ecently I had the privilege and honor to ride in a 1957 Porsche Speedster. Originally conceived as a “basic, low cost” version of the 356, today the Speedster is universally revered and coveted. Carefully climbing into the machine, the appeal was quickly apparent. The seats are perfectly shaped, with not an ounce of extra padding. The controls are perfectly sized to each task, with no markings. There is not one thing in or on the car that doesn’t absolutely have to be there. Porsche made the Speedster better by subtracting, not adding.

MIKE HODSON

Enjoyment in our daily lives is often the result of less, not more. Walking on the beach at sunset with few, if any, souls in sight, the only sounds to be heard are quiet conversation and the waves breaking onto the shore. The sun slowly disappears under the horizon, as the colors in the sky constantly change. Such serene beauty is a welcome contrast to hectic schedules. The glow of contentment is deep; no need for a fancy meal, exotic location, or artificial entertainment. In our automotive avocation, the simple pleasures are often the most rewarding. To execute a perfect shift or nail a corner is greatly satisfying. Having all the modern electronic wizardry is wonderful to save your bacon during a hairball situation, but not needing the help is better. Rare is the time when everything about a drive is perfect (it has never happened to me!). However, the bits that are bring a smile to my face. After the car is back

in the garage, I reflect on the experience, savor the good times, and hopefully learn from the not-so-good. My flying hobby is much the same. Frequent practice results in potential incremental improvements in skill levels; however, sometimes progress just doesn’t happen. A friend owns a small jet aircraft, which I have flown in several times. Incredibly sophisticated and hugely capable, the aircraft practically flies itself. Going from Point A to Point B is a real treat, safe, fast, and comfortable. Plus my friend is paying the bills! Such huge refinement makes for a giant gap between pilot and machine. In dicey weather or at 41,000 feet where the outside air temperature is 40 degrees below zero, the automation and redundancy are welcome. Still, getting into a 70-year-old Piper Cub, with no electrical system and only 65 HP is more fun. Flying the Cub is not about going somewhere, it is about savoring the experience of low and slow. Cruising above the orchards in Ventura County at 1,500 feet, you can smell the orange blossoms in the spring. Details on the ground are clear and sharp, truly a bird’s-eye view. Every landing is an adventure where, much like an early 911, the Cub is prone to swapping ends rather suddenly. A few friends started Thursday Night Therapy several years ago. We found that the concentration required for flying was great relaxation from our over-stressed jobs. 45 minutes in the air cured whatever was ailing us, we returned to the ground mentally refreshed. I love and appreciate the convenience and technology that is available to me today, despite the numerous dark sides of that convenience. However, it is the simple pleasures in life, shared with those near and dear to us, that mean the most. Take the time to smell the roses and enjoy the simple treats of life. The scent is intoxicating!

From The Editor’s Desk

E

arlier this year when PCNA announced they would build a special “60th Anniversary GTS Club Coupe” saluting the 60th year of the Porsche Club of America, I was intrigued. I became extremely interested when I read Porsche would only build 60 of these cars to be sold exclusively to PCA mem- JOHN ALFENITO bers. I entered my name in the “lottery” to qualify to purchase one of the 60 Club Coupes. I wasn’t really in the market for a new Porsche; besides, what were the odds that my name would get selected? Well, my name was selected and I jumped at the chance to purchase this special edition car. Having been a serial owner of black/silver Porsches, the GTS Club Coupe’s somewhat louder “Club Blau” paint scheme was going to be a big switch for me, but I was eager to make the change. So eager, that I quickly sold my 2011 Carrera GTS to help finance the new purchase. Then came the (relatively) bad news: the 59 Club Coupes (CC #1 has already been built) were to be constructed 15 at a time in AUSPUFF AUGUST 2O15

the months of July, August, September, and October. My allotted build date would be September, making a delivery in November the most likely scenario. Patience, Grasshopper.

So, while I wait, I must be satisfied with this 1:43 scale model from PCA until the real deal comes along. If I could shrink myself like “Ant Man,” I could hop in this little beauty and drive it to breakfast.

Der Auspuff Wins PCA’s National Newsletter Competition STORY BY JOHN ALFENITO, PHOTO BY PAM ALFENITO

W

ednesday night, June 24, 2015, a post popped up on my Facebook page saying, “Congratulations, John Alfenito…you’ll find out why.” This cryptic message came from my friend (and former Zone 8 Rep) Michael Dolphin, who was at the Porsche Parade in French Lick, Indiana. What I didn’t realize at the time, Michael was posting from that evening’s awards banquet as the National Newsletter Contest results were being announced. Moments later, I received a message from PCA National Newsletter Coordinator Wendy Shoffitt telling me Der Auspuff had won the Betty Jo Turner Award for Newsletter Excellence. Der Auspuff was judged to be the best newsletter in all of PCA for 2015!

