3 million people in more than 18,500 official plastics facilities, and they also identified plastics as the third largest manufacturing industry in the United States. Only three years ago, 250 billion pounds of tiny resin pellets made from plastic were shipped around the world to international plastics facilities. Is there any reason to believe that China is the only mass producer of plastics? Surely it is about time China bashing countries start to put their own houses in order and begin to work with China to regulate the production and disposal of plastics. The Great American Garbage Patch in the Pacific Ocean is home to a floating garbage dump that is an area about the size of Africa. It is created by Pacific currents carrying refuse from North America, Japan and other islands to a point in the ocean where it forms a revolving mass of flotsam that is estimated to contain a staggering 3.5 million tons of rubbish – 80 percent of which is plastic. Charles Moore is the founder of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation that is dedicated to restoring the marine environment and he is credited with discovering The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Moore spends his life studying the ocean and has famously described his findings as “plastic soup”. In some cases, according to Moore, there is more plastic in the ocean than there is plankton, the natural food organism of the high seas. Moore estimates that this area holds as many as one million plastic pieces for each square mile of ocean. Plastic is non-biodegradable and this adds to the problem of what to do with the plastic items nobody wants. There is no natural process that breaks plastic down, and the genius of humankind has once again done an about turn and shot each of us in the foot with every new plastic product or invention created, used and then dumped. When the time comes to throw that old plastic bucket, toothbrush, golf ball, glue stick, six-pack rings, plastic bags, umbrella

handles or comb into the trash, it is usually a case of out of sight, out of mind, and into the sea it goes, albeit unknowingly to most individuals. If the closest landfill is too far away, or too expensive, a burial at sea seems to be the obvious alternative to waste disposal companies and their trash. A process called photodegration breaks plastic into smaller fragmented pieces over time, but plastic never completely disappears. Those fragmented pieces are called ‘nurdles’ or ‘mermaid tears’ and as any intelligent mermaid will tell you, those ‘tears’ will penetrate every orifice known to humans – and fish. The fish (and birds) eat the ‘nurdles’ and other alien elements that plastic creates, which is a frightening thought when you realize that dumping plastic into the ocean seriously threatens the food cycle – and endangers human life.

Ready made washed up ingredients for plastic soup (Photos courtesy of articboy.com)

China alone cannot shoulder all the blame for the world’s aches and pains, plastic or otherwise. After all, half of Hollywood’s superstars have plastic body parts, computers have plastic components, mobile telephones, car parts and condoms (yuk!) are all made of plastic and minute fragments of any or all of those products could be hidden in your next meal! Reflect on this point to ponder when you dig into a seafood platter or when you next order a home delivery of shark fin soup and prawn noodles from your local Chinese restaurant - which will be delivered in plastic containers – although not necessarily made in China!

here is no question that animals of all sorts have played a major role in human history. The fleas carried by rats wiped out up to half of the European population during the later middle ages. In the ancient world, attacking armies would sometimes catapult baskets of infuriated ants or killer bees over the city walls to destabilize the opposition. When we come to the twentieth century, there’s a lot more evidence to gnaw at, especially in wartime. Some animal heroes may have been a figment of someone’s imagination, such as the cat who was taught to ring a warning bell when enemy planes were approaching London. Still on felines, it’s not totally proved that Tiddles, a Liverpool moggie, managed to dial the emergency number 999 after his master was buried under rubble. Still, never mind. In war, animals were perhaps never as important as they were in the first world war. If the millions of men conscripted into a dozen armies were largely innocents abroad, so were the animals who served them, especially the horses and mules in the transport and artillery services who mostly died giving devoted service. The British lose a quarter of a million horses killed by gunfire or gas attacks, and many more succumbed to illness and starvation. Even today, it is hard to envisage the absolute horror of life at the western front. As the war progressed, it became clear that cavalry was outmoded. Machine guns could mow down riders and horses by the thousand. Barbed wire and shell holes similarly made it impossible for cavalry to play a part in most campaigns. The close relationship between rider and steed declined as four legged creatures were restricted to carrying large loads of provisions, wounded men or the larger weapons of war. By 1917 the western front was a waste land. Gone were the hares, rabbits, pigs, cattle, dogs and cats were a common sight in the early stages of the war in 1914 and 1915. But later all that remained were rats, lice and human beings living in unmitigated, trench squalor. When the British were driven back towards Amiens in a campaign of 1918, the soldiers’ contact with animal life was restored in the undestroyed countryside. They even came across ostriches and emus in a chateau deserted by its owner.

