Getting To Know PCA
M
y lovely wife, Pamuela, says I’m clueless sometimes. Duh! Actually, it’s more often than “sometimes.” Whether it’s not noticing something new around the house or not remembering all the details of a recent conversation, I admit that she is right. After 28-plus years of marriage, I am still amazed at what I don’t know.
The same holds true for the Porsche Club. Recently, we attended the Presidents meeting in Temecula, California. PCA Zone 8 Representative Tom Brown led an extraordinarily informative meeting for everyone, including the new Presidents like me. Talk about clueless -- after 13 years in the club, I had no idea that so much information was available on the www.PCA.org national website. Naturally, located therein are the typical website meat-and-potatoes, including contact information, club history, mission statement, and membership benefits, just for starters. Present and past issues of Porsche Panorama magazine are also available, along with my favorite trip through Fantasyland, “The Mart,” featuring classified advertisements of autos and accessories and where I can dream about owning and driving all sorts of wonderful cars. National events are also shown, such as the upcoming 60th Anniversary Porsche Parade, Rennsport Reunion V, and Escape to Black Hills 2015. While many of the events shown on the PCA National website are “geographically undesirable” (too darn far away!), it is still fun to read about what other regions are doing. What I have recently discovered is the amazing amount of technical information on the National website. There’s “Technical Q & A,” which answers very specific questions; “Experts,” technical gurus listed by Porsche model who you can contact directly with your concerns; “Technical News,” where you can read articles about various technical matters; and finally, “Technical Events,” showing the events that feature primarily technical information. Last year, I attended Tech Tactics West 2014 at Porsche Cars North America in Ontario, California. The day was filled with experts discussing matters ranging from aerodynamics to 911 evolution to a very detailed presentation on the 918 Spyder power generation, cooling, and electrical systems. Wow, is that one complicated machine! Some folks in the club are enjoying significant appreciation in the value of their cars. that can prevent incorrect coverage for our prized Porsches. These are only a few highlights from www.PCA.org. A bit closer to home is the Zone 8 website. What is Zone 8? PCA is divided into 13 geographic zones, each of which has a zone representative. Santa Barbara Region is one of, coincidentally, 13 regions in Zone 8. Zone 8 covers Southern California, Southern Nevada and Arizona. Is that more than you needed to know? Anyway, the Zone 8 website features events, events, and more events that are relatively close to home. Of particular interest are the competitive events listed, such as Autocross and Concours, where participants can earn Zone 8 points throughout the calendar year. Take advantage of these resources, which were created with one goal – so that we as Porsche owners can have the most fun with our cars while getting the best value from our membership. Feel free to contact me at any time with any questions you may have. See you soon at an event!

R.U.F. Rides The Rails To L.A.’s Union Station STORY BY JEANNE MCNAIR PHOTOS BY JOHN ALFENITO
O
n Thursday, February 19th, 29 members of the Retired & Unemployed Folks (R.U.F.) assembled at the Moorpark Metrolink station to embark on our monthly outing. While waiting for our train, we encountered fellow SBR member Terry Middlebrook, who looked around in surprise at all of the familiar faces. It turns out she was on her way to work in downtown Los Angeles, while we were on our way to do an L.A. Conservancy tour of historic Union Station. Along our interesting and scenic route -- particularly the dramatic rock formations in Simi -- we picked up three more members at other stations, bringing our group to a total of 31. The use of the Metrolink was enjoyed for both its comfort and convenience as well as for the opportunity it afforded to visit with friends. It was also an apt beginning for our fascinating foray into the history and beauty of Union Station. We formed into two groups, each accompanied by a knowledgeable

