The President’s Column Doreen Pankow
Our Holiday Brunch on December 14th is a wonderful time to celebrate our friendships as well as to help those who are less fortunate. We will be collecting unwrapped toys for the Unity Shoppe in Santa Barbara at our Holiday Brunch on December 15th. Since this is also our Annual Meeting of the Membership, we will be installing the 2015 officers on the Board of Directors at this event. Don’t forget to submit your ballots by December 8th to SBR’s Secretary, Dick Lange, and vote for the 2015 officers. There are a few more Board members who I’d like to acknowledge this month. John & Jeanne McNair have been serving on the board for the past eight years: five years as Goodie Store managers, three years as R.U.F. Co-Chairs organizing monthly events, and John is serving his second year as our Vice President. In addition, they’ve organized the MLK weekend events to fun destinations since 2012. Thank you, John & Jeanne, for your incredible service and dedication to our club. James Oldham is serving his sixth year as our Archives Director. Most members are unaware of what this job entails, but if you look at the 50th Anniversary Journal that you received in the mail in June, you’ll see how well our history has been archived and preserved so that future members can enjoy learning about our past events. Thank you, James, for organizing and storing these records to maintain our club’s history. Steve Kaller is serving his fifth year as our Treasurer, and he also served as Vice President for one year. Steve keeps our financial books in order, oversees tax preparation and creates monthly financial reports for our board. Thank you, Steve, for your financial advice and oversight and the many hours you spend keeping the books.

James Edwards is serving his third year as our Insurance Chair. If you’ve organized a club event, you know that James obtains the insurance certificate for your outing and sends you the Post Event and Observers Reports that need to be completed. James works closely with National PCA to make sure they receive all the required reports after each event and also obtains answers to our insurance questions. Thank you, James, for keeping us in compliance with PCA’s insurance requirements and for providing instruction to those of us who put on events. AUSPUFF DECEMBER 2014
Richard Lange is serving his third year as our Secretary. He takes the Board Meeting minutes, which are published in Der Auspuff, and assists with club communication as needed. Dick has organized several club events which we’ve all enjoyed, and he and his wife, Linda, have also hosted the dessert stop for one of our progressive dinners. Thank you, Dick, for all that you do for our club. William Griswold is serving his third year as our Safety Chair. He makes sure that all of our events are conducted safely according to PCA’s safety requirements. William’s role is critical at our Autocross and Street Survival School events where participants are competing for best time on track and/or learning new driving skills. Thank you, William, for your safety instructions and helpful advice. Rick & Martie Theise are serving their first year as our Goodie Store Managers. They operate this store as a service to our members in purchasing clothing, badges, and other fun Porsche paraphernalia at very reasonable prices. Thank you, Rick & Martie, for all the time you spend purchasing, setting up and selling these items to our members. Kenny & Tara Brundrett are serving their first year as our Concours Co-Chairs. Those who attended this year’s event at the Four Seasons saw the results of their hard work in organizing such a complex event. They are very detail-oriented and ensure that we have enough judges to assess all the entrants’ cars; select and order trophies, lunch, and morning snacks; and recruit lots of volunteers. Thank you, Kenny & Tara, for putting on such a fantastic event this year! Pamuela Hodson is serving her first year as the Mademoiselle Society Chair. She organized a fun outing to the Circle Bar B Ranch, and this month, we’re going on a boat tour of the holiday lights in Channel Islands Harbor. Thank you, Pamuela, for getting the ladies back together. The Santa Barbara Region is renowned for the number of activities we put on and also for being a very friendly club. Thank you for being a member and for greeting and welcoming our new members at our various events. We are truly blessed to be a part of this active region. I also want to thank all the volunteers for your support and willingness to help out at our events these past two years. It’s been my pleasure to serve all of you. Ted and I wish all of you peace, happiness and good health in the coming year!

