SPORTS | UTPA • What are your goals for this season? My goals for this season is to obviously make it to the WAC Conference Tournament and proceed to the NCAA Tournament. But it’s also to stay consistent as a setter and person on the court. Taking one game at a time will help me to focus on these goals. I will always give my all and put out the energy for my team. With each other’s support we can make it to where we want to go. • What does the team talk about before a game? We talk about the other team and key things to be aware of when playing. With a scouting report available for us, we are able to break things down about our opponents. Our coach also talks to us about the things that our own team needs to do. He makes sure that we are aware of our opponents and ourselves. • How do you celebrate a win? When we have a win, most times we’re excited to go home and sleep, haha, but we reflect a lot on how we played and like to replay the good plays.

Nycole Masaki UTPA VOLLEYBALL PLAYER BY GLADYS CISNEROS

• Why did you choose to play Volleyball? I chose to play volleyball not only because of my passion for the sport but because it was something that I grew up around. Volleyball is a big thing in my family. My parents, aunts and uncles and cousins played volleyball and now myself. My three siblings are also apart of it, it’s just something that runs in the family. • How long have you been playing? I am going on 11 years of playing. • How has your experience been playing for UTPA? My experience has been great here at UTPA. I have great coaches who push me past my limits and give me the direction

14 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 52

that I need when I’m on the court. My team mates are the ones that give me the motivation to keep moving forward and to always go all out. I’ve had great relationships with the coaching staff and the girls that I play with. And from that, there’s great chemistry. No matter what the situation or outcome, I can always count on my team to be there, and that’s what a team should be like. • Do you have any “before game” rituals? As a team we like to listen to music to get ourselves pumped up, that helps us to build that hype we need for the court. For myself, I always drink a glass of Starbucks Vanilla Frappuccino. It’s like my energy booster, haha.

• How do you deal with a loss? When we have to deal with a loss, it’s not easy. Losing isn’t easy and it’s not fun. But, it allows us to realize what we did wrong and what we can do to fix things. It’s always a silent time after a loss but bouncing back is something that we all know we have to do. • What keeps you motivated? My goals, my team, my coaches, and our fans. Plain and simple. These factors keep me going, to do my best and give my all, to be loud and give out all my energy, and to always progress forward. My goals and the people that I am surrounded by keep me motivated to do my best. • Which volleyball player do you look up to? There are many great volleyball players out there, but I look up to my parents and all my coaches that I’ve had throughout my life. Without them I wouldn’t be where I am today and the player that I am today. • Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In five years I see myself done with school with a Masters Degree, married, and enjoying the life of working a wonderful career that I worked so hard to prepare for in college.

SPORTS | UTB

Danielle & Michelle

M A R Q U E S UTB VOLLEYBALL Players BY GLADYS CISNEROS

• What’s your position in the team? Danielle: Outside and right side hitter. Michelle: Right side and outside hitter. • Why did you choose to play Volleyball? Danielle: I had asthma problems when I was a child; I was looking for a sport that would help me breath better. My sister Michelle started playing the sport before me. Michelle: I started playing because I use to watch professional Volleyball players on TV. I then decided that I would one day want to be one of those players. I knew I had to start as soon as possible. • How long have you been playing? Danielle: 14 years. Michelle: 14 years as well. • How has your experience as a volleyball player for UTB been? Danielle: This year will be my first year playing, I’m really excited, I love the staff and the team. We all have such a great relationship and the best part is that UTB has really been our biggest supporter. Michelle: It’s been quite an experience because, my freshman year was full of unexpected surprises I tore my acl, right in the middle of the season. It took me ten months to get back on the court, then on my sophomore year we won the national championship, and last year we came in third. This year our expectations are really high we have a really good team and we are working very hard. • Do you have any “before game rituals”? Michelle: Not really just going to the training room. I’m not very superstitious. I think the only thing we do, is listen to music really loud to pump us up. • What are your goals for this season? Danielle: Win the National championship. Last year we lost, so now we want it more than ever. Michelle: My main goal is to also win the National Championship and my personal goal is to finish my senior year; healthy with no injuries.

16 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 52

From left to right: Danielle and Michelle Marques.

