GEMINI (MAY 22-JUNE 21) Be tactful if you see flaws in someone else’s work. You have to know what your boss wants if you expect to do your job correctly. You can enjoy entertainment if you join in and follow the crowd for a change. You can come into money; however, perhaps not under the best circumstances.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 21 -FEB. 19) Be careful that you don’t overextend yourself. Uncertainty regarding your direction is likely. Don’t overextend your self in order to add luxury items to your entertainment center. Get the whole family involved in a worthwhile cause or cultural event.

TAURUS (APR. 21- MAY 21) Get busy making those changes to your home. Try not to be too lavish with your lover. Don’t bother getting even; they’ll make themselves look bad. Partnerships will be successful.

SCORPIO(OCT. 24 - NOV. 22) Some time spent with that special someone should be your intent. Don’t overextend your self in order to add luxury items to your entertainment center. You may find that female colleagues will be more help than you anticipated. You will have to put those you live with in their place.

PISCES(FEB. 20-MAR. 20) You will have original ideas for ways to make extra money. Take your time be fore making personal decisions. Be tolerant, but don’t let any one take you for granted. Financial difficulties may be worrying you.

VIRGO(AUG. 23 -SEPT. 23) Strength will come from your ability to overtake just about any one. Do not reveal personal information to those you feel may be untrustworthy. Your attitude is changing rapidly and your plate is overloaded. Don’t let your family put demands on you.

14 _Celebritynights.com_October/November 2012

LEO(JULY 23-AUG 22) Avoid letting family get involved in your personal life. Try to have patience and refrain from being judgmental. Depression may be likely if you’re away from home. You will be overly sensitive this week.

SAGITTARIUS(NOV. 23 -DEC. 21) If you have an issue with someone in particular, bring it up to that person directly. This isn’t a good time to gossip. Maintaining trust is extremely important right now. This attitude will open many doors for you. Believe that the more you love others, the more love will be returned.

CANCER(JUNE 22-JULY 22) You have bent over backward trying to help them and now it’s time to let them stand on their own two feet. Your childlike quality may get you into big trouble this week if you neglect your responsibilities. Do you really want to start something with someone you can’t reason with?

LIBRA(SEPT. 24 -OCT. 23) Get help setting up a reasonable budget. Look into ways of making extra cash. Set a limit on the amount you’re willing to spend, and be sure to stick to it. Your tendency to vacillate will drive everyone crazy. Use discretion, especially if involved with someone from work.

CAPRICORN(DEC 22.- JAN. 20) Don’t hesitate to look for alternatives that will enable you to raise the kind of donations you need to do the job right. You may experience financial loss if you don’t use good judgment. Someone you least expect may not have your best interests at heart. You are best to tuck your money away.

ARIES (JAN. 21 -FEB. 19) A friendship might suffer if money becomes an issue. Losses are likely if you get involved with uncertain individuals. You’ll feel much better when your slate is clean again. Don’t let others make you feel guilty or insecure.

FOOD & DINING

f you were a fan of Mizu before, you will looooove it now. A recent bar fire gave them an opportunity to remodel, opening the place up and making it a little lighter and brighter. The same stellar view is in place, so that just leaves the question of how is the food? Ethereal is the short answer; get ready for the long. We were invited for a special re-opening dinner to check out the new menu; it delivers and then some. to the right sliced steak, with garlic mashed potatoes & steamed vegetables.

Aah, beef! Sliced steak, perfectly cooked, served with garlic mashed potatoes whipped into a creamy frenzy, alongside roasted veggies in (more!) bacon vinaigrette.

Pizza Cave 110 HWY 290 W Dripping Springs, TX

The menu also offers pastas, subs, salads, beer and wine. Pizzas are available in a specialty pie, like the Veggie Loaded, left, or you can build your own. A nice addition to the Drippin’ landscape. Bada bing! Time was, if you craved a real New York-style pizza around these parts? Fuhgeddaboudit. That is changing, thanks to authentic joints like the new Pizza Cave. The brick-lined, 600-degree oven isn’t just NY-style, it’s imported from New York. They make their own dough fresh every day, using it in a variety of thin-crust pizzas and calzones. Sauces are made inhouse, too. One of the owners is from Joisey, and they really worked hard on the authenticity of the recipes.

Mel’s Meals

It turns out there is such a thing as takeout that’s healthy. 2422 Ranch Road 620 South, Austin, Texas 78738

It’s right here at Mel’s. Everyday, they cook up over 70 breakfast, lunch and dinner items (plus desserts and snacks), and have them ready to go in the refrigerator cases here. From banana pancakes and huevos rancheros to Cuban beef and apricot-stuffed pork to chocolate-chip cookies and flourless chocolate cake, it’s here. Check out to the right for lots of new menu items, like this beautiful breakfast burrito.

