CONSTRUCTION CHEMISTRY Sustainable Technologies
CHALLENGES OF THE MARKET OF CONSTRUCTION CHEMISTRY The construction sector is one of the biggest industrial sectors in Europe employing over 12 million citizens in the European Union. At present the key challenge of this industry is coping with the constantly growing requirements regarding safety, energy efficiency, quality and durability while simultaneously decreasing costs and construction time. The global and European market trends are obvious. In the construction chemistry sector, it’s not just product price and quality that count, but a system capable of offering modern and environmentally friendly and energy-saving technologies that are becoming more and more important, as well as a service and a guarantee. In short, a service and offer tailored to a specific Customer. Changing economic trends in the EU and throughout the world do not always support the dynamic development of the construction chemistry sector. Quoted general forecasts do not only refer to products which obviously offer new technological opportunities, they also refer to the added value offered to Customers interested in products that show the achievement of chemical sciences.
Without reliable logistics, technical support, development backup, the offer’s permanent availability and professional advising, it would be difficult to remain competitive and successful at the forefront of the construction industry. Despite the observed recovery of the construction industry, the market for construction chemicals is still difficult for producers. Each year, the requirements regarding legal regulations related to the application and production of chemical agents for construction become more and more restrictive. Moreover, these requirements are subject to frequent changes and the regulations regarding raw materials applied in their production are constantly tightened. Any changes are dictated mainly by concerns about the natural environment and the influence on health of the users of the agents.
CONSTRUCTION CHEMISTRY/02
CHALLENGES IN THE CONSTRUCTION CHEMISTRY MARKET Changes in the tightening of legal regulations have led to the necessity of investing in the design and development of new technologies e.g. in the elimination or limiting of volatile organic compounds (VOC, e.g. gasoline, formaldehyde) which occur in many products used as solvents in paints, diluents and cleaning agents used before and after painting. One should remember that technologically advanced products are usually characterised by a higher price. This aspect must be taken into account particularly in the event of running a business in markets sensitive to price changes i.e. the market of CEE and CIS. Here, Customers frequently decide to buy cheaper products rather than more efficient, technologically advanced products with better properties, especially if the quality of the products has not been confirmed by a professional. The frequent introduction of changes in legal regulations regarding the production and use of chemicals in the construction industry represents a significant problem for small and medium size manufacturers, particularly the ones operating in
a regional market. High investment costs, research and REACH registration or even the purchase of new technologies affect their competitiveness in the aggressive chemicals market. Nowadays, producers who are able to combine quality products with the lowest possible harmful effects to both people and the environment, while still maintaining a balanced price, have a clear competitive advantage.

The ancient Greeks in turn delayed wood burning by impregnating it with alum. • Flame retardants applied at present were launched in the market in the 1970’s. • In the last 10 years the number of fatal fire victims has decreased by 20%. • The research shows that the application of flame retardants in construction and its materials prolongs the time for escape during a fire by at least 15 minutes and decreases the amount of emitted heat by 75%. • In Poland there are circa 150 000 fires a year and as a result 600 people lose their lives and circa 4000 obtain injuries.

resistant to frost and scrubbing and so it doesn’t decay or rot. Its appearance does not differ from its real equivalent at all as it has its texture, colour and rings. Products made of concrete wood are used in elements of landscaping. So the material finds an application in architectural and garden arrangements such as garden paths, curbs, edges, facades, terraces, summer-houses, stairs and floors. Thanks to this modern technology it is possible to use sleepers on flower beds or to place a parquet on a garden path. Both products resemble wooden products but they are made of coloured concrete thanks to which they are durable and resistant to mechanical damage.

i
it still represents a novelty. What is it? It is glass fibre reinforced concrete or GRC which contrary to a “mere” concrete (façade, facing, construction or reinforced concrete) is reinforced with glass fibre (not less than 5%) of different length. Naturally it gives it specific properties – high density, lightness, strength and resistance to crumbling and uniform texture/smoothness, all of them very important in production of small items/elements. The applied technology of reinforcing with glass fibre gives infinite opportunities in creating space, not only industrial or public space. It is used in jewellery industry, art or in production of furniture. Thanks to high representation of details we may create concrete earrings, lamps, vases, candlesticks, dishes and other decorative elements (handles for furniture) and all limited only by our imagination.

