PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA • SANTA BARBARA REGION presents the TIRE RACK Street Survival School For Teenage Drivers at the Camarillo Airport
IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN DRIVING – IT’S ABOUT LIVING! Only Licensed or Permitted drivers AGES 15-21 are eligible to sign up. Register at: www.streetsurvival.org/school-schedule-registration/ The primary emphasis of The Tire Rack Street Survival® program is a “hands-on” driving experience in real world situations. We use your own car to teach you about its handling limits and how you can control them. Students are given two hours of classroom training interspersed with a series of driving exercises with a coach while driving their own car. Students practice various braking and avoidance exercises using a variety of cone configurations, and they practice controlling their cars on a wet skid pad. Challenging courses are created in a controlled area to allow the students to experience abnormal car behavior and then learn the proper way to handle the new situation. This provides the students with useful skills to help avoid accidents and to learn how to keep their cars under control in a skid.
SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 2015 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Camarillo Airport Cost: $75 per student (includes lunch)
For more information go to: www.streetsurvival.org or call 502-649-4871 PCA/SBR local contacts: Ted Lighthizer tlighthizer@sbcglobal.net Doreen Pankow dpankow@sbcglobal.net
The students will become more observant of the traffic situations they find themselves in. They’ll learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. As the students master the application of physics to drive their cars, they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves.

Only careful powers of observation and clever thinking will put you in the winners’ circle. The top three teams, as determined by the highest number of correct answers, will be our winners and receive prizes. You will need a driver in a Porsche, a navigator (not in a Lincoln), and a clipboard with pen or pencil. Water, sunglasses, and sunscreen may come in handy, too. The rally will end at Dos Vientos Center in Newbury Park. There, we’ll be treated to a great barbecue lunch from Q-Time BBQ. Celebrate The 4th of July The Old-Fashioned Way
…not by simply watching it from the sidelines but by being a part of it! Our club will slowly cruise down Santa Barbara’s State Street past the large crowd lining the boulevard with our Porsches decorated in 4th of July red, white, and blue finery. (A large part of the fun and camaraderie of this day is actually decorating our cars at the staging area alongside our fellow PCA/SBR members.) Three years ago, the Porsche Club was invited to take part in Santa Barbara’s 50th Annual 4th of July parade. We had such a good time that we decided to make it an annual event. The Porsches were so popular that parade officials moved our Porsches to the front of the parade! Porsche Club members who have participated agree that they had the time of their lives. Cost for this day of fun is practically free – only a $5.00 per person activity fee. Please send your checks, made out to PCA/ SBR, to our parade coordinator, Nadine Tracy, at the address below.
As the parade officials do not decide staging locations until we get closer to the 4th of July, all of you who sign up will receive additional information as soon as it’s transmitted to Nadine. You can plan on meeting mid-morning to line up alongside the parade route. Details of other Santa Barbara 4th of July celebratory events and activities following the parade will be given to you by Nadine as soon as they are made public. Mark your calendars and remember the date – SATURDAY, JULY 4, 2015! Be certain to contact Nadine and sign up early to reserve your spot in the parade. Fill out the form below and mail it with your check today.
Reserve your spot in the Parade by filling out this form and mailing, emailing, or calling: Nadine Tracy, 3708 Greggory Way, #5, Santa Barbara, CA 93105, Email: nadine356@gmail.com Phone: 805-448-7929

Santa Barbara County DRIVE, WINE & DINE Saturday, July 18, 2015 Join us for a scenic and exciting drive over the San Marcos Pass from Santa Barbara through Solvang and Buellton to our ultimate destination, the 1876 stagecoach and train stop of Los Alamos, California. On the way, we’ll visit the Lafond Winery in Buellton. In the past five years, LaFond has won over 20 medals for their extraordinary wines. While there, we’ll enjoy wine tasting paired with delicious appetizers. Members of our club can purchase bottles of wine for 15% off the regular prices. Wine tasting is optional at $10/person.
After the refreshing stop at Lafond, we’ll drive a couple of beautiful twisty roads into Los Alamos and the “Full of Life Flatbreads” restaurant. Since its opening, the restaurant has won many awards for its unique menu, including Santa Barbara’s “Local Heroes” award three times. Their specialty is all-natural, tasty flatbread pizzas and salads. “It’s more than a meal. It’s truly a gastronomic experience.” The flavorful flatbread pizzas are 100% handmade. We’ll enjoy a starter plate and salads and then our flatbread pizzas. With the exception of wine and beer, drinks are included. We will meet at 8:45 a.m. at Santa Barbara Auto Group for a prompt 9:30 a.m. departure. Complimentary coffee and pastries will be available at SBAG. The cost for this fun day of driving and socializing with your Porsche Club friends is only $38.00 per person.
Please complete and mail this form and check payable to PCA/SBR to: Howard Rubenstein, PO Box 4855, Thousand Oaks, CA 91359. No refunds after July 8th.

