CAPEHART

A community as dynamic as Aventura and greater Miami is full of power players, impacting every industry from philanthropy to technology and everything in between. It’s hard not to notice that many of these dynamos come in pairs, making waves that are twice as powerful. This month, we feature several duos who are changing the game in South Florida. Our cover subjects, meteorologist Sam Champion and his husband, artist Rubem Robierb, are partners in every way, from supporting each other personally and professionally, to advocating for the LGBTQ community and equal marriage through organizations around the country. Seeing their interaction, it’s obvious that they’re “Better Together.” Turn to page 60 to learn more about their love story and their passion projects. Fashion designer Silvia Tcherassi has made a name for herself both here and in her native Colombia, but her business exploded when she formed a creative partnership with her daughter, Sofia Espinosa Tcherassi. In this issue, fashion editor Katherine Lande has a candid conversation with the mother-daughter duo about creative influences, South Florida style, and what it’s like to work together in this exciting and ever-changing industry. Meet Sofia and Silvia, and take a peek inside Silvia’s chic Miami home, in “Some Like it Haute” on page 64. We also introduce you to three power couples in “The Power of 2” (page 54), featuring Elena and Grant Cardone, Amira and Wale Ogunleye, and Sam and Emina Nazarian. Each of their stories is inspiring and affirms the fact that through love and perseverance, anything is possible. Wishing you the very best in 2022!

SUGAR RUSH

There’s a new world of candycoated fun to explore. Miami Sweet, Jackie Sorkin’s latest sugary escape, made its Aventura Mall debut as a 12-room interactive adventure. It’s what she describes as a “love letter to all things Miami”—her most beloved destination growing up—mixed with confetti cannons and tropical vibes. Sorkin and her Candy Kingdom partner, Jay Yadon, offer an immersive experience, combining art and entertainment that counters the last two years of pandemic darkness. “The world needs to be sweet again,” says Sorkin, the founder and cocreator of Candytopia and “Chief Joy Giver” and CEO of the Candy King-

dom. “Let’s turn back on. Let’s remember how wonderful it is to create outrageous moments of joy. That’s what we stand for.” Inside the sweet spectacle, walk through 12 Instagram-approved rooms brimming with colorful elements of wildlife, such as candycrafted dolphins and plush pastel monkeys hanging from palms. You’ll enjoy confetti dance parties and a candy carnival room featuring a pineapple pit to jump into. “My solution is to create a vibe and transport you,” says Sorkin. She adds that Walt Disney is her biggest inspiration, and her goal is “to bring you into this incredible world where everyone belongs, and every person can come here and find something amazing.” (miamisweet.com) —Nicole Schubert

The next big fashion trend Merollo stands by is “feeling beautiful.” She adds: “When we think of fashion, we rarely think of skin care, makeup, or fragrances. Most of the top designers have been jumping into this business with two feet. Tom Ford makes one of the best foundations out there. Hermès lipsticks stay on forever. Louis Vuitton has beautiful fragrances. Beauty is the new fashion trend; it goes hand in hand.”

Athleisure is no longer just for the gym or comfy nights. “High-end brands are not giving up on this business yet,” Merollo says. Of note are Kim Kardashian West’s line of shapewear and activewear (Skims) and her recent partnership with Fendi to produce a curated capsule of activewear, leggings, yoga shorts, and T-shirt dresses. “Hermès is coming out with a line of activewear, and Dior has taken to the slopes with their beautiful take on skiwear,” adds the fashion connoisseur.

“Showing skin and cutouts are here to stay,” says Merollo, noting how many designers have opted for shorter tops and cutouts. “The classic blazer has gotten an upgrade. An Alexander McQueen white blazer shows just enough skin.”

It’s the new year, and this season, there’s something for everyone to slip into to feel their best. Just ask Danielle Merollo, who was recently appointed the director of personal shopping for the Miami Design District’s exclusive shopping concierge service, Styled by MDD. In this new role, she’s presenting fashion connoisseurs with a collection of cosmopolitan fashion finds from the neighborhood. Merollo got her start at Manhattan’s Saks Fifth Avenue locale and later transitioned to Americana Manhasset as the center’s sole personal shopper. With more than 30 years of experience, she brings not only a keen eye and expertise to the neighborhood, but a list of ever-growing, long-lasting relationships with celebrity clientele. Here, she breaks down what she expects to see in 2022 and beyond. (miamidesigndistrict.net) —N.S.

CARILLON MIAMI WELLNESS RESORT PREMIERES MIAMI’S FIRST BIOSTATION Defy your age and supercharge your immune system with Miami’s first biostation. Recently launched at the Carillon Miami Wellness Resort on Miami Beach, this luxury initiative pushes the boundaries on innovative wellness services and is lending both spa and resort goers a new way to embrace a glow-up this season. The service makes it simple and easy to holistically boost your health from every touchpoint. Co-founded by Dr. Ross Bloom, the first-of-its-kind outpost tests for more than 40 cardiovascular, hormone, and inflammatory biomarkers, using diagnostic testing to examine how the body works and identify the root causes of health issues. “The biggest benefit is awareness and the opportunity to learn more about the true state of your health,” explains Bloom.

SUSTAINABILITY

SIP & SAVE

Miami Cocktail Company promotes all things eco-friendly and clean drinking Drink clean with Miami Cocktail Company while also saluting sustainability with its recently launched partnership with Goop, the wellness and lifestyle brand founded by actress Gwyneth Paltrow. For every pack of the Limonata Spritz sold, $1 will benefit charity: water, an organization funding sustainable water projects in areas with the greatest clean water scarcity. Here, Ross Graham, Miami Cocktail Company’s founder and CEO, shares details on the brand’s sustainable initiative and journey to promoting spirits made with all-natural ingredients. (miamicocktail.com) —N.S.

20

Aventura: Why is Miami Cocktail Company’s collaboration with Goop a good fit? Graham: Miami Cocktail Company and Goop have a shared passion for creating and supporting products that consumers can feel good about. In addition to advocating for sustainability, the brand promotes the use of clean ingredients. What can you share about that?

In addition to B-12 formulations, the biostation presents a menu of cosmetic services and injectables. There is also a vast collection of services in the Women’s Health Retreat, each highly recommended by Tammy Pahel, the vice president of spa and wellness operations at the resort. Options include bLean or bEnergized lipotropic injections; IV nutrient therapy infusions; extensive diagnostic testing, which assess more than 100 biomarkers, including hormone, thyroid, and cardiovascular panels; and a comprehensive evaluation with the biostation’s medical provider. (carillon.thebiostation.com) —N.S.

We believe that ingredients and authenticity matter. People today are far more conscious of what they consume. There are more and more seltzers claiming to be better-for-you options, but they start—and stop—with a simple caloric claim. We go beyond just calorie counting in our organic spritz with a commitment to transparency of ingredients. What do you see as the future of Miami Cocktail Company? We want to redefine what ready-to-drink cocktails can be. For so long, RTDs [ready to drink] were overly sweet chemical concoctions that mimicked actual cocktails. They were cheap, cheerful, convenient, and nothing more. But there’s no reason why consumers shouldn’t be able to enjoy an authentic, great-tasting cocktail made with natural ingredients—without the excess calories and without sacrificing taste—that also happens to be in a can. Our vision is to set the standard by which all other RTD cocktails are judged.

