GIRLS ON THE RUN INSPIRING GIRLS TO LIVE OUTSIDE THE “GIRL BOX”

By: Gladys Villarreal | Photography by: Girls On The Run RGV

G

irls on the Run is a program dedicated to inspire girls to choose life outside the “Girl Box.” “The Girl Box” is a place where many girls begin to morph into what they think they should be instead of being who they really are.” “We envision a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams” “I feel that way when I get back from a run, when I’m red faced and sweaty, I never feel more beautiful than at that time” and that’s why I always tell the girls that’s my most beautiful moment. “We definitely need this in the Valley more than ever.” _Natalie Sales Girls On The Run is a non-profit organization, founded in 1996 by a woman named Molly Barker 16 years ago in Charlotte North Carolina.Growing up being a runner and a tri-athlete as a teenager, she realized how many things come in the way of just her being her greatest self; boys came around and nasty girls that weren’t so nice to her, and nasty teachers. Molly described that many girls taught to get into a “Girl Box” where they are suppose to wear make-up and wear pretty clothes; and how they’re not suppose to be athletic. She felt that

20 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 49

so many girls were missing out on so much, all the great stuff that comes along with being athletic as far as team building and friendships that can’t be broken, your teammates sticking up for you because they’re your teammates. Molly tells the story of how one day she went for a run and she just realized that’s when she feels her best. After that run molly sat down and wrote the curriculum “I know that these girls need this” she said. After completing the curriculum she handed it over to a mentor of hers, to get a second opinion. Molly feeling nervous about the whole idea, mainly because she had never prepared or done anything like this before, she was called the very next day by her mentor inviting her to lunch. That’s where she told Molly “this is wonderful! now you need to decide whether you’re going to keep this to yourself or you’re going to share this with the world.” Molly started the program shortly after, working with public schools there in Charlotte and then it just grew and spread like a wild fire. 16 years later, Girls On The Run is all over the nation, in schools, churches etc. How Natalie Sales became involved: Two years ago my friend Kendra and I both being personal trainers, we thought, fitness

shouldn’t be just for people that can afford it, it should be for everyone. A lot of kids are not getting that much fitness either at school or at home. “I have daughters, and every morning as I dropped them off at their elementary school I thought I just can’t do anything anymore” (Natalie Sales) Kids either grow up in a household where parents do not know about healthy eating and healthy habits and being active or many of these kids (preferably girls) have already fallen into this “Girl Box.” Kendra’s mother teaches piano in Dallas where they have an existing chapter of Girls On The Run, and she told her: “These girls come in for their piano lessons and they have their Girls On The Run t-shirts on and they are just “wild for life” Kendra looked into this program when she realized the large start up cost, it’s like a franchise fee but for a non-profit, because Molly Barker wrote this curriculum and had done all the research that went into the program, there was a cost to bring the program down here to the Valley. Kendra had just written it off because of the high cost. When we started talking and she told me about the program, I went home and researched it a bit further I discovered that Austin, Houston and Dallas were the only places in Texas that had the program.

the program to

the Valley

I thought this is exactly what we need in the Valley. Now the Rio Grande Valley is the fourth territory in Texas with the program. That was two years ago. We started with the Los Fresnos School system where we spoke to the superintendent about the program. He absolutely loved the idea and with a lot of encouragement he said “However we can get the funding to do this lets just do it, we will find a way whether it was through grants, private donors etc let’s just get it done.”

RECREATION | GIRLS ON THE RUN

Bringing

We started this last year with Los Fresnos Elementary School with 12 girls, and that was such a great experience because at the beginning of the program we cover self-esteem and having a healthy body image. Negative self talk: how all girls including myself we do the whole “I don’t look good in this skirt or do I look fat in this.” We came up with a sound or a word that we say when we start talking negative about ourselves. That makes the girls realize that they are talking bad about themselves, and there is no need for that in our life. In one of the very first lessons, we all sit around in a circle when we meet, and we go around the circle and each girl says “I feel beautiful when…or I’ am beautiful when.”

THE CURRICULUM 3rd-5th graders are together. 6-8th graders are together (they have a different curriculum that program is called Girls On Track) they deal with bigger issues like cyber bullying, boyfriends, drugs and a lot of heavier issues. The program only lets you start with 12 girls the first semester, just to get your feet wet. You get the curriculum, a box of materials (everything is a game that’s why you have the box of materials) not all of it is running, it’s not a running club, it’s so much more than that. At the end of the mission statement it says “and use running as a tool” running is secondary; the curriculum is the “meat and potatoes” of the program. •They meet twice a week for an hour. •All the activities are non competitive, there’s no time keeping during these runs, no placing, they can run, jump or walk as long as they finish the run. Everyone gets a metal it’s just about finishing and setting a goal in life and working towards it. •By the end of the semester all the girls become great friends. •Five beads, five reasons why your awesome, the coach gives the girls a scenario about being pressured to do things like maybe cheat on a test etc. They give away a bead, and then they go to the next coach and the same thing happens; so by the end of the activity the girls realize that they have given away all their beads; which teaches them that by falling into peer pressure they give away their awesomeness.

