MAKING US PROUD | RAZIEL CANO

&

YOUNG SUCCESSFUL • Lesley Vazquez

Raziel Cano Marketing Director State Farm Arena Success for young people is an issue that abounds in consequence of persistence, perseverance and determination. In the Valley of Texas are great examples of “life arquitects” within our community, also bringing motivation and example to trace as they do every day. Raziel Cano is a living example of them, with 27 years old, an outstanding personality, and a very distinctive style in the show business; he is a young man who has managed to stand out in the valley of Texas. He runs State Farm Arena as the Marketing Director, he sings, he dances and he also makes live performances as a hobby, in addition of all this, his work speaks for itself, a young leader who has managed to take advantage of all his talents.

Favorite Quote “Though I’ll never change the world we’re living in, I can always change myself” Perfect date with a girl “A good wine, and a better conversation” Celebrity Crush ”Jennifer Love Hewitt” Movie preferences “Historical & Theological Documentaries” Inspirational person “Joel Cano, my father”

What do you consider to be a key for success, for young people like you, within the Show business in the RGV?

If you could describe very briefly about your “life” in one sentence what would you say about yourself?

The Entertainment business in general is a very competitive environment, it is of utmost importance to always look back at those who have helped you get to where you are at. To reach success you need humility to keep your feet on the ground, patience to conquer every single challenge as they present themselves, and of course dedication because failure is not an option. Don’t ever forget about the driving force the “hunger” which makes you get up in the morning and be the best at what you do.

A constant struggle to reach the highest limit possible in my lifetime. Be the best of the best.

8 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 56

How do you see yourself, personally and professionally in 10 years from now? I see myself conquering the Entertainment business, definitely growing professionally and reaching the highest position I can. I would love to be GM at State Farm Arena, reaching President status in the Event & Arena Marketing Con-

ference which I’m a part of. And of course, being a great father and husband. What advice would you give to the young RGV people looking to succeed and shine in their work? Never forget your mentors, keep your mind, ears and eyes open. Finish your degree, but always strive to continue learning. The best lessons you get in life are those that come unexpected, never give up in your dreams. Stay positive & love your life.

Business Owner and Personal Trainer

• by Arely Jimenez

How many years have you been a personal trainer? As a personal trainer I’ve been going on for fifteen years now. When did you become a certified trainer and what type of training do you offer?

Do you give any diet plans? Yes, definitely the personal training that I offer does involve diet plans. They are adjusted throughout their training. What is the most important key concept in a relationship between you and your students?

I was in my early twenties when I became certified for the National Federation of Professional Training (NFPT) . I’ve been doing all sorts of training, from working with bodybuilders, to power lifters, figure models, training all sorts of people to physical therapy.

COME RELAX TODAY, WHETHER IT BE FOR BUSINESS OR PLEASURE.

I have an aggressive attitude but at the same time not too hard. I like to get the training going and take it more serious.

I as well train myself and I go through the same training, dieting and supplementations they do. Everything I try to teach them I do as well as a competitive body builder.

What results have you achieved with your clients and over what time span?

What would you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

I give them six weeks and I demand results. In six weeks I’ve had clients who’ve lost up to 20 lbs. of body fat and they do get results.

I have a few. I remember just dreaming of having my own gym and once I opened my own business that was a great accomplishment. Then from there, buying another building to add on to this my gym is another accomplishment I was not expecting. As a trainer, seeing my clients achieve first place or second place in

What type of attitude do you use to motivate your clients?

Do you offer group lessons as well? I’m more of an individual session trainer. The most I’ll train is two people.

To me, it is more important knowing that I’m their personal trainer before becoming their friend. That way, I can give them the best results I can provide them. I keep it professional with each client. How do you set the example to your clients?

competition is a huge accomplishment. Owning my own National Physique Committee is also something I’m very proud of. What would you consider your biggest challenge as a trainer? I would think the challenging part for me is keeping your knowledge fresh. To keep my clients motivated and not bored throughout their training. It’s a challenge but not impossible.

Relay for Life of the Woodlands The American Cancer Society In the fight agaisnt cancer, silence is the last thing we need. Relay for Life event had a great turn out this year with volunteers and supporters helping raise funds for the fight against cancer.

