LIFESTYLE | STRESS RELIEVING
healthy ways to relieve STRESS & ANXIETY BY MICHELLE MELGAR
Ever find yourself chewing away at your #2 pencil? Are you the type to constantly reach for those colorful little stress balls? Do you overly-indulge yourself in fatty foods or in alcohol just to find relief from all the stress pent up inside of you? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, then we have a healthy solution for you. Many times, when people reach for that box of doughnuts or bottle of wine, they are reaching for comfort foods, thinking the foods themselves are what are relieving their stress or anxiety problems. However, according to registered and licensed dietitian, Jon R. Gonzalez, there are no specific foods scientifically proven to relieve anxiety or stress. “I certainly don’t recommend alleviating something as serious as anxiety with something that could potentially develop into a much more serious problem like high blood pressure, diabetes, or alcoholism,” Gonzalez said. “With that said, I do believe that a normal, healthy, and balanced diet along with a healthy exercise program could,
10 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 53
in fact, help alleviate the severity and frequency of anxiety symptoms.” Gonzalez states that an appropriately portioned combination of lean proteins (like baked chicken or fish), natural and whole-grain carbohydrates (like oatmeal, brown rice, or sweet potato), with fruits and vegetables consists of a healthy and balanced diet. Additionally, he suggests regular exercise as simple as walking for a minimum of 30 minutes a day may tremendously help in managing anxiety and stress.
Laughter is, as they have long said, the best medicine
However, in addition to living a healthy lifestyle, Gonzalez recommends that you should consult your physician if there is anything else that can be medically done to help in managing stress or anxiety as they can range from mild to severe. In addition, all natural remedies, such as
sleeping, is another stress reducer. Sleep is so crucial to living a vital life. Ensuring you get enough sleep but not too much can be a tricky balancing act. Most adults need about six to nine hours of sleep per day, preferably in one stretch and while it’s dark. Getting enough quality sleep will help reduce stress levels. After all, think about how cranky you or loved ones or coworkers can get when they don’t get enough sleep! Laughter is, as they have long said, the best medicine, and that is the case with stress relief too. Laughing regularly has been shown in research studies to do everything from helping hospital patients heal faster, utilizing medication better, decreasing depression and helping to manage stress. Mostly, if you want to reduce stress, you should replace as many stressful situations in your life with fun situations as much as possible. You can’t avoid stress completely, but you can enjoy yourself most of the time, and then the stressful situations are simply less stressful.

MAKING US PROUD | ENROLLMENT CENTER
UTB Enrollment Center by Michelle Melgar Tired of having to roam all over campus to get things like your financial aid or graduation registration done? Well, UT Brownsville’s new Enrollment Center @ The Tower is now the campuses one-stop service destination for any new, transfer, or returning student. We asked the Executive Director of Enrollment Services, Nikkie Hodgson, for more details on the subject.
Where is the new Enrollment Center located? The UTB Enrollment Center is located on University Blvd in the blue-tiled, domed tower of the Main Building (formerly known as the Education and Business Complex). Additionally, right across from the Enrollment Center is the campuses Academic Advising Center.
What are the business hours for the Enrollment Center? The center is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. Extended hours on Tuesdays till 7pm are now available in order to accommodate night students. Exactly what departments can be found in the Enrollment Center? The Enrollment Center has all the services that were previously located in Tandy Hall. The offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, Transfer, Veterans, Cashiers, Registrar’s (transcripts, graduation, etc.), and Campus Police are all located within the center. What are some of the new features the Enrollment Center is doing for students? The center has a team of enrollment specialists that are available to assist with the admission application (ApplyTexas) and Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA-UTB Code 030646). Additionally, computers and plugin stations are made available to students for online applications within the center and can be accessed during their office hours. If interested in visiting the “New UTB” campus, tours are available and the center encourages you to contact them to schedule a tour today (956-882-8295).
14 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 53
How does the Enrollment Center plan to accommodate the influx of students who visit during peak times? The center provides cross-training to all its full-time, part-time, and student employees so that, during peak times, employees from different departments can help as many students as possible.
“
The center encourages high school students to begin their college readiness process during the fall semester of their senior year.
”
What should a senior in high school be doing to get ready for college and who can assist them with that process? The center encourages high school students to begin their college readiness process during the fall semester of their senior year. Parents can also begin by encouraging their children to do some career and college exploration, to attend college planning events at their high school or on university campuses, complete the ApplyTexas college admissions application (ApplyTexas.org), take or retake the ACT or SAT exam and TSI (Texas Success Initiative) exams (utb.edu/Testing), research important deadlines colleges or universities have, and contact a UTB Enrollment Specialist to get guidance on the college enrollment process. Where can I get more information about the UTB Enrollment Center? Visit utb.edu and click on the Enrollment Center @ The Tower, call the center at 956-882-8295 or “like” their page at facebook.com/UTB.enroll for current UTB enrollment information.

