Mom’s Guide

Brushing your Child’s Teeth

Kid’sFun “It is important to get your child comfortable with healthy oral hygiene habits as soon as possible.”

Start Early

Tooth decay in infants and toddlers most often occurs in the upper front teeth. Sometimes decay may be so severe that the teeth cannot be saved and must be removed. However, tooth decay is preventable. Since your child’s baby teeth are at risk for decay as soon as they first appear, it is important to start your child on good oral hygiene early in his or her life. • Birth - Six Months You should begin cleaning your baby’s mouth during the first few days after birth by wiping the gums with a clean, moist gauze pad or washcloth. • Six Months-Two Years A baby’s front four teeth usually push through the gums at about 6 months, although some children don’t have their first tooth until 12 or 14 months. When your child’s teeth begin to come in, brush them gently with a child-size toothbrush and water. •Two Years and Up For children older than 2, brush their teeth with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Be sure they spit out the toothpaste. You should ask your child’s dentist or physician if you are considering using fluoride toothpaste before the age of 2. Until you’re comfortable that your child can brush on his or her own, continue to brush your child’s teeth twice a day with a child-size toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. When your child has two teeth that touch, you should also begin flossing his or her teeth daily.

During your child’s first visit, you can expect the dentist to: • Clean your child’s teeth and provide tips for daily care.

McAllen All-Star

Sluggers

Bring Home National Championship

T

he McAllen Boys and Girls Club All Star Sluggers Team becomes the first Girls Fast-pitch softball team in McAllen history to bring home a National Championship. In June of this year, the McAllen All-Star Sluggers 14U Fast-Pitch Girls Softball Team began a journey that took them to the Natinal Tournament in Mandevile, Louisiana. The McAllen All-Star Sluggers Team was comprised of, Yulissa Hinojosa, Mariah Youngblood, Viktoria Polanco, Chelsea Boyd, Krystal Ramos, Alexa M. Ramirez, Daisy Gonzalez, Brianna Chaidez, Alexis Gutierrez, Brianna Salas, Arlene Smith and Vanissa Leal, and were coached by Head Coach Hector Ramos and Assistant Coaches, Felipe Alaniz, Omar Gutierrez and Diana Ramos. The team went undefeated in bracket play in the tournament, and at the peak of the game, beat Crowley Pride Louisiana 8-0 in the championship match.

For these girls, the trip to the national championship tournament represented the combination of years of practice, hard work, dedication, teamwork and most importantly, sportsmanship. It was a commitment to a sport that they love to play and the desire to reach the ultimate goal. This year that goal was met. This will be a memorable moment in their lives that they will carry with them always. It’s a constant reminder that any dream is possible if you believe in yourself, in your teammates and in your abilities. On Monday, 08/27/12, the Mayor and the City Commission of McAllen honored the team by proclaiming August 27, 2012 as: McAllen All-Star Sluggers Day.

CelebrityKid

Inside the Mind of a Millionaire Reader This is the second year in a row that Pamela won first place on the Millionaire Reader challenge with a reading record of 11,378,000 words. Horse Name? Dutchess, she is a really nice horse, she always tries her best for you and she never gives up. She is not mean like other horses that want to get you off them.

Favorite Food? Rice.

How do you learn the horses personality? First of all you have to bond with the horse, give them love and they’ll return the love. They can be like your sisters or brothers, know what they like, what they don’t like, just get to know them for the rest of the time you have them.

Any animals you dont like? Insects, especially grasshoppers. To me they are not considered animals.

Favorite hobbies? Reading and Horse Riding.

How do you feel when you are on a horse? I feel I own everything, I feel happy and free.

What do your parents say about this? They take it as something special, it helps them, since they don’t really need to look that much over me or after me.

Favorite teacher? ELA Teacher, Ms. Luna.

If you had a superpower, what would it be? Heal.

What would you like to be when you grow up? A veterinarian, I love animals.

Favorite movie? War horse and Flicka 3. I like War Horse since I read the book and it was awesome. Flicka is more about what I do, horse jumping.

Your goal? Be a vet and do high level horse jumping.

Why do you like to read? Because it takes me to other places that are not here, that don’t exist here. I get distracted and entertained; for me it’s fun. I also learn different words every time.

Favorite place to be? On a horse saddle.

24

| www.celebrityrgv.com | Issue 43

Food that you dislike the most? Green beans.

What excites you the most? Jumping and galloping on my horse.

How do you feel about your accomplishment? I don’t know what to say, too many accomplishments. I feel awesome about it and proud. I got 2nd place in my whole 6th grade class, I got 1st place for the Millionaire Reader in all the Edinburg School District (ECISD).

Who has helped you the most to pursue your goals? Obviously my parents, there are always there for me. Also Peggy Hide, she’s my trainer for English Riding, which is different from western, the cowboy side. They are my heroes as well. What do you like most about yourself? What I like the most about myself is that I am really responsible and independent, but sometimes the independent goes a little bit overboard.

