PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA • SANTA BARBARA REGION presents the TIRE RACK Street Survival School For Teenage Drivers at the Camarillo Airport
IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN DRIVING – IT’S ABOUT LIVING! Only Licensed or Permitted drivers AGES 15-21 are eligible to sign up. Register at: www.streetsurvival.org/school-schedule-registration/ The primary emphasis of The Tire Rack Street Survival® program is a “hands-on” driving experience in real world situations. We use your own car to teach you about its handling limits and how you can control them. Students are given two hours of classroom training interspersed with a series of driving exercises with a coach while driving their own car. Students practice various braking and avoidance exercises using a variety of cone configurations, and they practice controlling their cars on a wet skid pad.
SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 2015 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Camarillo Airport Cost: $75 per student (includes lunch)
Challenging courses are created in a controlled area to allow the students to experience abnormal car behavior and then learn the proper way to handle the new situation. This provides the students with useful skills to help avoid accidents and to learn how to keep their cars under control in a skid.
For more information go to: www.streetsurvival.org or call 502-649-4871 PCA/SBR local contacts: Ted Lighthizer tlighthizer@sbcglobal.net Doreen Pankow dpankow@sbcglobal.net
The students will become more observant of the traffic situations they find themselves in. They’ll learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. As the students master the application of physics to drive their cars, they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves.

SATURDAY, JUNE 27, 2015 PCA-SBR
Meeting time is 8:00 a.m. at Rusnak/Westlake Porsche, 3839 Auto Mall Drive, Thousand Oaks, CA 91362, where we’ll be offered complimentary coffee and pastries. Our drive will take us on some roads just made for Porsches. The rally will last somewhat over two hours of fun driving and beautiful scenery. No racing here. Only careful powers of observation and clever thinking will put you in the winners’ circle. The top three teams, as determined by the highest number of correct answers, will be our winners and receive prizes. You will need a driver in a Porsche, a navigator (not in a Lincoln), and a clipboard with pen or pencil. Water, sunglasses, and sunscreen may come in handy, too. The rally will end at Dos Vientos Center in Newbury Park. There, we’ll be treated to a great barbecue lunch from Q-Time BBQ. The total cost is $30 per person, including lunch, drinks, and SBR activity fee. This is always a popular event, so don’t be left out. Please R.S.V.P. by filling out the form below and submitting it with your check.

Celebrate The 4th of July The Old-Fashioned Way
…not by simply watching it from the sidelines but by being a part of it! Our club will slowly cruise down Santa Barbara’s State Street past the large crowd lining the boulevard with our Porsches decorated in 4th of July red, white, and blue finery. (A large part of the fun and camaraderie of this day is actually decorating our cars at the staging area alongside our fellow PCA/SBR members.) Three years ago, the Porsche Club was invited to take part in Santa Barbara’s 50th Annual 4th of July parade. We had such a good time that we decided to make it an annual event. The Porsches were so popular that parade officials moved our Porsches to the front of the parade! Porsche Club members who have participated agree that they had the time of their lives. Cost for this day of fun is practically free – only a $5.00 per person activity fee. Please send your checks, made out to PCA/ SBR, to our parade coordinator, Nadine Tracy, at the address below.
As the parade officials do not decide staging locations until we get closer to the 4th of July, all of you who sign up will receive additional information as soon as it’s transmitted to Nadine. You can plan on meeting mid-morning to line up alongside the parade route. Details of other Santa Barbara 4th of July celebratory events and activities following the parade will be given to you by Nadine as soon as they are made public. Mark your calendars and remember the date – SATURDAY, JULY 4, 2015! Be certain to contact Nadine and sign up early to reserve your spot in the parade. Fill out the form below and mail it with your check today.

