I
expect all of you are looking forward to the PCA Porsche Parade as much as I am. Ted and I plan to participate in a variety of events including the Welcome Party, the Concours d’Elegance, the T.S.D Rally, the Canepa Design tour, the Concours Banquet and the Gimmick Rally, as well as some of the fun Hospitality events. It will be a wonderful opportunity to meet Porsche lovers and car enthusiasts from across the country. I expect to see a lot of SBR members attending, so don’t forget to pre-register so that you can customize your trip to maximize your enjoyment and drive on some roads you haven’t seen before. I thought you might enjoy hearing about my amazing experience when I sold my 1990 Porsche in April. I purchased my 964 C2 in 1997 in Portland, Oregon, where it was my daily driver. When Ted and I moved to Southern California in 2000, we decided to minimize the miles on the car so primarily drove the Porsche to SBR’s breakfast meetings and fun driving events. I hadn’t thought about selling my Porsche until Ted learned that SBR member Gary Weaver had just purchased a beautiful 2005 911 Cabriolet Turbo and was possibly thinking about selling his 1995 993 Coupe. Ted and I have always admired Gary’s Porsche as it has the fixed tail aero package added on the rear spoiler, is midnight blue in color and is still an air-cooled engine like my 964. So I decided it was time to sell my Porsche.
In asking other members about how to price it, SBR member Art Grimmett suggested I check the Pelican website. I was surprised to find 12 pages of 911’s for sale, but only one 1990 964 C2 was listed. So I decided to post an ad on their website, including a picture of the car. Within twenty minutes, our phone started ringing practically non-stop for four hours, and I also received a lot of emails asking about the car. Two couples came over that afternoon to test- drive the car and offered to buy it at full price, contingent on inspection. Normally, that would have been fine, but I told them that I had a gentleman from Santa Barbara who had also called and offered to buy the car “as is” without an inspection. So I told the couples that I’d call them back if his offer fell through. I called the Santa Barbara gentleman who wanted to purchase it “as is” and told him the car was his if he could pay for it that day. He arrived about 7:30 pm, and it was already dark. When I tried to show him the engine and the interior of the car, he stated he didn’t need to see anything on the car or even take it for a test-drive as he was buying it. I’m delighted to report that the car sold at full asking price in four hours from the time I posted it on the Pelican website. So if you’re planning to sell a car, you might try listing it on their website. I called Gary Weaver the next day, stating that I was ready to buy his Porsche, which he fortunately agreed to sell. So I am now the proud owner of a beautiful 1995 993 Coupe. You can see a picture of both Gary’s and my “new” Porsches on page 32. The photo was taken on April 26th at the end of the Gimmick Rally at the Conejo Park in Thousand Oaks. I just love my new Porsche!

O
ur club is fortunate to have so many members willing to assist in the production of this magazine each month. A lot of work goes on behindthe-scenes making sure each of our many events is covered in these pages. Every activity needs someone to write the story; and of course, there must be pictures! We’re especially lucky to have a cadre of fine photographers in our ranks. You see their work every month right here in Der Auspuff. Some, like Ron Willliams, are actually professional photographers, but many are not. Most, like me, are simply people who love to take pictures.

I know I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating: I welcome all submissions of photography to this publication. I like to think our standards are high (I mean, just look at the photos in this month’s issue), but that should only serve as an inspiration for you to contribute in the future. AUSPUFF JUNE 2014
Plus, it’s not the camera, it’s the picture. For example, a few shots in this edition were captured with my trusty iPhone 5, including the sunset image above (from our movie night at Rusnak) and the close-up photo on this month’s cover! So, point and shoot...and then, submit!