CelebrityKid How did you feel when you won? I just felt so proud and full of myself. Pamela’s main hobbies are practicing and competing in horse jumping shows with her horse. How do you feel when you loose a jumping competition? I still need more practice to get to the top so I don’t really get sad. In my opinion, if I know me and my horse did everything good and didn’t mess up I still feel good no matter what, but if I mess up or my horse did something bad then I get frustrated. What is it that you like most about your school? I get to learn more and sometimes there is more time to read at school. I also get to be with my friends. What is the most difficult thing you have ever done and how did you overcame that? In 4th grade, writing was something that was very difficult for me. I still have some problems but I stop worrying about myself “am I doing this right, am I doing it wrong” and at the end I just check it. What is your favorite subject or what do you like to read the most about? Horses!

“ Y ou

What is the happiest memory that you have? When my dad bought me my 2nd horse, since I was too small when he bought me the first one so I didn’t care about it too much. This one was a pony of the Americas which is almost a horse but it is still considered a pony, which I named Princess; I was really happy about that. Do you ever want to grow up? Sometimes yes, I would be able to make my own decisions, but at the same time I don’t want to leave my parents, I still want to live with them. Also because of help, you always get more help when you are a kid. What is it that you like the most about being a kid? Being with my parents and I would say we are sometimes a bit more unconscious. Let’s say when we get on rides at the carnival or do extreme sports we don’t think “Oh this is going to happen to us” we just go and who cares if we fall. Describe a day in your life. I wake up around 5:30-6:30, I go outside in my pajamas, I feed the horses, the cows, the dogs, the birds, the bunnies and give them water as well in the stable. I go in, get ready for school, then I come back around 5pm. If it’s summer time I read or do chores inside since it’s too hot when I get back; when it’s cooler I either ride my horse or work

with them, or train my dogs. I have dinner then I go back to my chores around the house. Why do you love horses so much? They are beautiful, grateful, you get to ride them, they are really smart and for me they feel like humans. My favorite horse will be a horse that would take me to the Olympics. What is the nicest thing you have done for someone? I cleaned my mom’s room without her telling me to. Three things you don’t like about yourself? My cheeks, that’s certainly one, my chubby cheeks. I’m really impatient and that disturbs me, because with horses you have to be patient. Sometimes I get really frustrated and I get mad at them, which makes me get mad at myself because I don’t like that I’m so impatient. Sometimes I procrastinate, I want to do things when I’m supposed to, but it just so happens I don’t always do. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I see myself as a successful vet and at the same time going to the Olympics which is what I want to do, do both if I can. I see myself with 20 more horses, their stables, and a normal size house. I would rather have big stables than a big house.

Kid’sCookbook Chocolate Spider Cupcakes

INGREDIENTS Licorice Allsorts Chocolate sugar sprinkles 120 chocolate pocky sticks 1/4 cup chocolate flavor frosting 1 tbsp butter, room temp 2 ½ tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder ½ cup of bittersweet chocolate chips ½ cup plus 2 tbsp superfine sugar 1 tsp grated orange zest 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup self-rising flour

DIRECTIONS Pre-heat the oven to 350F. Beat together the butter and sugar until fluffy and smooth. Sift together the flour and cocoa powder in a separate bowl. Add the eggs to the creamed butter mixture a little at a time adding a tablespoon of the flour mixture with the second egg. Mix the orange zest and the remaining flour and cocoa until blended. Finally stir in the chocolate pieces. Line a large muffin tray with 10 paper cases and fill each one until 2/3 full. Bake the muffins for 20 to 22 minutes. When cool, spread a little chocolate butter cream over each of the cupcakes and then sprinkle with chocolate flavored strands. To make the legs, take the chocolate sticks and cut off the piece not covered with chocolate. Cut a quarter of the sticks on each side of the spider’s body, then melt the chocolate, dip one end of each of the longer sticks into the chocolate and attach these to the shorter lengths. Arrange them on trays or baking sheets lined with greaseproof or baking paper and allow the chocolate to set. The melted chocolate will harden as it cools, keeping the legs stuck together. Push one end of the legs into the body of the spider and then repeat. Finish off with Liquorice Allsort eyes. *Makes 10 spider cupcakes

Halloween Safety Guide

Help protect your family by staying one step ahead.

1

DON’T FRANKENSTEIN YOUR LIGHTS Be sure to check the rating on your extension cords and do not plug in more than the recommended wattage. Use special, heavy duty extension cords for high wattage decorations such as fog machines and electrically-powered inflatable decorations.

2

BEWARE OF CANDLES! Candles, especially in a Jack O’Lantern, should be off the ground and out of children’s reach. Try battery-operated LED candles for an even safer option.

3

DON’T TRIP UP YOUR GOBLINS Halloween costumes should allow full movement for your kids. Costumes that drag, constrict or drape pose a dangerous hazard, especially at night. Check to ensure that costumes don’t restrict your children’s vision, and instruct them to watch out for tripping hazards, such as cords.