Santa Barbara County DRIVE, WINE & DINE Saturday, July 18, 2015 Join us for a scenic and exciting drive over the San Marcos Pass from Santa Barbara through Solvang and Buellton to our ultimate destination, the 1876 stagecoach and train stop of Los Alamos, California. On the way, we’ll visit the Lafond Winery in Buellton. In the past five years, Lafond has won over 20 medals for their extraordinary wines. While there, we’ll enjoy wine tasting paired with delicious appetizers. Members of our club can purchase bottles of wine for 15% off the regular prices. Wine tasting is optional at $10/person.
After the refreshing stop at Lafond, we’ll drive a couple of beautiful twisty roads into Los Alamos and the “Full of Life Flatbreads” restaurant. Since its opening, the restaurant has won many awards for its unique menu, including Santa Barbara’s “Local Heroes” award three times. Their specialty is all-natural, tasty flatbread pizzas and salads. “It’s more than a meal. It’s truly a gastronomic experience.” The flavorful flatbread pizzas are 100% handmade. We’ll enjoy a starter plate and salads and then our flatbread pizzas. With the exception of wine and beer, drinks are included. We will meet at 8:45 a.m. at Santa Barbara Auto Group for a prompt 9:30 a.m. departure. Complimentary coffee and pastries will be available at SBAG. The cost for this fun day of driving and socializing with your Porsche Club friends is only $38.00 per person.
Please complete and mail this form and check payable to PCA/SBR to: Howard Rubenstein, PO Box 4855, Thousand Oaks, CA 91359. No refunds after July 8th.

The President’s Column MIKE HODSON
There’s No Place Like Home
T
hanks to the miracle of modern technology, I am writing this column during our road trip through the Southwestern U.S. My entire music library and hours of Podcasts help to pass the driving time. Thus far, our truck and tent trailer have carried us over 2,500 miles with another 1,000 to go. The journey has been filled with contrasts. Leaving Southern California, we crossed the sprawl of Los Angeles with its seemingly endless suburbia; then all of a sudden, barren desert stretches to the horizon. At regular intervals, businesses appear, some only catering to the traveler, with others carving out a local niche. Small towns thrive or suffer for many reasons. Shattered dreams litter the landscape with failed enterprises, abandoned dwellings, and junked vehicles of all vintages and varieties. Sometimes if you build it, they WON’T come, despite the best intentions and lots of hard work. Our itinerary is twofold -- to see as much natural beauty as possible, plus visit aviation museums. Talk about contrast! National Parks and National Monuments are high on the priority list as we travel along. Hidden gems abound, discovered via the fabulous internet or, even better, from fellow travelers. Thankfully, our forefathers and foremothers had the vision and wisdom to designate and preserve these areas for future generations to enjoy. It is easy to cover hundreds of miles in a day. I marvel at the engineering and construction expertise required to build the roads and highways we use. Through the desert in searing heat or over huge mountain ranges, bridges spanning valleys, twisting and curving paths climbing steep passes -- thank you to

everyone who planned and worked so hard to ease my journey. Imagining travel in the pioneer days is almost impossible. Crossing even short sections of the West via covered wagon had to be extraordinarily tough. Every stream, every hill, every forest was a huge challenge. The fortitude required was immense, the potential for suffering also immense. Strong folks with strong character and strong motives hopefully set out for better lives. Almost every day is a new highlight, made extra special due to uniqueness and/or eye-popping color. Myriad photos only serve to preserve the memory, seldom doing justice to the experience. Describing Arches National Park in words and pictures cannot begin to capture the scale or grandeur of the park. Driving through Monument Valley is quite humbling, as you realize that the most wonderful human creation cannot hold a candle to the beauty of nature. Of course, there have been rough spots in the road, both literal and figurative. 24/7 togetherness can be interesting, especially since my mind-reading skills are somewhat lacking. A trailer tire blowout on a deserted road is a good teamwork test. Fortunately, we passed. Don’t sweat the small stuff, and it doesn’t matter who’s right. Maintaining a sense of humor is paramount. Laugh at yourself, and the world laughs with you. With all the wonderful sights we have seen, the friendly people we have met, and the wonderful memories we are creating, the longing for home is very strong. Our home in Camarillo is where we raised our children. Every room is filled with family history. Son Chris anxiously awaits our return so he can get back into the routine that he so enjoys. Felines Henry and Porsche get good care during our trip but will suitably scold us when we return. Pulling into the driveway makes us appreciate what we often take for granted, truly all the comforts and convenience of home. It is true, there is no place like home. Thank you, Pamuela, for making it so warm and wonderful.

