My Child and

Diabetes

A

ccording to the latest National Diabetes Fact Sheet, 25.8 million children and adults, 8.3% of the population, have diabetes. Of those 27.8 million, 7 million are undiagnosed and many of them are children. The most common type of diabetes usually diagnosed in children is Type 1 “juvenile diabetes”, when the pancreas does not make insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. Both types have different causes, mainly an inherited predisposition of the disease then something in the environment that triggers it.

10

Shots and Checkups are not something fun, but Insulin saves lives so these are non-negotiable pokes. (Visit www.diabetes.org for more tips on how to handle and make your child feel better at the doctor’s visit.) After a diabetes diagnosis, tending to a cold also includes managing blood glucose (BG) levels that may be more difficult to control. Make sure you are fully prepared during your child’s sick days.

Even though diabetes is a disease that they’ll need to care for all their lives, this won’t prevent them from achieving their highest goals.

Everyone who cares for your child – from babysitters to adult relatives – should be trained on the basics of diabetes care and what to do in an emergency. Before leaving your child in someone’s care, it’s important they know that every person with diabetes is different.

When living with Diabetes: Always have supplies handy; blood glucose can drop when you least expect it. - Fast acting sugars such as juice, hard candies, regular soda or even cake icing can be crucial in this situation.

Before sending your child back to school, notify the school, especially the principal, school nurse and teacher(s) that your child has diabetes. Work with a diabetes educator to train and prepare them for what’s involved in diabetes management to ensure a safe learning environment for your child.

Awareness CHILDHOOD DIABET ES When traveling, be prepared, especially when your child is under someone else’s care. Diabetes should not prevent your child from enjoying family vacations, slumber parties, or trips to grandma’s house; plan ahead.

Visit the doctor for a check up before any trip and make sure to ask for: 1) Written prescriptions for insulin and any medication. Then, if

the travel supplies are lost or damaged – you are only a pharmacy visit away from replacements. 2) A doctor’s letter describing everything needed for treatment, including medical devices. It should also note any food or medicine allergies or sensitivities. Physical exercise is good for your children, and important for those with diabetes. Whether it’s a team sport, a solo sport or an outdoor adventure that your child enjoys, planning is key. Blood glucose (BG) levels can drop during or after exercise so be on the lookout, be prepared and check often. Diabetes doesn’t mean doing without your family’s traditional holiday treats, birthday parties, or outings to your favorite restaurant. Let them enjoy the holiday season with a little planning.

TEETHING Symptoms and Teething Remedies

O

ne of the first rituals of life that we all go through is teething. Most baby teeth start to emerge approximately six months after birth. All twenty baby teeth will push through the gums during the first few years of your child’s life. Most children will have their full set of these teeth by the age of three. The front four teeth are usually the first to appear at about six months of age. However, some children do not have their first baby tooth until twelve or fourteen months. Some babies may become irritable, sleepless, lose their appetite, or drool more than usual as their teeth come in. If your baby has a fever, rash, or diarrhea while teething or continues to be cranky and uncomfortable, you should call your physician as these are not normal symptoms for a teething baby. Sore or tender gums are common problems during teething. Here are a few things you can do to make your baby more comfortable: • Gently rub the gums with a clean finger, a small, cool spoon, or a moist gauze pad. A wet washcloth placed in the freezer for thirty minutes makes a handy teething aid -- just be sure to wash it after each use. • Provide a clean teething ring for your child to chew on. Avoid ones with liquid inside because they may break or leak. If you use a teething ring, be sure to take it out of the freezer before it becomes rock hard. You don’t want to bruise those already swollen gums! Also, never tie a teething ring around a baby’s neck -- it could get caught on something and strangle the baby. • Wipe your baby’s face often with a cloth to remove the drool and prevent rashes from developing. • If your baby seems irritable, ask your doctor if it is okay to give a dose of acetaminophen or ibuprofen (for babies older than six months) to ease discomfort. Never place an aspirin against the tooth. Also, do not rub alcohol on your baby’s gums. The Food and Drug Administration recommends not using benzocaine products for children younger than two years of age, except under the advice and supervision of a health care professional. Benzocaine is an over-the-counter anesthetic, usually under the product names Anbesol, Hurricaine, Orajel, Baby Orajel, and Orabase. Benzocaine has been associated with a rare but serious (and sometimes fatal) condition called methemoglobinemia. Methemoglobinemia is a disorder in which the amount of oxygen carried through the blood stream is greatly reduced.

You should start regular dental check-ups for your child after his or her first tooth appears (but no later than the first birthday) to make sure your baby has a beautiful smile for life. This article is brought to you by

Yummy in the Tummy Cancer is the number one disease causing death amongst children. 46 children are diagnosed with cancer every day. The sad part is that they only get an average of 3% of funding for research. For this year National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, RGV Life Lifters has partnered up with the Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children’s Cancer & Hematology Clinic here in McAllen, TX to do a Snack, Scarf & Hat Drive from September 12-27, 2012. the kids who are undergoing treatments. It will also help the family who lovingly support them all the way. Because every family member is also affected every time a son or daughter, a sibling or grandchild is diagnosed with cancer. Let us help spread awareness and give each child and their family hope and encouragement. Because kids get cancer too and they deserve all the help they can get! We would like to thank the businesses that participated, RGV Promos, The Social Club, The Law Office of Bobby Garcia,

Doctors Rehab in Edinburg, Tindahan Filipino Store and Castro Elementary School in Mission. Thanks to the generosity of the Rio Grande Valley Community, this made the event a huge success.
