Editors Message: Covid is back temporarily and that means the After Holiday Party has been pushed back to March 26th, look for a new registration email in a few weeks, you don’t want to miss it. 2022 is going to be packed with all kinds of PCA events and lots of tours, someone actually said we have too many tours, must be from a region lacking tours!_! We have some great member profiles this month with former president Claude Taylor and Michael Heyse as well as Jim McKee. Aaron Miller once again provides a nice report and some great photos from his new home in Germany...Across The Atlantic. If you read part 1 last month, now you can read part 2 of Ron’s interview with racing champion and Maryland native Cameron Das and if you didn’t well go back and read it! Members can run car/parts ads here for free or paid ad’s for their businesses. If you have an article idea or any feedback, please send an email to editor@pcachs.org

Presidents Message & Member Anniversaries Ron Farb
Hey Chesapeake Region PCA Happy New Year! I certainly hope everyone has a great 2022 and that this dang virus finally goes away once and for all. Fingers crossed. I am excited to kick the year off as your new President and I know that the Executive Council of Steve, Wayne and Andy are as well. Joining us on the Board will be Ken Wilmers as the new Membership Chair replacing the incredible/do everything Minta. We also have Marsha and Steve Buss joining Donna on the Social Committee so I know we have some fun times ahead. One of their new ideas is to start having monthly breakfasts in addition to the dinners many of us fondly remember pre-covid. Good times! Fortunately for all of us, all the previous committee members are staying which is fantastic given how amazingly dedicated and good they are. I really mean this! If you would like to get involved, and I hope some of you do, we still need a Community Service lead and a new Insurance Committee lead to replace Lee. As far as Community Service goes, I would like for us to do at least 4 events per year including our annual Kindertime/Linda’s Legacy event. Please contact me if you are interested in either position. The Board is meeting in January and we hope to flush out the calendar for the year and then make it available shortly after on our web and Facebook pages. Obviously this early in the year most dates are tentative and will also depend on how covid is trending. However, if you have a great idea for an event, then please contact the appropriate committee and let’s make it happen. I would ask that you not just be an “idea fairy” coming up with ideas but that you help work to make them happen. The more things we do, the more fun the club is to everyone. If you haven’t met me or any of the Board members, then please come up and introduce yourselves to us at any of our events. I’m the first to admit that I suck at remembering names but I’ll do my best – and of course CHS PCA name badges always help J Ron

Member Names: Jim and Debbie McKee Car(s): Current: 2009 911S Cabriolet, 2015 Panamera 4, 2021 Taycan 4S Have you served on any Regional or National committees: None so far. When it came time to buy a vehicle, what made you choose your Porsche and is this your first Porsche (if not please detail prior Porsche's): It was a choice in 1975 between a Jaguar XKE and a Porsche 356B Super 90. The 356 seemed like a more reasonable car to own and operate in terms of cost and maintenance. The 356 was followed over 45 years with a '72 914, '74 914 2.0L, '87 911 Targa, 2005 911 (997.1) Cabriolet, followed by the current cars. What encouraged you to join the Porsche Club of America: Just a nicely run club of fellow enthusiasts. What are your favorite Regional &/or National events: The Tours, Aniano does a fantastic job of setting up the routes and putting good lead drivers in position to safely and enjoyably get us from the start to the finish. If money was no object, what Porsche would you love to own and why: Since I have all newer Porsche’s, a 356 would be interesting to own again.

Across the Atlantic Next up, 2022
Wilkommen aus Stuttgart! December is a fun month in Germany, the Christmas Markets are in full swing and once the Winter Solstice passes, the days finally start getting longer again! COVID curtailed our Christmas Market experience, and nearly derailed a follow-up trip to the Porsche Museum. Fortunately, the Germans are chomping at the bit to get back to normal so downtown Stuttgart featured some excellent Christmas decorations and informal Christmas markets. In a nod to the deep connection between Stuttgart and the automotive industry, both Porsche and Mercedes provided lighted cars (911 & 300SL) in the Stuttgart Schlossplatz. We spent Christmas Eve (Heiligabend) at the famous Schonbuch restaurant in downtown, finally getting chased out as the staff closed-up shop for the long weekend.
With another Christmas spent at home in the books, we decided we wanted a change of scenery for New Year’s Eve. A heat wave hit Baden-Württemberg in the run up to Christmas so snow was in short supply. Robbed of a white Christmas, we resolved to have a white New Year.