THE GIMMICK RALLY
I
n the final e-mail we sent out to the nervous Gimmick Rally participants, we included the following important information: “Don’t forget to bring a writing utensil and a clipboard and two good brains.” We heard from one person right away who wrote, “We have everything listed and ready to go except for the last item.” And so began the countdown to what turned out to be a fun and challenging event full of twists and turns, and we don’t mean only the drivingin-a-Porsche part.
STORY BY JERRY & PAM LASNIK EVENT PHOTOS BY JOHN ALFENITO The provided clues ran the full gamut: Religion (Ascension, Assumption, Big Sky), relaxation (Relax the Back, Zen Massage), geography (South Rim, Monte Carlo Dr., Morocco Lane), medicines (Yarrow Dr.), wildlife (Young Wolf Dr., Eagle Mountain), food (Casual Italian Dining, Coco’s, 31 Flavors), danger (watch downhill speed, watch for falling rock), history (Anastasia Ave., Clark Gable’s 1935 Duesenberg) and
the odd (Handiman Liquor and “A Gal Deboned,” Chick-fil-A). Possibly the most popular was the clue, “Like Porsches or newlyweds,” the answer being a roadside company named “Peak Performance.” As expected, after a bit more than two hours, the beautiful Porsches began arriving at Creekside, a pretty park in Thousand Oaks. The rallyists spent some time joking and laughing about >>>>>>
With the help of AAA, where we got maps to cut up and paste together, and Google Maps to make sure there were no deadends to get stuck in, we charted out a potential course. Then we took the drive and feverishly wrote down possible clues. The rest is Porsche History. We didn’t want to make the rally too difficult or frustrating, so we decided that all the answers to the clues had to start with either a number or a letter between A and Z. (Okay, Jerry’s students don’t always find humor in this either.)
Gimmick Rallymasters Jerry & Pam Lasnik JUNE 2014 AUSPUFF DER
The participants met, bright and early, at Rusnak Porsche Westlake Village, who treated them to a yummy breakfast from Corner Bakery. By 9 am, after some simple instructions (like “This is not a race!”), the drivers were handed their itineraries with clues, and off they went, all 44 Porsches.
11
THE GIMMICK RALLY the challenging run they had just finished, all hoping to win one of the three prizes to be awarded to the top scoring teams. Then everyone sat down to have a delicious BBQ lunch cooked by Q-time BBQ Grill & Catering. People walking by and smelling the tri-tip and chicken were not allowed to stay -- not that they didn’t try. Joining the club members this time were folks from as far away as the Inland Empire and San Diego. We guess they wanted to see how much fun we in the Santa Barbara group have on our events, and we showed them! There were a few minor glitches, though. The pink flying pig on a pole in rural Box Canyon was painted lavender last week. No one told us! The clue “A good place to find trees” was supposed to be the tract called “The Woodlands.” Right, but it happened to be on the corner of Avenida de los Arboles. Point taken. Then there was the Farmer’s Market happening right on our route. It was there that many of our dear Porsche people suffered nasty remarks and even finger gestures from impatient roadragers who thought Porsches should never go 5 mph. They even called them “old ladies.” It is easy to recognize jealousy when you see it.
101 With a very impressive score of 101 out of a possible 111, first place honors went to Mike & Laura Whittington.
Coming in second, Jack Rabell and Dick Rafter from the San Diego Region, both of whom are rally champions. The Gimmick Rally was something new for them.
We were quite impressed with the multitude of high scores on the Gimmick Rally. It seemed apparent that fun was had by all. The weather was great, the food was super and the camaraderie was awesome. Just another fine day in a Porsche. =

he second presentation of “Saturday Night at the Movies” for SBR members was held on the evening of May 10, 2014. The first movie night was 12 months earlier when we viewed the video of the Cannonball Race across America, which took place in just over 32 hours. The gathering of over 100 region members was treated to lectures by two very interesting individuals who have participated (in different years) in the Peking-To-Paris Rally.
Miglia, La Carrera Panamericana, California Miglia, Tour Espania and lastly, in the Peking-To-Paris.
The guests of honor were Stanley Gold, philanthropist, lawyer, entrepreneur, adventurer and friend of PCA/SBR who participated in the 2013 Peking-to-Paris Rally in a 1965 Porsche 911; and William (Bill) Erickson, also a friend of SBR and a Porschephile and superb mechanic who participated in the
Stanley’s biggest concern of all on this rally was the condition of the car. It was, after all, 50 years old! His plan was to take extra good care of the car -- no horsing around, realizing that you can’t win this race on the first day out, but hoping that 33 days later, he would come out just fine.
In the latter, an 8,000 mile odyssey (which is about 12,000 kilometers), the majority of which is off-road, especially the early part through Mongolia, Stanley drove a 1965 Porsche 911. Since most people know that he is a Porsche man, he thought it only appropriate that he try to do this rally in a Porsche.