What are you future plans in competition and business? My business expansion is one of my priorities. Next year I will be getting ready for another body building competition. I will also promote my competition and make it into a one day event.

I love my job. I never wake up and say I have to go to work. I love what I do and meeting new people. I can’t believe I actually get paid for doing this. What motivates you in particular?

My motivation is just to keep myself fit. I keep the thought to myself of being a body builder and bringing your body to that limit that you never thought you would. Is there a specific quote you always tell your students? I always tell them to “love what they hate” the most if they really want results. What is the most rewarding thing about your job? I love my job. I never wake up and say I have to go to work. I love what I do and meeting new people. I can’t believe I actually get paid for doing this.

ON THE SPOTLIGHT | HARRIETT ZIVELY

Beautiful Sound I wanted to share with you a journey that I have been on for some time and how it has affected me. As many of you know a few years ago I got hearing aids due to congenital hearing loss. What you don’t know is how bad it had gotten. • by Harriett Zively

I

t started about six years ago when my family began complaining how loud the television was when we were watching it together or when the boys were upstairs and I was downstairs they would yell down, “turn it down, Mom!” The problem was I couldn’t hear well enough to follow the dialogue even at that high volume. So we started using closed captioning so I could enjoy a program without making everyone else in the house miserable from the decibel level. Shortly I began noticing how often I was asking people to repeat themselves even in one-onone situations. I got more than a few frustrated looks. It became so bad I stopped asking and started trying to lip read just hoping I was understanding enough and being appropriate in my responses that people wouldn’t think I was crazy. Around this time it became apparent to me in social situations like luncheons or parties or even loud restaurants that I was unable to understand anything anyone was saying around me. Given my hearing loss and throw in some laughter, music, conversation, and someone had to be right in front of me so I could, between some sound and some lip reading, sort of catch the gist of what they were saying. At a luncheon table with all the head turning, the back and forth across the table, the roar of all the other conversations at the other tables, I was totally lost. This lost feeling eventually gave way to feeling anxious in anticipation of each upcoming social event large or small. Would I be able to hear enough to be part of the conversation? Would I be left out because I couldn’t hear clearly the words spoken? Not intentionally excluded, but outside the realm of possibility of fully engaging in the interplay of delightful conversation. I began to dread many of the things I love to do, parties, dinner out with friends, lunch with a group of girls. At those normal everyday gatherings I often felt very disconnected from everyone. This lead to a slow withdrawal from the circumstances that made me feel uncomfortable and less than. Finally, I decided I needed to find out just how bad was my hearing loss. Fortunately, I found a wonderful audiologist, Dr. Gloria Nemeroff. I went in the sound booth

18 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 56

and nervously clicked the button when I heard a sound. I even clicked sometimes when there was no sound. She called this a ghost sound and is another manifestation of my hearing loss. After the test, she came out with her wide smile and bright blue eyes and gave me the “good” news. I was a candidate for hearing aids. HEARING AIDS! What? THOSE are for OLD PEOPLE! And I am definitely NOT OLD!! Everything in me was screaming those words. I began to sweat, feel nauseous, my head was spinning. You see ladies my vanity nerve had been hit and it had been hit hard. When I calmed down and blood began to flow to my brain again, I thought well, ok, maybe, but only IF I can find some that no one will see AND that my long, not gray hair, will cover. And by the way, there is no way I am getting the behind the ear ones! I communicated all this to Gloria and she did it. She found the smallest, in the canal, hearing aids on the planet at the time and I agreed to try them.

