TEXTILE INDUSTRY The mechanical and chemical treatments of fibre, used in textile industry, are made of various intermediate steps in which surface active substances play an important role. Their function deals mainly with proper wetting process of fibre and fabric what influences the improvement in dye sorption and adhesive properties of fibre. Additionally, surfactants are responsible for emulsification and dispersing processes. They improve the resistance to abrasion, removing natural impurities and these generated during processing fibre. At the same time they improve the process of washing fastness of the dye in fibre.

PCC Exol manufactures a wide and varied range of textile auxiliaries used as wetting agents, emulsifiers, dispersants, dye levelling agents, lubricants and antistatics. Among our products we have anionic and nonionic surfactants: • alkyl benzene sulfonates (ABS Acid, ABSNa),

• fatty acid amide ethoxylates (ROKAmids),

• polyethylene glycols (POLIkols),

• fatty amine ethoxylates (ROKAmins),

• alcohol ethoxylates (ROKAnols),

• EO/PO block copolymers (ROKAmers),

• nonylophenol alkoksylates (ROKAfenols),

• sorbitan esters (ROKwin) and sorbitan esters ethoxylates (ROKwinol).

• fatty acid ethoxylates (ROKAcets),

SPINNING Spinning process is the initial step in manufacturing of knitwear and fabric. The major aim of spinning is to produce the quality yarn using raw material. Production of yarn from bulk of loose fibre generates the opportunity to produce union fibre. During spinning process it is very important to protect fibre from abrasion and damage. Some surfactants can ensure appropriate fibre lubricity. They also can help to emulsify oily components of recipe used in spinning process.

PCC Exol offers a collection of nonionic products, that are used to manufacture spinning agents. Our surfactants can be applied as wetting and lubrication agents, emulsifiers, low foaming additives giving the possibility to create multiple preparations for spinning process.

DESIZING

Usually warp yarn is coated with sizing agent before weaving. The major aims of using sizing preparation are:

• to reduce frictional properties of fibre, • to decrease yarn breakages on the loom, • to improve weaving productivity.

Products occurring on the surface of the warp, may adversely affect the functioning of the dye and auxiliary agent to the next steps of fibre treatment. Therefore, these size agents have to be removed before subsequent processing of the fabric. That is why the process during which the sizing agent is removed from the fibre is called desizing.

In our offer we propose PCC EXOL products intended to use in desizing process. Our surfactants give the possibility to create variety of preparations for this process.

EXOLtexline TM

SCOURING In the textile industry, one of the first steps of chemical fibre treatment is scouring process. Fibre has natural impurities: waxes, pectins, fats, oils and the others which are obtained on the surface after using size or lubricants in spinning, weaving or knitting processes. Scouring process is a very important stage in fibre treatment affecting it in further processing of fibre to be bleached and dyed successfully. Scouring agents should have excellent degreasing properties, low foaming and wetting on fibre surface. After dirt is removed, surfactants have to emulsify and disperse it.

PCC Exol offers a great variety of anionic and nonionic products, that are used to manufacture numerous scouring agents. Our nonionic products, based on different chemicals feedstock, provide possible solutions for scouring process.

EXOLtexline TM

BLEACHING Bleaching process is a chemical treatment of fibre in order to remove naturally occurring colour. Bleaching is a very important stage in fibre treatment that affects further fibre processing. Appropriate and uniform bleaching is necessary especially for dyeing process. In the bleaching bath composition usually comprises: • sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), • hydrogen peroxide, • stabilizing agent, • very significant wetting agent.

The final contents of the bath components are dependent on the type of fibre as well as the method used during the bleaching process, i.e. the exhaust method, pad steam or cold pad batch. Wetting agent may be either a blend of PCC EXOL products or a composition of PCC EXOL surfactants with some kind of solvents. The major aims of wetting agent are:

• to improve the wetting capability of the fibre, • to increase a capillarity and hydrophilicity of the dye, • to increase the availability of the dye sorption on the fibre surface, • to improve penetration of bleaching agents in the fibre, • to remove air bubbles from fibre for uniform and better bleaching.

Our anionic and nonionic products provide a numerous possible solutions for bleaching process. In our special offer we also propose a vast collection of low foaming surfactants.

PCC Exol offers an immense range of products, which are used to improve the fibre properties before the next important step in the chemical textile processing article, such as dyeing process.

EXOLtexline TM

DYEING Dyeing process is the consecutive step in the chemical processing of fibre, yarn and fabric during which the final colour of the textile article is given. In this process are used substantial numbers of the dyes including the type of chemical molecule and the resulting colour with the different possibility of applying its on the textile surface. Usually dyeing is carried out by the few methods: • periodic (exhaust method) • semi-continuous or continuous (Pad Dry, Pad Steam, Cold Pad Bach)

Dyeing bath is a composition of aqueous solution containing dye and other chemicals. Usually these auxiliary agents are surface active substances and electrolytes. The essential aims of PCC EXOL products application in dyeing are: • to improve wetting of yarn or fabric, • to improve penetration of the dye in to the fibre surface, • to uniform dispersing of the dye in bath, • to level in order to ensure uniform and reproducible distribution of the dye in fibre, yarn and fabric, • in some cases to decrease the creation of foam ability by low foaming surfactant, • to wash and remove loose bounded dye with increasing of the wetting resistance of dyes bounded with fabric.

In our offer we propose a wide range of PCC EXOL products intended to use in dyeing process. The proposed nonionic surfactants give a possibility for formation many different approaches or new innovative auxiliaries.

NOTES FOR GUIDANCE CONCERNING THE FUNCTIONAL PARAMETERS AND NOTATION USED IN THE CATALOGUE HLB

The Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance (HLB) is a parameter defining the ratio of the content of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic group of the molecule. The HLB range for non-ionic surfactants is between 0 and 20 and expresses the percentage of the hydrophilic part of the molecule.

HLB by Griffin:

HLB = 20 •

molecular weight of hydrophilic part molecular weight of the product

HLB for ester-type compounds (ethoxylated fatty acids):

HLB=20 HLB = 20*• (1 - SV ) AV where: SV AV - acid value of acids subjected to ethoxylation in mgKOH/g HLB value

Cloud point An indicator determining the behaviour of nonionic surfactants (obtained in the process of condensation with ethylene oxide) in water or in mixtures consisting of water and organic solvents. In water or in mixtures of water and organic solvents, solutions of surfactants become cloudy at certain temperaturewhen heated. The process is reversible and the substance becomes clear when cooled is referred to as the cloud point. Depending on the temperature at which the solution becomes cloudy, there are five methods of determination of cloud point: Method A – aqueous solution (10-90°C) Method B – 50 g/l NaCl solution (>90°C) Method C – 100 g/l NaCl solution (>90°C) Method D – 5 g + 45 g of 25% butyldiglycol / aqueous solution (<10°C) Method E – 5 g + 25 g of 25% butyldiglycol / aqueous solution (<10°C)