Other animals were recruited into service. Dogs and pigeons were employed as messengers and mice and canaries were helpful in warning sappers of an impending gas attack. Some unusual pets showed up at the front including several monkeys and many goats, one of whom had a mania for tobacco and would snatch cigarettes from soldiers’ mouths and devour them. Such eccentricities might have lightened soldiers’ lives or even provided treasured memories. One cat, known as The Landlady, used to parade up and down in no-man’s land in search of rats and in full view of both opposing sides. Anything that spelt death for rats was undoubtedly welcome. Soldiers may have found consolation in looking at the heavens at night or in contemplating butterflies and moths, hopeful that nature would survive the war along with the conscripts themselves. But for the time being rats, lice and fleas remained the soldiers’ enemy. Richard Van Emden has written exhaustively about the first world war and his new book is as excellent as all the others. “Tommy’s Ark: Soldiers and their Animals in the Great War,” is published by Bloomsbury and is conveniently available at Amazon for around US$25.

Local Sports Dave Maw climbs the podium PSC Tropical golf from BJ's for the first time this visit! by Derek Brook

by James Olson

Plutaluang (Big Navy) It was 14 golfers that set out to take on the challenge of Plutaluang, or as we know it Big Navy. The course was in good nick with the greens being a little on the slow side for the first hour, but as soon as the sun was out the greens did an about face. There was a threat of rain but that passed as quick as it arrived. With a small field we played all the novelties and only the one division with three placings. Dave Maw, a little slow to start this campaign, showed he was out for business. Dave finished the day with a very good 39 points six clear of his opposition. Second past the post was JC Lhoste my god the man is having a purple patch! He just keeps greeting the judges with good scores. Third went to the count back with Glenn Smith getting the nod over Keith Buchanan, Keith has lost a few in recent times via the count back! At least mate you are there about. Results: 1st - Dave Maw (13) 39 points 2nd - JC Lhoste (29) 33

With only one farewell and it seems that we no sooner say farewell and no sooner we are welcoming him back, Buffalo Bill Steinmann. See

you soon Bill. D-For was the happy recipient of many donations for the needy children of Pattaya and the golfers and punters at The Swan are thanked for their generosity. D-For has become quite famous with the help that he given. The GS is a friendly golf outlet and caters for and encourages all golfers male and female to have a hit at any of our weekly outings. We generally play Mondays and Thursdays at one of the many fine golf courses in and around Pattaya. Contact Peter Grey if you are interested on 0861 503086, or call into The Growling Swan.

Khao Kheow (Stableford) Yes I know we have been here before but you can be assured we will be going there again as usual. There are over 25 golf courses in the area but every month when we look to make our list for the following month this goes down first. This is a great golf club. On this day we were up and out from BJ’s nice and early as the weather in the area was ‘unsettled’ and we were hoping for a good day out. So at the course after a quick book in and change we were down to the start nice and early, and were told we could get off straight away. It is surprising how often we are allowed an early get away. Truth is usually we are told that our tee time is the only one it can fit in at practically all courses and if you are early can usually tee off early. Weird innit? However off we went with a very strong wind against us. As we were playing the C nine, first you had to be careful as with a lake on the left and O.B on the right this can be a dodgy drive. Then, this being a par 5, you have usually two more shots into the green. Against a very strong wind this became three at least, happy days, In fact the first three holes are into

