Making it’s entrance into Melbourne’s vibrant and exciting cultural and arts scene, Pause Fest delivered on it’s promise to bring exciting, innovative, creative and contemporary digital content from the creative industries. The inaugural festival, held in November from the 7th to the 13th, featured an impressive assortment of events and the creative work of over 85 artists and agencies from around the world. Having formed partnerships with some of the world’s best-known creative studios and cultural institutions such as Vimeo, IdN Magazine, Sound Cloud and Radium Audio the festival delivered some of the freshest content and provided new perspectives and outlets for the featured artists as well as for audiences. With the help of some of the brightest minds from one of Australia’s premier digital studios, Visual Jazz, Pause Fest also delivered a highly-praised website and smartphone application. The festival’s program brought to Melbourne the best in international and local digital art and featured screenings at ACMI, Fed Square, Rancho Notorious and Loop as well as 10 interactive installations at Melbourne Central GPT and projections around the CBD with the Projector Bike crew. Studio Equator’s outstanding multitouch installation BSHO, GXM’s Transparent TV and Chris Staring’s Instrument Mapping project turned heads at Melbourne Central. The stand-out screening of the festival were the 15 animations specially crafted for the festival by the likes of Breeder, whose opening credits for the festival were breath-taking in combination with Radium Audio’s amazing sound design and the likes of Sander Van Dijk, Ronaldo
Tozzi, Dima Grubin, Bestia, Hi Organic, Murat Pak, Ian Clemmer, Mirari & Co, Leviathan, Physalia, Lumbre, Stupid Studio, Futuredelxue, DMCI, Big Boom and Dir Kobayashi. The festival also brought other gems to Melbourne’s viewing public such as a specially curated collection of interviews with some of the world’s best creative minds by Gestalten TV; Efozy’s (MYS) award-winning audio visual project Satu Hari; Motiongrapher’s Editor-At-Large Matt Lambert’s specially curated selection of their top-picks from the industry as well as a collection from his project Bare Bones; the stand-out Australian premiere of Graham Elliot’s feature film New York in Motion and David Dworsky and Victor Köhler’s feature PressPausePlay. Pause Fest also delivered on it’s promise to nurture young creative minds by featuring some amazing work from the students at Swinburne, RMIT and Deakin universities. In the true spirit of interactivity the festival was laced with a plethora of networking opportunities in relaxed settings such as Rooftop Bar and Berlin Bar, as well as the unforgettable afterparties held at Eurotrash and Loop featuring DJ’s from HAHA Industries, Blue MD, Max Vegas and a collaboration with the Pitch Bitch crew.

Pause Fest Q+A // George Hedon Author: Elisa Scarton Interviewed by Bonnie Abbot For: Desktop
YOU HAVE TO ADMIT IT. MELBOURNE IS SORELY IN NEED OF A DEDICATED DIGITAL FESTIVAL. FOR ALL OF OUR ALLEYWAYS AND PENCHANT FOR PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF ART AND DESIGN, MELBOURNE HAS BEEN YEARNING FOR A GREAT, FUTURISTIC, AND INSPIRING EXHIBITION OF LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL DIGITAL TALENTS. FROM NOVEMBER 7 - 13, OUR CITY IS GOING TO BE INVADED BY CREATIVE MINDS FOR THE FIRST EVER PAUSE FEST. DIGITAL DESIGN MEETS EDGY ANIMATION, THE FESTIVAL WILL BE STAGING VARIOUS FREE AND TICKETED EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE CBD. THERE’LL BE EVERYTHING FROM FREE SCREENINGS, TO DIGITAL REAL-LIFE ON-THESTREETS PROJECTS, INTERACTIVE AND MULTI-TOUCH INSTALLATIONS AND PROJECTIONS MAPPING. IT ALL SOUNDS PRETTY COMPLEX, WHICH IS WHY WE SAT DOWN WITH THE FOUNDER OF PAUSE FEST, GEORGE HEDON.
SO GEORGE, HOW DID YOU GO FROM GRAPHICS DESIGNER TO THE FOUNDER OF MELBOURNE’S FIRST DIGITAL FESTIVAL? To be honest, I never knew I would be making a festival in the first place. In my previous art history, I’d had a few really successful exhibitions that came at four to five-year intervals. For example, three years ago I had an exhibition at the Belgrade Design Week titled ‘The White House Project’ where I explored the psycho-geographical mapping of cities in a graphical context, but presented as ten prints on canvas. I was living in Europe at the time and spent years collecting vinyl and organising parties wherever I happened to be, and I think that, with the help of some of the bigger campaign projects I worked on while in Europe, led me to think about doing something more intense than an exhibition. Then when I got back to Melbourne, I wanted to create something special with art and digital scene and that’s pretty much how Pause Fest came to life.
