ICE CREAM TOUR

By Steve Graham,

2018 PCA-CHS Tour No. 7 -- July 14th

Guest Tour Master

One thing we know about July in Maryland is that it is going to be hot. What better way to cool off than to indulge in a frozen treat. That’s right; we are going to take a nice Saturday afternoon drive for ice cream on July 14th. So, get your Saturday chores done early, or get that round of golf in early, gas up the Porsche, and come drive with us as we wind our way through bucolic Baltimore County, arriving at Prigel Family Creamery in Glen Arm, Maryland. Our tour will cover approximately 50 miles of lightly-traveled scenic back roads, many of which were used in the CC45 & CC46 rallies. Hey, I wonder if the “pig on the pole” is still there! The Prigel family has been farming in the Long Green Valley for over 100 years and five generations. John Mathias Prigel moved to the property, which is now Bellevale Farm, as a sharecropper in 1895, and the Prigels have been dairy farming here ever since. They have diversified their farming practices to enable the business to survive in changing times. Prigel Family Creamery allows Bellevale Farm to be economically and environmentally sustainable and a continuing part of Long Green Valleys agricultural heritage. Bellevale Farm received its organic certification in 2008. Organic practices ensure happy cows, good health of the herd, and the high quality of their milk for great ice cream. http://www.prigelfamilycreamery.com/ We suggest you bring a blanket or folding chairs to sit on. After sharing ice cream at the creamery, you are free to explore the area (Boordy Vineyards is around the corner and Ladew Topiary Gardens is nearby) or perhaps have an early dinner with PCA friends. The choice is yours. Cost: Your cost is only for the ice cream you buy. Bring a cooler and ice packs and take some home with you. When: Saturday July 14th (rain or shine, no rain date) Start Time: 1:00 PM arrival for a 1:30 PM departure. Driver’s meeting is at 1:15. Start Point: The Tour will start at the Sparks Elementary School, ¼ mile east of Interstate I-83 (exit 24) on Belfast Road. Driving directions will be provided by tour master via e-mail a day or two in advance of the event. Note that there are no services (gas or toilet) at this exit or along the route, so please plan ahead. End Point: Approximately 3:15 PM at the creamery, 4852 Long Green Road, Glen Arm, MD, for ice cream. Register by Wednesday July 11th at www.clubregistration.net from June 20 through July 11. We need the name of every driver and passenger who will take part in the tour. Route instructions and updates will be sent to the e-mail addresses provided by registrants to ClubRegistration.net.

70th Anniversary Event! Story and photos—Randy Richter

Porsche 70th Anniversary at Porsche of Towson It started simply enough, Steve Postol and the team at Porsche of Towson told us they wanted to have a super spectacular 70th Porsche Anniversary celebration. Steve proposed PCA Chesapeake gathering at Hunt Valley Horsepower with Porsche of Towson supplying breakfast made by the Iron Rooster. Then Steve went even bigger by proposing a German themed lunch at the dealership. The tour committee leaped into action and planned for a tour from HVHP to Porsche of Towson through the bucolic countryside of Baltimore County. Then Jim Earlbeck of the tech committee proposed a display of 911 history, shortly after, it expanded to “we cannot ignore 356’s, Boxster’s, Cayman’s, all of the transaxle cars, Panamera’s, Cayenne’s and Macan’s! Then we said let’s have at least one example of each type of Porsche’s road cars. What were we thinking? Well….. how did we do? I think I can accurately say we were only missing a 904 Carrera and GT1 I can truthfully say, no one who attended the show was disappointed by the great cars that they were able to see up close. After being concerned all week that Saturday June 9th would bring us rain, the day dawned bright and clear. We continued to be blessed the rest of the day with no rain for the duration of the day! The action started at 8:00AM in the morning at HVHP, with what I suspect was many more than the 167 people and 99 cars that were anticipated. The lineup of cars was tantalizing show of Porsche’s. Many people from the rest of HVHP soon heard about the spectacular line up of Porsche’s and were seen walking up and down the rows of Porsche’s. They were able to see early generation 911’s, a 911R, GT3, GT3 RS’s, 356’s, Macan’s, Turbo’s of 911 and 944’s, lots of special color cars, 911, Boxster and Cayenne GTS’s. Meanwhile, courtesy of PoT, the PCA faithful enjoyed delicious coffee and breakfast sandwiches served by the Iron Rooster.

