FROM THE EDITOR

P YING FOR KEEPS X

BEHIND THE SCENES SOCCER SHOTS Photographer Tolga Kavut and I spent time on the pitch and the practice field with the players of Inter Miami FC, the David Bechkam–built team bringing professional fútbol to South Florida.

When it comes to finding fun and fascinating things to do outside of work hours, Miami has no shortage of outstanding options. That’s why this issue of Aventura Magazine is dedicated to the best of our area’s leisurely pursuits and ways to play. For fashionistas who can’t get enough mall time in their downtime, our editors have scoured the Aventura Mall to bring you five of the latest and greatest stores and stops inside Florida’s largest mall (page 28). If a spa day is on your leisure agenda, we’ve got four must-not-miss treatments that go well beyond the standard massage and manicure in “Just Say Spahhh” (page 30). Are sports more your speed? Allow us to properly introduce you to South Florida’s professional soccer team (that’s fútbol to megafans). Co-owned by none other than famed footballer David Beckham, Inter Miami CF trains and plays its home matches in Fort Lauderdale, with plans to open its 2025 season in the newly approved Miami Freedom Park. Check out Eric Barton’s “Squad Goals” on page 68 for all the details on South Florida’s Major League Soccer star power—and fútbol’s bright Floridian future. If American football is your jam, September marks the return of all things NFL. With the official kickoff of the football season upon us, you may find yourself Hard Rock Stadium–bound. Not keen to nosh on a Dolphins dog during halftime? I’ve got you covered on page 36 with my rundown of the best chef-driven concession choices in “A Foodie’s Guide to Fins Football.” In a different kind of arena altogether, tech-savvy engineers are building and battling some of the fanciest (and deadliest) robots you’ve ever seen. Turn to page 76 for Christiana Lilly’s “Ready, Robots” feature for a look at three Miami-based bot-fighting teams who duke it out to the (digital) death each week on Discovery’s fan-favorite BattleBots TV show. And for those who find power in flowers, don’t miss Ginger Harris’ “Orchid Obsessisions” on page 82 for a peek into the world of orchid fanciers and the local scientists dedicated to studying and restoring these wild wonders in South Florida’s swamplands. From drinks and dining to arts and activities to sports, spas, shopping, and beyond, I hope you’ll find a Miami-made way to get your leisure on in this month’s pages.

COURTESY FUNDACIÓN MARIANO RODRÍGUEZ

MEMORIES OF MARIANO Roosters, life in the countryside, tropical fruits, fishermen, and more are on display at the Perez Museum of Art in Miami (PAMM) in “Mariano: Variations on a Theme,” which pays tribute to Cuban artist Mariano Rodríguez (1912-1990). Known in the art world by his first name, Mariano was a part of the island’s avant-garde art scene, the second generation of modernists who used their talents to present a vision of Cuba’s identity on the heels of revolution. He studied under Mexican painter Manuel Rodríguez Lozano in 1936, lighting an ember of national pride. As showcased throughout his portfolio, Mariano sprinkles el gallo, or the rooster, in his paintings—imagery of a peasant woman embracing the bird on her lap, or a fowl proudly strutting his crimson comb. Mariano’s works range from abstract expressionism to grotesque imagery, with his six-decade career spanning almost the entirety of the Cuban modernist movement. The exhibition runs through January and is organized by the McMullen Museum of Art, Boston College, in collaboration with the Fundación Mariano Rodríguez. Pescador, 1955 (pamm.org) —Christiana Lilly

AVENTURIST Anca Barbu has designed countless handbags, including her sought-after “This is Not a Birkin.”

TRENDING

THE IT BAG

As a kid, Anca Barbu was a troublemaker who would paint on everything—including household items. As an adult, she’s turned that mischievousness into a business. Now the owner of Custom Bag Designs and Anca Barbu Bags, she marries her love for fashion and art by painting on purses, from envelope clutches to top-handle bags; one of her most coveted designs is the cheeky “This is Not a Birkin” bag. She’s sold her work to more than 500 stores throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, St. Barts, and Monaco. Here, Barbu shares more about creating these iconic accessories. (custombagdesigns.com) —C.L. AVM: Where do you draw inspiration? Barbu: I get my ideas from anything I see that I find beautiful. It may be a piece of art in a museum or an art book, a nice view, landscape, building, flower, plant, animal, design, or pattern I see during a trip. How long does it take to complete a bag? It takes several hours. It’s a complex process since all bags have multiple layers of paint and most

designs have multiple colors, and I have to wait for the paint to dry in between layers and colors. What made you want to expand to create bags under your own line? Some bags are not “paint friendly” due to either the material, finish, or size and shape of their design. So, I decided to create and manufacture my own bags, which I design myself.

Any exciting news to share? I’m very excited to announce my new fall collection of baroque and luxurious metallic designs and for my couturier shows in Las Vegas and New York City. I’m also in the process of manufacturing a new bag that will be unique in its design and features, like no other bag in the current market‚ but this is a surprise for Art Basel.

AVENTURIST NEIGHBORHOOD GUIDE

All Eyes on the Ironside

Is it a neighborhood, a complex, or a shopping center? Whatever you want to call it, the Ironside is the hub of Miami’s Buena Vista. Featuring a collection of beauty salons, boutiques, art studios, cafés, wellness centers, and restaurants, the mixed-use space is the vision of Ofer Mizrahi, who was at the forefront of such hugely popular neighborhoods as Wynwood and the Miami Design District. The Ironside also offers event space and hosts yoga classes and theater. As you walk through the art-adorned walls, don’t forget to peek at the Pollinator’s Corridor, lemon grove, and arboretum. Not sure what to explore first? Discover some of the Ironside’s gems below. (miamiironside.com) —C.L. FINE FRENCHIE Valeria Krasavina may be the founder of the fashion and lifestyle brand Fine Frenchie, but the CEO is her French bulldog, Rabby. The pup’s likeness adorns coasters, candles, scarves, art prints, and greeting cards, with Rabby taking on the persona of icons from the art, fashion, and music worlds. Think: a Frenchie with Grace Jones’ boundary-pushing fashion, Andy Warhol’s platinum wig, or Princess Diana’s revenge dress. In Krasavina’s boutique you’ll also find pieces from her eponymous fashion label, a collection of tulle looks fit for rocker ballerinas. (finefrenchie.com)

IRONSIDE PIZZA Make your way through the garden for dishes at Ironside Pizza, a whimsical indoor-outdoor restaurant with BYOB. It serves up Neapolitanstyle pizza alongside other delicious bites including fresh-made pasta, involtini, artichoke salad, paninis, and a to-die-for tiramisu. Schedule a cooking class for date night, enjoy a bottle of wine in the alfresco Verde lounge, or host your next company happy hour in La Sala. (pizzaironside.com)

MERCY POTTERY Celebrating its first year in business, Mercy Pottery is the brainchild of Mercedes “Mercy” Gavazzi, a furniture-designer-turned-ceramic-entrepreneur who was drawn to the Ironside’s sense of community. Here, beginner clay throwers can try their hand at the craft, creating everything from mugs to vases and plates. But most importantly, Gavazzi wants visitors to discover the therapeutic nature of the spinning wheel. (mercypottery.com) KREL It doesn’t get more locally made than Krel, where Karelle Levy makes size-inclusive clothing on-site with her knitting machine, affectionately named Maggie. TRAGEDY AND TRADITION

M

ore than a year has gone by, but Nicolas Fusco is still haunted by the night in June 2021 when his grandparents, Maria and Gonzalo Torre, perished when their condo in Surfside’s Champlain Towers South collapsed. For Fusco and his family, the couple was more than just a pair of names on the list of missing and dead residents. “Babi” and “Papi” (as Fusco calls them) were native to Cuba. In the tradition of their homeland, Maria was known as a master cigar roller. For his part, Gonzalo jokingly claimed to be a “master smoker.” “In classic Cuban-Miami fashion, my grandfather would smoke a cigar at the front desk of his hotel every day,” Fusco says of Miami Beach’s James Hotel that the Torres owned (and that Fusco’s family still operates). “On many occasions, I would join him in smoking a Cuban-style cigar, drinking Cuban coffee, telling jokes, and sharing stories.” As his way of keeping the memory of his grandparents alive, Fusco recently launched a line of high-quality, hand-rolled cigars in several flavor profiles that commemorate the Torres’ lives. Fusco named the brand El Mago (which translates to “the wizard”) in homage

to the magic his grandparents created in his life. But the moniker is also derived from the first two letters from each of their first names. “It is my honor to keep their legacy alive and share their story through a tradition that was passed down from one generation to the next,” he says. “El Mago is an ode to their love, life journey, and incredible legacy.” (elmagocigars.com) –Kristen Desmond LeFevre

Nicolas Fusco’s new El Mago cigar brand (which comes packaged in a vibrant nod to Miami’s Art Deco vibes) honors his grandparents, who were among the victims of the 2021 collapse of Champlain Towers South in Surfside.

