n this month’s Der Auspuff, you will find SBR’s Official Ballot for the 2015 Election of Officers. I want to encourage you to vote. There are two ballots on the form, one for the primary member and one for the affiliate member. In Part I, only one candidate is listed for each office, but you may write in another candidate if you prefer. In Part II, write in your choices for the Man and Woman of the Year. In Part III, have all parties voting sign their name, and then mail in the pre-addressed ballot or turn it in at a November breakfast meeting. The ballots are due December 8th. Only SBR’s secretary will see the ballots and count the votes, so your selections will be kept in confidence. The results will be announced at our annual membership meeting at the Holiday Brunch on Sunday, December 14th. I’d like to continue my discussion about Board member contributions to our club that I started in October. Nicolas Liakas, Past President, has served on the Board for over nine years in various leadership positions and also on the editorial team for at least three years. He served as our President for three years and as Past President for four years. Nick started up R.U.F (Retired & Unemployed Folks) in 2006 and served as its chair through 2011. Besides taking on the Public Relations role for several years, Nick chaired the planning committee for SBR’s 50th Anniversary team, our club’s largest event ever! He is renowned for all the fun events he’s organized for the club, including long weekend events over Memorial and Labor Day weekends and dozens of same-day events. Thank you, Nick, for taking on all these challenges and for your strong leadership throughout the years. Ted Lighthizer is serving his fifth year on the Board, three years as Activities Chair and the past two years as the Advertising Director for Der Auspuff. He also served as the Autocross Chair. Ted has developed good relationships with our 33 advertisers, ten of which he brought in as new clients this year. He worked with Randy Fishwick to develop the Advertisers section on our

website that provides links to each advertiser’s business website. Ted would say his biggest contribution was starting up the Street Survival School community service program in 2012. As Chief Instructor, he has built up a great team of coaches and SBR volunteers that has allowed our club to put on three successful driving schools for teens and young adults. Ted provides a lot of behind-the-scenes support to our club, such as organizing volunteers to put up canopies at the Chili Cook-off each year, coordinating the traffic control team for Concours events and, this year, building the ramps used at the Four Seasons Concours that allowed us to get the cars safely over the curb onto the lawn. Thank you, Ted, for all your contributions and for taking on so many challenging assignments. Barry Weinstein is serving his fourth year as our Activities Chair. Valerie & Barry served together as co-chairs in 2006 and 2007. Barry is the sole chairperson in 2013 and 2014, though I know that Valerie still helps out. The Activities Chair is one of the most visible positions in our club since they organize many of the club events themselves and are there to support and assist other club members who host an event. Barry also announces upcoming events at all our breakfast meetings and makes sure waivers get signed at every event along with coordinating a hundred other details. I really enjoy Barry’s entertaining style of writing for the event fliers and the subsequent event stories. Thank you, Barry, for the countless hours you spend on behalf of the club and for making our events so fun. Sue Kinsling is serving her third year as our Membership Chair. Most of you have talked to Sue at our monthly breakfast meetings in Camarillo and Santa Barbara. Sue always has a smiling face and works hard to make new members feel welcome. She assists people to join PCA, helps all our members update their address and email information as needed and tracks a lot of membership data for the club. Sue and her husband Randy also open up their home to members for club events on a regular basis. We all enjoyed the Hawaiian Luau last year and the recent Halloween party at their lovely home. Thank you, Sue, for your warm and friendly style of communication and for all the assistance you provide to our members. Please be sure to thank these Board members for all that they do.

SIDEWAYS

SANTA BARBARA REGION’S GRAPE HARVEST TOUR 2014 SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2014 The 2014 edition of the annual Grape Harvest Tour has us driving and tasting our way through the Santa Barbara Wine Country on the same path forged by Miles (Paul Giamatti) and Jack (Thomas Haden Church) on their wine tasting road trip salute to Jack’s final days as a bachelor in the 2004 film SIDEWAYS. Tour highlights include: THE ALISAL RANCH RIVER GRILL for a luxurious buffet brunch featuring a number of hot and cold choices. We’ll then drive by the KALYRA WINERY -- where, while tasting wine, Miles and Jack meet Stephanie, a flirtatious wine pourer who becomes the object of Jack’s affection. We’ll also pass the HITCHING POST II -- Miles and Jack share a bottle of Highliner at the bar. While having dinner, they talk to Maya, who waits tables there. Later, Miles returns alone. We will stop at the FESS PARKER WINERY -- At “Frass Canyon’s” large wine tasting event, Miles phones his agent and finds out his book will not be published. After the pourer refuses to serve him a full glass, Miles guzzles the spit bucket. Then on to the ANDREW MURRAY/CURTIS VINEYARDS – Miles and Jack drive along the outskirts of the vineyard. And finally, the FIRESTONE WINERY -- Miles, Jack, Maya, and Stephanie sneak out of a wine lecture to share a romantic walk through the Barrel Room.

uu

Accompanying us on our “Sideways” Tour will be VIRGINIA MADSEN, star of the original motion picture! (Subject to her availability.)