Weather Puts A Damper On Autocross STORY BY STEVE FERRARI EVENT PHOTOS BY JOHN ALFENITO
O
n April 25, 2015, the Santa Barbara Region held its first Autocross in more than a year and a half. Judging by the attendance, it’s obvious that both members and non-members would like the club to continue holding autocrosses. We had 67 drivers registered, and 61 actually attended. Maybe the six who didn’t show up knew something I didn’t. But I’ll get to that shortly. These 61 drivers drove 37 varieties of Porsches. We had a very quick course, which averaged about one minute to complete. We were able to get in four practice runs before we enjoyed lunch from Q-Time Barbeque. Aaron Johnson always makes sure there is enough food for all.
out Martin, this event would not have happened. Ted Lighthizer, the immediate past chair, guided me on where the various equipment and supplies were and shared his knowledge and insight on many aspects of what it takes to have a successful autocross. I appreciate Jeffrey Merrick and Jeff Parker for meeting with me a few times to test and run the timing equipment. Their commitment to the club is tremendous. Doreen Pankow, immediate past president, offered her knowledge and attention to detail and was very helpful to me. My appreciation also goes to Chris Andropoulos and Cristopher Arreola for running the Tech Inspection. Last but not least, thank you to my co-chair, Brian Rubino, and his wife, Linda. Brian helped with planning logistics, ran the grid and worked with the drivers to get them to the starting line. I appreciated Linda helping out as needed during the day.
As lunch ended, the winds picked up, the fog rolled in, and the rains came. Due to rain, poor visibility, and a very wet course, it was decided to cancel the remaining practice run and timed runs. It was a bit disappointing, but I think most everyone agreed with the decision. All the cones were picked up in record time with all the drivers helping out.
I received numerous emails from drivers expressing appreciation to the Santa Barbara Region for hosting the event and also to all the volunteers who made the day happen. As a result of having to cancel the event, the SBR Board of Directors decided to grant a partial fee refund to those participants requesting one.
The event drew more than six drivers who had never experienced an autocross before. We had enough instructors to teach the new participants how to drive the course and coach them on some aspects of performance driving. I received many emails from these drivers expressing enjoyment with their experience and appreciation for their respective instructors.
When I assumed the chairmanship of the autocross, I truly believed that the event was really all about the cars. After planning, organizing and running the event and then having received so many encouraging emails after it occurred, I have experienced and truly understand the meaning of PCA’s unofficial mantra: “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.”
Thank you to all those who served as coaches. I also wish to thank all of the club members who volunteered for the day. There were about 20 volunteers at various times during the event. I have to single out a few people who contributed to the transition of my first autocross chairmanship. First, a big thank-you to Martin Keller, who chaired the autocross for many years. With-
Thank you again to all volunteers and drivers who made this day possible and provided support to all of us. I look forward to our next autocross in the Fall, date to be announced. =

The Tech Report
Porsche 918 Spyder
Body Construction BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor
Current and future fuel economy standards are increasingly driving automakers towards the use of lightweight construction techniques in everyday, massproduced automobiles, with Ford’s new aluminum-intensive F-150 pickup truck serving as a lightning rod for this trend. Porsche is no stranger to the use of exotic, lightweight materials in its race cars and high-end supercars, but such construction is steadily finding its way into Porsche’s “normal” model lineup.
To fully understand modern chassis construction, it is instructive to examine the most basic type of automotive chassis, which is the ladder frame. As its name implies, a ladder frame consists of two main longitudinal members, which are joined by a number of lateral cross-members. The engine and drivetrain are bolted to the frame, as is the front and rear suspension. The passenger cabin and body panels are completely separate and are bolted to the frame. This arrangement is often referred to as “body-on-frame” construction. It was the most popular type of construction in the early days of the automobile and was typically used by American manufacturers for larger passenger cars and muscle cars well into the 1970s.
detrimental to ride and handling quality because the twisting of the frame causes the suspension mounting points to move as the vehicle traverses dips and bumps in the road, and stiffer springs and dampers (shock absorbers) are needed to compensate. Ladder frames also need to be relatively bulky and heavy to provide strength.
Ladder-type frames are used in large trucks and SUVs to this day because they allow for high towing and payload capacities. The downside of ladder frames is that they are not as strong when subjected to torsional (twisting) loads. This is
All Porsche road cars since the 356 have utilized this type of construction, and it allows for a lighter and much more rigid chassis than does a ladder frame. This yields better ride and handling character-
The vast majority of passenger cars employ unit-body (or unibody) construction, in which the frame and body are one. Unibody construction is best described as a three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle of subassemblies that are welded, bonded, or bolted together to form an integral frame to which the doors, fenders, and lids are attached.

