Cleveland Clinic Donors Making a Difference

Pushing Boundaries in Cardiology Jose Navia, MD, Director of the Heart and Vascular Center and Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida, is all about pushing boundaries. Before taking his talents to the Sunshine State, the pioneering heart surgeon spent two decades at Cleveland Clinic’s main campus, and was a Cleveland Clinic’s Innovator of the Year Award winner. Today, as the first to hold the S. Donald Sussman Distinguished Chair in Heart and Vascular Research, created with a generous gift from financier and philanthropist S. Donald Sussman, Dr. Navia is able to pursue minimally invasive procedures that will benefit cardiovascular patients in South Florida and beyond. “We’re developing new technology for transcatheter heart valve repair and valve replacement that allows us to avoid high-risk surgeries,” he says.

The doctor is also looking to keep hearts pumping with advances in mechanical assist devices: “The number of potential heart donors is flat in the U.S. and around the world. These devices will circumvent the shortage and keep patients alive.” Supporting Dr. Navia’s work was a shrewd move, says Sussman. “In business and in philanthropy, my approach has always been the same: Find brilliant people and back them in ways that lead to the best outcomes.”

Heart disease and stroke claim the lives of more women than all forms of cancer combined, yet many women are unaware of the threat that cardiovascular disease poses to their health. Cleveland Clinic, the top-rated heart program in the United States, has inspired the longtime support of Kathryn and Leo Vecellio, Florida residents and long-standing advocates for Cleveland Clinic Weston. After Kathryn Vecellio’s father had double bypass surgery and she had three aortic valve replacements at Cleveland Clinic, the couple made a generous gift to the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute in 2008. With another gift in 2017, they established the Kathryn C. and Leo A. Vecellio Women’s Cardiology Research Fund, which supports the work of Leslie Cho, MD, Director of Cleveland Clinic’s Women’s Cardiovascular Center. “Their gift allows me to do further research on women and valve disease, specifically mitral valve disease,” says Dr. Cho, who holds the Karos Family Term Chair in Women’s Cardiovascular Research. “The Vecellios’ gift is helping us better define and understand valve disease and its treatment in men and women.”

Covering the Cost of Lifesaving Tests

Last year, nearly 1,000 patients at Cleveland Clinic Martin Health benefited from life-saving lung cancer screenings, thanks to the Caryl Plunkett Hope Fund, which helps patients who can’t afford to pay high deductibles and co-payments. Caryl Plunkett lost her life to lung cancer in 2015.

Her family created the fund in her memory to raise awareness about the prevalence and the impact of lung cancer, which has a 90 percent survival rate if caught early. The fund has helped thousands of patients like Lana, who canceled her screening appointment because she couldn’t afford the co-pay. After a nurse encouraged her to apply for assistance through the Plunkett fund, she qualified to receive two screenings that resulted in a diagnosis of Stage 1A lung cancer. The cancer was caught early and successfully treated, and today she is cancer-free.

As part of the $48M campaign that built and equipped the Scully-Welsh Cancer Center at Cleveland Clinic Indian River, the Pay It Forward Fund was launched by a lead gift from the Bernard Egan Foundation to support patients needing assistance paying for their care.

Embraced by donors across the community, Pay It Forward especially resonated with Indian River caregivers, who raised more than $150K to surpass a matching challenge by the Bernard Egan Foundation, inspiring the foundation to more than match the caregivers’ total. Support for the fund now exceeds $2.2M, largely thanks to the ongoing generosity of the Bernard Egan Foundation. On average, more than 80 Indian River County patients benefit each year from Pay It Forward. Additionally, the fund supports screenings for nearly 400 individuals who are at high risk for cancer.

Outsmarting the Next Viruses In 2020, celebrated virologist Michaela Gack, PhD, moved her lab from Chicago to Port St. Lucie to lead a team of daring virus hunters as the Scientific Director of Cleveland Clinic’s Florida Research and Innovation Center (FRIC). Supported by the Arthur and Marylin Levitt Endowed Chair, Dr. Gack and FRIC scientists are on a mission to outsmart viruses such as mosquito-transmitted Zika and West Nile, wickedly clever pathogens that have learned to trick the body’s immune response, delaying it or escaping detection like a burglar who sneaks into the house after disabling the alarm system. The FRIC’s newest area of research has the potential to be even more game-changing. While broad-spectrum antibiotics such as amoxicillin and tetracycline can be deployed against a wide range of disease-causing bacteria, there are no broad-spectrum antivirals to treat a host of viral invaders, from coronaviruses to the Powassan virus delivered by a bite from a tick.