Democratizing DANCE Founded by Miami native Ryan Breslow (who, when he’s not shuffle dancing, is the billionaire founder and CEO of Bolt, a tech company aiming to bring secure one-click checkout to the web), The Movement has a simple mission: to unite the world through dance. Breslow says he started The Movement— which has outposts in Miami, New York, and Los Angeles—in hopes of bringing dance to those who struggle to afford formal lessons. Partnering with local instructors and studios to provide free classes, Breslow’s Movement removes the cost barriers for anyone who wants to learn to dance or move their body in new ways. From reggaeton to breakdancing, salsa, yoga, and beyond, there’s a Magic City class sure to get you moving, grooving, and feeling great. (themvmt.org/miami) –K.D.L. 22

PROOF POSITIVE IT’S “SEE YOU LATER,” SIESTA KEY AND “HOLA,” MIAMI FOR REALITYTV-STAR-TURNED-ENTREPRENEUR JULIETTE PORTER, WHO’S MAKING WAVES WITH HER BODY-POSITIVE SWIMWEAR BRAND, JMP THE LABEL BY MELISSA PUPPO

Y

ou might recognize Juliette Porter as the star of MTV’s reality show, Siesta Key; she’s been a founding member of the hit series since it premiered in 2017. But today, the brunette stunner has outgrown the small beach town, and what better place to reinvent yourself than Miami? “I was coming to Miami a lot before to go out and party, but I wanted to really live here and expand my career,” says Porter. That new career is in swimwear, with the creation of JMP The Label, a premier brand for women, men, and kids. Porter’s line is grabbing the attention of fashionistas and celebs alike; her collection at Miami Swim Week was one of the breakout stars of the summer under the Paraiso Tent at Collins Park. Made for what Porter calls the “independent babe on the go,” JMP’s pieces are thoughtfully designed and crafted from luxurious (and often sustainable) fabrics. But the brand’s claim to fame is its dedi-

24

cation to body positivity and size inclusivity. “Anyone can pick from our site and find something that works for them, works for their body, and makes them feel beautiful and confident,” she says. JMP currently carries suits in sizes up to 2X, but Porter says the brand will soon expand its sizing to cater to an even wider range of body types. She’s engaging her clients with focus groups to hear their concerns—and to subsequently design pieces that meet their needs. “There’s such a divide between regular sizes, like extra small through large, and then there’s a whole other section that are sizes anything above that,” says Porter. “They should all be together to make everyone feel like they’re perfect the way they are.” Not one to shy away from using her fame as a platform for change, Porter called out

Instagram on her stories back in June in an effort to address Internet trolls who send cruel messages about her appearance. She’s focused, she says, on what can be done to stop the spread of online hate and shame. “I want to make it known to others that they’re not alone, and we have to put an end

to it,” she says. It’s all part of what fuels her drive to offer pieces that make everyone feel good in the skin they’re in, she adds. This fall, fans of JMP can shop Porter’s reinvented Sienna collection, featuring new color ways along with upgraded crocheted offerings and tiger print pieces. “We try to focus on upcoming trends and big cultural moments when it comes to designing,” she says. “We also look at European fashion and try to stay ahead of the game.” Porter also designs beach-ready accessories and dabbles in activewear as it aligns with her passions and has become even more important to her since she moved to a wellness-oriented city like Miami. “I want to expand in the future to have more activewear and get

the awareness out there that we want to be a well-rounded brand and not always just swimwear.” What’s next for Porter? Though she’s busy filming Season 5 of Siesta Key, she plans to partner with Miami-area boutiques to bring an in-person shopping experience to local clientele of JMP. “I’d love to do collaborations in the future with other brands that are like-minded and expand and create a larger base of people [who] know about us and love us,” she says. Workout bliss: Sweat440. It’s a circuit, and it’s only 40 minutes long. I burn a ton of calories in it. I’m addicted. Favorite accessory: The bag my boyfriend just bought me for my birthday. It’s a Dior, it’s white, and she’s beautiful. IG or TikTok: Instagram. I haven’t sat down and learned how to properly TikTok yet. Go-to drink order: Tequila soda with a splash of pineapple On self-love: I think I’m fun and a good time. I make myself laugh, so I feel like that’s good, right? Beauty must: I have to have fake eyelashes. I’m not complete without them. Her personal inspiration: I can’t pick just one person, but my [business] partner, Jamie [Washburn]. She’s hardworking and smart, and she keeps me going on days that I want to quit. I look up to her, and she’s awesome. Advice worth sharing: Reese Witherspoon told me on Instagram that other people’s opinions are more about them than they are about you and they’re their business and not yours. I think that’s good advice to follow and to just do what makes you happy. Do what you think is best, and let the other people just watch and not let it affect where you’re going.

LUXE LIFE

The Magic City is home to a number of divine day spas. But if you’re seeking more than just your average massage and mani, treat yourself to one of these sensational spas—with truly unique options unavailable anywhere else in South Florida.

NEXT-GEN GOODNESS Carillon Miami Wellness Resort

If there’s one Miami resort that is at the forefront of innovative wellness and balanced indulgence, it’s the Carillon. At every turn, you’ll find ways to improve your overall well-being, from a

cutting-edge wellness center to fresh eats at the water’s edge. The spa mixes Western, Eastern, alternative, and aesthetic medicine for custom treatment plans tailored to each guest. Amazing Amenities: Get ready for your R&R with the thermal hydrotherapy circuit, designed to stimulate circulation, relieve pain, and decrease stress. Make time for the experiential rains, the crystal steam room, igloo, and vitality tub. Must-Try Treatment: The Carillon has been gaining traction for its touchless spa menu, which originally launched in 2020 to help visitors and resort members feel more comfortable returning to the spa setting during the pandemic. The menu now boasts 15 options catered to each visitor’s desired goals, from mediation to fat loss. A few favorites include The Somadome, the world’s first technology-enabled mediation pod that uses color, sound, and energy therapies to help guests reach a meditative state. Another is Dermashape, which shapes, sculpts, and flushes stored fat and toxins using a heating pad to release stagnant lymph fluid. (carillonhotel. com) —Melissa Puppo

With a property as lavish and historic as the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, it only makes sense that its Lapis Spa extends such grandeur. Let stunning ocean views set the scene for a day of pampering as you partake in relaxing massages, soothing facials, body wraps, and more. Amazing Amenities: Before your treatment, take advantage of the amenities including Water Journeys ranging from a 75-foot, multi-temperature jetted pool to a eucalyptus steam bath to the Bleau Rain Room, where multiple jets massage your body with streams of warm and cool water. A spa wristband grants you access to the beach and the property’s 11 pools for post-spa bliss. Must-Try Treatment: Anything from the Ayurvedic Ritual menu. Derived from Sanskrit, ayurveda means “life and knowledge” and is one of the world’s oldest healing methods. A top choice is the Chakra Balancing Massage, which restores balance and inner tranquility. The body’s seven chakras (or “energy centers”) are anointed with herbal-infused oil and chakra-specific crystals to soothe your mind and spirit. The massage utilizes a Kansa wand on your back to help oxygenate the body as well as drain lymph nodes. The experience concludes with a foot treatment using a Tiscah bowl. CALMING COMMUNITY The Standard Spa

This holistic, hydrotherapy spa-hotel is set on a private island. Part recovery center, part hydrotherapy playground, part new-age ashram, The Standard Spa is anything but standard. In fact, it’s downright international, featuring a Turkish-style hammam, a Roman waterfall hot tub, and a Finnish sauna. Amazing Amenities: Taking inspiration from the ancient bathing rituals and bathhouses that were once gathering spaces for both socializing and relaxing, The Standard Spa celebrates all things communal. From rubs and scrubs in the hammam to mud baths in the mud lounge, there are seemingly endless options to enjoy and administer as an individual or in groups—including meditation, acupuncture, astrology, and several types of yoga. Must-Try Treatment: Go for the definitive bathhouse experience with the Soul Temple, a treatment offering refuge via steam, heat, scent, and touch through a four-step hammam ritual. To start, your therapist will wash you down in the scrub room with a purifying mint salt wash and a heavenly lemon-coffee-blossom-olive-stone scrub. Next, release your tension during a decadent 60-minute cardamom amber oil massage. Afterward, back in the hammam, you’ll detoxify with a clay polish and then finish in a luscious neroli cypress bath soak that will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. SACRED STAYS

Tierra Santa Healing House at Faena If you can’t jet off to South America to experience healing rituals and treatments at the hands of a local shaman, then Tierra Santa Healing House (set on the third floor of Miami Beach’s Faena Hotel) is your next best bet. Tierra Santa (which is Spanish for “holy land”) is designed to be a sanctuary, acting as a de facto spiritual center for the hotel. Amazing Amenities: Before or after your treatment, treat yourself to the Wet Spa—the centerpiece of which is one of the largest hammams on the East Coast featuring a central waterfall, jasmine-infused steam, and heated Amazonite stones. Add a traditional bathing ritual to your experience and slather yourself with ingredients from the spa’s own organic, handcrafted range of cleansing soaps, healing muds, purifying scrubs, and nourishing oils for the ultimate cleansing and restoration of mind, body, and spirit. Then, move on to the marble Ice Parlor for an interplay of hot and cold that is said to improve circulation, stimulate metabolism, and strengthen immunity. Must-Try Treatment: Indulge in the Tree of Life Vibrations, a signature healing arts treatment rooted in the ancient Eastern art of sound massage. Aromatic essential oils are poured along tension points on your spine, as hot Brazilian rose stones are applied. But the centerpiece of the treatment is a quartet of Nepalese singing bowls, first introduced as ambient sound, then as actual instruments of massage. When placed along your back and struck with a soft mallet, each bowl infuses its vibrations and tones throughout your body—balancing the seven chakras and taking you to new levels of pleasure and relaxation. AVENTURIST SELF-CARE

THE AGE OF ANXIETY CAN TECHNOLOGY SOOTHE OUR ANXIOUS MINDS AND BODIES? WE TEST FIVE ANTI-ANXIETY TOOLS. BY KRISTEN DESMOND LEFEVRE

It’s not just the jitters. It’s anxiety, and according to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in three Americans has experienced it. While there’s no app for instant inner peace, the tech sector is working on biohacks to tackle anxiety. Here, we highlight five of today’s most promising anti-anxiety tech tools to try now. FOCUS YOUR MIND: MUSE What is it? Muse-S is a brain-sensing headband that uses EEG technology to read your body’s electrical signals. Why use it? Muse pairs with app-based meditations that offer real-time biofeedback. Use it in a state of anxiety, and you’ll hear the sound of a heavy rainstorm. Relax your thoughts, and the rain lightens. Clear your mind, and the rain will clear, too. Over time, you’ll learn to train your brain to go from crazed to clear. ($399, choosemuse.com)

RECLAIM YOUR BREATH: CALMIGO What is it? Like a personal breathing trainer, CalmiGo helps you regulate your breath. Why use it? Exhale into CalmiGo and follow its lights and vibration cues. Inhale for a whiff of a relaxing scent (peppermint, lavender, or bergamot). You’re targeting three senses: visually tracking a light sequence, arousing your sense of smell, and feeling focus-friendly vibrations. ($179, calmigo.com)

GROUND YOUR BODY: HIGHERDOSE PEMF GOMAT What is it? Combining infrared technology with PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) and crystal therapy, this mat promotes a full reset for body and mind. Why use it? GoMat gives you a passive (and portable) space to create a state of calm. Sit or lie down on the mat to ground yourself in waves of calming energy at a variety of frequencies, promoting recovery and encouraging relaxation. ($499, higherdose.com)

34

TAP INTO CALM: BI-TAPP What is it? Often used in EMDR therapy, tappers help you self-regulate when anxiety comes calling—without scheduling an emergency therapy session. Connect the tappers to wristbands, slide them into your pockets or socks, or hold them in your hands. The back-and-forth tapping (which feels like the flick of a finger) can ease you out of your anxious state. Why use it? Anxiety happens when your amygdala is triggered, sending your parasympathetic nervous system into a panic. By activating both hemispheres of your brain, Bi-Tapp redirects the amygdala, keeping you from being stuck in fight-or-flight mode. ($189, bi-tapp.com)

