LIFESTYLE | CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

‘Tis the Season to Get Crafty:

REUSING & RENEWING

OLD DECORATIONS

BY JESSICA PERALES

The holidays tend to put a strain on everyone’s wallet. From shopping for the perfect gift to preparing Christmas dinner for the family, the numbers really start to add up. Decorating around the house, however, should not put a damper on your holiday. Here are some smart and crafty tips to help you scratch ‘Christmas decorations’ off your shopping list and give worn out ornaments a much-needed makeover.

renewing

Problem: “My ornaments look cheap and outdated.” Solution: Coat ornaments with light layers of matte or pearlescent spray paint to avoid leaving streaks or drips. Cover up any imperfections by gluing on glitter, beads or rhinestones. Try a mixture of colors and textures to create a unified look that will give your Christmas tree a whole new look. Problem: “The surface of my ornaments is scratched.” Solutions: Some scratches cannot be covered with paint. In these cases, use decorative ribbon to conceal scratches. Wrap ornaments from top to bottom or

8 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 54

sideways and top them with bows. Try different textured ribbons such as, satin, velvet and grosgrain to give them all a unique look. Problem: “My clear ornaments look too plain.” Solution: Clear ornaments are the perfect blank canvas. Try spray painting the inside of the ornament and gluing on holiday decals or tying a bow to the top. You can also coat ornaments with glue and dip them in glitter or tiny beads. Another crafty solution would be to create a snow globe effect by filling them with artificial snow and painting or stenciling designs all around the outside.

reusing

Problem: “I do not want to pay an arm and a leg for Christmas decorations.” Solutions: So then make your own! Use decorations from past years such as a vase and left over ornaments to create a beautiful holiday centerpiece for the dinner table. String ornaments on ribbon or fishing line to hang along your window lock for a festive look.

Problem: “I have too many ornaments that do not coordinate with each other.” Solutions: You cannot put every ornament you own on the tree and they may not match your holiday décor. However, think of all the different kinds of gift-wrap you can mix and match your ornaments with. Instead of gift tags, use any spare ornaments to decorate your Christmas presents and personalize them by writing the recipient’s name in glitter or paint. Problem: “I do not have the heart to toss my old ornaments.” Solutions: Very few of us can. Decorations can hold fond memories of joy and comfort. But who said you have to throw them away? Throw an ornament exchange party with friends instead! You can draw numbers or exchange them through Secret Santa. Another very appropriate solution, in light of the season, would be to donate gently used ornaments to a local thrift store or community center.

HOLIDAYS | CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

CHRISTMAS

AROUND THE WORLD

BY JESSICA PERALES

Christmas tends to be a very special and unique holiday for everyone. Even in the same country, most people tend to feel that the way they celebrate is different than the way their friends or neighbors do. Some families have kept up special traditions amongst each other that make the holidays more meaningful to them. Similarly, people in other countries have their own distinct and significant traditions.

SPAIN

Spanish families gather for Christmas Dinner on December 26 before ‘La Misa del Gallo’ or Midnight Mass. The menu varies from traditional turkey dinners to more unique seafood platters. After the midnight service, the streets are filled with dancers and onlookers celebrating ‘Noche Buena’ with lit torches and different instruments. Most homes are decorated with nativity scenes and people hand out turron, an almond treat. ‘Fiesta de Los tres Reyes Mages,’ celebrated January 6, is when children leave shoes out on windowsills to be filled with presents from the three kings.

INDIA

Christmas time is relatively small in India due to the small number of Christians. They

12 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 54

do, however, have a small Midnight Mass. Families walk hand-in-hand to the church and bring with them delicacies, such as curry. Poinsettia flowers and oil lamps are the decorations of choice for Christians in India. And rather than a traditional Christmas tree, they decorate banana or mango trees. They also place small clay lamps on the roofs of their homes to symbolize that Jesus is the light of the world. Santa also visits the children of India on Christmas Night, but he does so on a cart pulled by a single horse.

GREECE

Young children carol in the streets on Christmas Eve and are often rewarded for good performances with money or treats. Midnight Mass is also very important to greeks. However, they often anticipate Christmas dinner, which ends their 40 day Advent fast. Their feast most often consists of lamb or pork and ‘christopsomo,’ which is a sweet, round loaf of bread. Although Christmas trees are becoming more popular amongst Greeks, they often have a bowl of water with a wire suspended across the rim that holds a wooden cross that is wrapped with a sprig of basil. Once a day, the cross is dipped in holy water and used to sprinkle water on the home.