Patrick on left and Rob on the right. the wind. So continued the day as against the wind was very difficult and with it behind it was not much better. The first nine holes were as we expected, hard work, but you cannot do anything about the weather so into the back 9, the A nine where the first four holes were into the teeth of the, by now ‘Gale’. But there was always the thought that from the 5th it would be all downhill, so to speak. And so it was. The course was in decent shape and just as difficult as ever especially on the greens where with the strong winds the ball went where it wanted at times. However despite the strong wind when we got to the clubhouse all the players had smiles on their faces. Weird people at times these golfers. Fed and watered it was back to BJ’s and into the results. In the A flight, zero to 19,

the winner was Rob Brown with 37 points ahead of Brian Parish in second with 36 points. In third was John Davis with 30 points with Tom Herrington in fourth with 29 points. In the B flight, 20 up, the winner, by a street, was Patrick Poussier. Patrick who had 42 points in that wind and on that difficult a course that it was truly a round for him to remember. Way back in the dust with 33 points Don Carmody was in second with Carole Kubicki in third with 32 points. We then had a four way countback on 31 points that saw Derek Brook in fourth. After all guess who does the countbacks! Best front nine was Daryl Evans with 18 points and best back nine was Andre Van Dyk with 17 points. Then all went home early, tired out from a day of fighting the wind. T.T.F.N.

Stableford – White Tees Guys that have been coming here for years say this is the best condition that they have ever seen Green Valley. The weather is just about perfect these days so golf in Pattaya is at its’ best right now. Our two Frenchmen, Thierry and Alain had to share a podium spot with 38 points on the card. A slimmed down Peter Thomas carded 39 points on the day and has received an ice cream ban from Capt. Phil for the rest of the year. It seems Steve Coghlan either runs hot or cold and will shoot 24 points or, as

today, 42 points. Today was his day and dropped several good putts for an easy win over the rest of the field. Nice going to Steve and also to our visiting friend from the Czech Republic, Eva Solcova who claimed the near pin. We played from the forward tees this morning and judging from the scores, maybe we were too kind! This is one of our favourite golf courses in Pattaya and while the greens can often be cruel, you will have a great day of golf out here. Today was all Robbie Taylor and the Gods of golf were on his side as his playing partners watched him sink everything. It was one of those days (why don’t I get them anymore?) for Taylor and it is obvious he could do no wrong. Results: 1st – Robbie Taylor (15) 47 points 2nd – Alan McKendry (12) 42 points 3rd – Blake Hanna (18) 40 points Parichat Links – 1-Man Scr. – Yellow Tees Ok, those are all great scores but first look at the fine print. This was a oneman scramble out there today, hence the big numbers. Josef finally got in the money after playing with us for a few years and his 46 only needed 4

Mulligans, so a great round for Josef.Kerry and Sean also done good out there and 44 points was a pretty good result also. Franjo took our Caddy Smile near pin today. With this format, it is just a fun day of golf doing something different. You get one Mulligan every hole and can use it on the tee, approach, green or anywhere. Once you declare, then that is the ball in play. Try it sometime and enjoy the luxury of getting to hit that terrible shot over again! This scramble works great at Parichat, try it sometime and you will enjoy this course a lot more than you normally would. Results: 1st – Josef Birchberger (15) 46 points T-2nd – Kerry Smith (17) 44 points T-2nd – Sean Hastings (18) 44 points Mountain Shadow - Stableford – Blue Tees Seemed a bit dodgy playing off the blue tees here at first, but when it measures out to just 6,300 yards, it

Sean, Franjo, Josef and Cary in the winner’s circle. was the correct distance. The course was in good condition and everyone experienced a great day out. Our buddy Nate came down from Korat where he is working with the Royal Thai Air Force and had a jump on a weekend getaway. Thirty-one points for Welchert gets third place today. We finally got Kenny away from watching the NFL and his Patriots for a day of golf and 35 is good enough for second. Mark Wood was the story of the day and wins it all with 36 as well as getting the near pin for a well-earned victory. Results: 1st – Mark Wood (8) 36 points