docent, both of whom are clearly passionate about their love of history and trains. We learned that Union Station, completed in 1939, was the last of the great train stations to be built in the U.S. This came to pass only after much controversy, litigation and the displacement of all of the residents of Chinatown on very short notice. Our docents noted the irony of the Chinese displacement, given the significant contribution that Chinese workers made to the expansion of the railroads in America. The station was an amalgam of six stations scattered throughout Southern California -- hence the name “Union” -- and was also a blend in the architectural sense. It is said that the architect was inspired by the Santa Barbara Courthouse and used a primarily Spanish
Colonial Revival style, but there are clearly other influences of the Mission, Beaux Arts, Art Deco and Moorish schools of design. Despite the eclectic styling, the exterior and interior of this imposing structure blend together beautifully. Our docent urged us to enter the station in the mindset of a traveler in the heyday of train travel when more than 100,000 people passed through the station in a day. Beautiful tile on the floor and lower parts of walls give way to marble and travertine topped with high walls of soft grey concrete, the latter mixed with ground corncobs, to create a surprisingly quiet and inviting space. To the left of the entrance is the massive ticketing concourse with its burnished wood counters, and
to the right is the imposing room that formerly housed the Harvey House restaurant, which is now used for special events. The huge waiting room has the original wood and upholstery chairs as well as the 3000-pound, individually-designed chandeliers. All of the station has been carefully refurbished in recent years, so it was sparkling in appearance. The waiting room is flanked on both sides with inviting patios featuring lush foliage and towering Jacaranda trees. Union Station today sees more than 35,000 travelers a day with the combination of Amtrak, Metrolink, the subway and the Los Angeles Metro Rail services, so it is still a vital and bustling hub in the modern age. =

Volunteering for this club activity can be a lot of fun. Not only do you see cars and drivers on the course, you meet other club members. SBR uses the money generated by this event to help sustain the club’s other non-revenue-generating activities throughout the year.
If you can volunteer any of your time, please go to http://tinyurl. com/AutoXCamarillo to register and indicate how much time you would be able to spend that day. Also, indicate your morning or afternoon availability. There are places for both drivers and volunteers to register, so please register as a volunteer. No prior autocross experience is necessary. We really appreciate your help in staging this event for the club.
If you are new to the club, volunteering is a great way to help out, learn what an autocross is all about, and get to know other club members, all at the same time. Specifically, we need volunteers who can either put in a full eight hours (approximately) or four hours in the morning or four hours in the
In the past, we asked drivers to assist with course maintenance when they were not actually driving, but we would like to line up more non-driver volunteers to allow the participants to be better rested and focused on their driving.

t was a perfect day for our drive as 69 SBR members and guests embarked on a journey through the beautiful countryside of the Santa Ynez Valley to explore some of California’s history and Spanish heritage. Along the route, we visited three of the 21 California missions that transformed life in this region.
We headed north on Hwy 154 to Los Olivos, and it was delightful to see 35 Porsches zipping through the twisty roads of Foxen Canyon and Alisos Canyon to Los Alamos. By the time we drove Hwy 135 over Harris Grade to Lompoc, we were all ready to stretch our legs at the first stop, the Mission La Purisima Concepcion, which was originally built in 1787. This was the 11th mission constructed in California and is the favorite of historians since it retains the flavor of the mission era with its architecture and exhibits. The current structure and grounds were rebuilt based on photos and drawings from the original mission, which was destroyed through earthquakes and the hands of time. After exploring the buildings and interesting exhibits, we returned to our Porsches and made the short drive to Buellton for a delicious buffet lunch at Pea Soup Andersen’s restaurant. Most everyone enjoyed a bowl of their famous pea soup with bacon, ham, cheese and onion toppings and indulged in a big piece of chocolate cake following the meal. At the restaurant, we had time to visit with other members and guests, including three PCA members from the CA Central Coast and San Gabriel Regions.
After lunch, we drove to the east end of Solvang to explore the Mission Santa Ines, which was founded in 1804. This was the 19th mission built and was named in honor of Saint Agnes, an early Christian martyr of the fourth century. (The Spanish name for Agnes is Ines.) The nearby town of Santa Ynez got its name from this same heritage. One of the favorite viewing spots at this compound was the serene Mission Garden of the Resurrection. We also enjoyed the vistas of this mission’s hilltop grounds, which overlook the Santa Ynez River Valley and the Santa Ynez and San Rafael mountain ranges.
A few members decided to drive to some wineries in the Solvang area, but most of the group drove back Hwy 154 to explore the Santa Barbara Mission, which many consider to be the queen of the missions. It was the 10th California mission built and was founded in 1786. It sits in a regal setting atop a hillside and is framed by the backdrop of the Santa Ynez Mountains. You can see the twin tower structure from vistas in Santa Barbara and observe its beauty from a distance. It’s the only mission with two bell towers and is also unique for its stone facade patterned after an ancient Latin temple in pre-Christian Rome. By the end of the day, we all had more insight about how the design and construction of these historic California missions were influenced by both European and Spanish cultures and the role religion played in the establishment of these outposts. =

