Paula Siu Ka Ying I am an undergraduate from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Being a student in product and industrial design programme, there are many opportuninties to explorie different aspects of design field. I learnt various of skills, from drawing and computer skills to design thinking and problem solving skills. These experiences equip me to become an all-round designer.

06 / ECHO DE LA MER
This area allows user to express their depressions and frustrations by various ways.
La mer
Users can speak, shout, sing, meditate or take a rest in their own spaces. The bottles can capture sound waves, and has a response from the echo of the sea, giving users a feedback but not in a direct and disturbing way.
They can also write down or draw anything on the surfaces of the glass bottles by fingers. It allows them to express their depressions and frustrations.
When the users step onto the ground, the ripples will show, giving them a feeling: they are roaming on the water surface. In the dark, it still shines bright, just like being in a spacious ocean, when you look up, a silver moon shines high up in the sky, and there is hope underneath. Same as those stressful people, all they need is a tiny little simple motion or incidents that will cheer you up, for example, a warm embrace, like what la mer gives.

This is not an endless waiting. We enlighten them with hope.

Echo de la mer (echo of the sea) is an interactive outdoor installation to release stress. The idea is came from the bottle message. People who are suffering under pressure, we portray that it is an endless waiting of hop, just like throwing out a bottle message into the sea. Sometimes stress cannot be verbally expressed, which others might not fully understand what they are facing. The design is divided into two parts, La mer & Bluddur. It interacts between each other in a far distance.

Bludder receiving centre: collects messages from la mer
Bluddur
Sea surface messages spread out widely on bubbles by colour changes, opacity, silhouette
09
It may only be a temporary relief if you just express the stress physically in La mer. If there is someone, or even something, that touches one’s heart by showing sympathetic. It gives a greater encouragement to the person spiritually.
Those bubbles have a shining effect which acts like an SOS signal to the viewer, curiosity is what leads the people to those bubbles, wanting to know what’s happening inside. When people walk by blubbur, they are seeing a silhouette projection from la mer. People might have an instinct to touch the bubbles. At this moment, they have just done something for the people who are suffering from stress at la mer side who need a hand from them. How to show la mer’s problem is solved? When the blubbur turns into cool colors, there are problems needed to be solved. If the problem is solved, blubbur turns into warm, soft color. Sometimes, problems cannot be solved completely, there is a transition colour, purple, to represent the progress. Same as the shadow part, when the people touch the shadow, it will fade away, just like things will eventually turn better if there is someone willing to stay by your side and defeat the darkness in life together.
This project won the second winner up award from the Disney ImagiNations Hong Kong 2016 Design Competition. The project displaying day in the Hong Kong Disneyland.
10 / SERENE
Both human and plant require respiration to sustain life. We can easily feel our pules and control our breathe. But, how about the plant? Can we observe and feel their signs of life?
Indoor Interactive Pot
All living things get the energy they need to live from a chemical reaction called respiration. Respiratory system is a biological system consisting of specific organs and structures used for the process of respiration in an organism. The respiratory system is involved in the intake and exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between an organism and the environment. Respiratory of human and plant

I ntroverted Getting the idea of Chinese culture, introverted. Regular look is given to Roundel when people see the outer form.
Round Shou pattern Inside the cup, a round shou pattern is designed to project the oriental taste.
Round shou pattern means longevity in Chinese word with the center 壽 . I designed the pattern with other propitious signs, like the clouds and bats.

Scenario Roundle is placed in the Chinese restaurant and in the living room.
3D Printed Model The round shou pattern is projected on the inner wall.

After the research of the existing machine, it is found that unclear instruction - the fonts and pictures are too small confusion of button - there are some buttons that would not be used limited users serviced - the height of the machine is not suitable for child andwheelchair users limited amount of money can be added - users can only insert fifty and one hundred dollar notes to get their Octopus Card topped up inaesthetic - it is in box shape and the colour and form create a sense of pressure to the users

The Art of Perfect Showering... Enjoyable shower, with a good grip handle
27
This project is to design a new product for the chosen brand. I picked a US Based kitchenwares manufacturer - OXO. I was impressed by its user
friendly design utensils. Our Shower Head feature polished silver body and rounded handles that fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. The soft , comfortable plastic handle won't slip
in wet hands. The upper U-shaped is also made with the same material, allowing fingers to grip on. This simple, clean design makes an elegant look in the modern bathroom.

The chosen colour is selected based on the products of OXO. SILVER and BLACK are the most commonly found colours in OXO. The black part is the non slip plastic with the silver metal part.
The photo is taken with the real model and applied into the poster. Video is also availble with the QR code below. It shows the function and interaction between the user and the shower head. The model is made by FDM method of 3D printing in order to gain the hollow effect. PLASTIC and HOLLOW: It allows the water to pass through to show the function of the shower head.

30 / LIRIO
Lirio is a balance bike designed for 10 - 15 years old children who would like to learn cycling. We aim to produce a balance bike for kids to have fun, in order for them to get rid of the electronic game addition. This bike is inspired by the structure of giant lily. This bike is a cooperative project, produced and design by Lirio team.
31
RESEARCH & IDEA EXPLORATION
MODEL OF GIANT LILY At first, we did the research of the giant lily. It is formed by centrical support system, having thickened stem& web-like veins, grow in the shallow water, like flowing on the river.
MINI MOCK UP We used cardboard, wires and spaghetti to make two mock-ups of the balance bike. At first, we wanted the two sides of the main body is in different pattern, as the mock up shows. We thought it would gives a much interesting visual effect as if you can see through the structure. However, it would be hard for the model making.
It tests the proportion of the design and also give a reference for the final model.
32 / LIRIO
FINAL SKETCHES After several adjustments in our team, we came out with the design. We applied the structure and pattern of giant lily in the handle and main body of the bike. User is holding a down giant lily handle. Besides, the main body applies the grid structure of giant lily. We want to give a natural feeling to the viewers so we decided to use wood for the construction of this balance bike.

Most of the photos are taken in Hong Kong, 2015. These photographs show the architectures and street view of Hong Kong. Those skyscrapers show the special urban atmosphere of Kong Kong, crowded and stressful. I emphasis on the beauty of lines and structures of the constructions. Extraordinary perspectives are shot and willing others to look at them at a different angle and appericate them.