• What does the team talk about before a game? Michelle: We usually talk about how hard we should start off the game, not give the other team space, be loud and start talking in different languages to freak out the other team. • How do you celebrate a win? Danielle: We don’t have a particular way to celebrate. Michelle: Depending on the victory we usually run around the court. • What keeps you motivated? Danielle: The opportunity of being in a new country, being able to play with these amazing girls and attending this great university. Michelle: Also the opportunity; if we were back home we wouldn’t be able to play Volleyball, or have an education, we would probably be working trying to help out at home. Here we have a full ride scholarship, and the amazing support that the

university has given us. The other girls are in the same situation so we know that they also value this opportunity as much as we do. This is what keeps me motivated. I know that if I mess up with this I won’t get this chance again. • Which volleyball player do you look up to? Both: Clayton Stanley. He’s an amazing Volleyball player. • Where do you see yourself in five years? Danielle: I see myself already graduated, I still don’t know where I’m going to be, or if I’m going to stay here or go back home. But I really hope I get something good after all my hard work. Michelle: I plan to be in grad school and get the opportunity to work here in the U.S. this is an amazing country and I plan on staying here to help my family.

“Breast implants can raise your cancer risk.” FALSE! Women with breast implants are at no greater risk of getting breast cancer, according to research. Standard mammograms don’t always work as well on these women, however, so additional X-rays are sometimes needed to more fully examine breast tissue.

“Squeezing breasts can prevent breast cancer.” MAYBE! Laboratory experiments at the University of California have showed a little squeeze may be all that it takes to prevent malignant breast cells triggering cancer. SYMPTOMS & SIGNS “Exercise can help prevent breast cancer.” THAT’S RIGHT! • A change in how the breast or nipple feels: nipple tenderness, change in skin texture, thickening near the breast or underarm area, a lump in the breast (not all lumps are cancerous, but they should be investigated).

• A change in the breast or nipple appearance: unexplained change in size or shape of breast, dimpling, swelling (especially if on one side only), recent asymmetry of the breasts, nipple that is turned slightly inward or inverted, skin of the breast - areola - or nipple that becomes scaly, red or swollen, ridges or pitting. • Any nipple discharge: particularly clear discharge or blood discharge. It is also important to note that a milky discharge that is present when a woman is not breastfeeding should be checked by her doctor.

If you have any of these symptoms, you should tell your healthcare provider so that the problem can be diagnosed and treated.

Keeping Your Thirst

Satisfied Bartenders of Adolios

Issue 52 | Celebrityeventsmagazine.com

27

pedro saenz Adolios Bartender

Photography by: Hugo Torreblanca | Interviewed by: Gladys Cisneros

What’s the biggest obstacle you have faced as a bartender? I haven’t had any obstacles in the companies that I have worked at. Nonetheless, the biggest obstacle I can think of when changing jobs is getting involved with co-workers. Other than that, I haven’t had to face any obstacles because I know how to work well and keep good relations with co-workers. What’s the best part about working for Adolios? It has been the biggest experience I’ve had so far. Alvin Romero, Jorge Castorena, Marcos Romero Jr. y el Senor Marcos Romero gave me the opportunity and freedom to create a menu. The opportunity of implementing ideas that no other restaurant has at Brownsville; this is what makes Adolios a unique restaurant. What sets Adolios aside from other bars? First of all, the beautiful way the bar is designed. Also, we have a first class chef, a great variety of margaritas and martinis. Furthermore, we have our own brand of shots and exclusive drinks that we as bartenders create in our menu. What inspired you to choose bartending as a career? I enjoy interacting with people. I worked for many years on TV, but working on TV was more

28 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 52

of a hobby for me. I have always liked bartending and I take pleasure serving to the people. Where do you see yourself in five years? We see Adolios in other cities like Austin and San Antonio, and in five years I see myself as the Bar Manager or Bartender Coach at one of those cities. What advice do you have for future bartenders? The biggest advice I can give them is to be patient. Patience is key to achieve a higher level in the work environment; also, use every effort to do a good job. What was your inspiration for creating some of the drinks for the Adolios menu? It came from a very motivating person, Marco Romero Jr. He is very professional. One day, he came up to me and told me: “Do something that you have never done in your life, and what you do will become something big.” His words inspired me deeply, and I thank God because the people liked what was created. What’s your biggest fear of being a bartender? No fears. What’s the easiest way a customer can get your attention when they’re sitting at the bar? I don’t wait for customers to get my attention, I give the attention to the customer. The moment they come through the door I have their drink ready for when they sit at the bar. I will acknowledge them with respect and welcome them to Adolios.

What’s one thing customers shouldn’t do to bartenders? I believe as a bartender you should already be aware that one would deal with different types of people. Being a respectful person or not, always approach the people with respect. How do you feel about the pressure that comes with being the bar manager at Adolios? I feel good! I love the pressure. I never had a job where I worked under pressure and this job has been the best I’ve had. I feel great that Marco Romero Jr., Alvin Romero and Jorge Castorena believed in me for this position. How do you feel when a customer over tips you? I feel really good because we have accomplished our mission to give a great service. If you didn’t visit Adolios you didn’t visit Brownsville. What’s your bartending personality? Kind and smiley! What keeps you going throughout a long shift at work? The positive energy and constant movement around me gets me through the night. I don’t drink energy drinks or anything of the sort because I have enough fuel with the people’s energy. What’s your bartending secret? To be myself in the bar and to attend the customer with a smile on my face.