A quick search of the weather and topography brought us to the obvious conclusion; go to the Alps! We opted to stay in Germany to preclude any COVID restriction shenanigans at a border crossing and selected a town famous for the last 400 years for their Passion Plays (Passions Spiele). Settling on Oberammergau, Germany as our destination, we commenced with the next difficult question; which vehicle do we take? It’s easy to “Dial 911 in an Emergency” and opt to take the mighty sports car, but our Cayenne has been used sparingly for out-of-town trips. It’s not that the truck isn’t capable, it does everything we need perfectly but it’s hard to match the entertainment on the twisty roads or the velocity on the autobahn. Given our dedication to finding snow and a desire to try out our new Michelin Alpin 5 snow tires, the Cayenne became the weapon of choice. Hitting the road on a sunny and uncommonly warm Thursday afternoon, we set our route to pass through Ulm and maximum speed to the mountains. I can attest that a 958 Cayenne feels exceptionally smooth and planted at 200 km/h but I’m yet to test the 230 km/h top speed for our V6 variant. We made quick time as started to ascend into the foothills of the German/Austrian Alps and continuously marveled at the idyllic villages and stunning mountains. Arriving at our hotel in the center of Oberammergau, we took the opportunity to enjoy some traditional Swabian food, as well as some Italian so authentic they refused to believe Minta’s purse was Ger-

man and not Italian leather. We finally found the snow we wanted in a sun-shaded valley outside of Ettal, the home of King Ludwig II‘s winter palace. Naturally, photos don’t do the experience justice and we watched the fog rise from frozen snow and fill the valley as the temperature crept up. Spending Silvester (New Year’s Eve) in a small German village provided an amazing experience; we watched as the entire village lit off fireworks that lit up the valley as the church bells tolled in the new year; we literally “rang in the new year” with our temporary compatriots! From our perch on the top floor of a 500year-old hotel we heard the bells get drowned out by the boom of mortars and immediately followed with the blooms of color lighting up the rooftops. It seemed like everyone was awake and celebrating, all at once! The excitement and camaraderie were palpable; hopefully this was a good omen for 2022! *Want to follow along on our adventure between articles? Like to see pictures of Germany? 2021 Crab Feast: We’re Back!! With COVID receding in our rearview mirror, we’re back! For the 15th consecutive year (not counting last year’s canceled event), the Chesapeake Region PCA Crab Feast will be held at Kemptown Park in Monrovia, MD on Saturday, August 28th- rain or shine! Bring your Porsche and sense of humor to the Feast for a non-competitive car show where cleanliness and condition do not matter. Our tongue and cheek awards to the winners of the Region’s annual picnic are always fun and unpredictable, and will be based on your Porsche’s unique curb appeal. (Think it of as a midsummer’s version of the Bob and Manny Show without presents.) Trophies and door prizes are compliments of Porsche of Silver Spring!
As with every Crab Feast past, it is the food and venue that keeps Chesapeake Region members coming back for more. There will be tons of crab, shrimp, burgers, dogs, soft drinks and beer that the Region will provide - not to mention tables of side dishes and desserts that you will provide. Lighthouse Seafood of New Market will once again be steaming our crabs and jumbo shrimp. We’ll have two pavilions at Kemptown Park, with reserved parking, and we have been assured the lovely breezes that have graced the event in the past will be returning for the 14th repeat of this event! A large playground will keep your young Porsche enthusiasts occupied and a real, honest-to-goodness bathroom with running water will appeal to the most persnickety of crab feast clean freaks. Think fun family outing! This year’s event is again a little bit retro. Due to the lateness of the Porsche Parade this year, we’ve moved the event back to its traditional date the weekend before Labor Day. And the time is moved back as well to allow us to enjoy the cooler early evening air and breezes. We’ll start at 3:00 PM and end at 7:00 PM. Registration will open on July 28th on MSR (Motorsports Registration). You will be asked to bring a salad, dessert, or side-dish. This year’s increase in cost to $40 for adults and $15 for 13-17 year-olds is due to the very high prices of crabs in 2021. The Crab Feast is Free for children 12 and under. Look for an eblast with reminders and details on how to register! Questions? Contact Ellen Beck at ebeck944@comcast.net or Bob Gutjahr at Robert.g.Gutjahr@leidos.com See everyone at Kemptown Park on Saturday, 28 August!