and Apple Sauce w/Broccoli & Berry Walnut Brown Rice Pilaf You will need: • 1 lb Pork Loin • 1 Sprig of Thyme • 1 Sprig of Fresh Sage • 1 Sprig of Rosemary • 2 Garlic Cloves • 1 teaspoon of Salt • 1 teaspoon of Pepper • 2 oz of oil
Directions:
Season the pork loin with salt and pepper, in a hot skillet add oil, whole crushed clove of garlic, thyme, sage leafs and rosemary and sear the pork loin on all sides. The loin will continue to cook outside the oven for a few minutes.

RIO GRANDE VALLEY
EXCEPTIONAL BUSINESS PEOPLE What has been your most effective marketing tactic or technique? Our most effective marketing tactic is word of mouth. Being a locally owned business, we are challenged and have a very tight budget when it comes to marketing. We take full advantage of pleasing and going above and beyond our customers’ expectations every time a customer visits. With that being said, our food, environment, quality of service has to be great every day! How important have good employees been to your business? Good employees are not only important to business, they are essential. By hiring great people in each position, your odds of success go way up. Employees are the heart and soul of a business. They are the mechanism that makes a business run. They are what enable a business to be something more than an idea. A business cannot run unless someone is doing the work. Any intelligent business owner should want good employees to represent the business they created. What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful man? 1. Family – This is my foundation, my rock and why I do what I do. 2. Dream BIG and have passion. If you don’t dream then there is no goal to achieve. 3. Believing in yourself is essential, even when no one else believes in you, and you’ve failed a few times. That belief that you can do it, that it will work out, and that you are on the right path is critical to your success. Believe it can happen!
daniel pompa Wing Barn Chef
Who has been your greatest inspiration? Our greatest inspiration has been our parents. We both have learned that life is not easy, there are ups and downs and you have to fight through it all. But through hard work, determination, family and believing in yourself you can accomplish your goals.
How do you find people to bring into your business that truly care about it the way you do? What makes you stand out from other Restaurants? What makes us stand out from other restaurants is our food and environment. At Wing Barn, we have a rustic country atmosphere, country music playing, wood picnic tables, pale bucket lights, big screen TV’s and projector screens. There is nothing like it in the RGV. All of our 20 sauces including our lava sauce (hottest in the valley) are made from scratch, we hand bread our own Boneless Wings, Colossal Onion Rings, Fried Pickles, Fried Mushrooms, We cut our French Fries Fresh every day. We offer homemade Potato Chips and Sweet Potato Fries and not to mention our deep fried oreos. You can taste the difference! Now a day’s many restaurants, especially big chain wing restaurants, receive their food and sauces which are made somewhere else and ready to be cooked or used. We do things a lot different.
What are the most crucial things you have done for Wing Barn? There are so many things we have done for Wing Barn, but I would say the most crucial thing we have done is grow our company in a short time frame. We started Wing Barn in May 2010 on Boca Chica Blvd. in Brownsville, TX with 10 employees. With a lot of hard work, dedication and a great staff, we have been fortunate to grow to 3 locations in Brownsville and a 4th location coming soon to Harlingen, TX located at 1306 N. Ed Carey Drive. I am proud to say we will employ 45-50 employees.
20 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 53
I try to hire people that understand our culture and who we are as a company. I look for employees that don’t just work for a paycheck but want to work with a company that they believe in. I try to create an environment where input is wanted and needed from every employee. You can’t implement every idea but you can always make employees feel valued for their ideas. Employees care about your business… but only when you prove you care about them first.
RELATIONSHIPS | TIPS FOR MEN
FIRST DATE
TIPS FOR MEN
BY EDGAR CARIAGA
Going on a first date can sometimes be challenging for a guy. You may not know what to wear, what to say, where you should take her, or what’s the appropriate time to pick her up. A couple of ladies suggested a few things that men should do and not do on a first date.
on the top of the list for a woman, opening the door for her, pulling out the chair, asking what she would like to eat, and being attentive are ways to impress her.
wine & dine
If the guy will be picking up the girl, being on time or being 5 minutes early is always crucial. Being punctual will demonstrate that you care and that you’re excited for the date. No girl wants to be waiting for the guy to arrive. It also works the same way for when they’re both meeting up at the chosen place. The guy should not be late to meet the girl, that’s an immediate turn off, and she might take it as an insult.
When choosing the place for a first date, according to some girls, creativity is a plus. Not only going out to eat, but something different. For example taking her to the park for a nice picnic is something not all guys do. If you are not a creative guy, take her to the movies. Ask her what she wants to watch or choose something that you know she might like. Do not take her to an expensive restaurant because that is considered showing off. Take her to a nice place but not too expensive. Knowing what to talk about is always important.
dress to impress
talk that talk
early bird
What to wear on a first date is the least of a guy’s concern, but according to women, men that wear a nice button down shirt and pants always looks nice for a first date. Depending on the place where you’re going, try to wear something nice for the occasion. Avoid a t-shirt and jeans. Being a gentleman is always
22 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 53
She wants to know you are interested in her, so ask her questions about her. Demonstrate you want to know a little bit about her, without interrogating her with uncomfortable questions. Many girls suggested that guys should never answer text messages or phone calls in the middle of a conversation, because
they might take it as a sign of boredom. Always have your phone in your pocket or on vibrator. If you must answer a phone call or text message, make sure to excuse yourself and answer it somewhere else. Make sure to never bring up the “exes” on a conversation. That is considered very rude and a definite no for a second date. Overall, no matter how bad the date was the guy should always pay the check to be polite. Furthermore, not all girls are impressed with how much money you waste on a first date, but how much effort you put on it. Being polite and attentive are necessary if you want a second date. Try to always look presentable even if the date is outdoors. Have a good time and try to be yourself. That will attract her even more. Just remember, even if the date is going really, really well, don’t push for the sleep over. After all, it’s always nice to have something to look forward to and, when all is said and done, she’ll fancy you a gentleman.