What’s the biggest obstacle you have faced as a bartender? Learning to keep every drink in mind and knowing that every drink has to come out perfect. What’s the best part about working for Adolios? The clientele, my co-workers, and the environment is different from a club. I came from a bar scene to working at Adolios, and I have to say Adolios is a lot classier. What sets Adolios aside from other bars? The clientele, it’s more upscale. What inspired you to choose bartending as a career? It’s something I love to do. My parents always told me “choose something you love to do cause every day you will never work”. Where do you see yourself in five years? Hopefully in five years I will be running an Adolios. What advice do you have for future bartenders? Never give up, always try new things. Don’t let people bring you down; you always have to work your way up. What was your inspiration for creating some of the drinks that you have created for the Adolios menu? So I can get my name out there, I’m different from a regular bartender; I’m not really just a bartender, you tell me what you want and I will make it, you tell me what you want to taste and I will make you a drink with that taste.

What’s your biggest fear of being a bartender? No fear What’s the easiest way a customer can get your attention when they’re sitting at the bar? Call me by my name. What if it’s a new customer? I will make sure to come up to a new customer and introduce myself. What’s one thing customers shouldn’t do to bartenders? Banging on the bar, or waving their drink at us. I find that very disrespectful. I always make sure that all my customers have everything they need before they ask me. What’s your bartending personality? I’m really down to earth, happy and easy to talk to. Tell me about your tattoos? To me this is about art work. My body is my art, every tattoo has a meaning behind it, and it’s not just something that I randomly picked out of a magazine.

“Never give up, always try new things. Don’t let people bring you down; you always have to work your way up.” What bartender do you look up? Nano, He’s a bartender at the Bar, he’s not only a bartender but he’s a mixalogist, he also does a lot of flaring and well he’s a great bartender. What keeps you going throughout a long shift at work? Making sure everyone is happy; making sure everyone has a great experience. Do you do anything before work to get you pumped? Trance music What’s your bartending secret? It’s a secret.

Do you think you will become the next flaring champion of the Valley? I’m trying to get there; I do flare with other bartenders, so I will be coming out in some competitions. Issue 52 | Celebrityeventsmagazine.com

What sets Adolios apart from other bars? Adolios keeps it classy; we are a team here and everyone helps each other out in every way to make sure everything flows as smooth as possible even with the large amount of people we get every weekend. Where do you see yourself five years from now? Hopefully still here in Adolios this is a great place to work at. What’s your biggest fear of being a bartender? Not being able to learn more, like if people keep asking for the same thing and I don’t learn those drinks. You’ve only been here for four months so far how has your experience been? I feel like a sponge, Roland and Peter have been teaching me a lot and I’m just absorbing everything I can, I feel like I’ve been given a great opportunity here in Adolios.

LIFESTYLE | LADIES’ NIGHT

13 to do on Ladies’ th in gs

NIGHT BY KELLY THORE

If it’s been more than two weeks since your last girls night out, it’s time to make moves. Experts say that good friendships literally make you healthier—increasing your life span, boosting your immune system, and making you feel generally happier as a whole. And in case you need fresh, lady approved ideas for things to do, check these out!

1

Host a wine-tasting party. And by that we mean go buy a bunch of cheapish bottles, then sit around with your girlfriends sipping the different kinds while saying fancy things about their bouquets.

2

Buy a random activity Groupon for something you’ve never done before, and treat your friend to an afternoon of it. Nothing says bestie bonding time like indoor skydiving or BYOB pottery.

3

Grab a bunch of penis paraphernalia and a fake veil from a local sex shop, and hit up your favorite circuit of bars like you’re at a bachelorette party. Take turns being the brideto-be, dancing like it’s your last night of being a free agent.

6

Hole up in your kitchen with a friend or two and attempt to invent the next brownie-like concoction, filled with your favorite junk foods. Cookie dough candy bar cupcakes? There’s no way this could turn out badly.

10

7

11

Glam up, and then take turns snapping future Facebook profile pictures of one another. Since the pics won’t be gratuitously self-taken, your peeps will just assume you were caught at a house party or something looking fabulous as always (not scouring through the reels to find your hottest angle).

