PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA • SANTA BARBARA REGION presents the TIRE RACK Street Survival School For Teenage Drivers at the Camarillo Airport

IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN DRIVING – IT’S ABOUT LIVING! Only Licensed or Permitted drivers AGES 15-21 are eligible to sign up. Register at: www.streetsurvival.org/school-schedule-registration/ The primary emphasis of The Tire Rack Street Survival® program is a “hands-on” driving experience in real world situations. We use your own car to teach you about its handling limits and how you can control them. Students are given two hours of classroom training interspersed with a series of driving exercises with a coach while driving their own car. Students practice various braking and avoidance exercises using a variety of cone configurations, and they practice controlling their cars on a wet skid pad. Challenging courses are created in a controlled area to allow the students to experience abnormal car behavior and then learn the proper way to handle the new situation. This provides the students with useful skills to help avoid accidents and to learn how to keep their cars under control in a skid.

SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 2015 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Camarillo Airport Cost: $75 per student (includes lunch)

For more information go to: www.streetsurvival.org or call 502-649-4871 PCA/SBR local contacts: Ted Lighthizer tlighthizer@sbcglobal.net Doreen Pankow dpankow@sbcglobal.net

The students will become more observant of the traffic situations they find themselves in. They’ll learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. As the students master the application of physics to drive their cars, they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves.

The President’s Column MIKE HODSON

I

’ll never forget my first ride in a Porsche. My best friend from high school and I hadn’t seen each other for several years, and we finally agreed to get together. Imagine my surprise when he showed up in a bright green 914-4! Understandably proud of his new ride, we took a drive right away. At first, I was not impressed with the acceleration, having been raised on American V-8 muscle cars. A sharp corner was next, and before I could scream like a schoolgirl, we made it -- no drama. If I had tried that maneuver in my car, the sidewalk would have been our best friend. That was the day I began to appreciate handling versus raw horsepower. The next page in my Porsche memory book was when a colleague brought his girlfriend’s yellow 1976 911S to work. After a short cruise, I was hooked for life. The perfect blend of performance and comfort, I had found my dream car. Not long after that day, my dream came true -- a 1969 911T Targa became my daily driver. Some days, the dream felt more like a nightmare as the euphoria phase became the reality phase with wilting repair bills. Emotion had gotten the better of me, and I literally paid the price. Since then, I have had the pleasure of driving and riding in various Porsche models, both two- and fourdoor. Rides and drives in RUF-modified machines, including the legendary Yellow Bird, made me appreciate what could be done to make an outstanding automobile even better.

Skepticism was my first reaction when learning about the Cayenne. Having driven and owned other SUVs, I was prepared to be disappointed. After my first drive on a test track, the Cayenne proved worthy of the Porsche badge. An article in Der Auspuff gave me a chance to express my surprise and support of the “interloper.” Hard to believe it has been over 10 years since the Cayenne was introduced. Annually the biggest selling model for Porsche, the Cayenne provides valuable development revenue for the sports car models. Now a very good friend owns a Cayenne GTS, arguably the best four-door people mover on the planet. Sign me up! Another good friend offered a drive in his 997 GT3 several years back. Never, never, never did I imagine anything that would turn my head away from my beloved Turbo. Emotions during the drive were conflicting – feeling the car reacting instantaneously to the slightest input was magical, but the fear of something bad happening was sobering. I loved/hated to see the drive end! The Panamera caught me by surprise. A four-door Porsche sedan? Seriously? Once again, a demo drive at speed proved the car worthy. I thought luxury and performance were mutually exclusive. Wow, was I wrong! Why am I relating my personal Porsche history? Because we all have our passion for the cars we love and passion for those we don’t. I welcome and enjoy all the Porsche models -- two-door, four-door and no-door -- into the Santa Barbara Region and especially their owners. We are all members of the same team. Now let’s go out and enjoy!

