Painting is an encounter with ideas and emotions, an alchemy of
colour and mark making. Translating thought and creating a visual language brings many challenges to the artist. “Pathway to painting” presents a safe space, to learn through experimentation, where fear of “not succeeding” is removed. It allows us to reconnect with our inner child who loved exploring and
investigating the universe. Immersing ourselves in a world of colour we have learnt to make an image “sing”, explored the great variety of mediums and substrates, and studied the masters of paint. Conjuring other realities on a two dimensional surface, paints are carefully mixed, each increment and colour change considered. Brush marks combine to expand the artists vocabulary, shapes, lines, tone and texture bring volume, space, movement and light to the surface. This book is a “voyage of discovery” and holds within its pages years of knowledge and a determination to continue along the pathway to
painting.

I am in an early experimental period learning to wrap together my developing ideas. This is a snapshot image taken during gestural action sessions based on my emotional palette. Using stoicism as my starting point and influenced by De Kooning where
marks call their own making in the spontaneous creative moment, I interspersed with longer and quieter critical periods. I enjoyed the freedom to embrace with the physicality of the mediums: oil paint and soft charcoal a la prima.
I found a friction from jumping from one logic to another to try to co-mingle form, colour and gesture.

Zooming for me was a challenge at first with intermittent connections, not being able to hear or clearly see images but over time it has become a daily routine. Too my surprise I have achieved far more than I expected and can’t thank Paul enough for his cheerful and inspiring way of presenting his classes via zoom.