CALM YOUR GUT: RELIEFBAND What is it? This wearable neuromodulator blocks feelings of anxiety-related nausea. Why use it? Relieve your queasiness without popping a pill or chugging Pepto Bismol. Strap ReliefBand to your wrist, and a series of pulses stimulate your median and vagus nerves, relieving nausea by normalizing the messages your brain sends to your stomach. ($249, reliefband.com)

HARD ROCK STADIUM

A Foodie’s Guide to Fins Football EATING YOUR WAY THROUGH A FOOTBALL GAME NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD BY KRISTEN DESMOND LEFEVRE

Hard Rock Stadium (HRS) is all about the sports. But food—and really good food at that—is at the heart of many of the venue’s concessions. Sure, you can grab a Shula burger or a Dolphins dog in between quarters. But if you’re looking for something more chef-driven, local (about 70 percent of food offered at HRS hails from South Florida-based vendors), health-conscious, or just downright delicious, then we’ve got you covered for the 2022-2023 season. (hardrockstadium.com)

What: Sushi Maki What: Café Versailles Where to find It: Section 347 Order up: Grab a classic Cuban sandwich (with a side of plantain chips) or an order of empanadas or croquetas at the HRS outpost of Café Versailles—the Little Havana staple that’s been feeding hungry Miamians with its traditional (and delicious) Cuban cuisine since 1971. (versaillesrestaurant.com)

What: O-B House pancakes What: Chef Creole Where to find it: Section 117 Order up: If comfort food is what you crave, don’t miss the chance to nosh on jambalaya, stewed chicken, oxtail, and conch from this concession stand run by Wilkinson Sejour, who owns seven locations (including the HRS outpost) of this Little Haiti favorite. (chefcreole.com)

What: Mojo Donuts Where to find it: Section 217 Order up: Whether you need a breakfast of champions or a sweet dessert to celebrate a Fins win, find your way through the crowds to Mojo Donuts for their Abuelita donut—filled with arroz con leche (from a 100-year-old recipe) and topped powdered sugar and dulce de leche. Or try the Deco Delight: a donut stuffed with banana puree and topped with blueberries and strawberries. The stand offers a dozen different flavors and creates limited editions for special events. (mojodonuts.com)

Where to find it: Section 146 Order up: Sometimes you just need an order of Fins flapjacks—these sweet offerings from the pancake savants at Fort Lauderdale-favorite O-B House are a must-have on early game days (or any day). The restaurant’s signature buttermilk pancakes come with a selection of toppings, but we’re partial to the blueberry variety. Grab an order during an early matchup, pair it with a Bloody Mary, and score a sweet victory in the stadium concession game. (o-bhouse.com)

What: Fuku Where to find it: Sections 116 and 319 Order up: Celeb chef David Chang’s fried chicken sandwiches have been a fan-favorite since his HRS joint opened in 2017. Options include the classic fried chicken sando and the spicy version (don’t skip the ssäm sauce), but unique to the HRS outpost is the CBR, which takes Chang’s original spicy fried chicken sandwich up a notch with the addition of bacon and ranch. (eatfuku.com)

FOOD FRIENDLY

AVOIDING ALLERGENS DRINKING GAME

TOAST YOUR TEAM You can always find a Bud Light or a Heineken to toast the team, but if you’re more of a local beer fan, try these two tasty options from among the more than 15 South Florida– based brews offered in the Tap Room on the 100 level: • Born & Raised, a 4.9 percent ABV blood orange kölsch that is a collab between Veza Sur and the Dolphins (vezasur.com) • El Jefe, a coconut-based Hefeweizen offered by Wynwood’s own J. Wakefield Brewing (jwakefieldbrewing.com)

Have a food allergy or intolerance? In a first-of-its-kind partnership, the Miami Dolphins have been named a FARECheck partner by FARE, a leading food-allergy advocacy organization. This season, HRS will become the first NFL venue to create a special kitchen designed to produce allergy-friendly concession offerings. “We spent a great deal of time evaluating the in-stadium experience for the 2021 season,” says Jeremy Walls, senior vice president and chief revenue officer of the Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium. “Working with FARE will help service our fans and raise awareness on food allergies. The new kitchen will limit the use of gluten, nuts, milk, and shellfish allergens at all [HRS] events, including Miami Dolphins home games, giving every fan…access to allergy-friendly options—with four grab-andgo sites and four concession stands on the 100, 200, and 300 levels.” “Going out with your family and friends to take in a game is fun and relaxing, especially when you are confident that you will have access to allergy-friendly food options when you need them,” says Lisa Gable, CEO of FARE. “FARE’s partnership with the Dolphins in providing a FARECheck-certified kitchen will help millions of people make food choices that work for them.” (foodallergy.org) SEPTEMBER 2022

T

he supplemental protein industry racks in billions of dollars annually, and you needn’t look far to spot the marketing: There are aisles dedicated to protein bars and powders at grocery stores, plus countless online ads and influencer campaigns suggesting that drinking protein shakes after workouts and snacking on bars throughout the day is the secret to building stronger muscles and losing unwanted weight. But what’s really in these powders and bars? Because the Food and Drug Administration classifies these products as dietary supplements, manufacturers do not have to disclose all their ingredients. Many are loaded with added and/or artificial sugars, as well as processed proteins (a leading cause of inflammation) from either whey (cow), soy, or pea. Other potential ingredients include chemical thickeners, binders, and emulsifiers; pesticides; BPA; and heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, and mercury. Protein is essential for the body to build muscle, regulate the immune system, and support hormone, collagen, and elastin

production. When you eat a protein, whether it be plant or animal, your body breaks it down into amino acids. Your liver then sorts out what it needs and sends it where it needs to go; the rest is flushed out in your urine. Your body does this very efficiently if the protein is a real, whole source from plants or animals. Remember: If you don’t recognize an ingredient, neither will your body.

LETTER PERFECT Monogram Collection note cards ($80 for 10), Dear Annabelle, dearannabelle.com Sure, you can text a thank you, but it won’t have the impact of an engraved, gold-edged, heavyweight card personalized with your monogram (and, presumably, inscribed with your cleverest musings). THIS POWERHOUSE INGREDIENT CAN RESTORE HYDRATION, SOOTHE INFLAMMATION, AND IMPROVE ELASTICITY BY TRISTAN DYER

While many skin care trends come and go, hyaluronic acid has lived up to the hype—helping skin to retain moisture while preventing fine lines and wrinkles. Naturally found in the fluids within our joints and eyes, hyaluronic acid can be derived from both animal and plant sources, with the vast majority coming from the latter via a process known as microbial fermentation. Most commonly applied as a daily topical treatment, hyaluronic acid also has the ability to reduce swelling and dermatitis. Take the plunge and revitalize your skin with these highly regarded products.

How did you start your multifaceted platform that promotes size inclusivity and empowers women of all sizes?

What is the mission behind your cult favorite beauty brand Megababe?

I started my blog, The 12ishStyle, to help women who were a size 12-plus find stylish clothing. Once this began to take off, I realized most women, regardless of their size, were also unhappy with their bodies. I wanted to help change that narrative, which is what I aim to do through my blog, Instagram (@katiesturino), podcast, and solution-oriented beauty brand, Megababe.

Our mission at Megababe is to help tackle “taboo” body issues and provide effective solutions for people to feel more comfortable and confident in their own skin. Things like thigh chafe, boob sweat, and B.O. are typically known as taboo topics that people don’t discuss. But in reality these are everyday issues women face. I love being able to create products that solve these problems, like our Thigh Rescue chafe stick, Bust Dust, and our full line of clean deodorant, like our newly launched Cream Deo.

Your #SuperSizeTheLook and #MakeMySize content series have created a body positive environment on social media. How did the idea for these come about?

#SuperSizeTheLook kicked off in 2015 to show that style has no size. It’s a weekly series where I re-create the look of a celebrity or public figure whose style I admire. #SuperSizeTheLook is never about who wore it better, because that mindset only keeps us down and pits women against each other. My #MakeMySize campaign is when I try on the biggest size a brand offers just to shed light on how small it is on me. It’s a way for me to speak up to these brands in hopes they extend their sizing, and some brands have actually listened, which has been really rewarding.

REAL TALK WITH...

Katie Sturino

For this body acceptance advocate, author, and entrepreneur, confidence is the most important accessory BY KATHERINE LANDE

54

I’m really into self-care! I love taking care of my skin and daily wellness rituals like meditation using my Insight Timer app, morning walks on the beach, and [stopping] working at 7 p.m. My nighttime skin care routine is always a must—my face is always glowing before bed, and I wake up looking new! I’m loving the Sunday Riley Good Genes lactic acid treatment right now. What’s an unexpected lesson you learned when writing your book, Body Talk?

What would you tell your 18-year-old self today?

I would tell her to put her confidence on first. Truly, what people react to is confidence, and when you’re not confident, people pick up on it.

Describe your self-care routine or recommendations.

Megababe, Katie Sturino’s cult favorite beauty brand, helps people feel more comfortable and confident in their own skin with an array of products that tackle “taboo” body issues.

It was quite hard for me emotionally to relive some of the stuff in Body Talk. You’d figure that after all of this work throughout the years, I’d be numb to it and it would be easy, but it wasn’t. Overall, it was a really great healing process for me getting everything out there. I have loved connecting with women about the book and their own journeys.

BELMOND

BY PAUL RUBIO

CIPRIANI, A BELMOND HOTEL, VENICE The essence of Italy’s la dolce vita

A bridge-linked maze of Renaissance-era palazzos, Gothic edifices, Byzantine domes, and Baroque buildings, Venice rises as a man-made water world reflecting architectural and cultural influences that span nearly a millennium. To fully embrace the magic of these history-steeped islands, head south of St. Mark’s Square to the isle of Giudecca, where Cipriani, A Belmond Hotel delivers the best in Venetian views, old-school glamour, and modern hospitality. Void of the crowds and confined spaces of Venice proper, sprawling Cipriani promises comforts uncommon to the region. Think: oversize guest rooms and suites, an Olympic-size swimming pool, artstrewn gardens, traditional vineyards, and personality-driven spots for indulging in Italian gastronomy and mixology. Days here begin with strong coffee

and regional delicacies at waterside Caffè San Giorgio, cozy under an umbrella-capped table, admiring the gondolas and wooden boats that float by. Board the five-minute water taxi to Venice’s main island, where ambles through labyrinthine alleys lead to unexpected discoveries in history, retail therapy, and Instagram-worthy moments. Come early afternoon, don’t miss the chance to lunch light—and drink heavy—at Cip’s Club, the property’s famed overwater restaurant with unmatched panoramas of the Venetian skyline. Then, relax in your elegantly appointed guest room or suite, enjoying the breeze from your balcony or terrace—every unit has one—or capitalize on the myriad alfresco amenities before primping for a night of Michelin-starred cuisine, theater, opera, and/or cocktails at celeb-frequented Harry’s Bar. LE MEURICE, PARIS

Paris’ most coveted address

Clockwise from above: Tuileries Garden; Restaurant le Meurice Alain Ducasse; view from the Belle Etoile suite; an Executive Room, Park View.