T
his has been a truly eventful year for the Santa Barbara Region. In January, we inaugurated our new Camarillo Breakfast location at Panera Bread & Johnny Rockets at the outlet mall. Although I’m sure many of us miss the unique “car show” feel of the lawn at the Way-Point Café, continuing on there was not an option. The new Camarillo Outlets location has been a big success with two choices for breakfast and unlimited parking.
It was also in June at the Porsche Parade in Monterey that SBR was named “Region of the Year” by PCA. Scores of us were there as President Doreen Pankow and 50th Anniversary Chairman Nicolas Liakas accepted the coveted Ferry Porsche trophy from Hans Peter Porsche and Manny Alban. It was an amazing evening of great excitement. July’s 50th Anniversary Celebration was a day to remember as well. A significant number of Porsches took a scenic drive through the back roads of Santa Barbara County, arriving at Fess Parker’s Resort in time for a sumptuous buffet with lots of special guests in attendance. It was the single largest event in the history of our region!
It was at our first Camarillo Breakfast of 2014 that we learned that SBR member Michael Hohls of Newbury Park had won the PCA Member Only Raffle. His prize was a 2014 50th Anniversary Carrera and $25,000 in cash! Also, MLK weekend saw SBR off for a fun visit to Carlsbad and the surrounding areas.
Also in July, SBR staged its third annual Street Survival School for Teens. And several members once again participated in Santa Barbara’s 4th of July Parade through downtown Santa Barbara. In September, we got our kicks on Route 66 as a large group headed off to travel “the mother road” for some sightseeing and adventure. Also in September, the 18th edition of our popular Chili Cook-Off was held.
In June, the region published an ambitious “50th Anniversary Journal,” documenting each of SBR’s five decades with photos and

And in November, we took a “Sideways” look at Southern California’s Wine Country (see page 15). 2014 was quite a year. Here’s to an even better 2015. In the dimly lit living room sat a psychic, who offered tarot card readings, palm readings and psychic readings with crystals. Some partook of her services, and others were not so brave, perhaps not really wanting to know what she would say. The many appetizing (with the exceptions noted) hors d’oeuvres were laid out on the large dining table with clever Halloween-related objects decorating every surface of the room. Some foods made you think twice before trying them, such as “bat guano hummus” and a plate full of “eyeballs.”

In the impressively decorated kitchen was a table laid out with several inviting-looking desserts that included cookies, a Halloween cake and even a
south-of-the-border hombre, The Joker and a stylized Batman along with Robin. Also in the mix were a cowgirl, a cowboy, Dracula and his vampire lady, a flashy pair of hippies, Darth Vader, a cheerleader, a judge, Vendetta and his mysterious hooded woman, and a Bavarian couple. Not all are listed here, but the costumes were so effective that it was sometimes difficult to determine just exactly who was occupying them. A contest of guess-how-many took place throughout the evening involving small candies in each of three containers -- candy corn in one, jelly beans in another and M&Ms in the third. Not surprisingly, the prizes were the containers of candy. Jacqueline Duran was the winner of the candy corn, Brian Rubino took home the jelly beans, and Larry Stoops had the closest guess for the M&Ms. Guests could vote for their favorite costumes in three categories: Scariest costume, funniest costume and best costume. After the votes were tallied, the winners

The Kinsling house – or shall we say “crypt” since both Sue & Randy were vampires that evening – was “spooktacularly” decked out for the occasion. The front yard had been transformed into a shadowy graveyard. Webs, very large spiders guarding their enormous egg sacs, understated lighting and flickering candles “welcomed” the arriving guests. Every room had been carefully prepared for the occasion, and it must have taken at least two weeks of creative effort to put it all together.