“They don’t exist,” says Dr. Gack. Trying to develop a specific antiviral treatment for each new virus that emerges is an impossible contest of whack-a-mole on a global scale—we can’t hope to keep up. Dr. Gack has a better idea: With the help of more bold philanthropists, she aims to create “readyto-use” antiviral drugs that target multiple viruses, not just one, before the next deadly pandemic strikes.

UNDER THE SEA If you frequent local markets and craft shows, you’ve likely seen Melissa Kolos selling pieces from her jewelry brand, Mermaid and Me. “Being born and raised in South Florida, I have always felt attached to the beachy lifestyle, and I knew I wanted my brand to reflect that,” says Kolos, who launched the concept in 2015. At the time, she was a junior in high school and needed to utilize her growing collection of seashells in a creative way.

Kolos started making hair barrettes and later transitioned into jewelry. She hosted her first pop-up in 2018 and continued during her summers home from college before going full-time amidst the pandemic. She describes the jewelry as “ocean-inspired with a playful and trendy twist.” Her most popular styles include a cowrie shell necklace, golden shell necklaces, and smiley face bracelets. Eyebrow trends have come and gone over the years—from bold in the 1950s to the barely there brows of the early 2000s. But through the good and the bad, one thing’s remained true: Well-groomed brows never go out of style. Just ask Amanda Lizarazo of Brow Naturel at the Gateway Shopping Center in Fort Lauderdale. “I’m the epitome of my brand name,” she says. “I always try to get somebody to do something naturally [with their eyebrows] before committing to changing it around and playing with the shape in a semi-permanent way.” Before your next visit, we break down three offerings that will help improve your brow game. l BROW DESIGN Lizarazo starts out by mapping and stenciling eyebrows according to each person’s bone structure, leaving them full and symmetrical. From there, she’ll wax everything outside the lines, then further detail by tweezing and trimming.

BROW LAMINATION This is a relaxing treatment—similar to Keratin—that creates a better flow to the brow, makes them more manageable, and gives a fluffier, fuller appearance. This is ideal for those whose eyebrows are dense and only move in one direction. Lamination begins with a coating of lifting cream to remove the hair’s enamel, so that the individual hairs become flexible. The second lotion is a neutralizer that stops the processing, followed by a hydrating cream. This treatment can last for about two to four months, depending on the client’s brows. l

BROW HENNA Henna stains the skin and the hair, creating a long-lasting tint. This is ideal for those whose eyebrows aren’t as dense, are very light, or a little patchy. Lizarazo says she typically uses this as a last resort if one of her other offerings won’t achieve a desired look. Results can last between one to four weeks, depending on eyebrow type.

A Case for ART

Communities are thriving thanks to art in public places

J

ust about every city these days is anchored by art. These creative touches are defining neighborhoods, creating a sense of community, and providing a return on investment for area businesses.

Public art adds to what Maxence Doytier calls the “artification” of a neighborhood—building a more memorable experiential design that heightens interest, inspiration, and creativity.

Doytier is the creative director and art curator behind Twenty6North Productions, a multidisciplinary artist collective, art consultation agency, and event production company in Fort Lauderdale that offers services such as art advisory and consultation, mural design, and more. He’s a driving force behind (and an advocate for) public art in South Florida and beyond.

A recent example is the Steven Teller mural Deluge of Abundance. Doytier worked with The Las Olas Group and Business for the Arts of Broward and commissioned Teller to paint a mural on the west exterior wall of the Hoffman’s Chocolate store.

Teller used an eco-friendly, air-purifying paint to further emphasize the mural’s message of environmental consciousness.

pening. Just ask Jaime Sturgis, the CEO and founder of Native Realty, a real estate agency that focuses on the urban core and emerging neighborhoods throughout South Florida. He commissioned muralist Nice ‘n Easy to beautify his offices’ exteriors with brushstrokes of color.

“What we are best known for, and what is most exciting to us, [are] our placemaking efforts in emerging neighborhoods and helping put them on the map,” shares Sturgis. He’s helped to transform neighborhoods

including Flagler Village, Progresso Village, and Sistrunk, to name a few. “We have a passion for these neighborhoods as they harness the culture and soul of a city,” he adds. “This is where you find the independent and local concepts, creators, and businesses that make that city truly unique.”