Principles, coaches and school counselors are encouraged to be a part of this awesome program all the schools need to provide is a coach and a co-coach it can be a parent, a counselor, or a college student that is interested in helping. Girls on the Run international, gives you two options you can do it as an affiliate or an independent counsel, we could have either kept going with the school system and try to be an affiliate of Los Fresnos ISD or be independent and work with anyone. We felt we were lead to the independent way. Kendra and I applied and got interviewed to get the program. Once we got accepted, we flew out to North Carolina for our training.

Our coaches training will be taking place on August 3rd for this coming school year at Rancho Viejo. It’s just a one day training! Given by two certified personnel and we provide all the coaches with everything they will need. Training will be from 9am-5pm and it includes first aid and CPR certifications if you’re already certified you would only be there from 9am-2pm. Lunch is provided, and there is no cost for the training.

MAKING US PROUD | JUAN FLORES

This is one of the things that I want to change. Students change their bachelor degree within two years, in result of this they lose time, courses and money, so why not prevent that and give them a chance to have someone guide them through the process of their education. The second topic I want to improve is University Sports; as a University we don’t have that many sports and we don’t have University level teams. I want to expand the leagues so the students that have the talent, to play can have the opportunity to do it outside of their educational life, and they can have a student life, which is something we lack. The last change that I want to make is within the Student Government Association I do want some students to know that we are there, that we are available.

making a difference on campus Juan Flores

UTB GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT

By: Gladys Villarreal | Photography by: Sinthia Vera How did you become so involved with the University? When I first began at UTB I had a lot of time on my hands, I decided to put some of that time into good use by attending campus events. I began to meet new students and started networking with many staff members. I realized that being involved would grant me the opportunity to help students, and at the same time gain some experience for my future career. Did you see something wrong with University or something you didn’t agree with that gave you that push to be more involved? As students we often tend to complain and criticize what’s going on in the University, and really that’s a cultural problem not a University one. I decided to be the change that I wanted to see. I decided to grasp all the problems and obtain a solution for them. Getting involved helped me work towards progress at for students at the University and for all the residents in Brownsville.

24 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 49

What motivated you to run for Student Government Association President? All the amazing people by my side telling me that I could do it! I was involved in student council for four years when I was in High School and I did a great job, that as soon as I began my studies at UTB I wanted to continue doing something for my community. What are some of the things you want to improve for students at the University? My platform for the presidency was that I wanted to give the students an opportunity to have some sort of advising with the Association of Brownsville Educators; by also incorporating the National Education Association with the university, students can have more advising apart from the University about their careers. Many students don’t know what their career is about; all they receive is a course contract with a bunch of courses and they wonder is this really what I want to do? Are these courses going to prepare me for the future?

“I realized that more than 80% of the students didn’t know what the Student Government was and what we do” We need to change this.”

What will set you aside from former Student Government Association Presidents? I consider myself very humble, while I was walking through the school; I was asked “What are you promising?” And I said “I promise you that I will try, I will not promise anything that I know is out of my hands. I told the students that I want them to say hello when they see me, because this is home. The university I feel is my home. This is what sets me aside, I’m not taking this as only the title, I see myself as a representative to allow the students through me to let their voice be heard. What has been your biggest motivation? Since I was a kid I was always motivated to leave the “cycle of poverty” Not only in life but for my future and my kids. I want to become an educated man; I don’t want to be only known as someone that did something good for an organization, but to be seen as someone that helped his community. What message do you have for all those people that supported your campaign? I’m very thankful to the association of Brownsville educators; they supported and sponsored this initiative. I also want to thank my sister Paola who helped me throughout all the campaigning process, and the voters that believed in me.

LIFESTYLE | POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION

While the baby blues only last a few days and fade away on their own, postpartum depression is very complex and if left untreated can be quite dangerous. Signs of Postpartum Depression So how can you tell if you or your loved one is suffering from this type of depression? Some of the common signs of postpartum depression are as followed: •Difficulty bonding with the baby •Thoughts of harming the baby •Severe mood swings •Withdrawal from family and friends •Lack of concern for yourself •Loss of interest in sex •Lack of energy and motivation •Feelings of worthlessness and guilt •Changes in appetite or weight •Sleeping more or less than usual •Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide

i love my baby but... WHY DO I FEEL SO BLUE?

Courtesy of: Professional Mind Wellness Center, Brownsville, TX | For more information on diagnosing or treating postpartum depression please contact us: 956.621.0587 You’ve just given birth to a beautiful bundle of joy, and everyone is happy. Everyone, except you. As a mother if this is supposed to be a happy time, you might be asking yourself why do I feel so sad?