Worth the Effort
done. Having an absolutely awesome partner helps to smooth the path.
L
ife is short. During my 50th year on this planet, in the space of four months I lost five friends and family members, including my Dad. All of a sudden, mortality was a reality, staring me in the face. For the first time, it struck me that I’d better get my keister in gear -- the future is now, so get busy! Procrastinating became unacceptable, the years were flying by, and my bucket list was not getting any shorter. My chosen career was taking a terrible toll on me and my family. I was strapped to the treadmill and didn’t realize what was happening. Tough decisions had to be made sooner rather than later. Everything meaningful we do in life is challenging. Staying happily married, raising children, and earning a livelihood -- they all require hard work, dedication, and compromise. Setbacks abound, and sometimes it’s one step forward and two steps back. We grit our teeth, put our heads down, and press on. My problem was target fixation: Too much career, not enough wife and children. As my focus changed, I began to realize the importance and responsibility of being not just a father and husband but also of deserving the coveted titles of “Dad” and “Honey.” The rewards and satisfaction of being thrilled with your marriage and your children’s lives are easier said than
Hobbies, interests, and adventure require the same level of commitment to be meaningful. My mother was a watercolor artist, and she worked, struggled, and agonized trying to perfect her skills. So many paintings never got finished, as the beginning was not up to her expectations. We knew a special moment had occurred when the completed product was proudly displayed. Adventure activities bring their own set of challenges. The physical demands can be daunting, and the mental toughness required may be even more so. “What have I done, and what will happen next?” are common refrains during the low points. Fear of failure, peer group pressure, and plain old stubbornness allow many to rise to the occasion, much to their surprise. I would like to encourage all of our members to follow their dreams, cross off those bucket list items, take the bull by the horns, and get out of your comfort zone. This is not to suggest taking foolish risks, like free-climbing El Capitan in Yosemite. Pick up that musical instrument you always dreamed of playing, go on that trip now instead of “someday,” learn to drive your Porsche better than you thought possible via trying an autocross, start learning that skill that always intrigued you, and give your loved ones a hug and tell them how much they mean to you. Embrace the challenge, realize that the lows make the highs feel that much better, and feel the endorphin-fueled euphoria when the soreness doesn’t matter. You will know when the sacrifices are worth the rewards. The emotion is very powerful. Don’t get discouraged, and don’t give up. What you are trying to accomplish is worth the effort.