Cayman GT4 & Carrera GTS Club Coupe TWO NORESCW HES P
orsche’s GT family is proud to announce the addition of an exciting new member, the Cayman GT4. This is the first Porsche GT sports car based on the Cayman and features components of the 911 GT3. Clocking a lap time of 7 minutes and 40 seconds on the North Loop of the Nürburgring, the Cayman GT4 earns the same lap time as the 2011 911 GT3 and positions itself as the new benchmark atop its market segment. The engine, chassis, brakes, and aerodynamic design of the Cayman GT4 are configured for maximum driving dynamics while retaining the versatility and everyday utility that are typical of the two-seater Porsche coupe. Powered by a 385 hp 3.8-liter flat-six engine derived from the 911 Carrera S engine, the Cayman GT4 transmits its power solely through a six-speed manual transmission with dynamic gearbox mounts. Zero to 60 mph is accomplished in 4.2 seconds; its top track speed is 183 mph. The chassis, which features a 30 mm lower ride height and a generously sized brake system, consists almost entirely of components from the 911 GT3. The exterior of the Cayman GT4 highlights it as a member of the Porsche GT family and provides a clear distinction to related mid-engine coupes. Three pronounced inlet openings at the front and a large fixed rear wing are part of an aerodynamic package which is systematically designed for downforce. Upon request, the performance capabilities of Cayman GT4 can be taken even further. Available options include the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system, full bucket seats made of carbon fiber composite, and a custom Sport Chrono Package featuring a Track Precision app. The interior of the Cayman GT4 focuses on maximizing the experience of unfiltered driving enjoyment for both driver and passenger. Standard sport seats, which are upholstered in a combination of leather and Alcantara®, offer excellent lateral support. The new Cayman GT4 sport steering wheel guarantees ideal control and direct steering feedback due to its compact dimensions. Technical aspects of this new GT sports car are based on the 911 GT3. As a mid-engine sports car and a prime example of driving dynamics in its class, it follows the conceptual tradition of such cars as the 904 GTS, 911 GT1, Carrera GT and 918 Spyder. The Porsche Cayman GT4 celebrates its world premiere in early March at the Geneva International Motor Show. This vehicle will arrive at U.S. dealers in July 2015. The starting MSRP for the Cayman GT4 is $84,600. MSRP does not include a destination charge of $995. =

elebrating six decades of the largest Porsche club organization in the world, Porsche Cars North America is commemorating this milestone with a 60-unit, limitedproduction run of the Club Coupe based on the 911 Carrera GTS. Known as the GTS Club Coupe, the 430 hp sports car is painted in a color unique to this model, appropriately named “Club Blau,” which was created exclusively for this anniversary edition by the Porsche Club of America. The GTS Club Coupe features the 44 mm wider body of the 911 Carrera 4 models with a rear-wheel-drive platform. SportDesign side mirrors, black framed Bi-Xenon™ headlights with Porsche’s Dynamic Light System, and taillights tinted in black are standard, while the doors are marked with black “Club Coupe” model designations, clearly distinguishing this unique 911. Painted in the newly created “Club Blau” color, the limited-edition model is also characterized by the SportDesign package, which is fitted as standard. A more pronounced front fascia as well as a “ducktail” rear spoiler gives the special car a striking, yet classic, appearance. 20-inch Sport Classic wheels painted in semi-gloss black with polished wheel centers and rim flanges are also standard on the GTS Club Coupe. The interior features stitching, seat belts, and rev counter in contrasting Carmine Red, while the dashboard trim strips, door trim and center console are finished in carbon fiber. The center compartment lid is embossed with a “60,” and the dashboard trim is personalized with “GTS Club Coupe 60 Years Porsche Club of America” lettering above the glove compartment. Stainless steel door sills read “GTS Club Coupe.” Powering the GTS Club Coupe is an enhanced version of the Carrera S engine, which is also found in the 911 Carrera GTS model variants. 430 hp propel the GTS Club Coupe from standstill to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds when equipped with the optional PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplung) dual-clutch, seven-speed transmission.). A third center radiator ensures consistent performance in all conditions. A standard Sport Exhaust system with black chrome tips accentuates the Boxer engine note. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), incorporating adaptive dampers and a 10 mm lower ride, and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), as well as the Sport Chrono Package with dynamic engine mounts, contributes to the car’s optimal handling characteristics. The GTS Club Coupe will be launched in June 2015. Porsche Club of America members will have the opportunity to purchase one of 59 vehicles, and PCA members will also be eligible to win the initial display vehicle. Details are on www.pca.org. The MSRP is $136,060, not including a destination charge of $995. =

