In GIA’s history, very few polished diamonds of gem quality have surpassed the 100-carat mark. Already part of an elite group due to its size, the highly transparent nature of this diamond adds to its rarity. This pure diamond is classified as type IIa which scientifically means it is lacking measurable levels of impurities like nitrogen, thus giving this diamond its pure white color.

This diamond was fashioned into a classic old world cushion cut, with its smaller table and open culet. Its faceting bears resemblance to other world-renowned diamonds, such as the 45.52 carat Blue Hope Diamond and the 105 carat Koh-I-Nur.

FROM THE EDITOR

Conscious about

Ask anyone. Calling myself a Floridian has been a lifelong goal. After spending a year in Fargo, North Dakota, and 12 long winters in Michigan, who can blame me for coveting our lulling palm trees, subtropical flora and fauna, magnificent beaches, and of course, warm temps? In my estimation, these are the ecological differentiae that attract many folks to Southwest Florida. Apropos is the sobriquet “Paradise Coast.” Even in paradise, however, there are environmental challenges, and—pardon my candor—it would be naïve to think otherwise. The good news is, there are devoted advocates, caring and generous philanthropists, countless volunteers, and others catalyzing solutions that preserve, protect, and restore the regional lands we love, including the precious Everglades. This edition of Naples Illustrated, which we’ve named “The Conservation Issue,” showcases a handful of these dedicated individuals and explores pressing environmental challenges—from surf to turf. First is a look at water quality and quantity issues in South Florida and a few of the people and organizations working to remedy crucial hydrologic concerns. I can’t express how edifying writing this piece was for me. From restoring natural water flows to combating high nutrient loads that fuel both blue-green algae and red tide to stemming saltwater intrusion, here’s hoping the topics touched upon create more awareness about the contributors affecting our water quality while highlighting the good work of some important regional “water warriors.” Read more starting on page 74. For the lay of the land on reforestation efforts in the Naples area, turn to page 82. Trees provide shade and beauty; they also create habitats for wildlife, deter erosion, and mitigate the effects of climate change—among other benefits. Following Hurricane Irma in 2017, the City of Naples alone lost nearly 2,000 trees. Local philanthropists Rob and Cathy Funderburg in partnership with the Collier Community Foundation have helped to grow Collier Trees, an initiative that’s invested $450,000 to plant 507 mostly native trees across local landscapes. Also featured is Grace Evenstad, another Neapolitan answering the conservation call. Her efforts and generosity—along with leadership from the Naples Botanical Garden—are behind the site-prep work for the 66,000-square-foot Evenstad Horticulture Campus, which will feature specialized greenhouses and nurseries for growing plants, laboratories, and a seed bank representing rare and threatened species. Our issue would fall short if we didn’t provide some well-appointed fun. For this, we bring you the tale of 10 catamarans. As seacrafts go, these vessels are highly efficient and being constructed more and more sustainably by the year, with some being powered by solar energy. Read more about these cool cats, starting on page 98. We indeed live in paradise. Together, let’s protect, preserve, restore, and enjoy it. Cordially and consciously,

A photography protégé at a young age, a classically trained saxophonist, and a mainstay on Florida’s art festival circuit as a teen, the Marco Island native has enjoyed an accomplished professional career beyond his 26 years. Piqued by an interest to learn guitar, MacDonald started making them three years ago. Today, Tyler Mac custom-made, fine-art electric guitars sell for upward of $12,000. —Nanci Theoret Turn the page for a Q&A with Tyler MacDonald to learn about his muses and creative process.

NI: How did you know art was your calling? MacDonald: I’ve always liked to explore different creative mediums. I taught myself photography when I was 8 and started selling my photographs at art festivals when I was 13. I’ve never had a real job. I’m lucky in that way and grateful I’ve been able to sustain myself since. I wouldn’t fit into a normal job. I didn’t partake in high school things because I was working art festivals all over the state of Florida. I was focused on building my life as an artist.

Traditionally, guitar luthiers served apprenticeships to master their skills. How did you learn? YouTube. I’ve had no professional training. It took six months of trial and error before I had a guitar I could play. Now I build seven days a week, two or three guitars a month. Describe your creative process. Different types of wood have a different feel and visual design. Some are exotic and wild looking. My favorite is cocobolo because it’s an extremely dense wood with nice tonal properties and reds and purples. I import exotic wood from around the world and use as many as 10 different species that complement each other on some of my guitars. I also source wood locally, using trees downed by hurricanes. People don’t realize there’s a lot of mahogany in Florida. I just got

back from a little town in Colorado where I sourced a 200-year-old elm tree. What kind of feedback do you receive? People are impressed. I get great response because guitars are an unusual thing to see at an art show. Buyers are players and collectors who hang the guitars on the wall. I’ve won quite a few awards for photography and won my first in October for guitars: best in show at the St. James Court Art Show in Louisville, Kentucky. As an artist, is it difficult to part with your art? I do get attached to some guitars and have my own private collection. It’s a personal thing. Because they’re handmade, there are slight variations between them. What’s next? I recently started a band, the Groovy Gypsies. It just fell in my lap like a lot of things I do. I have a spiritual outlook on life. I’m also working on two guitars—a double-neck guitar and an acoustic guitar, which is new for me. The wood really shines in acoustic. (tylermac.com) —N.T.

Kipp Schulties Golf Design is leading major renovations for both of Vineyards Country Club’s 18-hole championship golf courses—the first since opening 30 years ago. Revitalization at the South Course, which has hosted PGA Tour Champions events, will begin in April 2023, with the North Course following in 2024. The yardage of both courses will be expanded from the professional tees, greens will be rebuilt and enlarged, and fairways will be recontoured to enhance playability and pace of play, according to Vineyards Co-owner Michael Procacci Jr. These renovations are the latest in a series of extensive structural and aesthetic upgrades at the 1,600-member club. The 2,700-home community in North Naples opened in 1988. —Cathy Chestnut

he future is bright for the Naples Historical Society’s Historic Palm Cottage since the next-door property was purchased to protect the street’s character and expand historical exhibits. The society purchased the 1,530-square-foot, ranchstyle home at 163 Twelfth Avenue South and its 1935 guest cottage after owner Bill Darragh offered the nonprofit a right of first refusal to purchase the spread for $4.2 million in March 2021. Since then, the society has raised more than $3.7 million toward the project. Supporters Stephen B. and Mary S. Smith—chair emeritus of the society’s board of directors—provided a $1 million matching grant. The society has raised more than $3.7 million during the past year and is selling inscribed brick pavers ($300) to extinguish the mortgage and fund $300,000 in redevelopment costs. The plan is to create 1,000-square-feet of new exhibits in the new house—Smith Exhibit Hall—and an exterior pathway (made with the bricks) featuring “history stations” chronicling Naples’ history and the decades-old fruit trees gracing the property. Society Chief Executive Officer Elaine Reed is thrilled that residents have come together to prevent the development of a dominating mansion on the adjacent property. “It is rare for a homeowner to buy an expensive parcel of land and not want to have their dream house built on it. That’s the challenge of historic rehabilitation in Naples,” she says. “This project is a true community opportunity, a life-time legacy.” The project is expected to be completed by fall 2023. —C.C.

ON DISP Y Starting on June 21, a pelican figurehead and human statue created by native people will go on display for the first time in Southwest Florida at the Marco Island Historical Museum. They join 16 other pre-Columbian Native American artifacts, dating from 500 to 1200 A.D., unearthed on Marco Island during an 1896 Smithsonian archaeological expedition. The exhibit’s wolf, pelican, and deer figureheads are being loaned on a rotating basis due

to their fragility. The wooden figureheads are believed to be ceremonial objects used by the island’s early Calusa or Muspa peoples. They are on loan from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology for display through April 30, 2024. The world-famous Key Marco Cat—a 6-inch statue on loan from the Smithsonian Institution—will remain at the museum through 2026. (themihs.org) —C.C.

STYLE setting for some of the materials I like to use. Which design icons have influenced your work? I wouldn’t say David Bowie is necessarily a design icon, but he’s a theater icon, and the way I see it, theater and design are interchangeable. Bob Fosse as well.

What’s a favorite nontraditional material you like to work with? The two stones that I use most are natural pearls and agate (I would consider those to be nontraditional). They appear in the vast majority of my recent work. We also work with chicken eggshells that I source from my own chickens on my farm in Dutchess County, New York. If you could design a piece of jewelry for anyone, who would it be? In the real world, I have created pieces of jewelry for my godmother, Barbara Eden. She’s a wonderful model and inspiration, such a kind and beautiful woman. I was able to play upon the theme of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves in the pieces that I’ve made for her. Beyond that, Ginger from Gilligan’s Island would be a favorite because I’ve always had an attachment to Old Hollywood and the tropics. Many of the pieces I’ve made recently have included petrified palm tree and natural pearls. I think that show is a great 44

CAPEHART

When and where did your love of jewelry design begin? On a trip to Gstaad, Switzerland, when I was 11 years old. My father and I went through that beautiful town and bought a ring for my mother that he ultimately gave her on Christmas morning. The combination of travel, grand luxury, and the loving environment that it engendered was a very strong hook for me.

REAL TALK WITH...

Nicholas Varney

The ARTISAN JEWELER discusses inspiration, materials, and more BY KATHERINE LANDE Varney uses such materials as pearls and agate.