I have served as a judge in the National Newsletter Contest for the past few years. All the judges are current editors, and we do not judge our own class. In the process of evaluating other regions’ magazines, I’ve seen some outstanding work, especially from the larger regions in Class V. When you consider that some Class V regions have three times the membership of SBR and that the national winner has come from Class V for several years in a row, it makes our win even more impressive. While I often get the lion’s share of credit for Der Auspuff, there are several other folks who contribute greatly to our magazine’s success. Let me especially thank Susan Stone, who as

Happy Der Auspuff staffers with the PCA Betty Jo Turner Award for Newsletter Excellence. (L-R) Managing Editor Susan Stone, Associate Editor Birgitta Baker, Editor John Alfenito, and Associate Editor Jeanne McNair. I was stunned. I was thrilled. But mostly, I was stunned. To backtrack a little…each year, PCA encourages all regions to submit their newsletters for judging in the national competition. The regions are separated into five classes, according to region membership size. SBR competes in Class IV (membership up to 1000), where we have done quite well in the past. SBR was #1 in Class IV last year (Mike Pomerantz, Editor), third place in 2013, and first place in 2012. But it had been 10 years since our region had taken the top national prize. Impressively in 2003, Der Auspuff editors Sherry & Stephen Schafer started SBR on an unprecedented run of three straight Heinmiller Awards (as the top prize was called until 2012). In 2004 and again in 2005, editor Nicolas Liakas also captured the Heinmiller Award. No other region has ever won it three years in a row.

Managing Editor, does more than any other individual to make sure Der Auspuff is clear and correct each month. Birgitta Baker and Jeanne McNair help with proofing and identification. Contributors like Chris Andropoulos, Nick Liakas, Sue Kinsling, Ted Lighthizer, Howard Rubenstein, Doreen Pankow, and the incomparable Ron Williams all add immense value to each issue. So, congratulations to us all…not just those involved in the creation of Der Auspuff, but kudos to our entire region. It’s the busy schedule of diverse events and activities that makes SBR so vital and interesting. With material like that, how could we not have a world-class publication (if I do say so myself)? Thanks to everyone for their best wishes and kind compliments. It’s a pleasure serving as your editor. I’d like to try for back-to-back Betty Jo Turner awards with another win next year! =

The R.U.F. Report

R.U.F. Travels The Oil Trail STORY BY JEANNE MCNAIR & NICOLAS LIAKAS EVENT PHOTOS BY NICOLAS LIAKAS

T

hirteen “retired and unemployed folks” (R.U.F.) met in Ventura on June 23rd for our monthly event, which was dubbed the “Oil Trail” by organizer Nicolas Liakas. The aforementioned “oil” connected each of the venues in some manner, as we were to learn at each of our three stops in Ojai and Santa Paula. We drove up to the beautiful Ojai Valley on a bright, sunny day to our first stop, the charming Ojai Valley Museum. Located in downtown Ojai, the museum is housed in the former St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel, which dates back to 1919. We entered through a lovely courtyard with many trees, including citrus and fig, and an array of eye-catching statuary. One particularly compelling piece was a bigger-than-life brown bear at rest. The museum has galleries for the permanent collection as well as for traveling exhibits. We were fortunate to be able to see many art pieces in different media in the temporary exhibit, all of which were done by Ojai artists. This is an annual exhibit each spring. The permanent collection is very well presented and has exhibits showing the many historical periods in the history of the Ojai Valley. The Chumash section included a very dramatic, enormous, Ushaped boulder, which has been documented as a birthing chair. We learned that the name Ojai derives from the Chumash word “Awhai,” meaning moon. The modern spelling is believed to have evolved from the Mexican interpretation of the sound of the Chumash word.

Our group of R.U.F.-ians paused for a photo outside the Ojai Valley Museum.

Other sections in the permanent exhibit document the Mission and Rancho periods and the discovery of oil in the valley by George Gilbert as well as the rich strike of Thomas Bard. Besides the interesting historical background, this exhibit presented the first part of the “oil trail.” From the museum, we traveled through town to the east end of Ojai to the Ojai Olive Oil Company, which is situated on 38 acres of olive groves. This “oil” connection was obvious to us all. This local company produces high quality, certified organic olive oil from eight varieties of olives, mild to peppery in taste. We learned that the Spanish padres introduced olive trees to California in the 1800’s and that they made oil for religious and medicinal purposes.