Sportscar Together!

Story and photos—Randy Richter

Porsche 70th Anniversary at Porsche of Towson The Tour Committee then briefed all of the tour participants and it was off to PoT at 10:00AM with another wonderfully planned and executed tour on beautiful country roads. Tour participants started arriving at Porsche of Towson around 11:00AM and the really big show was on! Over 200 people and 115 cars were in attendance at Porsche of Towson. In my memory of ten years of PCA Chesapeake events this was the largest event that I have ever participated in. About 45 cars were on display and I am certain that the viewers were amazed by the rarity of some of the cars. Indoors at the dealership were found a beautiful Ivory 356, a White 914-6, a Metallic White 959, a Black Carrera GT and a Silver 918 Spyder. Of course, Minta Miller had a membership table set up to help non PCA’ers to join and enjoy the fun throughout the year. She also offered her home made, delicious 911 shaped candies as a special treat for visitors. The show at PoT was just starting after viewing the fabulous cars in the showroom. Outside was an amazingly complete collection of Porsche history. On display was a 1957 Speedster in Polyantha Red, a 1966 911 in Bahama Yellow, an all original 1973 911E in Light Ivory and a 1977 930 Turbo in Ice Green Metallic. If you were not absolutely captivated by this point you should probably schedule a visit to the doctor and have your pulse checked. The beat went on with a GT2RSX race car, a beautiful Midnight Blue Metallic 1993 RS America, an Adventure Green Metallic

26

Chesapeake Region Porsche 70th Anniversary at Porsche of Towson

A full range of Boxsters were on display, including a 986 S in Viola Metallic, a White 987, a 991 GTS in Agate Grey Metallic and 718. Next up were the Caymans, including a real hot rod, a White 2012 Cayman R, a Black 981 and a 718. As you all are aware the by now the most popular Porsches are Cayenne’s, Macan’s and Panamera’s. The display of these cars did not disappoint, starting with a 2009 Cayenne GTS, along with a 2016 Cayenne GTS, a 2016 Macan S, and a 2013 Panamera GTS. As if cars were not enough Porsche of Towson supplied a wonderful German style lunch. It featured cinnamon and regular soft pretzels. Additionally, potato salad, deviled eggs, chicken schnitzel, bratwurst with sauerkraut, and tender brisket. Of course you could wash it all down with your choice of soda or a wonderful selection of German style beer. Many thank you’s from the tech committee to all who made this happen….especially Steve Postol who conceived the idea , Lori Connolly who executed many of the plans and many others on the team at Porsche of Towson. Some of Steve’s team such as Zach, the parts manager, came in on their off day to be sure we could purchase the special 70th Anniversary merchandise. Thank you to Ariano Arao who put together another wonderful tour, Minta Miller sent out eBlasts and welcomed people at the membership table, and Lynda Sobus set up the registration. Of course, the real hero’s were those who took the time and effort to bring out their cars to be displayed, thank you!

Many of the photos this moth are courtesy of Dan Wagner Photo. If Porsche is in need of a photographer in Manhattan, he splits time between Maryland and there. Dan worked with Hunt Valley Horsepower to document the Cars & Coffee and the 70th Anniversary Party at Porsche of Towson. You can see his work on Instagram @danwag and www.danwagnerphoto.com.

PCA Chesapeake Holds One of Its Largest Tours 139 People in 85 Cars Mark Porsche’s 70th Anniversary By Aniano Arao Co-Chair, Tour & Rally Committee To help celebrate Porsche’s 70th anniversary, PCA Chesapeake and Porsche of Towson sponsored a 50minute scenic drive from the Iron Rooster restaurant in Hunt Valley to the dealership. A total of 139 members and guests in 85 Porsches joined the tour on June 9. The 28-mile route took us through Cockeysville, Sparks, Glencoe, Monkton, Jacksonville, Lutherville-Timonium and Towson, all in northern Baltimore County. Organizing such a huge undertaking required the invaluable assistance of several volunteers. Doug and Francesca Ehmann, as well as Rich and Kris Townsend, collected the participants’ signatures for the PCA waiver forms. David Dukehart, Steve Wood, Larry Robinson and Steve Graham helped organize, launch and lead the cars. Will Williams, founder and administrator of the Hunt Valley Horsepower Cars & Coffee, kindly reserved parking spaces for our cars and arranged the traffic assistance of the Baltimore County Police. The officers of Precinct 7 were outstanding. They escorted our cars, closed several intersections and blocked other traffic on York Road until we reached our route’s back roads. Doug Ehmann, right, helped collect the tour participants’ signatures for the PCA waiver forms. He was one of several volunteers who provided the tour master with their invalOur thanks go to all of them. uable assistance.

