INTRODUCTION PCC Exol SA was created by merge of PCC Exol SA and Surfactants Business Unit of PCC Rokita SA. The Company’s core scope of operation is the manufacture and sale of surfactants. The Company is headquartered in Brzeg Dolny, where is located manufacturing unit of anionic and nonionic surfactants. Moreover, in 2011, there was start-up of new production unit of nonionic surfactants (ethoxylation plant) in Płock. The flexibility of production allows to offer a wide range of anionic and nonionic surfactants according to the current needs of our Customers. As one of the leading manufacturers of chemical products, the Company is continuing to undertake investment activities with using modern technologies and based on the principle of sustainable development. Our strategic investor is the German Company PCC SE, which operates internationally in three divisions: Chemicals, Energy and Logistics. Today, more than 70 subsidiaries and associated Companies working within the PCC Group employ about 2500 staff in 16 countries. Group strategy is focused on growth and profitability in the core activities as well as on diversification into new segments. PCC GROUP (Poland)

ANTI-FOAM SURFACTANTS CHEMICAL NATURE The ROKAmers and ROKAnols are low-foaming non-ionic surfactants. ROKAmers are block copolymers of ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO). ROKAnols are polyoxyalkylene fatty alcohols. ROKAmers are block copolymers of ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO) and can be represented by the following formula:

HO(CH2CH2O)X[CH(CH3)CH2O]Y(CH2CH2O)ZH where: X+Z– average number of ethylene oxide units, Y – average number of propylene oxide units. ROKAnols are ethylene and propylene oxide adducts to various types of alcohols and can be represented by the following structures:

RO(CH2CH2O)X[CH(CH3)CH2O]YH or RO[CH(CH3)CH2O]Y(CH2CH2O)XH where: R – fatty alcohol chain, X – average number of ethylene oxide units, Y – average number of propylene oxide units.

APPLICATION Antifoam surfactants are very useful for low-foam and no-foam applications. They are especially suitable as rinse aids, hard surface cleaners, metal cleaners and machine dishwashing. Antifoam surfactants are also used in pulp & paper, food processing, textile processing, agriculture, paint & coating and other applications.

• FOOD PROCESSING

• METAL CLEANING

• TEXTILE INDUSTRY • LAUNDRY DETERGENTS

BASIC PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

Antifoaming agents have several properties responsible for their efficient operation, such as: • low viscosity, • effectively eliminating foam and preventing of foam formation, • high proliferation in the foamed surface, • lack of silicone components, • long shelf life.

Basic information concerning ROKAmers and ROKAnols physical and chemical properties are summarized in Table 1.

ANTI-FOAMING CAPABILITY

Anti-foaming properties were tested using the internal test method that allows to determine the ability to extinguish the foam produced by the standard solution. The method consists in measuring the foam volume generated by the foaming agent solution, which degrades over time, by injection of a solution to the surface of the test compound antifoam. Anti-foaming properties of PCC Exol products compared to reference products are shown in Graph 1 and Graph 2. 1000 900

Time [min]

Anti-foam surfactants produced by PCC Exol exhibit very good defoaming properties. They effectively eliminate foam and the result is comparable or even better than for reference products. Both ROKAmers and ROKAnols extinguish the foam mostly in the first minute after dosing on the foaming medium.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Low foaming surfactants produced by PCC Exol find use in food industry. The products enable foam control at all stages of production process. This kind of surfactants can act according to two mechanisms: • as defoamers: because of the affinity to the air-liquid surface they can penetrate foam lamellas and destabilize them; this causes bursting of the air bubbles and destroying the foam, • as antifoams: they spread on the liquid surface to form film which prevents foam from forming. The more hydrophobic defoamer the better propagation and defoaming effect.

Low-foaming agents are used: • as a component of defoaming agents in potato processing, • in the sugar industry, • in fruits and vegetables processing.

ROKAmer 2000 and ROKAmer 2600 comply with FDA regulations (21 CFR § 173.430 Defoaming agents).