n today’s automotive landscape, much attention is given to high-tech power plants and electronic gadgets and safety features, often without much regard for the “bones” of the automobile in question. As with high-tech electronics, body and chassis technology has benefited from continuous development over many decades in response to crash safety standards and customer demand for performance and ride comfort.

istics, as well as increased crash protection for passengers as a rigid passenger cell can be maintained, with front and rear crumple zones providing impact protection. Unibody construction is also conducive to mass production as the various sections of the chassis can be precision-welded by robots in minutes; skilled craftsmen can also effectively perform unibody repairs with the proper equipment.
a four-point service hoist, the doors are extremely difficult to open and close due to the chassis twist induced via lift points. While driving, this manifests itself as “cowl shake” that can be felt when driving on rough roads. As time has passed, higher-grade steel alloys have become available, and construction techniques have improved. The 986 Boxster was the first Porsche to employ thoroughly modern chassis composition of several grades of high-strength steel. Originally conceived as a convert-
sign. The exceptionally strong windshield frames and rollover hoops of each held up with no visible deflection! Ingot-like chassis rigidity is fantastic for handling and safety, but the downside of modern chassis construction is that it makes for heavy automobiles with very thick roof pillars. The main issue is cost. Exotic materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber have been used in race car and aircraft construction for decades, but their cost is prohibitive in terms of massproduction automobiles. Even high-end
2005 Porsche Boxster 986 The Porsche 356 and early 911 employed similar unibody construction from automotive-grade steel. Chassis rigidity was exceptional for the time, but their unibodies are considered to be relatively flimsy by modern standards. Along with their small size and lack of modern amenities, this goes a long way towards explaining the coveted low weight of these chassis! The flexible nature of early Porsche chassis becomes apparent when the roof is “chopped off” for convertible and Targa versions. The Porsche service technician is reminded of this daily. When an early open-topped Porsche is lifted on AUSPUFF JUNE 2O15

ible, the 986 chassis lacks the integral roof structure that provides much torsional rigidity to hardtop designs. When the roof is missing, automotive engineers attempt to compensate by reinforcing the floor and sill areas of the chassis, as shown in the 986/987 chassis diagram above. This complicates the production process and adds cost but pays dividends in handling, ride quality, and occupant safety.
vehicles like Porsche 911s have their limits.
Your humble scribe has been the unfortunate witness of several Boxster rollovers at a race track setting. In each case, the driver walked away unscathed, thanks to the integrity of the Porsche chassis de-
Aluminum has long been used in auto racing and aerospace applications due to its favorable strength-to-weight ratio versus steel, along with its exceptional corrosion resistance. However, despite
Nonetheless, economies of scale have increased the availability of sophisticated high-strength steel alloys, and these are used in key areas of the pictured Porsche chassis. When high-strength steel is used, less material is necessary to achieve desired component rigidity, which decreases its weight.
aluminum being the most abundant metallic element on Earth, the cost of its extraction and conversion into a suitable alloy for automotive construction makes it more expensive than steel (which itself is an alloy composed of iron and carbon). Also, aluminum is softer and much less likely to retain its original shape than steel in the event of an impact, which makes it more difficult and costly to repair. Similarly to high-strength steel alloys, aluminum alloys have become more commonplace in mass-produced automobiles thanks to modern construction techniques. As shown, the Porsche Panamera (along with the Cayenne and 981/991) uses aluminum in as many areas as possible to save weight, with high-strength steel used in critical areas. Magnesium is used for extreme weight savings in noncritical areas such as radiator and dashboard support. Besides cost and complication, the main challenge to joining such dissimilar metals is the potential for electrolysis. Also known as galvanic corrosion, this process can occur when metals with different electrical potential are joined together in the presence of moisture, salt, or another conductive medium, which causes one or both of the metals to corrode as molecules from the “weaker” metal migrate to the other. (This process also generates electrical voltage, and is how a battery works.) Utmost care must be taken to isolate the different metals, which Porsche achieves though various high-tech welding and adhesive techniques.
Porsche Panamera strength-to-weight ratio that is far beyond that of most alloys. It is composed of sheets of woven strands of carbon that are impregnated with epoxy and cured in a mold inside a special oven while under pressure. The end result is an extremely strong and lightweight panel that is suitable for structural use. The Porsche Carrera GT supercar of the last decade featured a carbon fiber “tub” with integral passenger cell as the central chassis element. A separate carbon fiber sub-frame housed the engine and transmission. Deformable steel and aluminum crash structures front and rear provided energy-absorbing crumple zones in the event of an impact. The current 918 Spyder uses a refined version of the same construction, as do its rival hybrid hypercars from Ferrari and McLaren.
have become very heavy of late!). BMW also plans to make its carbon fiber available to other entities to spread cost. Meanwhile, Lamborghini has patented a process in which scrap carbon fiber is reprocessed to inexpensively form lightweight but noncritical structures that might otherwise be made of steel. Finally, Alfa Romeo recently introduced the 4C sports car, which is the first “affordable” production car with a carbon fiber tub. All of this bodes well for the future. Hopefully, the proliferation of lightweight materials will allow Porsche to return to its roots and produce a relatively affordable lightweight sports car, to the delight of purists everywhere. =
Unsurprisingly, the main barrier to the widespread use of carbon fiber is cost. The process of manufacturing the carbon strands that comprise carbon fiber weave is very energy-intensive, and the final manufacturing process of molded carbon fiber parts is laborious and not suitable for mass production.
Carbon fiber is perhaps the most promising automotive construction material to date. It has been used in race car and aerospace construction since the 1980s, and its use has been slowly precipitating into high-end exotic street cars ever since. Carbon fiber has an exceptional
Thankfully, the cost of carbon fiber production has slowly decreased as demand has increased. Rival automaker BMW has invested a large amount of capital in a vertically integrated carbon fiber production process. The BMW i3 and i8 both utilize carbon fiber chassis, and the automaker plans to incorporate composite construction into its mainstream models (which