DAYGLOW: Life in Color Summer Tour “The World’s Largest Paint Party” by Frank Stevenson

Deemed “The World’s Largest Paint Party,” we had high hopes going into this party...and our hopes were definitely satisfied.

I didn’t know what to expect when arriving at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas to attend Dayglow. I’ve been to my fair share of EDM concerts, but this show definitely raised the bar for what’s expected for all future shows I attend.

Things were pretty chill at first, the starter DJ’s were getting the show started with a very anticipated countdown on the big screen of when the paint party would begin. The build up was great, the crowd cheering, screaming and dancing, you couldn’t have asked for a better, more upbeat, crowd. The clock was running out and everyone started cheering. The lights and laser show was going insane, everyone jumping up and down cheering and then the clock 26 _Celebritynights.com_October/November 2012

hit zero. The makeshift cannons on the front of the stage began shooting out the gallons of paint into the crowd and people in the audience, with their bottles of paint, started squeezing and throwing the paint all around. Having been to these types of concerts, I can definitely say the paint adds to the great experience of EDM concerts.

There is a sense of freedom you feel when attending these kinds of concerts and Dayglow made you feel as free as can be. Endless dancing, music, paint and fun made an experience you won’t be able to find anywhere else. If you ever have the chance to check out Dayglow when they throw one near you, I would highly recommend it. It is an experience you won’t regret and something you will want to do over and over.

H

ow did you end up where you are today? When I was very young I sat on my mother’s leg while she sat at the piano and together we sang songs while she played the piano. Little did I know that years later I would become such a music enthusiast and would be where I am today. Those memories I have with my mom I will never forget and it shows through my blood line that music is and will always be in our veins. When I was 18 and a -senior at McNeil High School in Round Rock, I joined a cover band as the lead singer. We only played in our garages, a few parties and a couple shows at the school. It was fun but I had a life changing experience that same year when I went to my first rave. That is a whole other story but the experience I had took me to a place that I knew NOTHING about. I had never heard these sounds, never seen these crowds, these faces, the costumes, the dancing, what’s a DJ, what is techno, what the hell is going on here. All these things went through my head but I was completely in love with ALL OF IT and I was instantly a fan of what is now known as EDM. At age 21, I met my now mentor and best friend Lance Cashion who at the time was running his production company and collective of DJ’s known as Slow Motion Music. I started off as Lance’s right hand man, passing out flyers on cars, collecting emails at his shows, promoting at other events and pretty much doing whatever I could to be involved with this crew of DJ’s. It was all worth every second and I gained so much knowledge and to this day still use much of those basic fundamentals of the promotions game.By this time I had started promoting my own nights and drawing large numbers just off my DJ friends that would rotate through to play. Finally one day I decided that my friends were no longer playing the stuff that I wanted to hear so I decided to start buying records and DJ’ing myself. I taught myself with some pointers from my older buddies but pretty much learned it all on my own. The biggest thing that I found in DJ’ing is that the tracks you play is what makes a DJ, a monkey can DJ but if you don’t play good tracks you’re doomed. Now at 34 years old and almost 15 years in this business and this music scene I am at an all time high. I am working with the top promoters in the nation here in Austin copromoting shows with all of them. I am also performing as the opening DJ for almost every A-list DJ that comes through Austin. I am DJ’ing on a regular basis with 4 monthly parties here in Austin that are all very successful nights. I am constantly building new relationships and partnerships with many different elements of the music business. I am constantly building the “Toddy B” brand by doing everything from DJ’ing, to hosting radio shows, running record labels, a monthly podcast, to DJ’ing festivals, and simply doing way more than I ever expected and loving every second of it. What keeps you motivated everyday to do what you do? There are many things that keep me motivated and keep my drive alive in this business. First and fore-

48 _Celebritynights.com_October/November 2012

-most is the music, hands down. I eat, sleep, breathe and sweat this music! I live for the next show, the next track, the next big gig, the next festival, the next artist that is going to come and blow us all away. The new generation of music producers that are coming out of high school and now touring the globe doing what we all want to do which is play our music!

and learned so much from them and still use many things they taught me as a child even to this day. My dad is the funniest guy I know, the coolest dad I have ever met and most importantly he’s my best friend. My mom is as classy as they come, such a sweet heart, truly the most caring mother I have ever seen and as well my best friend. My parents are rad!