The Tech Report
Porsche Variable-Displacement Oil Pumps BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor
A
uto enthusiasts are used to adages like “there is no free lunch” and that everything is a compromise. However, modern technology sometimes allows for automotive components that enhance both performance and economy with virtually no downsides. A prime example of this is Porsche’s variable-displacement engine oil pump, which was first installed in the 2008 DFI Cayenne engines and in the DFI 987/997 sports car engines the following year. All current Porsche engines now use this demand-controlled oil pump. A mechanical engine oil pump is driven either by the crankshaft or camshaft (or by the intermediate shaft in the case of the Porsche 911 and M96/ M97 engines). Most Porsche oil pumps use a pair of spur gears that are meshed together inside a small cavity. When the engine turns, the tight tolerances of the oil pump gears cause engine oil to be drawn from the oil sump at the bottom and into the pump cavity, where it is pressurized and forced though internal oil passages, also known as galleries. The galleries distribute oil to the engine crankshaft main and rod bearings, cylinder walls, camshafts, valve train, and any other accessories that require lubrication or oil pressure to operate.
i
DE R
AUSPUFF MARCH 2O15
The viscosity (resistance to flow, which is determined by the weight of the oil) and temperature of the engine oil also affect oil pressure. To prevent the oil pressure from becoming too great at higher RPM and/or when the oil is very cold, a spring-loaded oil pressure relief valve is built into the pump to allow oil to bypass the pressure side of the pump and return to the inlet.
of a healthy engine will jump up to the 4-5 bar mark when the engine is revved up. The relationship between lubrication requirements and the internal clearances and tolerances of an engine is a balancing act for engine designers. A certain pressure and flow is needed to provide adequate lubrication and to help cool internal engine parts, but any increase in oil pressure or volume saps engine power and is detrimental to fuel economy, as more energy is required to drive a larger oil pump or to force the same oil through smaller passages. Advances in materials technology and manufacturing tolerances
Engine oil pumps are positive-displacement pumps, which means that the faster the engine turns, the greater the oil pressure and volume will be.
Engine oil pumps are positivedisplacement pumps, which means that the faster the engine turns, the greater the oil pressure and volume will be. A certain oil pressure is necessary to maintain the desired flow
22
and lubrication characteristics for any given engine. This pressure is created by resistance to the flow created by the oil pump, and is determined by precise clearances between the crankshaft main and connecting rod bearings, along with the size of the oil galleries and passages.
Many Porsches are equipped with a 5 bar (shorthand for “barometric pressure” - 1 bar=14.7 PSI at sea level) oil pressure gauge that measures in denominations of 1 bar. When the engine oil is at ambient temperature, it is thicker and more viscous. In an engine with a mechanical oil pump, the oil pressure gauge will usually be pegged at the upper 5 bar mark after cold startup. As the heat of combustion warms the engine oil, it becomes thinner, and the oil pressure drops at lower RPM. A general rule of thumb for older air-cooled Porsche engines is a minimum of 1 bar of oil pressure per 1000 RPM. When the engine is at full operating temperature, idle oil pressure of 1 to 1.5 bar is considered normal, and the oil pressure
have enabled engine manufacturers to use progressively tighter bearing and piston-to-cylinder clearances. Along with modern low-tension piston rings, this has enabled manufacturers to use lighter weight oils with less friction, which improves fuel economy and power output while reducing exhaust emissions. The ability to utilize thinner engine oil also enhances its capability as a hydraulic fluid to operate hydraulic valve lifters, timing chain tensioners, camshaft timing adjustment solenoids, and more. Despite these advances, ever stringent fuel economy standards and consumer demands for engine output have driven engineers to further enhance efficiency. Enter
raise the oil pressure threshold to protect the engine as the oil thins out.
Porsche’s demand-controlled, variable-displacement oil pump, which was developed to narrow the void between the diametrically opposed goals of economy and protection of vital engine parts at all temperatures. The modern Porsche oil pump uses a pair of spur gears to distribute oil as in previous designs; the input gear is driven by the crankshaft, but the output gear is able to move axially. This changes the area of the tooth engagement between the two pump gears, which allows the oil volume and pressure to vary. The movement of the output gear is controlled by an electronic solenoid that is governed by the engine control module. The solenoid regulates oil pressure on either side of the oil pump output gear. When the solenoid is de-energized, the oil pressure is the same on both sides of the movable gear, and both gears are fully engaged for maximum oil pressure and flow. When the solenoid is energized, it changes the oil pressure on one side of the movable gear; the exact pressure differential between the opposing chambers determines the
position of the output gear versus the input gear, thus varying amount of oil that is pumped though the engine. The desired oil pressure constantly changes, and is calculated by the engine control unit, which uses input data from the existing sensors that monitor engine temperature, RPM, load (throttle position), transmission gear ratio, and expected load change. Therefore, only the exact amount of oil necessary for lubrication is distributed through the engine, minimizing friction and wasted energy, which improves both fuel economy and engine power output. When a Porsche engine with the variable oil pump is cold started, the oil pressure gauge will usually indicate the same 2.5 bar of oil pressure at idle as it will when the engine oil is warmed up, thanks to the variable displacement oil pump. Observant drivers will also notice that the oil pressure reading does not vary much with changes in engine load and RPM, as the electronics ensure that it stays constant. Only when the engine oil gets very hot from sustained high RPM driving in high temperatures or in a race track environment will the DME control unit
As with any Porsche system, routine maintenance is the key to its longevity. Annual oil changes (or at least every 7,500 miles) with Porsche-approved oil will ensure that the moving parts of the lubrication system stay sludge-free and function properly. =