Works by talented artists have mushroomed throughout Broward. “Public art and [murals] brighten up the area,” says artist Captain Casual, whose murals can be found across the country. “It gives people something to visually enjoy that they’re not used to seeing otherwise.”

Twenty6North Productions commissioned him to paint a mural at the Plantation Community Center tennis court, which he completed in January. It showcases his interpretation of a more inclusive American flag. “[It] was cool to paint something that people are using and will be an integral part of the community,” Captain Casual says.

“Whether it’s teenagers going to take photos in front of it, girls doing TikTok videos in front of it, families playing tennis [by] it, or even just kids thinking it’s cool and being encouraged by seeing color in the wild, that’s what it’s all about for me.” «

How to lead and benefit from a PLANT-BASED LIFESTYLE

e’ve all heard the trendy term “plant-based” these days, but trying to define exactly what it means seems to be somewhat of a mystery. The truth is if something is plant-based, it could be vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, or even include animal products. The main pillar of the plant-based lifestyle has to do with the ratio of plant-derived foods to animal-derived foods. If you lead a plant-based lifestyle, then you primarily eat plants, with an emphasis on whole, unprocessed foods that are closest to their natural state.

The journalist Michael Pollan—author of such books as In Defense of Food and This is Your Mind on Plants—once said, “Don’t eat anything that won’t

eventually rot.” Not only do processed foods like chips, crackers, cookies, sausages, and cured meats contain staggering amounts of refined sugars, fats, and sodium, but the added chemicals, artificial additives, and preservatives mean that they barely decompose outside the body—making you wonder what impact they have inside the body.

There are ample benefits to a plant-based lifestyle, beginning with a lower risk of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the U.S. Eating a diet higher in healthy, unsaturated fats (like those found in olive oil, avocado, and certain nuts) and less saturated fats (like those in animal products) decreases

cholesterol. In addition, diets high in antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables reduce inflammation, the leading cause of chronic disease.

Eating mostly plants can also mean great things for your waistline and the planet. Because whole fruits and vegetables contain fewer calories than meat, simply crowding out some of the animal products on your plate with more plant-derived foods can help you trim down.

And countless studies have shown that decreasing meat consumption can save vast amounts of water and reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

There are some potential drawbacks of a completely vegan diet. Common nutrient deficiencies associated with

this lifestyle are vitamin B12, iron, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, and vitamin D. However, there are plant-based options to address each one.

For B12, opt for seaweed, sea vegetables, and nutritional yeast.

For iron, go with unprocessed soy, and for zinc, go with lentils, chickpeas, black beans, cashews, quinoa, peas, spinach, and pumpkin seeds. Vegan sources of omega-3 fatty acids include chia seeds, hemp seeds, flax seeds, and walnuts. If you’re in need of some extra calcium, incorporate soybeans, navy beans, black beans, chickpeas, almonds, and sesame seeds into your diet. And two of the best ways to up your vitamin D quota are mushrooms and sunshine.

Using a high-speed blender, combine all ingredients and blend until thick and creamy.

» CHICKPEA-QUINOA BURGER INGREDIENTS (serves 4) 1/3

cup uncooked quinoa

2 garlic cloves, minced

15 oz. chickpeas (1 jar or can), rinsed and drained

1 tsp. cumin

2 tbsp. olive oil, divided

tsp. salt

1 red pepper, diced

tsp. pepper

INGREDIENTS

1 tbsp. tahini

2 shallots, finely chopped

» Bring 1 cup of water and 1/3

cup of quinoa to a boil.

Add lid and simmer for 10-15 minutes until fluffy. Bring 2 cups water and drained chickpeas to a boil, turn off burner and let sit for 5 minutes. Drain chickpeas and let cool.

Add 1 tbsp. olive oil to a cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Add red pepper, shallots, and garlic and sauté for 5 minutes until golden and fragrant.

Using a food processor, blend half of your cooked chickpeas. Gently smash the other half with a fork.

Combine puréed chickpeas, smashed chickpeas, quinoa, sautéed veggies, cumin, tahini, salt, and pepper in a bowl.

Form into 4 patties. Using a cast-iron skillet, heat 1 tbsp. olive oil over medium-high heat. Cook burgers for 3 minutes on each side. Serve in lettuce cups or on the bun of your choice.