Twelve exalted properties in the City of Light carry official Palace status, a distinction above five stars and indicative of a starring role in French heritage, culture, and gastronomy. Among this elite group, none garners more global reverence than Le Meurice, Paris’ original palace hotel—a destination that’s equal parts ultra-luxury and living museum. Since its debut in 1835, Le Meurice has commanded the spotlight, shaped by the dignitaries, artists, and thinkers who’ve called the palace home (names like Dalí, Picasso, and Warhol) as well as pioneering achievements in hospitality. For example, Le Meurice was the first hotel in Paris to have a telephone (circa 1889) and the first to install a private bathroom in every guest room and suite (circa 1907). Nowadays, the property remains equally relevant by offering the timeless, distinctly Parisian stay that travelers desire. Renovated in 2019, guest rooms and suites epitomize the Parisian dream, with handcrafted classic French-style furniture and swoon-worthy views; book an Executive Room, Park View for a panorama that spans Tuileries Garden, the Louvre, Place de la Concorde, and the Eiffel Tower. Multiple Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse oversees the property’s dining in its entirety, meaning every meal is one to remember. Meanwhile, the hotel’s Dalí-inspired common spaces invite hotel guests and visitors—dressed to kill in haute couture—to sit, pose, and ruminate on the splendor that surrounds. Sip and savor while mingling with A-listers at Le Joy, an open-air garden restaurant at the hotel’s core. Head to the design-forward subterranean spa and pool for pampering between sightseeing. Or simply venture outside for immediate access to the Champs-Élysées, Arc de Triomphe, and Avenue Montaigne, Paris’ most esteemed high street. (hotelsbarriere.com) «

PARK HYATT VIENNA

In recent years, Vienna has gained traction as a capital of European cool, with plenty of oldmeets-new marvels to prove it. Case in point: Park Hyatt Vienna, an exceptional adaptive reuse of the Bank of Austria’s former headquarters in the heart of Vienna. Behind the stately earlytwentieth-century facade of the UNESCO-listed building, uncover a hotel that balances finance and history with finesse. Underground, the original floor-to-ceiling vault door opens to a strong room aglow in blues and yellows, anchored by a sleek swimming pool and flanked by a state-of-the-art gymnasium and world-class spa. At ground level, the cashier’s hall—with original stained-glass pieces and exquisite marble columns—now houses The Bank Brasserie and Bar, serving new interpretations of brasserie classics. A central marble staircase and glass elevator leads to 143 rooms and suites exuding Viennese sophistication, all with large closets and bathrooms and embellished in dark woods, mother-of-pearl, and marble. Thanks to the building’s original design, units on the first and second floors boast double-story ceilings, branding them the most coveted within Park Hyatt’s inventory. The former bank’s riches spill to the surrounding area, too. Just beyond the doors of the Park Hyatt Vienna, discover such renowned sights as Café Central, a storied hangout once frequented by the likes of Freud and Trotsky; the Hofburg, the former Imperial Palace of the Habsburg dynasty; and St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna’s most adorned religious structure. Caribbean QUEEN NASSAU’S BAHA MAR CHAMPIONS THE EVOLUTION OF MEGARESORT CHIC BY PAUL RUBIO

When the $4.2 billion excess that is Baha Mar debuted on Nassau’s Cable Beach in 2017, it revolutionized the concept of a megaresort. Despite its ambitious size, the property shined for its top-notch service, quality brands, and world-class experiences. Five years later, Baha Mar continues to wow with new activations, eateries, and events, plus an array of posh accommodations. Baha Mar boasts numerous room and suite structures across its three hotel brands: Grand Hyatt, SLS, and Rosewood. Chief among these offerings are the 6,200-square-foot oceanside six-bedroom villas at Rosewood Baha Mar, which are the resort’s most lavish accommodations to date. When venturing outside, consider spending ample time at the new 15-acre Baha Bay, home to a sprawling “luxury waterpark” that speaks to Baha Mar’s larger-than-life allure. Sure, there are plenty of thrilling slides—don’t miss the high-speed Dueling Riptide

Coaster—plus a 500,000-gallon wave pool, a lazy river, and a surf simulator. But throw in some gourmet food options, an outdoor casino, and a beach club (equipped with full-service private cabanas, hammocks, and two infinity-edge swimming pools) and discover exactly how a waterpark garners elite status. Augmenting an already impressive collection of more than 45 restaurants and bars are two of the biggest names in the industry. Chef Marcus Samuelsson puts a Southern spin on Bahamian cuisine with Marcus at Baha Mar Fish + Chop House, featuring crave-worthy dishes such as conch croquettes and spicy prawns complemented by juicy fried chicken and marshmallow-crusted sweet potato mash. A second outpost by Samuelsson, the more casual Streetbird on the Beach, serves the likes of crispy chicken sandwiches (slathered in hot pepper mayo) and calypso fritters (a conch–salt fish hybrid) from a food truck anchored in the sand. Icon Daniel Boulud imports a taste of France with Café Boulud, The Bahamas. Here, the marquee chef peppers a menu of French classics and signature dishes

(hello, Tournedos Rossini) with Bahamian catch and produce. As the world embraces the return of person-to-person interaction, Baha Mar follows suit with daily instructor-led programming. Try the one-of-a-kind Flamingo Yoga, stretching and planking among the property’s resident flock. Choose from a roster of art classes conducted at The Current Gallery & Art Center, including botanical leaf printing, landscape painting, and acrylic pouring. Hone your cooking skills with sessions for the entire family, or select others catering to just adults or kids. Alternatively, craft your own schedule of active and leisurely pursuits, capitalizing on the surfeit of amenities. With multiple swimming pools, the Caribbean’s only flagship ESPA spa, the 18-hole Jack Nicklaus signature design Royal Blue Golf Course, the largest casino in the Caribbean, and a shopping arcade of 30 high-end brands, everything from fun in the sun to retail therapy is on tap. Beyond its glorious day-to-day delights, Baha Mar has found a niche hosting events that appeal to gourmands, sports enthusiasts, philanthropists, and more. One highlight from the past year was A Taste of SLS at Baha Mar, a decadent dining experience curated by the award-winning personalities behind the property’s restaurants, coupled with an intimate performance by musician John Legend. For 2022, the event is rebranding as The Bahamas Culinary & Arts Festival, slated for October 21-23. Another annual favorite is the Baha Mar Cup, a celebrity tennis fundraiser that last year saw Andy Roddick, Victoria Azarenka, and Mark Knowles battle it out in the name of charity while also engaging in matches with attendees and coaching local school children. The next Baha Mar Cup is scheduled for December 9-11, with another all-star lineup set to participate.

Without resting on the laurels of its initial success, Baha Mar surfaces as the pinnacle of megaresort chic, giving travelers the luxury of choice. This idyllic island getaway promises endless combinations of escapism, excitement, and indulgences, resulting in a memorable vacation for every personality within today’s travel set. Mr. Zimmer’s OPUS BMW’S ALL-ELECTRIC IX50 TAKES A HANS-ON APPROACH TO SOUNDING SPEEDY BY HOWARD WALKER

T

he music of German composer Hans Zimmer is legendary. Over the last 35 years, he’s penned some of the greatest film scores of all time, from Rain Man and The Lion King, to The Dark Knight and Dune. Now there’s one more musical arrangement he can add to his repertoire: BMW’s all-new, all-electric iX SUV. Yep, every synthesized whirr, whee, whoop, and whizz is courtesy of Mr. Z. The BMW Group Sound Design department teamed up with the Academy Award winner to create a few special sound effects for the iX—because you wouldn’t want an electric car to be totally silent, right? When you dial up Sport mode and hit the gas, the fizzing electric motors are accompanied by a soaring crescendo that’s part Dyson Airblade, part Tron. Had it been up to me, I might have gone for a Jack Sparrow “arrr” from Pirates of the Caribbean (Zimmer composed the scores for those movies, too). Sounds aside, this iX xDrive50 is an awesome addition to BMW’s growing fleet of all-electric newcomers. About the size of the popular X5 sport-ute, the iX distinguishes itself with its jaw-descending, head-

62

rotating, what-the-heck-were-they-thinking design. To call it bold is like saying Adele can carry a tune. However, it’s far from cute, with a multitude of lumps, bumps, and creases, as well as humongous kidneys on the nose and a full-diaper look at the rear end. That being said, when it comes to electric vehicles, looking different is key. You’re driving the future, so why not make the vehicle look like it’s from the future? The iX is nothing less than Ziggy Stardust on wheels. Two versions of this iX are on offer. The xDrive50 kicks off at $83,200, packs a 516-horsepower punch, and can run for up to 324 miles on a charge. Its crazy-fast brother is the iX M60, with a maximum hp of 610, 811 lb-ft of torque, 280 miles of range, and a $108,900-andup sticker. Let’s save the electric M60 Frankenbeemer for another day and revel in the equally eye-watering performance of the xDrive50. For those who have yet to experience the tingling delights of electric power, you’re in for a treat. The way this iX 50 catapults off the line, slingshots past dawdling traffic, and acts like a four-wheeled extra from Top Gun: Maverick is breathtaking. Zero to 60 in 4.4 seconds? That’ll do nicely.