HELP WANTED

Our region needs new managers for The Goodie Store. Rick & Martie Theise are moving back to Georgia, which necessitates a change in Goodie Store management. This volunteer position requires a commitment of time and work. Your responsibilities will include inventory procurement, storage, transport and sales. Ideally, The Goodie Store will be open for business at a majority of our monthly breakfast meetings and at a few major events throughout the year. This job has worked most efficiently in the past when shared by two people. If you would like to join the SBR Board of Directors and become more active with the club, and if you have the time and energy to commit to this position, please contact President Mike Hodson (805-279-2252) ASAP for more information. The New Porsche GT3 RS: The Ultima

STORY & PHOTOS FROM PORSCHE CARS NORTH AMERICA

T

he new Porsche 911 GT3 RS breaks down the barrier between road-going sports cars and race cars. It is equipped with the maximum amount of motorsport technology that is currently possible in a street-legal 911 suitable for everyday driving. Extensive modifications to its drivetrain, aerodynamics, and lightweight design take performance to an even higher level than the 911 GT3. With a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time of seven minutes and 20 seconds, the new 911 GT3 RS surpasses the 911 GT3 by five seconds, making it the fastest current generation 911 on the famous German racetrack. The 911 GT3 RS is celebrating its world premiere at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show. Motorsport expertise is the driving force behind this superior performance. The 911 GT3 RS is powered by a four-liter, six-cylinder engine developing 500 hp and 338 lb.-ft. of torque, combined with a specially developed PDK transmission. The engine has the largest displacement and most power of any naturally aspirated engine with direct fuel injection in the 911 family, accelerating the high-performance sports car from zero

to 60 miles per hour in 3.1 seconds and propelling it through the quarter mile on the track in 11.2 seconds. Functions such as declutching by “paddle neutral” – which is comparable to pressing the clutch with a conventional manual gearbox – and speed limiting via the Pit Speed button have been adapted from motorsport use. They give drivers more freedom in terms of driving dynamics, while providing them with a maximum level of control and engagement. The 911 GT3 RS is a masterpiece of intelligent lightweight design. For the first time, the roof is made of magnesium; carbon fiber is used for the engine and luggage compartment lids, and other components are made of weight-saving materials. This makes the RS model around 22 pounds (10 kilograms) lighter than the 911 GT3. Furthermore, the lightweight roof lowers the sports car’s center of gravity, which improves its already excellent lateral dynamics. The body comes from the 911 Turbo, and it signifies its status as a raceinspired driving machine with its RS-specific aerodynamic enhancements. The front spoiler lip, which sits

characteristics, even sharper steering response, and even greater cornering speeds.

A 30-centimeter-wide recess extends centrally over the CFRP hood and the magnesium roof. This feature is a stylistic reference to the recess on the luggage compartment lid of the classic 911 models with air-cooled engines, while highlighting the two largest lightweight components of the new 911 GT3 RS. Another characteristic is the unique front wheel arch air vents that extend into the upper section of the fenders – just like on purebred race cars. They increase downforce at the front axle.

The interior design of the 911 GT3 RS with Alcantara® elements is based on the current 911 GT3. One key new feature is the full bucket seats, which are based on the carbon bucket seats from the 918 Spyder. The optional Sport Chrono Package features – in addition to its integrated timers – the Porsche Track Precision app for smartphone use. The Track Precision app can be used to have times automatically measured via GPS, and to log data on a smartphone for many driving parameters such as vehicle speed, lateral acceleration as well as deceleration and acceleration in the driving direction. It manages this data and lets the driver share and compare it with results from other drivers. The 911 GT3 RS can be ordered now, and it will launch in the U.S. in early July of 2015. In the United States, the MSRP is $175,900, not including a $995 destination charge. =

PORSchE POKER RUN THE COLOR OF MONEY

STORY BY MIKE HODSON PHOTOS BY JOHN ALFENITO & NICOLAS LIAKAS Pamuela Hodson fans out the cards at the starting point where everyone made their first pick.

a gotta love springtime, especially in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. We get to enjoy the best weather of the year -- not too cold (oh, those brutal Santa Barbara winters!), not too warm, with ideal humidity most of the time. Everything is blooming, and despite the dismal amount of rain we have received, the hills are as green as they will be all year. Green hills, green valleys, green for St. Patrick’s Day, and green – the color of money. On the morning of March 21st, money was the focus of the day. Everyone collected their first “card” at the starting location in beautiful Agoura Hills. Emotions and competitive spirits ran high early, the euphoric mood palpably strong in the air. As each card was drawn, the players immediately ranked their winning chances. Face cards are always lusted after, their perceived value potentially much greater than their actual value. Some brave souls elected to have their playing partner draw for them. “High value” cards were rewarded with smiles, “low value” cards, well, not so much.

