A

s the year comes to an end, I think about all the things for which I am grateful. The camaraderie with you, the PCA/SBR members, is one that I treasure. I thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Vice President and Interim President in 2011.

There are several board members and event organizers retiring this year that I would like to recognize. Unsung heroes like Nadine Tracy, our secretary for the past three years, is simply the best. Steve Kaller, our treasurer, has been instrumental in guiding our club to its current fiscal health. Joe Boucher, our official Rally Master for the past 28 years, along with Joe Schneider, provided a Rally School and professional rally experience second to none. Jim Brown, our insurance chair, kept us out of harm’s way by making certain every event had the proper insurance coverage. Martin Keller and Dan Byers went above and beyond the call of duty by staging five Autocross events this year, culminating with “Cones For Homes,” a PCA/SBR Habitat for Humanity charity event that raised $4,500 for the cause. John Alfenito, though not retiring, must be applauded for his vision and artistic sense publishing our monthly newsletter Der Auspuff. Chet & Joan Yabitsu have tirelessly handled distribution efforts for this publication and with the able assistance of Mike Pomerantz, are responsible for its timely delivery. 2011 – What a year indeed! We kicked it off with a three-day adventure to Las Vegas; joined the Woodie Club for a run to the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles; reveled in Twisties & Wildflowers; were challenged by a gimmick rally; stuffed ourselves at the perennial favorite chili cook-off; star gazed on Mt. Pinos; experienced the always wonderful progressive dinner; had a James Dean moment with the Rebel Without A Cause Run to Cholame; were dazzled at the Concours d’Elegance; in awe at the four-day event to Zion & Bryce Canyon National Parks; had autocross events, R.U.F. activities, PMS gatherings, and the list goes on and on. We are truly blessed to be a part of this active region. Thanks to the board of directors and the hard working volunteer members who make it all happen. Be sure to join us for the final event of the year, our 2011 Holiday Party on December 10th at the Four Points Sheraton, Ventura Harbor. My wife Beverly and I wish you abundance, happiness, and peace in a New Year filled with hope. Happy Holidays!

ichael’s reminiscing about 2011 and all the wonderful adventures we shared together is the perfect introduction to my (not so subtle) plug for this month’s Auspuff cover. As in year’s past, I decided to end the year with a salute to the year, itself. Looking back over all 12 covers, hopefully you can quickly remember a trip, a drive, an activity in which you participated this year that brought you enjoyment and fun. We are blessed to have such a wonderful group of members in our club. The many activities throughout the year, each one a new chance to get together and rekindle old friendships or create new ones, will continue into 2012 and beyond. It’s great to be a part of it. I hope you agree. Until next month...

Camarillo Breakfast

November Gets Off To A Chilly Start STORY & PHOTOS BY JOHN ALFENITO

A

blast of winter air came through Southern California the day before our November 5th Camarillo Breakfast, dropping some precipitation and the temperatures. Consequently, a group of 110 warmly-bundled participants and 49 Porsches braved the chilly morning air to gather at the Way-Point Café. President Michael Brovsky called the business portion of the meeting to order, introducing SBR member and author Randy Leffingwell. Randy’s new book, “The Complete 911,” has been released, and several of the featured cars are those of club members. Randy was happily autographing his book for friends and fans, alike.

New members Diana Palmer and Brian Slager, along with their Shitzu, Leah.

Membership Chair Janice Herndon gave us the “numbers,” and introduced new members Brian Slager and Diana Palmer from Santa Barbara. Brian has a 2001 Boxster and Diana drives a 1972 911E Targa. They also brought along their Shitzu, Leah, who seemed to be enjoying breakfast on the patio. Doreen Pankow, Activities Co-Chair, promoted the busy, upcoming slate of SBR events, including the November 19th Bouquet Canyon Run to Wolf Creek Brewery in Valencia. The annual SBR Holiday Dinner Party on December 10th has a few spots left. Jeanne McNair spoke about the upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Weekend trip to Palm Springs. Full details on this great gathering are on page 15. Be sure to secure your place now for the January 13-16 adventure. Activities Co-Chair Ted Lighthizer reminded everyone about the giant Motor4Toys charity toy drive on December 4th. He’s hoping for a large SBR member participation for this event, and would like to bring a sizable number of gifts as our donation. Members are being encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys, valued at $10 or more, to all November events. Ted will collect them and make sure they are delivered to the Motor4Toys site in December. This toy drive, which gets larger and larger each year, is expected to be the biggest gathering of cars on the West Coast in 2011. =

As always, the cars are the stars at our monthly Camarillo Breakfast meetings...Porsches everywhere you look!