RELATIONSHIPS | DATING TIPS
THINK LIKE A Woman
ACT LIKE A MAN BY MICHELLE MELGAR
Hey, men. Do you have a hard time understanding women? Do you ever wonder why they do the things that they do? We interviewed several women to explain the inner workings of the female mind in order to possibly make your lives easier (in regards to the opposite sex).
louder than words
Actions speak louder than words. So, match your words to your actions because it will prove to women that you are consistent and trustworthy. If you tell a woman that you love her, back it up by showing her. If you tell a woman that you’ll be there for her, be there for her. If you can’t keep your word, then chances are she’ll just move onto the next one.
chivalry is not dead
Not all women fall for jerks or bad boys. There are women still out there who appreciate it when a man opens the door for her or offers her his jacket when she’s cold. Being a gentleman also doesn’t mean you’re “whipped”. It just means that you know how to treat a woman with respect and decency. So, please do.
28 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 53
open your ears
Women are natural communicators. They are much more open and willing to talk about their feelings and personal lives with others. Therefore, women like to know that you’re listening. They don’t like feeling as if they’re wasting their breath trying to communicate with you. You listening is one way to show a woman that you care.
it’s complicated
Women tend to say one thing but mean another because they don’t want to come across as too needy. Why? Women don’t like having to be placed under traditional gender roles but, secretly, like the idea of being cared for. It’s complicated.
hell hath no fury like a woman scorned
If you hurt a woman in anyway, she may eventually forgive you but she will definitely never forget. If you have ever seen the movie Mean Girls, then you have seen a glimpse at how vindictive a woman can be to those who’ve wronged her. Your best bet is to always do the right thing. You should never hurt a woman intentionally.
friend-zone
The infamous friend-zone is the one place most men don’t want to be. However, being friend-zoned is not all that bad. Not all women will sleep with the first man who shows interest. Still, she may respect and value that man enough to not completely shut them out of her life.
looks matter
Sorry to say, but looks do matter to a certain extent. Scientifically speaking, people tend to feel more comfortable around those they find attractive than those they don’t. Furthermore, physical appearance is what attracts people to one another. So, if you want to try and pick up a woman, don’t do it while looking like a bum because, more often than not, she won’t be interested.
money, money, money
Yup, you guessed it. Women find men with fairly decent paying jobs and goals attractive because it says security. Security, for women, is important because it means a stable and secure future for any of their prospective children.