Yes, the ride can get a little firm and fidgety. And while the frameless door windows look cool, they create a bit more wind noise than you might expect from a luxury SUV. But piloting this thing is a delight. Inside, the iX is as funky and futuristic as its exterior—just peep the hexagon-shaped wheel. VIKING SPIRIT

SWEDEN’S J CRAFT TORPEDO COMBINES ITALIAN STYLE WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY BY HOWARD WALKER

G

aze longingly at the gorgeous lines of this Swedish-built J Craft Torpedo cruiser, with its mirror-varnished mahogany and 1960s elegance, and the phrase “fit for a king” might come to mind. Actually, it is fit for a king. Back in 1999, His Royal Highness Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden, took delivery of the very first J Craft. He still owns it today and reportedly spends summer vacations cruising around the Mediterranean. Unashamedly inspired by that long-out-of-production icon of the ’60s, the Italian Riva Aquarama, the J Craft Torpedo is 42 feet of handcrafted style and sophistication, guaranteed to spin heads from the coast of Maine to the Côte d’Azur. And we’re actually on the Côte to try this modern classic in a run from Beaulieu-sur-Mer across to glitzy Monaco, courtesy of our friends at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. Rolls has had a long relationship with J Craft, perhaps because the two companies appeal to the same kind of fun-loving billionaires. Not so long ago, they partnered on a proposal for a matching Torpedo and Phantom drophead coupe, both with the same stealthy black paint,

64

creamy-yellow upholstery, and satin-metal detailing. The carmaker even created a stunning picnic box—complete with bespoke flatware—that could go from car to boat. Pass the Grey Poupon, please. And just like any Rolls-Royce, the J Craft is a labor of love for a passionate, dedicated workforce. It takes a small team of artisans more than 8,000 hours, or a full year, to build each Torpedo at J Craft’s factory on the rugged, windswept Swedish island of Gotland. Each cruiser is fashioned from sustainably sourced West African mahogany that’s formed by steam bending—in much the same way the Swedish Vikings built their longboats back in the day. But unlike those wooden longboats, the Torpedo uses vacuum-bagged vinylester and fiberglass for its deep-V hull. See the finished J Craft bobbing gently along the restaurant-filled Beaulieu-sur-Mer waterfront, and it’s nothing less than a piece of art. It’s just beautiful, from that glorious arched rear transom to the pinched stern that flows forward into a wide, curvy bow, not to mention the quartet of porthole-style engine vents at the back. Step aboard—shoes off, of course—and tread lightly across the

diamond-quilted sun pad, step down into the spacious cockpit, and soak in the detailing. Made by the Italian company Nardi, the leather-rimmed helm is a replica of the one used in Ferrari’s legendary ’60s sports cars. While the Torpedo may look like an open day boat designed for soaking up the Med sun, there’s actually a very roomy cabin for four beneath that striped teak-and-holly foredeck. It comes with air-conditioning, a head with a shower, and plenty of closet space. At the twist of a key, the Torpedo’s pair of Volvo Penta turbo diesels, hooked up POWER FILE to IPS 650 pod drives with forward-facing PRICE: FROM $1.5 MILLION props, burst into life. There’s a choice of LENGTH: 41 FEET, 4 INCHES four Volvo engines on offer, but our blueBEAM: 11 FEET, 9 INCHES hulled Torpedo RS has the most potent DRAFT: 3.12 FEET POWER: 2 X 480-HP VOLVO 480-hp versions, which can punch it to a IPS 650 TOP SPEED: 47 KNOTS top speed of 47 knots. WHY WE LOVE IT: BECAUSE ITS As we head out into the bay and pour LOOKS ALONE ARE ENOUGH on the power, the Torpedo rises easily and TO STIR YOUR SOUL. smoothly onto the plane, with only the dis-

tant muffled hum from the Volvos under the back deck. At 2,000 rpm, the speedo is showing 20 knots. At just 2,600 rpm, the boat is at its 30-knot cruising speed, where it’ll go for more than 280 nautical miles on a tank. It slices through the waves like its namesake torpedo. Flick over that lovely helm, and it leans easily and comfortably into a tight turn. At full power, 47 knots feel like nothing. J Craft is currently focusing on the U.S. market—the Torpedo was one of the stars of this year’s Palm Beach International Boat Show— but order one now and you’ll still wait more than a year. Maybe offering a king’s ransom, or having a word with King Gustaf himself, might get you higher up on the list. «

T

here may be a day, in the very near future, when all of us will know the names of the entire starting squad of Miami’s professional soccer club. That club is called Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami, or Inter Miami CF (IMCF) for short. The Herons are currently in their third season, and the plan is to become South Florida’s team. Forget your love-hate relationship with the Dolphins. Prepare to replace the Heat as your favorite crew to root for. You will—IMCF ownership hopes—someday bleed black and pink. If you, like many Americans, think soccer will always be a sport that just can’t catch on here, consider telling that to David Beckham. In case you haven’t heard, Beckham (who is arguably England’s most famous former professional footballer) is one of the owners of IMCF. Even though his team took almost a decade to get off the ground and despite a couple lackluster first years, Beckham and the IMCF squad he has assembled have a united front of optimism. This will be the year, they say. Soccer has arrived, they promise. Could it finally be true? “We are committed to developing talent here in South Florida and that remains a key focus for us,” Beckham said via email. The potential for IMCF, of course, is limitless—which has also been true throughout the entire history of soccer here in South Florida. Pro soccer arrived in town in 1973, when the Washington Darts relocated here and became first the Gatos and then later the Toros. Even landing in the championship game in 1974

TO BE ABLE TO BRING PROFESSIONAL SOCCER TO A COMMUNITY THAT HAS GIVEN SO MUCH TO ME IS A DREAM COME TRUE.”

couldn’t bring fans to Toros games. Things looked better after a move to Fort Lauderdale, where the team became the Strikers and started to fill Lockhart Stadium. The first Strikers team ended up relocating to Minnesota (of all places), later replaced by a new version of the Strikers that didn’t have the same draw as the original. Major League Soccer arrived in 1998 with the Miami Fusion, under the assumption that the metro’s large Latin population would fill the seats. Like the someday-soon renewable energy the team was named after, the Fusion never seemed to catch on, and the team folded after its 2001 season. A new team called Miami FC sprung up in 2006 and also moved to Fort Lauderdale to become a third version of the Strikers. Despite a loyal following and success in the North American Soccer League, the team faded away in 2016. At the same time as the third iteration of the Strikers was fizzling out, Beckham began trying to bring the MLS back to Miami. After he retired from professional soccer in 2013, Beckham started a back-and-forth negotiation with Miami-Dade to build a stadium. Beckham’s personal star power notwithstanding, the MLS took five years to approve his plan for his own franchise. He’s still waiting for his Miami stadium. Miami Freedom Park remains under construction, a $1 billion project that’ll seat 25,000 fans out by the airport when it opens in 2025. 70

Meanwhile, the team has begun its third season in Fort Lauderdale, where the stadium is now called DRV PNK Stadium and includes a training center and seven additional fields for the team and Fort Lauderdale CF, the team’s practice squad. Fort Lauderdale’s stadium is also home to IMCF Academy, a youth training program that funds six teams across age groups from U12 through U17. Academy players train and work their way through the ranks toward the MLS, similar to the way in which European soccer clubs groom young talent. The Herons’ 2022 season started off rocky. The team’s first game— at home, against Chicago—ended in a zero-zero draw. By July, the team had won just six out of 17 games, putting it in ninth place out of 14 teams in the MLS. But the team announced a major trade when the Herons cut a $150,000 check to Toronto FC and received Landon Donovan, the league’s MVP. Afterward, trade publication Soccer America said that “one of the most poorly constructed teams” finally had gained momentum.

8/3/22 10:40 AM

In his email, Beckham had a lot of optimism for the team’s future: “I cannot wait to bring a new stadium to Miami for our fans to enjoy—Miami Freedom Park will be one of the best soccer stadiums in North America and will rival the greatest in global football.” Beckham’s partner in IMCF is billionaire Jorge Mas, the largest shareholder of MasTec, the construction and engineering company founded by his father. By email, Mas said the soccer team is a culmination of what his family has been working toward for all these years. “When my parents left Cuba fleeing tyranny, South Florida welcomed them with open arms,” Mas wrote. “It is our home, the place where my brothers and I were born. The place where I received an education, got married, and raised my family. To be able to bring professional soccer to a community that has given so much to me is a dream come true.” Along with the new stadium and the Herons competing in their third season, Miami will also host the World Cup in 2026. Mas promises that “South Florida will further emerge as the soccer epicenter of the United States.” It’s quite possible that South Florida will finally get behind a soccer team, according to CBS Sports’ Andres Cordero. Born in Cuba, Cordero has been in Miami since he was 8 years old, and he’s worked as a soccer commentator here since 2003. “I’ve grown up with Miami

soccer culture before there was an MLS team,” Cordero says. “Finally getting a professional team was a big deal for me personally.” This third year for IMCF looks to be the best of them, Cordero adds. There’s a consistent core of around 12,000 fans—known as La Familia—who come to every game and have stuck with the Herons since the beginning. A few of them even travel to away games. Cordero remembers one game during the pandemic lockdown when fans weren’t allowed in the stadium, and yet hundreds of them showed up, in the rain, to cheer from the parking lot. Cordero admits that people have been saying for decades now that soccer will be big here, but he believes this could finally be the day: “Miami has been really hungry for soccer for a long time.” Is it now, then, that soccer will become a thing in South Florida? Perhaps for soccer it’ll always be tomorrow. Or perhaps tomorrow has finally arrived.