Man About TOWN

Nightlife impresario Omar Hernandez on creating memorable moments in the Magic City

O

mar Hernandez had no idea his career in electrical engineering would take a turn during a visit to New York City in his early 20s. After spending time with celebrity hotelier André Balazs at a dinner party, Balazs offered the Venezuelan-born graduate a job as the “Director of Spark” for his portfolio of luxury properties. “I had a natural talent for connecting people, and Balazs recognized that as an essential asset,” says Hernandez. “Being Latin, I always

22

LUIS ENRIQUE RIVIERA CUYAT

By Juliana Accioly

understood what it takes to make a gathering successful. Balazs told me, ‘Whatever you do, just be you,’ and that’s what I did.” Networking and creating engaging experiences soon became Hernandez’s full-time gig. For nearly seven years he applied his talents at swanky concepts such as The Mercer in Manhattan, Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, and the now-shuttered Raleigh in South Beach, drawing in A-listers including Al Pacino, Madonna, Spike Lee, and Katy Perry. “I love to create ambience—the lighting, music, sound, and energy—and make it a curated experience,” says Hernandez. “There’s that sense of exclusivity in what I offer, but I still take everybody in as long as they are an individual of character and can bring something to the table. I support struggling artists; I have always believed in the underdog because I was one.” In 2013, Hernandez opened his own concept, Omar’s La Ranita in New York City. His second spot, Omar at Vaucluse, debuted five years later in the Upper East Side, solidifying his reputation as a celeb-magnet and nightlife impresario. During the pandemic, Hernandez sought out new inspiration by traveling the world and made his New York City comeback last year with the opening of Oh La La!, a vaudeville-themed private supper club tucked away inside La Goulue. He’s since set his sights on Miami, joining forces with visionary hotelier Alan Faena last spring to transform the Saxony Bar & Lounge at the Faena Hotel Miami Beach into a supper club for Nights at the Saxony. “We created a hangout spot for New Yorkers fleeing to Miami for sanctuary,” says Hernandez. “New Yorkers need a good party, and Miami became something like a place of the roaring twenties. In the midst of a pandemic and economic depression, people were still celebrating, they still believed in the idea of freedom, and the city was allowing them to pursue that.” Hernandez plans to further establish a presence in the Magic City with future collabs. He is again partnering with the Faena to create an immersive social dining experience called Futopia that will integrate the restaurant Los Fuegos with the Living Room, an intimate bar and entertainment hot spot. His goal is to build a new bridge between Miami and New York City and to bring “that sense of [New York City] sophistication to complement what’s already here,” he explains. “Miami is the only city in America that, right now, embodies what they call the American good life.” «

Eat your way to a stronger IMMUNE SYSTEM By Ivey Leidy Photography by Kent Anderson

T

he ancient Greek physician Hippocrates famously mused: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” In our current environment, this credo has never been more vital and the immune system has never felt more important. A complex network of white blood cells, tissues, and organs like the spleen, tonsils, and lymph nodes, the immune system is essential for our survival, defending us against bacteria, viruses, parasites, and disease. Luckily, nature has provided us with key nutrients and vitamins to support this system that keeps us strong and healthy. The main fuels that boost our immunity are antioxidants, such as vitamins A, C, D, E, and

zinc, all of which protect our cells from free radicals and damage. In addition to diet, there are numerous other ways to boost your immune system. As little as 20 minutes a day of exercise, for example, can promote good circulation and stimulate the immune system. Water helps to flush out toxins through the lymphatic system.

Ensuring you get good quality sleep can also restore the body; in fact, infection-fighting molecules are produced while we rest. Finally, practicing self-care is of the utmost importance as stress and high cortisol levels can suppress the immune system. Consider regularly making time for self-care activities such as massages, facials, and meditation.

AVENTURIST THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT!

Wine & Dine

When entertaining in a restaurant, it all comes down to personal touches By Steven Stolman Photography by Jerry Rabinowitz I’m a pretty good cook—at least, that’s what people say. The fact that I’ve written two cookbooks and had one of my recipes featured in The New York Times would support this claim. That recipe for roasted chicken Provençal received the still-mind-bogglingto-me designation of being the most popular recipe of the year. Who’da thunk it? For as many instances in which I love nothing more than welcoming folks for a home-cooked meal, there are an equal number of times when there’s nothing I’d rather do less. It could be due to work deadlines, family mishigas, sheer exhaustion, or anything else on the laundry list of things that just plain suck the wind out of my culinary sails. During these walks through the shadow of the valley of inhospitality, what’s a serial entertainer to do? The answer is to let someone else, or someplace else, do the work. My favorite someplace would be a restaurant that I frequent on a regular basis, one that will allow me to add personal touches so that the experience is different from a runof-the-mill “let’s meet somewhere for dinner” dinner. The celebration of our ninth wedding anniversary was one such instance. Having just arrived back in Palm Beach after a summer’s absence, plus a departure to our new place in Chicago looming, the last thing I felt capable of doing was putting together a dinner party. But having survived our way (so far) through the pandemic, I wanted to do something special to acknowledge the milestone, not only for my husband, Rich, and myself, but for our few buddies who were with us on that chilly weekend in Milwaukee. During my many years living in a small studio 36

Inset: The custom tablescape at Swifty’s at The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach left: The anniversary invitation

apartment in New York City, the nearby Swifty’s was my go-to for ex-cathedra celebration dinners. Doing private parties within a bustling restaurant has long been one of proprietor Robert Caravaggi’s specialties; it seemed that there was always something special going on at one of the coveted tables in the back room.

And now that the iconic restaurant has been reborn at the stylish Colony Hotel in Palm Beach (thecolonypalmbeach.com), the choice was a no-brainer. Swifty’s terrific staff couldn’t have been more accommodating, especially general manager Michelle Stokes, who helped me create a highly personalized evening for our guests.

AVENTURA MAGAZINE

036_ENTERTAINMENT_0122.indd 36

11/23/21 2:27 PM

First came the invitation. Since this was a small gathering, I turned to Paperless Post (paperlesspost.com), uploading a favorite wedding photo to create a chic invite. To add to the specialness of the occasion, I asked the restaurant if I could make a menu for the evening, pared down to a selection of Swifty’s classics and devoid of prices. They not only laid the whole thing out for me, complete with wedding pic and custom verbiage, but they had it printed and waiting upon our arrival. One of the most important aspects of entertaining in a restaurant is making the table look special and, moreover, different from all the other tables in the joint. Floral designer extraordinaire Tom Mathieu (tommathieu.com) crafted a spectacular arrangement encircled by votive candles that made for a magically festive setting. We completed the scene with place cards in little metal monkey holders that I brought from home. And while Swifty’s offers their own delectable selection of desserts, I opted for carrot cake as an ode to the one we had on our wedding day. Nine years ago, a much-loved Milwaukee restaurant baked that version. For this event, Café Sweets in Northwood (cafesweetsbakeryfl.com) made a pretty yummy doppelgänger, and Swifty’s happily accommodated my

request to serve it—complete with a dramatic sparkler. The end product was a distinctive little dinner party that looked and felt just like the kind that we frequently host at our place. But instead of a sweaty brow from standing over a hot stove all day and that oh-socharming after-dinner sight of a kitchen sink full of dirty dishes, the only thing I had to deal with was the check. So, the next time you’re in the hosting hot seat but don’t have it in you to do it yourself, consider a personalized restaurant dinner party. All it takes is a little effort and a few special touches to create an event that will not only be memorable but delightfully hassle free. And at the end of the day, who doesn’t want that? «

Clockwise from above: Enjoy watersports like kayaking and surfing, alfresco dining, and yoga on the rocks at Four Seasons Resort Seychelles, Mahé.