» ZUCCHINI FRY INGREDIENTS 1 large zucchini, thinly sliced into rounds using a mandolin 2 tbsp. avocado oil Garlic salt to taste

Using a cast-iron skillet, heat avocado oil over medium-high heat. Add zucchini rounds and sprinkle with garlic salt. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until crispy and golden. (This may take a few batches in your pan.) Remove from pan and let cool on paper towels before serving.

ost within the jungle-cloaked splendor of western Panama’s Gulf of Chiriquí, Islas Secas presents a private island vacation in tune with what modern travelers crave: nextlevel immersion in nature without compromising ultraluxury. ew Orleans boasts a unique charm as diverse as its dialects. Nowhere else will you find street corners radiating with jazz ensembles and dotted with people waiting in line to indulge in fried dough. It’s upbeat and steeped in tradition, with culture aplenty. And now the new Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans stands at the ready to enhance your visit to the Crescent City.

Like much of the city, the property has survived and thrived over the years. Before evolving into the crown jewel it is today, the structure housed the former World Trade Center. A three-year, half-billion-dollar renovation has turned the skyscraper into a modern marvel spanning 34 stories and topped by an observation deck with panoramic views of the city and the Mississippi River.

Lead designer Bill Rooney transformed the interiors to reflect New Orleans’ historic architecture. The 341 guest rooms and suites feature a dramatic focal point above the beds: plaster triptychs depicting magnolias, the official state flower. Bathrooms are clad in white Carrara marble, and a soaking tub is an ideal reprieve after a long day exploring the French colonial

streets. Two Presidential Suites, themed in crimson red and cobalt blue, include a fitness room and butler’s pantry. And the hotel is brimming with local art. Of note is New Orleans–based artist Dawn Dedeaux’s Water Markers New Orleans: A City Below the Sea, which stands in the lobby as a reminder of the post-Katrina floods.

The two on-site restaurants—both helmed

by James Beard Award–winning chefs—capture the state’s cuisine and spirit in distinct ways.

At his 1920s-inspired Miss River, chef Alon Shaya pens a “love letter to Louisiana.” Signature dishes range from a whole carved buttermilk fried chicken to a clay pot of dirty rice with duck

breast, duck egg yolk, and scallions.

Head up to the fifth floor to dine at Chemin à la Mer, which translates to “pathway to the sea.”

Chef Donald Link’s upbringing along the waterways of Southwest Louisiana inform the offerings at this sophisticated steak house, which folds in flavors from the West Indies and neighboring regions. Here, specialty steaks reign supreme, including an immaculate côte de boeuf for two carved tableside. And what’s a trip to New Orleans without some fresh seafood? Order from the grand oyster bar or dig into Ora King salmon accompanied by French lentils.

After sampling the thrills of New Orleans’ nightlife, end the evening at the Four Seasons’ Chandelier Bar. The boat of choice for NFL superstar Tom Brady is a Dutch-built Wajer

By Howard Walker Call it the Brady Factor. Before a slightly tipsy Tom Brady famously tossed the Vince Lombardi trophy from boat to boat during the post– Super Bowl floating victory parade through downtown Tampa last year, few U.S. boaters knew about Wajer. But when the former Tampa Bay Bucs quarterback turned up to the party in his silvery-blue, $2 million, 53-foot Wajer power yacht, the world collectively asked, “What the heck kind of boat is that?”

It’s a Wajer 55 S from the young Dutch builder Wajer Yachts. Dorus Wajer started the company—which is based in Holland’s ancient Friesland region—in 1992, 42

and it has steadily grown to become one of the favored boutique builders for Europe’s jet set. These days, it’s hard to stand on Quai de l’Epi in St. Tropez’s old port or Port Hercule in Monaco and not see a stunning Wajer 55 or its smaller Wajer 38 sibling gliding by, filled with sunkissed revelers.

The 55 was introduced in 2016 as a closed-bow model, which Wajer still offers. The more versatile 55 S center console came a couple years later, followed more recently by the 55 HT with an enclosed hardtop.

Dutch masters Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design penned each version, all of which boast the same gorgeous hull design, with its knifeedge bow, uncluttered decks, and trademark inward-curving stern. And if Sinot sounds familiar, there’s a reason: It’s the same company behind Musashi, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison’s window-rich, 288-foot superyacht.

Among the 55’s multitude of cool features, one of the best is the grand staircase rising from the swim platform. Another is the deep, wide-side decks that make moving around the boat safe and easy.