Santa Barbara Breakfast

Small Crowd, Big Surf! STORY & PHOTOS BY JOHN ALFENITO

H

igh tide and rough seas made for some big surf as a small contingent of dedicated SBR members gathered at Moby Dick’s for our November breakfast. Attendance was well below normal with many regulars opting to attend the 29th running of the El Camino Real Rally, which kicked off at 9:00 a.m. the same morning. President Michael Brovsky welcomed everyone, introducing Walt Branscome and Steve Finburg from Santa Barbara Auto Group, Henry Hinck of Schneider Autohaus, and our own celebrity author/photographer Randy Leffingwell, who was there distributing and signing copies of his new book “The Complete Book of Porsche 911.” Beverly Brovsky, filling in for Membership Chair Janice Herndon (who was at the rally), gave us the numbers: 27 attendees, driving 16 Porsches. Beverly also introduced new member Eric Carrier from Santa Barbara, who was attending his first SBR event.

New SBR member Eric Carrier of Santa Barbara, attending his first club event - our Santa Barbara Breakfast.

Parked among the Porsches on the pier was a Racing Yellow 2012 Carrera S (Type 991). Brought to breakfast by Andrew Evans of AficionAuto Mobile Detailing (presumably with the blessing of PCNA), the newest Porsche was part of the media event Porsche Corporation of North America was holding in Santa Barbara to introduce the 991 to the automotive press. Randy Leffingwell, who had the opportunity to drive the new Carrera the day before, gave us his impressions. He felt the 991 represented “a broader change from the 997 than the 997 had been from the 996.” He raved about the new wider track in the front, the improved egonomics of the interior, and especially the newly retuned exhaust sound, of which Porsche is extremely proud. It was great fun for the small crowd to be able to examine the new Carrera S up close, and hear the driving impressions of someone who is familiar (now) with all seven generations of Porsche’s signature vehicle. As the skies thickened, and more rain threatened to fall, we said our goodbyes and headed off our separate ways. =

The R.U.F. Report

R.U.F. Visits Guide Dogs of America, Then Pays Respects At A Porsche Cemetery STORY & PHOTOS BY NICOLAS LIAKAS

O

ctober 20, 2011 was a day when 20 of our “Retired & Unemployed Folks” (R.U.F.) had plenty to say! Most of the “saying” sounded like OOOHs and AAAHs, as we marveled at the amazing abilities, training and cuteness of dogs intended to serve the needs of blind and visually impaired individuals. Following lunch (or late breakfast) at the Fiddlers Three Restaurant in Sylmar, we visited and toured the facilities of Guide Dogs of America (GDA). This organization is located on 7.5 acres in Sylmar (in the north San Fernando Valley) and has the mission to provide guide

dogs and instruction in their use, free of charge, to blind and visually impaired men and women from the United States and Canada so that they may continue to pursue their goals with increased mobility and independence. Joseph Jones, Sr. founded it over 60 years ago with the help of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. When Mr. Jones became blind, he considered all his options and decided his mobility needs would best be met by using a guide dog. He applied to all the existing schools, but he was declined because of his “advanced age.” He was only 57 years old. This led to the establishment of the International Guiding Eyes organization