AUSTRALIA

Christmas in Australia is joined by summer time heat! They do put up traditional Christmas trees, but focus more on Christmas light displays. In the big cities of Australia, they often gather at festivals, parades, and pageants where they watch a Carols by Candlelight service or firework display. Santa also takes on a whole new look! He trades out his reindeer for a pack of kangaroos and his sled for a surfboard. Christmas meals are often eaten around lunchtime and on a beach where they can have a picnic or barbeque some seafood.

AFRICA

Caroling takes place on Christmas Eve all day until it is time for the Christmas service in the evening time. Most people spend some time at home, before the service, deciding what to wear and what present they will present at the altar. The love offering, or gift offering, is the most important part of the service and every person that attends leaves a gift. Since Africa also celebrates Christmas during the summer season, they often have Christmas dinner outdoors in the open air. On Christmas morning, many are awoken by Christmas carolers and another service is held. Throughout the day they eat, play games, and watch fireworks.

RELATIONSHIPS | WINTER WEDDINGS

We also spoke with wedding coordinator Sadaf Khan of “Layla Love Events” in Missouri City, Texas, and she gave excellent insight on how to execute a lavish and unforgettable winter wedding.

For winter weddings, it’s about creating foliage.

“To create an ambiance for an event, you really want to pay attention to all of the details, and you want to occupy those details in a space that’s taken advantage of when your guests are sitting for a long period of time. For winter weddings, it’s about creating foliage.” “Some of the ideas that I have pulled and I’ve been working on for an event is of course throwing in a touch of nature!” Sadaf encourages adding pine cones or maybe even small pumpkins air brushed in silver for centerpieces, and having the wedding cake on a big, wooden log to give the venue a fabulous forest feel. “Serve your guests champagne, winter is the time where you want to take it a step higher and serve your guests the bubbly, it keeps them warm, it keeps them crisp, but it also adds that touch of glam to your event as well.”

WINTER WEDDINGS BY MARISSA MONCRIFFE

It’s that time again! Romance is definitely in the air and love is the hottest trend this winter season. Boots, scarves and wedding gowns?—Yes, you heard right! Having a romantic winter wedding is becoming all the rave. Velvety red poinsettias, delicious eggnog and lots of mistletoe can set spark for a walk down lover’s lane. The most popular weddings are during the spring and summer months, so practically everyone gets married around that time, but bakery’s, wedding planners and beauty parlors are often times at its busiest (and nobody likes being on a waiting

16 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 54

list). What are some ideas for a winter wedding you ask? How about frosty champagne glasses filled with a festive cocktail like apple cider and rum garnished with a peppermint cane? Or Desserts such as cheesecake bites, topped with whipped cream and sprinkled with cinnamon! Two lovebirds can honeymoon this winter in a cabin resort in Yellowstone with a sensuous fireplace, or a ski adventure in Aspen followed by a relaxing hot tub. Don’t let a cool limit your possibilities this season.

“A lot of people are gone for the holidays. When a bride and groom decide they want to do a wedding, they have to reserve a date in advance to make sure they have their guests.” Sadaf expressed that although Spring is ideal for outside weddings, you can still be creative. Your guests could have a cocktail hour surrounding a fire pit, or even roast marshmallows! Areas such as Upper Kirby, Post Oak and Sugarland are already decorated in lights, so you don’t have to do anything to create a visual for the exterior of your venue! Winter can be cold or dry, and can flush out the vibrancy of an event, so it’s ok to add color; Bold Gold, Cool blues, snow flakes and crystals can create dazzle and glam! STAFF THOUGHTS:

What’s your favorite show at the moment? This month’s staff talks about TV shows they can’t get enough of and gives us a little insight about their life outside of work.

TV: “I can't really pick one show to be my favorite; I have so many to choose from! I'll start by saying that I'm completely obsessed with The Vampire Diaries; Mainly because of the hotties that come out in the show! I mean who could really resist, a sexy Vamp (nobody). My next obsession would have to be Grey's Anatomy, in which the drama and cute Doctors never end! The show is filled with such great moments in every episode that even though they're in there 10th season, it’s so hard to just stop watching it.” Life outside of work: “I love going home and opening up a great Nicholas Spark novel while indulging in a sparkling moscato wine. I also enjoy going for runs every night as a stress reliever from everyday work.” — Gladys Villarreal, Public Relations

TV: “I’m a huge fan of horror, blood and guts so as of right now I’m obsessed with American Horror Story Season 3, I think it’s the best season so far, the anticipation kills me every week.” Life outside of work: “Going out and having drinks with my friends is the best stress reliever from a heavy week. I love company but enjoy being by myself so if I’m not going out, I like just staying home and watching movies.” — JC Dominguez, Social Media Manager

