Michael’s Heroes a story about Autism
rom the moment I found out that I was expecting I was ecstatic, I was so excited with the idea of having yet another blessing being sent our way. Like many other mothers I prepared myself for what was to come ahead and being that I already had another child the wait for my sweet baby seemed like it was taking forever! Yet finally early one July morning my son Michael arrived and my wait was finally over. Quickly upon his arrival we noticed that our baby had some quick twitching movements and that he didn’t like to be held yet he was comforted by constant move-

by Stacy Rodriguez ment. This was a concern to us so we brought it up to the doctors’ attention at the hospital and we were told that all babies are different and to try other methods to soothe him. We did as we were told however it was very obvious that our precious little angel had an alternative plan in store for us and at the tender age of 10 days our adventure with our little one began. After a couple weeks passed and countless numbers of tests had been done it was determined by medical professionals that our little angel Michael was having seizures every time the twitching incidents were occurring. Shortly after the news
CelebrityKid came to be that our baby had a seizure disorder and that it was going to be a guessing game in determining what the cause for his seizures would be. The hardest part was trying to discover what would cause these horrifying seizures and ensure that he would be safe during one. We quickly got a handle on this obstacle and he started to see a neurologist and with the help of modern day medicine there was finally some control for these seizures.
“
help him become a bit more social. We already knew that our beloved Michael had developmental delays but we didn’t realize that all of his delays were the cause to his frustration. Thanks to the support we had and still have from his teachers, therapist and friends we are now able to enjoy our little angel to the maximum. Being that by the age of 1 year 11 months our son had already been diagnosed with Autism, we knew that he would flourish and succeed at his own pace on his own time.
Our son Michael is different, NOT less! At the age of 3 he As his parents we hope to be around to started going to public Even though see Michael achieve his greater strengths school. he had his moments he managed to show and to see Autism be a part of him, improvements daily…. Slowly but surely! Now at the age of 6 he is NOT what def ines him! able to show his family affection, has become As time passed, and numerous doctor visits later we felt like the glass was finally half full! Nevertheless again we under estimated the situation and with time the neurologist started to see some traits that were not found in seizure patients. When our son was 15 months old we were told that he displayed several characteristics of children with the Autism Spectrum Disorder (little to no eye contact, lack of affection towards family, resistance to being held or touched, difficulty reading facial expressions and body language, preferred being alone, did not like loud unpredicted noises, and minimal acknowledgement of others). At that time we were told to patiently wait and see if these characteristic would grow or if they would disappear. It didn’t take long for us to see that these characteristics would be here to stay and they began to show their true colors real quick and every day more intense than the day before. By now the shock factor had already kicked in but we just wanted to know how we could help our little guy improve. That’s when the therapies started. We started taking him to a children’s rehab center where as his parents they showed us how to calm him down, how to regain his attention and
a bit more verbal, has shown his personality with a sense of humor and is in 1st grade. He enjoys going to school and gets very upset when he gets to many days off from school. This school year he has yet to miss a day of school. Every day that passes he manages to amaze us tremendously. Every now and then he has his moments to where we feel like the world is collapsing on us and that the weight of the world is on our shoulders but even then we must admit that even on those days he is an amazing little boy that will nourish and prosper in due time. As our little boy changes and develops daily, as a family, his mommy Stacy, his daddy Eliseo and his big brother Eli want everyone to know that we are his biggest fans! We will do anything and everything in our power to help him become a successful young man with independence! Autism is a NOT a bad trait to have it is simply just a different trait that requires a different way of thinking, learning, and behaving. Our son Michael is different NOT less! As his parents we hope to be around to see Michael achieve his greater strengths and to see Autism be a part of him NOT what defines him! s much as all of us want to go out to a tree in the backyard and fill our pockets with money, only our kids actually believe it’s possible, as evidenced by their impassioned pleas for the newest video game and latest fashion finds. As parents, teaching our kids the cold, hard facts about money can be a daunting task. If only it were as simple as saying, “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” Actually, you can say that; it just doesn’t teach much, according to Samantha Ayala from Security Service Federal Credit Union (SSFCU). “What we really want to teach our children is how to save, spend, grow and protect their money. Not just that it’s hard to come by.”
But how do you do that? Celebrity Kids asked Ayala for a roadmap. 1. It’s never too early to start the conversation. Teach them the names of coins. As they learn to count and add, explain how five pennies equals a nickel and so on. 2. Teaching more complex concepts can begin with something as simple as offering tokens or coupons as rewards and encouraging your child to save up to “buy” a day at the park or extra video game time. 3. Use every opportunity to teach. At the grocery store, give them two dollars and explain they can buy a snack that has a number less than two before the dot. Let them pay. 4. Above all, make it fun! Set up four jars or envelopes labeled spend, save, invest and give and have a conversation about how much to put in each. Play board games like Monopoly® and The Game of Life®. Encourage them to save more than they spend and show how an interest-bearing account can (almost automagically) increase the money they put away for a rainy day. 5. In the tween years, consider a small allowance. Offer odd jobs to earn extra money. They can organize a lemonade stand, walk a neighbor’s dog or go through old toys and sell the best ones at a resale shop. Open a savings account for them so they have a place to put their earnings. Now’s a good time to raise smart consumers by teaching comparison shopping.
20
| www.celebritykidsmagazine.com | Issue 46
6. Once they are teens, kick into high gear. Introduce checking accounts, debit/credit cards and keeping good records. Include them in the budgeting process for your household. Begin a series of reality checks explaining financial realities from how much is taken out of a paycheck to the actual cost of owning and maintaining a car. It’s also the ideal time to start talking about saving for college. 7. Hands down, the most critical factor to teaching kids to handle money is being good role models. We must communicate our values and set an example for our children in saving, spending and preparing for the future. As a credit union, SSFCU is dedicated to helping kids be money smart. Our youth savings account opens with just $5 and has no monthly service fees, no minimum account balances and interest accrues daily. As joint account owners, parents can watch and teach all along the way.