2nd – Kenny Aihara (7) 35 points 3rd – Nate Welchert (15) 31points The Golf Club is “The Home of Golf in Pattaya” and located in the Heart of Pattaya on Soi L.K. Metro. Local Sports Rob and Brian tallest at Greenwood by Dick Warberg Greenwood – St Put your hand to your ear. Hear it? It’s the building crescendo at Tropical golf. Just a few rounds to play before we crown Golfer of the Year, the Golfer of the Month race remains close, and our most excellent Christmas/New Year party is almost here. For those in contention for various honors each stroke seems to count double. This Friday the drive to Greenwood gave twenty two golfers time to prepare mentally – or take a nap. Either way we arrived at Greenwood to a large Norwegian tournament preparing to tee off. All worked out well though as the Starter split our group across two tees to get us out of the way, and it was smooth sailing. All three nines were open, and we played the A and C courses in no order due to the two tee start. Weather was rather hot with nary a hint of wind. The course and greens were in good to very good condition, though fairways still suffer from too many creeping weeds. On a side note pity the hapless Norwegian golfer

Rob and Brian who put his very near pin on the Tropical golf flag, not only canceling our own, but later trying to figure out why someone much farther away won the award. The handicap formula treats Greenwood quite generous, and everyone found themselves with a few extra strokes to use. With that you'd expect scores to be high, and they were. With one exception, if you didn't break handicap you were in the audience not part of the show. A-Flight (0-20): Once again Rob Brown (c/h 12) wins and also had the fewest strokes of the day with a fantastic 41 points. Excellent! Next Tom Herrington (19) continued his winning ways with 38 points, followed by

John Hackett (18) with 37. Good scores! B-Flight (21+): A different Brian won today as Brian Gabe (23) had the best score of the day with a sky high 42 points! Way to go Brian. Then Barry Elphick continued his winning streak with a fine 37 points. Graham Buckingham (27) was the lone non-handicap buster to get mentioned, taking third in his flight with 34 points. Near Pins: Carol Kubicki and Dick Warberg had the best par 3 shots. Best Nines: Best nines (non winner) went Torsten Bischoff and Richard Kubicki Long Putt: Barry Elphick drained the best putt on C-9 to with this one.

Treasure Hill In a week that saw the Growling Swan crippled with a huge Injury list, nine golfers were up to the challenge and were prepared to take on Treasure Hill GC. Alex Field has put his back out, now a lot will pre diagnose how his injury came about, but I can tell you all it is a genuine golf injury. Not sure if this report gets to Italy or not but one can only hope that I am believed. Then it was Steve Younger who threw himself in front of a way wood drinks trolley to save a well one is not sure as to what he was savingbut he sacrificed himself. In doing so the poor fella put his shoulder out! We wish them both a speedy recovery and hope they are back on the course real soon! As stated earlier we only had nine golfers therefore we played one division only, we chose to have only two spots on the podium with all novelties in play. It was Mashi Kaneta that lead the pack his 26 points were enough to keep clear of the pack albeit a small pack. With Dave Maw coming second ahead of the restof the large pack, beating Mike Johns via the count back system. Results: 1st - Mashi Kaneta (15) 26 points 2nd - Dave Maw (13) 25 points Near the Pin: 2 - Mike Johns 6 - Mashi Kaneta 13 - D-For 17 - Pierre Cere

Crystal Bay GC It was 14 brave combatants that had decided to gather at the Growling Swan to head up the highway to play Crystal Bay, one of our favorite courses. Weather wise it looked as though we were in for a good day; pleasant conditions greeted us and stayed with us all way. The course was in good nick as we have come to expect from this venue, hence being one of our favorite venues. The day was set, it was priced right, we had good weather and from the yellow tees it was to be a game with some very good scores! It was John Coetzee, playing in his last game with us came out with both guns blazing. Scoring 20 points on the front nine following that up with 26 points on the back nine. Hard to beat 46 points! Second past the post was Alex Field with another good score of 40 points. It was Buffalo Bill Steinmann making it into third. Results: 1st - John Coetzee (22) 46