TV: “This season of the Walking Dead is making me clutch my pearls! It’s definitely an intense series, both the comics and the show.” Life outside of work: “It’s all about my cat, Nike. We’re both fans of lounging around and watching Netflix all day. I also like to catch up on some reading.” — Jessica Alanis, Art Director

TV: “Yeah Science, B*tch! I can’t even explain how much I will miss Breaking Bad, but all great shows must come to an end eventually. One of the best stories I’ve seen in television and I’m going to miss the great Heisenberg. Now back to a lot of Big Bang Theory and Netflix.” Life outside of work: “It usually consists of cooking, netflix, going to the movies, taking the occasional mini road trip and xbox live when I get the chance.” — Stephen Araiza, Creative Director

20 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 54

TV: “I’m a huge fan of HGTV. I Love to watch all home improvement shows, but my favorite would have to be Property Brothers. I enjoy seeing the process of the makeover and the before and after transformation of the spaces.” Life outside of work: “Spending quality time with my husband and extending a helping hand by giving a word of inspiration to the people that surround us. Serving God, having fun trips and spending time with friends and family is what make most of my days an amazing one.” — Lyris Garcia, Administrative Assistant

Ringing

in the

NEW YEAR BY MICHELLE MELGAR

22 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 54

New Year’s has been celebrated throughout thousands of years and has evolved into the celebration we know it as today. Earliest records of New Year’s celebrations date far back as Ancient Babylonian times when it occurred during the vernal equinox (the day of the year when the amount of sunlight and darkness are equal). In Egypt, New Year’s was marked by the flooding of the Nile and rising of the Sirius star. Meanwhile, in China, New Year’s occurs sometime between the 20th of January and the 20th of February in accordance with the 2nd new moon after the winter solstice. However, the New Year’s we generally celebrate today has its origins in Ancient Rome.

When Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar, he established the 1st of January as the official start of the New Year. He chose this specific date as a tribute to the month’s namesake, Janus. In Roman mythology, Janus was the god of doorways and was depicted as having two faces, one looking back at the past and the other looking forward to the future. This made the decision all the more appropriate as January 1st would be the “doorway” into a new year.

Traditions

Lose Weight/Get Fit

There are a plethora of traditions that are done when hailing in the New Year. Many are cultural, some are regional, and others are traditions that have been passed down within families for generations.

OK, so you want to shave off some of that holiday weight or want to become healthier by getting fit. Good for you. However, if you’re going to make an unrealistic goal, then don’t even bother. The reason why this resolution is so infamous is because most people set unrealistic goals for themselves. For example, if you work full-time and have a family to support, then don’t expect to lose 300lbs in 12 months (unless you do one of those extreme-rapidweight-loss diets but those aren’t exactly good for you).

In the early days, some New Year’s traditions included religious sacrifices and drunken orgies. Fortunately, as the celebration evolved, so did many of the traditions. Here are some common New Year’s traditions we practice today (many, as you will see, are food related). • Wearing red for love • Eating long noodles for long life • Eating round fruits for money • Eating 12 grapes for luck • “Hoppin’ John” • Watching the Rose Bowl • Watching the ball drop in Times Square

If you truly want to lose the weight and keep it off, then make your goals realistic and don’t feel discouraged when you don’t see results right away. Take into consideration (and be honest with yourself) at how much free time you can spend on exercising, how much of a change in your diet and lifestyle are you willing to make, and (obviously) how serious you are in completing your resolution.

new year’s kiss

Quit Smoking/Drinking Less

The meaning behind kissing someone at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve has changed overtime. According to English and German folklore, you would celebrate by kissing the first person you encountered during the New Year; the nature of your encounter with this person would also set the tone for the rest of your year.

Smoking and drinking alcohol, the vices that have hooked men and women for ages despite their known negative effects, are two other resolutions many have trouble with. Why lots of people have trouble with these resolutions is

never forget why or for whom you’re doing this resolution for.