The way he changed the perception of the human body on stage is a major influence. Really, iconoclasts in general. Miles Davis and his unique ability to put sensuality and romance in jazz music was a revelation to me. What is your favorite travel destination and why? My favorite travel destination is Istanbul. I’ve made a point to imbue my jewelry with a distinct yin-yang feel. The body of work, I hope, possesses a range of interests. I emphasize the obvious precious stones that we have all come to think of when dreaming of jewelry, but as important are the more modest materials that are rarely or never included in the vernacular of ultra-fine jewelry. It’s the conflict in the pieces that, I believe, makes the work relevant at this point in American history. Istanbul is a city, because of geographic location and its own history, that has that inherent conflict of influence present in all its art forms. It’s a magical place. History is very important.

DESIGN

“De-Tuscanized” Transformation

Makeovers to undo Mediterranean design are a major trend in Naples By Mary Thurman Yuhas | Photography by Giovanni Photography

Seasonal homeowners were thrilled with the exceptional Venetian Bay location for their recently acquired two-story home. They weren’t so excited, however, with its Tuscan design¾—a legacy of the Mediterranean architectural trend that reigned supreme in Collier County two decades ago. The 5,158-square-foot estate was overwhelmed with heavy Tuscaninspired exterior features and dark interior finishes and columns, which were the exact opposite of the open and airy transitional style the pair desired. Undeterred, the energetic duo bought the home because the wife has a knack for finding homes that have the potential to be transformed into modern masterpieces while her husband works full time as a business owner. This renovation in Naples wasn’t their first, and they were ready to take on its many challenges. NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY/JUNE 2022

Clockwise from above: In the living room, a weighty, marble fireplace was replaced with a stacked-stone fireplace wall and waterfront views were opened; the living room before the transformation; the breakfast nook is part of the open, airy floorplan, providing serene views.

Serendipitously, the wife read in a local magazine about Nan Wright, founder and chief creative director of Wright Interior Group, and reached out to the award-winning interior designer who has the penchant for and experience of “de-Tuscanizing” homes. The Naples-based designer set about analyzing the property and charting the course of its transformation. “We could have torn the house down to the bones. That would have been easy¾—but really expensive,” Wright says. “It had a good layout and a three-car garage, so we didn’t. Instead, we looked at every aspect and essentially stripped the home down to its bare elements to make it work functionally and aesthetically for our clients.”

EXTERIOR FACE-LIFT

Architect Mario Suarez and contractor Santana Vasquez of All-In Building Group executed the project. The new owners have six grown children and 18 grandchildren¾—a passel who gather in Naples each year for a week-long visit¾—so programming for family was a critical element of the makeover. Hosting out-of-town visitors, both children and friends from the north, is a reg50

No room or finish was left untouched to make way for brighter, modern living spaces. Marble columns (at right) were squared and travertine tile floors were replaced with easyto-maintain porcelain tile. The dining room was completely redesigned with a floor-to-ceiling wine wall and kidand pet-friendly upholstery and rug.

ular occurrence, too. Redesigning the facade’s dramatic overhang presented the first major challenge in the renovation. “Some structural rework was required to change the shape of the windows,” Wright says. “We also removed the precast molding (typically foam or cast concrete) from around the house. That helped clean and streamline the front entry.” Transitional corbels and Bahama shutters further softened the look. The front door was widened to 10 feet by adding a 2-foot transom and a new, hurricane-rated glass panel, which not only updated the facade but brightened the interior. Lastly, a coat of light-colored paint completed the transformation from Old World castle to subtropical retreat.

OUT WITH THE OLD WORLD

Throughout the home, heavy columns were eliminated and decorative ornamentation was stripped away, along with many interior finishes, Wright says. “We didn’t move a lot of walls,” she says. “We removed the travertine tile and replaced it with an easily maintained, wood-like porcelain tile. Everything in the home was touched.” A black, wood-and-chrome chandelier in the foyer makes a grand entrance statement. In the living room, the weighty marble fireplace wall was replaced with a white, stacked-stone, linear fireplace wall. Adding sliding glass doors greatly enhanced the flow between the inside and outside living areas. “We modified the living room ceiling details to make the space consistent with the rest of the home. There were odd little ceilings all over the house,” the designer recalls. Bearing little resemblance to the dark space it once was, the kitchen features repainted cabinetry, hand-blown glass pendants, and 3-inch thick quartz countertops accented by a herringboneNAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY/JUNE 2022

patterned Calcutta marble backsplash. Missing is the heavy hood that once reigned over the cooktop—now replaced with a stainlesssteel KitchenAid canopy. Chairs in the charming, informal dining space are covered with a gray-and-white performance fabric. “We added a charcoal accent band around cabinets to tie them in with the island,” notes Wright. Faux finishes, copious amounts of marble, and as many pillars as possible were removed from the embellished formal dining space. Two remaining load-bearing columns were squared and extended from 7 feet to 9 1/2 feet high. Wine stored on the stunning glass wine wall is supported by cables attached to the ceiling and floor. Kidproof upholstered chairs—rather than intricately carved mahogany thrones—and a family- and pet-friendly rug make the formal dining area inviting to all visitors. At the wet bar, a wall with an abundance of unneeded cabinetry was removed, opening a multimillion-dollar view of the water that was not previously enjoyed. The home in Park Shore is located at the end of a canal, with panoramic daytime vistas and shimmering night-time views of Naples. The outdoor living area is the couple’s favorite spot to relax and where they spend most of their time. An exquisite natural shell stone on the pool deck surrounds the free-form, infinity pool that Wright imbued with glass tiles. Just like they were modified indoors, round columns were squared and simplified. “This is a great home for family and for entertaining,” says Wright. « 52

Climate Control

Top left and inset: Renson Camargue structures’ roofs have articulating louvers that open and close at the touch of a button. Below: Shade retreat with automated side screens

BRING IT ON: Wind, rain, and mid-day heat are no match for customized outdoor shade structures By Nanci Theoret Being in the shade can make temperatures feel 10 to 15 degrees cooler because you’re not exposed to direct sunlight and ultraviolet rays. And that’s a good thing for those of us unwilling to give up our outdoor lifestyle during Naples’ hot summers. Local homeowners are controlling their climate at the push of a button, thanks to the latest warm-weather invention to hit Florida’s shores since air conditioning and swimming pools: permanent shade systems fashioned from powder-coated aluminum. Introduced to Naples five years ago by GWT Outdoors, a luxury boutique company specializing in outdoor shading, residents are taming sun, rain, wind, and cold with stylish aplomb. The all-season structures—reminiscent of a pergola but with louvered, waterproof roofs—are beginning to replace umbrellas, awnings, and even screened lanais. “When we started, these structures were new to the market,” says Jason Wyatt, GWT Outdoors’ director of business development. “Although they’d been popular in Europe for a while, no one was aware shade on a patio 56

could be controlled to this degree. You can feel the temperature difference.” COLOR, DESIGN, AND TECH INTEGRATION OPTIONS The popular hurricane-rated Camargue series made by Belgium-based Renson is popping up in elegant backyards everywhere, shading portions of pools and outdoor seating areas and creating brand-new, swoonworthy alfresco destinations like outdoor dining areas with grills, fireside venues, or a place to simply chill out. Flat, louvered roofs tilt to welcome more sun and breezes or close for shade with the look of a tongue-and-groove ceiling. Renson’s new Camargue Skye elevates the collection to the next level with adjustable, rotating roof blades that also slide open. “Everybody loves them,” Wyatt says. “The system gives people more outdoor area they can enjoy without being hammered by sun and rain.” Custom-designed by the GWT Outdoors team and made to order in Europe “to the nearest millimeter,” the structures feature the mini-

malist styling of contemporary design and can be attached to a home or built freestanding with columns. They’re available in more than 2,500 colors and are customized through automated options to integrate lighting, fans, heaters, and wind and rain sensors that automatically respond to changing weather conditions. Sliding walls of glass, wood, and aluminum blades, wind-tight screens, and Renson’s noise-reducing Linius linear horizontal panels create outdoor rooms.