The 55 also includes a nicely sized hardtop, with a big, tall windshield for good forward visibility. There are removable glass panels in the top to throw down plenty of light, and at the press of a button, a power sunshade whirrs out of the back of the hardtop to cover part of the rear deck. At the helm station you’ll find a quartet of comfy Stidd captain’s seats, plus two sleek Garmin navigation screens.

The bow is ideal for sun worshippers, with its sunpad in front of the

windshield and a cozy sofa for two. And Wajer has cleverly created space in the sides of the hull to stow a couple of Seabob electric underwater scooters.

But the back deck is where the action will be. Here, behind the helm, awaits an outdoor galley, with a grill, fridge, and icemaker. For alfresco dining, there’s an almost full-width table with seats for up to eight. Behind that is a massive, aft-facing sunpad for some serious tanning.

Below decks, there’s decent space for four to crash in comfort for an overnight or weekend cruise. In addition to a forward queen berth and two singles tucked under the helm, there’s a small but efficient bathroom on the starboard side.

Silvia, you began your career as an interior designer. What influenced your decision to cross over into fashion?

Silvia: Since I was little, I have always been

attracted to all things fashion and aesthetics.

But, at the moment of choosing a career, I went for interior design where I was able to grasp an understanding of color, volumes, and textures.

I was already working on my first projects when fashion resurfaced in my life. The experimentation was a successful one from the start, and so I decided to focus on it completely. That being said, both my vision and philosophy on fashion and interiors are the same: casual luxury that is never excessive or pretentious.

Often the worlds of interior design and fashion intersect. How does each influence the other in your collections?

Silvia: I have always thought that the bound-

aries between these two disciplines are almost imperceptible: The founding principles are the same, as well as that search for balance between form and function that always per-

meates the creative process. I approach the female form and spaces as a sort of blank canvas—always keeping in mind that both have the power to communicate and reflect the personality of whomever inhabits the space or is wearing a piece.

Your collections are known for their Colombian craftsmanship and modern designs. How does that make them stand out?

Silvia: I have always been guided by a defined

vision and the quest for a natural, effortless elegance, which I feel is ultimately the differentiating factor in my collections and one that gives my pieces a timeless quality. Women who are inclined to my designs are after garments that are special and unique, as opposed to just wearing the trends of the season.

What inspires you when designing a new collection?

Silvia: Inspiration can come from anywhere,

but more importantly, one must be able to capture and express it in their own language. Of course, there are recurring themes of inspiration

like art and architecture. I have been moved by the pioneering works of women like Charlotte Perriand, Frida Kahlo, Anne Truitt, and Louise Bourgeois—they have all influenced my designs in one way or another.

Sofia, what was the defining moment when you knew you wanted to join forces with your mother?

Sofia: I can’t remember a specific moment; my earliest memory was

being present at my mother’s fashion shows or draping fabrics over mannequins as a child. Going to Parsons felt like a natural next step, as did joining the company. I don’t think I have ever contemplated another work environment.

Individually, how do you each influence the Silvia Tcherassi brand?

Silvia: My primary function as founder and creative director for the

brand is to keep my original vision and DNA going, but to make it evolve and resound with the present to maintain its relevancy.

Sofia: I like to think I bring a fresh perspective as well as formidable and varied work experience to the table. As much as I respect tradition and admire the company’s legacy, being from a completely different generation is a factor that definitely influences my outlook on fashion as a whole.

What’s your secret to successfully mixing professional and personal lives?

Silvia: For us, there is no limit between one or the other and we thor-

oughly enjoy what we do—our work and the company is our greatest passion. Since my kids were born and grew up in this world it all feels completely natural to them.

Sofia: We have a great relationship rooted in respect—she has always been the most important role model in my life. Working alongside my mother is synonymous to constant growth and has provided me with a valuable education. As for the separation of work and personal matters, it really does not exist—both are enmeshed and I think that works rather well for us.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve been given?

Silvia: My mother has always been a visionary. My father, on the

other hand, was very pragmatic—a great combination. My father was governor, professor, and rector of a university. He used to always say that between the possible and the desirable, one must always choose the possible. I believe that this is why I have always thought of myself as someone who dreams big but is also rooted to the ground; a kind of optimistic realist.

What’s the most challenging and most fulfilling part about working with family?

Silvia: I am so proud of what we have accomplished as a family

through work, discipline, and dedication. Of course, one of our challenges is understanding that the brand and the company is our legacy and therefore decisions aren’t solely taken from a financial, marketing, or commercial standpoint, but there is a strong emotional component informing them as well.