ON THE SCENE | HOUSTON

Center for Hearing & Speech Gala

“My father said that we often do not know the value of something until we loose it. I can tell you that it’s profoundly true.” When I first got my hearing aids, now called listening devices, you know like communication devices aka cell phones, or writing devices aka pens, joking I just like the sound of that better, I could not believe what I had been missing! I initially had two programs. Yes, the devices are mini computers, not your grandma’s hearing aids! One program was for conversation with only a few people and one was for social settings where there would be background noise. These little computers can listen for the human voices in your vicinity and make the background noise fade away. I was free again! Free to jump back in to dinner at Ouisie’s Table, free to go to my friend’s Christmas party, free to attend those wonderful Gala’s for all the worthy causes we support. I felt great. A few months later I went back to Gloria for a check up. Something else you may not know about me is that I studied classical ballet for many years and had enjoyed classical music. Over the years the music had begun to loose it’s magic and majesty for me. It happened very slowly without me realizing it was me. I even told my mom that the last time I went to the ballet the orchestra sounded terrible and what in the world was wrong with them? The day of the check-up Gloria asked if I would like a music program put on my devices. I agreed. After she installed the program I popped them back in my ears and she turned on her radio. It just so happened to be on a classical music station. When the music hit my ears I burst into tears. The nuances of the melody caused by the richness of ALL the instruments had been silenced in my world. Now for the first time in many years I was hearing the music in all its’ fullness and glory, and all I could do was cry. My father said that we often do not know the value of something until we loose it. I can tell you that it’s profoundly true. To know the distance, the separateness, of not being able to fully engage with friends and loved ones is heartbreaking, depressing, and lonely. To know the fullness of restoration and engaging with the world just like everyone else or as close as I can come is a profound blessing. Why am I telling you my story? Because the miracle of restoring kids to the hearing world is happening everyday at The Center for Hearing and Speech.

Summer is one of my favorite seasons of the year, it’s a great opportunity to try new hairstyles and makeup looks! With the summer heat it’s sometimes difficult to find a makeup look that won’t sweat off within a couple of hours. Here’s some tips to long wearing all day makeup. Skin Instead of a heavy foundation try going with a tinted moisturizer. It’s lightweight but still gives you a decent amount coverage and some much needed SPF. If you must use a foundation, be sure to use a primer and a setting powder/ spray, this will help keep everything in place. Waterproof is your best friend. Waterproof mascara is great it’ll keep your eyelashes lengthened and voluminous all day long (without giving that raccoon look). Eyeshadow: To keep eye-shadow in place, you must use an eyeshadow primer. Another great product is cream eyeshadows they are easy to blend, you can use your fingers to apply. I would recommend setting the eyeshadow with a powder to keep the shadow from “creasing” for all day wear.

Eyebrows: Don’t forget the brows! Eyebrows are the frame of your face so don’t neglect them. Try using a wax based eyebrow pencil or waterproof gel, don’t forget to set with a powder to lock it in! Blush Cream blush can last a lot longer than powder, just blend the cream into the skin with your fingers or if you prefer a brush. Try something different, use that bright shade of lipstick you have in the back of your drawer. It’s makeup have fun with it! Summer Hairstyles for this Season I’m all about simplicity, if I can throw a hairstyle together and be out the door in 10 minutes, then I consider myself successful in life. Do a hairstyle that compliments your natural hair texture. In other words, don’t spend too much time curling/ straitening during the summer (Houston humidity is no joke) instead, go for an updo top knot buns and teased pony tails are great for warm weather. You’d be amazed at what a rubber band and a few bobby pins can do. Remember keep it simple.

ON THE SCENE | EDINBURG

Ashley Danielle Gomez Miss RGV 2014

Favorite color: Purple Favorite movie: The Sandlot Interests: Playing guitar, piano, and singing, composing music, working out, reading, volunteering, and painting.

What is the most important thing for you when you are on the stage competing? The most important thing for me is smiling, having fun, and praying that i don’t trip in the middle of the stage! How do you feel about winning the pageant after the hard work? It is the most relieving, exciting, and honoring feeling you could ever get in the world. In one sentence, how could you describe the meaning of a beauty pageant in your life? Beauty pageants in my life do not measure how “beautiful” someone is; they measure the impact that one can create on their community to make it a better place. What is the most difficult part of being in a beauty pageant for you? Although going before a panel of judges is extremely nerve wrecking, for me, the most difficult part is finding the perfect outfits that will make me stand out.

Lexi Esparza Miss Teen RGV 2014

Favorite color: Pink Favorite movie: Twilight Interests: Sports, music, activities. Although I enjoy many different activities, volleyball and cheer-leading are my favorite.