Prodex
PCC PRODEX Since 1979 PCC PRODEX Sp. z o.o. (before PRODEX-SYSTEM Sp. z o.o.) has continuously dealt with the production of one and two-component polyurethane systems. The products offered by the company are applicable in the production of: semi-stiff and stiff insulation materials, elements of integral foams, flexible foams and glues of various applications, including mining glues. In 2010 the company PCC PRODEX became a part of the international concern PCC SE which operates in the international markets of raw materials for chemistry, transport, energy, coal, coke, fuels, plastics and metallurgy. In October 2012 PCC Rokita SA finalised an agreement for the purchase of the company PCC Prodex Sp. z o.o. with the company PCC SE which has it’s headquarters in Duisburg (the entity being superior towards the Issuer). As a result of this transaction, PCC Rokita SA acquired 100% of the shares of the company PCC Prodex Sp. z o.o. Polyurethane systems offered by PCC Prodex have obtained a number of certificates and approvals from research institutes and certifying centres such as ITB, COBR, GIG, OBAC, DNV, BV, PZH. Thanks to the high qualifications of its employees, experience and good knowledge of the market and the issues regarding processing of polyurethanes, the company offers comprehensive assistance in the implementation and application of the products. The company also offers polyurethane systems with special requirements according to Customers’ individual requirements.
CONSTRUCTION CHEMISTRY/28
Prodex
OFFER OF PCC PRODEX GLUES One of the main product groups of the company PCC Prodex Sp. z o.o. are polyurethane glues, both one and two-component glues. ADVANTAGES Glues are perfectly suitable for gluing sandwich slabs, wood, expanded polystyrene, roofing paper, paper, cardboard and typical building materials, e.g.: concrete, asbestos cement or tin. Glue’s ability for self-frothing provides perfect adhesion to porous materials. The resulting joint is resistant to low temperatures and is water-resistant. Polyurethane glues – due to their low viscosity, they may be applied without solvents, which limits the harmful influence on the environment while also facilitating gluing materials not resistant to chemicals e.g. expanded polystyrene or wetted materials. One-component glues – are pre-polymers with the contents of NCO groups and display appropriate reactivity which is strictly adjusted to a given application expressed in open time of glue and in the time it takes to bind. The glues are hardened with humidity contained in the air, it may also be accelerated by spraying subsequent layers with water. PRODUCTS: • EKOPRODUR RB2 • EKOPROMER G15 • EKOPROMER E18 Two-component glues – act on the principle of a reaction between ingredient A and ingredient B in a proportion strictly selected by the producer. The properties of joints are similar to when using one-component glues and similarly they do not contain organic solvents. Their main application: • gluing sandwich slabs • gluing construction elements • gluing wood and wood-effect materials with steel, aluminium and concrete PRODUCTS: • EKOPRODUR 1331 B2 • EKOPRODUR KW1 • EKOPRODUR KW2 At present the company is launching a two-component polyurethane glue PROMOSTAT intended for application in underground mining, namely, methane and non-methane plants, in excavations (rooms) with explosion risk “a”, “b” and “c”. PROMOSTAT is applied in: sealing cracked rock mass, enhancing dry and humid, significantly loosened rocks and coal beds and sealing cracked building constructions.