“We offer all the things that matter: options, bona fide rain protection, and shade,” says Wyatt. “The louvers are pitched to get water moving to internal gutters to prevent rain from falling on your furniture when they’re opened after it rains. You can leave furniture out when it rains, and you don’t have to wheel in an umbrella every season.” GWT—an acronym for owner Stuart Sheppard’s original Greenwich Window Treatments in Connecticut—expanded to Naples as the second Renson dealer in the U.S. and opened a showroom in The Collective in May 2021. Sheppard “found Renson at a trade show and thought it was a great product for Naples,” says Wyatt. “Ten percent of Renson’s staff works in research and development. They’re always on the cutting edge and the quality is top-notch. That’s why we like them.” GWT has partnered with Hardie Boys, a Florida millwork company, to develop a hybrid solution for incorporating the high-end wood look of Hardie Boys’ durable, architectural PVC products with Renson systems. “Our customers get the benefit of a West Indiesstyle pergola with rafter tails,” Wyatt says. He adds: “We’re creating outdoor spaces from the ground up. Everyone is improving where they live and, with COVID, people want to spend more time outside.” «

CASTLE HOT SPRINGS Arizona’s first wellness resort (established 1896) returns in fabulous new form on the grounds of the original, anchored by extraordinary natural assets and rooted in the type of mindful and high-end experiences today’s travelers crave. Say hello to the new Castle Hot Springs, an oasis of 34 sleek cabins and bungalows strewn across 1,110 acres in the Bradshaw Mountains (an hour north of Phoenix) and centered around a series of thermal hot springs etched into cacti-cloaked splendor. The wellness-driven retreat is an idyllic duet of relaxation and adventure, the former underscored by long soaks in the cascading, mineral-rich springs, which Native Americans have used for millennia to alleviate aches and revitalize the skin. The adventure aspect comes in the form of a Via Ferrata cable climbing course. Over multiple hours, you’ll scale the mountainous terrain,

an adrenaline-packed affair of frightening foot-wedging, suspension-bridge-crossing, “don’t look down” moments, and, ultimately, great accomplishment. Between these two extremes are desert hikes, horseback riding, guided archery, pickleball, yoga, meditation, soul-enriching spa treatments, and more. Books and telescopes offer in-room entertainment, with the likes of televisions and Bluetooth speakers intentionally absent to promote digital detox. Days are structured around three memorable meals, featuring just-harvested ingredients from the on-site organic farm and greenhouse where 500-plus varieties of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and florals prosper. Dining and most activities are bundled into the Castle Hot Springs’ rates, meaning there’s no reason to leave the property and every reason to simply—and completely—leave the outside world behind. ENCHANTMENT RESORT The landscapes of Sedona are among America’s most breathtaking. The drama of high-rising, red-rock earth colliding with old-growth forest unfolds as cinematic montages, intended for veneration and exploration. Here, the rugged landscapes and glowing sandstone take center stage, with wow-factor views from the swimming pool, central firepits, restaurants, and select room terraces. A new Trail House is home base for outdoor adventure, with a team of experts coordinating guided and self-led endeavors in mountain biking and hiking among 300 miles of scenic trails. The truth is you don’t need to go far to find the best viewpoints—many are accessible from short- to medium-length trails that commence right on property. Pause in between Red Rock Country’s active pursuits to embrace Enchantment’s well-being activities, which include chakra balancing, qigong, Vinyasa yoga, and lectures

hink “bank” and a few images come to mind: vaults, coffered ceilings, teller cages, and acres of dark wood. It’s the design aesthetic of old money, and it’s given even more gravitas when the clients are U.S. presidents. Such is the history of the Riggs Washington DC hotel (riggsdc.com), housed in the 1891 landmarked building that was once home to the capitol’s Riggs National Bank, which handled the finances of 23 presidents. This illustrious heritage did not go unnoted by Lore Group creative director Jacu Strauss, who helmed the property’s reimagining. Strauss preserved many of the original features of the Richardsonian Romanesque Revival building—one of few remaining in the city—including the iconic barrelvaulted lobby and coffered ceilings. Nods to the building’s past life are everywhere: a reception area recalls a teller window; decorative safes house minibars and, well, safes; and a giant medallion of the Goddess of Money looms in the lobby. One can even strike cocktail gold in the original bank vault, now transformed into subterranean bar Silver Lyan (silverlyan.com), undoubtedly one of Riggs’ high points. Mr Lyan (real name Ryan Chetiyawardana), of White Lyan and Dandelyan in London, has to be one of the most creative mixologists on the planet. Mr Lyan interprets a place’s history and culture into concoctions that have to be sipped to be believed. An example: While you wait for your Ceres Joker, the server brings you a

masked-bear figurine holding a helium balloon. The bear sways creepily until the Macallan- and sloe gin– based cocktail arrives. The server sets the string alight and the balloon detonates, releasing the scent of gunpowder into the drink. There are less dramatic ways to deliver a smoky cocktail, but where’s the fun in that? Riggs’ 181 guest rooms are modern interpretations of the early-twentieth-century style that informed the original building. The suites are inspired by first ladies, an inspiration that came to Strauss following a private tour of the White House. “I chose four lesserknown first ladies, but each had strong minds with regards to the atmosphere and culture they wanted to create in the White House,” he says. “I tapped into these legacies in an abstract way, to avoid creating a museum-like interior.” Like all interiors, it’s the small details that, when taken together, make a big statement. For instance, Strauss created “trophy cabinets” in Silver Lyan, displaying trophies women have received for such quirky things as a tractor-driving competition. He reiterated the building’s heritage through framed checks from Riggs National Bank (some more than 120 years old), which he’d collected over the years and installed on the wall behind the reception desk. “Riggs came with a rich history from its time as a bank during the golden ages and the architectural expression that came with it,” Strauss says. “I wanted to contrast this with aspects that were more playful [and] surprising moments throughout the hotel.” «

VOLKSWAGEN’s upcoming ID Buzz people carrier captures the groovy vibe of the original By Howard Walker

P

ull out your favorite psychedelic tie-dye, baggiest boho harem pants, and round sunglasses à la John Lennon because the VW bus is back. And I tell you, daddy-o, it’s really far-out. Volkswagen has reinvented the iconic, beloved, hippy-dippy Microbus. It’s called the ID Buzz and it’s all-electric. My reaction in four words? What took so long? This is an aesthetic masterpiece—a lofty-roofed people mover that captures the born-to-be-wild look and spirit of the original. Even better: It brings the design up to date with some very cool technology. The ID Buzz is based on the same electric “skateboard” platform used in VW’s new ID.4 electric crossover. When it lands on U.S. shores, it should have a range of around 300 miles and charge from 5 to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes. But it’s the design that’s so fun and funky. Google the boxy ’60s Microbus, and all the visual homages are there: the V-shaped front panel, that pizza-sized VW logo, the towering windshield up front, the two-tone paint—it even has its motor in the back. And it’s still as square as a loaf of bread, with mile-high sides and lots of windows. Sadly, there are no plans for the eight rooftop windows that came with the old Samba bus. However, a California camper is in the works, complete with a stove, sink, and lift-up tops for those nights in the woods or trips to Woodstock. Around back, that high-lifting tailgate is more upright than a barn door, with plenty of bodywork to attach that “If this bus is a-rockin’, don’t come a-knockin’!” sticker. The ID Buzz pictured here is the short-wheelbase Euro version. Nose to tail it’s about the same length as a Mercedes C-Class sedan, with just

two rows of seats. We’ll be getting a stretchedwheelbase Buzz, with room for three rows of pews and a bigger battery under the floor for a longer range and zippier performance. There will also be optional all-wheel drive courtesy of an extra electric motor up front. But if you think the exterior is hip, wait until you step into the driver’s seat. Think of it as Ikea meets the Apple Store, with all-vegan fabrics, cool dashtop displays, and driftwood-like veneer. Those front seats are more like Barcaloungers, with twin armrests, grippy bolstering, and elevated, see-the-world positioning. Orange upholstery? Yeah, we’re digging it.

Back in the second row there’s terTHE WHEEL WORLD BLOG ON rific legroom and NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM headroom, and the seats can glide backward and forward for added flexibility. Flip the backrests forward to reveal one of the Buzz’s best features: storage space. This thing is as cavernous as a Pods unit, with a high roof and flat sides and floor that make it an ideal load-hauler. This dedication to storage is visible throughout the cabin. It might be something as simple as the small pocket in the back of the front seats that’s the exact size of a cell phone, or the oversize center console that’s big enough for a laptop. All this happy, smiley joy over the arrival of the all-new ID Buzz is tempered by one heart-wrenching revelation: We won’t be getting this adorable magic bus until 2024. It seems initial production will be for the short-wheelbase model, primarily for an eager European market. U.S. drivers will have to wait for the stretched-wheelbase version. Don’t expect it to be cheap either. VW’s smaller ID.4 compact SUV kicks off at $40,760, so I reckon a base price of $48,000 to $50,000. But the chance to cruise around in a modern-day version of one of the swinging sixties’ hippest and hippiest rides? Well, that’s priceless. «

The Adventures of TINTIN

This 112-foot Westport superyacht is ready to take you to places far and wide By Howard Walker

T

here was no more enthusiastic a globe-trotter than the inquisitive, ginger-quaffed mystery-solver named Tintin. Created by Belgian cartoonist Hergé in 1929, Tintin traveled the world looking for adventure with his trusty canine sidekick, Snowy. Tintin and his joie de vivre no doubt inspired the owners of this gorgeous 112-foot, American-built Westport to name their new yacht after the lovable character. Since launching late last year, the mini-superyacht’s adventurous spirit was put to the test when it cruised from Westport’s yard in Port Angeles, Washington, through the Panama Canal, ending in Palm Beach just in time to shine at this year’s Palm Beach International Boat Show. Now, after a sudden change of plans, this dreamy luxury cruiser is 70

on the market with top brokers Fraser Yachts for $17.5 million. Part of its considerable appeal is the fact that the lucky buyer will be getting a virtually brand-new yacht with all the bugs sorted out and without the typical two-year wait. Tintin—pronounced “tan-tan” for all you Francophiles—is the latest in Westport’s popular W 112 series. Since the 112 was introduced in 1994, 65 have been built, making it arguably the most successful superyacht ever. Of all the 112s out there, Tintin boasts the coolest, sexiest, craziest interior of them all. It is part floating South Beach boutique hotel, part gift shop at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. The snowy-white walls are broken up by splashes of vibrant color, textured finishes, and whimsical decorations. The salon has huge windows and bleachedblond wood flooring, as well as a glass and chrome dining table surrounded by see-through acrylic chairs. This space boasts some great art too, including a waist-high, multicolored Great Dane sculpture and a near floor-to-ceiling Pop Art painting of screen siren Lauren Bacall. Westport’s in-house design team went crazy with Lumicor, the

turquoise acrylic resin that looks like the waters off the Exumas. The stunning kitchen countertop, the flybridge bar and tabletop, and the outdoor table in the cockpit are all the color of the sea and a perfect match to Tintin’s waterline hull stripe. Another unique design highlight is that terrific top-deck hardtop flybridge, with clear eisenglass panels that can be opened or closed. Three steps out and down from the flybridge take you to the shaded back deck, which features a Jacuzzi, a lounger, and even a grassy area for that extra feeling of home Snowy would adore. When friends and family come to stay, Tintin has four big staterooms, one of which is currently set up as a gym. Part of the Westport 112’s proven sea-keeping ability comes down to its wave-cleaving hull and tough fiberglass-composite construction. Speaking of the hull, the design changes that came with the latest W series saw the previous tiny porthole-like windows replaced with swaths of tinted glass that fill the superstructure. It’s hard to imagine a more perfect yacht for family fun. We think Hergé’s Tintin would approve of his nautical namesake. «