I currently have 3, which somehow seems like not enough. In my lifetime, my family has owned 12, plus my 6, so 18 in total. (1967 911S, 1968 912, 3 914s (don't know the years, I was very young), 1982 928, 1983 944 (brother), 1984 944 (sister), 1987 944S (mom), 1987 928 S4 (brother), 1992 C2 cabrio, 2001 Boxster (mom)). My Dad still has 3 (67 911S, 92 C2 cab, 01 Boxster). We attended various regional and national events growing up, usually as a family. I especially recall the Chesapeake Challenges and Crab Feasts. Always such a great time, and I distinctly remember everyone smiling pretty much the entire time at events. Plus, just getting to be around such beautiful machines was intoxicating. So, I've pretty much wanted to own at least one Porsche for my entire life. I even wrote a book report about Porsche in Third Grade. What likely clinched it, though, was my earliest Porsche memory: the joy of riding in the back of my Dad's 67 911S when I was 6, and him giving it an Italian tune-up as we rode. Call it spirited driving. Crazy that I only had a lap belt on, but hey, times were different. My first that was truly mine was a 1988 928 S4 automatic, black over ivory, that I obtained from my father when he ran out of garage space after acquiring the 1992 C2 cabriolet. At that point, he'd owned the 928 for 12 years, and my mother also occasionally drove it to the grocery store. I then acquired another 928, a 1987 S4 5 speed; it was a parts donor upon acquisition but I resurrected her into a running car and then sold her to a friend in Canada. After I sold that, I acquired the above-mentioned 1988 928 5 speed in Lagoon Green; nickname: The Kraken (creature from the Blue Lagoon). I've had that now for 12 years. I've modified it some

for-track use (bolt in roll cage, racing seats & harnesses, mild engine modifications, 911 turbo brakes, custom suspension, and more), but now that I have a dedicated track car I'll return the interior to stock. I was in Hilton Head, South Carolina when covid began, and a remarkably affordable 01 Boxster S fell into my lap. It was an automatic though; great tiptronic, but I prefer manuals. So I kept my eyes open for another convertible, preferably a 911. I also had a Lincoln Navigator at the time but wanted to trade it for something different. I found a VW Touareg V10 in Florida, and flew down to get it to drive it back to SC. But upon arrival, the SUV was not as advertised, so I was stuck in FL without a ride home. While I could have just flown home... I jumped on Facebook to see what the market had for me in the way of a 911 (especially considering that I was in FL, land of a million Porsches). And sure enough, I found my 07 a mere 30 minutes away, and at a more than fair price. It was a little rough from baking in the Florida sun, but mechanically excellent. I got over there as quickly as I could after making contact with the seller and bought it on the spot. I drove it back to SC and fell in love with 911s all over again on the way. I've since done the wrap, changed the wheels, updated the stereo, and fixed a few other small odds and ends. Otherwise, she's a driver (nickname: the Quaaken (ribbit in German is quaak); I briefly had yellow headlights on it, so it looked like a frog). What encouraged you to join the Porsche Club of America: See above, lol. I've been a de facto member since birth and attending the local club events are some of my favorite childhood memories. What are your favorite Regional &/or National events: I've gotten into HPDEs lately, joining Zone 2 at VIR, and Niagara at Watkins Glen (and Potomac there once) multiple times. By far the best way to drive your Porsche like you mean it, in a safe, fun, and friendly environment. Doesn't hurt that we get to use world-class racetracks, too! The Chesapeake Challenge and Crab Feast are of course classics, too.