The R.U.F. Report
The Nethercutt Museum
E
ighteen members of the Retired & Unemployed Folks (R.U.F.) gathered for a tour of the Nethercutt Collection on April 16, 2015.
This collection, which is housed in two enormous buildings in Sylmar, was started by J.B. & Dorothy Nethercutt in 1971. It is a unique amalgamation of rare collectibles ranging from mechanical musical instruments and antique furniture to the true heart of the collection: over 250 American and European automobiles dating from 1898 to 1997. The Nethercutts, both now deceased, were associated with Merle Norman Cosmetics. J.B. Nethercutt’s aunt, Merle Norman, raised him as her son, and they eventually ran the business together. From the wealth amassed, J.B. was able to build this beautiful collection, which he was passionate about sharing with others. The collection is open year-round and admission is free.
We were given a fascinating docentguided tour of the building housing the Lower Salon, Grand Salon, Mezzanine and Music Room and were able to tour the other building on our own. The Lower Salon is a tantalizing introduction to the whole collection, offering 25 vintage automobiles, including a beautiful 1956 356A Porsche in pristine condition. All of the cars have informational placards with provenance and price: This Porsche sold new for $3,480! Also present in the lower salon are nickelodeons, music boxes, porcelain dolls and David Winter cottages. Ascending a grand staircase, we arrived in the opulent and visually stunning Grand Salon. With its marble columns, crystal chandeliers and painted ceilings, it’s deliberately reminiscent of the great auto showrooms of the 1920s. On display there are more than 30 colorful vintage cars from the 1910s through the 1930s. Among the many cars was an amazing Duesenberg that was named Best of Show at Pebble Beach. On this portion of the tour, it was pointed out that a dominant theme of the entire collection
is “functional fine art.” All of the musical collectibles are in working order and frequently played. Likewise, the automobiles are regularly serviced and driven. We finished our tour in the Music Room where we were introduced to orchestrions, European automated music machines capable of producing anything from a violin concert to a full orchestra presentation. Also in the Music Room were player pianos and the Mighty Wurlitzer Pipe Organ on which resonant productions from “The Phantom of the Opera “ and “An Affair to Remember” were presented. This was a fascinating place to visit. It’s clear that J.B. Nethercutt was enthralled with all things mechanical, hence the breadth of the collections from cars to pipe organs. It is also evident that he and his wife wanted a legacy that allowed others the opportunity to share the beauty of these many unique collections. After our tour, the group went to Caruso’s restaurant and enjoyed a pleasant lunch and visit with friends. =

pringtime in scenic Fontana, California means only one thing if you are a Porsche enthusiast. It is time for the annual California Festival of Speed (CFOS), the largest Zone 8 event of the year. The variety of activities is astounding – PCA club racing, concours, new car display, vendor row, autocross test drives, swap meet, track tours, food court...the list goes on and on. Certainly the CFOS is the best value on the planet, as it costs only $10.00 per car to park, and admission is free! Per tradition, our group went on Saturday, trying to see everything in one busy day. Entering the parking lot, we noticed that banners had been put up (new this year) attempting to group cars by model (356, 914, 924, 928, 944, 996, etc.). Kudos to Zone 8 for a good try, but as we all know, organizing Porsche drivers is like herding cats. Each designated parking area was, shall we say, an eclectic mix of cars. Nonetheless, the variety, quality and quantity of spectator cars was outstanding. “Longhood” 911s? Beautiful 928s? Drop-dead gorgeous 991 Turbo S? Yep, they were all there in row after row. The swap meet was small but tasty. Everything from wheels to the “wonderful-what-is-it?” Treasure hunters were busy combing through the displays looking for that rare bit of unobtanium. Money was changing hands and deals were being made, which is always good. Next up for us was viewing the autocross, where you could zip around the course in a new 911 or Cayman. This year the instructors were from various PCA regions. You have to admire the skill and fortitude of those folks. We went back to this very popular venue several times to check on the wait. It was quite long the whole day. My personal favorite area is the pits, where you can see the race cars up close, talk to the drivers and crew, and be amazed at some of the serious, professional

teams at work. While there are plenty of the “run what you brung” racers, there are also lots of huge transporters filled with cars, tools, tires and, apparently, money. The level of commitment is impressive, the investment substantial. Each year a different car catches my eye or ears or both. While “my” car is seldom the winner, it is fun to root for a favorite. Surprisingly, our group agreed that “my” car was the pick of the litter. Lined up along the pit fence were a few tasty morsels, including an original Porsche 962 in “Leyton House” turquoise livery (seen at left); and the first, and thus far only, PCA 60th Anniversary Club Coupe (below left). It is #1 of only 60 to be built, the other 59 going to lucky lottery winners. Subtle and elegant in the exclusive “Club Blau” color, it contrasted perfectly with the wild 962 paint and graphics. Further on down the row was a rare treat – HRE wheel company parked a white Carrera GT between an outrageously modified Gemballa Carrera GT and a magnificent black 918 Spyder. Somebody decided that the Carrera GT should be heard as well as seen, so the crowd was mesmerized by the sound AUSPUFF MAY 2O15