COURTESY OF CAPTAINS FOR CLEAN WATER COURTESY OF SOUTH FLORIDA WATER MANAGEMENT DISTRICT

In 2016, enough was enough for Captains Daniel Andrews and Chris Wittman, long-time fishing guides. Both were weary of water management practices, especially large discharges from Lake Okeechobee, adversely impacting the estuaries that recreational and commercial fishermen depend on. From their frustrations and a desire to restore and protect water resources in Southwest Florida came Captains for Clean Water, a nonprofit grassroots organization headquartered in Fort Myers. Andrews, a Lee County native, co-founder of the organization with Wittman, has long been aware of regional water quality concerns, but he describes 2013 as an especially disturbing year. “There was a major water crisis [in Lee County] due to massive discharges from Lake O, which produced huge seagrass and oyster die-offs,” relates Andrews. “I found ways to work around it … but seeing the aftermath, seeing all the estuaries and the death was pretty heartbreaking. After the 2013 discharges, some of my favorite fishing areas were decimated and weren’t even beginning to recover by January 2016, when the next crisis started.” Andrews explains there are various reasons Lake O discharges are harmful to downstream estuaries, but two are critical. First, massive amounts of freshwater flowing into the estuaries dramatically drops the salinity of the water. The second problem is the high turbidity that Lake O flows create. Brown, cloudy water forms a barrier impeding sunlight penetration, denying seagrasses the ability to photosynthesize. No sugar for plants is a death sentence. And, as with most things ecological, there’s a trickle-down effect because seagrasses sustain incredible amounts of sea life—and sequester large amounts of carbon. Lake O discharges impact Collier County, too. “The amount of nutrients in Lake O discharges exacerbates red tide,” Andrews relates. 76

“There’s an impact that’s felt in Collier County because of southward water currents.” Long-time Naples resident Ellin Goetz, who serves as vice chair for The Everglades Foundation’s board of directors and president at Goetz+Stropes Landscape Architects, agrees: “The red tide issue affects the entire county, and I would argue is directly related to waterflows coming out of the Caloosahatchee [from Lake O]. … Too much pollu-

tion is coming from there, and we need to get that right.” Although Captains for Clean Water focuses on policy-related matters, most recently Senate Bill 2508, its chief objectives are education and creating awareness. “Most of what we do is education and outreach … working with people so that they have a better understanding of how the estuaries relate to them and the economy,” says Andrews. “When an important policy matter comes up, we have no choice. There are decisions that are made at the local, state, and federal levels that affect our water.”

“WE’RE SEEING A TREMENDOUS POSITIVE ECOLOGICAL RESPONSE ALREADY [FROM THE PICAYUNE STRAND RESTORATION].” —CHARLETTE ROMAN

Constructed on a promise of becoming the largest subdivision in the nation, Southern Golden Gate Estates has had a complicated history. The land was initially logged for cypress trees in the 1940s and 1950s. Soon after, Gulf American Land Corporation (GALC)—at the time one of the largest land sales companies in the United States—purchased this area, eventually selling about 170,000 square acres to some 40,000 buyers, promising a paradisiac city that, in reality, was underwater throughout the rainy season. Buyers often purchased sight unseen or after only viewing the land from an airplane—during the dry season. To move water off the land and make home lots habitable, GALC constructed more than 300 miles of roads and 170 miles of flood-control canals. The dream of the subdivision never materialized, and what was left behind was a hydrologic disaster. “Roads are dams; they inherently alter the hydrology. Having canals and draining of the wetlands [also] alters the hydrology. It changes the landscape, and it changes how wildlife uses the land,” says Meredith Budd, regional policy director for the Florida Wildlife Federation. The first step in remedying the problems involved land reacquisition from thousands of landowners. Funds from the state’s Conservation and Recreation Lands program provided initial support, and in 1998, the federal government allocated $25 million to the state to secure remaining parcels. Today, this reclaimed area is known as Picayune Strand State Forest. The Picayune Strand Restoration Project, now nearly complete, seeks to restore this area’s natural hydrology, including improved waterflow to Collier-Seminole State Park, Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, and Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Removing crumbling roads, plugging canals, and building pump stations that restore the natural flow of water are all essential to the project, with humans and wildlife both benefiting. Habitats will be restored for plants and animals, and a recharged aquifer will aid in protecting water supplies and mitigating saltwater intrusion. 78

RESTORING THE

“Last year, I had the honor of turning on the Faka Union Pump Station, and I’m excited to tell you that we’re actually getting there,” says Charlette Roman, South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) governing board member and retired U.S. Army colonel. A Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan project, the restoration of Picayune Strand has been championed by several stakeholder groups and government agencies, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and SFWMD, a regional governmental organization that oversees water resources from Orlando to the Keys. “We’re seeing a tremendous positive ecological response already, and we haven’t completed all of it yet,” explains Roman. “I meet with the Corps regularly … and we’re looking at maybe 2023 for the project to be finished and fully operational.”

Across Florida, there are 15 localized groups that form Waterkeepers Florida, a nonprofit that seeks to protect and restore water resources for more than 45,000 square miles of watershed. Collier County Waterkeeper, a nonprofit organization affiliated with Waterkeepers Florida, is directed by Waterkeeper K.C. Schulberg.

“Water quality is degrading; it’s not improving … we’ve got to start fixing this. There’s a lot of people doing wonderful work, but the headwinds are tough,” Schulberg says. “Climate change and so many people coming to Florida stress the environment and our infrastructure.” A neighbor to the north, Calusa Waterkeeper John Cassani echoes Schulberg regarding development’s effects on water quality: “Since 2018, Lee and Collier counties have the first and third highest rates of population increase respectively and the highest rates of increase in water quality impairment among the nine-county region of Southwest Florida. Additionally, Lee and Collier counties lead the state in applications that impact wetlands.” The solutions are not simple, fast, or easy. However, to help address water-related problems, Collier County Waterkeeper has elected to focus on five main issues: ● Climate change, resulting in sea-level rise, saltwater intrusion, flooding, storm surge, and storm intensification, to name some of the many identified impacts ● Wetland preservation and restoration, including respon-

sible growth management practices that protect against the negative effects of over-development ● Harmful algal blooms (HABs), such as blue-green algae and red tide, which can create serious health problems for people, plants, and animals ● Stormwater runoff, which is amplified by the increasing development of impervious surfaces (such as parking lots and roads, which shunt polluted runoff into local waterbodies) ● Preserving coral reefs, endangered from warming waters, ocean acidification, and pollutants Not all, but many of the area’s water problems stem from high nutrient loads, particularly nitrates, phosphates, and carbon. Too many nutrients cause environmental imbalances and fuel habitat-destroying blue-green algae and naturally occurring red tide. The source of these excess nutrient loads is complex. Fertilizer runoff from Lake O discharges play a factor due to southward-flowing waters in the gulf. However, there are more localized root causes as well, especially at the start of our wet season, when runoff contaminated with pollutants NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY/JUNE 2022

COURTESY OF THE EVERGLADES FOUNDATION

Founded in 1993, The Everglades Foundation is a prominent nonprofit organization providing solutions aimed at protecting and restoring the Everglades, which provides the daily drinking water supply for some nine million people and billions of dollars to Florida’s economy. The foundation harnesses science-driven research and advocacy to effect positive change. However, problems can’t be solved if they go unacknowledged or misunderstood. “It’s so hard to get people aware,” says Goetz, vice chair for The Everglades Foundation’s board of directors. “Constant outreach and engagement is key,” she adds, to getting people to understand why they should be concerned about hydrology issues and the health of the Everglades. The Everglades Foundation has developed a sophisticated literacy program, including Everglades literacy teacher trainings; free lessons and materials for teachers who attend designated educational trainings; a free, online K-12 teacher toolkit containing 36 comprehensive Everglades lesson plans that align with Next Generation Sunshine State Standards; and more. The goal is to teach the next generation of leaders and inspire future environmental stewards. “We’ve trained 312 teachers across 52 schools in Collier County, and we received a grant in November 2021 from the Collier Community Foundation to expand STEM [science, technology, engineering, and math] programs in Collier County,” says Tate Vangellow, Everglades

from lawns, septic systems, and other urban sources bleeds into natural waterflows. “As the rainy season starts, what happens is a toilet flush,” explains Schulberg. “With those first rains, we’ll see a spike of nutrients coming into the water, and since our ground is basically sand, water [moves] more effectively into the watershed than other places in the country.” There are no easy fixes to control these nutrient loads, but there are ways to help, even on an individual level. Schulberg recommends 10to 15-foot setbacks for those with waterfront properties. Landscaping with Florida-friendly plants that don’t require fertilizer or avoiding fertilizer altogether—especially during the wet season—is environmentally beneficial, too. According to Schulberg, “It’s all about reducing nutrients at their source.”