What is your favorite PCA memory: My first Zone 2 HPDE at VIR. Just an amazing 3 days of driving and Porsche people, top to bottom. Made a few new friends that weekend and we've stayed in touch ever since. What advice about PCA or Chesapeake would you give to new members: Go to any event; don't just be a magazine member. Really! Everyone is so friendly, and the events are always fun. For example, I went to the covid-delayed Taycan "launch" earlier this year. It was a wonderful gathering of Porsche enthusiasts at a local brewery marveling at Porsche's latest magnificence. I'd also highly recommend at least attending (not necessarily driving in) one HPDE. Porsches are made to be driven, and the enthusiasm and educational opportunity HPDEs provide in terms of truly understanding a Porsche lack adequate measure. If money was no object, what Porsche would you love to own and why: Tough call, but either a 550 Spyder or a 918 Spyder.

AFTER HOLIDAY PARTY & YANKEE SWAP
AFTER HOLIDAY PARTY & YANKEE SWAP PCA-Chesapeake Region Come celebrate the end of 2021 and welcome in 2022! Join us at Turf Valley on March 26th for our annual After Holiday Party and awards ceremony, followed by the highly anticipated Yankee Swap conducted by “The Bob and Manny Show,” with your hosts, Bob Gutjahr and Manny Alban! The Chesapeake Region has established a reputation for the finest and fiercest Yankee Swap in PCA, one that has been copied by other regions, but never quite duplicated. A “Gift Exchange” is merely a mild description of the feeding frenzy that takes hold at this triple steal event. Chesapeake Region, despite being below the Mason Dixon Line, puts the “Yankee” into Yankee Swap…. The good stuff is coveted, hoarded and only grudgingly given up under duress. Turf Valley is a hotel & spa with rooms available. Anyone wishing to stay at the resort for the night should contact the hotel directly to make a reservation and let them know you are attending the Chesapeake Region PCA event. This event regularly sells out quickly-so, register early! Event Details Date: March 26, 2022 24

Member Profile: Cheryl & Claude Taylor James B. Beavan III Member Names: Cheryl and Claude Taylor Car’s: currently; 2020 base Macan, and 2003 Boxster S We have owned a 1983 911 SC, 2003 Boxster base, 1995 911 Carrera, 2013 Boxster base Committees: Cheryl- Social Chair, Secretary, Vice President, Zone 2 representative. Claude Auto cross Chair, Vice President, President. I left out that my first position with Chesapeake was that of Insurance Chair. I joined the club in 2002 after seeing a newsletter in my 911SC. All I did was attend the autocrosses as I was too shy to interact and speak up….Then Cheryl came along and joined in 2006 when she bought her first Boxster and I told her I wanted to do more with the club. That was all it took. We went to a board meeting and by the time we left I was insurance chair and Cheryl was secretary. The more we did, the more active and involved we became. We made many friends and were active recruiters of chairs and committee positions for the region. When it came time to buy a vehicle, what made you choose your Porsche and is this your first Porsche (if not please detail prior Porsche's): Claude’s first was a 1983 911 SC. I was going through a midlife crisis and was surfing on eBay. I fell in love with the car, and it was located 20 minutes from where I lived. I barely even test drove it, fell in love, and purchased it on the spot. Cheryl’s was a

2003 Boxster Base. She recently sold her home and moved in with me. Before even buying another house the first stop was Hunt Valley Porsche and Cheryl wanted a convertible; the 2003 Boxster met the requirements. What encouraged you to join the Porsche Club of America: I found an old newsletter in the 911 when I purchased the car, and I’ve always been a car guy…so I had to check it out. What are your favorite Regional &/or National events: Parade, tech tactics east, DE’s, Rennsport, Rolex24 – When Cheryl became Zone Rep in 2014 we went to our first Parade and attended all during her tenure as Zone Rep. We’ve been attending the Rolex 24-hour race in Daytona since 2007 and of course spend time in the PCA hospitality tent during the weekend reconnecting with friends from the club. We’ve attended 4 Rennsport Reunions, caravanned to Petit Lemans in Atlanta the year they had a fuel shortage in the south. We followed Manny Alban and Pete Tremper with extra fuel in 2 five-gallon containers in the frunk of the car in fear of not being able to gas up once arriving. As well we caravanned to Montreal to experience an F1 race up close and personal. We’ve visited both