There are def times when things are so slammed and I need 5 Toddy B’s to get everything done, but I always seem to find that balance and get the job done. I am a work horse and have had 4 jobs for over 10 years now and still get enough rest and of course time to be social within all that. I work to make this scene better and to make more people join us in this scene and to watch it grow and know that I contributed to that growth. This is all motivation for me and when I see the smiles at the end of the night after a great party, that is what does it for me that is motivating!!

What is your current state of mind?

How do you feel about your accomplishments? I am so humbled by the amount of support that I have gotten from my family, friends and fans over the years. I started DJ’ing simply as a hobby because I was such an uber fan of the music and now I have been voted “BEST DJ” by the Austin Chronicle and the people of Austin 4 years in a row, 2008-2011. That is something that I never thought would have happened as the generation of DJ’s before me were so amazing and always were such great people. I just tried to follow what they taught me and now I try to teach to the younger generation what I learned to make them the best they can be as well. I am a huge fan of passing the torch and giving the new guys a chance as well as finding undiscovered talent. I like making them shine and show them what it feels like to play a sold out show of 3,000 in your home town. I have been lucky enough to have many of those moments and those moments make me proud and make me want to keep moving forward and playing great music for old and new fans. One of my goals is to play Austin City Limits music festival here in my home town in front of my home crowd, that would be an amazing accomplishment. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Perfect happiness to me is staying healthy, keeping a great and strong relationship with my family and friends as well as being a great boyfriend. I am a happy person and even when times are tough I always seem to look on the bright side of things and make almost every situation a positive one. Another form of perfect happiness is me in my studio listening to music, preparing for sets, learning to make music and being completely shut off from everything. My life is so GO GO GO that the time that I do get to dedicate towards music is perfect happiness! Which living person do you admire the most? Not one person but 2, my parents! My mom and dad provided me with everything that a child could

I am very focused and very motivated. I have so much going on at all times that I must remain focused and organized and stay on top of things. My girlfriend will say I have the attention span of a nat but I just call it multitasking. Did you face any challenges before landing at this threshold in life where you enjoy the status that you are in right now? I will say that over the years I have hit some bumps in the road and run into some hurdles but like anything in life you learn to get around them or work through them. You live and learn and that’s one thing that I can say that I have done, I have done a lot and seen a lot and have learned from others mistakes as well as my own. However it’s how you bounce back that matters, I bounce back stronger and wiser and ready for the next obstacle. Life has them but being prepared always makes things smoother. Who are your favorite characters in history? Pele’, John Digweed, Jim Carrey, Cheech and Chong, Your favorite virtue? Honesty. What is your motto? “Durty beats sounds better when you are making a DURTY face!” Lance Cashion “Work hard play harder” “Don’t feed the Toddy!” “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” What car do you drive? 2009 Cadillac SRX What are your favorite foods? Lately it’s anything on the paleolithic diet that my girlfriend Kimmy cooks for me. She is amazing in the kitchen and I am a very spoiled man for the way she treats me! I am very grateful and thankful to have her in my life. I love her so much! Which is your favorite movie? Dazed and Confused, Dumb and Dumber Where do you like to go eat in Austin? Shady Grove What is your theory on life? My theory on life is to be happy and to take care of yourself so that you can stay on this earth as long as possible. I love to love, show love, be loved, spread love and I have made it a part of my life. I am so grateful to be alive and healthy and have the things that I have and be surrounded by the people that I am surrounded by. Life is awesome! Đ

Infinity Overhead Another hit from Minus The Bear

by Stephen Araiza

If you have never heard of Minus the Bear before, then you are truly missing out on a band that has shown time and again that rock is still alive and prominent. Minus the Bear has been around since 2001 and has since released five albums. Each album brings a sound of its own with familiar and unique melodies that are pristine in their own right. Their most recent album Infinity Overhead is an instant hit which brings the bands sound back to more familiar territory to the band and their fans. In Omni, Minus the Bears last album, they took a very different route from their normal sound. With the addition of the omnichord, Omni definitely brought a newer, sexier sound to the album. Infinity Overhead has brought the band back to their comfort zone. You’re not going to hear much sex-appeal in their newest album but you will hear the likes of all their previous albums.

52 _Celebritynights.com_October/November 2012

You can see a maturity achieved throughout the years of Minus the Bear, you can hear it in both the lyrics and rythms the band produces. The songs have become more dark and soft sounding yet still sounding beautiful at the same time. Towards the end of the album, they go into a more heavier rock sound, but at the same time keeping that smooth sound in the beginning. Overall the album produces a great mix of songs that doesn’t completely stick to one specific style, and continues to show a little experimentation that we are familiar with from Minus the Bear. Seeing how Infinity Overhead was produced by the former keyboardist Matt Bayles, there was a bit more control of how the album would sound. With having an outside producer with Omni, the band had to go out of their comfort zone with that album and with having Matt Bayle this time around, it brought the band back into that original sound we fell in love with from the start.