The Importance of Sleep
source: kidshealth.org
Learn about why sleep is necessary for your kid’s body and how other parents developed a sleeping routine for their kids. — By Alana Ybarra
“t
ime to get ready for bed!” you call to your kids from the other room. You hear their cries of refusal as they try to get to the next level of a game or finish watching an episode of their favorite TV show. As parents know, it’s not an easy task to get their kids to bed early. Just when you think they’re sound asleep you hear a faint giggle coming from their room. So how can you organize a sleeping schedule for your kids? Most importantly, how can you convince your kids that sleep isn’t boring and is crucial to their brain development? “Take a bit of your time to play with your children before going to bed and always make sure they had a hearty meal for dinner,” says Fran Piñon, mother of two. “I find this routine helpful for when it’s time for my kids to

wind down. Talk to them and let them know why they have to go to bed early.” The average kid has a busy day. There’s school, running around with friends, going to sports practice or other activities, and doing your homework. Phew! By the end of the day, their body needs a break. So calming activities before bed, like taking a bath, reading a story, or perhaps a gentle massage are good choices. When their body doesn’t have enough hours to rest, your kids may feel tired or cranky, or may be unable to think clearly. This means it can interfere with school and they could have a hard time following directions. “My soon to be 3 year old has stayed up until four in the morning before,” says a local dad. “I usually fix this problem by putting on a movie and he’ll eventually go into sleep land. I’ve
learned giving him sugar before bed is not the best idea.” Although we advise to keep TVs, computers and the like out of the bedroom, we’ve found some parents have had success with this method. Most kids between 5 and 12 get about 9.5 hours a night, but experts agree that most need 10 or 11 hours each night. Sleep is an individual thing and some kids need more than others. Let your child know what the routine is, including the time limits involved, and stick to them. One more reason to get enough sleep: If they don’t, they may not grow as well. That’s right, researchers believe too little sleep can affect growth and their immune system so do your best to anticipate all this. Your child will appreciate this in the long run.