Stanley has collected Porsches since 1990, focusing on 356 models. These include 904, 910 RS, ’52 steel-bodied American Roadster, Beutler Porsche, 356 Carrera 2 Cab, 356 Carrera 2 Coupe, and a 1955 Continental Coupe. He started racing and rallying about 15 years ago, and during that time has raced at Le Mans, Daytona Beach, Sebring, Nurburgring, Laguna Seca, Goodwood, Monaco and other venues. As for rallies, he has participated in the Tour Auto (France), Tour of Britain, Mille
As one can imagine, many memories and experiences are formed in an event like this rally. Stanley tries to remember only the good or pleasant things. The difficult moments fade quickly and are replaced by uplifting thoughts. He has to make himself remember the dust, wind, and more dust of Mongolia. Mechanical breakdowns in the middle of nowhere, absence of maps, and a sense of isolation and apprehension of the unknown were negative moments. But the sleepless nights in the back of a 4X4 are replaced by the delightful night spent in a yurt. Instead of remembering hours of driving through boring wheat fields, he remembers the green valleys and mountains of Siberia or the spectacular mountain passes of Switzerland or Austria. say that he enjoyed the trip is an understatement; he loved the adventure! He overcame hardship, unexpected problems and physical discomfort and now focuses solely on the highlights. The love of cars (Porsches in particular) has afforded Stanley the opportunity to participate in many different activities over the last 20+ years, including concours, tours, track racing and rallies. But according to him, the real pleasure in participating in these events was meeting new and interesting people, many of whom have become good friends. As much as he enjoyed the countries he traveled through, he continued to be reminded of how lucky he was to be born and grow up in America. That particular thought came to him touring Kiev, now very much in the news every day, from where his grandfather, Samuel Gold, emigrated to the US around 1900. That was a piece of good fortune, and Stanley will always be appreciative of that lucky break. Stanley commented that surely, there are other nations and cultures that have lots to offer, but he is sure that there is no other place like America that offers so many opportunities to so many of its citizens. That is his good fortune, and one he does not take lightly. All in attendance shared the sentiment. Bill Erickson participated in the 2007 P2P rally. It was the 100-year anniversary of the event. He drove a 1925 Buick pick-

up roadster. (Buick never made a pick-up; it was a four-door Phaeton that a farmer converted to meet his needs!) Bill finished the rally and was awarded a Bronze Medal. Along the route, he visited the Great Wall, The Hanging Monastery, Red Square and The Hermitage Museum. Not all was fun, as along the way, he suffered a rear suspension failure, a broken frame and numerous problems with wheels and tires. Bill has participated in other international rallies, including the Mille Miglia 2000 and the La Carrera Panamericana in 2003. Today, he conducts an automobile repair facility at his ranch in Oak View. He has been servicing Porsches since 1976 and opened his own facility in 1981. Among his many Porsche memories is his drive of the first 500 miles in one of the very first (if not the first) 930 Carrera Turbo in 1975. He effected the sale of the first 928 in California and, in 1983, purchased a used 1982 930 at the Zuffenhausen plant in Germany. Currently, he “supports” a retired 1958 Porsche Speedster that was at one time raced by the “General Kilpatrick” until the General passed away. Bill is very active in the annual Ventura Car Show, held each spring. As stated earlier, the presentations captured our imagination and allowed us to share in the rally experience. Thanks to Stanley and Bill for creating yet another fabulous SBR memory. =