A skeleton was sitting at a table waiting for someone to request an experience with a Ouija board. No takers were seen, although the skeleton was silently posing for photos with many of the guests. Costumed people mingled, talked and laughed both inside and outside the house. The evening was pleasant and balmy, so the back patio was enjoyed by many guests who took in the view of lights from other houses. The colorful cast of characters included a pirate with his parrot, a1950s-garbed girl, a cow along with her white-coated veterinarian, two wizards from Harry Potter, a couple of versions of Catwoman, a ghastly three-headed creature accompanied by a

t was a special day for SBR members for many reasons. The group of 116 members in 61 Porsches embarked on a thrilling drive into the Santa Barbara wine country in gorgeous autumn weather. The objective for the day was to drive past and visit the locations made famous by the movie “Sideways” that was released exactly ten years ago. The region where the film is set continues to feel its impact. The independent movie about two middle-aged men drinking and misbehaving their way through Santa Barbara wine country opened in limited release in October 2004 and went on to become a surprise hit, grossing more than $71 million at the box office. It was also a boon to the winemaking industry in the Santa Ynez Valley and a bigger boost to tourism in the region. Until the movie’s release, the region lacked recognition in other parts of America. Many Americans thought that all the wine came from Sonoma and Napa and didn’t even know this area was a big wine producer. After the release, visitors to Santa Barbara are now on a mission to drink wine and see sites from “Sideways.” The scenes of Miles drinking an entire bottle of wine by himself made the Pinot Noir variety a national phenomenon. Conversely, Merlot took a big hit as its sales plummeted for years after the movie. Not many people knew the wine being cultivated and produced in Santa Barbara County was of such high quality, but “Sideways” changed that, too.
SIDEWAYS PHOTO GALLERY ON PAGES 16 & 17
Our particular adventure on November 15 began in the early morning at the Sears parking lot in downtown Santa Barbara. The “bunch” of Porsches was quite a sight! The procession, once it entered the northbound U.S. Hwy 101, created a fabulous experience, especially as we entered the tunnel just past the Gaviota curve. We exited at the Nojoqui Falls county park exit and continued past the falls onto Alisal Road to the Alisal Resort River Grill, where we enjoyed an exceptional brunch. We found our way to Refugio Road in Santa Ynez and drove past the Kalyra Winery, where while tasting wine, Miles and Jack met Stephanie, a flirtatious wine pourer who becomes the object of Jack’s affection. The facilities there were too small for our group to visit. (The sight of 60 Porsches making a U-turn on a narrow road in front of Kalyra was quite humorous!) We continued our tour by going past the Hitching Post restaurant on Hwy 246. This is where Miles and Jack shared a bottle of Highliner at the bar. While having dinner, they talked to Maya, who waited tables there. We drove past this landmark as it was not open during morning hours. We rejoined Hwy 101 northbound and traveled beyond Buellton to explore some hidden gems of back roads that meander through stillundeveloped topography. We watched for cattle taking advantage of shade under ancient oak trees and loved seeing equine beauties in the verdant meadows. Continued on page 16 DECEMBER 2014 AUSPUFF DER

Our next stop was on Foxen Canyon Road at the Fess Parker Winery. At “Frass Canyon’s” large wine-tasting event, Miles phoned his agent and found out his book would not be published. Our tasting experience was situated outside the tasting room, overlooking the manicured grounds of this most-famous winery in the region. Our group occupied entirely the patio seating areas that are found around the perimeter of the main building.

Further down on Foxen Canyon, we visited the Firestone Winery. Here, Miles, Jack, Maya and Stephanie snuck out of a wine lecture to share a romantic walk through the Barrel Room. Once again, a special patio area was reserved for us, and the tasting was enjoyed from a point in the gardens that overlooked the adjacent valley. The combination of the sights, sounds and tastes was – intoxicating.
AUSPUFF DECEMBER 2014
Also nearby on Foxen Canyon are the Andrew Murray Vineyards. At the time of the movie, there were two vineyards here, the aforementioned Murray and the Curtis Vineyards. The Curtis Vineyards, barrel and tasting rooms have been acquired by Andrew Murray. This was not an official stop for our group, but several of our members decided to pay a brief visit before heading for home. Everything about this SBR adventure was perfect. The weather, the roads, the participants – all combined to create yet another memory of fun times and good friends. None of this would have happened without the untiring efforts of Barry Weinstein, who administered and managed the entire event (and so many other SBR activities and projects for more than a decade), Greg Posner for route planning, and the photographic genius of Ray Jordan, Ron & Helen Tanabe and Kent Bodin. They deserve our thanks and gratitude. =