the social age Is social media ruining our social skills?
BY JESSICA PERALES
Social media has taken over the world at lightning speed and has become one of the most popular and preferred mediums of communication. Almost everyone these days have some kind of social profile. It has become such a fun and easy way for people to put themselves out there and communicate with others. Today’s generation has created fast communication, a completely new and unique style than standard communication. Especially in the hectic and fast paced world people grow up in today, social skills are more commonly being developed through social media. Consequently, there has been a clear increase in communication via the Internet, but one must wonder how the quality of this communication is changing. People have become more comfortable communicating from behind a screen that they are harming their real life social skills. They are constantly attached to their phones and computers, absorbed by the online universe. It has become a social norm to communicate through social media rather than actually speaking to each other in person. Through social media, people tend to be more honest and direct, but do not display the same courage in real life.

ways have with her, and where she sees herself in the near future. When doing makeup, Marifer Seguy has no actual method, it’s the magic and enthusiasm she puts in the process that motivates her to make the person feel and look beautiful. Marifer frequently uses MAC, Pret-APorter, Urban Decay, and Makeup Forever when she is doing makeup. One of the tips Marifer gives a woman for her everyday look is to go for something simple, but at the same time very effortless and elegant. Doing a very natural look with a pop of red or fiuscha lips will give a “chic” look. The “it” colors for this year’s atumn/winter season are red and purple for the lips, with a smokey or golden eye to make the woman look edgy and fierce. The color red is always “in” because it makes women look sexier. Marifer mentions she recently worked for several important commercials such as, Pepsi and Nylon magazine. She has also been doing makeup for Urban Outfitters, FIDEM University, and for Playboy magazine. One of her favorite looks she has ever done, the Prada look, was for Lydia Hearst, very simple and natural with little makeup.

Every girl should always have these items in her makeup bag because a girl always needs a retouch.” In the near future Marifer hopes to keep on doing makeup for fashion shows, because of the rush and adrenaline that’s happening backstage. She also hopes to own a line of cosmetics and open a salon here in The Valley.

HOLIDAYS | MANAGING TIME
3
Limit commitments. Although we all wish we could be in more than one place at a time, it is not quite possible. So do not overwhelm yourself by squeezing too many social commitments onto your calendar. Sift through your holiday party invites and determine which ones you will attend and which ones you will decline. In the end, managing and limiting your list of commitments can take a lot of stress out of the holidays and give you more time to do the things you enjoy.
4
Leave room for you. There is only so much anyone can accomplish in a day, a weekend, or a holiday season. You do not want to spend the holidays feeling drained and crabby. Sometimes everyone just needs a little ‘me time’ to do exactly what they want to do. Keep yourself healthy and unplug from social media because you will be help to no one if you run yourself ragged. So rest when you need to and spread the word that you do not want to be disturbed for the moment.
6for MANAGING tips
HOLIDAY STRESS
BYJESSICA PERALES
Upcoming holidays mean more time for family bonding, gatherings with friends, and relaxation for days. Right? In reality, they tend to overwhelm us with stress and pressure. With the holidays just around the corner, it is only a matter of time before the mall parking lots are packed and everyone is scrambling around to find that perfect gift. By the time it is all said and done with, we usually forget the real reason for the season. Here are some tips to keep your head on straight and help you make the most of the holiday season.
1
Plan ahead. Pull out a calendar and see what is to come in the following months. Decide whether or not you will be hosting any events or get-togethers. Collect and sort through any invites you may have to parties, gatherings, events, or functions.
44 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 53
Present any potential travel plans to family members and determine whether it is something you’d like to do. Write down what needs to be done, but do not be afraid to edit as time goes by. Aim to have a final game plan ready at least a month before the holidays and refer back to it frequently.
2
Shop smart. Do not add to your stress by leaving your holiday shopping until December. Last thing you want is to be trapped in a crowded department store digging through the hectic mess left behind by the early bird shoppers. Online shopping is another convenient option that can save you lots of time and money, but be sure to stay on top of shipping deadlines so all your gifts make it under the tree on time.
5
Accept help. Do not try doing everything on your own. Chances are you will feel overwhelmed and unappreciated when all is said and done. Outsource whatever you can to lighten your workload. Assign decorating tasks to family members or ask guests to bring a favorite dish of theirs. Many businesses provide services during the holidays as well. Have your holiday dinner catered or hire a cleaning company to help spruce up after the holiday. Sharing the duties of preparing for the holidays will surely save on time and sanity.
6
Remember the reason for the season. What is really important to you? One thing is to plan ahead, but another is to let planning the holidays ruin the fun. Despite your greatest efforts, things are bound to go off course. However, more often than not, it is only you that knows what went wrong or uncompleted. So do not loose sleep over it. After all, the holidays are about spending time with family and loved ones. Give yourself the opportunity to relax and enjoy them.