Minus the Bear has already begun touring with the new album and will make four stops in Texas, which will include the great cities of Lubbock, Dallas, Houston and Austin. We will be there to watch them play on the orange stage at Austins Fun Fun Fun Festival taking place November 2nd through the 4th. With only a 45 minute set to play, we’re sure they wont fail to impress their fans in Austin. Overall, we are very pleased with how Infinity Overhead sounds and feels. I missed this side of Minus the Bear that we haven’t seen since Planet of Ice (their 3rd album). Whether you are a new fan or old fan of Minus the Bear, Infinity Overhead is a must have and you will not be disappointed by what you hear. They truly made another amazing album that has produced more great songs I can add to my Minus the Bear playlist and listen to over and over no matter what the mood. Check out our interview with Erin Tate from Minus the Bear on the next page!

An Interview

Minus the Bear

with Erin Tate

First of all, great job on the new album, it came out amazing. Yeah, we are very proud of it. You guys ready to get back on tour again with the new album? We left a week from yesterday, we’ve been away for six days. How’s it going so far? Good, the sounds great, we are all psyched. We’re pretty excited that you’re coming back to Austin to play at the Fun Fun Fun Festival, you guys looking forward to that? Yeah, it will be my birthday when we play. Do you like playing at festivals rather than regular venues? Yeah, it’s different, it’s fun to play festivals because you get to play in front of other peoples crowds but headlining is a little more fun cause you kinda get to play in front of your crowd, so you know, it’s back and forth, I wouldn’t want to do a full tour of festivals. Right, I definitely enjoy the venues myself. Yeah, I definitely would rather play them, well I didn’t say that, not like I would rather, I just enjoy playing those.

Fall 2012 Tour Dates! Do you have a favorite song from the band? I really like Dr. l’ling, Lotus; from the new record I’m super into Toska and Diamond Lightening. Now with your last album (Omni) you had an outside producer, is that correct? Yeah

• 10/21 - Gainesville, FL • 10/22 - Ft. Lauderdale, FL • 10/23 - Orlando, FL • 10/24 - Atlanta, GA • 10/25 - Nashville, TN

And on this one you had more control, are you glad that happened? Yeah, well, I wouldn’t say control is a good word to use. Matt Bayles who used to be in the band recorded our first bunch of records and recorded Infinity Overhead, he kind of just gets us more. Bringing in an outside producer for Omni wasn’t as well connected as the previous record.

• 10/26 - Saint Louis, MO

And he’s (Matt Bayles) more familiar with the band, so that helped. Correct, personality wise and musical wise.

• 11/01 - Houston, TX

Would you guys let someone from the outside come back in again? Yeah for sure, you know, it’s always good to try new things, but with that group of songs we thought it was important to have that to it. A lot of fans are wondering, are we ever going to see Chicken Wrapped in Bacon make it on one of the albums? No, we will do an internet remix of it at some point, but it will never make it on one of the albums.

SOLUTIONS FOR BUSINESS GROWTH

Austin City Limits A Modern Woodstock by Karl Goon

A

ustin City Limits, better known simply as ACL, is a 3 day music fest held every year in the “Live Music Capital of the World”, Austin, Texas. A weekend long celebration of live music, local eateries and artists showcasing their work in a festival unlike any other in Texas and like a very few in the world. Eight stages, 130+ artists, over 70,000 fans and hundreds of food vendors and artists all set in over 350 acres in beautiful Zilker Park.

I visited ACL for the first time last year during its 10th year anniversary and made a vow to visit it every year from then on. As one walks through the 350 acre long Zilker Park, you can’t help but feel as if you were transported back in time to the famous Woodstock Festival by what you see, hear, and smell. An ocean of scantily clad people everywhere you look. A blast and vast array of music in any direction you turn. Women dancing under the sun to their favorite artists with their hair flowing wildly in the wind. A sweet smell 58 _Celebritynights.com_October/November 2012

of local foods and herbs coming from either the local favorite food vendors or from a group of people sitting down on the grass. An overall feeling of a loose, laid-back and relaxed atmosphere sets over you as you step into this world of music making you feel like you are in one of the black-and-white photographs taken during that legendary 1969 concert.

