GLAMOUR | SUN PROTECTION

It’s a fact: The ocean is one big sun reflector. You’re more at risk for sunburns and sun damage on the shore than anywhere else. If you are under an umbrella don’t think you are safe: You still get sun exposure the closer you get to the ocean. Because the water reflects light you still need to apply and reapply sunscreen. The umbrella is not a safety net. 2) Pack Water - This is just as important as sunscreen! Sure, it’s great to have juice or soda for a beach day, but be sure to also pack water. Sun exposure causes you to lose moisture at a faster rate, meaning you need to constantly be sipping on water throughout your day in the sun. Keep water ice cold by filling up half a bottle, freezing it overnight and then filling it up the rest of the way the next morning. Bored by water? Shake it up with your favorite flavored mix!

Going to the beach? IMPORTANT SKIN CARE TIPS TO KNOW

Courtesy of: Etoile De Paris Spa in Brownsville, TX | To schedule a skin care appointment call us at: 956.350.2999 Summer is fast approaching and the beach is without a doubt one of our favorite places on Earth, but spending a day there without preparation can leave our skin scorched and dehydrated. Since the RGV is so close to the beach there are a few important skin care tips to keep in mind so you don’t end up with major sun damage.

T

here is nothing worse than a painful sunburn that takes a few weeks to heal. Here we give you important skin care tips to implement into your beach or pool trip. 1) Sunscreen - Even if you plan on getting a tan, always pack a high SPF to wear after tanning. A sunscreen that holds up with sweat and water is an ideal option because you’ll likely be going into the water. The most important thing about sunscreen is not the SPF number but how often and generously you apply it.

14 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 49

We recommend SPF 30 and reapply it as often as every hour. Also be aware of oily skinned areas, these areas of your face have larger pores and will always produce more oils. These natural oils can breakdown sunscreens more quickly, so pay attention to areas such as the nose and chin and reapply sunscreen more often. The nose area acts as a natural reflector. Also apply sunscreen in forgotten areas: Hairline, ears, tops of feet, toes and eyelids.

3) Protect your lips - You might not think about it when you’re putting on sunscreen, but the lips are very sensitive to the sun. Avoid burning your lips by wearing a thick balm that offers sun protection, with at least an SPF of 4 - however, there are many options out there with higher SPF. 4) Wear a hat and sunglasses - If the goal is to help protect your skin from premature aging, a hat and sunglasses can be the extra coverage you need for your face. 5) Got acne? Go for a swim - The salt in the ocean water helps destroy bacteria, which can clear up your breakouts. Make sure to wear sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 which works best to protect oily, and acneprone skin. 6) Rinse off the saltwater - The same water that is destroying bacteria is also very dehydrating (great for blemishes, but not for dry skin). Make sure to rinse off before leaving beach. When you get home, soak yourself in cold water to cool off your skin, and after you dry the skin apply a moisturizing lotion. 7) Wear mineral makeup - For extra protection, most mineral powders have an SPF rating of 20 and will give you a finished look without being too heavy for the beach. Follow these important skin care tips when planning a trip to the beach or the pool. Always remember the sun is a lot stronger near the ocean and causes a lot more damage. So it’s very important to protect your skin to prevent damage and premature aging.

GLAMOUR | BREAST AUGMENTATION

BUSINESS | ERIC MEDINA

ERIC MEDINA

CUSTOM POKER TABLE DESIGNER By: Gladys Villarreal Photography by: Alberto Porras

“I have a nitch for making poker tables, not a lot of people do this or know how to do this.”

E

ric Medina business owner, designer, and builder for Medina’s Custom Poker Tables, has become one the best and most known designers in the poker table making industry. With great vision and dedication Eric has created a great name for himself and his business. Not knowing or ever thinking that this would become more than just a hobby; but a great passion, Eric has created amazing custom tables for many residents here in the RGV area! But behind every business owner there is a great story to be told behind the magic and the beginning of great talent. ERIC WHY POKER TABLES? It all started when I would get together with my friends and we started playing cards. One day at a friend’s house I noticed that the poker table was really uncomfortable; cards would always be falling off the table, so I decided to go home and figure out how to build a table of my own. Having a carpenter background this helped me a lot when it came to building my first table. Once the table was done I took it to my brother’s house, the table turned out to be a great success; everyone liked it.