4

SAY BOO! TO UNSAFE COSTUMES Be sure to purchase or make costumes out of flame-resistant materials such as nylon or polyester as these specially marked fabrics will resist burning and extinguish quickly. Make sure your child knows to stop, drop and roll in case their costume catches fire. Practice this strategy beforehand.

5

BE SAFE AND BRIGHT Choose costumes that are lighter in color and attach reflective materials to costumes. Make sure each child has a flashlight to help them see and be seen.

6

KEEP HUNGRY MONSTERS FROM FEEDING Never let your kids eat Halloween candy before you inspect it in the light at home. Even if you know your neighbors, you should always check to be safe and throw away open candy or anything that looks suspicious.

When trick-or-treating first became popular in the United States in the 1800s, more children played mischievous pranks than asked for candy. By the 1950s, though, the focus had switched to good old family fun, with sugar-hyped children dressed in costumes.

UTB & TSC

ASTHMA CAMP On July 20th, the University of Brownsville invited parents in our community to the Respiratory Care Summer Asthma Camp to enjoy a great time with their family and friends. Games, pool time, & other activities were available at the camp.

What’s Asthma?

Asthma (say: az-muh) is a condition that affects a person’s airways, which are also called breathing tubes or bronchial (say: brong-kee-ul) tubes. These tubes lead from the windpipe, or trachea (say: tray-kee-uh), into the lungs. For most kids, breathing is simple: They breathe in through their noses or mouths and the air goes into the windpipe. From there, it travels through the airways and into the lungs. But for kids with asthma, breathing can be a lot more difficult because their airways are very sensitive.

Who Gets Asthma?

Asthma is more common than you might think. As many as 7 million kids in the United States have it. Asthma affects about 1 or 2 kids out of 10. That means if you have 20 kids in your class, 2-4 of them might have asthma. Asthma can start at any age, even in a little baby or an adult, but it’s most common in school-age kids.

How Is Asthma Treated?

Kids who have asthma should try to avoid things that can cause their airways to tighten. But some triggers, like cats, colds, and chalk dust, can’t always be avoided. That’s why kids who are sensitive to those things must manage their asthma by taking medication. Not every kid’s asthma is the same, so there are different medicines for treating it. It’s not like curing a sore throat or an earache, when everybody gets the same medicine. Instead, the doctor will think about what causes the asthma flare-ups, how fast the flare-ups happen, and how serious they are. Then he or she will decide on the best kind of treatment. http://kidshealth.org

Kid’sCookbook Mini Caramel Apples

INGREDIENTS • 4-inch lollipop sticks • Melon baller • Granny Smith apples (one apple makes about 8 mini apples) • Butterscotch or peanut butter chips • Chopped nuts, nonpareils, sprinkles, shredded coconut, or candy for decoration (optional) • Small paper candy cups

INSTRUCTIONS 1. First, cut the lollipop sticks in half at an angle (the point end will go into the apple pieces easier). With the melon baller, scoop little balls out of the apple. Each ball should have a section of apple peel. Push half of a lollipop stick into the peel of each ball. Pat the apple pieces until they are dry. 2. Melt the chips according to the package directions. If desired, dip the bottoms of the caramel apples in chopped nuts, coconut, chocolate chips, or sprinkles. Place the apples in the refrigerator to set the caramel, and if necessary, use your hands to re-shape any droopy apples before serving. 3. Miniature Caramel Apples are best the day they are made, but if they have been properly assembled, they will keep for an additional day or two in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

The most common varieties of apple used to create these treats are Fuji and Granny Smith which work best for two reasons. First, the tart flavor is a better contrast to the sweet coating. Second, crisp apples like these hold up better under the heat and weight of the coating.

100 years.

arch 12, 2012 marked the official 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts. One hundred years ago, Juliette Gordon Low met with 18 girls in Savannah, GA to start what would one day become the largest girl-serving organization in the United States. Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas supports Low’s vision of creating women leaders which has grown over the past 100 years. Currently there are over three million Girl Scouts nationwide. There are over 7,500 Girl Scouts in the greater Harlingen, McAllen and Brownsville area with about 1,500 volunteers leading them. For four years troop leader Debbie Garza has been teaching her scouts about confidence, character and courage. “I see how the girls change from the moment they start Girl Scouts,” Garza, a Harlingen leader, said. “They are not afraid to speak up, they are not afraid to tell their friends their opinion and it is exciting to see. It is good to see them grow and become leaders.”

Garza said the biggest reward for her is the smiles on the girl’s faces when they learn something or participate in an activity. “They want to learn,” Garza said. “When girls succeed, so does society,” Lea Peacock, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas, said. “We ask all members of society to join us in support of girls to help them fulfill their leadership potential. All of us have a role to play in making that happen.”

Girl Scout Facts