THE R.U.F. REPORT
A Colorful Visit To Descanso Gardens
O
ne of the pleasures of living in Southern California, besides the beautiful weather, is the plethora of year-round venues to visit that afford interesting history in lovely surroundings. Sixteen R.U.F. members shared that experience when we visited Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge on April 17, 2014. We were led on a walking tour by our guide, Joe Sinclair, who has been volunteering at the gardens for 35 years and who had a store of interesting anecdotes to share with us. The weather was very mild and sunny as we traversed through the 60,000-plus camellias (most in bloom), azaleas, and myriad flower gardens. Among other special floriculture, we saw the large lilac garden filled with specially bred plants for the Southern California climate. We learned about the long history of this location, dating back 10,000 years when Native Americans lived on the land as hunters and gatherers through the Spanish land grant of 36,000 acres to Corporal Jose Maria Verdugo in 1784. The modern history of the property began in 1937 when it was purchased by E. Manchester Boddy, who in 1938 named the estate “Rancho del Descanso” and proceeded to develop the wonderful array of flora that exists today. Mr. Boddy built a 22-room mansion in the Hollywood Regency style for his personal residence, which our group was privileged to tour. With its grandscale rooms and large bay windows, it was evocative of an earlier, affluent lifestyle. The beautiful setting of the house makes it a very popular wedding venue today. Mr. Boddy had many horticultural interests. In addition to the vast camellia collection, there is a beautiful rose garden and hundreds of trees from all over the world. The ranch was sold to the County of Los Angeles by the Boddys in the 1950s. Although Mr. Boddy was unsuccessful in opening his ranch for public tours (it was opposed by neighbors surrounding the property), the sale eventually led to a public private partnership between Los Angeles County and the Descanso Gardens Guild, which eventually opened this treasure to the public. Following our very pleasant interlude in the Gardens, we traveled a short distance to Green Street restaurant in Pasadena for a delicious lunch and the opportunity to visit with friends. = JUNE 2014 AUSPUFF DER

THE TECH REPORT
Porsche’s Automatic Start/Stop System BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor
T
hose of us fortunate enough to have driven a late-model Porsche may have noticed a peculiar trait: the engine automatically switches off when the vehicle is stopped! This is by design, and is yet another fuel-saving measure necessary for Porsche to exceed the latest U.S. and European Union fuel economy standards. Much of the impetus of Porsche’s auto start/ stop system is due to differences in U.S. and EU government fuel economy test procedures. The EU test cycle includes more idling time than the current U.S. EPA test, and the time spent at idle weighs more heavily on fuel consumption and CO2 output figures compared to the U.S. MPG test. Shutting off the engine while stopped in traffic will certainly reduce the amount of fuel consumed. With an auto start/stop system, Porsche claims that fuel economy is improved by up to 10% in the EU’s urban test cycle, and 5% in the “extraurban” cycle that consists of a mixture of highway and city driving. Whether the auto start/stop system translates into real-world fuel economy gains is entirely dependent upon how the vehicle is driven.
AGM batteries are spill-proof and tend to be more durable than wet cell batteries, and are more suited to frequent deep discharging cycles from the heavy loads imparted by modern vehicle electrical systems. They do require care when charging, so the modern Porsches thus equipped (all Panameras, 2011-up Cayenne and 2012-up 911 and Boxster/ Cayman models) have a special computer-
Tiptronic-equipped vehicles, the engine will automatically switch off when the car is stopped with the brake pedal depressed. The system warning light in the instrument cluster will be illuminated while the engine is switched off. If the battery has enough capacity, any electrical accessories like the radio, climate control, and lights will remain activated. As long as the brake pedal remains depressed or the shift selector is in “P,” the engine will remain off. Once the brake pedal is released, the engine will automatically restart.
If you do not like your car dictating when its engine runs, you can always switch the system off!