Given the bounty of beautiful beaches in the nearby Caribbean, it’s reasonable to ask: Why travel as far as the Seychelles for a holiday? Step into a treehouse villa at the Four Seasons Resort Seychelles, Mahé, and you’ll see why. Here, discover a marriage of next-level natural splendor and amenity-rich accommodations that defines the modern paradise. Etched into the mountainside above Petite Anse bay, the resort overlooks more than an idyllic duet of white sands and turquoise waters. It also grants bird’s-eye views of the dramatic granitic landscapes that make Seychelles’ beaches unlike any other in the world, distinguished by towering rippled slabs and mammoth geometric boulders punctuated by broadleaf forest. Beyond the raw beauty, the 67-key property wows with spaces designed for embracing languid days. Beginning at a generous 2,002 square feet, each freestanding villa boasts an infinity pool, lounge deck, outdoor shower, and open-air reading pavilion. Inside, a feminine-tinted, Creole-inspired aesthetic feels at once comfortable and stylish, while a sleek bathroom enhances the Zen vibe (a heavenly glass-encased bathtub with panoramic views helps). In between hours of relaxation, try yoga on the beach or on the rocks, hike trails leading to ancient ruins, take surf lessons, or mentally recharge at Le Syel Spa, located at the resort’s highest point. After experiencing this extraordinary setting and a sanctuary that feels like the ideal beach house, the distance required to reach the Seychelles is no longer a question—it’s a welcomed rite of passage to a new echelon of luxury travel. Sprinkled across the Indian Ocean, the 115 islands that form Africa’s smallest nation are a contrast of high-rising granite islands and low-lying coralline islets. The latter dot the archipelago’s southern reaches and remain mostly uninhabited, with a few glorious exceptions. Case in point: the Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island, which is blessed with 9 miles of coastline, vibrant coral reefs, a thriving population of Aldabra tortoises, and 71 villas dressed in an understated mix of whites, woods, and natural textures. Prior to touchdown, the scenic flight to Desroches puts its far-flung location in perspective, cueing all the fabulous feels of separation from the outside world. Once on ground, another sense of awe hits, as the island’s riches and exclusivity grow even more tangible.

Active travelers can look forward to more than 70 activities, from snorkeling to deep-sea fishing, tortoise feeding, stargazing, and yoga. For those who prefer to go schedule-free, a handful of beaches beckon, as do miles of bike trails and random tortoise encounters aplenty (look out for Desroches’ oldest reptilian resident, 120-year-old George). You could also simply enjoy the good life by unapologetically lounging around your pool (every villa has one), treating yourself to a restorative spin at the Circle of Connection Spa, or savoring exquisite sunsets at the island’s tiered lighthouse, which triples as a lookout point, bar, and restaurant. While you’ll have to share Desroches with other guests, the island’s sheer size, remote location, and breadth of activities mean you’ll rarely encounter another human. It’s a wonderland reserved for the lucky few, one that can fulfill the promise of total isolation. (fourseasons.com/seychellesdesroches)

In early 2021, Thai-based hotel giant Anantara made its grand Seychelles debut with the rebrand of an iconic Bill Bensley–designed hideaway often regarded as the archetype of coastal African luxury. Say hello to the new Anantara Maia Seychelles Villas, a 30-acre retreat along Mahé’s southwest coast, comprising 30 thatched villas measuring 2,691 square feet apiece, all rife with transitional indoor-outdoor spaces (including a duo of infinity pools) and breathtaking views of the Seychelles’ boulderstrewn beaches. Every villa comes with a dedicated private butler, whose sole job is to deliver your perfect stay in paradise. Since everyone’s version of perfection may differ, a gamechanging “Beyond All Inclusive” policy fosters multiple ones. As the name suggests, “Beyond All Inclusive” is more than limitless food and beverage offerings; it allows guests to get or do whatever they want, whenever they want, however they want. This extends to unscripted meals any time, which can be served on the beach, under the stars, in the pool—you name it. It includes impromptu or planned adventures such as instructor-led qigong, unlimited scuba diving, and a Champagne sunset on the beach with tiki torches (and, yes, the likes of Billecart-Salmon Brut Champagne are part of this all-inclusive). In this fairy tale, there’s no need for a lantern or a genie to grant your wishes; just WhatsApp an attentive butler, and his or her all-star team will ensure all your island fantasies become reality. Hilton’s latest upscale brand, LXR Hotels & Resorts, is making waves thanks to the October 2021 opening of Mango House Seychelles, an exquisite boutique property with a big personality. Once the family estate of Italian photographer Gian Paolo Barbieri, Mango House is now an intimate resort of 41 seafront villas and suites, where luxury lies in the smallest details. Slick staff uniforms, poolside mood music, and small clusters of mod guest rooms set the

tone, collectively channeling a bohemian sophistication on par with St. Barths. Committed to authenticity, the amenities and experiences at Mango House skew Seychellois, from rimmed sun hats and printed bath kimonos designed by renowned artists Michael and Alyssa Adams, to the spa’s Belliche products hailing from a local one-woman microenterprise. At Koyoke, one of five on-site bars and restaurants, choose from 41 hard-to-find Indian Ocean rums or work your way through a menu of tea-infused gin martinis, including a blend created just for Mango House.

At Moutya, feast on fiery Seychellois cuisine prepared using traditional methods (think: hot coals and steamed husks). Given such attention to detail, it’s no surprise that all staff members are briefed on each incoming guest daily, lending to highly personalized service. And unlike most high-end properties that encourage never leaving, Mango House offers every room a free electric vehicle for exploration, allowing guests to experience the epic beauty and culture of the Seychelles on an even grander scale. And as soon as you enter your villa—with its airy, bright spaces and breezeswept terraces with a view of the sea—you may just decide that island time is the best time of all. Not surprisingly, The Islands of Islamorada was developed by the Frisbie Group, one of Palm Beach’s most well-known familyowned businesses. From Boca, With Love PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE BOCA RATON

The Boca Raton pens a new chapter with MAJOR RENOVATIONS that restore its historic luster By Mary Murray

hat’s old is new again—and then some—at The Boca Raton. Formerly The Boca Raton Resort & Club, the property has embraced its original name and, with it, a return to the type of bespoke luxury that made it a coveted destination in the first half of the twentieth century. As it prepares to celebrate its hundredth birthday later this decade, The Boca Raton is unveiling a $175 million phase one transformation inclusive of refreshed accommodations, must-visit restaurants, and exciting gathering spaces that

46

are sure to amplify the resort’s glamorous reputation. Top among these new spaces is the reimagined Cloister, where renovations have struck a balance between honoring architect Addison Mizner’s vision and creating cool hangouts worthy of the twenty-first-century jet-setter. The Mizner Lounge, for example, is anchored by a historic fireplace, while the building itself has been repainted in the same white hue it donned in 1926. Over at MB Supper Club, diners are transported to the 1930s and ’40s, complete with live entertainment, vintage dishware, and monkey motifs galore— because every Mizner property must have a reference or two to good ole Johnnie Brown. MB Supper Club is just one of the more than half-dozen new dining concepts at The Boca Raton, many of which are collaborations with New York–based Major Food Group. Leading the charge are Marisol at The Boca Raton Beach Club and The Flamingo Grill, which opened over the summer and offers a retroredux take on the American chophouse experience. Amid a chic convivial setting, patrons can sample filet mignon, Cajun snapper, Mon-

tauk Pearl oysters, and fried-to-perfection onion rings that are worth the trip to Boca alone. Additional openings at the Cloister include modern Japanese and Italian eateries as well as the lakefront Palm Court cocktail lounge and Sadelle’s, a Major Food Group brunching hot spot with roots in NYC. When it comes to new accommodations, the biggest makeover is taking place at the Tower, where the acclaimed Rockwell Group has brought artistic touches to the 225 suites. Updated suites are also available at the Bungalows and the adults-only Yacht Club, which boasts personal concierges and floor valets. Perhaps the most see-and-be-seen addition at The Boca Raton is the Harborside Pool Club. Here, hotel guests and club members can take a dip at one of four pools, engage in retail therapy at on-site boutiques, or lounge the day away in a private cabana. Kids are privy to their own club, as well as two massive water slides and a 450-foot lazy river. All of this—and even more—adds up to a new era of excellence for The Boca Raton. While retaining a reverence for the past, the resort is catering to next-gen luxury travelers, those who know that where you stay is just as important as where you go. (thebocaraton.com) «