The usual announcements were made regarding speed limits, no prizes for finishing first, etc. New for this year was the half-joking admonition, “If you make your passenger ill, you are disqualified.”

Many of us, myself included, have a rather strong competitive streak that needs to be put away for such events. Finally, 36 Porsches containing 70 poker players set off on a gorgeous spring day, visions of victory dancing in their heads. The drive began rather sedately, and then “those twistin’, turnin’ roads” (made famous in the song) were met. We have a plethora of fun driving/riding/cycling routes in our area. The trick is to choose those that have not been recently used, combined with the “fun to drive” factor, even from the right seat. Soon after the start, up we climbed, reaching our highest elevation of the day, 1,936 feet, after only 7.7 miles. Quickly we came upon card stop #2, staffed by our friendly, efficient and, most importantly, noncorruptible volunteer. Descending back down, the struggle was to keep our eyes on the road and not be distracted by the drop-dead gorgeous views. Up, over and sideways down, and then another card stop was soon on the radar. Then came a welcome respite from the forearm-workout twisties as a leisurely (for some) cruise down PCH was next. The final en route card stop #4 brought home reality. Players, now with a handful of nothing, realized that finishing in the top three was

Therefore, it was time to lean back and enjoy the rest of the drive. Our last peak of the day was only 1,048 feet above sea level, but it was worth the effort.

Three fives took first place!

Too soon for some and not soon enough for others, the entourage turned in to Dos Vientos Community Park. Everyone had their poker sheets at the ready, anxious to compare with the other players. Unlike previous iterations, the hands were moderate, not extreme. Picnic lunches were unpacked, with an eclectic variety of eats from mundane to magnificent! Everyone got exactly what they wanted to eat and drink, with grand conversation and camaraderie adding to the fun. After careful scrutineering by the official scrutineers, the winners were announced. Kent Bodin slid into third place, with Phyllis Weaver taking second by half-a-whisker! First place went to Pam Alfenito, the much-deserving Der Auspuff widow.

Below: Most of the 70 participants ready to embark on a spirited tour in their quest for cash.

Many thanks are due to our volunteers: Neil McAuliffe, Pam and Chris Hodson, Dave and Sue Stone, Brian and Linda Rubino, plus the unsung heroes of our club, Ted Lighthizer and Doreen Pankow. Finally, the event would not have occurred without our sponsor, Rusnak Westlake Porsche. Thanks to everyone, and congrats to all for a wonderful day! = DE R

The students will become more observant of the traffic situations they find themselves in. They’ll learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. As the students master the application of physics to drive their cars, they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves.

The Tech Report

Servicing The Low-Mileage Porsche BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor

P

orsches were designed to be driven, and driven hard. If your Porsche could talk, it would tell you that it wants to be driven every day! Unfortunately, this is not always possible or desirable in our daily lives, so the Porsche is often left to languish in the garage while the grocery-getter is used. Porsches also tend to stay holed away during periods of inclement weather. In response to this, I must quote our club president, Mike Hodson: “Porsches do not melt in the rain!” Regardless of the reason, many Porsches are only driven a few thousand miles per year or less. Because of Porsche’s increased mileage-based maintenance intervals for its modern cars, some of these low-mileage cars are actually under-maintained. A certain level of maintenance and care is necessary to keep your Porsche in prime condition and ready to go the next time the open road beckons.

Engine Oil

As discussed in my inaugural tech column (see the February 2012 issue of Der Auspuff), modern synthetic engine oil provides superior engine protection for many miles, but the critical additive package that is blended into the oil has a shelf life. Therefore, annual oil changes are strongly recommended, regardless AUSPUFF APRIL 2O15

DE R

22

of mileage. Porsche itself implemented this policy several years ago in response to sludge issues that resulted from its previous 15,000mile intervals. Infrequent running and/or short trips also promotes moisture buildup in the engine crankcase, which in turn leads to increased potential for harmful sludge buildup. In short, change the engine oil every year. It is cheap insurance!