OFFER OF PCC PRODEX SPRAY Spraying polyurethane foams is a technique of putting layers of insulation directly onto the surface of an insulated structure. The spraying is performed by using appropriate high-pressure machines which provide a good mixing of the ingredients of a polyurethane system and proper spraying of the subsequent layers of insulation. APPLICATION: • insulation of roofs, walls and ceilings of industrial public utility and housing structures, both new and the existing (renovation) • insulation of industrial tanks, pipelines • enhancing the surface of a structure through spraying layers of high mechanical resistance ADVANTAGES OF INSULATION WITH SPRAYING: • during one production stage thermal and anti-moisture insulation and mechanical enhancement of the construction at its low loading are obtained • excellent insulation properties combined with a lack of thermal bridges (seamless insulation) and good packing ensure good insulation of the whole construction • perfect adhesion and stability of parameters ensures the insulation remains very durable in various weather conditions (temperature, wind, precipitations) • high yield (e.g. up to 1000 m2 of roof a day) – does not demand a big team and does not involve much a user of a structure • there is the possibility for selecting the parameters of a spray system e.g. density, reactivity, self-extinguishing properties and non-distribution of fire PRODUCTS: • EKOPRODUR S0329 – internal spray of walls and ceilings • EKOPRODUR S0540 – spray of roofs and floors • EKOPRODUR 05200 – spray stiffening and increasing mechanical resistance
CONSTRUCTION CHEMISTRY/30

OFFER OF PCC PRODEX INSULATION The basic intended use of polyurethane foams is to provide thermal insulation. Thanks to their porous structure and low index of thermal conductivity, products made of polyurethane, are very good insulators. Polyurethane foam is resistant to the presence of fungi and mould, insects and rodents do not like it either. Thanks to its resistance to practically all solvents, finished products made of frothed polyurethane foam are easy to clean and disinfect. Moreover, products made of polyurethane foam are easy to transport, process and assemble. Despite the passage of time their properties don’t change and do not ”age”. They may be applied within a temperature range of -60OC to +130OC. Depending on one’s needs the polyurethane foam may be provided in a non-flammable or self-extinguishing version and may be used for applying it manually or with a machine. Thanks to the ability of polyurethane systems to adhere to practically all materials, as well as being used (applied) in liquid form, they give a continuous insulation layer – free of thermal bridges.

OFFER OF PCC PRODEX INTEGRAL FOAM Polyurethane system of integral foam is a two-component system (A + B). Ingredient A is a mixture of polyether polyol with an ecological frothing agent in the form of fluorine hydrocarbon and an additive which ensures the appropriate properties of the finished product. Ingredient B is a pre-polymer based on MDI with strictly defined contents of the NCO groups. Ingredient A is mixed with ingredient B in the defined proportions and which forms a defined amount to ensure the finished product’s desired properties such as hardness or flexibility. The reaction (carried out with the appropriate selection of catalysts) is carried out in a controlled manner within the timeframe, including the deforming time which affects the production yield. An integral foam is applied where a product with high flexibility and high resistance to mechanical damages is required. The name of integral foams comes from English “integral skin”. Put simply, when the finished product is being produced a flexible and hard product core and a mechanically hard resistant, peel with the thickness of several millimetres is created. The most frequent application of integral foam is in the production of such items as bike saddles, armrests, car filters or flexible elements of playgrounds.
FLEXIBLE FOAM Polyurethane system of flexible formable foam is a two-component system (A + B). Ingredient A is a mixture of polyether polyol with additives that ensure the appropriate properties of the finished product. A frothing agent is carbon dioxide generated in the reaction between the components. Ingredient B is a pre-polymer based on MDI with a strictly defined contents of the NCO groups. Ingredient A is mixed with Ingredient B in a defined proportion which ensures the resulting finished product’s desired properties such as hardness or flexibility. By changing the proportion of mixing, it is possible, to an extent, to set the hardness of the finished product. Through the appropriate selection of catalysts the reactions are controlled within a characteristic timeframe and within the deforming time which is responsible for the production yield. Why “flexible formable foam”? Flexible big blocks may be cut into shapes of any dimensions. “Formable” - instead of cutting a saddle of given dimensions from a big block, one simply pours the foam into the desired form thus obtaining a finished element with significantly better properties. The most frequent application of flexible formable foam is in the production of car seats, headrests and seats of high quality upholstered furniture.