Bill Steinmann, winner John Coetzee and Alex Field. points 2nd - Alex Field (17) 40 points 3rd - Bill Steinmann (13) 37 points Near the Pin: C4 - Dave Maw C7 - Dave Maw B4 - Mashi Kaneta B6 - John Coetzee Long First Putt: C9 - Alex Field B9 - Alex Field We gave welcome to Bear Wilks and said farewell to The Dynamic Duo, Frank Riley

and John Coetzee. Both will be missed, travel safe and hope to see you real soon! Alex set our resident hound D-For out to collect donations for the needy children of Pattaya and the punters and patrons are thanked for the contributions. For serious golfing with a dash of fun, the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions be male or female. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. Contact Peter Grey for bookings or any information on 086 1503 086.

Bangpakong (Stableford) This is about as far as we go on our trips to the golf courses we play, but it is not too bad as once we get out of town it is only a question of following the signs for the airport and it is mostly motorway all the way there. A nice run. The drive over we were soon signed in and outside a little early only to be told we could go as soon as we wanted and with seven groups this was good news, mind getting some of ‘the goldies’ moving can be hard work at times. So I sent the second group off first as it gave a little more time to get the mind in gear. First gear I am sad to say. The boys and on this day girls usually score well here, and after being told we could take carts on the fairways even the ‘goldies’ looked forward to a good day. And the weather was great, just as you would wish the weather to be to play golf. However, it did pay to put plenty of sunscreen on and to make sure you drank plenty of water. Despite the fact that buggies were allowed on the fairways they were still wet in places and the grass tended to be a bit long. Get into the rough and it was difficult to get out, however we

Brian, Tom and Dave did manage to get to the greens, only to find them a bit slow. However this is a course that gives up some good scores and I fully expected the scores to be high. Whilst we got away early we did tend to get backed up occasionally as some of the groups ahead tended to be more than a fourball, mind they moved quite well. It was a bit warm in the Sun but we all enjoyed the trip around and were soon back and showered. The trip back always tends to be a bit of a blur, especially if I am not driving, and even so we were quite late as we got into BJ’s. So it was soon into the results. We had three flights as now it is the high season we have many golfers. In the A flight, zero to 17, we had a great round and best on the day, as Brian Parish had

46 points and a fine Gross 74, and won the flight. In second was Mashi Kaneta with 42 points with Richard Kubicki in third with 40 points. In the B flight, 18 to 24, the winner was Tom Herrington with 39 points on countback over Mick Coghlan in second. In third was Dick Warberg with 37 points. In the C Flight, 25 up, the winner was Dave Cooper with 42 points ahead of Torsten Bischoff in second with 40 points and Barry Elphick in third with 39 points on countback over Don Carmody. We have a countback on each nine of the best score of those who are not amongst the flight winners. Front nine with 19 points the winner was Joseph Buchberger and the back nine was Don Carmody with 21 points. Then time to relax. T.T.F.N.

You & Your Pets Cats and small dogs lead pet growth in Thailand Households with pets continue to rise in Thailand, with the purchase or adoption of cats showing the strongest growth, followed by small dogs. One of the major driving forces behind this trend is urbanization, as the migration from rural to urban areas shifts people into high-rise flats and condominiums, particularly in Pattaya and surrounding areas. The phenomenon of pet parents is becoming increasingly common as families see their pets as part of the family nucleus. According to Euromonitor International, this is resulting in pet owners applying their own purchasing habits when buying products for their pets, spending time with their pets for leisure, and including their pets as part of their personal social image. Despite the Thai economy, people continue to spend more on their pets, says the research firm. Consequently, more pet shops are selling products that are marketed as “super premium” and purporting to have greater inherent benefits. These include brands that are organic, natural, raw, etc. Such claims are a common strategy in capturing the consumer base in Thailand, where a majority of consumers lack understanding in terms of ingredients and nutrition. In addition, dog-treat products from local players are seeing further development in terms of quality and offerings. Some are fortified and promoted as premium, thereby pushing prices upwards. The introduction of dog bakeries and home-based businesses for dog snacks is also contributing to this development. Pedigree, Whiskas, Royal Canin and Purina are some international brands that have a deep-rooted presence in Thailand. Local pet owners trust these brands after many years of television and radio advertisements. However, Euromonitor points out, national local players have grown more aggressive in conducting marketing campaigns. Some provide pet shops with financial aid, others partner with neighborhood pet stores for promotions. For example, local brand Bastassia (Nutrix PCL) uses aggressive discount sales in pet shops to compete within the mid-priced range despite marketing itself as premium. Internet retailing saw strong and stable growth in pet care over the past decade, and it remained the most dynamic channel in 2017. While hectic lifestyles have