of 600 HP via 10 cylinders screaming through the rev range, with instantaneous throttle response and music for the enthusiasts’ ears. Viewing the track at Auto Club Speedway from the elevated infield seats is outstanding. The start-finish straight panorama is excellent, and you are high enough that most of the road course is easily visible. The track tour laps were extremely well organized, with relatively small groups sent onto the track, enabling some fairly good speeds instead of the 20 mph parade that is all too common. No passing, of course, but with a bit of planning and restraint in the beginning, you could put your boot into it and smile the whole day. A couple of our members have participated for the past few years and report great fun and semi-serious speed! Race group qualifying is always good, with each car sounding unique. Someday maybe (but probably not), I will figure out the myriad classes/groups. All I know for sure is that everyone is having fun, some more serious fun than others. Sprint race results are consistent with qualifying. The fast folks are fast, no matter what. After the race, the cars gather as a group in the pits, where the interaction and friendliness among (most of) the drivers is quite refreshing. Congratulations to Zone 8 for organizing another outstanding Festival of Speed. Due to the efforts of many volunteers and participants, we get to enjoy a wonderful weekend of Porsche mania. Thank you! = DE R

The
Getty Villa Tour
STORY BY GREG POSNER EVENT PHOTOS BY BRIAN RUBINO
The Getty Villa in Malibu is the original site of the J. Paul Getty Museum. First opened in 1976, it was modeled after a 2000-yearold Italian Country Villa (Villa dei Papiri). In January of 2006, the Getty Villa reopened after extensive renovation. Now, this amazing location dedicated to the art and culture of classical antiquity is world-renowned. Greg started the tour with a brief introduction on the route that the 32 Porsches participating for this beautiful day would take to this amazing museum. Starting on Cornell Way, passing Paramount Ranch, proceeding East on Mulholland Highway, these roads always make for a fun ride to Topanga Highway, which we eventually followed to Pacific Coast Highway. The cars arrived at Getty Villa just a short distance up PCH for the museum opening. The crowd gathered to obtain information on self-guided tours or assisted tours led by a docent. Exploration began. This site and its Italian architectural layout is modeled
after a first century country Roman home. The many levels offer views and access to a variety of exhibits, making the exploration more exciting. The stunning views to the Pacific Ocean and the beautiful gardens are just added benefits to being surrounded by such unique exhibits. There are over 1200 antiquities in 23 galleries, including monumental sculptures as well as all the other interesting artifacts. The entire collection encompasses more than 44,000 items. The exhibits cover over 7,000 years of ancient art from the Stone Age to the fall of the Roman Empire. Each exhibit has its own interesting theme. The gardens are an important feature of the villa. Bronze sculptures, fountains, lush tree plantings, herbs, as well as flowers, are prominent throughout the grounds. Most of the landscaping materials were also used in Roman times. After roaming the villa at will, at around noon we all gathered at the amphitheater for a group photo taken by Brian Rubino. We all then enjoyed a delicious lunch in the picnic area. The buzz of what we had all experienced was fun to hear. After lunch, Greg recommended several return routes on PCH as a way to continue the enjoyment of the beautiful day. All in all, another successful SBR adventure. If you have not seen The Getty Villa in Malibu, you should definitely schedule a visit. =

The Tech Report
OS DROPOEUditLor N A IS R H BY C Region Tech Santa Barbara
Other features such as active cruise control and lane departure warning systems are becoming commonplace in mainstream vehicles and Porsches alike. Lane change assist (LCA) is available as an option on all four-door Porsches, and it is a feature that even the most stubborn of
Luddites could love. LCA uses rearwardfacing radar sensors on either side of the vehicle to monitor the blind spots. If another car is occupying the space within a sensor’s range, a telltale LED light in the side view mirror illuminates as a warning to the driver. It must be said that if all drivers adjusted their vehicles’ mirrors properly and physically turned their heads to check blind spots before merging or changing lanes, LCA might not be necessary. However, current styling trends and modern rollover safety standards have resulted in vehicles with extremely thick C and D pillars creating large blind spots and poor rearward visibility. Thus, LCA is a nice backup to have. Porsche’s optional Lane Assist system uses a pair of side-mounted cameras to monitor lane markers as the vehicle drives along. If the car begins to drift from its lane, the Lane Assist system is able to intervene and use the electric power steer-
ing rack to return the vehicle to the lane; the steering wheel is also pulsed as a reminder to the driver. This system can be overridden or deactivated completely by the driver. Porsche’s newly available Surround View (again, for four-door models only) combines existing parking assist sensors built into the front and rear bumper covers with four additional cameras to create a virtual “bird’s-eye” view of the car that is visible on the PCM screen. This is designed to assist with parallel parking and other difficult maneuvering situations, and actually works quite well. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC; available on all new Porsches) augments the existing cruise control system with a forwardfacing radar sensor that is visible in the center of the front grille of Porsches thus equipped. The sensor is used to monitor the road ahead, and if the cruise control is activated, it will gently accelerate and/ Continued on page 24

