The City of Melbourne is proud to be part of the 2014 Pause Fest as it supports Melbourne’s reputation for innovation and creativity. With more than 20 events over four days and a mission to explore digital culture in all its manifestations, festival-goers are sure to find something that will inspire them. This year’s theme, connected, resonates strongly with council as we continue to develop new ways to gather and share information among our creative sectors. I encourage you to exchange, debate and celebrate the digital world on offer as part of the 2014 Pause Fest.

Dear Pause friends, Melbourne, this festival is officially yours. It’s been organised, curated and produced by the power of local and international industry creatives who’ve volunteered their precious time to make it happen. It’s really a miracle that I’m managing to organise this behemoth for the fourth year in a row and still work part-time at Helsinki Agency! In all honesty, Pause is the result of true community spirit and I want to congratulate everyone for helping us make it a reality. In 2014 the theme is ‘Connected’: bringing you a festival featuring six different creative industries that operate in the digital space. It’s part of Pause Fest’s DNA to explore Digital Culture and in doing so we decided to connect everyone from local creatives to developers to entrepreneurs to management to academia. You are all invited to join in, to help grow your local digital community, to start conversations, to meet visionaries and hear their stories - stories that will shape our lives. I believe a connected approach is vital for the progress and innovation of Australia’s creative economy. Every event, contribution and partnership this year was developed with pure love, passion, dedication and with a great belief that Pause Fest is for everyone. The struggle and joy involved in making it happen is all worthwhile, because it’s for you. I’m looking forward to connecting with you at the festival. George Hedon, Founder.

Refresh yourself Need a pit stop between Pause perusals? Time Out has put together its picks of where to eat and drink
02 Young and Jacksons If you’d rather take your talking gear to somewhere a little more simple (and a little closer to the festival hub) this stalwart pub just opposite Flinders Street train station is our
Bar Ampere
go-to. The craft beer selection is surprisingly good, and there are plenty of booths, and even a rooftop cider garden in which to swing jugs around while talking out the big issues. Cnr Swanston and Flinders St, Melbourne 3000. 03 9650 3884. www.youngandjacksons.com.au. 03 Misty Place This is one of Melbourne’s original laneway bars. It’s had its ups and downs over the past eight years, but right now, Misty’s star is on the rise. A new cocktail list features the likes of the Roman Monk – Cognac, Benedictine and barrel-aged bitters given a spice cabinet razz up with almondy, gingery falernum – and the beer list features the likes of the excellent 4 Pines Kolsch. Plus, design fans, thanks to Misty’s Hosier Lane address you can take the
Shebeen
opportunity to check out the brand new graffiti works that have just been completed in the alley. 3-5 Hosier Ln, Melbourne 3001. 03 9663 9202. 04 Shebeen Shebeen is the bar where it’s selfish not to drink. The profits from every wine or beer here (all sourced from developing nations) go back to a charity in that drink’s country of origin. So you could say no to a Tecate. But you’d be the cold hearted wretch depriving Root Capital, a charity that lends start-up funds to African and Latin American businesses, of much needed coin. It’s boho-chic with its ramshackle decor of corrugated iron and bright tiles and you’re just a short amble away from Federation Square. 36 Manchester Ln, Melbourne 3000. 03 9650 6931. www.shebeen.com.au.

01 Bar Ampere They love a niche offering at this kooky, sophisticated slip of a joint. Ramp up your night with an aperitif of Maidenii vermouth or how about some absinthe? They have Melbourne’s biggest collection of wormwood liquor, and they serve it properly with iced water added from a vintage fountain. We can’t guarantee you’ll hallucinate, but things are spacey enough here as it is. The concrete walls are mounted with creepy glove moulds holding mining lights, and the back wall is a luminous floor-to-ceiling mosaic of backlit bottles. It’s a bit like drinking on a sci-fi film set, and exactly the sort of place you want to go if you’ve got some big ideas post-fest you want to run through. 16 Russell Pl Melbourne 3000. 03 9663 7557. www.barampere.com.

02 Meatball and Wine Bar Flinders Lane is a buzzing strip after dark. And you’ll find a lot of that buzz centred right around this purveyor of meatballs and Italian wines. If your festival dance card is especially full, you’ll probably need the hefty sustenance provided by a trio of fragrant chicken, beef or vegetarian balls jazzed up with sauces like a punch-to-thesenses salsa verde, all nesting in a creamy bed of crushed potatoes. It’s simple, straightforward stuff for get-in-get-out eating that won’t take up all your pocket money. 135 Flinders Lane Melbourne 3000. 03 9654 7545. www.meatballandwinebar.com.au.

01 GAZI You can go as hard or as fast as you like at this luminous Greek bistro. The eight-course tasting menu of fancified Hellenic street-food – we’re talking sizzling saganaki with caramelised cumquats and meats from a flock of beasts, fresh off the spit – is a good time if you can rally some festival friends and you have a few hours to spare. Or, if you’re after a quick refuel between talks, run in, grab a seat at the bar and hit them up for an $8 Espressotini and a fat little souvlakia packing plenty of mustard and a handful of salty French fries. 2 Exhibition St, Melbourne 3000. 03 9207 7444. gazirestaurant.com.au.

03 Chin Chin This artsy mod-Thai canteen is consistently pumping. Every table is packed with rowdy groups throwing down DIY spring rolls and nuclear grade jungle curries and quenching the fire with boozy coconut ice slushies. Go for plenty of small things like explode-in-yourmouth flash fried son-in-law eggs with a dollop of chilli jam, and a cleansing plate of kingfish sashimi sluiced with lime juice, threads of chilli and kaffir lime leaf and cooling dabs of coconut cream. Go early or late to miss the queues. 125 Flinders Ln, Melbourne 3000. 03 8663 2000. www.chinchinrestaurant.com.au.
04 Shandong Mama You’ll have to wander a little further afield – it’s in a Bourke Street arcade – and the space is fairly plain, but if this isn’t the best little hole-in-the-wall dumpling den in Melbourne, we’ll eat the menu. What they lack in décor here, they make up for in friendliness and crazy freshness and flavour. Pan fried chicken dumplings are crisp, golden and juicy and they do steamed, gingery fish versions that are clean as a whistle. Get a side of spinach with a wasabi kick, and walk away feeling both dumplinged and svelte. Shop 7, 200 Bourke St, Melbourne 3000. 03 9650 3818.

“Here’s to the crazy ones — the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things. They push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