30 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 49

Right after building my very first poker table, I decided to build another one. My second table was a bigger success, mainly because I used the knowledge that I had learned from building the first one and applied it to the second one. I was then approached by someone that had seen my work; he wanted me to make him a custom table for his house. After building this one, word got out about the quality of work that I put into each poker table. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BUILDING POKER TABLES FOR? I started my business in 2006, but in the past year it has really taken off. WHERE DOES YOUR INSPIRATION COME FROM; WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGNING EACH TABLE? My inspiration truly comes from each individual customer. In most cases I get a lot of men that want to add a poker table to their man cave. I usually try to invision a design that would go with the theme that they already have, and one that would go perfect with their furniture. I take pride in my work and I build tables that I would like to have in my own home.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO BUILD A TABLE? Each table varies because each one is a custom order, however most tables are completed in a week. DO YOU ONLY HAVE ONE STANDARD SIZE? No, I have different shapes and sizes; oval, kidney, round, octagon, etc. I also make a special design for men that don’t have a game room but want a poker table in their household. I build a dining room table that turns into a poker table just by taking the top off. These are very popular! YOU HAVE BEEN DOING SOME CHARITY WORK; TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT? A couple of months after the business took off, I was approached by some Non-Profits in the RGV area, about donating some of my poker tables for their charity events. I was honored by the idea, and accepted without any hesitation. I enjoy helping the community in any way that I can; I have worked with several Non-Profits which include: Monica’s House, Brownsville Junior Service League, Rio Grande Valley Partnership Foundation, IDEA Public School, and Moody Clinic Just to name a few. & EXCEPTIONAL BUSINESS SARAH

SAGREDO HAMMOND Company:Atlas Electric al & Air Conditioning Alton, TX Education: Pan American Paralegal Certificate, A&M - Associate Degree: Real Estate. Working with Atlas since 1997 Worked with an attorney for 17 years.

What makes you stand out from other business owners? My character; with a strong integrity and work ethic I tend to be aggressive in my approach, ask questions, and voice my opinion. What are the most crucial things you have done for Atlas Electrical & Air Conditioning? I brought down our collections by 75% the first year. Furthermore, through community outreach, we have also increased our clientele by 40%. What has been your most effective marketing tactic or technique? One to one marketing is astronomical for us. I work hard by having Atlas involved with 6 chambers, and 10 organizations. Personal involvement is essential by being an active executive member of: TAMACC (Texas Association of Mexican American chambers of commerce), H.E.A.T. (Hispanic Entrepreneurs Association of Texas), RGV Hispanic Chamber, O.W.E. (Organization of Women Executives), Alton Chamber, Mission Chamber, Y.E.S. (Young Executive Society), B.N.I. (Business Networking International), and A.C.C.A. RGV (Air Conditioning Contractors of America). How important have good employees been to your business? Every foundation needs to be rock solid to be able to build and grow. Good employees make Atlas “SOLID”. Atlas has been blessed to have GREAT employees. Our staff has heart and takes pride in what they do, and Atlas would not have it any other way. What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful woman? Confidence, communication and vision. Who has been your greatest inspiration? My parents are my greatest inspiration. My mother is amongst the smartest business women. She dedicated her life to grow the business, maintained excellent accounting and sacrificed financially and personally to help make Atlas what it is today. How do you find people to bring into your business that truly care about it the way you do? There are three qualities that are necessary to have that caring attitude and I like to call them the three “H’s”: humility, hunger and honesty. If the person is humble, then they will not take things for granted. When one is hungry for knowledge, then growth never stops and when you add in honesty, then you cannot have a better staff.

WOMEN DEBORAH PORTILLO Company: Portillo Chic Brownsville TX Studied at Southern Methodist University in Dallas for four years and graduated from UTB with a Bachelor’s & Master’s in English. She worked at Portillo Jewelers in Harlingen (her family’s business) for over 10 years. She has also worked with Non-Profits and it was there she decided to become more involved with the community. Portillo Chic, transcends to the City Commission seat.

What makes you stand out from other business owners? The client is the boss in our business. Everyday operations revolve completely around the customer. From maintaining a clean and welcoming store, to offering only the finest quality at the lowest possible price, and customizing unique pieces specifically tailored for each individual. What are the most crucial things you have done for Portillo Chic? I consider Portillo Chic to be my “baby”. Starting up your own business is no easy feat. Although Portillo Chic is a branch from Portillo Jewelers (my family’s business), the concept is slightly different. The experience I have to offer from working with my family’s business for over ten years, has allowed me to incorporate all the great attributes the Portillo name comes with, while making it adapt to the times and younger generations. What has been your most effective marketing tactic or technique? Personal attention. Everyone, myself included, appreciates it when someone remembers your name, face, or what you purchased. That is “key” letting your client know that they matter to you. How important have good employees been to your business? Very important. I consider Portillo Chic to be my extended family. A good associate is one that sees this job as much more than clocking in and out. What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful woman? First Humility – I accept that I do not know everything. Second: Control your expenses and learn to adapt – In any market there are highs and lows. Third: Appreciate and celebrate your staff and clients – Your staff and clients are crucial to any operation. Who has been your greatest inspiration? My parents, they built their business from nothing and learned how to be successful without any expertise in the field or today’s modern technology. How do you find people to bring into your business that truly care about it the way you do? Ideally I recruit through my existing staff. If I have an associate that “gets it,” then I have them suggest someone that they believe would be the right fit for the Portillo Chic team.