SBR To Tour The Missions of Santa Barbara County NEW EVENT
ake a journey back into California’s history and Spanish heritage by joining your fellow SBR members on February 21, 2015, as we explore the three Missions located in Santa Barbara County. The three, described below, are among the 21 California Missions that transformed life in the region, the impacts of which are still with us today. Self-guided tours will make the history come alive. Here is a brief description of each Mission we will visit. Mission La Purisima Concepcion is the favorite of historians who say that it retains the flavor of the mission era with its architecture and exhibits. It is located near Lompoc. Teachers love it, and it is one of the top-visited California missions for student trips. Maintaining the original design as the 11th mission, which was built in 1787, the current structure and grounds are a model of the original building and was rebuilt by original methods. Painted a vibrant color described as deep salmon, today’s mission is based on photos and drawings from the original mission which was destroyed through earthquakes and the hands of time. Mission Santa Ines was founded on September 17, 1804, by Father Estevan Tapis. It was named in honor of Saint Agnes, an early Christian martyr of the fourth century. (The Spanish word for Agnes is Ines.) The nearby town of Santa Ynez got its name from this same heritage. If you’re looking for an inspiring place to reflect, be sure to check out the Mission Garden of the Resurrection. The 19th to be constructed in the chain
of Missions is the favorite of many who enjoy the vistas of this mission’s hilltop grounds overlooking the Santa Ynez River Valley and the Santa Ynez and San Rafael mountain ranges. Devastated by the great earthquake of 1812, the mission was rebuilt and once included vast acreage with thousands of livestock and crops. Many consider Santa Barbara the Queen of the Missions. In its regal setting atop a hillside and framed to the backdrop of the Santa Ynez Mountains, you can see the twin tower structure from vistas in Santa Barbara and observe its beauty from a distance. The 10th of the California missions, the Santa Barbara Mission was founded by Franciscan Friar Fermin de Lasuen on the Feast of St. Barbara, December 4, 1786. The only mission with two bell towers is also unique for its stone facade patterned after an ancient Latin temple in pre-Christian Rome. The design is traced to a book brought to California by the Franciscans, a Spanish reprint of an architecture book originally published in 27 B.C. Several earthquakes have rocked the mission to its foundation. One major earthquake in 1812, only 24 years after she was built, caused major damage to Mission Santa Barbara. The church at Mission Santa Barbara was rebuilt with thicker walls and was completed in 1820. This church was damaged again in yet another earthquake in 1925 and was repaired.

THE TECH REPORT
BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor
culates to the water pump, and the process repeats.
ome longtime Porsche purists may lament the loss of the 911’s beloved air-cooled engine after the 1998 model year, but sometimes the laws of physics and the realities of the modern world cannot be ignored. A dedicated liquid cooling system is simply more effective than air alone at removing heat from an internal combustion engine (though both designs also rely on the engine oil for cooling).
Automotive cooling systems are pressurized, usually between 15-20 PSI. This helps the water pump maintain coolant flow but, more importantly, it raises the boiling point of the entire cooling system. Cooling system pressure is maintained by a special filler cap that screws into a coolant expansion tank on all Porsche models. This tank also functions as the coolant reservoir, and it allows for the normal expansion of coolant volume as its temperature rises.
S
Government-mandated exhaust and noise emission laws also conspired in the death of the air-cooled engine. In addition to reducing the mechanical clatter of the engine, the water jackets and cooling passages of water-cooled engines help the engine to warm up quickly after cold starts and retain heat after engine shutoff for reduced emissions. The cabin heating and defrost systems of water-cooled cars are also worlds better! Porsche introduced water cooling in the front-engine 924 and 928 models of the late 1970s. Both models use the engine timing belt to drive the engine water pump. Otherwise, these cooling systems are fairly conventional. The water pump has a bladed impeller to draw coolant into a fitted cavity in the engine block and pump it throughout the engine cooling passages.
944 water pump The flowing coolant absorbs some of the heat of combustion and carries it away from the engine and to the radiator, which is a water-to-air heat exchanger that is mounted at the front of the vehicle and exposed to airflow. The coolant then recir-