o the casual observer, it seems that every current automotive advertisement is touting some advanced new safety feature that is guaranteed to make driving easier or even save a life! Hyperbole aside, the increasing availability of driver assistance features in new cars is remarkable. Traditionalists may decry the electronic nannies as unnecessary and would point to deteriorating driving standards, smartphones, and other electronic distractions as the culprits in many accidents. In either case, some driver aids such as rearview cameras have been proven to save lives, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has required their fitment to all light passenger vehicles by the 2018 model year.

or apply the brakes as needed to automatically maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, proportional to the current road speed.
If the lead vehicle suddenly slows down, the system is capable of slowing the ACCequipped Porsche to a complete stop if necessary, though Porsche’s literature states that “if heavier braking is required, the driver has to actively intervene.” As such, Porsche’s ACC system is not able to automatically perform emergency stops as do some other manufacturer’s systems, but it will briefly tug on the brakes to jerk the vehicle and alert the driver of a sudden decrease of the gap to a vehicle in front while ACC is activated.
Porsche’s Active Cruise Control on the dash
A new Porsche equipped with all of the above driver aids contains much of the hardware necessary to be converted into a full-fledged, self-driving vehicle. It is well known that Google and others (including Porsche’s sister company, Audi) have developed self-driving cars, and California has begun offering operating permits for their limited use on public roads. In addition to to a battery of sensors and camera equipment to monitor road signs, an autonomous vehicle requires a considerable amount of onboard processing power and sophisticated software to provide it with the “intelligence” to determine how to operate on public roads. It has been proven that automation and artificial intelligence can trump human abilities in controlled, repeatable tasks such as precision welding of automobile chassis or playing chess. The same cannot be said of an AI-driven vehicle that is thrust into the constantly varying landscape of public highways and byways. The latest autonomous vehicles do a fairly remarkable job of safely transporting humans on public roads, but the obvious barriers of potential liability, legal infrastructure, and public skepticism remain. As a purveyor of driver’s cars, Porsche has purposely kept away from the leading edge of the autonomous automobile movement. The company has taken a slightly different tack and developed a prototype Panamera Turbo with its experimental “InnoDrive” technology. The AUSPUFF MAY 2O15
DE R
24
The Porsche Active Cruise Control sensor in the center of the front grille opening InnoDrive Panamera contains virtually all of the hardware and software of a truly autonomous vehicle, but uses these features in an effort to enhance efficiency while involving the human in the driver’s seat. Road scanning technology is combined with stored GPS data of road gradient and curvature to automatically operate the engine, transmission, and braking systems in the most efficient manner possible. The driver is required to steer the vehicle, and electronics do the rest. Porsche claims that the InnoDrive system can safely improve fuel efficiency by 10%. The above may portend a new era of improved road safety and productivity while commuting. Or it might be the beginning of a precipitous slide down the slippery slope towards human subservience to robot overlords. Regardless of the outcome, we should expect to see a steady increase in automotive safety and connectivity technology in the meantime. =

Celebrate The 4th of July The Old-Fashioned Way
With A Parade!

The Last Word
THAT THING CAN FLY! - Frank & Nancee Baldino took their 911 out for a late-April drive through
Paramount Ranch and paused to shoot some photos in front of a very colorful field of yellow. While the countryside provided the perfect backdrop for their beautiful Porsche, they didn’t immediately notice a “visitor” in one of their shots. At far right, observe the crow doing an admiring fly-by of the black Carrera.
