LOS FRESNOS ASTROS The LF Astros teams included: Caylee Cavazos, DeMarkus Arellano, Aleck Sanchez, Anthony Martinez, Devin Garcia, CJ Walsdorf, Abraham Ethan Martinez, Valerie Gaytan, Rebekah Perales, Ramiro Luna, AJ Rocha and Sylvia Burlingame. The coaching staff included: Head Coach Esteban Sanchez, Assistant Coaches Clarissa Cavazos, David Cavazos, Danny Burlingame, and Billy Walsdorf. The LF Astros have been a part of the Brownsville Wild Pitch League for three seasons. Coach Esteban Sanchez began his T-Ball team coaching in the 4U division in which the ages range from three to four years old. The LF Astros did amazingly well receiving 2nd place overall for the 2013 summer season. As the LF Astros continue to develop and grow, they have moved up to 6U (five and six years of age) division for their third season.
The winning team takes the trophy home! • Esteban Sanchez
Who are we?!” Coach Esteban asked. “Astros!” The team replies. After a two day tournament, they won first place in a championship game. The LF Astros were so happy and eager to receive their first championship ring. As each player received their ring, every single face had a winning smile. It was a great feeling of accomplishment for each player as well as coaches. All the hard work,

practice, and sportsmanship had finally paid off. The LF Astros originated from Los Fresnos Pony league in the spring season of 2013. Although not all players continued with the team, we did have a few players who were anxious to keep it going. Soon after, Coach Esteban took the head coach responsibility and went on to search for more enthusiastic children to help complete the team.
The LF Astros look forward to going to practice, learning new skills, making new friends, and having fun. This is all possible with the support of their coaches and parents. Come game time the LF Astros remain disciplined, strong and united.

GO GREEN
celebrate mother nature
Take a stand and do your part! • Jessica Perales
T
he world today is made up of energetic cities, traversed by high-speed automobiles and jet planes, full of unlimited technology, booming with big business, and buzzing with endless opportunities. All this hustle and bustle of the modern world can make it easy to forget about the world of exotic plants and majestic animals and just how quickly it is all deteriorating. It is our duty to protect and restore these more secluded parts of the world. Not too long ago, Gaylord Nelson also felt troubled and defeated. It seemed to him that not too many people really cared about the planet and what it had to offer. So he made it his personal mission to take a stand on environmental problems and make them important issues in politics. His journey was definitely not easy and at times he felt ready to give up. In the summer of 1969, during his tour, he came up with the idea of Earth Day and extended an invitation to his audience. On April 22, 1970, he organized a nationwide grassroots demonstration that attracted over 20 million demonstrators. This first Earth Day was what really sparked interest and spread the word. Nearly a year later, on March 21, Earth Day was proclaimed an official international holiday. Nelson’s story supports the idea that anyone can make a difference, no matter how big or small their
dreams. Now on April 22, 2014 is your chance to take a stand and do your part to help our environment! Here are some easy ways to make a difference in your community:
1. COMPOST. Fruits and veggies that stayed in the fridge for too long aren’t good to eat, but can actually improve the quality of soil. Make your own compost by cutting some air holes in a large plastic bin and dispose of rotten ingredients. Within a few months you’ll have enough rich soil to start your own backyard garden. 2. PLANT TREES. Get to the root of it all! Planting trees benefits the world in several ways, such as keeping us cool, providing food, and removing pollutants from the ozone. 3. TURN OFF THE LIGHTS. Too often we forget to turn off the lights before leaving a room. During the daytime and when a room is not in use, make sure to shut the lights off. This simple action can make a world of a difference. You can even try switching to compact fluorescent bulbs that use 75 percent less electricity.

t the tender age of 9 years old, Jizelle Dominguez has already won the crown of “Miss Junior Pre-Teen” in Houston, TX. This vibrant young lady is involved in a multitude of activities such as swimming, gymnastics, fashion, ballet and hair design.