At lunch (l-r): Brian Rubino, Joan & Chet Yabitsu, and Linda Rubino

in 1948. IGE was one of the first guide dog schools to be founded by a blind individual. It was also one of the first schools to adopt a policy of no upper age discrimination. The name was changed to Guide Dogs of America in 1992. Reg Fear, our docent for the tour, met us at the entrance. We were escorted into the large conference room where we viewed a brief video depicting the services provided and testimonials from recipients of the trained guide dogs. At its conclusion, Dixie Gadapee, the kennel manager, joined us. She brought with her a most lovable and obedient friend, a Labrador Retriever named Barron, who recently “graduated” from the training program. Baron quickly seized and stole every heart in the room with his personality and skills. Ms. Gadapee explained that GDA offers three main programs: breeding, puppy raising, and training. It breeds its own guide dogs to provide the best quality dog possible for the blind and visually impaired guide dog recipients. The puppies are placed with volunteer Puppy Raisers to learn basic obedience, to be socialized and learn the indispensable commands, and to receive lots of love. Puppies remain in these foster homes until they are about 18 months old. Licensed instructors then provide the guide dog training and matching of the dogs with Continued on page 12

R.U.F. Visits GDA...Continued from page 11 their new visually impaired partner. As to the latter, Dixie discussed the process by which dogs are matched to suitable future owners. GDA creates a detailed profile of the prospective owner, as well as of the nominated dog, to make certain the two are compatible. It was interesting to learn that prospective owners must first play-act with humans posing as guide dogs to test the owner’s skills and willingness to share his/her life with a graduate of the program.

GDA Kennel Manager Dixie Gadapee, Barron the Lab, and Reg Fear, our docent.

We were not able to enter the kennels because the very young puppies were too susceptible to human-borne diseases. We did, however, watch via closed circuit television the interaction of six newborns with their mother. The obvious affection shared by the group brought huge smiles to the faces of even the most hardened R.U.F.ians. After this scene, no one could claim that he/she was a “tough guy.” At departure time, about half of our group headed south on Glenoaks Boulevard to the headquarters of L.A. Dismantlers, one of our loyal and proud advertisers in Der Auspuff. Here, the sense was one of visiting a Porsche cemetery as the two-acre site was jam-packed with cannibalized shells of Porsches that had

met an untimely demise. We were shown the guts of the operation and witnessed the removal or dissection of parts for sale to body and auto repair shops that are located worldwide. There was a sense of sorrow – hard to explain – as Porsche models similar to ours were stripped of all content and the battered exterior shells were stacked on top of dozens more anchored to the stacks and racks located outside in the front yard. The products and services provided by this company, however, serve a special need and purpose, and we are all beneficiaries of its efforts. At the end of the afternoon, it turned out to be yet another interesting and exciting adventure for our group of Retired and Unemployed Folks. =

The R.U.F.ians were both amazed and appalled at the sight of so many Porsches that had met untimely demises. But, at L.A. Dismantlers, they live on through donated parts.

Zone 8 Rally School: The Two Joes Share Secrets of Success Joe Schneider, Art Grimmitt, and Joe Boucher

STORY AND EVENT PHOTOS BY DOREEN PANKOW

S

anta Barbara Region’s Rally School at Schneider Autohaus in Santa Barbara was well attended by 18 participants – nine driver/navigator teams. Before the class began, Art Grimmitt made a presentation on behalf of PCA/SBR to Joe Boucher and Joe Schneider to thank them for more than 27 years of rally support for our region and all of Zone 8. Two very special bottles of wine from Longoria Winery were given to “the two Joes” with our sincere appreciation.

Class is in session, and everyone is paying attention.