THE R.U.F. REPORT

A Tempting Visit To The Porsche Exclusive Personal Design Studio In Beverly Hills STORY BY HOWARD RUBENSTEIN PHOTOS BY DICK LANGE

Although it is referred to as a design studio, they do not actually design new cars. Porsche Exclusive is the ultimate in customization and personalization, offering a wide range of styling options. The design consultant attempts to focus on the most important wishes and requirements of the client. They are able to help create a truly special vehicle ranging from the personalized door-sill to a more sophisticated Porsche and everything in between. Basically, the consultant is able to design a car that is tailor-made to the way the client envisions it. They have available on hand most every color, accessory and leather sample for the client to view, including an Authentic Leather interior option for the 918 Spyder that costs $26,000. Porsche’s “Special Wish Program” was initially founded in 1978, becoming Porsche Exclusive in 1986. The first Porsche Exclusive studio opened in 1976 in Germany. The Beverly Hills Design Studio opened in the summer of 2011, and the fact that it is located in Los Angeles shows the importance of the Southern California market to Porsche. Any prospective Porsche buyer of any model may

make an appointment with Matthew and have their Porsche made-to-order. Matthew’s Porsche Exclusive clients typically become aware of his services through various outlets including dealers, advertising and word of mouth. There are quite a number of advantages to working with a Porsche Exclusive Consultant at the studio, such as having an expert on hand with extensive technical and design knowledge in addition to design configuration knowledge. They have ultimately seen so many different configurations that they are able to distinguish between what will look good and what may not. In other words, they have a wealth of experience. As an example of the finished product, Matthew showed us a new Viper Green 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, which was stunning. Not only did it have painted wheels, but the spoiler and side mirrors were also painted the same color. There was deviated stitching on the seats and dashboard, the interior trim was painted to match the exterior color, the seats had deviated color inlays, and the vents were leather to match the seat inlays, yellow seat belts and instrument dials, etc., etc. Truly a custom, one-of-a-kind Porsche. Our visit was topped off with lunch at the world famous Nate’n Al Delicatessen, which was a short walk from the Porsche Design Studio. Although everyone enjoyed the experience, no one seemed ready to take advantage of the Porsche Exclusive service prior to leaving – I have a feeling that will change in the very near future. = NOVEMBER 2014 AUSPUFF DER

n September, the “Retired & Unemployed Folks” (R.U.F.) had an opportunity to visit the Porsche Exclusive Personal Design Studio. Nineteen members made the journey to Beverly Hills and met with Matthew Henry, the West Coast Personal Design Specialist, who gave a comprehensive overview of his operation. He is one of only two Porsche Exclusive Consultants in the USA, with the other being Melissa Witek located at Porsche’s Headquarters in Atlanta.

Thanks are in order to our sponsors and to our many volunteers. Ted Lighthizer headed up the parking team, and they did fantastic work. The team at the entry gate included Dave Mosesson, Larry Mosesson, Joe Niederst and Danny Thornburg. On the Pagoda Lawn were Jim Brown, Wayne Bartlett, Pat Cable, Frank Donahue, Dee Dorazio, Randy Fishwick and Dan Long. Darryl Haus and Jeff Koskie handled Display cars. The coordinated registration team consisted of Beverly Brovsky, Sue Kinsling and David & Susan Stone. Starting at 6:00 a.m., they managed to have all 38 judged cars and 20 display cars checked in and set by 9:00 a.m. The judged car participants immediately broke out Q-tips and microfiber towels for a last-minute cleaning and deAUSPUFF NOVEMBER 2014

The judges were led by Head Judge Dick Douglass. The group included Alfred Abken, Kenny Brundrett, Bill Clevenger, Michael Dolphin, Carolyn Ewbank, Rob Green, Lem Libunao, Ted Lighthizer, Judith & Pete Lech, Phil Mallard, Brett Mohr, Jack Moliner, Joe & Karen Nedza, Steve Vinings, Robert Watt, Jeff Waxman and Dave & Linda Yerzley. Timers were Houri Greko, Mike Hodson, Tom Marshall and Lisa Watt. Scoring was done by Jane Douglass and Floyd Mohr. A brief meeting for the judging teams was held at 9:30 a.m. Several of the judges had entered their cars in the competition and quickly returned to finish preparing their cars before the call for “light dusting only” and the beginning of judging. Participants from Santa Barbara Region, Los Angeles Region, Grand Prix Region and Orange Coast Re-

