books they’ll fall for THE BEST OF AUTUMN’S PICTURE BOOK BOUNTY. “HANK FINDS AN EGG,”

“IKE’S INCREDIBLE INK,”

BY REBECCA DUDLEY

BY BRIANNE FARLEY

Delight young children with this endearing and uniquely illustrated wordless picture book! The wordless tale of a forest creature who discovers an egg that’s fallen from its nest takes on an ethereal quality in the hands of Rebecca Dudley. An artist and photographer, Dudley arranges each scene and then takes pictures.

The journey is the important thing in this tale of a sympathetic, if temporarily distracted, artistic soul. Ike wants to write a story, an incredible story. He’s all ready to go, but even after cleaning his room and calling his best friend, he somehow can’t seem to get started. And then Ike realizes what’s missing, he needs new ink.

“TOUCH THINK LEARN BOOKS,” BY XAVIER DENEUX Our senses are telling us this new series from Chronicle Books is the next big thing. The hands-on board books combine heavy duty die cuts with raised cutouts, so the pages fit together like puzzle pieces. You read the color or word aloud; kids use their fingers to trace the shapes and take learning to another dimension.

“HERMAN AND ROSIE,” BY GUS GORDON

New York City is a big, crowded, noisy place; it’s a wonder an oboeplaying crocodile and a jazz-singing deer managed to find each other and make shoulder-popping music. Layered mixed-media illustrations, including postcards, newsprint, subway schedules, and pencil drawings, put this one on the map.

All these books are available on amazon.com for $15 and less.

Appreciation What motivated you to become a teacher? At first I started as a Teacher Aide and then Sr. Marilyn, Principal, encouraged me to seek educational courses to start a teaching profession and here I am 8 years later and still going.

What do you want our school community to know about you that that we don’t know? Actually, there is one thing I would like to tell the community: to spread the word to their families, relatives and friends that Incarnate Word Academy is a family-oriented school. The teachers go beyond their limits to teach every child in our school. That is what I want for the community to know about my colleagues and me. We all have high expectations for every child that attends IWA.

What do you like most about teaching? What I like most about teaching is the feeling that I am making a difference in the lives of my students. I enjoy creating memories with every single child that goes through my classroom. If I made a difference in the life of at least one of my students, my job is done!

Miriam Casarez

Teacher of the Month

Grade Level: Kindergarten | Teaching subject: All subjects | Experience: 8 years of teaching

How does it feel to be Teacher of the Month? I feel blessed to be among teachers who are considered Teachers of the Month. In my case, I am extremely blessed with the support of my students, parents and colleagues. They make me feel good each day when I enter my classroom or walk around the hallways. We are all a family at Incarnate Word Academy.

12

| www.celebritykidsmagazine.com | Issue 48

Do you have a favorite age group to teach? Yes, my favorite age groups are PK and Kindergarten because the students are like sponges. They absorb everything you teach them and at the same time, we all have fun with hands-on activities. Can you list three words that illustrate your personality? Happy, Happy, Happy!

What’s one of the biggest obstacles teachers have to face? I don’t know. Jesus has helped me through every obstacle I have encountered, so I can’t say I have had a big obstacle to face.

How do your students inspire you? My students inspire me by simply coming to school on a daily basis and telling me that they love me and that they will miss me when they go to another grade level.

What is your teaching philosophy? Everyone who comes into my classroom will take a lifetime of lessons, experiences, memories and a lot of LOVE!

Appreciation

Monica

Leyendecker Teacher of the month

Grade Level: 6th, 7th & 8th | Teaching Subject: Science | Experience: 8 years of teaching

How does it feel to be teacher of the month? It’s an honor. Do you have a favorite age group to teach? I love to teach 7th grade. They are so full of questions and emotions that it makes it easy to work with them. All you have to do is listen to them. Three words that illustrate your personality? Strong, Friendly, and sometimes Funny What motivated you to become a teacher? Teaching was not my first choice. I bumped into my science teacher one day after Mass and she encouraged me to give teaching a try. I now have the privilege of working at Incarnate word Academy, where I attended school when I was a kid. What do you want our school community to know about you that we do not know? I really enjoy teaching middle school students.

16

| www.celebritykidsmagazine.com | Issue 48

What do you like most about teaching? What I like the most about teaching is that I have the opportunity to play an important role in students’ lives. Education is the key to helping students achieve their goals. What’s one of the biggest obstacles teachers have to face? One of the biggest obstacles teachers have to face is intolerance. It is the enemy of education. How do your students inspire you? My students inspire me to be a better teacher. Their happiness and joy is contagious. They also inspire me to forgive; they have huge hearts that allow for forgiveness. What is your teaching philosophy? Courage to follow your heart and respect one another.