Herb Lutz, Mary Ellen Ladd, Joe Boucher and Phil Reese

Linda Reese, Joe Schneider and Mary Ellen Ladd

Then it was down to work, as Joe and Joe handed out copies of the indecipherable Zone 8 Rally Rules, which most of us hadn’t even glanced at prior to the class. The terminology looked like Greek to those of us who were in the novice class, so our instructors patiently took us through the rules. Both Joes entertained us with stories of their own experiences doing rallies, revealing some of their mistakes. Hearing their stories, we all felt a little better knowing that even expert Rally Masters sometimes have difficulty interpreting rally instructions. The two Joes wrapped up the class only after all of our questions had been answered. Even though some of us were reluctant to admit it, we were still confused on a few points. But, we were excited about heading out to practice our new-found skills on a 45-minute test course. With three pages of instructions in hand, we taped our assigned car numbers to our respective car windows, and drove to the starting point. Each vehicle had a driver, a navigator, stop watches, post-it notes, clipboards and pencils. We were ready to see how close we could come to the perfect score of zero. There were two checkpoints along the way to monitor our time, and everyone successfully completed the course and arrived at Max’s Restaurant, though not exactly in the same order as we departed. Leave it to the Joes to build in a few tricky instructions! After calculating our times for the two legs of the course and comparing them to the perfect times, John Grusd and Elizabeth Wehrmeister achieved the lowest score, only 15 seconds off the ideal time. Janice Herndon and Doreen Pankow came in second, and Rob Brandt and Tiffany Carson were third. We ended the day with a great lunch, and talked about all the things we would do differently next week when we all ran the actual El Camino Real XXVIII Rally. Everyone attending this Rally School learned a lot and came away with high hopes of achieving perfection on rally day! =

January 13-16, 2012 Escape To Beautiful Palm Springs

O

ur 5th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend getaway, January 13-16, 2012, will take us to the lovely desert town of Palm Springs. We’ve arranged special rate accommodations at the Hyatt Regency in the downtown village of old Palm Springs. This beautiful hotel is centrally located on Palm Canyon Drive within walking distance of many shops, galleries and restaurants, and was the subject of a $15 million renovation in 2010. All rooms are suites available at the special rate of $129.00 per night with reserved covered parking at a 50% discount.

Members interested in playing golf can do so at the private O’Donnell Golf Club adjacent to the hotel. It’s a nine hole course at which Hyatt guests have privileges for reduced green fees. In the early evening, we will meet at the hotel for a welcome reception with hors d’oeuvres and a no-host bar.

Our departure time of 9:30 a.m. will get us to Palm Springs early enough for members to enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants near the hotel, and then spend the afternoon shopping, exploring or relaxing by the pool.

Saturday morning we’ll take a beautiful drive through Palm Desert and the Garner Valley on our way up to the picturesque town of Idyllwild, which is located at 5500 feet elevation. Come prepared for the warmth of the desert floor as well as the cool crispness of the mountains. We will return via a different scenic route and enjoy a group dinner that evening at the Hyatt. On Sunday morning, we’ll travel as a group to Joshua Tree National Park, known for its myriad of namesake trees as well as spectacular boulder stacks and fan palm oases. This unique park is comprised of two deserts: the Colorado

and the Mojave, home to abundant wildlife, including big horn sheep, desert tortoises, roadrunners and desert iguanas. There are many interesting sights including Barker Dam, Lost Horse Mine, Keys View, and HiddenValley. We will visit Keys View (at over 5000 feet) with its spectacular vistas, including the San Andreas fault, after which we will go to the Hidden Valley picnic area for a catered lunch. Hidden Valley also offers spectacular scenery, an interesting hike, and the opportunity to see the many rock climbers who frequent this park. STORY BY MARTIN KELLER EVENT PHOTOS BY JOHN ALFENITO

T

he October 29 “Cones For Homes Autocross” was the last autocross of the year for the Santa Barbara Region, and it was a great success. This event was put together as a fund raiser for Habitat For Humanity, our region’s designated charity for 2011. As Autocross Co-Chairs, Dan Byers and I set a goal of $3000, but, thanks to the kindness and generosity of all the event participants and volunteers, we were able to exceed that goal. A total of 47 people pre-registered for the event with many of the participants donating additional monies beyond the registration fees, all in support of Habitat For Humanity in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. This unsolicited generosity tells me that a lot of people think very highly of Habitat and all the wonderful work they do in the community. When the day arrived, we had a total of 43 participants who came out to the Camarillo Airport to test their abilities. For a video of a run through the course, use this link: http://vimeo.com/31316540. The course was designed with a number of challenges for all the drivers: from control and placement, to acceleration and heavy braking, to technical maneuvering, all to be accomplished without hitting any cones (each cone adds two seconds to your time) while completing the course as quickly as possible. The circuit was designed for times in the neighborhood of 55 to 65 seconds. Your autocross team figured the 55-second-mark would be approximately the best possible time. As for actually setting up this type of event, the autocross team (Dan Byers, Chester Yabitsu, Darren Friedman, Lloyd Martinez, Mike Furnish, Mike & Karen Turek, Ted Lighthizer,