Q&A LEARNING TO GET BACK UP

THE COACH OF MIAMI’S PRO SOCCER TEAM SAYS THE KEY TO SURVIVING TOUGH TIMES IS TO “STAY TRUE TO WHO YOU ARE”

ON THE MARK Mas and Beckham turned to designer Kimou Meyer at Doubleday & Cartwright to create the team’s visual identity. “I knew that creatively he would come up with something different,” Beckham explains in a team video. Meyer studied Miami’s architecture to make IMCF stand out in style. The Mascot: Chosen for its loyalty to South Florida (it does not migrate) and its quick strike when hunting prey, the Great White Heron was an obvious mascot for the team. The Crest: The crest’s central image depicts a pair of herons, their legs intertwined to form an Old World–style monogrammed “M,” while an eclipse of the sun floats between their heads. The Colors: Representing Miami sunrises, pink was a front-runner from the get-go. “If there’s one city in the world that can own pink,” Meyer says, “it’s Miami.” Black was the obvious counterpoint. the motto: “Libertad, Unidad, Fortuna” pays tribute to freedom, unity, solidarity, inclusiveness, opportunity, and good fortune for all. —Kristen Desmond LeFevre 72

Inter Miami CF brought in Phil Neville to coach the team before the 2021 season, hoping Beckham’s former teammate at the storied Manchester United could help bring early success to the second-year franchise. But while the team won just 17 of its 34 matches in the MLS that year, Neville says what he learned from his time as a player—in success but especially in failure—helped him navigate those rough waters. AVM: As a player for Manchester United and Everton, you helped win the Premier League six times. How has that experience helped you as a coach? Neville: People all the time want to talk about the great things—the trophies, the medals, the cups. But I really think the down moments were equally as powerful. The down moments were [when] I learned more about myself and probably more about situations you find yourselves in as a coach, how you deal with players, how you deal with certain situations. You’re not taught how to deal with a player who’s lost a family member, or a player who’s got a mental illness. I’ve coached people with disabilities, women, girls, boys, men. So, I’ve gained a lot of experience in my short life, so far, that [has] taught me how to be a coach. Is there one of those difficult moments that you really learned from? There were a couple moments that took me to places that really tested me, mentally. Talking about coaching, a

lot of it is mental, about having consistency. As a player, there were two or three incidents. The biggest one was when I was 19 or 20, in 1997. In England, we have a tradition of playing on December 26. We drove down to Nottingham on Christmas night, and I started to have flu-like symptoms—cough, cold, shivers. The next morning, I couldn’t physically get out of bed. I couldn’t play in the game, and I ended up having a virus called glandular fever, which saps all your energy and your muscle strength. I was 11-stone-10 [164 pounds], and I went to 11-stone-two [156 pounds] in the space of three weeks. My career was in doubt. It was going to take a lot of rehabilitation when I came back. I was a first-team player for England, and for the next 12 months—I look back at pictures—I was literally just a shadow of myself. It took me three years to get back up to 11-stone-10. My career flashed before me, and that was quite a scary experience. You had a tough first year in Miami. Did it give you the perspective to say, “Okay, let’s go at it again next year?” The challenges that I’ve had in my playing career help build durability. And durability means that in life you know you’re going to get up-and-down

moments. And in the down moments, you’ve got to stay true to who you are, stay true to the values and culture you want. And that’s what happened last year. I started with a certain way of working, a certain way of coaching, a certain way of behaving. The darkest moments are when you’re going to be tested, and that’s a challenge for any person. When the going gets tough is when you see the true characteristics and personality of the person. You’ve talked about wanting to build a young team. How is it coming together? I think that’s going to be one of the foundations of this football club, to produce our own players. That’s something that David [Beckham] in particular is so passionate about. We’ve already given opportunities to some of our Academy players, which was a great boost for our academy, that they know that the work that they’re doing is being rewarded. We’ve got a great group of young players who will need time and patience, but they’re going to get an opportunity because there’s a pathway for success. They have a fearlessness about themselves, and I relate to back when I was young and somebody had to give me an opportunity. And now I’m in a position

where we can produce some players and give them opportunities in the MLS. Outside of sport, what does your life in South Florida look like these days? I live in Fort Lauderdale. When I first got to town, I lived...in an apartment on Las Olas, and I think Las Olas is a vibrant, exciting, interesting place. When I want to switch off from football, I go down there with my wife and the children sometimes. —E. B.

JOIN THE CLUB There are fans, and then there are super fans. For IMCF supporters who fall into the latter category, there’s La Familia, the collective body that cheers from the north stands on match days at DRV PNK Stadium. Amid plumes of pink smoke, flying streamers, waving banners, trumpet fanfares, drumbeats, and chants, three distinct groups—Vice City (hailing as the “hardcore” faction with Latin American flair and traditions), Southern Legion (known as the first and original group), and The Siege (billed as ultra-inclusive and community-minded)—come together to bring the passion, noise, and fun as they cheer on IMCF and create a next-level fan experience in the process. —K.D.L. Jean Mota bolsters IMCF’s roster following a nearly 10-year-long career in Brazil and other prestigious South American club competitions. Mota is already setting lofty ambitions for his time in South Florida and is looking forward to achieving great things with IMCF. “Inter Miami is a big club, and it’s a team that deserves to be in the playoffs, going for the trophy,” he says. “On the field, I’m a player [who] gives it all. I think about the whole team and not just myself. I’m a professional, always looking for the best for the club. A lot of people don’t know me yet, but I’ll be working to showcase everything I have built in my career so far. I’ve had great moments, and I’m looking forward to creating more great ones in an Inter Miami jersey.”

Player: Nick Marsman Age: 31 Hometown: Zwolle, Netherlands Number: 21 Position: Goalkeeper

Yedlin made his debut for IMCF in the 2022 season opener, and has since gone on to play more than 900 minutes and record three assists, one of which set up the game-winning goal against the Seattle Sounders. Yedlin also captained IMCF twice, including a match against Atlanta United FC, leading by example and setting up the first goal in a 2-1 victory. “I want to win everything with the club. If that’s not your goal as a player then you’re not in it for the right reasons,” Yedlin says. “This club [has] international attention, so it’s important that the club wins and consistently does well. That’s what I want to help this club achieve. I want to win championships, I want to win U.S. Open Cups, I want to win Champions Leagues. That’s the main focus: to win, to keep improving, to help the younger guys, and to keep pushing forward.” 74

The Dutch goalkeeper joined IMCF in July following two years with Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Eredivisie, the first division in the Netherlands. Marsman also gained valuable experience by competing in the UEFA Europa League during his time plying his trade in his home country. “The team has a whole plan to grow, a lot of ambition,” he says. “I just feel like I want to be a part of this, a part of this project.” IMCF’s front office is thrilled to have Marsman on the team roster. “We are pleased to welcome Nick to Inter Miami,” says Chris Henderson, IMCF’s chief soccer officer and sporting director. “He brings a wealth of qualities, both in and out of possession, which will impact and complement our style of play.”

PLAY ON Signed to the team in March, Allen is the first IMCF Academy alumnus to start an MLS match and just the second to feature for the First Team. The moment he stepped onto the field in IMCF colors for the first time is one he says will stick with him. “I know Coach Phil [Neville] said that I didn’t look that nervous, but I definitely was nervous,” Allen says. “It was just a beautiful moment, walking out, and when I looked over to La Familia, it was crazy. It was like a swarm of people; I couldn’t really grasp that moment, but it was just beautiful. Obviously, the standing ovation going off was another beautiful moment that I’ll never forget.” As a member of the club’s inaugural Academy class, Allen has been with IMCF from the very beginning, but his support for the club even predates its official start. “[Signing for this club] means everything. It’s been a dream of mine and my parents since we first saw on the news, ‘David Beckham bringing a professional MLS team to Miami’ years and years ago. I remember waiting so long for this club to be built and the Academy to be brought up. I remember the invitation to join the Academy, so it’s just a dream come true.” —K.D.L.

WHERE DOES THE HOME TEAM CALL HOME?

Miami: Freedom Park Approved by the Miami City Commission in April, IMCF will move to Miami Freedom Park for the 2025 MLS season. The airport-area complex (which currently contains Melreese golf course) will include a new state-of-the-art stadium that will seat 25,000 fans, surrounded by 58 acres of public parks and green space, a tech hub, restaurants, shops, community sports fields, and more. “[It’s] an amazing day for the voters of our city, for the fans of football in Inter Miami,” Mas said in a press conference after the approval was confirmed. “I always knew that this would happen, because I believe in our city and I believe in dreaming. And today a dream commences.” Fort Lauderdale: DRV PINK Stadium IMCF plays and trains at its 34-acre facility—including the 19,100-seat DRV Above: The team’s Fort LauPNK Stadium, a derdale training facility; inset: DRV PNK Stadium. 50,000-square-foot training center, and seven fields in Fort Lauderdale. n an industrial park in West Miami, Andrea Gellatly is resurrecting Witch Doctor’s robot. After its sixth season of combat on Discovery’s BattleBots, the 250-pound beast is in need of a little love. For starters, its armor rib cage is bent and there’s a gash in the front from a competitor’s rotating saw. Nearby, Gellatly’s husband and co-captain, Mike, is working with a teammate on motors. Across the workshop is Will Bales from Team Hypershock. He’s got work to do on his own robot, a highlighter-yellow and pink monster that screams “Made in the 305.” “Especially down here in South Florida, we all grew up at the same time and we’ve been fighting robots together forever,” Gellatly says. The nuts and bolts of each team’s origin story include high school robotics and stints at Starbot, a now-closed maker space. Of the three nationally known BattleBots teams who call Miami home— Witch Doctor, HyperShock and Rotator—all of their team captains work in the biomedical industry. But while their work is focused on keeping people alive, in the Battle Box (the arena where the bots duke it out), it’s all about destruction.

The weeks before competition are a dash to secure sponsors, order materials, design a deadly robot, and pack it all up to be shipped to California. As they arive on set, teams can check out their competitors’ robots and make adjustments to their own (as long as they pass the weigh-in and functional tests). With match-ups set, it all comes down to three minutes of adrenaline. Drivers clutch a large remote controller, maneuvering their robots through rotating saws, flames, and other hazards. All the while, the crowd—shielded by custom bulletproof walls—is chanting, screaming, and waving signs in the air. Everyone is vying for The Giant Nut trophy and a cash payout. But in between matches, it’s the norm to see teams loaning tools to one another—or in Team Witch Doctor’s case, being invited into a local team’s workshop to weld a broken piece. “Everybody enjoys each other’s company,” says Trey Roski, CEO and founder of BattleBots. “They’re in competition, but they’ll loan anything they need to get ready, even to fight them in the next fight. Even if they lose a fight, they didn’t lose if they put on a good show. They put on their best, they know what’s wrong, and they figure out how to fix it.” Turn the page to meet the teams.(battlebots.com) SEPTEMBER 2022

Victor Soto, captain of Team Rotator, was introduced to the world of robotics while in high school at Miami’s Belen Jesuit Preparatory School. When he saw his sister partaking, he knew he had to join. “I was always drawing or painting things, and that kind of converted into drawing robots and what would be cool inventions,” he recalls. “I think the whole thing about robotics is making something that you bring to life yourself.” Soto managed to merge his hobby of combat robotics with his work in biomechanical engineering when he proposed it as a team-building activity. Now, his team—clad in black and gold with bling—consists of his coworkers. His original design for Rotator was inspired by his childhood robot known as Blue Flame, which used two rotating saws to inflict maximum damage on an opponent. Two was eventually pared down to one, and Rotator is now a feared competitor on BattleBot’s heavyweight circuit. 78