Her interest in pageants is growing, especially since her first crown was based on focusing on her bubbly personality and natural beauty. The children weren’t pressured into wearing excessive makeup, false eyelashes and a can full of hairspray. Pageants are primarily meant to aid in graceful-
ness, poise and public speaking, but stereotypically it has become a nest for catty, superficial women. Consequently, Jizelle’s family was hesitant at first to accept her participation in a pageant, but when it was explained to the family that the girls were judged on charisma, they were more approving. Jizelle states, “The pageant was really hard because I had to be in front of a lot of people, but it’s almost like I already had experience because I did recitals for ballet.” Jizelle’s mother allowed her daughter Continued on page 13
to make a choice on whether or not she wanted to participate in a pageant, and her family has supported her extra-curricular activities 100%. Jizelle also won runner up for “Most Photogenic.” She loves the ability to be herself, and she is not only Ms. Congeniality so to speak, but is smart as a whip.
g “Little
irls have a m
agic of their own, we just help you br ing it ou t.”
She needs to know that it’s not all about the glitz. Every year since kindergarten, she has earned the honor roll and excels academically in her classes. Her favorite subject is math. All of her teachers find her to be very likeable and somewhat of a social butterfly. Her mother states “she is such a sweet girl” and Jizelle definitely has the dazzling personality that won over the judges. Her next challenge is to compete in two more pageants in 2014 before traveling to Florida for Nationals; which takes place in 2015. Jizelle will soon be doing charity work for children such as “Toys for Tots” and possibly some volunteering at children’s hospitals. “She needs to know that it’s not all about the glitz.” Says mom. Not only is she talented in several things, she is also a business woman in the making. She has operated lemonade stands, baked goods sales (where she only charged the men) and carwashes to make extra money, as well as doing her daily chores around the house. In the future, she plans on being on the Disney channel. She expresses how she runs to the TV after she finishes her work to watch Disney, and her mother agrees that her personality would land her a role on the big screen. Jizelle is a fun-loving girl with an infectious smile and a joyous spirit who has a bright future ahead. Best wishes on your journey!

CELEBRITY KID Although Trent is seemingly shy towards adults, he is still comfortable around children his age. When going out to eat, his parents let him order his own food so that he could get used to projecting his voice, and build his confidence. He is in the Gifted and Talented program at his elementary school, which has allowed him to learn at a faster pace, but socially it has been a challenge. Trent had to learn patience in class so that his classmates could learn at their own pace. All while maintaining a 4.0, he is very productive at home and involved in his twin baby sisters’ lives. His sisters have also assisted him with being more stoic and empathetic. His parents stated that they refuse to speak baby talk to their children when they’re young--they want to speak to them maturely so that the kids could grow up pronouncing words properly and to speak clearly. This tactic has allowed Trent and his sisters to grasp the English language and strengthen their minds. Trent is undoubtedly very boyish, and he sometimes indulges in a little harmless mischief, but one thing he loves to do is learn.

eet Trenton, he is an 8 year old genius in the making! Although he is only in the 3rd grade, he is already reading on a 5th grade level. His mother states “We didn’t want him to be skipped up a grade because he’s still 8!” They encouraged him to mature first because he’s still a young boy. Reading is his strongest subject, but he loves science and tends to experiment and create projects just for fun. He wins awards each year for the Honor Roll, and also a number of awards

for the accelerated learning program he is in. His parents are very proud of him, and his teachers are especially impressed with how quickly he absorbs information, but they often have a hard time keeping him occupied. Trenton often asks questions, and his parents willingly answer them with intentions of teaching him something new. As his parents explained, they could give him the definition of an unfamiliar word and he would use it in a sentence shortly after with correct use.
Trent is also very athletic; playing for a Christian based baseball team, and even football for his little league team. He has joined the school choir, and has already expressed his goals for high school and where he may want to attend college. Most kids don’t think about college until their junior year in high school. Even though this brilliant child has accomplished a long list of things academically, he is still enjoying being an everyday kid: He gets dirty, plays sports, and entertains his family. After speaking with Trenton’s mother, there is no doubt that the main reason her son is doing so well is because she and his father interact with him and make learning interesting. Playing video games is also a hobby for Trent, but he instead plays the brain teasing games that studies show increases mental sharpness. At an early age Trenton appreciates the gift of knowledge, and acquiring as much of it as possible. Education is an essential factor for each child, and it’s the one asset that no one can take away. Keep up the good work Trenton!