Bill Rodgers, William Byrd, Tom Marshall, Rocky Carver, Ken Whitney, Richard Shaw, Jeffrey Parker, Jeffrey Merrick, William Griswold, and I) usually sets it up the afternoon before. We do this so we can test and refine the layout, but that was not to be the case this time because the site was being used by a film crew the day before our event. So, the autocross team decided to show up bright and early the morning of the event to set up. And I mean early, around 5:00 a.m., even before the gate crew. Jim Brown, Dan Long, David Stone, and Ted Lighthizer were on site to get the participants checked in. Anyone watching us from the airport tower probably wondered just what was going on, as our crew, armed with flashlights, and following the headlights of a pickup truck, methodically laid out the complex autocross course. By the time the participants were ready for their 8:00 a.m. track walk, we were ready. As a side-note, I have to say running the course at speed to test it in the dark, guided only by my car’s headlights, was exhilarating, to say the least. Meanwhile, the registration team (Janice Herndon and Nadine Tracy) were setting up the timing area table under our popup, and answering questions. The Tech Crew of Chris Andropoulas, Peter Bower, and Nick Rettie got set up to check all the cars and drivers. All of the participants were able to get in two practice sessions in the morning before being fed lunch. Once again, autocross favorite Q-Time BBQ (Aaron and his crew) dished up a delicious meal. The official timed runs kicked off at 1:00 p.m. The autoX timing crew of Jeffrey Parker, Jeffrey Merrick, and non-SBR crew member Nick Sibersky saw firsthand how the times were

The Cones For Homes Autocross course: technical, but fast with three exciting crossovers! The times got better as the day went on.

Robert Spery in his Acura Integra smoked the field with an overall best time of 54.020 seconds. He also had the third best time.

dropping for all of the participants from their morning practice runs. The official run times included “cones hit,” and were now getting down into the 55 to 65-second times we had hoped for. Many drivers were now making “clean runs” with no cone hits, which is always good for the cone chasers, who have to replace the displaced cones before the next car comes by on the course. The fastest time of the day was 54.020 seconds with the average time being 60 seconds. Most drivers were having good clean timed runs, showing a lot of improvement from the practice sessions earlier in the day. I would like to thank the large number of people that worked in the background to help put this autocross together. Their hard work, before, during and after, makes it all look so easy, allowing so many people to have fun with their cars in a safe and controlled environment. Without this help and support, events like this would not be possible; so thank you all! Many of our participants are already looking forward to our 2012 autocross season, and we hope to provide them with more opportunities to

test their driving abilities and their cars next year. Through a great, concerted effort by everyone on our “autocross team,” we were able to tally a $4500.00 donation to Habitat For Humanity! A special thanks to the County of Ventura Department of Airports for giving us the opportunity to use a safe and secure place to put on events like this. We hope that we can continue to work together to provide this type of event in the future. With the completion of the “Cones For Homes” autocross, I am retiring as Autocross Co-Chair for the Santa Barbara Region. My hard-working co-chair, Dan Byers, will be the solo Autocross Chair for PCA/SBR in 2012, and he has several events planned for the autocross season. =

At the timing table (l-r): Jeff Parker, Jeffrey Merrick, and Autocross Co-Chair Martin Keller.