Sofia, what do you admire most about your mother?

Sofia: Her abundant creativity, discipline, passion, and sense of hu-

mor in everything she does.

Sylvia, what’s the best piece of style advice you’ve passed down to your daughter?

Silvia: I have always been pressing that she finds her own personal style as a woman and a designer. I like that she is continuously evolving because fashion is always changing.

How does South Florida style differ from South American style?

Silvia: South American women

are a bit more demure and reserved, while South Floridian women are more daring and like to flaunt more. I think it’s more of a cultural matter than anything else.

Silvia, you’re the founder and creative director of Tcherassi hotels in Cartagena, Colombia. If you could design a hotel concept anywhere in the world where would be your dream destination?

Silvia: The Caribbean or Mediterranean as I am endlessly inspired by

the views, unique light, the tonalities of the water, the locals, and the gastronomy of each locale. Surely, it’s because I have a strong connection

to both places. However, if an opportunity arose in cities like New York, Milan, Miami, Madrid, or Paris, I wouldn’t think twice about it. I am passionate about them too, and they all have been very meaningful to me. When you have a special relation or familiarity with a certain destination, everything has more substance and significance, which is what happened in Cartagena.

Must-have item in your South Florida wardrobe?

Silvia: History has demonstrated time and again that dark periods are followed by creative renaissance, which is why I look forward to a revival of the industry once we overcome the pandemic. I am eager to see the outcome of great creative collaborations of industry heavyweights like Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons as they serve as evidence of the power of these kinds of partnerships. I am also excited for more women assuming these leadership roles in fashion, for example Maria Grazia Chiuri for Dior—it was about time! This will undoubtedly be heavily influential from a design and marketing point of view.

What current trend are you working into your wardrobe this season?

Sofia: I am exploring abstract prints.

What trend would you never embrace?

Silvia: Anything that is too short, tight, or see-through.

How would you like to see the fashion industry evolve in the next five years?

Silvia: I would like to see a streamlined fashion calendar with a greater

presence of independent brands with an original vision as well as a major acceptance of creative perspectives. Sustainability is also critical. We have to be incredibly mindful of the industry’s impact and consumer behavior. Beyond the environment, it is a social and ethical issue.

How has fashion changed since you launched your brand?

Silvia: There has been a resurgence of the ’80s and ’90s aesthetic, which,

coincidentally, are the decades in which the brand was born and began its expansion—from a design stance, there are a lot of parallels. The industry is what has changed considerably. Tech and social media have had a tremendous impact as has the influence of large fashion conglomerates and fast fashion. All of these factors have reshaped the industry. lexandra Grief stood on the shore of a Costa Rican beach and watched as a young woman glided across the waves. “All the guys were talking about her—‘Montce this, Montce that,” Grief recalls. “She was this little mermaid, surfer girl.” Grief had been searching for a name for the swimwear brand she was about to launch, and the way everyone kept repeating “Montce,” the girl’s name, felt like a sign.

It’s a good thing Grief was listening; since launching Montce Swim more than a decade ago, her pieces have been worn by A-listers like Jennifer Lopez, Kendall Jenner, Emily Ratajkowski, Chrissy Teigen, Kourtney Kardashian, and Gabrielle Union. But, in the beginning, the brand was a best-kept local secret, donned by those in-the-know who would stop by her Fort Lauderdale apartment to get measured for custom swimsuits between Grief’s bartending shifts.

Grief studied fashion design at The Art Institute and worked as an intern with a designer in New York City, but when she was entering the workforce in 2009, the economy was reeling in the wake of the recession. quaint and kind of like a little secret spot with this cool, old Florida vibe,” she says.

The storefront brought in a whole new clientele that extended beyond friends of friends, and the momentum continued to build as Grief attended trade shows and said “yes” to every invitation to present at fashion shows and local pop-ups. In 2018, she and her brother, Devin Grief, who had become her business partner, opened the Montce Swim storefront in Flagler Village on Northeast Second Avenue.

But, about a year from now, Montce’s address is going to change once again—this time to Northeast Thirteenth Street. Grief says she’s still conceptualizing the brandnew boutique, but her “raw idea” is to open the shop in tandem with a Mexican-style outdoor café/space for yoga or meditation classes. She’s also building the Montce collection beyond mix-and-match bikinis to include more cover-ups, activewear, and—now that Grief is a mother to a 2-year-old boy—bathing suits for little ones.