DER
At the heart of the auto start/stop system is a special absorbed glass mat (AGM) battery. This type of battery uses completely sealed cells that contain a sponge-like fiberglass material to absorb the battery electrolyte. A traditional automotive battery uses “flooded” cells that are surrounded by the electrolyte when filled. AUSPUFF JUNE 2014
controlled charging system to ensure optimum AGM battery charge. These charging systems will usually only activate the alternator during periods of coasting or light engine load as a further fuel-saving measure, since the alternator does create a slight drag on the engine while charging. When the auto start-stop system is activated, it will not function until the engine reaches full operating temperature, which occurs quickly after cold start in modern Porsches due to their efficient thermal management systems. In PDK or
Increasingly rare manual transmissionequipped Porsches will turn the engine off when the vehicle comes to a stop and the transmission is shifted into neutral (a sensor in the transmission housing is used) and the clutch pedal is released. Once the clutch pedal is depressed, the engine will restart.
Frequent engine stopping and starting can rapidly drain the battery, which is much of the reason for using the robust AGM battery. A special heavy-duty starter motor is also used to cope with constant activation. A DC to DC converter supplies a steady voltage supply to the vehicle electrical system, as battery voltage dips while the engine is restarted. This prevents possible damage to voltage-sensitive electronic control units. An “intelligent” battery sensor is built into the negative battery cable to monitor the battery’s state of charge. The vehicle’s electrical system control
unit constantly monitors battery voltage and electrical load. If the voltage drops below a predetermined level, the auto start/stop system is deactivated until the battery is recharged to an acceptable level. The sophisticated charging system will increase the alternator’s output and rate of charge to achieve this. To prevent damage to the battery sensor, the negative cable of a battery charger or jumper cable should never be connected directly to the negative battery terminal. Instead, a body ground should be used as outlined in the owner’s manual and on the warning sticker in the battery compartment. The auto start/stop system will also be disabled if the air conditioning needs to be activated to cool the cockpit to the desired temperature, or if the heating system needs a higher coolant temperature to maintain cabin temperature or defrost level. If the engine temperature is too hot, the engine will restart to circulate coolant in an attempt to cool the engine. Also, if there are any vehicle electrical system faults present, the auto start/stop system will deactivate. If the system is unable to activate for any of the above reasons, the system warning
indicator in the instrument cluster will illuminate in amber. The long-term reliability of the auto start/stop system is unknown. The system is automatically deactivated if any electrical system faults are detected, so the chances of a system failure that would result in an inability to start the engine are remote. The system is hard on the battery and starter, and only time will tell if they are durable enough for frequent urban use. Many European-market vehicles from other automakers have used such a system for years. Because most automakers source items like starters and batteries from the same pool of suppliers, the heavy duty items used in Porsches should be very durable. If you do not like your car dictating when its engine runs, you can always switch the system off! In the US market, it is possible to manually deactivate the auto start/stop system. Unlike similar systems from other automakers, Porsche’s system remembers the driver’s desired setting so it does not have to be activated or deactivated every time the engine is initially started by the driver. =

Celebrate The 4th of July The Old-Fashioned Way
With A Parade!
…not by simply watching it from the sidelines but by being a part of it! Our club will slowly cruise down Santa Barbara’s State Street past the large crowd lining the boulevard with our Porsches decorated in 4th of July red, white, and blue finery. (A large part of the fun and camaraderie of this day is actually decorating our cars at the staging area alongside our fellow PCA/SBR members.) Two years ago, the Porsche Club was invited to take part in Santa Barbara’s 50th Annual 4th of July parade. We had such a good time that we decided to participate again last year. The Porsches were so popular that parade officials moved our position from the back of the 2012 parade to the front of the 2013 parade!
Porsche Club members who participated agreed that they had the time of their lives. We waved to and interacted with kids of ALL ages dressed in their finest 4th of July costumes. There’s something about a pack of colorful Porsches that drives the crowd wild, and the cheers drowned out the roar of our engines. Cost for this day of fun is practically free – only a $5.00 per person activity fee. Please send your checks, made out to PCA/SBR, to our parade coordinator, Nadine Tracy, at the address below. As the parade officials do not decide staging locations until we get closer to the 4th of July, all of you who sign up will receive additional information as soon as it’s transmitted to Nadine. You can plan on meeting mid-morning to line up alongside the parade route. Details of other Santa Barbara 4th of July celebratory events and activities following the parade will be given to you by Nadine as soon as they are made public.

The students will become more observant of the traffic situation they find themselves in. They’ll learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. As the students master the application of physics to drive their cars, they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves.

THE LAST WORD
All In The Family
Keen observers may have noticed that Madam President Doreen Pankow is driving a (new-to-her) familiar-looking, Midnight Blue1995 993 C2 these days. Also, Gary & Phyllis Weaver are cruisin’ a (new-to-them) 2005 Turbo Cabriolet. What’s going on here? Simple, really. Gary found the Cab (with the help of Dave Mosesson) in Arizona. A quick plane ride over, and the deal was done. When Doreen heard that Gary was selling his beautiful 993, she jumped, but she had to sell her 1990 964 first. As you can read in her column this month (page 4), that was easy. So, Doreen acquired Weavers’ 993. Just another reason being in SBR is great!