In this article Dr. Yahaira Espada (Board

Certified Psychiatrist) from Professional Mind Wellness Center in Brownsville, TX will explain to our readers the difference between having the baby blues and postpartum depression. She will also give us a description of the common signs of the condition. You’re not alone. Approximately 80% of women experience some depressive symptoms after childbirth. The degree of emotional vulnerability can vary from moderate to severe depression. It may occur soon after delivery or in some cases up to a year later. Most commonly, it occurs within the first three months of giving birth.

26 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 49

Having a baby can bring about a stream of emotions for everyone in the household, this is especially true for the mother. Many new moms have the baby blues right after childbirth. If you have the baby blues, you may experience mood swings, crying spells, feel sad, overwhelmed, lose your appetite and insomnia. Believe it or not, the baby blues are quite common and usually go away within a few days and shouldn’t cause concern. On the other hand the symptoms of postpartum depression last longer and are very extreme. Postpartum depression is different than these common, brief episodes. Even though it can look similar at first.

If you or a family member is experiencing any of the symptoms described above, seek immediate professional help. Untreated postpartum depression can have long lasting consequences for both mother and child. It’s definitely not something you want to ignore or be too proud to admit to. Like other conditions the sooner it is treated, the simpler it is to cure it or control it. It’s unknown why some women develop this condition and others don’t, however there are a number of risk factors that can contribute to the problem. Including; family history, substance abuse, stressful environment, depression before pregnancy and during pregnancy. These factors don’t necessarily mean that women will develop postpartum depression, but it does mean that women should get educated in this matter and watch for signs and symptoms after giving birth. If, in spite of self-help and the support of your family, you’re still having difficulty with postpartum depression, you may want to consult with a medical professional. Postpartum depression responds to the same class of treatments as regular depression. Therapy, medication, and support groups can all be helpful. Discuss these options with your doctor if this is a route you’re interesting in taking. For more information on diagnosing or treating postpartum depression, regular depression, anxiety, Schizophrenia and post traumatic stress disorder please contact Dr. Yahaira Espada at 956.621.0587 and always remember that “Mental health is as important as physical health.”

Other important hair accessories are; hairpins, clips, combs, hairnets etc. Each one would have to be decorated to match both the wedding dress and veil. You can also opt to go without a veil, and just accessorize your hair with hairpins, flowers, or feathers.

Jewelry is also as important but the best part about summer weddings is that you are not restricted to the usual diamonds and pearls.

Do you hate boring workouts or you simply don’t like to exercise? ...but do you love to dance?

I

n that case Zumba might just be what you are looking for, it’s a great way to bust some moves, learn cool choreography and stay fit without the pain of crunches and strength training.

Zumba uses upbeat Latin music, it’s aerobic dancing that’s a lot of fun and super easy to learn. Created by Colombian fitness instructor Beto Perez in 2001 and after twelve years of existence it has become a fitness movement with millions of participants all around the world. Some people say Zumba is simply addictive (in a good way), and once you are caught by the Zumba bug you just want to keep going and might even be inspired to become an instructor, like our friend Astrid Ramos owner/instructor at Baila Con Migo Fitness Studio in Brownsville,TX. If you are still a little doubtful about this type of exercise search no more! In this article instructor Astrid will answer important questions you might have about Zumba Fitness.

CAN ANYONE DO ZUMBA? Like other fitness programs it is recommended to start slowly and gradually move to a higher level. The best thing about Zumba is that it really doesn’t matter if you are fit or not when you start, or if you think you can’t dance. Zumba has many levels and you can start at a level that fits you best. Within a few weeks of program consistency you will see improvement in your whole body shape. It is an excellent way to burn calories and tone up by using all muscle groups at once. Zumba is the type of workout that elevates your heart rate therefore it is specially good for your heart and your overall health. Participants can expect to burn between 300-1000 calories per hour depending on individual weight. WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN A ZUMBA CLASS? In a Zumba class you will see people of all ages, sizes and shapes, a combination of experts and beginners; nonetheless the movements are fairly simple and it doesn’t take long to catch up.

As mentioned before, the level of intensity depends on each individual. For example a beginner might choose to just the foot motions while an expert will simultaneously do both lower and upper body motions. You can also expect to break a sweat as it is a fast-paced dancing program, it is suggested that you bring plenty of water and a small towel to wipe off the sweat. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing, such as the ones sold at Zumba.com (online store). Lastly you should expect lots of fun, booty shaking and different Latin dance styles as well as fitness exercises including; bicep curls, lunges, and other body toning movements. HOW ELSE WILL I BENEFIT FROM DOING ZUMBA? Not only will you burn calories and improve your physical health but a bonus is that mentally, you will alleviate stress, boost your brain power by learning coordination, and you will smile and sweat at the same time. After your first class you will soon find out you just can’t wait till your next class, and that’s why some people say Zumba is addictive! Before you begin any exercise program consult a doctor. Also when searching for a Zumba class be sure the class that you are interested in is legit and thought by an authorized instructor such as Astrid Ramos, there are many classes being thought by non-authorized Zumba instructors!