In Europe, masked balls were traditionally held where the masks worn represented evil spirits of the previous year. Then, when the New Year came, the masks were removed and were followed by a kiss. This custom was viewed as an act of purification. Another New Year’s kiss superstition is that, if a person who was single did not kiss someone else at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, then that person would spend another year of being single. So, if you would rather not spend another year as “forever alone”, then pucker up. Wink, wink.

resolutions With a new year comes the ever famous New Year’s resolution. Numerous people start up resolutions as they view the New Year as a way to start up fresh. However, as many of you already know, most people don’t follow through with these resolutions. They give every excuse in the book as to why they can’t complete their resolution they were so determined to accomplish at the beginning of the year. But is it because of all these excuses or is it something else? Here are some common New Year’s resolutions and tips on how to make them happen.

the idea of quitting cold turkey. Quitting anything suddenly makes succeeding hard to do and it also poses a greater chance for relapse. Let the process of it all be gradual. In regards to smoking, if needed, then use patches, gum, or pills to help with the process (with your doctor’s consent, of course). Another helpful way to overcome such addictions is providing healthy incentives for yourself like an hour-long bubble bath or extra time spent in the solitude of your man-cave. Finally, if you wish to tackle this resolution, If it’s to live a healthier lifestyle, then let that be your drive. If it’s to live long enough to see your children or even grandchildren grow up, then never forget that. And, like with the weight loss/fitness resolution, take into consideration how serious you are in going through with it.

Save Money If you find yourself constantly living off paycheck to paycheck then maybe it’s time to examine your life and prioritize. If you have bills to pay then don’t spend your money on things like jewelry or electronics. Learn to cut back because, seriously, do you really need the newest TV model or that 20th Gucci handbag? Saving money, like the other resolutions previously stated, requires a lifestyle change.

WHAT ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS

SAYING ABOUT YOU?

ustomer Service is key to a lasting and reputable establishment, but commonly lots of employees have become complacent with their occupation, consequently showing little to no appreciation for their loyal or new customers. We understand that when a restaurant or store is busy, it’s pretty hard to smile and greet customers the way its respective owners envisioned, but some instances do not deserve the benefit of the doubt! Being rude or harsh toward customers, and ignoring the very individuals that pay to keep your company afloat will result in a bitter taste in their mouth! But let’s hear what everyday consumers have to say about their favorite stores, and who has the best service in their opinion!

The best customer service that I’ve experienced is Carl’s Jr. because they come up to you and they check on if you want anything else, and how the food is. It makes me feel like they actually care.” - Zane, Houston, Tx

40 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 54

The best customer service I have had in Houston is at Urban Outfitters, they always ask if you need help and if you need anything to let them know.” - Oliver, Houston, TX

My favorite store would be Coach, their service is awesome, they are really helpful and really friendly. Im very satisfied with their service.” - Ruby, Houston, TX

I like to shop at Arden B and BeBe because they have really good customer service and the quality of their clothing is really good and it’s not really expensive. - Cinthia, Houston, TX

The best customer service I have had is from Chick-fil-A. Especially for a fast food restaurant, they always train their employees to somehow make the customers feel appreciated.” - Carl, Houston, TX

Macy’s, Nordstroms, Express, Guess, Foreign Exchange and BeBe has the best customer service because they greet you at the entrance, they’re nice to you and they’re welcoming.” - Michelle, Houston, TX

The best customer service I experienced so far is from the Cheesecake Factory, The waiters are always upbeat and they don’t neglect you, like most busy restaurants do.” - Ivy, Houston, TX

101 HOME BUYERS

BY MARISSA MONCRIFFE

A

fter stressing over the cost of rent for an apartment lease, tons of people have reluctantly moved back home with their parents to revive themselves of their monetary hardships, and to reinvent their financial budget! Some even take into consideration buying a home instead! We took advice from some of Houston’s best realtors and leasing agents for house hunters in the market to buy. We learned about what to look for when getting a new home and even office leases for new business owners.

The very first tip I would give for those wanting to buy is to seek out a Buyer’s Representative. Regardless if they buy a foreclosure, if they buy a new home or even if they’re looking for a commercial property, you need someone that is going to represent you.”

- C.W Gibbs, Real Estate Broker, Sunago Real Estate Development, Missouri City, TX

Location! Location! Location! Identify the neighborhood and the community, whether it’s the restaurants, jogging trail or community park. Have a list of top builders in every neighborhood and identify what best suits your lifestyle.” - Thai of Remax 360, Houston,TX

Buyers should look for homes near schools and communities with a low crime rate. During the summer is when the interest rate on a home is the lowest.” Says Abraham. Abraham and co-realtors has an array of financial, commercial and international brokers that can specifically match your leasing or home owning needs.” - Abraham and Co-Realtors, Real Estate Broker, Missouri City,TX

Location is the #1 rule! And it’s pretty simple, if you want a house, go find it and make sure its within your budget, but a realtor will help you write a contract, negotiate the terms and tell you what to look for, or what not to look for.” - Jerome, Real Estate Broker for LHS Realty, Missouri City,TX

44 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 54

Getting an office lease is not as emotional as a residence, but the main thing is location, and to get a realtor that takes care of your fiduciary needs.” - Diane Moser, Diane Moser Properties, Houston,TX