In a fight against the infamous Tombstone, which is known for its heavy hits, the team switched their strategy to use its armor against it. By slamming into the bulky robot, Team Rotator was able to make Tombstone break itself and win by knockout. Matches like these (where there’s more destruction) is more fun for the team, Soto says of the mad dash to diagnose and fix a robot before the next match. But once the bell rings, the world around Soto disappears. “When the match starts, I focus on the robot,” he says. “I actually block out everything around me, and I focus on just what’s happening in the arena. TEAM WITCH DOCTOR Andrea Gellatly might be Witch Doctor’s co-captain, but she’s adamant that each of the eight people she works alongside are equally critical parts of the whole. “You need a team where everybody knows what to do, when to do it, and how to diagnose and repair issues,” she explains. “We really have to prepare for anything, and we have different configurations and armor and weapons that we can put on our robot depending on who we’re fighting.” Gellatly has been working on combat robots since she was 14 years old. In fact, she specifically attended Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart—an all-girls Catholic school in Coconut Grove where she was surrounded by fellow women engineers—for its robotics program. When she went on to appear on BattleBots, she was surprised by the attention she got as a woman in STEM. “All of a sudden there was all this attention on me because I was one of less than a handful of female

team captains at the time,” she says. Gellatly has used her position to be a role model. Not only does she run the nonprofit MakeMIA Makerspace for kids 5 and older, she published the book B is for BattleBots. These young fans were also the inspiration behind the team’s bold look; Team Witch Doctor wears wacky top hats, skeleton tees, and purple and green accents reminiscent of Mardi Gras. TEAM HYPERSHOCK Just as you would expect from a group of engineers, this team’s name was devised from an Excel spreadsheet. They wanted something that people could chant in three syllables, so they worked in columns of prefixes and suffixes, scored combinations from best to worst, and landed on HyperShock. There’s strategy behind their colors, too: The team wanted to “make life hell for the camera crew” and decided on neon pink and yellow. “We said, ‘Let’s find the brightest, most obnoxious, retina-searing yellow,’” recalls team captain Will Bales. “And in [a] moment of great satisfaction, we did a tunnel entrance, and they had us redo it because the white balance was blown out.” Even with all this planning, Bales says Team HyperShock is notorious for leaving all its building to the last minute. In fact, they’re one of the only teams that doesn’t ship their robot to California completely finished. Instead, they’re working on-site, screwing in pieces and 80

Even though they’re building alongside their competitors, they have very different ideas of how to make a winning robot. HyperShock, for example, is one of the fastest out there, which can be difficult when working in such a small space. They also secure different sponsors, leading to

their use of different parts and materials. Bales’ father introduced him to robotics in elementary school, and by the time he was attending Ransom Everglades School, he was learning more tinkering at home than he was at school. He grew up watching the original iteration of BattleBots and collecting the toys from fast food restaurants. Today, he’s a medical device engineer, the same field as his fellow Miami combat robot builders. And no, this is not his full-time job. “Everyone assumes that, and I correct them right away. I say, ‘Not a chance.’ This is a money-spending endeavor, not a money-making endeavor.” Bales laughs. “This is a passion project first and foremost. So, if it stops being fun, people stop. It hasn’t stopped being fun.” (hypershock.tv)

In May, Ransom Everglades School in Miami joined more than 3,000 international teams in Dallas for the VEX Robotics World Championship (vexrobotics.com). Scurrying around the pit, they congregated with peers from Mexico, Colombia, Ireland, Singapore, and dozens of other countries, working with a snap-together robotics system by VEX to duke it out in the battle ring. By the end of the nine-day competition, the team walked away in sixteenth place within their division of 80 teams. Their peers at NSU University School in Fort Lauderdale placed second in the VRC High School World Finalists. “It is one of the warmest, more positive, enthusiastic environments I’ve ever been in,” says Robert DuBard, who’s served as Ransom Everglades School’s robotics coach for 15 years. At first, DuBard was apprehensive about the sport, but after a “transformative” teaching workshop, he began describing it as “stealth learning,” a term he picked up from a fellow robotics teacher. In their quest to build the best robot, students are applying battery technology, material science, machine design, 3D modeling, engineering, and more. And if DuBard had any residual doubt, it was extinguished at his first competition at the University of Miami when he saw his students’ robot break. “The students turned to me and said, ‘We got this, Mr. DuBard,’ and they turned around and every bit of learning that they’d done over the weeks and months of planning and designing this thing, it was on display,” he remembers. “In an instant they put everything they learned together.” (ransomeverglades.org) « SEPTEMBER 2022

hat is it about orchids? Their alien-like shapes? Their deep, bold colors? Their vast varieties? It could be as simple as “their brightly colored, intricate patterns” or as complex as “how challenging they can be to grow,” explains Jason L. Downing, an orchid biologist at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables. “Orchids are like living jewels representing the most beautiful and exotic aspects of nature.” Orchid fancying has been around for almost as long as humankind, dating back to Aristotle and Confucius. But South Florida has its own rich orchid history, too, with 50 of the 200 native orchid species in the United States located in MiamiDade and Collier counties, Downing says. “In Miami, orchids can be used in home gardens, on trees, and in landscapes.” (You can thank our relative lack of winter for that.) Then there’s the cultural connection. “Miami is a diverse city, and orchids play a prominent role in Latin and Caribbean cultures,” Downing adds. “With many of our garden visitors and members coming from tropical countries, I often find myself SEPTEMBER 2022

hearing orchid stories and seeing photos of someone’s abuela and her orchid collection in their backyard. So many people are already aware of orchids—another reason people have stronger connections to these plants in Miami.” But orchid fancying has a dark side, too—a long history of orchid poaching, which expanded to a lucrative black market, films, and books. “This further romanticized the orchid in American culture,” Downing says. “Many of the current orchid conservation actions in the region, such as Fairchild’s Million Orchid Project—the nation’s largest educational outreach program dedicated to orchid conservation—are addressing the impacts of this extreme poaching.” One South Floridian battling that darker side is Hong Liu, a professor of earth and environment at Florida

THE MILLION ORCHID PROJECT

Imagine one million orchids, flowering across Miami. It’s happening, as the largest orchid educational outreach program in the United States is located right in our own backyard. The Million Orchid Project,

headed by Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden orchid biologist Jason L. Downing, is dedicated to conserving rare orchids in the face of threats by the black market, deforestation, and lack of regulations. Its goal is to propagate hundreds of thousands of native orchids and plant them in urban landscapes to re-establish one million plants regionally. South Florida has long been a habitat for orchids. But, during the late 1800s, the Florida East Coast Railroad extension south led to orchids being one of the first exploited natural resources in the state. Those beautiful flowers attached to trees were ripped off, thrown into boxcars, and shipped off to flower shops as fodder for vases. It was here that the devastation began, and Florida’s lush orchid population began to disappear. But what was lost can be built again. Just as the Million Orchid Project has revitalized orchids in public spaces, it has also brought a more diverse orchid population to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. “Based on the enthusiasm of the Million Orchid Project and major infrastructure changes to our rainforest exhibit, we have a renewed focus on orchids at Fairchild,” Downing says. “Since 2018 over 40,000 orchids have been added to the garden collections and over 300 species/varieties.” The Million Orchid Project is also helping the cigar orchid find its way back, too. “The cigar orchid is considered endangered in Florida,” Downing says. “It has been successfully re-established within several canopies in urban Miami through the Million Orchid Project.” (fairchild garden.org/science-and-education/ science/million-orchid-project) SEPTEMBER 2022

International University (FIU). Liu has worked to fight orchid extinction in Southern China, uncovering a highly illegal and widespread wild orchid trade. For a year, Liu’s team monitored physical markets in the region, finding more than 1.2 million wild orchids from around 440 species on display—many plucked from places they should not have been poached from. “Vendors openly told us they heard from the people who collected the orchids in the wild that they had to travel farther than before and that they also couldn’t collect the orchids in the places that they used to, because they didn’t grow there anymore,” Liu says. With this fuel igniting her flame, Liu began to take action in South Florida. Armed with an $80,000 grant from the U.S. National Park Service, Liu and a team of volunteers are endeavoring to save the cigar orchid. Also known as the bee swarm orchid, Cowhorn orchid, or cyrtopodium punctatum, the cigar orchid is native to Florida and one of the largest and most dramatic orchids in the United States. “A mass of pseudobulbs can grow up to 1.5 meters across, and an individual inflorescence can produce more than 500 flowers,” Downing says. “Populations were once common in the greater Miami area, found in hardwood hammocks and open swamps.” That’s not always the case now, thanks to serious poaching from orchid fanciers and hunters, plus habitat destruction.

COURTESY FIU

Hong Liu, a professor at FIU, and her team wade deep into Big Cypress National Preserve in search of cigar orchids to catalogue and study. It can take four hours to reach the most remote locations.

“This orchid is rare now, due to past unregulated collection (prior to the establishment of the national park and preserves in Southern Florida) and logging in the 1940s,” Liu says. Habitat destruction and overharvesting all contributed to the cigar orchids’ endangered status. Working in Big Cypress National Preserve, Liu and her team assessed a baseline on the population, size, and status of South Florida’s remaining cigar orchids. “The cigar orchid is one of the rarest plants in South Florida,” Liu says. “It is also the largest and most spectacular epiphytic plant in our region.” And because of that, she and her team are committed to keeping it in existence. “If we see one plant, that’s a good day. The majority of the searches, we see one or two; that’s the norm. That’s how sparse this population is over the huge size of Big Cypress.” With her researching wrapping up in May, Liu remains mum about the number of cigar orchids she and her team accounted for, stating she will release the data once she turns her final report in to the National Park Service. From there the next steps, including restoration measures, will be determined As for why Liu thinks people are drawn to orchids, she says, “Orchids are very diverse and many are beautiful.” They are a breathtaking sight that Liu says never fails to make her smile.