4

8

5

9

Scour YouTube for makeup tutorials together to get some new going-out ideas. Take turns practicing them on each other until your Megan Fox-esque smoky eye is on point. Go to a fancy home store and window shop with a friend, taking turns imagining what your house will look like in 10 years when you’ve made it big. It’s like the adult version of M.A.S.H.

36 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 52

Pull up your Netflix and have a Channing Tatum movie marathon together. Take a healthy sip of your cocktail whenever he pops up shirtless. Snag a few cool craft ideas from Pinterest and gather your BFF for a night of DIY. Your inner Martha will be stoked, and you’re guaranteed to have a blast even if those homemade tile coasters come out looking questionable.

Challenge two or three of your friends to a Just Dance competition on the Wii—just as awesome as going out to dance, but sans the hour-long prep-work. Whoever comes closest to nailing Beyoncé’s patented shake is champ. Go out to your favorite restaurant and order the least sexy, most delicious entrées you both never order on dates. You know she’s going to call you tomorrow regardless.

12

Hit up that store you can’t really afford and splurge on a new dress or bag— both of you. What are best friends for, if not to alleviate shopping guilt?

13

Grab two racquets and head to a nearby court for an endorphin-spiking, calorie-torching game of tennis—seriously. It’s the easiest sport to pretend to know how to play, plus you get to wear skirts and leap through the air.

FITNESS AND DIET DEBUNKED

BY MICHELLE MELGAR

There are many misconceptions about fitness and diet like starving oneself before a workout in order to increase the amount of body fat lost or the notion that the heavier the weights the better. However, ideas such as these aren’t true. Dr. Christopher Ledingham and Dr. Murat Karabulut of the Human and Health Department at the University of Texas at Brownsville have given us ways to improve our workout, diet, and overall health.

eat smart

Before a workout, try not to eat too large of a meal. You should eat at least 2 to 3 hours before you exercise in order to improve performance. When the stomach is trying to digest, it needs blood which is also needed by the working muscles. That is why eating before an exercise will cause problems. So, eat something light and healthy like apples or crackers to give you just enough boost. After a workout, it is important to eat smart. You should replace the glucose

46 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 52

lost during a workout within 30 minutes to 4 hours after activity. An example of an excellent post-workout meal would be a cup of low-fat chocolate milk (to replace the sugars lost) and a healthy, turkey sandwich. On another note, if at all possible, eat fresh homemade foods.

hot or cold

The best temperature for a post-workout shower is cool. If the shower water is too hot, it’ll increase the body’s core temperature; however, if the shower water is too cold, it can constrict blood vessels and may cause heart problems, especially for individuals with an already pre-existing condition.

hollywood diet

Extreme diets don’t work. They are disguised for short-term, rapid weight loss and aren’t exactly good for the human body. Usually, what is lost during these extreme diets are water weight and muscle mass. Additionally, the loss of body fat is minimal and the quality of the workout ends up suffering. However, if you

increases active tissue (aka muscle mass) and decreases inactive tissue (aka fat). Weight training also increases strength and endurance. Be mindful, though. Choose weights you can lift more than 12 to 20 times without struggle. Don’t try to lift anything heavier or else it may cause serious injury.

hidden dangers

Energy drinks are, generally, not good. There are stimuli other than caffeine that may pose hidden dangers for the human body. Additionally, with the high content of sugar found in energy drinks, the body will burn these sugars first before burning off body fat.

stretch till it hurts

Stretching helps to improve range of motion. However, the notion that you have to stretch till you feel pain is a misconception. If not done properly, stretching may increase the chance of injury. So, instead of stretching till you feel pain, stretch only till you feel a bit of discomfort.

diet pills

There are two classes of diet pills. The first is herbal and pills that fall under this category are not regulated by the FDA. These pills contain stimulants and can possibly change how the body uses energy. The second class not only impacts how the body uses energy but may also block certain hormones that notify us when we’re hungry.

avoiding injury

The best way to avoid injury is proper technique and knowing your limits.

be served, half empty. Unfortunately our kids have become stagnant because of how we have let technology take over. Our kids no longer go outside and play because we allow them to stay inside in the AC and play on their game systems, iPads, iPhones, etc. (Believe me I am guilty of this as well with my youngest daughter who is in the picture with me.) Then when it comes to playing sports in middle school

MANUEL GOMEZ HEAD FOOTBALL COACH AT HARLINGEN CARDINALS Photography by: Hugo Torreblanca

My name is Manuel “Manny” Angel Gomez. I was born in San Benito, Texas. Yes, San Benito. I am married to my beautiful wife Melissa Gomez who is originally from Eagle Pass, Texas. We have two beautiful daughters. Alysa, a sophomore and Varsity cheerleader at Harlingen High, and Alexis, a fourth grader at Calvary Christian School. I have been asked to write a short message for this magazine however, those who really know me understand that it is not possible for me to be brief when I write or speak something, but here it goes. I truly believe that there is nothing more important in a young kids life than a great support system which without a doubt should be spear headed by us parents!