“An overall feeling of a loose, laid-back and relaxed atmosphere”

Since its inauguration in 2002, ACL has kept its tradition going of featuring musicians from the best of both worlds, local artists and international legends playing in front of thousands of fans in one of the most commercially available festivals in the world. Notable artists who have attended the festival in the past include Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Pearl Jam, Stevie Wonder, The Eagles, Willie Nelson among many, many others. Last year I had the opportunity of seeing Coldplay, Skrillex, Social Distortion, NAS and Damien Marley, Chromeo, Stevie Wonder, Arcade Fire and, my personal favorite,

2012 Austin City Limits Manu Chao for a mere $150. This year’s ACL, running from October the 12th to the 14th, will feature (among hundreds of others, of course) M83, The Black Keys, Neil Young, Avicci, Iggy Pop, Jack White, Crystal Castles, Two Door Cinema Club and headlining will be The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Never sticking to a specific genre, ACL caters to everyone. ACL offers Rock Classics (Eagles, Tom Petty), Modern Rock (The Strokes, Black Keys, The Killers), Electronic Music (DeadMau5, Skrillex, Empire of the Sun), Country (Willie Nelson, Allison Kraus & Robert Plant) Punk (Iggy Pop, Social Distortion), Hip-Hop (Kanye West) and all the genres in between. So, no matter your taste in music, you are sure to find something to dance, rave, mosh, shuffle, or simply nod your head to during this awesome, 3-day party set in “The Music Capital of the World” Austin,Texas.

Things Women Say that drive men nuts

For years we’ve all heard the things men shouldn’t say to women, such as “Yeah, those jeans do make you look a little chunky,” and “Why didn’t you tell me you had a hot friend.” We’ve been doing our best to behave, but it’s time you knew there are a few things that won’t score you any points with the man in your life. For the most part, we’re an open book, but there are a few things that make us cringe. Here’s a look at 10 things women say that drive men nuts.

1) “That looks cute.” For the most part, men hate cute. We don’t want to hear about it, we don’t want to see it, and we sure as hell don’t want to be it. If we come down stairs after getting dressed and you tell us we look cute, there’s a 100 percent chance we’re changing. We’re supposed to be your protector, your rock, and cute does not fit into that picture.

2) “We need to talk.” These four words shut off a man’s brain faster than long division. When men hear you say that they immediately go into flight mode. And anything they can do to get out of this conversation—and better yet, your apartment—they will. There are plenty of other ways to approach a delicate conversation, and getting us in a place where we feel comfortable is a good start.

3) “It’s just a game.” Actually, it’s not just a game. Sports are a major part of our lives and the outcome has as much to do with our mood as just about anything else. Is it fair? No. Is it right? No. Is it immature? Maybe. But it’s life. Sometimes we just care too much. We understand that it doesn’t make sense, but you should be happy that we’re that passionate about something.

4) “Nothing’s wrong.” Please don’t tell us nothing’s wrong. The look on your face could make the toughest guy on the planet weep like a third-grade girl and your arms are crossed so tight you might explode. We’re not mind readers; tell us what’s going on. And don’t make us guess because—believe me—you won’t like what we come up with.

5) “I sound like my mom.” The mere fact that you might turn into your mom someday scares the hell out of us. Don’t say it, even in jest—it’s not funny. We actually believe (and pray) that the saying “every woman ends up looking like their mother” is an old wives’ tale. If we didn’t, no one would ever get married.

90 _Celebritynights.com_October/November 2012

6) “I just want to be friends.” No you don’t. You just want us to stop calling you. This is a lot like pulling off a band-aid. Do it quick—don’t prolong the agony. Most of us take “I just want to be friends” as “There’s still a chance,” so if there isn’t just make it a clean break and move on. Everyone will be much better because of it.

7) “Size doesn’t matter.” Don’t lie to us. We know it does, and we’re doing our best to make up for it in other ways. It’s best just to not say anything at all.

8) “What are you wearing?” We’re wearing whatever’s clean or whatever you tell us to. We don’t plan out our wardrobe days in advance, but we do actually try and look presentable. It may not work a lot of the time, but we do give it a shot. Giving us direction is completely encouraged though, so go ahead and suggest … nicely.

9) “Do you think she’s pretty?” Of course we do, our standards are much lower than yours. But just because we check her out doesn’t mean we think any less of you. We try to be as discreet as possible, but for the most part, we can’t help it. It’s in our DNA. When an attractive woman walks by, it’s best to just pretend nothing happened.

10) “Which outfit do you like better?” I’m going to be honest here—90 percent of the guys out there are not going to tell you which outfit they like better: They’re going to try to pick the one you like better and not get into a holy war when the babysitter is due any minute. To us, you always look good. Getting a couple cocktails and spending as much time as we can without the kids is our ultimate goal for a rare night out.