IT’S PRETTY INSPIRATIONAL TO HEAR THAT YOU SET UP THIS FESTIVAL FROM THE GRASSROOTS WITHOUT A BUNCH OF MASSIVE SPONSORS, HOW DID YOU MAKE IT ALL HAPPEN? When we started looking for the sponsorships we didn’t really have a rich program to offer them, let alone the numbers they were asking for their ROI. Pause was forming as we were going along and many businesses wanted to see how it turned out before they promised anything. What we do have, though, is our great media partners that share our enthusiasm, passion and dedication to make it work, and their love for the Pause Fest idea worth all the money in the world.
WHY DOES MELBOURNE NEED PAUSE FEST? Maybe I should quote Andrew from Radium Audio, our program partners from London and the people behind the sounds of the Pause animations. Andrew said he believed the whole world was waiting for Pause Fest just because it’s so innovative. Personally, I think the Melbourne needs this because it offers something fresh that will also boost the local digital and animation industry, and provide a great image for the city. It’s not often that Australian festivals can compete with other festivals internationally, but I think Pause Fest will.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS AT THE HEART AND SOUL OF PAUSE FEST? The heart and soul of Pause Fest are its artists, agencies and contributors globally and nationally. They are so talented and so motivated and they absolute love Pause Fest. We get so much global love everyday, it’s hard to refuse it sometimes.
IT’S FANTASTIC TO HEAR THAT THE FESTIVAL IS NON-FOR-PROFIT AND MOST OF THE EVENTS WILL BE FREE, WHY HAVE YOU CHOSEN NOT TO CHARGE? Everyone loves freebies, right? But seriously, we wanted to make the best and most enjoyable bits of the festival open to everyone. Digital media is, at its very core, an accessible medium and most of us love consuming it just because it’s free. The events that are more specific to the creative industry such as screenings will be ticketed at a standard price, but rest is free and open to everyone.
TELL US ABOUT THE UPCOMING PAUSE FEST? WHAT’S IN STORE FOR DIGITAL LOVERS AND CREATIVES? There are plenty of smaller events, for up to 300 people, all around the city and a few big events open to the general public during the week of Pause Fest. They range from educational talks and animation screenings to digital real-life onthe-streets projects, interactive and multi-touch installations, projections mapping, presentations with Q&As, bar hopping and just a few surprises along the way too…
THE FESTIVAL SOUNDS LIKE A LOT OF WORK. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO PUT TOGETHER SUCH A UNIQUE EVENT? It takes a lot of dedication and passion. We all have our daily jobs and Pause is a side project that’s probably bigger than our daily jobs. That’s why we have strong connections with the internationals because after 6pm here, it’s daytime overseas.
ARE THERE ANY INSTALLATIONS OR CREATIONS YOU’RE PARTICULARLY LOOKING FORWARD TO? I’m personally looking forward to see all 11 international animation screenings from Breeder, Sander Van Dijk, Murat Pak, Ian Clemmer, Bestia, Jean-Paul Frenay, Hi Organic, Onur Senturk, Mirari&Co, Dima Grubin and Ronaldo Tozzi, and hear the spectacular Radium Audio sound design that will be mixed into it. It’s going to be a treat for anyone coming to see it at the ACMI on November 11!
I’m also excited to see how the SoundCloud project turns out. Anyone can be part of it, all they have to do is record sounds around the city – interviews, concerts, funny chats, secret recordings, anything – with the SoundCloud App. Then after the festival we’ll be mapping the most innovative, funny or original sounds to the Google map location where they were recorded. The project will offer a sneak peak into our digital real-life on the streets, which is pretty exciting!
PART OF THE FESTIVAL SEEMS TO BE DEDICATED TO NETWORKING, WHY? AND WHAT OPPORTUNITIES WILL PEOPLE HAVE TO NETWORK DURING THE FESTIVAL? The nature of our events is very casual and intimate so people can meet each other and talk to the exhibitors and the presenters easily. Our website allows users to leave comments and start communication with the artist or agency they liked. Some of our artists have already been approached by agencies via our website and been commissioned to do work for them. I’m really psyched about that because that’s what Pause is all about – nurturing and promoting creativity for everyone to enjoy.