STORY BY MIKE HODSON
W
e in the Santa Barbara Region of PCA are very proud to have chosen Tri-Counties Make-A-Wish Foundation (TCMAWF) as our designated charity for calendar year 2015. Selecting a charity from the many deserving and worthwhile charity organizations in our Region is not an easy task. PCASB Board members consider three primary factors in the charity selection process. First, we desire that our contributions be distributed to those in need within our Region’s geographic area of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. TCMAWF distributes all their funds in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties. Second, the charity must have a very low percentage of their budget being used for administrative and overhead purposes. TCMAWF has an annual budget of approximately $1 mil-
My first introduction to the MAWF was when son Chris and I attended a Dodger game several years ago. A very good friend and PCASB member had given the tickets to us. Chris, being the huge Dodger fan, was extremely excited to be attending the game. Between innings, a video presentation was made chronicling the experience of a “Wish Kid” who wanted to be a Dodger for a day. As I sat there with Chris, it struck me how magical his experience was in attending the game. Imagining any kid being a Dodger for a day made me appreciate and admire the MAWF. At this time, we are asking our members to donate airlines miles to TCMAWF. Many of the wishes granted by TCMAWF involve airline travel for not only the Wish Kid but for family members as well. Anyone who travels via airlines these days realizes that airline tickets are expensive and can be a significant per-

Ninety percent (90%) is used to grant wishes. Third, we want to have the opportunity to be involved with the charity and their activities. Donating a nice dollar amount is fine; however, our preference is to interact with the charity in more of a partner relationship. This may include becoming involved with charity events, inviting charity personnel and their benefactors to our events, and so on. For those who are not aware of the TCMAWF, it is the local chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. As of 2015, TCMAWF is proudly celebrating 35 years of wish granting. TCMAWF selects young people from 2-17 years of age with life threatening diseases and grants the wish of the young person. In 2014, TCMAWF granted 88 wishes, everything from Disney World trips to celebrity meet-and-greet experiences.

centage of a trip’s expenditures. Your donations are appreciated and are very cost effective. In addition to airline mile contributions, PCASB is planning two opportunities for direct fundraising for TCMAWF. First will be our annual Concours de Elegance, sponsored by Rusnak Westlake Porsche. We will be having a silent auction at the Concours, with the proceeds directly benefitting TCMAWF. Additionally, our annual holiday party will feature a raffle and silent auction, again with the proceeds going to TCMAWF. We are also working with TCMAWF to have PCASB members volunteer at their events to make the charity experience more meaningful. Thanks to those members who have already donated miles. We look forward to our continued mutually beneficial relationship with TCMAWF. =