There are three lessons per grade level, organized around Everglades-related themes. For example, Kindergarten students learn about the animals of the Everglades through a safari-based theme, while the eighth-grade curriculum focuses on human impacts. Secondary educational programs are circumscribed by themes of human impact, watersheds, and water use in society. “Water is the lifeblood of the Everglades,” says Vangellow. “We teach that to students at a young age and get them to imagine it’s like the blood in their bodies; anything [they] can do to protect that resource is important.” «

L

ike Dr. Seuss’ Lorax, a concerted group of community leaders and philanthropists are speaking for the trees in Collier County—planting a legacy for the environment and future generations. In 2017, Hurricane Irma roared ashore near Marco Island on September 10, packing 115 mile-per-hour winds. It was a devastating blow that destroyed homes, businesses, and infrastructure and decimated the Collier County landscape. The City of Naples alone lost almost 2,000 trees, so the county-wide toll, while unknown, was enormous. Unfortunately, reestablishing a tree canopy can take several years or decades. From government agencies to local nonprofits, there are several collaborations and projects unfolding across Collier County to plant storm-hardy trees. Trees are imperative to the health and well-being of residents, wildlife, and the built environment. They provide shade, bird and wildlife habitats, erosion and water run-off control, beautification, transpiration, and photosynthesis, a process that includes converting carbon dioxide—a contributor to climate change—into oxygen. “Planting right trees in the right locations can be an important tool in addressing the effects of climate change,” says Naples Botanical Garden President/CEO Donna McGinnis. There are other benefits, too. According to the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Services, shade trees increase property values “an average of 10 percent and as much as 20.” It also notes that properly located shade trees “around buildings can save 20 to 50 percent on energy bills,” among many other benefits. “What we plant today is part of a legacy we leave for future generations,” says Collier Community Foundation President/CEO Eileen Connolly-Keesler. COLLIER COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Rolls Up Its Sleeves A few years ago, the Collier Community Foundation established a capital campaign called “Your passion. Your Collier.” to raise funds for six critical areas, including the environment. Campaign co-chair Rob Funderburg, and his wife, Cathy, immediately stepped up with a $500,000 environmental donation to fund a new project called Collier Trees. Often, local governments don’t build in generous landscaping budgets for new projects or don’t have large enough reserves to replace lost trees. Connolly-Keesler explains that is where the foundation can facilitate the distribution of philanthropic dollars for identified projects and ensure they are completed to donors’ satisfaction. “Many projects need to happen, but resources just haven’t been there for the city and county to do what they need to do,” she says. “Donors have stepped up to help make a difference, so we make sure to spend their dollars exactly as intended.” Collier Trees has invested $450,000 to plant 507 mostly native trees at 12 public sites in Immokalee, Naples, Everglades City, East Naples, and Goodland. One involved the planting of 56 trees to provide natural shade at the popular Immokalee Sports Complex so spectators wouldn’t wither in the hot sun. The Funderburgs’ donation also has beautified East Naples Community Park through a $67,930 grant for the installation of a palm allée (botanical alleyway) and flowering trees. Another Collier Trees grant will landscape Marco Island’s Veterans’ Community Park after its expected July completion. In 2020, to honor the foundation’s thirty-fifth anniversary, the botanical garden distributed 3,500 free saplings to residents. With a Collier 84

Trees grant, garden staff raised the trees from seeds and instructed recipients on caring for them and on their benefits in the landscape. An important component of Collier Trees: These new trees are either native to Florida or the Caribbean, so they are storm resistant and don’t require excess water or fertilizer because they’ve evolved naturally with the local climate and soils. Rob Funderburg, a retired banker, has enjoyed seeing Collier Trees take root through the foundation’s oversight. “The process has gone very well. We’re very pleased to see the impact and excited to see the benefits for the community going forward into the future,” he says. Before relocating to Naples in 2017 from Illinois, he championed the distribution of more than 10,000 conifer seedlings while chairman of Alpine Bank & Trust Co., co-founded the Boone County Community Foundation, and worked with several conservation districts to amass and donate more than 1,400 acres of environmentally sensitive land. “I first became interested in nature and the environment as a child while on family trips to national parks, and I started supporting environmental

causes while in college,” he says. Cathy serves on the Naples Botanical Garden board. Conservation “runs in our family a little bit with both she and I working in parallel ways,” he adds. Their favorite aspect of Collier Trees, he notes, is “being part of a collaborative effort” with nonprofits, local municipalities, and the county for a “positive environmental and aesthetic impact on the community.” Neapolitans’ generosity has been the connection between organizations and a stronger community. The Blair Family Foundation contacted the foundation to coordinate a three-year, dollar-for-dollar matching grant challenge to reforest the City of Naples. The city was able to raise $199,213 from neighborhoods, individuals, and homeowner associations, matched for a total of $398,426 in urban reforestation funding. The city estimated the price for a new tree between $800 and $5,000. NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY/JUNE 2022

Outreach

In addition to making Collier Trees a boots-on-the-ground reality, the Naples Botanical Garden is working on conservation and community education on many fronts. Among them is a 205,000-seed bank representing 40 rare, threatened species that are underrepresented in botanical collections. McGinnis calls the rare seed bank a “Noah’s ark” for ecological restoration. For example, it is storing seeds for Puerto Rican cacti afflicted by a harmful mealybug. Once the pest is under control, the seeds will be sent to Puerto Rico for reforestation. Another is the development of the $15.5 million, 66,000-square-foot Evenstad Horticulture Campus. It will consist of specialized greenhouses and nurseries for growing plants, laboratories, and the seed bank. It is named in honor of board member Grace Evenstad and her late husband, Ken, longtime benefactors and lead donors for this project. She’s been involved with the 12-year-old botanical site since day one. “Gardening is something I’ve always had a passion for,” she says. Her grandfather was a chemist and botanist, and she was also inspired by her parents. A longtime grape farmer, she (with her late husband) founded Domaine Serene Winery in Oregon in 1989 and works with about 40 vineyards in Burgundy’s famous Côte d’Or, where their other winery, Château de la Crée, is located. Evenstad was “really moved” by the destruction at the garden after Hurricane Irma. “There were so many trees that went down—hundreds,” she recalls. She was “surprised that the garden was able to function so well without greenhouses.” The loss of large trees meant the loss of ground cover and understory flora. “All of a sudden there was no shade, and everything fried,” she says. 86

The Evenstads donated the initial funds for the Evenstad Horticulture Campus, including for the site’s prep work—the grading, paving, and utilities infrastructure. “I want to see the garden continue to grow and it is,” she says. “It’s much better than it was before the hurricane.”

Florida Gulf Coast University’s Everglades Wetland Research Park, housed at the Naples Botanical Garden, studies red mangrove wetlands to understand their carbon-storing functions and how to create and restore wetlands.

Working with county and city agencies from Marco Island to Fort Myers, homeowner associations, and water, golf course, and public utilities managers to teach landscape installers and decision-makers about plant selection, location, and care. “Putting the right tree in the right place is critical,” says McGinnis.

In Our BackYard:

MANGROVE RESTORATION Since 2012, dedicated, hardworking teams have focused on what the Conservancy of Southwest Florida calls “one of the largest mangrove forest restorations in Florida history.” The conservancy, Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Coastal Resources Group, Inc., City of Marco Island, Collier County, and state agencies have been trying to restore targeted areas within a 223-acre stressed mangrove forest that began with die-offs in the mid-1990s along San Marco Road (Route 92 and 92A) near Goodland because of the road and area development. Conservancy Environmental Science Director Kathy Worley— who’s been involved with the site since the ’90s— says Rookery Bay oversees the project; Coastal Resources Group is coordinating the physical site work. The conservancy is evaluating past and current projects to determine their success. Some of the canopy has returned and terrestrial and aquatic creatures are returning to areas

that were restored, Worley reports. She hopes to see the same results with newly restored areas. Restoration involves “replumbing” the hydrological flow with culverts and other engineering methods to reestablish tidal flushing—the natural ebb and flow of saltwater and freshwater in the brackish system to occur. Southwest Florida is home to red, black, and white mangroves that live around estuarine waters. Red mangroves straddle land and water, where they become nurseries for crustaceans and baby fish to grow larger, protected from predators. They also store carbon, provide wildlife habitat, and break wave energy during storms, Worley points out. “If you like to eat fish, you’ve got to like mangroves,” she says. People used to view mangrove thickets as fetid, mosquito-infested detriments, she notes, but now the importance and function of these ecosystems is widely understood. “We’re trying to fix our mistakes,” Worley says. « NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY/JUNE 2022

n paper, power catamarans make the perfect cruiser. They’re wide and stable, with acres of live-aboard space. They’re fast and hugely efficient too. And more and more of them are using solar energy for power. Yes, their expansive beam can make snagging a marina slip challenging, but smart boaters are finding that power cat positives far outweigh the negatives. It might be the time to try a big cat on for size.