LOCAL HERO never does. That’s what inspired me to give back to my community and to bring smiles to the children. IS WRESTLING A PART OF THE FUNDRAISERS YOU HOST?
Yes, wrestling is a big part of all my fundraisers. I thank God that through wrestling I can help my community. WHAT’S THE PROCESS OF OBTAINING THE TOY WRESTLING RINGS YOU GIVE TO THE KIDS?
I build the wrestling rings myself and give them away to children at events. I do this because I don’t want them to go through what I did when I was a child. WHAT SORT OF ACTIVITIES DO YOU CONTRIBUTE WITH THE SCHOOLS?
I’m very happy to be a motivator speaker for “Say NO to Drugs” and “STARR Test” rallies at BISD schools. A special thank you to Mr. Moreno, Victoria Heights Elementary Principal. He was the first principal that invited me to his school. I also want to thank Christina Bridgewater, former principal of Egly Elementary, for always supporting and believing in me. MANY OF THE CHILDREN SEE YOU AS A ROLE MODEL, IS THERE ANY ADVICE YOU WOULD LIKE TO GIVE THEM?
How one man set out to inspire children in the community with wrestling. • Jessica Alanis WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL WRESTLER?
I have loved wrestling all my life, but what motivated me was an incident that happened in a classroom I was working in. There was a child crying because he wasn’t able to go to a wrestling event due to his parents not having enough money. This really hit home because it reminded me of my childhood. I said to myself that I’m going to become a wrestler and start hosting local events for the kids to attend. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WRESTLING MATCH THAT YOU’VE BEEN IN?
My favorite wrestling match was the first match I had, which was on June 29th, 2009. I was up against Viento Negro. I was so nervous and over 500 people showed up. I didn’t want to come out, I was too shy, but I thank God that I did.
22
| www.celebritykidsmagazine.com | Issue 49
WHAT SKILLS DO YOU ADAPT TO IN THE WRESTLING RING?
The skills I bring are communication with the fans, wrestling like Lucha Americana, and my signature move “The Spear.” WHO WERE YOUR FAVORITE WRESTLERS GROWING UP?
One of my heroes is Santo, el Enmascarado de Plata. I just loved his mask and his moves. My other favorite wrestler is Gino Hernandez, the Handsome Half-breed. He is what inspires my “bad boy” side in wrestling. May both wrestlers rest in peace. WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO START CONTRIBUTING TO THE COMMUNITY?
I was poor growing up and I know how hard it is to wake up with no presents under the Christmas tree or to wait up for Santa Claus to come to your house, but he
I advise children to always respect their parents. Stay away from drugs and stay out of trouble. Believe in yourself and the most important thing is to stay in school and get an education. COULD YOU STILL SEE YOURSELF REPRESENTING FUERZA LUCHA LIBRE MEXICANA IN 10 YEARS?
Yes! I would love to be part of this for many more years to come. I pray to my Lord Jesus Christ to continue giving me the strength in bringing happiness to the children. I would like to give a big thank you to Celebrity Kids magazine for giving me the opportunity to let people know a little more about myself, El Luchador from Brownsville, “EL CARPINTERO”(bad boy). God bless you all.

What advice would you give to 5th graders before going into middle school?
B
eing in Elementary school holds fond memories (if any of us can remember). Walking in a line to go to lunch, recess, show and tell, naptime and of course making beautiful art (well at least we thought it was beautiful.) But, once you transition from Elementary School to Middle School, it becomes a less exciting experience. Although being promoted to a higher grade is refreshing, a lot of kids found it scary and rather intimidating. For the 5th graders anticipating middle school, we interviewed a handful of kids that can give honest and pristine advice about what to expect when leaving Elementary School. YOU’RE NOT THE OLDEST NOW “The advice I would give to 5th graders that are about to be 6th graders is to be aware of older kids. You know how big they are, they think they are the boss of the whole school. Y’all are probably like that now because you all are the oldest. Make sure you choose the right friends, they will turn on you really fast. Always stay focused. You don’t ever want to be in the 6th grade again, everyone will make fun of you. You always want to go for the best and try to make straight A’s. GOOD LUCK CLASS OF 2021!” - Chariah Mabry
ORGANIZATION IS KEY “Once you get into middle school, it will get very busy. Since you have 7-8 periods, you will need to be organized. Organization is the biggest part of middle school in my opinion. When you get into middle school you will have tons of fun as long as your organization is perfect because teachers count on you having your assignment on time. Once you get organization down, you should have the time of your life.” - Vivian Huynh JUST BE YOURSELF “When you get into 6th grade be yourself, don’t try to fit in. The people you are trying to be like might do bad things, and they might try to pressure you into skipping class and ditching school-and if you do, you can get suspended so I advise you to be yourself no matter what people say.” - Gaby Cartegina USE GOOD TO GET THROUGH “Never let a bully bring you down, you’ll have to bring the bully down with kindness. Maybe you’ll find a new friend.” - Sugero Hernandez Continued on page 31

Continued from Page28 IT’S NOT SO SCARY “I would tell 5th graders that it’s not as scary as it seems. Also, you will be able to get to all of your classes on time so don’t worry too much. Locker combinations are also easy to remember, so don’t freak out.” - Amber Ayub

FOCUS ON PROJECTS “I suggest that 5th graders transitioning to middle school should always plan out long term projects, don’t procrastinate and stay organized.” - Reagan Sanders

for parents MEET YOUR CHILD’S ADVISOR Many middle schools assign an advisor, or counselor, to every student (or one for the entire grade). That person, who should be steeped in the developmental needs of early adolescence, acts as mentor, troubleshooter, and advocate. REMAIN APPROACHABLE Encourage your child to open up about what’s going on in school — but don’t interrogate, and give advice only when asked. Your goal is to keep her talking so she realizes she can count on you. BOLSTER SOCIAL SKILLS If your child says they have no friends, help them find new ways to get to know classmates better. Replace “No one likes me” with “I’ll be a better listener” or “I’ll invite someone to the basketball game this weekend.” Some children miss social cues and could benefit from professional counseling to become more aware of the way their words and behavior affect others.