the Los Angeles and Atlanta Porsche Experience centers. In 2014, when attending the Parade in Monterey, Cheryl won a 2-day Porsche driving experience at Barber Motorsports. Of course, she gifted me with it and I attended the sport driving school in October of that year. What is your favorite PCA memory: too many to list, Monterey Parade, they always say the best job in PCA is the Zone Rep, but Cheryl always said the best job in PCA is being the spouse of the zone rep, all the benefits and none of the work. What advice about PCA or Chesapeake would you give to new members: Get involved! We have one of the best regions with a strong volunteer base, but we are always looking for new volunteers. If money was no object, what Porsche would you love to own and why: A GT3 – it’s a great track car.

Tour & Rally 2021 Recap Aniano Arao
PCA Chesapeake's Tour & Rally Events in 2021 By Aniano Arao PCA Chesapeake's Tour & Rally Committee had a busy year. My fellow co-chair Randy Moss, four other driving enthusiasts and I organized 14 driving tours and one gimmick rally in 2021. We pulled them off with the invaluable assistance of other fellow club members who served as group lead drivers, lead navigators, sweepers and marshals. This gallery is a brief look back at the 15 tour and rally events we enjoyed in 2021, each represented by one photo. I devised eight of them, while seven were designed by four tour and rally masters: Ron Farb, Hank Lucas, Jim Hemig and Steve Graham. Altogether, the events attracted 381 cars and 677 people.
(1) April 18: Catoctin Mountain Tour – 1st edition (36 cars/60 people)
(2) April 25: Catoctin Mountain Tour – 2nd edition (32 cars/52 people)

(15) Dec. 19: “Kindertime Toy Drive & Linda’s Legacy Charity Event” Driving Tour (11 cars/21 people) Our thanks go not only to the tour and rally masters who made the events possible, but also to our wives, who assisted us: Myrna Arao, Loretta Farb, Ellen Lucas, Shelly Hemig and Janice Graham; as well as to Ron’s son-in-law, Leo Gutierrez. Moreover, we thank the couples who kindly agreed to help the tour masters lead the various groups of cars, in some cases, more than once: Larry and Jennifer Robinson; Eric and Kim Tipton; Frank and Susan Tedeschi; Lee and Claire Rock; Rich and Kathy Ehrlich; Steve and Marsha Buss; Mark and Dawn Miller; James and Anna Beavan; as well as Bob Bank and son Andrew. Special thanks go to all the couples who served as sweepers, especially Frank and Susan Tedeschi, as well as Stan and Jennifer Kukula – who kindly assisted tour participants whose cars broke down. Finally, my thanks go to Concours Co-Chair Doug Ehmann and Francesca for joining me in organizing the Sept. 5 Porsche Heritage Concours & Tour, and to Skip Conrey for kindly hosting the event at his Valhalla Farm in Marriottsville. PCA Juniors
What is the PCA Juniors program? ✓ PCA Juniors is a program for Porsche enthusiasts under
age 18. ✓ Participants must be registered by an active PCA mem-
ber. ✓ It’s not just the cars… and now it’s not just the grown-
ups! ✓ With our new PCA Juniors program, PCA is about the kids too!
The PCA Juniors program has been created so kids can enjoy PCA events, learn about Porsches and build the enthusiasm that runs through all of the Porsche Club of America. Who is eligible? Any child under age 18 who is registered by a current PCA member can participate in the program. (Note: This is not a PCA Membership.) What will the child receive? PCA Juniors will receive a welcome package that includes an ageappropriate gift and PCA Juniors ID badge. We look forward to developing the program and its features over time. What does it cost to register? It’s FREE! Participants must be registered by an active PCA member, and there is no cost to join!