Think of it as Florida’s finest. Aquila Yachts in St. Petersburg recently introduced what could be the coolest-looking cat of them all: its new $4 million Aquila 70. And being born and raised in the Sunshine State, it’s designed for soaking up rays. Up on its wide foredeck, you’ll find huge sun pads and forward-facing sofas, while a fully enclosed flybridge comes air-conditioned when you need to escape the heat. Out on the back deck, there’s a large table and sofas for alfresco dining. Steps lead down to a full-width beach club outfitted with a huge

hydraulically levitating platform between the hulls, if you’re looking for a place to park your tender. Below decks, there’s a quartet of staterooms, including a magnificent full-width master suite with hull windows that flood the cabin with light. Twin 1,000-hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels with joystick-controlled IPS drives—one in each hull— can thrust the Aquila to a top speed of close to 30 knots, while the 1,162-gallon tanks will take you more than 3,000 nautical miles. This is one cat that’s the real meow.

There’s no more prolific a sailing cat builder than Clearwater, Florida–based Leopard Catamarans. That being said, the yachts are actually built in South Africa by Robertson & Caine, with most crafts ending up in the charter fleets of The Moorings, Sunsail, and Footloose. But power cats are also big at Leopard; the fleet’s latest is the perfectly sized 53 Powercat, with a three-cabin layout and a spacious owner’s stateroom that fills the entire starboard hull. Launched at the 2020 Miami International Boat Show, this 53 instantly won the coveted Multihull of the Year award. As the replacement

for the previous Leopard 51, it has big hulls to fill, as this reportedly was the bestselling power cat of all time. Beautifully finished and nicely equipped, the salon is all big, comfy freestanding sofas, with a spacious galley that opens out on to the 25-foot-wide back deck. One major attraction about the 53 is its impressive seakeeping, with the ability to slice through big waves without lots of between-hull pounding. That, and its 22-knot top speed make it one Leopard that can really roar.

From the flybridge, the forward deck looks big enough to land a helicopter on. But then a descending chopper might pose a problem for someone luxuriating in the foredeck hot tub. (Did we mention the hot tub?) This French-built 67-footer from La Rochelle– based Fountaine-Pajot is all about one thing and one thing only: entertaining. That vast, teak-decked foredeck has space for a multitude of loungers, bean bags, and sun pads, plus a deep dining/relaxing conversation pit with its own door into the saloon. And being French, style is also key—from those stunning axe-shaped bow sections, to the low-slung coach roof, to the choice of interior veneers and upholstery. Très chic. The yacht’s impressive 32-foot beam allows for huge cabins—the owner’s suite stretches more than 237 square feet and includes a dressing room with a sofa and a cavernous bathroom. Twin Volvo diesels, with a choice of 300-hp or punchier 480-hp versions, can give a top speed of up to 25 knots. With the 1,057-gallon tanks brimmed, the 67 can cruise majestically for more than 1,700 nautical miles. Think of it as a five-star Fountaine of youth.

High-luxury, zero-emission globe-trotting in an all-electric power catamaran is the promise of new German boat builder Alva Yachts. Although the company was formed just a year ago, it’s about to complete its brand-new Ocean Eco 60 and has a 90-foot version waiting in the wings. The 60 is a guaranteed head turner. With its twin towering vertical bows and bold “flying” buttresses connecting the coach roof to the bows, it could be an extra out of the next Star Wars movie. With integrated solar panels filling the flybridge roof, forward overhang, and those buttresses, the 60 can produce 20kW of solar energy that gets stored in its banks of lithium batteries. These in turn power twin electric motors—owners get to decide how big—that can push the yacht at 7 knots for up to 110 nautical miles, or at 4 to 5 knots indefinitely. You can also crank up the high-capacity generator when the batteries get low. (And, of course, there’s no shortage of electricity to power up your laptop.) Clever interior design from one of the company founders, Holger Henn, has resulted in plenty of accommodation space. The starboard hull provides an owner’s stateroom with a bedroom, an adjoining den/office, and an apartment-sized bathroom.

Call it the Thunder from Down Under. Leading Aussie power cat designer Longreach is putting the finishing touches on its brand-new Longreach 44 High Performance, which packs a screaming top speed of 34 knots. The secret to its speediness? A super efficient hull shape, plus two underwater hydrofoils that lift the slender hulls to reduce drag. That, and a pair of honking 600-hp Yanmar turbo diesels. This performance element is new to the Longreach philosophy. Until now it’s been all about going as far as possible on a tank. The standard 44 typically comes with a pair of 250-hp Yanmars that, at an 8.5-knot cruising speed, sip diesel at less than 3 gallons an hour. It gives it an astonishing range of more than 3,000 nautical miles. That’s Palm Beach to Maine and back. The Longreach range of 44 and 54 models is built in Thailand by award-winning power cat maker Powerplay, which would be delighted to ship one to Florida. Don’t expect delivery any time soon, though—production is booked through 2022.

Tennis ace Rafael Nadal is one of the newest converts to the spatial benefits of power catamarans. Back in June 2020, he traded his sleek Monte Carlo 76 motor yacht called Beethoven for a brand-new Sunreef 80 power catamaran. He’d already chartered a number of power cats from the Polish builder before commissioning the azure-blue-hulled Sunreef he named Great White. The appeal? Maybe it’s the 4,000 square feet of living space, with four cabins for a total eight guests. The owner’s suite features a walk-in dressing room, sofa, and private folddown balcony. With a whopping 39-foot beam, this big cat boasts a huge covered flybridge with a wet bar, a barbecue, and acres of sun pads for tanning, plus a tender garage at the stern big enough for a small armada of Jet Skis and water toys. To satisfy his need for speed, Nadal opted for twin 1,200-hp diesels to give a top speed of 27 knots, as well as huge fuel tanks for a long range. Nadal and his wife, Maria, are from the Spanish island of Mallorca; they keep the Sunreef 80—base price around $7 million—in a slip right outside their home. “Between a catamaran and a monohull, there is no comparison. The space you have is impossible to compare,” says Nadal. “I have such great memories of my charters, I had to have one for myself.”

The benefit of twin hulls on a powerboat aren’t restricted just to huge-beam, XXL-sized gin palaces. Up in Burlington, Washington, family-run Aspen Power Catamarans has been building a range of quirky, 28- to 40-foot power cats that owners just love. Aspen’s newest offering is the multifunctional, 37-foot C108, with the immediate triple appeal of not only having outboard power, but also boasting a skinny draft of a mere 1 foot, 10 inches. And with its narrow 10-foot beam, it can be trailered. But quirky is the word here. Like other Aspen models, the new C108 features asymmetrical displacement hulls, with one hull being 35 percent thinner than the other. It’s kind of the same thinking behind an outrigger canoe. It means less drag, better fuel efficiency, and zippier performance. And while the C108 comes with twin outboards, one hull gets a 115-hp Yamaha and the other a 200-hp Yamaha. With both motors humming, this cat tops out at 26 knots, burning just a gallon of fuel per mile. The cozy saloon features a dinette opposite the galley, helm, and co-pilot seats up front, as well as a lift-up rear window. Below decks there’s a decently sized master cabin, a single, and a rather weird arrangement of a second single accessible through the head.

French builder Lagoon Yachts pretty much invented the power catamaran market back in the early 2000s by lopping the mast off its Lagoon 43 sailing cat to create the hugely successful Lagoon Power 43. The company’s creations have come a long way since then. Just feast your eyes on its latest offering: the spectacular 67-foot Lagoon Sixty 7 floating palace. Penned by the legendary French car designer Patrick le Quément, the lines of this twin-hulled beauty are low, sleek, and sexy. Even standing still, it looks like it’s slicing through waves at its 21-knot top speed. What’s so impressive about the new Sixty 7 is its truly massive deck areas. Up on the bow there’s a protected, sunken dining area, along with full-width, teak-decked spaces for sun loungers and pads. Add to this the expansive covered flybridge, with its alfresco kitchen and dining area, and the vast cockpit area with more nooks for dining and lounging. We love the oversized side cockpit pads that are perfect for a post-lunch snooze. Take your pick from four- or five-cabin layouts, while that massive 32-foot beam makes the saloon bigger than that of most luxury condos. Interestingly, Lagoon doesn’t try to overpower the Sixty 7. Balancing performance with fuel efficiency, engine choices are either twin 340-hp Volvo D6s or a pair of 440-hp Yanmar 6LYs.

Horizon Power Catamarans, with its U.S. headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, is one of the power cat pioneers. Its lineup includes the PC52, PC65, and flagship PC74— though it’s the 60-foot PC60 that’s the sweetheart of the range, with more than 50 sold. Big but not too big, it packs four staterooms into its 24-foot, 6-inch beam—including the option of a stunning forward-facing master suite on the main deck. The 60 also comes with the choice of an open bridge, a semi-enclosed bridge, or an enclosed and air-conditioned Skylounge, with sliding glass doors to the aft deck. Powering the PC60 is a pair of 705-hp Cummins diesels that can give a top speed of 23 knots. Throttle back to a more leisurely 9 knots and it’ll run for nearly 1,500 nautical miles on a tank. What we love about Horizon’s customer care is that every new cat is delivered to the owner fully commissioned and equipped with all tools and spares. The company’s CEO, Richard Ford, even joins the new owners for a shakedown cruise and tutorial.