Rolls-Royce gives its new Ghost the Black Badge treatment—and a whole lot of ATTITUDE

By Howard Walker

I

’m seeing stars—literally—sparkling down from the sea of roofmounted, fiber-optic LED lights that make up Rolls-Royce’s acclaimed Starlight Headliner. As I gaze up, I spot a shooting star coursing its way across the roof lining. Looking forward, I’m awed by the illuminated passenger-side dashboard replete with 850 twinkly LEDs. I crank up Don McLean singing “starry, starry night” on the 1,300-watt, 16-speaker stereo and the celestial mode is complete. All this ethereal illumination is offered on every exquisite new RollsRoyce Ghost sedan. The difference here is that we’re driving the very latest, most noir Ghost yet: the 2022 Black Badge Ghost. Black Badge models are in pretty high demand at the Flying Lady company these days. After kicking the series off back in 2016 with the Black Badge Wraith coupe, Rolls-Royce followed up with the previous-gen Ghost, the Dawn convertible, and the box-on-wheels Cullinan SUV. This new BB Ghost is the carmaker’s darkest, boldest, most “murdered out” offering to date, a car that firmly takes the company over to the dark side. Darth Vader would be proud. Design cues include stealthy-black finishes for that imposing grille and iconic Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament. And if you go for black

paintwork—why wouldn’t you?—the hue is rumored to be the darkest in the industry. Not into black? There are 44,000 colors in the Ghost palette to choose from, but there’s nothing too menacing about a Black Badge Ghost in Mary Kay pink. Inside it’s all deep Bolivar wood, dark carbon fiber–like veneer, and blacked-out chrome, though the contrasting teal leather of our test car was mindblowingly gorgeous. The BB package also includes a set of stunning new 21-inch composite wheels, each made up of layers of carbon fiber, with a forged aluminum hub and aerospace-grade titanium fasteners. Power for the turbine-smooth 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 increases from the “standard” Ghost’s 563-horsepower to 591. Even more noteworthy is the bump in torque from 627 lb-ft to 664. To bring some more, dare we say, “sportiness” to the way the car handles, the air suspension is a little firmer, with a tad more heft added to the steering for a more dynamic and agile feel. The introduction of a “Low” mode gear setting (Rolls’ equivalent of “Sport”) for the car’s reworked 8-speed automatic quickens acceleration. It now unleashes maximum torque at just 1,700 rpm and is said to cut shift times in half. The latest Ghost has always felt rapid, but in Black Badge guise, off-the-line response feels stronger, more urgent. Zero-to-60-mph sprinting time is reported to have dropped by 0.3 seconds to 4.5 seconds. But it’s the recalibrated steering that, for me, is the biggest change. It feels more precise, a little heavier, more responsive. And, coupled with standard all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering, this Ghostly Black Badge has become my favorite Rolls-Royce ever. Pricing begins at $437,350—the Black Badge package adds $43,850 to the sticker—though start talking to the people at Rolls-Royce Bespoke division and you’ll quickly get up to the $483,700 value of our tester car. But trust me, piloting this Ghost will definitely have you seeing stars. «

ESCAPE HIGH SEAS

Exit STRATEGY

Head off to the Bahamas or even the Greek islands in the stylish, Turkish-built charter yacht ONLY NOW By Howard Walker You’ve got to love a charter yacht that comes with a “snuggling pad” as one of its key features. And why not? If you’re anchored under the galaxy of stars off Green Turtle Cay in the Bahamas, why wouldn’t you want to cuddle with your honey? The luxury charter yacht market is currently on fire as families crave to head off-the-grid in safe, sanitized isolation. While there are literally thousands of charter vessels available for forays into the warm waters of the Caribbean and Bahamas, one of our current favorites is the stunning 113-foot minisuperyacht Only Now from Turkish builder Tansu. She’s available for rent through leading charter bookers Hill Robinson for around $80,000 a week between now and spring. Then she’ll head back across the pond for summer cruising throughout the Mediterranean—the Greek islands are some of her favorite stomping grounds— when the weekly rate goes up to€ 80,000 euros, or roughly $92,000. What’s especially appealing about Only Now is she’s just undergone a $850,000 refit that included a full paint job and reupholster that, accord-

50

ing to Hill Robinson, makes her “box fresh.” As part of the makeover, the top deck was extended to fit an eight-seat dining table, a backlit onyx bar, and a huge, rotating TV screen for under-the-stars screenings. It’s perfect, no doubt, for watching The Perfect Storm. We hear the crashing waves sound downright scary on Only Now’s upgraded surroundsound system. The yacht can accommodate up to eight guests in four spacious ensuite cabins on the lower deck. The full-beam master suite is centrally located and boasts a walk-in closet, his and hers bathrooms, and an office area when duty calls. There’s also a large VIP suite forward, a double stateroom to port, and a twin stateroom to starboard. On the main level, there’s a cozy salon that opens to a shaded back deck with a lovely dining area, seating area, and sun-worshipping pads galore. In the tucked-away galley, pretty much all of the cooking equipment and appliances were changed or upgraded during the refit—as was every piece of cutlery, glassware, and crockery. But what I really love about Only Now is that in a world of nondescript, Clorox-bottle-shaped plastic yachts, she manages to stand out from the crowd. That dramatic, wave-cleaving axe bow, square-edged top, and battleship-gray paint are guaranteed to spin heads from Maine to Miami.

Built in 2012 by Istanbul-based Tansu Yachts, she also has the distinction of being crafted entirely from wood. A legacy that goes back centuries, Turkish shipyards are masters at working with timber. But Tansu takes the art form to a new level with its light-yet-strong, wood-infusedwith-epoxy construction techniques. Only Now is no slouch either when she needs to get to Marsh Harbour in time for a seafood dinner at Conky Joe’s. Twin 1,700-horsepower Caterpillar diesels can punch her to a top speed of 21 knots. Throttle back to 12 and she’ll run close to 1,400 nautical miles on one tank. When you reach that idyllic anchorage, Only Now has all the water toys you’ll need to keep you and your crew amused for hours. There’s a Novurania RIB with a 70-hp motor for wakeboard adventures, plus a couple of Seabobs and a Sea-Doo Jet Ski—both new this year— along with a small armada of paddleboards, towables, and water skis. Speaking of the crew, Captain Matt Sowter and his team of five are there to ensure you’re safe, disinfected, and no doubt topped up with adult beverages. Chartering a yacht like Only Now is a great way to sample the superyacht lifestyle without actually owning one. And as a means of kicking back while exploring breathtaking locations, it’s hard to beat. Meagan Whelan, Hill Robinson’s charter manager, at their Fort Lauderdale office can tell you everything you need to know about Only Now—even the scoop about that snuggling pad. «

