ASK

AN AESTHETICIAN

We know we’re supposed to create (and maintain) a skin care regimen. But let’s face it: It’s hard to know what helps and what’s just hype. To get the story straight, FLI caught up with Brian David Douglas, director of spa and recreation at Conrad Fort Lauderdale, for his insight into some of our most pressing questions. (conradfortlauderdale.com)

FLI: How often does someone need to get a facial?

Douglas: Our skin cells go through a life cycle of four to six weeks, and during a facial, we are treating the outermost layer of skin. If you have normal, healthy skin, a monthly facial is a great boost to your skin care regimen. If you are treating a condition such as acne or dark spots, your aesthetician may suggest a treatment plan that’s more frequent at first then trails off as goals are achieved.

Is there any way to reduce the look of bags under the eyes?

Absolutely! We’ve all seen the spa images of cucumber slices over the eyes, and it’s not just for show. Cold compresses like cool cucumber slices help to constrict the blood vessels and move out the excess fluid. Topical eye serums with caffeine also do wonders to depuff and help with dark circles.

Do jade rollers and gua sha tools really work?

Not only do they work, but they are also very relaxing. Your face gets a little lift, and your mood will as well.

What should we do if we find a pimple right before a big night out or a key meeting with clients?

Start with a face wash with salicylic acid and a charcoal or mud mask to soak up excess oil. Follow that with an overnight drying lotion, which is a must-have spot treatment addition to your medicine cabinet.

Is there any way to make pores look smaller?

Definitely! Dirt, oil, and buildup from leftover makeup can all make pores appear larger. Cleansing your face twice a day along with using a gentle exfoliant will help unclog the pores. I also use a clay sea mud mask weekly to keep the oil under control.

When do you recommend clients get Botox?

When the wrinkles make you unhappy. That’s why I got Botox a couple weeks ago! Botox and fillers can do wonders for deep lines and wrinkles, but keep in mind they do nothing for the condition of the skin. You still need an appropriate skin care regimen to keep the skin healthy and bright.

Anything else to note?

Please, please use sun protection!