STORY BY JOE BOUCHER PHOTOS BY NICOLAS LIAKAS

T

here was a threat of rain for the 28th running of El Camino Real, Santa Barbara Region’s Zone 8 rally, on Saturday November 12. Thirty-three brave souls showed up at the starting point and were treated to a wonderful day of sunshine while driving the backroads of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Actually, we had 11 cars of ralliers and 11 workers. David & Susan Stone were our registrars, and we had 8 checkpoint workers, including three guest workers from the Santa Monica Sports Car Club. Due to the lower than expected turnout, we had more than ample trophies. Cars came from the San Diego Region and as far away as Tucson, AZ. Santa Barbara Region has enjoyed a reputation for high quality rallies over the years.

four hours, and ended at Max’s Restaurant on State Street in Santa Barbara. This popular spot also hosted the crowd after the Rally School on November 5th (see page 13). Where did we go? The odometer calibration portion of the run showed ralliers roads that many had not seen previously, eventually entering U.S. 101 North at the Camarillo Springs onramp. From there, we visited the park above Ventura’s municipal buildings known as La Loma Del Cruz, where we found a great view of the islands. Next we drove a seldom used road to just below Lake Casitas, and after a short, but beautiful, drive through the outskirts of Ojai, we headed toward Santa Barbara by way of California 150. The avocado orchards of Gobernador Canyon brought us in the back door of Carpinteria. The timed part of the rally ended near the beach, after exploring the full length of Padaro Lane. From there it was only six miles to lunch and the awards .

Five novice cars (drivers and navigators) were treated to a course with no traps. Six more experienced cars ran the trap course. We covered 96 miles of predominatly backroads over a period of under

Many thanks to our excellent checkpoint workers: Jim Paden, Dick Douglass, Jane Uribe, Joe Schneider, Bob Roe, Suzi Sheller, Leo & Freya Oliver, Ron Yttri, Control 1, and David & Susan Stone, our registrars. =

he news was too good to be true. After three previous iterations at Lime Rock and Daytona, Rennsport Reunion number four was going to be on the west coast at Laguna Seca Raceway! Legendary Porsche racing cars from 550 Spyders to GT3RS Cup cars, all in one place at one time. Logistics, expense and time had prevented me from travelling east, but there was no way I was going to miss it this time. Of course, son Chris wanted to go...slightly surprising was Pamuela’s enthusiasm. We arrived at the track Saturday morning, listening to the wonderful music of high performance engines at full song. Even though the weather was low overcast and breezy, the sights and sounds were better than imagined. Porsche cars as far as the eye could see in every direction. Just wandering through the spectators’ parking lots was fun, thanks to the efforts to sort the cars by model. Lines of Turbos next to GT3s, 997s, 993s, etc., etc., every color combination imaginable, seemingly with little or no duplication. It was like a Camarillo breakfast on super-steroids. Our first stop was the Porsche factory display, featuring the North American debut of the 2012 Carrera 991 model. Cars from the Porsche museum included the unique 16 cylinder 917, Type 935/2.0 Baby and 918 Hybrid. Fans of the animated “Cars” movies were thrilled to see Sally Carrera in all of her full-scale beauty. Naturally, Porsche Design merchandise was selling briskly, with event specific items being the most popular. Lines to get into the Laguna Seca souvenir stores stretched for hours. Seemingly everyone wanted the coveted RR IV logo hats, shirts, posters and pins. Vendor rows filled the infield, selling Porsche merchandise of every description. Artwork booths were very popular. With enough money and wall-space, one could have their very own museum. Wandering through the venue we encountered many fellow SBR enthusiasts, all of whom shared info about their favorite cars. Rich Buchner, Robin Liebes, Jeff Parker and Becky Lundberg hosted a delicious barbecue lunch attended by two dozen ravenous members. As usual, the quality of the food was only exceeded by the camaraderie of the crowd. Thanks to our gracious hosts. Mike Jacobs and Dave Mosseson kept the crowd entertained with their spirited bantering. Mike looked great in his stylish, sleek and functional backpack, reportedly earned at great personal sacrifice. Becky Lundberg and Joan Yabitsu were looking forward to taking a few laps in Jeff ’s GT3, later reported to be a once-in-alifetime experience. Rich also was slated to drive his 930 in the parade laps. Jeff Parker and Chet Yabitsu visited the Race Car Classic on Sunday, with over 200 Porsche racing cars on display to benefit the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation and the University of California, San Francisco Thoracic Oncology Program.