Boating is all about having fun in the sun. So why not use the power of the sun to increase your fun factor? That’s the thinking from German-owned Silent Yachts, which has been building solar-powered power cats since 2010. The company’s latest model, the Silent 60, features a roof and hardtop crammed with 42 solar panels that provide juice to a 286kWh lithium battery bank. This, in turn, powers a pair of 340kW electric motors that propel the Silent 60 silently at a zero-emission cruising speed of 6 to 8 knots. Need to get home in a hurry? Push forward the throttles for a 20-knot top speed. Planning on cruising further afield—like around the world? The latest Silent 60 is available with a light, compact, inflatable kite sail that can be deployed from a small mast on the bow. Climbing as high as 400 feet, the 140-square-foot kite can haul the 30-ton yacht along at 4 to 5 knots, depending on wind strength. Or add 4 to 5 knots to the Silent 60’s electric-powered cruising speed. Impressive. « NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY/JUNE 2022

Peru’s Signature Sip The pisco sour is popular in both Chile and Peru, though the methods of producing the distilled spirit, pisco, are different. The Peruvian variety is unoaked. Peru’s traditional cocktail combines pisco with lemon juice, simple syrup, bitters, and an egg white to lend a creamy consistency to the drink. Pictured from front to back are the classic, strawberry, and passion fruit versions of the libation at

Lima Restaurant and Pisco Bar in Naples. “You can’t have the Peruvian food experience without a pisco sour,” says Amanda Gonzalez Zuniga, co-owner with her husband, Dario. “We always recommend it to our guests to begin a meal, and we serve hundreds every week.” Turn the page for Lima Restaurant’s recipe for ceviche, another Peruvian classic.

EAT DRINK CLASSIC CUISINE

Peru’s NATIONAL Dish Ceviche, raw fish cured in citrus juices, is an iconic Peruvian dish. “We use grouper for our ceviche,” says Dario Gonzalez Zuniga, a classically trained chef and co-owner of Lima Restaurant and Pisco Bar. “It’s a very popular fish in Peru. Here in Naples, it’s versatile, sustainable, and almost always available.” Below, Zuniga shares his recipe, which is simple enough for the home cook to prepare with ease. (lima-restaurant.com)

Jefferey and Samantha Slater are passionate about lobster rolls. During a visit to Long Beach Island, New Jersey, several years ago, they visited the original location of Mystic Lobster Roll Company and returned every day during their vacation. When they heard the restaurant was offering franchises in Florida, they jumped on the opportunity and opened a Mystic location in April at the Galleria Shoppes at Vanderbilt. “Naples has a fabulous dining scene with many luxurious, high-end restaurants,” says Samantha. “But we felt the area was missing some upscale, fast casual locations, and we wanted to fill that void.” Mystic’s menu gives the diner the chance to savor a lobster roll in many different forms. Purists can indulge in the classic Maine version (mixed with a touch of mayo on a lightly buttered bun) or the Connecticut option (served warm with melted butter). More adventurous diners may sample the Deep South (chipotle mayo, jalapeño aioli, and candied jalapeños), Hawaiian (mango caviar, coconut mayo, and fresh coconut), or King Louis XIII (fresh mozzarella, razor thin prosciutto, and truffle aioli). Each roll contains up to a 1/4 pound of fresh, shelled Maine lobster meat. Gluten-free buns are available. The couple’s enthusiasm for the local area matches their zeal for the special sandwich. “We love Naples,” says Samantha, who moved here permanently in 2018. “Almost everyone who has come to visit has ended up moving here. We just hope to make a contribution to the community and provide something that was previously absent.” (mysticlobsterrolls.com)

CAFÉ CULTURE

Dancing to DOUGH The world of tango may have lost a pair of instructors, but Naples has gained an Argentine bakery. Alicia and Pablo Repun, longtime devotees and teachers of tango, suddenly found their local dance business decimated by the pandemic. They reverted to another dream they had nurtured for many years and opened Locos x Argentina (“crazy for Argentina”), a café and bake shop. “In Argentina, neighborhood cafés are the center of social life,” says Alicia. “They’re places to congregate, talk, and connect with others. We had that sense of community with the tango, and we wanted to get it back.” The couple opened the doors in October 2020, and despite COVID, they soon had lines out the door. The Repuns produce a wide range of pastries, cakes, sandwiches, pizza, and, of course, empanadas. “You don’t have to be Argentinian to enjoy empanadas,” Alicia says. “Everyone loves them.”

Pablo and Alicia Repun’s Locos x Argentina has created a sense of community in Naples.

Popular throughout South and Central America, empanadas—similar to turnovers—are perfect for takeout and eating on the go. Locos x Argentina Bakery & Café serves up several varieties, from the beef and chicken-filled classics to a breakfast version stuffed with bacon, eggs, potatoes, and cheddar. Vegetarian options include espinaca (spinach, ricotta, and artichoke), lentejas (lentils, onions, sweet potatoes, raisins, and corn), and batata (sweet potatoes, apples, chickpeas, and coconut milk). Recent innovations include an empanada packed with blue cheese, nuts, and celery, and another with mozzarella, olives, and onions. What does the future hold for the Repuns? The answer isn’t surprising: “We’d love to add a dance floor to the café,” says Alicia. (locosxargentinabakery.com)

Longstanding Figs Grille in Bonita Springs has been busier than ever, despite the pandemic, thanks to the dedication of owner and chef Sam Tadros, a veteran of the Southwest Florida dining scene. Tadros is a master of reinvention. After leaving Egypt at age 27, where he worked as an accountant, he emigrated to the United States and washed dishes while learning English. Later, he opened several restaurants in the area, including Sam-Bucco Bistro, which he sold in 2011. Tadros’ 10-week exploration of Europe provided the inspiration for Figs. “Our food is Italian-Mediterranean, but in the beginning, everyone thought it was Middle Eastern. In addition to Italy, we have dishes from Turkey, Lebanon, and Morocco. We borrow from many different cultures,” he explains. One of his best-selling entrées is lamb tagine, a classic Moroccan stew baked in an earthenware pot and served with vegetables, chickpeas, and basmati rice. Tagines of chicken and seafood are also available, along with kebobs, pastas, and veal dishes. He’s fastidious about fish, offering corvina and ahi tuna on the menu as well as daily specials of fresh market catch. Tadros chooses all the wines he serves with an emphasis on “what the customer needs and wants.” The list is well-rounded and carefully

CRAFT YOUR OWN liqueurs and cordials at home

A

By Mark Spivak

friend of mine who worked in the liquor industry was fond of saying that all spirits were basically flavored vodka. While this statement is a gross exaggeration, it contains a grain of truth when it comes to liqueurs and cordials. The infusion process is so simple that it’s easy to concoct your own at home. Why would you want to make your own liqueurs? One reason is that you can avoid the staggering amount of sugar in some commercial brands. On the low end of the scale, Amaretto contains 3 grams per ounce—roughly the same amount as orange juice. Cointreau comes in at 7.4 and Kahlúa at 11.2. By contrast, most table wines are below 1 gram per ounce. Another benefit of liqueurs and cordials is their lower alcohol level. 110

Most brands of vodka, gin, and whiskey are bottled at a minimum of 80 proof, or 40 percent alcohol by volume (ABV). Some liqueurs are that high, but many popular brands are not. Baileys Original Irish Cream contains 17 percent, and both Kahlúa and Frangelico weigh in at 20 percent. When you do it yourself, you can control how much alcohol you want in the finished product. Perhaps the best reason to go solo is that your favorite flavor may be difficult to find or not commercially available. Here are some to try now. LIMONCELLO: After Campari, limoncello is the most popular liqueur in Italy, and a great deal of it is produced at home according to family recipes. Making it couldn’t be simpler: Infuse the zest from 1012 lemons (without pith) in a liter of vodka and leave it all to marinate

for three weeks. Add simple syrup to reach the desired sweetness and cut with distilled water for your preferred alcoholic strength. The result is a perfect afterdinner digestivo. KAHLÚA: The commercial Concocting liqueurs and cordials at home is a great way to scale back on excess sugar. version is made with Arabica beans, but coffee nerds will want to use their favorite espresso or roasted brew. Most recipes call for first making a simple syrup with coffee and sugar, then adding vanilla extract and your spirit of choice (vodka, white rum, or neutral grain alcohol). Once finished and bottled, it should steep for about a month before drinking. IRISH CREAM: If you don’t mind the calories, this is the quickest and simplest liqueur to make. Pour heavy cream, sweetened condensed milk, Irish whiskey, a shot of espresso, and several tablespoons of chocolate syrup into a food processor and blend until fully mixed. It will keep well in the refrigerator for several months. LYCHEE: Lychees come into season later in May and can be picked or purchased at several local farms. You can make a liqueur by steeping the fruit in vodka with lime juice and simple syrup for three to four weeks.