ENTERTAINMENT | IMAS EXHIBIT

DESDE LA CIUDAD PROHIBIDA A UNA CIUDAD EN TEXAS...

Por: Gaby Jones, Directora de Mercadotecnia y Relaciones Publicas del Museo Internacional de Arte y Ciencia. Fotografía: IMAS

R

Pole dancing FOR FITNESS AND PLEASURE!

Courtesy of: D’Xache Hair Studio & Barber Shop in Brownsville, TX | For more information on Pole-dancing classes call us at: 956.572.5269 Would you like to discover a form of fitness that’s so much fun you might have to force yourself NOT to do it? An activity that you’ll enjoy long enough to actually see results? This is possibly the most controversial fitness trend, but what better way to have a great laugh, get fit and feel sexy than with Pole-dancing!

S

o what are Pole-dancing classes about? Usually the classes are women only and a mix of erotic dancing, making pleasure faces and doing physical moves using funky music. Pole-dancing is about having fun, first and foremost and certainly most classes will teach you half a dozen basic moves including how to climb the pole and with practice it will become easy to do.

52 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 49

Other moves include: twirling, spinning and swinging plus those all important static moves posing to the audience or your special man! If you didn’t know it Pole-dancing has become very popular. The classes are not intended to train you professionally. They are there to welcome women of all ages and sizes in order to get fit, increase flexibility, improve posture, tone up, burn calories and improve confidence.

NO experience is necessary. As a matter of fact, most students have never touched a pole before. So don’t feel intimidated anyone can do this no matter what your fitness level, dance ability, or confidence level.

There are beginner classes that repeat the same moves each time you take the class so if you’re not comfortable lifting yourself off the floor, you can take the class again and again until you are comfortable with the moves. And you WILL be doing tricks in no time! More advanced classes have new choreography every time to challenge you and keep you interested. D’Xache Hair Studio in Brownsville offers Pole-dancing classes and is currently welcoming new students. Because Poledancing is so enjoyable and rewarding, we should warn you it quickly becomes an addiction! Your self-esteem sky-rockets, you feel great, you look great and the sweet taste of triumph quickly becomes addictive. Each time you accomplish a move, you are inspired to do better, to push harder, to achieve more and you may unleash your inner Goddess. Classes at D’Xache are women only, which offers freedom for students new to this style of dance.

GLAMOUR | SHELLAC NAILS

what is shellac?

THE NEWEST NAIL TREND Courtesy of: D’Xache Hair Studio & Barber Shop in Brownsville,TX For more information on Shellac nails, or to schedule an appointment call us at: 956.572.5269

S

ummer is almost here, and for many women that means it’s time to break out the corals, strawberries, wildfires, and pretty-in-pinks. If you’re sick of redoing your nails every few days you may be considering CND’s Shellac UV Color Coat which can keep your nails in perfect shape throughout your two week beach vacation. But before you do, here are some things you should know.

Shellac is the newest way to make your nails look picture perfect! This new manicure treatment promises smudge-proof nail color that lasts for weeks without chipping. Some call it a manicure miracle! The special formula, brushes on just like regular nail polish. Nails are prepped in the same manner as a basic manicure. The difference is that Shellac offers a more nail-friendly solution by taking gel to the next level -- no sculpting or filing, just thin coats of polish on your natural nail, with a brief time for curing under a UV lamp between each coat. Since these UV lights are almost the same as tanning beds.

56 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 49

The experts at D’Xache recommend to put on a waterproof sunscreen on hands at least 30 minutes before going for the manicure. When the top coat is done, you get a quick shine with a soft cloth and alcohol and you’re ready to go. But Shellac is not for everyone. Your natural nails and nail beds must be healthy. If they’re splitting, peeling or damaged from using acrylic or gel enhancements, you should wait until your nails are completely healed.

SAY GOOD-BYE Why Shellac you say? It gives you a 14 -day flawless wear, an incredible mirror shine and has an easy, non damaging removal (compared to acrylics).

Probably one of the biggest benefits to Shellac is that it is cured by UV light within minutes compared to regular nail polish which can take several hours to cure. It looks and feels just like regular nail polish, not thick and heavy like gels or acrylics. You can choose from a variety of colors. The procedure costs a bit more than a regular manicure, but it is certainly worth every penny.

To nicks, chips and smudges

SAY HELLO To Shellac.