If engine coolant were allowed to flow freely to the radiator at all times, the engine would take too long to get up to operating temperature after cold startup. This results in increased exhaust emissions and fuel consumption. A thermostat element is installed to provide temperature control of the cooling system. Most water-cooled Porsches use a traditional-style thermostat, which consists of a spring-loaded block-off plate that is controlled by a temperature-sensitive wax element. When the engine is cold, the thermostat blocks coolant flow to the radiator. When the engine coolant reaches a specified temperature, the wax element expands and opens slowly and gradually to allow coolant flow to the radiator; it does not fully open until full operating temperature is reached. Porsche ushered in a new era of midand rear-engine, water-cooled sports cars with the introduction of the Boxster, and
this configuration does present some challenges. The radiators need to be mounted in the front for optimal cooling flow, but the engine is in the rear of the car. This requires a large volume of coolant, which flows through long coolant pipes that run the length of the car. The system has proven to be very effective, however. Porsche’s water cooling systems do need periodic maintenance, as do most other systems on the car. The coolant level and condition should be checked regularly. In most climates, a ratio of 50% coolant and 50% distilled water should be maintained. The coolant provides the “antifreeze” properties that many are aware of; it also lubricates the water pump bearings and contains additives to prevent corrosion of engine components. The earlier front-engine Porsches require a different type of coolant than the late-model Porsches (beginning with the Boxster, up to and including the newest models). The 924/944/968/928 models should use a coolant that is phosphate-free and safe for the type of aluminum used in German engines of the period. (My shop uses factory BMW or Mercedes coolant.) The later Porsches use a specific Porscheonly coolant, and this should be the only coolant that is ever allowed in these cooling systems! The early Porsche coolant was a brilliant, “radioactive” green-yellow color but was superseded 5-6 years ago for a pink-colored version. Both types are interchangeable and mixable, but only the pink type is now available. This is a very long-lasting coolant, and Porsche states it is a lifetime coolant that never needs to be changed. However, all fluids have a shelf life, as additives break down and pH balance changes with age and use. It is prudent to change coolant every 5-6 years, as it will help to reduce corrosion of cooling system parts. Coolant does not dissipate heat as well as pure water, however, which is why water is mixed with the coolant. It is important Continued on page 22 DECEMBER 2014 AUSPUFF DER
Porsche Water Cooling
21
Porsche Water Cooling Continued from page 21 for the cooling water to be distilled of all minerals. Tap water should only be added to a cooling system in an absolute emergency, as it contains minerals that can be deposited within the cooling system. Early Porsche water-cooled models with timing-belt driven water pumps should have the water pump replaced as a preventive measure during each timing belt replacement (usually every 4-6 years or 60,000 miles). Timing belt replacement is relatively labor-intensive in these models, and it would be a shame if a water pump begins to leak a few months after a timing belt replacement. Only a brand new, German-made water pump should be installed, as most of the aftermarket rebuilt water pumps for these models are junk. Otherwise, age is the enemy of these models, and the coolant should be flushed every 3-4 years. The cooling systems should be frequently checked for leaks.
996 water pump The later model Porsche sports cars (Boxster/996 and later) all use maintenance-free engine timing chains and have water pumps that are driven by the main accessory drive belt. The water pump used on these cars is prone to premature failure, some of which have happened in the 3040,000 mile mark, while many other Boxster/996/997 models have gone well over 100,000 miles without water pump failure.
22
DER
Because of this, some advocate prophylactic water pump replacement at 50Kmile intervals. This is not a bad idea, but it must be stated that these water pumps generally do not fail suddenly without warning. They almost always leak slightly at first, with a telltale stream of dried coolant emanating from the shaft. This is usually caught by a trained eye and highlights the importance of routine maintenance. AUSPUFF DECEMBER 2014
