Claremore

HISTORY

The principal chief of the Arkansas Band of Osage, Claremore, was formally known as Gra-mo’n (Arrow Going Home) and is believed to have been the son of Gra moie (Moving Hawk) or Gra-to-moh-se (Iron Hawk), a hereditary Osage chief. French and Spanish officials in Louisiana knew Gra moie by several names, including Glamore, Clarmont, and Clermont; Americans called his son “Claremore.” Gra moie died circa 1795.

Chief Claremore was young when his right to succeed his father was usurped. He subsequently moved from the Osage villages in Missouri to the Three Forks vicinity of present Oklahoma. There many Osage had relocated under Cashesegra (Makes Tracks Far Away). Because they lived near the Arkansas River, these Osage were designated the Arkansas Band. Claremore was more influential than Cashesegra and became their leader.

Claremore’s village was located along the Verdigris River northwest of present Claremore in Rogers County. Western Cherokees and their allies destroyed the settlement during the so-called Battle of Claremore Mound in autumn 1817. Claremore, a noted warrior, and his braves were absent when the attack occurred. The settlement reportedly consisted of three hundred lodges and three thousand inhabitants circa 1820. Because of his village, Claremore was also called To-Wo’n Ga-Xe (Town Maker).

Chief Claremore had good relations with whites. He welcomed the Union Mission in

SERVICES CLAREMORE POLICE DEPARTMENT The Claremore, Oklahoma Police Department promotes safety, security, and an improved quality of life in and for the City of Claremore through their personal and organizational commitment to excellence and accountability.

The department has 39 sworn officers and eight civilian employees: a business manager, an evidence officer, IT, records division staff members, and animal control employees.

Claremore Public Schools have two School Resource Officers assigned to their campuses.

Claremore was the sixth municipal police agency in the state to achieve the status of accreditation by OACP. The rigid professional standards required for this accomplishment make hard work and serious commitment by every member of the department absolutely necessary.

Many crime prevention programs are offered by the Claremore Police Department, including: drug abuse; check schemes; cons and frauds; domestic abuse; forgery and counterfeiting; fingerprinting; house watch; neighborhood watch; common elderly scams; senior citizens safety; visits and tours; rape aggression defense systems; and women’s safety. The Citizens Police Academy is another crime prevention program that educates the public on what being a police officer entails and how the department works.

CLAREMORE FIRE DEPARTMENT The Claremore Fire Department has proudly served the community since 1907, when only a horse-drawn pumper and a few dedicated volunteers were the entirety of the service. Today, citizens of Claremore are served by a full-time professional department, state-of-the-art equipment, and expertise to handle any emergency.

The Mission Statement of Claremore’s Fire Department, “To promote safety, security, and an improved quality of life in and for the City of Claremore through our personal and organizational commitment to excellence and accountability,” is taken seriously, as is evidenced in its quality of service. The Claremore Fire Department has an average 4 minute, 25 second response time in the city limits and can boast an ISO rating of 2, one of the best in Eastern Oklahoma.

Firefighters operate from three stations and have use of state-of-the-art equipment including the Region 2 CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive) Unit, command vehicle, wild land/brush units, a 2,000 gallon water tanker, an aerial apparatus, and numerous fire engines.

The Department has 47 full-time employees, with 42 assigned to three shifts of 14, providing continuous emergency service. Claremore’s firefighters are certified as Registered EMTs, State First Responders, National Registered Intermediates, and/or Paramedics.

Claremore has one of only six Homeland Security Regional Response Units in the state.

RECREATION BLUE WHALE PARK

Located at 2680 North Highway 66 in Catoosa, OK

The Blue Whale of Catoosa is a waterfront structure that has become one of the most recognizable attractions on old Route 66. The whale was constructed as a gift for Zelda, the wife of Hugh Davis, as she collected whale figurines. As the feature became more and more popular, Davis brought in picnic tables and sand and hired lifeguards. This state-of-the-art 80,000 square foot, $7.1 million facility is operated by the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Claremore. The center offers an aerobics room, basketball and volleyball courts, indoor swimming pool, racquetball courts, tennis courts, a walking and jogging track, a weight room, swimming lessons, and childcare.

Services and amenities each cost an individual fee, and participants can purchase a membership or pay a daily entrance fee. The facility opened in 1999, a result of funds generated by a temporary sales tax increase of 1 cent.

During the summer, the Claremore Community Band plays at the gazebo, and public gatherings and weddings take place there. The park features picnic tables, park benches, shade trees, and restrooms. A new space-themed playground was unveiled in April 2022.

The Claremore Regional Airport is located only eight miles from the central business district of Claremore.

The 19,052-square-foot museum dedicated to “Oklahoma’s favorite son,” Will Rogers, sits on a rolling, green hill surrounded by sunken gardens in a beautiful Mediterranean Revival-style building with limestone walls and spit slate floors. Exhibits feature artifacts and memorabilia of the life of Will Rogers, a children’s museum, and a theater that shows documentaries and speeches about his life, as well as movies in which he starred. Despite Oklahoma being over 500 miles to the nearest beach, Claremore is only 12 miles from a port city. The Port of Catoosa, a multi-modal shipping complex and 2,000-acre industrial park, is one of the largest, most inland river-ports in the United States. The Port brings $300 million to Oklahoma each year.

3,000 workers are employed by 70 companies in the industrial park of the Tulsa Port of Catoosa, which is managed and operated by the City of Tulsa - Rogers County Port Authority. Development services are provided through Tulsa’s Port of Catoosa Facilities Authority.

These 2 public entities focus on the Port’s mission to:

Over 82 million tons of freight have passed through the Port of Catoosa since its opening in 1971. On average over 1,000 barges pass through the Port each year, with the 50,000th barge to enter the Port being celebrated in 2017.

“Promote the long-term viability of the waterway and its ability to provide water transport; grow the employment and economic base of Northeast Oklahoma; optimize the region’s barge and related rail and truck bulk freight patterns; and operate in a financially independent manner.”

Shipping loads are handled through the Port’s waterway access to the Arkansas River via the Verdigris River and is designated a foreign trade zone. Conveniently 8 miles from the Tulsa International Airport and served by BNSF Railroad and the South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad, the Port of Catoosa provides rail switching services with 3 switch engines. It has 5 public terminals handling inbound and outbound freight between barges, trucks, and railroad cars.

In 2020, the Tulsa Port of Catoosa was rebranded “Tulsa Ports.” That same year, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration granted $1.1 million to the Tulsa Ports for railroad crossing repairs, freight rail infrastructure, and interchange improvements.