WEALTH

MARKET REPORT

WHAT GOES UP

While the surge in demand is expected to continue, housing prices are likely to STABILIZE in 2022 By Judy Martel When it comes to the housing market, the word on everyone’s lips is price. It seems money is no object for hungry buyers who have been snapping up homes with a speed reminiscent of the real estate bubble that eventually burst back in 2007, heralding the subsequent global recession. But this situation is not the same, says Brad O’Connor, chief economist for the Florida Realtors association. “The main reason this time is different is that we don’t have enough housing supply,” he says. “Before the recession of 2007-2009, we had too many homes and not enough buyers.” These days, there are not nearly enough 52

homes to satisfy buyers, and low interest rates are helping fuel the demand, he adds. “The significance of the market now is the fact that it has staying power, which is not a surprise because of low housing supply and high demand. The surprise was last year when it came roaring back sooner than we expected.” Even before the pandemic, builders were plagued by rising labor costs and shortages in building supplies. But since then, the situation has become exacerbated, leaving scores of potential buyers frustrated. Millennials comprise a sizable chunk of discouraged potential buyers, O’Connor notes. A larger group than its predecessor baby boomers and Gen Xers, these 30- and 40-somethings are having children and seeking to move out of cramped urban areas into bigger homes with more space. As long as supply remains low, prices won’t come down, although O’Connor says they have begun to stabilize from the highs reached a year ago. Aside from millennials, luxury buyers are also out in force, with sales in the million-plus

AVENTURA MAGAZINE

Luxury homes with outdoor space and home offices are in demand.

market softening slightly in the past year but still outpacing all other markets. While there are more of these homes for sale, it’s not enough to satisfy demand. Record stock market performance has also helped spur wealthy buyers into putting some of their gains into the purchase of larger or second homes. And let’s not forget the migration of out-of-state buyers—many flocking from northern urban areas—who made up a large portion of the luxury homebuyers over the

past year. The reopening of the Canadian border, O’Connor says, could bring a fresh uptick in sales. One common theme among all buyers that has remained consistent since the COVID-19 outbreak is the desire for more space. “A lot of people got stuck in their homes during the pandemic, and some are finding they might not need to commute to an office anymore,” says O’Connor. “They’re looking for homes with room for a home office and maybe

some space outside for the kids to play while they do a Zoom meeting.” The good news–bad news for buyers is that while supply might not improve significantly anytime soon, prices won’t continue to soar, says O’Connor. “Price growth is slowing down, as it should in a healthy market, because it’s unsustainable as it is.” «

THE POWER

of

ELENA & GRANT CARDONE

Grant Cardone has closed countless deals. But the hardest one was getting Elena Cardone to become his wife. “At the time, he was so stable, and I was so scared and fluttery and didn’t want to commit to anyone or anything,” Elena recalls. “I thought men were out to be controlling and take away my independence.” But Grant was persistent. Because he ap-

proached Elena with so much love and care, she says she realized he wasn’t going away. His love was real and deep, so she came around. Together, they have built an empire centered on empowering others to achieve their dreams. It all started from their own struggles. “Ten years ago, I was trying to take care of my family, and I realized I had failed,” says Grant. “I was a newlywed with a baby on the way, and the economy was in trouble and my businesses were failing after 25 years of work. I was sitting

down in reflection, thinking about what I could do differently, and I realized I could have gone 10 times bigger. I ran into the kitchen and told Elena that that was what I needed to do.” His realization led to the best-selling book The 10X Rule, which outlines how taking “massive action” can lead to success. The book has spawned growth conferences and corporate sales and marketing engagements with both small businesses and Fortune 500 companies. Elena has been an integral part of that growth,

authoring her own best seller, Build an Empire: How to Have it All, and running programs for women who “may relate to me easier than they would Grant,” she says. “There aren’t enough women-run ventures,” continues Elena, who homeschools the couple’s children. “Everything I’ve done, I’ve done behind the scenes, providing [the] mindset, infrastructure, and support. Grant’s book became successful and it saved our marriage. I want to show other women how they

can have it all too.” Through the Cardone Foundation, the couple also provides mentoring and financial literacy education to at-risk adolescents, especially those without a father figure. “I was an at-risk kid because my dad died when I was 10,” says Grant. “I was raised by a single mother and wanted a father figure in life. I want to give small kids and big kids what I didn’t have, showing them that they don’t have to wait until they graduate to succeed.”

In 2022, Grant plans to build up his $1 billion real estate portfolio while Elena looks to establish her own real estate enterprise. They will also launch 10X Media, which will produce shows about startups and entrepreneurs, as well as 10X Health Systems, which will provide alternative solutions to medication and surgery. “Right now, dreaming big is harder to do and harder to achieve,” says Grant. “But I also see people working together and becoming more entrepreneurial, not giving up.” — Paige Bowers JANUARY 2022

About 12 years ago, Dr. Amira Ogunleye was having a girls’ night out with one of her friends when she noticed a tall man in a gray shirt sitting at a table nearby. “My friend nudged me and said, ‘See that guy in a gray shirt? A man like that will change your entire life,’” recalls Amira. Mr. Gray Shirt was former Miami Dolphins defensive end Wale Ogunleye, who noticed Amira noticing him. He also noticed another guy checking Amira out as she got up to leave. But before Amira could get away, Wale reached out to her and said, “It’s me,” in what he describes as his “best sultry voice.” “I thought he was something else,” says Amira. “We talked for a bit and then he asked if he could text me later. And I said no, because real men who want to get to know me call.” Wale called and called some more. In that time, Amira learned that he was so much more than handsome looks and a successful career. He was someone who, like her, had an immigrant background and valued hard work and family. He was old school, just like she was. And he was someone who could accept that she was her own woman, with her own career as an award-winning cosmetic dentist. “She was like, ‘I know what you’re used to [with other women], but I’m a badass in my own right,’” says Wale. “Over the next four years she showed me just how bad she was, and we got married.” Since then, Amira says it has been all fire and fireworks, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. There is no 50-50 division of labor with these two—only 100-100, whether they’re raising their two children or doing the laundry. “Whatever we do, we do it 100 percent,” says Wale, who is now head of sports and entertainment at UBS Wealth Management. “It’s the best way to navigate life. That’s what has made us so successful in anything we put our minds to. Plus, we love each other and care about each other’s happiness. And happiness starts with us flourishing in our marriage, our personal lives, and with our friends.” The Ogunleyes frequently think about their legacy and what they can do to uplift, encourage, and inspire others. Neither of them came from money, so they strive to help others from underprivileged backgrounds, oftentimes paying for everything from Thanksgiving turkeys to smile makeovers and dental care—all out of their own pockets. Amira, for her part, mentors young women of color because there are so few of them in the dental industry. No matter the project, the Ogunleyes are in it together, pushing each other to help as many people as they can. “I’m appreciative of what we have together,” says Amira. “For us to have strong values and views and then to go out in the world with the same mission of impacting others is a blessing.” — P. Emina Nazarian says it was Sam’s height that first caught her eye. She jokes that he was the only man she had ever met who was taller than her. It was nearly 12 years ago, and the former model (and winner of Elite Model Management’s Elite Model Look contest in 2001) had been vacationing in St. Barth’s for the new year when she noticed Sam commanding the attention of a large group nearby. “They were all focused on him,” she recalls. “That intrigued me, and I wanted to know, ‘Who is this man?’ I wanted to have a little bit of that attention from him.” When Emina eventually got Sam’s attention, he says there were sparks right away. “I think what got me instantly was the energy and the laughter,” says Sam, who at the time was living in Los Angeles. “It instantly turned into 30 minutes of laughing when we first met.” The pair eventually parted ways—Emina traveling back to New York while Sam returned to the West Coast—but they kept in touch. “It was that constant level of humor that connected us and kept us connected until we met a couple months later in New York,” shares Sam. The pair wed in 2015 and have since grown into a family of five. The couple now calls Miami home base, having recently purchased a home in Coral Gables. They’re no strangers to balancing their work and family life. Sam created the hospitality brand sbe in 2002, which includes a portfolio of more than 45 high-end brands in nine countries. He’s since refocused his attention to form C3 by sbe, the largest digital food service IP company in the world. C3 aims to reshape the future of the food industry through virtual kitchens, full-service restaurants, and lifestyle food halls. One of Sam’s most recent launches is the Citizens Miami culinary market at the flagship Brightline station, which features partnerships with such acclaimed top chefs as Masaharu Morimoto and Dario Cecchini. During her modeling career, Emina appeared on the covers of international fashion magazines, from Vogue to Marie Claire, and walked the runway for Tom Ford. With family roots in Albania, she now serves as vice president of the Fundjave Ndryshe Foundation, an organization based in the Balkans that works to pull families out of poverty, bring them closer to city life, create homes, and provide medical assistance. The couple also gives back—both internationally and in the U.S.—including work with the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Family Foundation. They’ll often partner with the Make-AWish Foundation and local charities that support law enforcement and first responders. “Now that we’re in Miami, we’re starting to focus here,” says Emina, who is optimistic about the ways she and Sam will be able to combine their skills to help communities in need in South Florida. — Melissa Puppo 58