For an office lease, make sure that for new businesses you negotiate a graduated lease. And make sure that you are familiar with the price per square footage.” - Erwin Nicholas, Mr.Real Estate, Houston,TX

Check out which city, state, or federal grants are available to them. Some are based on income and profession. Some are based on location. Also, people who have disabilities may qualify for higher amounts of grants.” - Frances Campbell, Broker for Noteworthy homes, Missouri City,TX

HEALTH | PREGNANCY & DELIVERY

THE BEST choice for us Courtesy of: Dr. Jose Nieves, MD 800 W Jefferson St. Brownsville, TX 78520 (956) 550-8733

Having a baby can be one of the most joyous events in life, and it will change a couple’s life forever. Especially for first time parents, questions and anxiety over these changes are common. Most questions are discussed with the health care provider, some with friends and family with experience; nevertheless many people hesitate to discuss matters of sexuality with family/friends or even at the doctor’s office. Cesarean sections make up 30% of all births in the USA, and despite the efforts of professional medical societies these numbers are increasing. A growing number of obstetricians are willing to provide cesarean delivery on demand; some couples request elective cesarean deliveries for various reasons, usually scheduling issues or because they are unwilling or afraid of vaginal childbirth. Few cite reasons related to sexuality. Of those that do, “tightness” of the vagina post-partum is the most common reason to request cesarean delivery. Does each mode of delivery have different sexual side effects?

VAGINAL BIRTH

Vaginal birth is in general safer for both mother and baby. Sexual function after vaginal birth is a very complex issue and depends on many factors, including wexhaustion; sleep deprivation, hormonal changes (decreased desire, vaginal dryness) and adjustment issues. Of the factors related to the mode of birth it seems that the most important is whether an episiotomy (an incision made to enlarge the vaginal opening) is performed or not. Mothers that receive an episiotomy show delayed return to sexual activity and report painful sex more often than those who did not. Instrumental delivery (vacuum cup, forceps) had a similar effect. These effects

50 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 54

may last for months after childbirth. On the other hand, mothers who delivered vaginally and did not receive an episiotomy reported less pain during sex than C-section moms after 3 months. Roughly 30% of vaginal deliveries occur with episiotomy, and routine episiotomies (which were commonplace in the past) are unusual.

CESAREAN SECTION

Cesarean section caries higher health risks for both mother and baby, but sometimes can be necessary to preserve the life and health of both. Mothers who deliver by cesarean have stronger pelvic muscles than those who deliver vaginally up to two years after delivery. They also have lower rates of pelvic relaxation (“dropped uterus”) and of stress incontinence (“dropped bladder”), but does this translate to better sexual function? Tender cesarean scars, adhesions and numb patches in the abdomen are common after cesarean birth and can negatively affect sex in a way that has little to do with vaginal “tightness”. Additionally it is becoming harder to find obstetricians willing to deliver patients vaginally after cesarean. Since each subsequent cesarean carries more risks than the last, the more children you want, the more risk you will have. So, what’s the best choice? It is a very personal decision – healthwise and in terms of sexual function the best choice is to deliver vaginally without an episiotomy and without instrumentation, but in practical terms couples have limited control over this. Circumstances may require episiotomy, instrumental delivery or cesarean to preserve the life and health of mother and

baby; concerns about future sexual health are not the main priority in an emergency. What can you do to try to avoid episiotomy? Perineal massage once or twice a week during the last month of pregnancy can reduce the risk of perineal rips or cuts for first time mothers. Spontaneous pushing (where mothers bear down only when feeling the urge) takes longer than directed pushing but can also decrease the likelihood of episiotomy. In any case it is extremely important to discuss these matters with your obstetrician early in your pregnancy. Ask about routine episiotomy – does he do them? What aspects of the delivery are flexible and in which does he feel it’s his call? If you want to request a cesarean, ask about cesarean for non-medical reasons. Some OBs will not agree to a cesarean if it is not done for a medical reason, while others believe that as long as the patient is aware of the additional risk it is a valid option. The time to find out about this is not at the end of the pregnancy. Ask early and you will have time to find an OB that has similar attitudes to yours. After your delivery, Kegel exercises will benefit you whether you had a cesarean or vaginal birth. They will cut your risk of losing gas or urine during sex and may help intensify orgasm. To combat vaginal dryness, feel free to use generous amounts of lubricants. Most importantly, don’t rush into sex after childbirth. Everyone is different, and there is no “right” time to do it. Trust your instincts, and remember that your body may feel different for quite some time.