CELEBRITY KID
Love Miracle There are stories of lives that face great obstacles, but love and a zest for life are essential factors to face any challenge. April 2005, a month that shook the world with the news that Pope John II had died and my mommy and I learned this at the hospital. It was very difficult for her, we had already been there for a month. She was pregnant with me but at 3 months we started to feel that something was not right and suddenly “the water broke.” I felt very weak and didn´t know what was happening but my mommy quickly went to the doctor and to our surprise they didn´t let us leave. We were un-
der much intensive care to ensure a positive outcome. She couldn´t move and did everything the doctors asked of her, I kept hearing her voice telling me again and again “Everything will be fine.” The days passed but she increasingly worsened, she couldn´t breathe and her lungs were retaining fluid. One night the doctor came in and told my mommy that she needed emergency surgery because she could have a heart attack. I remember we were very scared. My mommy prayed and asked John Paul II for things to go well. She promised that if I lived she would name me after him in gratitude. And without knowing what was going to happen, we entered the surgery room. For more pictures of this event, visit us at celebritykidsmagazine.com

I was born after a few hours and weighed less than 1 pound. My mommy was slowly recovering. But I didn´t know what was happening to me. I was alone, without her. I had many tubes connected to my fragile, tiny body and I couldn´t see anything. I was blindfolded. I felt sad for not being with her. My grandparents always visited me. Then one day I heard her voice, there she was… My mommy! She was with me, telling me beautiful things that made my heart beat, I was very happy to know she was ok! Every moment she was allowed to be with me, she was there. The first day she took me in her arms I wanted to hug her, but I couldn´t, only in my mind I could make that happen. A few days later, I began to worry, the doctors and nurses were checking me and I realized that something was happening. I had suffered a brain hemorrhage. The bleeding slowly invaded my nose, mouth, and ears. The doctors recommended I be taken off life support. I was suffering so much and wasn´t going to survive, but if I did, the hemorrhage had its consequences. I would not be able to walk, see, nor speak. They insisted over and over again that my mommy authorize them to disconnect me, but all her love for me prevented her from taking that step. She couldn´t imagine us not being together. With deep sadness she cried and begged the doctors not to disconnect me, but my little heart was weaker and there was nothing more to do. I remember days before, she took a picture of the Pope and put it in my crib and with great faith she asked them to please give me a chance to live. Her pleas before the doctor went unheard and I was taken off life support. The doctor left to prepare the paperwork. Maybe 5 minutes had gone by and my mommy again asked the nurse to please re-connect me. With some difficulties, but touched by my mommy she agreed. All the while you hear my mommy´s prayers begging for my life. I couldn´t leave her like that, I wanted to be with her and so I fought against death. The beats of my heart were heard again on those machines, my heart rate was slowly restored. No one could believe it. I was back! Quickly they took my vitals. The doctor was shocked. It was a Love Miracle. Days passed and each time I felt a little better. I had daily visits from my mommy and grandparents. I spent 3 months undergoing great care. One day I felt the great happiness that filled my mommy because she could finally take me home. Everything was perfectly prepared; the doctor´s instructions were followed to the dot. I left with oxygen and other equipment to monitor my little heart. There were many people awaiting my arrival, but one was special. There she was, Paulina, my sister. We were meeting for the first time, but mommy would always talk to me about her. Despite the medical diagnoses that remained in my chart I put all my effort to live as best as possible and I succeeded!
“
Thanks to the dedication and the love of my Mom and Paulina who have helped me overcome any obstacle.
”
They said I wouldn´t be able to walk and I did! I began to take my first steps at the age of 3. I am now 9 years old and I run and play with my friends They said I wouldn´t be able to talk and I achieved that too! I was 3 when my family heard my first words. Thanks to the dedication and the love that I have received from my mommy and Paulina, who helped me overcome any obstacle, I´m like the other kids. I go to school, I have friends, I do my homework, I play and I keep fighting everyday to get ahead. I attend my physical, occupational and speech therapies, which are my strong support to improve on a daily basis. My dream is to become a lawyer so I can help people. I am Karol Joseph, like the Pope, and thanks to this miracle of life I carry his name. Issue 49 | www.celebritykidsmagazine.com | 33

Ask the Expert Q: Who can benefit from taking vocal lessons?
Vocal Coach
A: Anyone of any age who shares the love of music and would like to experience the joys of singing can benefit from taking voice lessons. Younger students voices are worked with delicately, as they are still maturing, naturally. However, it is necessary to acquire proper ear training and basic music knowledge at an early age in order to develop proper singing well into adulthood. The voice lessons I teach are tailored to the individual student based on their reason for taking voice lessons. A typical lesson will focus on vocal technique, vocal health, as well as acquiring the knowledge of basic music theory and sight-singing necessary for any educated singer/musician.