By LINDA MARX Photography by JERRY RABINOWITZ

am Champion, weather anchor of ABC-TV Eyewitness News in New York City, admits he has few hobbies beyond meteorology. But Champion is anything but boring. Just ask his husband, artist Rubem Robierb, who will tell you that Champion is passionate about advocating for causes close to his heart. “Sam and I connected on every level early on,” says Robierb. “We have always connected on important social issues. As we have grown more as a couple, we enjoy tackling them together and being around like minds.” Whether they’re at their home in Manhattan (complete with a rooftop garden) or in Miami Beach (boasting panoramic ocean views), the couple devotes a chunk of their leisure hours to rallying for equal marriage, supporting the National LGBTQ Task Force, and advocating for organizations like GLAAD and Point Foundation LGBT. “As individuals, Rubem and I intend to spend the rest of our lives looking for deeper meaning and going the extra mile to help others, as well as build on our own love,” says Champion. “We are interested in climate change and major social issues affecting everyone. We want to do our part in finding equality for all.” Champion grew up in a military family, which meant moving to a new city every two years. It was tough going, but it shaped him—helping him develop a talent for meeting and understanding diverse types of people. It made a career in broadcast journalism (where constant relocation and reinvention are required for success) seem like a natural fit. After graduating from high school in Fairfax, Virginia, he earned a degree in broadcast news from Eastern Ken-

60

tucky University in 1983. Then there was a string of local broadcast markets: First, Paducah, Kentucky, where he cut his teeth in the weather department. Then it was on to Jacksonville, Florida, until he landed the most coveted local market of them all: New York City. In 1988, he left Florida for a weather forecasting gig at WABC-TV’s Eyewitness News. In 2006, Champion was called up to the TV big leagues: promoted to ABC’s Good Morning America and ABC News. “This was great for me because I could concentrate more on my passions of environment and climate,” says Champion. “Working for a network is different from local. Local is meritbased, while network is exciting but political.” In 2013, he went from network TV to cable TV, leaving ABC to become an on-air broadcaster and a managing editor at The Weather Channel, a time, he insists, when he “didn’t take a day off.” He left three years later. But eventually, Champion missed television. He returned to ABC as a fill-in weather forecaster on Good Morning America during chief meteorologist Ginger Zee’s maternity leave. By 2019, he had re-installed himself on the weather beat at WABC-TV, where he now broadcasts four days a week. To balance his on-air life with the love of his life, Champion splits his time between New York and Florida—flying to Miami Beach each Thursday for long weekends with Robierb at their South Beach condo, and heading back to New York each Sunday. That schedule might exhaust some couples. But it suits Champion and Robierb—who met at a Miami Beach New Year’s Eve Party in 2009—just fine. The pair was married

THERE ARE TIMES I NEED TO BE IN MY STUDIO AND [SAM] IS AT WORK, BUT ALL OF OUR FREE TIME IS SPENT TOGETHER.” in 2012 during a ceremony held at their New York apartment. South Florida was out of the question, as same-sex marriage was not legally recognized in the Sunshine State until 2015. A few days later, the couple flew to Miami Beach to celebrate their nuptials. Robierb—a prominent visual artist—grew up in Maranhão, Brazil. He says his first artistic expression was poetry. A love for photography followed soon after. “Like with poetry, I could see how to create photographic images that convey a more profound meaning; like reading a poem would reveal layers of meaning and metaphors,” he says. He received formal photography training after moving to São Paulo, Brazil, to work as a commercial photographer in fashion and fine arts. It wasn’t long before he was discovered by the French Art et Partage Association, an organization that sponsors art exhibitions in France. In 2005, they offered Robierb his first solo photography show called “Bresil Autrement.” His works were shown in Paris, then in Aix en Provence, France; Milan, Italy; Zurich, Switzerland; and Monte Carlo. “I traveled with my big pieces for the show and was invited to exhibit with the group for the next three years.” But Robierb was moving in new directions beyond photography. So in 2008, he relocated to Miami and opened a studio in Wynwood. In the center of international and local art galler62

ies mixed with street art and graffiti, he began to pursue yet another artistic form: painting. Soon he was also creating sculptures. He took a break from photography to concentrate on silk screen and murals. “Art finds a way to express itself,” he says. “I wanted to bring to the surface my statement and revolutionary vision.” Since then, Robierb has combined his talents of poetry, painting, photography, and sculpture to create captivating multimedia works of art. They’re full of symbolism and messages, as Robierb seeks to elicit an emotional response from those who view his work—using it as a platform on behalf of a multitude of social causes. “We can connect with people through art,” he says. “The message is powerful, and my message has to mean something.” Robierb moved to New York in 2013 to debut a show called “Bullets and Butterflies,” juxtaposing the beauty and delicateness of butterflies with elements of war like bullets and machine guns—a powerful metaphor with messages about life, war, death, and metamorphosis. Two years later, the city of Fort Lauderdale commissioned him to create a large-scale public mural that drew heavily on the themes of “Bullets and Butterflies,” painted on the walls of Shade Post downtown. In 2019, during Art Basel Miami, Robierb used his artistic voice to draw attention to climate change. His Climate Meltdown, a 36-

foot long floating ice sculpture, was placed in The Shore Club swimming pool. It featured the words, “How dare you?” carved into the ice, alluding to a powerful speech that Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg had recently delivered at the United Nations. “The intent was to send a clear message that we are against the clock on climate change,” Robierb says. “The sculpture completely melted in eight hours.” In March 2021, he installed a new 12-foot heart-shaped sculpture at Boynton Beach City Hall. “I wanted to pay tribute to the health care workers during the coronavirus pandemic,” says Robierb, who also created another sculptural show in May on racial equality at Randall’s Island Park in New York. “As an artist I use any medium to tell others what matters.” But it’s not all work for this dynamic duo. “There are times I need to be in my studio and [Sam] is at work, but all of our free time is spent together,” Robierb says. To that end, Champion and Robierb recently bought a vacation home on Ipanema Beach in Brazil. They are now renovating it and hope to use the sunsplashed space at least two months a year to help them slow down and enjoy life together. “We are happiest when together now more than ever,” says Champion. “We always put the other first. We both believe his needs are more important than mine.” «

Haute SILVIA TCHERASSI AND SOFIA ESPINOSA TCHERASSI, THE MOTHER-DAUGHTER TEAM BEHIND SILVIA TCHERASSI—A FASHION HOUSE KNOWN FOR ITS LATIN AMERICAN FLAVOR—DISH ON THEIR INFLUENCES, STYLE ADVICE, AND MORE By KATHERINE LANDE Portrait photography by GABOR JURINA Architectural photography by MATTIA BETTINELLI

64

Silvia, you began your career as an interior designer. What influenced your decision to cross over into fashion? Silvia: Since I was little, I have always been

attracted to all things fashion and aesthetics. But, at the moment of choosing a career, I went for interior design where I was able to grasp an understanding of color, volumes, and textures. I was already working on my first projects when fashion resurfaced in my life. The experimentation was a successful one from the start, and so I decided to focus on it completely. That being said, both my vision and philosophy on fashion and interiors are the same: casual luxury that is never excessive or pretentious.