If you find it too sweet, don’t fret—you can also use the liqueur to make any number of delicious cocktails, from martinis to tropical drinks. CRÈME DE MENTHE: Making your own crème de menthe allows you to avoid the artificial flavorings and colorings that plague commercial brands. In a sealed mason jar, infuse vodka with fresh mint leaves for 48 hours. Concoct a basic simple syrup with water and granulated sugar, add it to the infusion, and let it sit for another day. Strain out the mint through a cheesecloth, bottle the liqueur, and store it under a tight seal in a cool, dark place. It should last up to a year and provide pleasure as a cocktail component or an after-dinner libation. «

NUTRITION

Crazy for Cucumbers

You may hear “cucumber” and think “spa”—with good reason. Medea Galligan, a functional medicine nutritionist and owner of Medea’s Healthy Lifestyle Concepts in Naples, says that cucumbers can soothe eyes and reduce puffiness, which is why they’re often placed over the eyes during a facial. She says you can even make a scrub with cucumber, mint, Celtic Sea Salt, and coconut oil for your skin. The benefits of cucumbers go beyond the topical, however. Nutritionally, these relatives of the gourd are high in potassium, magnesium, and vitamin K and may help regulate your blood sugar, explains Galligan. Consisting of about 96 percent water, cucumbers help hydrate you while providing fiber that fills you up and helps you stay regular. Research indicates that consuming cucumbers may even help combat bad breath. Galligan recommends eating them in salads, flavored water, or simply as raw, chilled spears. Her nutritious, delicious cucumber tonic recipe is below. (medeashealthylifestyleconcepts.com)

Medea’s Cucumber Tonic Ingredients (use only organic ingredients washed with filtered water; makes approximately 12 oz.):

2 large leaves of organic lacinato kale 2 large organic cucumbers 1/4 organic lime 1 - 2 oz. organic ginger root Optional: 1/2 organic green apple 1 oz. organic aloe vera juice A dash of Celtic Sea Salt Instructions: Juice kale, cucumbers, lime, ginger root, and green apple, and then add aloe vera juice and Celtic Sea Salt. Stir, drink, and enjoy!

JESSICA SHWEDEL - SCHWEDEL STUDIO

Just before Christmas in 2010, Tami and Joe Balavage’s 16-year-old son, Michael, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. “We quickly found out, even with insurance, how expensive this disease is,” recalls Tami. Hearing of families in the community struggling to access treatment, the Balavages founded Help a Diabetic Child (HADC) (helpadiabeticchild. org) in 2013. The nonprofit organization helps families pay for medications like insulin, plus helps them access doctor visits and additional medical supplies. In 2021, HADC assisted nearly 500 young people with diabetes. “It’s a very difficult time because sometimes you’re choosing between food and paying your rent or mortgage and insulin, and it affects the whole family,” explains Tami. Cost isn’t the only challenge with diabetes though. Tami remembers returning home from the hospital, looking at a table full of new medical

supplies for her son, and thinking, “How are we going to do this?” The feeling is familiar to Jessica Shwedel, whose daughter, Leah, was diagnosed at 5 years old. “You go from having a healthy child to one day, all of a sudden, your kid has a chronic illness,” she says. “It’s completely life altering.” Having faced misconceptions about the disease, both mothers emphasize that type 1 diabetes isn’t caused by diet or lifestyle, but by an autoimmune process where the body destroys cells that make insulin. They also want people to recognize the symptoms like extreme thirst, weight loss, frequent urination, and fatigue. “This is not something, sadly, you learn about from a pediatrician,” Jessica explains. “I want them to know about that so that they [can] detect it early enough.” Since Leah’s diagnosis three years ago, the Shwedel family has become involved with the local chapter of JDRF (jdrf.org), the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes research. In fact, Jessica serves as chair for the 2022 JDRF Hope Gala. She hopes their involvement with the nonprofit organization will help empower her daughter. “Hearing other people’s stories and other people’s daily struggles, you realize there are other people out there like you,” Jessica says.

Floating weightlessly in a warm pool is just as relaxing as it sounds. “It feels like you’re in the womb,” explains Brandon Stacy, owner of World Med Spa in Naples. Floatation therapy, also called restricted environmental stimulation technique, also has research-backed health benefits. Studies have found that the therapy may help reduce pain, blood pressure, anxiety, and depression, as well as improve sleep. In fact, Stacy says people often fall asleep in the first few minutes of their session. You can try float therapy yourself at the spa, which offers a floatation tank with infrared lighting. Because the World Med Spa has a tank instead of an individual pod, you can also receive a massage while floating, which Stacy notes is especially good for cancer patients and people who can’t lie comfortably on a massage table. Whether you go for the physical and mental benefits or just to relax, Stacy adds, it’s all about health, rest, and recovery. (worldmedspa.com)

BALANCE EXPERT ADVICE

TRAIN YOUR BRAIN It’s a common belief that the brain will automatically decline with age, but it doesn’t have to, according to Paul D. Nussbaum, PhD, president of the Brain Health Center. “Age doesn’t matter because your brain doesn’t know how old it is,” he explains. “It just wants to be stimulated.” He lists five key areas for building brain resilience as you age, from nutrition to physical activity. You may be doing several already; for any areas you’re missing, Nussbaum encourages you to gradually build up to them. (brainhealthctr.com)

1

Socialization: Isolation can increase the risk of dementia and depression. Nussbaum emphasizes the importance of staying social, especially as you age.

2

Nutrition: Nussbaum suggests following the MIND diet, which focuses on foods like vegetables, fruits (especially berries), nuts, olive oil, and fish.

3

Mental stimulation: Try things new and different, whether it’s learning a new language, traveling, or taking a painting class. Nussbaum notes it’s best to do truly novel activities so your brain generates new neural circuits.

4

Spirituality: Chronic stress harms your body and your brain. Nussbaum recommends activities like yoga, prayer, and spending time in nature to help combat it.

5

Physical activity: Regular exercise, whether it’s dancing, swimming, yoga, or doing chores around the house, keeps you active while helping your brain stay healthy.

COPING WITH CHANGE

Subscribe Today @ naplesillustrated.com 116

Change often isn’t easy. Even if the change is a positive one, “it takes us out of our comfort zone,” explains Megan Goddard, a licensed clinical social worker, registered play therapist, and owner of Cardinal Counseling Services in Naples. To more effectively cope with change, she has a few suggestions. First, give yourself specific steps to move forward by creating a plan with realistic, attainable goals. If you have fears, work to challenge them with positive thoughts. She advises that you avoid internalizing worry so it doesn’t come out in other ways, like as a headache or withdrawing from friends. Remember to do things you enjoy since even small activities can have a major impact on your well-being. Above all, listen to yourself. “Acknowledge that if you’re having a hard time, that is okay,” Goddard says. “Asking for help is not a sign of weakness.” (cardinalcounselingservices.org)

WELLNESS

Moving to MANAGE PAIN This may sound familiar: You play a game of tennis or go for a run; you reach out or twist a certain way and suddenly have back, shoulder, or other pain that lasts for days. According to Spencer Richardson, owner of Meant2Move in Naples, the pain probably wasn’t caused by your day of exercise. Instead, it likely stems from a lifestyle of habits that harm your normal mechan-

ics and posture. “When we go to try to do activities like tennis …, our body is not equipped to move in that way because it’s kind of stuck in the position of sitting” or other repetitive postures, Richardson explains. As a corrective exercise specialist, he looks at imbalances in the body to identify causes of tension and pain in other places. For instance, he explains that walking with one foot turned out indicates calf tightness, which can create torsion and pain in the knee. Because small imbalances can cause larger problems, Richardson recommends getting a professional assessment. But, there are also things you can do to help. Besides keeping your body symmetrical (uncross those legs!) and maintaining good posture, he notes that it’s important to avoid letting your body adapt to a seated position. “Everybody needs to be moving,” he says. NO BOUNDARIES

Modern Dance MASTERY The renowned Limón Dance Company, the modern American dance repertory troupe founded in 1946 by José Limón and Doris Humphrey in New York City, makes its Artis—Naples debut on May 17. The posters he created were produced and disseminated all over Paris throughout the 1890s and are inextricably linked to French culture, and Paris in particular. View 25 rare glass automobile ornaments in “Jewels for the Road: Selections from the Jon Zoler Collection” at Revs Institute in Naples through June 30. Zoler, a Naples resident, has amassed more than 350 glass and metal mascots from around the world. Featured in this exhibit are one-of-a-kind accessories created by René Lalique, Marius Ernest Sabino, Red Ashay, and Lucille Sevin for Etling. According to Revs Institute: “Ornaments were attached to horses and carts as good luck charms. At the dawn of motoring, ornaments became mascots mounted on external radiator caps. Mascots were fashionable from the 1890s through the mid-1930s.” Their designs were inspired by Greek and Roman mythology, comic characters, and animals, which symbolized the speed, strength, and sleekness of the cars they adorned. The institute also has a permanent collection of 225 mascots; 50 are on display. Both exhibits are included with Revs Institute admission ($15$30). Reservations are required. (revsinstitute.org)

REACH FOR THE SKY Water ripples as a distant mangrove forest stretches toward a sky of cottony clouds in Jim Freeman’s atmospheric work entitled Panther Key Clouds. Freeman, who is experienced in many types of photography, is well-known for environments and is adept at combining the interactions of weather, water, and land. Here, he’s captured the vibrancy and serenity of the northern portion of Ten Thousand Islands, which he often photographs from locations only reachable by boat. Freeman, who enjoys sailing, lives in the historic fishing village of Goodland. His work adorns both public and private spaces, and he’s a frequent participant in area fine art shows.