In this diagram of a Porsche variable-displacement oil pump, the oil pressure control solenoid (29) varies oil pressure on either side of the movable oil pump gear (18B), enabling it to slide back and forth, thus changing overall engine oil volume and pressure as necessary.
So far, the variable oil pump has been largely trouble-free, despite its increased complexity over its purely mechanical forebears. The movable oil pump gear is spring-loaded on one side and defaults to the full oil pressure position if the electronic control valve or its circuit fails. The control valve is able to be replaced without the need to remove the oil pan or pump assembly.

1989 ½ Porsche 964 Carrera 4 – FOR SALE With only 52,500 original miles this 911 is truly a work of art and this car has never been a daily driver. Transmission recently rebuilt, new clutch, new tires. Clean CarFax. Due to the late 80s recession there are very few of these cars and I was told that they made under 20 in this combination in 1989. I’m only asking $55,000. Contact Gabe (805) 242-2336. (02/15) Der Auspuff accepts classified advertising limited to 50 words or less for Porsche cars, parts, and Porsche-related items. The Last Word
NOT MELTING? - At SBR’s February 7 breakfast meeting in Camarillo, the rain was kind enough to hold off until just as the gathering
began to disperse. As the sparkling Porsches scurried off in the mist, our president’s beloved blue Turbo was the last to leave the parking lot. As this photo attests, Porsches DO NOT MELT in the rain. Thanks to Mike Hodson for passing along this nice shot of his car perfectly covered in moisture with a dry silhouette underneath.
