Jay Daji and Dinple Dullabh: ‘Rodney Wayne has given me a great lifestyle with flexibility and a lot of opportunities’

odney Wayne is the best-known brand in hairdressing in New Zealand – but did you know it’s also one of the country’s oldest franchises? The company has over 40 years’ experience in the hairdressing industry, and during that time has helped many people develop sizeable and highly successful businesses. ‘Some of our franchisees have had no hairdressing experience at all, while others have started as stylists and grown to become salon owners themselves,’ says Julie Evans, Rodney Wayne’s CEO. ‘We provide the framework, the systems and support services, and they inject their management skills, enthusiasm and finance to operate the business.’
From the very start Dinple Dullabh, who owns two Rodney Wayne salons in Botany and Ormiston with her husband Jay Daji, is a great example of how the franchise works. ‘Rodney Wayne has been a big part of my life from the very start,’ Dinple says. ‘At 22 years old, I started as an apprentice in Rodney Wayne Wellington before becoming qualified, and then transferred to the St. Lukes salon in Auckland, where I worked for four years. It was a massive change, but Rodney Wayne provided a great environment for me to thrive. From here on, I became Stylist Of The Year and won the Recognition of Excellence award. When I became pregnant, I stayed at home for the next ten years and focused on my family, but seven years ago Rodney Wayne presented me with an opportunity to take up the franchise for the Botany salon. As I have always had a passion for the brand and the system, I had no doubt – and fortunately, my husband was right beside me, to help with this new venture. ‘With all the help from him and the Rodney Wayne support office, I’ve built up a very productive team at Botany. They are an essential key to
our salon taking out multiple awards, including winning Salon of the Year last year.’ And 2021 has seen Dinple take another big step with the opening of her second salon in the newly-built Ormiston Town Centre. ‘I was faced with an array of new challenges, from finding new highperforming team members to dealing with more disruption from Covid,’ Dinple admits. ‘But these learning curves meant that I was able to come out stronger, and proved the value of the support from Rodney Wayne and my amazing team.’
Thrive and succeed Dinple reflects on what she has achieved as a franchisee. ‘Not only has Rodney Wayne given me a great lifestyle with flexibility and a lot of opportunities, but it has taught me how to sustain a work-life balance,’ she says. ‘The franchise has taught me how to run a productive salon and team, and what it means to have a successful business. ‘My journey from being a technician, to a stylist, to owning two salons myself, is testament to how far passion and drive can take a person. With the support, systems and environment created by Rodney Wayne, anyone can thrive and succeed.’
Opportunities for you Julie Evans says that Dinple’s move into multi-unit ownership demonstrates both the value of the franchise and the potential the brand has to offer. ‘We now have over 50 salons and Shampoo ‘n’ Things shops around the country, and several of our franchisees own multiple outlets now. That speaks volumes for the quality of our business model – it really is a proven formula for success. We offer established business systems, group buying and brand awareness from the country’s largest hairdressing franchise, and training to ensure that salons stay right up-to-date with global trends.