Often the worlds of interior design and fashion intersect. How does each influence the other in your collections? Silvia: I have always thought that the bound-

aries between these two disciplines are almost imperceptible: The founding principles are the same, as well as that search for balance between form and function that always per-

meates the creative process. I approach the female form and spaces as a sort of blank canvas—always keeping in mind that both have the power to communicate and reflect the personality of whomever inhabits the space or is wearing a piece.

Your collections are known for their Colombian craftsmanship and modern designs. How does that make them stand out? Silvia: I have always been guided by a defined

vision and the quest for a natural, effortless elegance, which I feel is ultimately the differentiating factor in my collections and one that gives my pieces a timeless quality. Women who are inclined to my designs are after garments that are special and unique, as opposed to just wearing the trends of the season.

What inspires you when designing a new collection? Silvia: Inspiration can come from anywhere,

but more importantly, one must be able to capture and express it in their own language. Of course, there are recurring themes of inspiration

like art and architecture. I have been moved by the pioneering works of women like Charlotte Perriand, Frida Kahlo, Anne Truitt, and Louise Bourgeois—they have all influenced my designs in one way or another.

Sofia, what was the defining moment when you knew you wanted to join forces with your mother? Sofia: I can’t remember a specific moment; my earliest memory was

being present at my mother’s fashion shows or draping fabrics over mannequins as a child. Going to Parsons felt like a natural next step, as did joining the company. I don’t think I have ever contemplated another work environment.

Individually, how do you each influence the Silvia Tcherassi brand? Silvia: My primary function as founder and creative director for the

brand is to keep my original vision and DNA going, but to make it evolve and resound with the present to maintain its relevancy. Sofia: I like to think I bring a fresh perspective as well as formidable and varied work experience to the table. As much as I respect tradition and admire the company’s legacy, being from a completely different generation is a factor that definitely influences my outlook on fashion as a whole. 66

11/29/21 12:51 PM

What’s your secret to successfully mixing professional and personal lives? Silvia: For us, there is no limit between one or the other and we thor-

oughly enjoy what we do—our work and the company is our greatest passion. Since my kids were born and grew up in this world it all feels completely natural to them. Sofia: We have a great relationship rooted in respect—she has always been the most important role model in my life. Working alongside my mother is synonymous to constant growth and has provided me with a valuable education. As for the separation of work and personal matters, it really does not exist—both are enmeshed and I think that works rather well for us.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve been given? Silvia: My mother has always been a visionary. My father, on the

other hand, was very pragmatic—a great combination. My father was governor, professor, and rector of a university. He used to always say that between the possible and the desirable, one must always choose the possible. I believe that this is why I have always thought of myself as someone who dreams big but is also rooted to the ground; a kind of optimistic realist.

What’s the most challenging and most fulfilling part about working with family? Silvia: I am so proud of what we have accomplished as a family

through work, discipline, and dedication. Of course, one of our challenges is understanding that the brand and the company is our legacy and therefore decisions aren’t solely taken from a financial, marketing, or commercial standpoint, but there is a strong emotional component informing them as well.

Sofia, what do you admire most about your mother? Sofia: Her abundant creativity, discipline, passion, and sense of hu-

mor in everything she does.

Sylvia, what’s the best piece of style advice you’ve passed down to your daughter? Silvia: I have always been pressing that she finds her own personal style as a woman and a designer. I like that she is continuously evolving because fashion is always changing.

How does South Florida style differ from South American style? Silvia: South American women

are a bit more demure and reserved, while South Floridian women are more daring and like to flaunt more. I think it’s more of a cultural matter than anything else.

Silvia, you’re the founder and creative director of Tcherassi hotels in Cartagena, Colombia. If you could design a hotel concept anywhere in the world where would be your dream destination? Silvia: The Caribbean or Mediterranean as I am endlessly inspired by

the views, unique light, the tonalities of the water, the locals, and the gastronomy of each locale. Surely, it’s because I have a strong connection

to both places. However, if an opportunity arose in cities like New York, Milan, Miami, Madrid, or Paris, I wouldn’t think twice about it. I am passionate about them too, and they all have been very meaningful to me. When you have a special relation or familiarity with a certain destination, everything has more substance and significance, which is what happened in Cartagena.

Not-to-miss restaurant in Miami? Silvia: Cipriani Must-have item in your Miami wardrobe? Silvia: A white blouse Must-have item in your Cartagena wardrobe? Silvia: A caftan What excites you most about the fashion industry today? Silvia: History has demonstrated time and again that dark periods are followed by creative renaissance, which is why I look forward to a revival of the industry once we overcome the pandemic. I am eager to see the outcome of great creative collaborations of industry heavyweights like Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons as they serve as evidence of the power of these kinds of partnerships. I am also excited for more women assuming these leadership roles in fashion, for example Maria Grazia Chiuri for Dior—it was about time! This will undoubtedly be heavily influential from a design and marketing point of view.

What current trend are you working into your wardrobe this season?

Sofia: I am exploring abstract prints. What trend would you never embrace? Silvia: Anything that is too short, tight, or see-through. How would you like to see the fashion industry evolve in the next five years? Silvia: I would like to see a streamlined fashion calendar with a greater

presence of independent brands with an original vision as well as a major acceptance of creative perspectives. Sustainability is also critical. We have to be incredibly mindful of the industry’s impact and consumer behavior. Beyond the environment, it is a social and ethical issue.

How has fashion changed from each of your generations? Silvia: There has been a resurgence of the ’80s and ’90s aesthetic, which,

coincidentally, are the decades in which the brand was born and began its expansion—from a design stance, there are a lot of parallels. The industry is what has changed considerably. Tech and social media have had a tremendous impact as has the influence of large fashion conglomerates and fast fashion. All of these factors have reshaped the industry. In addition, inclusion, diversity, and sustainability are top of mind today—which gives me a lot of optimism for the future. «

CELEBRATIONS

Reflections Of By Paul Rubio An illustrious mid-twentieth century past defines the present at Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club in Surfside. With timeless architecture and a hypnotic ambience, the property collectively captures the glamour of a bygone time and the exclusivity of a private club lifestyle circa the 1930s-1950s. The living history peaks over the new “Reflections” cocktail menu at The Champagne Bar, where head bartender Valentino Longo and his superstar team craft transportive libations that speak to The Surf Club’s most iconic social events and celebrations. Take, for example, Carnival in Venice, a modern twist on a house-bottled, Italian spritz–style cocktail (garnished with olive oil–soaked grapes no less), honoring a legendary masquerade party once held at The Surf Club. Likewise, the Dancing Hat, an intoxicating mix of clarified horchata, tequila, and rum, topped with chili-dusted coffee foam, channels the Club’s 1941 Mexi-

can-themed fiesta for the ages. Continue the retro-glam experience at Lido Restaurant, a fellow Joseph Dirand–designed space bejeweled in towering palm fronds and hexagonal, gold-trimmed chandeliers. Here, feast on contemporary interpretations of Italian classics by James Beard Award–winning chef Michael White and revel in a new incarnation of la dolce vita in the Florida tropics. FAMILY TIES The husband-and-wife team of chef Christie Tenaud and sommelier Roberto Colombi express their love for good food, wine, and camaraderie at Union Kitchen & Bar

SONJA GARNITSCHNIG

Christie Tenaud and Roberto Colombi met in 2013 while working at The Blue in Boca Raton. Two kids and eight years From top: Grilled later, the talented duo octopus; rainbow has a new baby: Union carrot salad. Kitchen & Bar in Wilton Manors. Here, Tenaud gives us the scoop on her fabulous new neighborhood spot that reflects her Peruvian heritage and her hubby’s Italian culture. (unionkb.com) —P.R.