Drew Mullin’s expertise in orchids started by accident. However, it’s led him to a position as Miami Beach Botanical Garden’s orchid specialist. “Initially, I had no real interest in orchids,” Mullin says of his early employment at the American Orchid Society in Delray Beach. Like so many before him, however, he found himself sucked into the fascinating world of orchids. “I began to learn neat facts about orchids, especially pertaining to unique methods of pollination, which Darwin wrote an entire book on, and began to slowly become fascinated by them.” Today, in addition to sourcing unique orchid species that the average garden attendee has not seen and installing them across Miami Beach Botanical Garden, Mullin is also focusing on Orchids Florida, a project for those with a not-so-green-thumb who admire orchids but would rather not take matters into their own hands. “Our company visits private and public residences and assesses which orchid genera and species would do best in the given area,” Mullin says. “Then we bring carefully customized orchids to the property monthly and mount them on trees, adding an incredibly new aesthetic and layer to the given property. A maintenance package of water and fertilizer is performed weekly, as well as pest and fungus management to ensure the healthiest of orchids to your new property.” 88

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR AN AT-HOME ORCHID COLLECTION

If you admire the beauty of these plants but fall into the inadvertent orchid killer category, consider letting a professional like Mullin handle the work—or follow his basic tips below. 1. Keep it simple. Mullin says the easiest and most cultivated native orchid is Encyclia tampensis, a species that “thrives on neglect.” 2. Look for the light. “For home growing, the brightest light right before the plant burns is the best possible scenario for orchids to thrive in, and for flower initiation.” 3. Try attaching orchids to your trees. “There are very few trees that orchids do not thrive on. In the Everglades, most orchids prefer Pop Ash, Pond Apple, and Cypress trees.”

Hunt for orchids in the wild right here in South Florida

“Florida has the largest number of orchid species in North America, with the greatest number in Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve, in the central Everglades region,” says Drew Mullin, Miami Beach Botanical Garden’s orchid specialist. And if you’re into orchids and you’re local, you’re in luck. “Miami-Dade County has a good amount of native terrestrial species [meaning they growing on the ground],” Mullin adds. Here’s what to look for. However, many wild orchids are rare or endangered and collecting them in the wild is strictly forbidden (and can land you in jail or with a hefty fine). Instead, capture them with a camera or in your mind’s eye.

COURTESY DREW MULLEN

Bletia purpurea is both pink and pretty. It inhabits some of the pineland areas of Dade County. Calopogon tuberosus is another pink species found in Dade County’s pine scrub forests. Epidendrum nocturnum is an epiphytic species (meaning it grows on trees), with showy, mostly white flowers. It can be found in hammocks and swamps across South Florida. Mullin’s greatest find to date is a very rare terrestrial orchid called Eltroplectris calcarata. “This plant was mostly relegated to the Southern Everglades,” Mullin explains. “This find expanded its range, and this population was over 200 plants.”

LOCAL LOVE FIND YOUR FOOTING IN MIAMI’S ORCHID FANCYING COMMUNITY If you’re looking to learn more about orchids, then visit one of the many shows and sales in Florida. “These shows have hundreds of vendors with great prices and hard-to-get orchids,” Mullin advises. Some of the area’s biggest shows include: MARCH Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens “Orchids in Bloom” Show (fairchildgarden.org) APRIL Flamingo Gardens Show (flamingogardens.org) MAY Tamiami Orchid Festival (tamiamiorchidfestival.com) OCTOBER East Everglades Orchid Society’s “Fall in Love with Orchids” Show and Sale (orchidseeos.com) Redland International Orchid Festival (redlandfruitandspice.com)

Want to learn more from other orchid fanciers? Mullin suggests attending a meeting of one of the many local orchid clubs. “There are various orchid societies through [the] American Orchid Society across the nation that have shows and talks,” he advises. Here are a few Miami-Dade area groups to try: • Coral Gables: American Orchid Society (aos.org) • Davie: Flamingo Gardens Orchid Society (flamingogardensorchid society.com) • Miami: South Florida Orchid Society (sforchid.com) • Plantation: Plantation Orchid Society (plantationorchidsociety.org) «

Haute DEBUT In the heart of Edgewater, next-level landand-sea concept Klaw is trending as the city’s hottest table. Occupying the top three floors of the reinvented circa-1926 Miami Woman’s Club building, Klaw gives a masterclass in multisensory restaurant perfection. The Martin Brudnizki–designed space captures mid-century modern redux through exquisite interiors, while allowing Miami’s coastal beauty to shine vis-à-vis assemblies of arched windows overlooking Biscayne Bay. The pinnacles of Klaw’s land-and-sea delights—colossal live king crab from Norway’s Barents Sea and prime cuts of USDA Black Angus Nebraskan beef—are also woven into design through gold-framed fish

Caviar-crowned oysters, sustainably sourced bluefin tuna, and heritage beef (including some stemming from Florida’s original herd circa 1551) further advance a menu rooted in hard-to-find global delicacies. SIP&SAVOR Q&A

Love at First SIP Singer and songwriter Kylie Minogue is international pop royalty, with a successful career that spans 35 years and 80 million records sold worldwide. Recently, the chart-topping sensation expanded her talents from making music to making wine, launching a distinguished-yet-approachable line of rosés that reflect her discerning palate, bubbly personality, and personal love for all things pink. On the heels of becoming the No. 1 rosé brand in the United Kingdom, Kylie Minogue Wines crossed the pond by way of Miami and New York in June. Aventura Magazine sat and sipped with the superstar during her U.S. wine launch at the Goodtime Hotel in South Beach, learning about her new venture and scoring a first taste of the buzzworthy rosés. (kylieminoguewines.com) —P.R.

By popular demand, Kylie Minogue’s chart-topping rosés arrived at last in the U.S. this summer, with a lavish launch party and tasting at South Beach’s Goodtime Hotel. Below: Interviewer Paul Rubio hangs with Minogue.

AVM: What inspired you to get into the wine business? Minogue: It all started with a glass of rosé on a rooftop in Nashville. It was the peak of summer 2017, and I had just finished a long day of working on my album, Golden. I was really enjoying this glass of rosé, marveling at its taste and color and simply thought, “I’d love to have my own rosé one day.” Three years later, kismet brought wine expert Paul Schaafsma [from Benchmark Drinks] into my life, and we were able to make magic happen. If I understand the timing right, you developed your wines during lockdown. How were you able to do this? Paul and I started working on the wines in March 2020, just before the world closed. During lockdown, I received deliveries daily of everything required to create my wines—from varietal samples to every detail that goes into labeling and packaging. We did all we could. My entire place transformed into a series of display rooms as I assessed my options and worked out exactly what I was looking for. When restrictions eased, I was able to visit my partner vineyards in France and Italy. Your Signature Rosé and Rosé Prosecco are both best-sellers in the U.K. How does success in the wine world compare to that of the music industry? They both feel amazing. Different victories but equally great.

112

Can we please match your songs to the moods of your wines? Personally, I imagine myself listening to “Slow” on my AirPods while sipping your Côtes de Provence Rosé around a pool surrounded by gorgeous people (similar to the “Slow” music video). I love this question! Definitely “Slow” for the Côtes de Provence Rosé. For the Prosecco, I’d say, “Love at First Sight” for the fun, energy, and lightness of both the bubbles and the song—and the wine’s bright pink beauty. For the signature Rosé, I’m feeling “All the Lovers”— something fresh, smooth, and balanced. When you’re not drinking rosé, what can we find you with in hand? You’ll typically find me sipping rosé, but I do absolutely love a good pisco sour. How did we end up here in South Beach “On a Night Like This?” I had been wanting to get my wines over to the U.S., and we found the right distributors down here and in New York. I thought it would be great to launch during Pride Month in Miami and the Goodtime Hotel (thegoodtimehotel.com) was the perfect pretty-in-pink setting. So, we set up a Kylie Disco Party to make our debut official. What’s next for you—more music or more wine? Can we expect to see you again in Miami soon, perhaps on tour? New music is on the way, plus a tour. I’ve wrapped up promotion on my latest album, Disco, but won’t tour until the next album. After the fun I’ve had on this trip, I think I have to come back to Miami on tour. I promise, that’s not the wine talking.

STARSTRUCK In the new Florida Michelin Guide, Miami received 11 Michelin stars, solidifying the city’s status as an official foodie destination. In its inaugural Florida guide, Michelin (long revered as the world’s foremost culinary authority) doled out 15 stars statewide. So where can you see stars of the Michelin variety in the Magic City? L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon in the Design District was the sole restaurant to receive two stars. Within a design-forward, dimly lit space, chef de cuisine James Friedberg and culinary director Alain Verzeroli perfect the art and taste of modern French cuisine over dishes like la betterave (a creamy beet, apple, and avocado tartare topped with green mustard sorbet) and la canette (spiced duck with poached pear). The 10 Miami restaurants to receive one star were: Ariete, Boia De, Cote Miami, The Den at Sushi Azabu Miami, El Cielo Miami, Hiden, Le Jardinier, Los Félix, Stubborn Seed, and The Surf Club Restaurant by Thomas Keller. Three restaurants in Orlando were also granted one star apiece, while a total of 29 restaurants across Miami, Orlando, and Tampa received a Bib Gourmand designation, which recognizes places serving noteworthy cuisine at an affordable price point. DRESSED SUSHI PLATTER Even though you aren’t going for the omakase, you should not skip the sushi. Curated platters (think: Hokkaido scallop with chili confit, SakuraMasu cherry trout with sweet miso and pickled ginger, and torched Wagyu) are delivered with instructions to proceed from one combo to the next in sequence for maximum taste effect.

ICE CREAM SANDWICHES In a suite of complementary flavors—chocolate black sesame, strawberry, and pistachio white chocolate—this decadent dessert trio takes a frozen childhood favorite to new levels of glammy goodness. Together, they hit all the ultimate meal-ending notes, from salty to sweet to savory.

The world famous concept is finally here in Miami. Call or visit us online to reserve your table.

PARADOXICAL PLAY

COURTESY OF PARADOX MUSEUM MIAMI

A paradox is a self-contradictory statement or proposition that may prove true when explained or investigated. Experience the phenomenon for yourself in exhibits featuring 70 mind-twisting, eye-tricking interactive deceptions at the new Paradox Museum Miami. This marks Wynwood’s first photo-worthy “edutainment” venue that invites guests to “write their own Paradox story” via a collection of immersive installations based in tenets of math, science, and psychology. The Paradox Tunnel, for example, forces participants to let themselves go as they balance their bodies in a trippy scenario of perceived movement. (paradoxmuseummiami.com) —Melissa Puppo

Gynecologic surgery with

NO VISIBLE SCARS. Jackson Health System’s world-class surgeons have a new, state-of-the-art tool. A surgical robot that is the smallest, farthest-reaching of its kind, designed to significantly help with minimally invasive transvaginal procedures, including hysterectomies, ovarian cyst removals, tubal ligations, and more. For patients, that may result in less pain, less chance of infection, less time recovering, and less scarring. In fact, no visible scars. It’s the latest advancement in benign gynecologic procedures. And we’re one of the first to bring this technology to you.

To consult with an expert physician regarding this new approach, call 786-796-0982. Visit JacksonHealth.org/GynoSurgery for more information.