What is the most important thing for you when you are at the stage competing? Is to do my personal best. If I know I did my best I am proud of myself no matter the outcome. How do you feel about winning the pageant after the hard work and being nervous? After winning the Miss RGV teen 2014 pageant it was a bitter sweet feeling I felt so accomplished that it felt unreal. In one sentence, how could you describe the meaning of a beauty pageant in your life? A beauty pageant means much more than “beauty” it builds myself confidence with my height because it is one of the few places height is an asset. What is the most difficult part of being in a beauty pageant for you? Although the experience is fantastic, the hardest part of a pageant is knowing that ultimately there is only one winner.

MAKING US PROUD | MONICA VARGAS

Changing habits and people’s attitudes is a difficult thing; it takes time, consistency and patience. I have all of those and an eagerness to create change! I enjoy the challenge.

28 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 56

t is an amazing feeling to take a look back and see how far you’ve come and what you have accomplished. I see it with my clients, my business, and in my own life as well. Growing up I did not think my career would be in fitness, as a matter of fact I wanted to be an architect. I always had crazy, creative ideas for buildings. The road I took led me to a profession in health and fitness and I like to think that now I am an architect of the mind and body. What drives me every day is creating a change in the Rio Grande Valley. I dream of making a positive impact in our community; I want people to create change in their lives and to find balance through well-being and fitness. My vision began when I returned to Brownsville from California. MBR Fitness grew out of the trunk of my car, literally! I traveled to people’s homes with kettle bells, dumbbells, and medicine balls in my trunk. My first client was a friend and from there I began a list of regulars that have built my business.

A Healthy Lifestyle

MAKING US PROUD | MONICA VARGAS

I

by Monica Vargas

I lead a very fit and health oriented lifestyle, I studied fitness, health and nutrition, and I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. My focus is on helping people transform and modify themselves from the inside out. I do not sit back and tell my clients what to do, I show them. I lead by example. I work, train and create exercise and menu plans. My days begin early, usually 4:30 a.m. and end around 8:00 p.m. Once I am home I cook and prepare for the next round. Like every other person, there are moments of tiredness, but in the end it all comes down to my purpose. Changing habits and people’s attitudes is a difficult thing; it takes time, consistency and patience. I have all of those and an eagerness to create change! I enjoy the challenge. Personally, I continue to challenge myself. I recently participated in several marathons and competitions. The last competition I participated in was the Arnold Sports Festival in the Amateur Fitness division. I placed in the top ten. A large part of my job is to inspire others to change their mindsets and challenge themselves to goals they haven’t begun or think are unattainable. Physical challenges do more than change the outside; they transform the mindset and create change from inside. Once this happens, strength and confidence shine through. I witness this with many of my clients. I am inspired everyday by the dedication of my clientele, but who inspires me most are my parents. From a young age I have seen their example of hard work and dedication. My father especially has taught me to be a fighter and to take risks. Being fearless is something I transfer into MBR Fitness every day. I also must give credit to my team. I am incredibly lucky to have an amazing group of trainers at MBR. They are knowledgeable, focused and dedicated to help people from all walks of life and change and improve their quality of life and successfully reaching goals. Today I am proud to share with Celebrity Events Magazine readers the exciting news of our new facility, currently being built. I cannot wait to share the new construction with our members, to welcome new clients, and continue to give back and motivate and to improve the quality of life to the people of the Rio Grande Valley.

ON THE MENU | NY PIZZA

What Makes

NY PIZZA Exceptional?

• by Eduardo Morales (Owner of Nolita NY Pizza)

For many years this question was wandering inside my head, and it wasn’t until I lived in NY for six years that I was able to understand how it all came together to create this culinary gem. To be fair, it isn’t just NY pizza that has that distinct flavor. It’s a great deal of the pizza from the Northeast. Some of the best NY style pizzerias in the world are found in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Philadelphia among other northeastern states.

I

t all starts with the water. Water in the northeast is sweeter than the water everywhere else in the country. Many believe (including myself) that sweetness in the water gives NY pizza that distinct taste. You can have the exact same recipe for a pizza and make it in NY and it will not taste the same as one made in Texas. When you start eliminating the variables, the only logical explanation is water. Some pizzerias try to replicate the sweetness in the water by adding a bit of sugar to their recipes, but it is not the same. The sweetness in the water comes from algae in the rivers.