gion waited with bated breath for their cars to be judged while admiring the beautiful trophies, including the much-coveted People’s Choice award. Everyone was delighted to hear Jim Brown announce that lunch was ready. So off we went to the waterfall, another breathtaking location, for a delicious buffet lunch. After lunch, the final cars were judged, and the People’s Choice ballots were cast, giving everyone another chance to admire the cars (everything from a 1956 Speedster to a 2014 Cayman), meet new people, and partake of the Goodie Stores’ sales. Santa Barbara Region President Doreen Pankow took the microphone to thank our event sponsor, Rusnak Westlake Porsche for its ongoing support of our club. She also acknowledged Rusnak’s bringing out the Porsche Boutique and their beautiful disiplay of new Porsches. In addition to recognizing all the concours

Concours Co-Chair Kenny Brundrett kicked off the awards presentation with the announcement of the Class Winners and their scores, while Tara Brundrett had the joy of presenting the awards to each winner. There were ties for three Divisions, which shows how close the competition really was. With 15 votes, the People’s Choice winners were firsttime participants Norm & Jan Harris with their 1965 Signal Red 356 C. At the close of the event, members of the parking team safely guided everyone off the lawn to enjoy the rest of the day. Once again, I’d like to thank our sponsors and all the volunteers. THE TECH REPORT

Long-Term Car Storage

W

ith autumn already upon us and winter approaching here in Santa Barbara, long term car storage seems to be an appropriate subject for this month’s tech column. Since Porsches are often second or third cars for most people, I am often asked questions about what preparations should be made for a car that is parked in the garage more often than it is driven. In this article I will outline some simple steps to help ensure that your Porsche will be ready to go the next time it rolls out into the sun after a long hibernation.

Battery

As discussed in several previous articles, a modern, digital trickle charger is a wise investment. Keeping your Porsche’s battery fully charged, but not overcharged, will eliminate the hassle and hazards of jump starting when the time comes to fire it up. It is also very hard on the generator or alternator to frequently charge up a flat battery.

Fluids & Fuel System

Be sure to change the engine oil and brake fluid before storing any car. Brake fluid absorbs moisture by nature and should be changed every two years regardless of whether the vehicle is driven or not. Engine oil does not absorb water, but moisture builds up in the engine crankcase anyway, so the oil should be changed annually. A major area of concern during longterm storage is the fuel system, especially with older Porsches. Today’s California gasoline formulation contains up to 10% ethanol. Geopolitical implications aside, the problem with this is that ethanol absorbs any water that may be present in underground fuel storage tanks at gas stations or in a vehicle’s fuel tank. When a car with a tankful of ethanol fuel sits, phase separation occurs, and the layer of gasoline sits on top of a layer that is mostly made of water. Older fuel systems like carburetors and mechanical or CIS fuel

injectors are not very tolerant of water in the fuel system as it can develop rust inside components and generally wreak havoc. If you are storing an older Porsche, fill it up with fresh gasoline and add a fuel system stabilizer to the tank. This not only helps to keep the gasoline from going bad, but the newest Fuel stabilizer is formulations cheap insurance. are designed to fight the phase separation that occurs in modern gasoline with ethanol. If gasoline in a stored Porsche is more than a few years old, it should be professionally drained and disposed of in an environmentally compliant fashion, and the fuel system should be cleaned out and renewed if necessary. Besides causing poor engine running, excessively old gasoline can form varnish deposits that are harmful to fuel systems.

Starting the Engine

One of the most common statements I hear from customers who are storing their cars is, “I start it up once a week.” If you are not planning on driving the car and properly warming up the fluids, try not to start the engine! More engine wear occurs during cold startup than at any other time

If you are planning on storing your Porsche for several years without driving it, it would be best to change the engine oil before the car goes into storage. If the car cannot be driven, it would be wise to periodically turn the engine over by hand to ensure that it does not seize. It must be said that an engine will only seize after sitting for many years while stored outdoors and without spark plugs or while partially disassembled. If a car is stored inside in a dry place and the engine is turned over every once in a while, it should not seize.

Tires

If a car will sit stationary for several months or more, it is best to over-inflate the tires to prevent flat-spotting. Most tires will lose 1-2 PSI of air a month through the sealing surfaces and valve stem, so the amount of over-inflation should be commensurate with the length of time that that the car will be stationary. due to the oil being cold and thick and the wear surfaces being relatively dry. It can take several seconds for cold oil to reach vital engine bearings and other components after startup. Repeatedly cold-starting an engine and letting it idle for a few minutes and then shutting it off is literally subtracting miles from the life of your engine, even though most owners do this to “keep it lubricated.” The only way to properly warm up an engine is to drive the car; with the large volume of oil that most Porsche engines hold, it will never warm up properly while idling or revving in neutral.

do notice signs of rodent presence in any vehicle, it is best to thoroughly vacuum out all affected areas, as rodents tend to return to places where they can smell any sign of their presence.