Even if your Porsche is not driven many miles annually, it should be inspected at least once per year!
Porsche coolant and/or distilled water and proceed immediately to your Porsche repair shop. If in doubt, have the car towed!
If the stain of dried coolant is missed, the water pump will eventually fail. This is sometimes immediately preceded by a grinding/worn bearing noise that is noticeable to the driver; other times the water pump bearing will fail dramatically and dump 3+ gallons of coolant onto the road. In either case, the car should be pulled over as soon as it is safe and the engine switched off to prevent engine overheating.
Besides the water pump, the plastic coolant reservoir/expansion tank is a common leak site. These coolant reservoirs are bright white when new but become yellow and brittle with age. This is the time to consider replacement of the reservoir.
In most cases of water pump failure, the offending pump is replaced (use only a Genuine Porsche part in this case!), the cooling system is filled and life goes on (as long as the engine was not severely overheated). The thermostat should be replaced with a lower-temperature version to help these normally hot-running engines run slightly cooler. In some instances of M96/M97engine water pump failure, the shaft wobbles enough to cause the plastic impeller blades to contact the engine case, and small pieces may break off. There is a chance of one or more of these pieces becoming lodged in one of the numerous narrow coolant passages in the cylinder heads. This could lead to localized overheating, which is insidious as this may not cause the coolant temperature gauge to read higher. Cracked cylinder heads can result, so have your water pump checked regularly!
997 water pump If the red overheat indicator light of your 1997-2004 water-cooled Porsche is flashing, but the temperature needle is in the normal range, this indicates that the coolant level is low. The level should be checked immediately! If the coolant level is low, there is a leak somewhere in the system, as engines do not consume coolant under normal circumstances. Add
An important maintenance consideration with modern water-cooled Porsches is to regularly check the front radiator ducts for debris. The front bumper cover air inlets are designed to efficiently channel air to the radiators, but this means that any dirt, leaves, trash, or other debris from the road is also admitted. My shop thoroughly vacuums out the radiator ducts with every service. Failure to do so can result in the section of the radiator core that is exposed to airflow to become packed with dirt and debris, which eventually composts and corrodes the aluminum radiator surface, causing a leak. The Cayenne and Panamera V8 water pumps have also been known to fail but are easily inspected for leaks and for a wobbling pulley while the engine is running. The early Cayenne V8 engines (20032006) were originally equipped with plastic water pipes under the intake manifold that run from the front to the rear of the engine. These pipes were known to become brittle and split open and dump all of the engine coolant out. Luckily, the vast majority of these pipes have been replaced with the updated aluminum versions by now. The DFI engines of the 2008-and-newer Cayenne and 2009-up sports cars use a socket-style thermostat to allow for maximum cooling system flow while open. This works brilliantly, except this style of thermostat has a tendency to jam within its sleeve in a partially open position, which results in the engine taking too long to fully warm up. The engine management system soon senses this emissions-increasing condition, and the “check engine” light will summarily illuminate with a logged “cooling system performance” fault. Thermostat replacement is the remedy in this case. The Cayenne V8 DFI engines require water pump removal to access the thermostat. Neglecting to install a new water pump as part of a thermostat replacement
Chris Andropoulos is the Service Porsche’s front-mounted radiators job would be a false economy indeed. The latest 981 and 991 sports cars incorporate a Byzantine system of electronically controlled thermostatic and check valves throughout the cooling system to precisely
control engine and transmission warmup and temperature. This system is fraught with future “check engine” light potential, so routine cooling system inspection and periodic coolant flushes will be mandatory for years to come! =