While plenty of brands are transitioning to an e-commerce-only business model, having a local brick-andmortar outpost is important to Grief so shoppers can try on her designs in person. After all, playing with different fabric, pattern, and style combinations in search of that seemingly effortless aesthetic is the essence of Montce. «

swimline just “to stay relevant so that I could get a job in fashion and keep building my portfolio,” she says.

Grief never landed a job at a fashion house. Rather, she created her own. “I was inspired by the surf industry and smaller-cut, mix-and-match bikinis in Costa Rica that weren’t really a thing here yet; they were small, skimpy, fun, and kind of carefree,” she says. She developed a few signature styles, including removing elastic bands for what Grief calls “maximum flattery.”

As she booked more and more consultations with clients who wanted bespoke bathing suits, Grief was finally able to quit her bartending job and open an official retail store off of East Sunrise Boulevard in 2011. “It was really 52

The Tori bandeau top, for example, can be worn strapless and has a ruched material that creates the illusion of a larger chest.

BOTTOMS Women who want to create an hourglass look can try the Uno bottoms that have ruffles on the sides or the Tamarindo bottoms, which “have a little skirt situation so it really adds volume and flair.”

To add extra length to legs, the Lulu bottoms can be pulled up over the hips and worn like an ’80s-style suit.

Meanwhile, the Paula tie-up high-rise bottoms or the Kim one-piece with a flattering belt detail can be worn to direct the eyes to the waistline.

When it comes to trying on swimsuits, Grief advises clients to “think about the things you really like about yourself” and look for the pieces that will accentuate those features. Trying on swimsuits can be a sensitive process, and Grief often sees women during their most vulnerable moments. Whether they’re in a hurry or having a low self-esteem day, Grief says a lot of times shoppers can become frustrated when trying on a bunch of suits. Her best advice?

“Come back when you’re in the mood.”

Locals who have missed dining and imbibing against one of the most scenic backdrops on the Fort Lauderdale strip are heralding the new Dune—now with a Michelin-starred chef leading the way. This past winter, Laurent Tourondel joined the Auberge Beach Residences & Spa to revamp its existing dining offering into Dune by Laurent Tourondel. Renovations to the dining room and outdoor space set the scene for a culinary celebration of life by the sea, says Tourondel.

“It’s an elevated yet approachable seafood grill dining experience celebrating global flavors and best-in-class ingredients amid an energetic, stylized environment that will make you feel like you’re on a chic vacation,” he continues.

The menu features a nigiri menu that also encompasses crispy rice and specialty rolls such as hamachi and jalapeño wrapped with grated ginger, yuzu guacamole, and a soy glaze. Starters vary from a crispy Parmesan souffle stuffed with prosciutto, mustard greens, and a truffle vinaigrette to an array of flatbreads. From there, guests can choose between land and sea options. Dishes of note include grilled bigeye tuna, served rare and accompanied by roasted beets and swiss chard with a lemon-saffron aioli, as well as grilled Australian lamb chops with haricot vert, oregano, and polenta cake with tomato concasse. Our patio offers world-class panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. There is nothing quite like dining in the Florida sunshine against the cool, relaxing breeze and experiencing some of the best cuisine in the world.

As a Michelin-starred chef, what do you feel you bring to the Fort Lauderdale food scene?

We designed the dining experience intentionally to be memorable yet approachable and easy to experience several times a week, whether it’s happy hour, dinner, or just because. While I am thankful for past accolades and achievements, I don’t believe what makes a restaurant successful is a Michelin star. It’s said that while American street artist and art activist Keith Haring was studying at the Ivy School of Professional Art (now the Art Institute) in Pittsburgh, the then 19-year-old visited what’s now known as the Carnegie Museum of Art. There, he encountered a retrospective of works by Pierre Alechinsky, a Belgian painter who is the last surviving member of the European avant-garde art movement known as Cobra.

Throughout his career, Haring credited this poignant memory as a time that brought him a “rush of confidence.” Seeing similar motifs and styles between Alechinsky’s work and his own assured Haring that he was doing something “worthwhile.” To celebrate these two dynamic artists and their influences, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale is presenting “Keith Haring and Pierre Alechinsky.” On view through October 2, the exhibition explores the historic and visual intersections between Alechinsky, now 94, and Haring, who passed away in 1990.