Aventura: How did you come up with the concept for Union Kitchen & Bar? Tenaud: We wanted to create an approachable neighborhood restaurant where our guests would return time and again for a great meal and ambience. The concept was inspired by our own union, our shared love of food and wine. Sharing meals around the table is such a huge part of who Roberto and I are. That’s our love language. How did you craft your menu? We created a modern American menu that marries our Peruvian and Italian backgrounds with our prior experiences working in restaurants and travels. We love to serve food that we personally love to cook and eat. What are two can’t-miss items? Go for the homemade porcini campanelle, which pays homage to Roberto’s northern Italian roots. Also, don’t miss the grilled octopus, which I baste in a savory Peruvian marinade. Our regulars come back for these dishes and more. How do your family ties add to the restaurant’s appeal? Union Kitchen & Bar is home to us, and it has that Cheers vibe where everybody knows your name. We get to know all our guests, and, in turn, they get to know our staff and servers. We treat our employees and our guests like family—because they are.

RECIPE

Sliding into 2022 Award-winning chef Todd Erickson shares the recipe for his crave-worthy vegan sliders from his fastcasual Wynwood eatery g.l.o.w., which stands for “Girls Leading Our World.” One hundred percent of net profits benefit charities supporting gender empowerment. (glowforgood.com) —P.R.

IMPOSSIBLE MEATBALL SLIDERS THE “MEAT”BALLS (makes 8) 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup red onions, finely chopped 2 fresh garlic cloves, minced 1 1/2 tbsp. dried oregano leaves 1 tbsp. fennel seeds 1/2 cup Italian parsley, finely chopped 12 oz. Impossible ground burger meat (non-frozen) 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs

86

1/4 cup unsweetened Milkadamia vegan creamer

1 tbsp. kosher salt 1/2 tbsp. freshly cracked black pepper

THE TOPPINGS 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1 cup almond ricotta 2 cups marinara sauce, warmed 8 slider rolls (crusty Italian or brioche) 8-16 sweet basil leaves

DIRECTIONS

Start preparing the meatball mixture by heating olive oil in a 4-quart saucepan and sautéing the red onions until translucent. Add garlic, oregano, fennel seed, and chopped parsley. Sauté until fennel seed is fragrant. Remove from heat and place mixture in the fridge to cool. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground “meat” with panko breadcrumbs, vegan creamer, salt, pepper, and the chilled onion-fennel blend until uniform in appearance. With a small scooper, portion into 8 meatballs and space evenly on parchment-lined cookie sheets. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and bake for 6-8 minutes until meatballs are uniformly brown. To assemble sliders, brush sliced buns with olive oil on both sides. Toast buns on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until lightly browned. Remove and liberally spread almond ricotta on the inner sides of the buns (top and bottom). Place one hot meatball on the bottom half and dress with 1/4 cup marinara, followed by 1-2 basil leaves. Cover with the top half and secure with a cocktail pick.

GOURMAND OFF THE VINE

Italian Superlatives

Nonindigenous grapes continue to enhance the country’s top-tier wines

By Mark Spivak

It all started when Piero Antinori blended some Cabernet into the 1971 vintage of his flagship Chianti Classico to create Tignanello, intentionally violating the archaic Italian wine law. This radical step gave birth to the Super Tuscan revolution and elevated the profile of Italian wine around the world. Today it’s common for international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah to appear in top Italian wines, and the

Super Tuscans are more correctly referred to by the special category they created: IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica). Here, we highlight some of the best.

THE BIG THREE: When the supply of Bordeaux coming into Italy dried up during World War II, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta decided to plant his own Cabernet. The wine from those grapes, Sassicaia ($265), was kept for family consumption and not released to the public until 1968, when it instantly became a cult sensation. Solaia ($375), which Piero Antinori created in 1978 from a vineyard adjacent to Sassicaia, is a blend of 75 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 5 percent Cabernet Franc, and 20 percent Sangiovese. Antinori’s younger brother launched Ornellaia ($250) in 1985, and while the exact blend varies, the wine is generally a combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, CaberClockwise from bottom left: Piero Antinori; vineyards and net Franc, and Petit Verdot. also produces a rare, exotic 100 percent Merlot wine called Masseto ($900). ANOTHER TRIO FROM BOLGHERI: Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli were pioneers in the region, planting the first vines at Le Macchiole in 1983. The winery is now best known for Paleo Rosso ($110), made from 100 percent Cabernet Franc, and Messorio ($215), composed of 100 percent Merlot. The ubiquitous Piero Antinori understood the area’s importance early on, establishing the Guado al Tasso estate in 1990. Located in the Bolgheri Amphitheater—a plain encircled by rolling hillsides facing the Tyrrhenian Sea—the property has earned raves for its eponymous Guado al Tasso ($125) as well as the small-batch, 100 percent Cabernet Franc Matarocchio ($420). Offerings from Ca’Marcanda, Angelo Gaja’s Bolgheri project founded in 1990, begin with Promis ($45, a Merlot/Syrah/Sangiovese blend) and include Magari ($70, Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Petit Verdot) and the flagship Ca’Marcanda (an 80/20 blend of

CHIANTI TRAILBLAZERS: Current law requires Chianti to contain a minimum of 70 percent Sangiovese (80 percent in Chianti Classico), with the rest being either Italian or international varieties. At Isole e Olena in the heart of the region, fourth-generation winemaker Paolo de Marchi is known for Cepparello ($90), his 100 percent Sangiovese IGT. Outside the town of Panzano, the Manetti family has been making wine at Fontodi since 1968; their benchmark bottle, Flaccianello della Pieve ($175), is also composed of 100 percent Sangiovese. The renowned Chianti Classico producer Castello di Ama makes L’Apparita ($220), which is a rich, bold wine that is 100 percent Merlot. Born into an artistic family, the iconoclastic Bibi Graetz, uses only traditional varieties such as Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Colorino to craft Testamatta ($105) and Colore ($415). «

SUPER BARGAINS These wines are no less delicious for being affordable • Brancaia’s Tre ($20) is an easy-to-drink, easy-to-like combination of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. • Le Volte dell’Ornellaia ($30) provides an introduction to Ornellaia’s blend that doesn’t require refinancing the house. • Greppicante ($25), from I Greppi in Bolgheri, is composed of 60 percent Cabernet Sauvi-

gnon, 30 percent Merlot, and 10 percent Cabernet Franc. • Il Bruciato ($30), the silky entry-level wine from Antinori’s Guado al Tasso estate, combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. • Crognolo ($32), from Tenuta Sette Ponti in the heart of Chianti Classico, is a 90/10 blend of Sangiovese and Merlot.