Transmission/Gearbox Oil

Manual gearbox oil tends to not be as highly stressed as engine oil, but it does require periodic oil level checks and replacement. The recommended interval in modern Porsche gearboxes is 60,000 miles. If the car in question has fewer miles but is coming up on its 10th birthday, a gearbox oil change is a good idea. Like engine oil, gear oil

contains additives that do break down over time. In addition, most Porsches use transaxles, which means that the gearbox and differential share the same oil, which increases wear and tear on the lubricant. When the gearbox oil is drained, it can be inspected for debris that would indicate synchronizer wear or any other issues. Tiptronic and PDK transmissions should also have their fluids changed at 60K miles or 10 years; the Tiptronic transmission has a fluid filter that should be replaced at the same time.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is hygroscopic by nature, meaning that it absorbs moisture from the air, whether the vehicle is driven or not. When exposed to air, brake fluid moisture

content tends to increase by about 1% per year. Levels of as low as 2% can cause the fluid nearest to the brake rotors to boil during extended periods of hard braking. Moisture in the system can also corrode internal brake system components in the long term. Therefore, brake fluid should be flushed every two years, regardless of mileage. This includes the clutch hydraulic circuit of manual transmission-equipped Porsches.

Spark Plugs

I must say that I have never encountered a seized spark plug or damaged threads in any of the engines in question, even when the original 10- to 12-year old spark plugs have been removed. Difficultto-remove spark plugs can be an issue in colder and/or wetter climates than Southern California, so if your car has previously resided in such an environment, prophylactic replacement after four years would be a good idea.

Air Filters

Again, Porsche specifies various mileage-based engine air filter replacement intervals based on the engine and the size of the air filter(s) in question. For example, the Panamera uses a huge filter element that does not require replacement until 80,000 miles! However, the factory also recommends replacing all air filters every four years, regardless of mileage. This requirement is perhaps more dubious than the timebased spark plug requirement, as air filters tend to have a very long shelf life and do not appreciably wear when not in use. My shop will normally inspect engine and cabin air filters during a major service and replace as necessary, as the dirtiness of an air filter varies based on how and where the car is driven.

Battery

As discussed in the March 2010 column, modern batteries will discharge slightly even while sitting on a shelf. If your Porsche normally sits idle for periods of several weeks, a digital battery trickle charger/ maintainer is vital to ensure that the engine will start when desired and that the battery will last more than a year or two! In addition to the above, an annual inspection of your Porsche by a pair of trained eyes will ensure that everything is in optimal condition. Any potential issues that are noted can be addressed before they become expensive problems! =

Chris Andropoulos

is the Service Manager and a technician at Schneider Autohaus in Santa Barbara (a Der Auspuff advertiser). Chris is a lifelong Porsche “nut” and is fascinated with and knowledgeable about all Porsches, from 356s to the latest GT3s. When he’s not racing his daily-driven 944 Turbo at PCA and POC track events, he can be found enjoying the beaches, ocean, and mountains of beautiful Santa Barbara. chris@schneiderautohaus.com

APRIL 2O15 AUSPUFF DE R

Porsche has a prescribed spark plug replacement interval for all of its engines, usually expressed in terms of mileage. This can be anywhere from 24,000-60,000 miles, depending on the engine (see your owner’s manual for more info). However, for its model year 2001 and newer engines, Porsche stipulates spark plug replacement every four years for all models. This is likely to prevent the possibility of the spark plugs becoming partially seized in the aluminum cylinder heads.

1969 Porsche 911T – FOR SALE Owned car since 1982 (have known car since it was new). Taken down to bare metal about 10 years ago, no rust, painted Guards Red. Engine replaced about 14 years ago with a completely rebuilt 1973 2.4L carbureted engine(now has 21,000 miles on it). Also, added a 21-gallon touring fuel tank. Engine powder coated 2014, new clutch 2014, all instruments in good working order. Interior in very good condition. Have original radio and manual. Drives very well and is really a beautiful example of an early 911. Will provide additional photos on request and contact for local mechanic, if needed. Asking $69,000. Contact Jay Midgley at (805) 642-6476 (03/15) 1989 ½ Porsche 964 Carrera 4 – FOR SALE – PRICE REDUCED With only 52,500 original miles this 911 is truly a work of art and this car has never been a daily driver. Transmission recently rebuilt, new clutch, new tires. Clean CarFax. Due to the late 80s recession there are very few of these cars and I was told that they made under 20 in this combination in 1989. I’m only asking $47,000. Contact Gabe (805) 242-2336. (02/15)