This has forced some NY pizzerias outside of New York to either ship their dough directly from New York; or in some extreme cases ship their water to make their own dough. Besides the water, NY pizza characterizes itself as being thin and crispy. This gets a bit confusing given that many chain pizzerias offer thin crust pizzas that are extremely thin. NY pizza is thinner than a regular chain pizza, but it is thicker than their thin pizza. It should also be crispy enough so that when you fold a slice the first layer of the crust breaks, but not the entire crust. The crispiness is really

up for debate, as many pizzas in NY will let the customer decide how crispy their pizza will be. Just know this, if you are going to Lombardi’s or to Pepe’s your pizza will be crispy, but if you are going to Artichoke or 2 Bros Pizza then your crust will be softer. We are privileged that most cities in America have at least one NY or NY-style pizzeria, and most of these are small businesses. Next time you are craving pizza make sure to try one of these places. If they really did their research and they stay true to an authentic NY pizza, I guarantee you will love it.

MAKING US PROUD | VERONIQUE MEDRANO

As a result of her independent grassroots movement in the Rio Grande Valley, her music played in over ten different on line radio stations both in the US and Mexico markets. She was featured on Domingo Live, a Corpus Christi TV Show on Chanel 3 and was the Rio Grande Valley’s first Covergirl for Chica Girl Magazine for the June and July issue of 2013 distributed in H-E-B’s across Texas, and finally reached U.S. syndication on the Tejano Gold Countdown. Veronique released her full length debut album titled “Encantadora” in December 19, 2013. The ten track project of original music has several styles from rancheras to cumbias and some added modern Tejano beats that are currently making their way into the genre. Different songs off her debut album have been featured on Super Tejano 102.1/95.3 FM and is currently making its rounds on the online radio market and their top requested charts.

Her upcoming performances include Domingo Live, and Uncorked McAllen Wine Fest. We are excited about our momentum starting the launch of the full-studio debut album ‘Encantadora’ and our goal is to have Veronique Medrano be on the nomination ballot for 2014 Tejano Music Awards as “New Female Tejano Artist of the Year.” With your support along with others you will be helping showcase a rising talent from Brownsville, Texas.

ON THE SPOTLIGHT | ELVIRA ORTIZ

Elvira S. Ortiz Cameron County’s Voice of the Future

T

he Rio Grande Valley is no stranger to the Political Scene. Elvira S. Ortiz, also, is no stranger to the political scene. She is the current front runner for the seat of District Clerk of Cameron County. Her along with one of her competitors is getting ready to run once more at the Cameron County run-off election that takes place later in the month of May. Elvira S. Ortiz began her career working for Cameron County at an early age through a work study program that was being offered at Brownsville High School. Her first job at the Courthouse was working for now Senator Eddie Lucio whom at the time was the County Treasurer. She worked for that particular office for three and a half years then decided to work for the District Clerks’ office in 1975 where she’s been at ever since. In 1980 a new district clerk was elected and a year later she became the chief deputy a position she has held since 1981. I sat down with Mrs. Ortiz because I wanted to get some insight as to what the primary functions of the District Clerks’ office are. This is what she said, “The District Clerk is a “Custodian of Records,” we have many responsibilities to the residents of Cameron County” is what she said. The District Clerks office is responsible for sending out the Jury notices, they handle all Indictments, Warrants both Civil and Criminal, ranging from Child Support cases, divorces, and all