PCA had a large presence at the event, with over 250 volunteers helping out. In the center of the track was “Cayman Island,” where only PCA members could see an impressive display of our favorite reptiles. Joe Carastro’s RUF 3400K had an honored place in the group. PCNA did a technical presentation on the new Carrera, and the tent was packed with excited enthusiasts. Predictably, the new car is more powerful, more fuel efficient, with new comfort and performance features. Styling of the new car remains evolutionary, with a couple of significant departures from the 997. Contrary to previous practice, the new sunroof retracts up and over the roof (!), with the rear spoiler completely redesigned in shape and function. Significant SBR cars were showcased, with Wayne & Houri Greko showing their special 1974 Carrera, plus Tony Samojen with his tangerine first production 914-6. Houri was excited to have her photo taken with none other than Wolfgang Porsche. Tony ran his 914-6GT in the Group 2 race. Randy Leffingwell had his premier signing of his new book, “The 911.” It took place next to our local World Class Motoring vendor booth. Some SBR members were among the lucky 60 people who got a special 10-minute showing of the new (and “secret”) 918 Spyder model. The security was very tight; to illustrate, any exposed cell phones were confiscated; owners of cameras were told to place

the cover over the lens. However, there was one vendor who was selling an accurate 1:18 scale model for $90; go figure. This was the third unveiling of this model; the first being in Germany, the second in Manhattan, and the third at this Rennsport. The model was built partially with cardboard, but only a keen eye could detect this. Currently, parts are being procured to build the prototypes starting in January. They will undergo a six-month testing program, and then commence production in September, 2013. The projected cost of each vehicle is north of $800K, so starting saving your nickels, folks. On Sunday, the day of the Race Car Classic, the crowd was noticeably smaller. After spending several hours in the pits, overload began to set in. Each aisle was packed with magnificent displays: 917s, 935s, 550s, RS Spyders, 956s, 962s, 906s, 908s, 356s, and all flavors of 911. How does one take it all in? An event of such scope and magnitude cannot be adequately reported on, nor described. You simply have to be there to understand. My expectations were very high, having read with great interest about previous Rennsport Reunions. Due to the hard work of hundreds of dedicated people, including many from our region, my expectations were greatly exceeded. Thanks to all the participants, workers and volunteers for a magical weekend. Your efforts are very much appreciated. = EVENT PHOTOS FROM PCNA AND WAYNE GREKO

The new Carrera model 991 made its North American debut.

Sunday’s Race Car Classic was a fan favorite.

Even the parking lot was a sight to behold.

Tech questions & answers from the technical experts at pca.org 997 | Wheels & Tires

I just bought a new 911 Black Edition. I found a nail in the rear tire today. 295/30 ZR19! Can it be fixed? Really?

911 SC, 3.0 and 2.7 | Transmission

Model: 911 SC TARGA, Year:1980 Is there a recommended transmission fluid that facilitates smoother shifting of gears and eliminates some of the “notchiness” found in the 915 transmission? We have had good luck with Swepco 201 gear oil. Keep in mind that if your synchros and operating sleeves are worn, the gear oil will only do so much. answered by Chris Powell [PNW]

The tire may be able to be patched depending on where the nail is. Generally speaking, if the nail is in the center portion of the tread, (not in the innermost or outermost tread blocks) it is a candidate for a patch. Porsche does not allow tire repairs as it can affect the structural integrity of the tire. This means a Z rated tire may no longer be capable of maintaining high speeds for any length of time. For this reason, most Porsche dealers do not offer tire repair services but most tire shops do. For a street car, I see no reason not to patch a tire for normal road use. I even know guys that patch track tires but I’m not a fan of it. Do not use a plug. Plugs are temporary fixes and often leak. If you choose to repair the tire have it patched.

The key is hard to turn from the mechanical section of the ignition switch going bad. The ignition switch assembly should be replaced with the latest one available by Porsche as a complete unit that includes the electrical section also. The current key with tumblers would be transfered over to the new assembly.