been the key driver, the development of internet platforms and infrastructure, as well as rising ownership of digital devices are the major factors sustaining growth. Thirdparty websites that specialize in pet care, such as PetPro. co.th and TailyBuddy.com have grown in popularity. Moreover, popular online shopping platforms such as Lazada.co.th and Orami.co.th offer a wide range of pet products, some of which cannot be found in online pet specialists. Despite the economic slowdown, pet care is expected to continue flourishing as pet ownership is likely to improve and pet pampering becomes more prominent. Pet owners are expected to become more educated and sophisticated in understanding pet nutrition as internet penetration increases and information is more readily available both from online pet owners’ communities and manufacturer websites. Euromonitor International expects this to boost the growth of the premium segment for cat and dog food, while pet owners who previously fed their pets with unpackaged pet food are likely to switch to commercially produced pet food. Alongside this, internet retailing is likely to develop with many players and retailers cashing in on ecommerce and improving nonstore-based services, including delivery.

Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Celia and Wilson

This lovely mum and son combination were rescued from our local temple. Celia had 3 kittens 2 of which have already been re-homed, leaving just this little black and white rascal Wilson. This "Purrfect pair" would love to go to a new home together if possible.

Mr.Tibbs

This friendly handsome boy has been with us for a few years now, he just loves playing in the garden and is a good cat for catching vermin. He would love to go to a new home where he could be the centre of attention, but could also be a good friend for your lonely puss.

Temple kitten 1

This lovely kitten was born here just 6 weeks ago: we found her mum at our local temple. She was heavily pregnant. Just a few days later she gave birth to 5 beautiful babies. This one is called Moley and has many lovely colours.

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being.

Dogs Can Smell Hypoglycemia

It may sound like a TV episode of Lassie, but it's true: Dogs can sniff out a dangerous drop in blood sugar in a diabetic owner and alert the person to take action by pawing, licking, whining, or barking. A few dogs have even been trained and placed as diabetic service dogs. Their nose for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is correct 90 percent of the time, according to their trainers.

Going to the Dogs...

Temple kitten 2

This next lovely kitten is an unusual ginger girl as most ginger cats are boys. Just like her sister above, she is lively, friendly and very naughty as most kittens are. It would be nice to re-home her with one of her brothers and sisters.

Cat Corner

“A bone to the dog is not charity. Charity is the bone shared with the dog, when you are just as hungry as the dog.” ~ Jack London Dogs have about 100 different facial expressions, most of them made with the ears.

An adult cat can run about 12 miles per hour, and can sprint at nearly thirty miles per hour. To make a kilo of honey, bees must collect nectar from more than 4 million individual flowers.

Cat-scratch Disease

Cat-scratch disease is a bacterial disease that people may get after being bitten or scratched by a cat. About 40% of cats carry the bacteria at some time in their lives, although kittens younger than 1 year of age are more likely to have it. Most cats with this infection show no signs of illness. People who are bitten or scratched by an affected cat may develop a mild infection 3-14 days later at the site of the wound. The infection may worsen and cause fever, headache, poor appetite, and exhaustion. Later, the person’s lymph nodes closest to the original scratch or bite can become swollen, tender, or painful. Seek medical attention if you believe you have cat-scratch disease.