the way to United States Passports. One can say that the District Clerks Office has a wide variety of responsibilities and duties to the residents of Cameron County and Elvira Ortiz has been a major part in doing those duties for most of her adult life. “She loves her job!” said by her husband Roger Ortiz. Mr. Ortiz solidified that his wife spends more time at work than she does at home because she honestly cares about what she does. Mrs. Elvira Ortiz met her husband at the age of sixteen. She married Rogelio Ortiz at the age of twenty one and it was almost two years later, gave birth to a son, who was named Rogelio, after his father. Four years after the birth of their first son, Mr. and Mrs. Ortiz had their second son named Orlando and then five years after that their third and final child, a daughter, named Claudia. Elvira Ortiz believes that family is the core of ones foundation. She works hard to provide for her family and instill the same values she herself has. Her children have all gone off to become productive members of society. Rogelio is a prominent attorney, Orlando, a Civil Engineer and Claudia is a Yale graduate and works for CASA. This is proof of how dedicated Elvira Ortiz is to family values. Elvira Ortiz has dedicated her whole life to the residents of Cameron County and the responsibilities of the District Clerks’ Office.

District Clerks Office has a wide variety of responsibilities and duties to the residents of Cameron County.

She has held the position of the Chief Deputy for that office for over thirty years. Amidst all of the corruption lately in the Rio Grande Valley it is nice to know that there still remains a constant public figure that residents of Cameron County can still rely on.

Bayou Bend

COLLECTION & GARDENS Bubbly on the bend

Bayou Bend Collection & Gardens A dazzling, magical place that will capture the moment forever....One of the most Beautiful, Historical Secret Gardens in the City of Houston where you can easily get lost in time. According to the Museum of Fine Arts of Houston, The Bayou Bend Collection and Garden is the former home of Miss Ima Hogg, Texas philanthropist and art collector. Today it serves as a showcase for the collection she founded of early American decorative arts and paintings dating between 1620 and 1876. This house was completed in 1928 and was originally intended as a home for Ima Hogg and two of her brothers, Will and Mike. As it happened, Mike Hogg married and Will Hogg died shortly after the house was finished. Bayou Bend then became their sister’s home and project. In 1957, Miss Hogg gave the house and collection to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. She lived in the house until 1965 and continued to take a lively interest in Bayou Bend until her death. Many visitors wonder whether the house has been left as it was when Miss Hogg lived here. In fact, she oversaw the transition of her home into a museum. The rooms are arranged to showcase the collection and in most cases look quite different than they did when Miss Hogg was in residence.

HOUSTON Saul Perez Photographer

Arts Collection

Saul Perez is a Houston area photographer who specializes in capturing ordinary life on camera and transforming it into extraordinary moments on print. The eighth child born to immigrant parents in Bakersfield, CA, Saul’s life was one of limited resources. Moving to different cities throughout his childhood, he quickly learned to appreciate his surroundings and never take anything for granted. He became an expert in remembering people, places, objects and scents all with the personal stamp unique to that moment in time. With an eye for detail and an aptitude to find beauty amongst the most unadorned objects, Saul’s passion for photography was born before he even knew it. With a vision to capture the very essence of time, Saul’s work is mainly centered on still life photography. He enjoys the challenge this poses but more importantly the rewards of capturing the vibrancy of everyday life encapsulated in a single frame.

Stephen Hunt Physician & Artist

Although I am a physician by trade and spend most of my time practicing the art of medicine, one of the things I find the most enjoyment in is the creativity and art of fabrication. I love to work in a variety of mediums, and I get a great feeling of accomplishment when I complete a piece or project, and enjoy approaching problems from unique angles and finding my own solutions. When approaching a piece, I sometimes choose to be intentionally more complex and other times focus on simplicity. This “directionality” is dependent upon my mood and influences at the time. I find architectural, visual, and aesthetic beauty within nature and also in everyday items that many pass by. These elements tend to be found in, and/or drive my work. Many times everyday objects are beautiful on their own, but sometimes these objects do not take on this beauty until they have years of weathering, patina, and wear. Although I sometimes facilitate the patina and wear on some of my pieces though water, fire, or other techniques, I believe there is no substitute for the abuse that age, repeat use, and the elements can have on an object. My works are not appealing to everyone and that’s okay, but I hope the pieces help people to see things around them from a different perspective. And for those who display my work, I hope the pieces complement the character, ambiance, and mystique of their surroundings, and inspire conversation. Lastly, I hope my pieces say something about the individual who chooses the piece. I believe it points to the individual’s ability to appreciate things that others do not, to see things from a unique perspective, and to celebrate overlooked beauty.