Indoor and outdoor car covers are not interchangeable. Each has its own design and purpose. Any car cover manufacturer can advise you on a proper cover for your purpose. to check the tire pressures again before the car is driven. There are also special tire cradles available that are designed to help the tires keep their shape while the car is parked on them.

Body

If a car is being stored outside, it is a good idea to keep it covered to prevent sun and weather damage. However, the type of car cover to be used is important, as keeping a car covered outside longterm can sometimes be more damaging to a car’s finish than no cover at all. There are high-end car covers available that are weatherproof but also breathable to prevent moisture from being trapped underneath the cover. Periodically removing the cover and letting it and the car “air out” is also a good idea. If your Porsche is fortunate enough to be stored inside, a quality lightweight dust cover should be sufficient. Be sure that the

garage is clean and dry, with no water leaks or other moisture sources. There are even climate controlled “car bubbles” available for the most fastidious enthusiasts.

In closing, my best advice for any Porsche owner is to regularly drive your car! While it may seem that you are pampering your Porsche by keeping it covered in the garage most of the time, they are happiest when they are driven normally. The engine parts and seals stay lubricated, and the fuel systems remain clean and clear. If you do need to store your German sports car for a long period, following the above guidelines will ensure that it fires up eagerly and is ready to hit the road when it comes out of storage. =

Another concern in this area is rodent damage. Parked cars make cozy homes for all sorts of vermin, and the damage that they are capable of causing can be extensive. A number of local Porsche owners are lucky enough to live on properties in the hills and countryside that happen to also be home to rodents, and it can be difficult to completely repel them from getting into homes and vehicles. As my shop frequently deals with rodent-damaged cars, I have heard of all sorts of varmint repellants, from mousetraps to cats, to dog hair and dryer sheets, and even paprika and cayenne pepper! Since I cannot personally vouch for any of these methods, I would recommend a consultation with a pest control professional to determine the best method for keeping rodents at bay. If you

18TH ANNUAL PCA/SBR

CHILI COOK-OFF STORY BY BARRY WEINSTEIN, PHOTOS BY DICK LANGE

F

or the first time in 18 years, our annual Chili Cook-off was held in September, 60 days later in the year than in the past. This event had always been earmarked for the month of July. In each of those past years, adding the fieriness of the chili to the sweltering July temperatures always rewarded us with a really hot affair! This year, the late September cooling breezes contributed to our enjoying one of the most comfortable Chili Cook-offs (temperature-wise) in memory. As they say, “it takes a village” to put on an affair this large. Fortunately, our club’s total membership is larger than many villages. In fact, fully 30% of the participants supported this year’s cook-off by setting up the tables, chairs, & tents, serving the food, directing parking, counting ballots, and cleaning up. Fifteen of our members brought pots of chili to be judged in the cook-off. The rest brought appetizers, salads, breads, desserts, etc., to share. Once again, the Middlebrooks’ auto court and driveway looked like a Porsche dealership with 40+ gorgeous cars on display. This year we had the largest group of sign-ups ever. 15 pots of chili were sampled and scored by all who attended. Three PC-SBR members were declared the winners. Thirdplace winner was Becky Lundberg. Becky won first place last year. Coming in second was our host, Jim Middlebrook. Last year he came in second and, in previous years, was our first-place winner. The grand prize winner was Terri Koskie. Interestingly, in the eight years that the Middlebrooks have been hosting this event, the three winners mentioned above have come in first, second or third a total of 11 times. Terri has come in first three times and second place twice. Jim has won first place twice and came in second twice. Becky won last year and came in third this year. Those who once again did their utmost to make this, the 18th Annual Chili Cook- off another overwhelming success included our hosts, Terry and Jim Middlebrook, and the Chief “Chili Wrangler,” Phyllis Weaver, who organized the ladies who served the 15 pots of chili to our group. In addition, the following list is to recognize the rest of the large group of volunteers who worked so hard to make this one of the most successful Chili Cook-offs of the last two decades. They include: Gary Weaver, Mike Jacobs, Jessica Sato, David and Luz Mosesson, Jeff and Terri Koskie, Claudia McCabe, Jeff and Rosalee Merrick, David and Susan Stone, Claus and Iris Eisenbach, Henry Valdez, Carolyn Ewbank , Ted Lighthizer, Dick Lange, and Howard Rubenstein. If I left anyone out, please forgive me. As I’ve said in the past, unfortunately, memory is one of the first things to go. =