52 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 52

Being a devoted Christian myself, I also highly advocate the fact that you must plug in somewhere or somehow to embed and create a relationship with the man upstairs so he can help us adapt and overcome any trials or tribulations which we will come across in this short lifetime! With that being said, let me get back on subject. I am sure that we have all come across that saying about seeing the glass half empty or half full. In a perfect world we would like to surround ourselves with ‘half full’ positive people, but unfortunately it doesn’t work that way. The book of Mark 10:43 reads, “The greatest of all should be the servant of all.” This scripture in a nutshell is telling us to serve, half full, and not

The approach that has helped me with my players and my daughters is to let them know your expectations of them. You must also have consequences in black and white and must be consistent. As soon as something goes wrong everyone will be watching how you handle it and either learn from it or learn to manipulate it. Last but not least, give them that pep talk. Let them know that you love them and care about them and that no matter what you will always be there for them. That means getting off that conference call or pausing the football game on Monday night and being the greatest listener of all time. Understand that listening is probably the least emphasized pillar in leadership that is practiced. We as fathers are the ones that need to grab the bull by the horns and lead by example when tough times present themselves within our families. We need to bring hope to our kids’ mindset. I have a saying that I shared with my oldest daughter the other day and it reads, “Tough times do not last but tough people do.” Besides being the example, the listener, the role model, the disciplinarian (bad guy), the motivator, the shoulder to cry on, we must also be their friend. Respectively, Manny Gomez Christian, Husband, Father, Brother, Son, Uncle, Friend, Athletic Coordinator, Head Football Coach.

Carnivore to Vegetarian Tips on becoming a vegetarian. BY JESSICA PERALES

For most people, the idea of becoming a vegetarian sounds more like a restrictive, grueling way to live. While a vegetarian diet may not be for everyone, becoming a vegetarian does not have to be about depriving yourself or feeling miserable about what you eat. Being a vegetarian is about helping the environment and living a cleaner, healthier lifestyle all around. It is impressive the difference a single diet change can be in your life. However, the transition for meat eaters is not always so smooth. Here are a few tips to make becoming a vegetarian a breeze.

Read up

Becoming more informed about the benefits of becoming a vegetarian, give you good reason to continue with the endeavor even when it gets tough. If you are becoming a vegetarian just for fun, chances are you will not stick to it for very long. Look for some motivation. Read up and get informed about the effects that meat has on the environment and on your body. You may be surprised with what you find. Also learn about what other vegetarians are doing with their diets and how it has changed their lives. Alicia Silverstone wrote The Kind Diet, a guide to a plant-

56 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 52

based diet, and includes several recipes of her own. This is one of many sources available to new vegetarians looking for some guidance in their new lifestyle.

Gradual transition

You most certainly do not have to quit “cold turkey.” Like any other lifestyle change, it can be difficult. Therefore, aim to make it a gradual transition. Learn about which meat groups and try to completely cut one from your diet in a certain time span. To start, maybe give yourself two to three months to remove beef and pork from your diet. Move onto another meat group when you feel comfortable enough. Aim to remove all meats within a year.

Cook at home

For most people, poor diet decisions are made when they eat out too often. It is easy to cave into temptation when you constantly find yourself at the drive thru window, so try to eat at home. This will give you the perfect opportunity to experiment with new foods and make meatless versions of some of your already favorite dishes. You will get more bang for your buck, and chances are you will also feel a lot better than if you had downed that bacon cheeseburger.

Explore

Being a vegetarian does not mean your diet is made up of lettuce and water. There are so many different kinds of food that can provide you with more flavor and nutrients than any meat group. Also do not be afraid to explore and try new and interesting food. Visit local (and online) health food stores or restaurants. It will expand your food groups and introduce you to all the tasty options there are to choose from.

Support

Tell your friends and family about the change you are trying to make in your life. Therefore building a support group will give you that extra push that you need to keep you on track. Give them information and let them know the reasons for your lifestyle change. If the people around you know what you are trying to do, it may even inspire them to join you. The more the merrier! Even if you are able to become a vegetarian, you still might have a few slip-ups here and there. If that happens, don’t stress! Giving in to a craving doesn’t have to be cause for calling the whole thing off—just start again the next day.