Our special thanks also go to Steve Postol, Porsche of Towson’s general manager, and Lori Connolly, Priority 1 Automotive Group’s marketing director, as well as to Jim Earlbeck, Randy Richter and Janet Jackson of PCA Chesapeake’s Tech Committee. About 200 PCA members and PoT customers enjoyed the display of Porsches and the German lunch they provided at the dealership.

Concours d’Elegance

Doug Ehmann

Concours d’Elegance School at the Collectors Car Corral On June 30th, the Concours team held a session for those interested in showing their Porsche and having it evaluated against PCA judging criteria. Doug Ehmann and Donna Brandt are two of the PCA-Chesapeake Concours Directors. Along with Dan Dazzo, who is a very experienced Concours participant and Judge, the three led a discussion on Concours d’Elegance, describing what it is, types and categories of competition available, the judging process, and PCA rules. They then discussed opportunities to compete within our PCA-Chesapeake club at the Chesapeake Challenge (September 15th), and at the PCA-National level at the Porsche Parade. During this concours session, we did some demonstration of four cars. Al Saxon brought his 1984 Porsche 944, Rob Vigorito brought his Macan, Doug his 1984 911 Carrera, and Patrick Nicola brought his 2018 911 Targa. We examined the cars, explaining the process and answering questions from the group. Our host was PCA-Chesapeake member Randy Moss. Randy established the Collectors Car Corral, located at 10 Music Fair Road, in Owings Mills. The facility is a 25,000 square foot state-of-the-art-climate controlled and secure-access building. The Collectors Car Corral offers storage, detailing, and membership in an automotive country club. It’s an impressive facility and had plenty of space for this concours session. Thanks to all who participated in this session. Concours is yet another way for PCA members to enjoy their cars. The concours program has many classes – from comprehensive and intense, to less thorough and casual. The objective is for everyone to have fun with their Porsches.

3 Couples Finish on Top in Gimmick 21 Teams Vie for Honors in Memorial Day Weekend Event By Aniano Arao Co-Chair, Tour & Rally Committee

Our “Memorial Day Weekend Gimmick Rally” on May 26 was blessed with perfect, sunny weather. It attracted 42 competitors in 21 Porsches, not only from Maryland but also from Virginia and West Virginia. The route and gimmicks were created by Jim Kinnear. He and wife Diane served as our guest rally masters. Fellow Tour & Rally Committee Co-Chair Randy Moss and I provided them with administrative support. As in most gimmick rallies, those participating in the Kinnears’ contest had four objectives: (1) Follow the route, as instructed; (2) take note of certain details along the way; (3) carry out certain tasks; and (4) answer some questions. On every page of the route instructions, there were spaces where notes and answers to questions could be written down.

Mario Jorquera (driver) and Lisa Simonson (navigator) finished in first place.

Richard and Kris Townsend came in second.

The rally started from the ReMax Advantage Realty parking lot at 6021 University Blvd., Ellicott City. It ended at the parking lot Jim and Diane Kinnear served as our of our lunch destination, Looney's Pub, 8180 Maguest rally masters. ple Lawn Blvd., Fulton. Jim and Diane collected and scored the answer sheets there. After lunch, Jim announced the rally results. The top finishers were Mario Jorquera (driver) and Lisa Simonson (navigator), who came in first; Richard and Kris Townsend, who came in second; and Stephen and Cheryll Wenchel , who came in third. They were awarded lovely glass trophies.

Stephen and Cheryll Wenchel came in third.