Ojai Olive Oil Company owner Alice Asquith (third from right) talks about the cultivation of and caring for the olive trees. AUSPUFF AUGUST 2O15

Our guide stressed that olives are a fruit and that there is the same correlation between olives and the oil as there is between grapes and wine when it comes to quality. Cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil is the highest quality oil to be had. This is obtained through the first and only press of the olives. The pressing process appears surprisingly simple. All of the equipment is located in a relatively small space adja-

cent to the tasting room. We learned that 60 pounds of ripe olives yield one gallon of the golden oil. We were given a short tour of the orchard and saw the small, green olives, which should be ready for harvest in November. They are all hand picked. The trees are very long-lived and have been known to produce for a thousand years. After a picnic lunch in the orchard, we headed for our last stop on the oil trail, the Santa Paula Oil Museum -- no explanation needed! The California Oil Museum in Santa Paula traces the history of the oil industry in California, emphasizing the role played by four start-up and struggling companies that in the late 1880s merged to create the Union Oil Company. It employs hands-on, interactive exhibits, videos, working models, photographs and memorabilia as educational tools. A building to its north houses a working replica of a 1900s oil rig. New exhibits are displayed several times each year. During our visit, we were treated to a collection of motorcycles built by a long-ago forgotten manufacturer, Norton. We then took the 28 steps to the second floor that contains the restored offices of the Union Oil Company. Many of the items on display brought back memories from our youth -- for those of us who still have a sense of memory! Of special note were the volumes of hand-written business ledgers and correspondence that were drafted by calligraphers. The handwriting was exquisite, a talent that no longer exists except in the hands of a few.

Barry Cooper, our docent, gave an exemplary tour and led a great discussion on the architecture and interior design elements of the historic building. This historic landmark building is still owned by the oil company, and it is leased to the museum organization for an annual rent of $1.00! It is a “must” destination for all. =

THE GIMMICK RALLY

STORY BY JERRY LASNIK

O

EVENT PHOTOS BY DICK LANGE

n Saturday, June 27, eager Gimmick Rally folks started the day at Rusnak Porsche in Westlake Village where we were all treated to a fine Corner Bakery breakfast, graciously hosted by our sponsor, Rusnak. The participants came from far and wide for a day of fun, mystery and exciting new territory to drive their beloved Porsches. One couple from the San Gabriel area and another couple from Redondo Beach (L.A. Region) joined us.

not a giveaway -- not that we didn’t throw in some no-brainers like “Rooty-Tooty-Fresh-and-Fruity.” No one admitted to missing IHOP for this one. Another was “Can you hear me now?” an obvious Verizon clue. But they also had to know about famous notables and their cars, such as President Taft with two Pierce Arrows or Al Capone with his Duesenberg. We included the “Grated After School Fun” (Boys & Girls Club) and the R-rated “Phallic” (Dick’s Sporting Goods.)

Two new-member couples picked the Gimmick Rally as their first foray into club adventures and were not disappointed. Alan and Rose Jeffrey, with a 2013 911 coupe, joined SBR in March; and Ted and Roanna Prell joined in June. The Prells tried to trick us with a tale that their Prius, with 911T markings on the back window, was really a 1971 911T (which we discovered was actually in the shop for repair!) At the end, Ted falsely claimed that he got all of the clues correct! These are newbies to keep an eye on.

The participants had to have knowledge on the following subjects: Geography -- “Island in the Southern Aegean Sea” (Via Santorini) Biology -- “Silent flying rodent killers” (Hooters) History -- “Invention of phonograph” (Edison Drive) Literature -- “In Cold Blood” (Via Capote) Culture -- “Bangers & mash” (Brendan’s Irish Pub)

There was a brief pep talk by Pam and me explaining to the ralliers what the event was and what it wasn’t. “It’s not a race. Watch out for nasty people honking at slow Porsche drivers. No Googling clues on the way! No turning back.”

But this bunch of Gimmickers was also a tough crowd. When we got to the clue, “May use the hyperbaric chamber,”the “right” answer was “Wound Healing Center.” Hands shot up, telling us that the sign for Los Robles Medical Center was nearby. On the “That’s the Pits” clue, the “correct” answer was “Peach Hill Rd.,” or so we thought. But the next street was Olive Road. We had to admit that they were both good alternate answers.

Pam and I then went to the final stop and could already smell the great food being prepared on the barbeque by QTime BBQ company. We covered the picnic tables, and then we waited nearly two agonizing hours until the first cars came into Dos Vientos Park. After a bit of schmoozing and clue-lamenting, a delicious lunch was served. This is a really clever, intelligent group of fun-loving Porsche people, so it was essential that the clues were challenging and

Lots of high scores were earned, but the three top finishers won gift certificates to the Goodie Store. $75 went to Gil & Josh Siqueido, $50 to Joe & Jane Niederst, and $25 for Mike & Laura Whittington. Just another day with nice people, great weather, fine food and, of course, driving a Porsche. =

City of Santa Barbara 4th of July Parade STORY BY NADINE TRACY EVENT PHOTOS BY RON WILLIAMS

E

veryone loves a parade! That fact was especially evident from the happy crowd at the Santa Barbara 4th of July Parade as they cheered, waved, and whistled while our festively decorated Porsches passed by.

The one-mile parade route seemed short, but it was packed with holiday well-wishers as our 19 Porsches and 46 members slowly meandered, snake-like, down the parade route. We returned the crowd’s enthusiasm with waves, honks, and revving of engines. At intervals down State Street, parade officials on speakers identified the Porsche Club, Santa Barbara Region, explained our community involvement, and issued an invitation to all Porsche owners to join our club. Thank you to Ron Williams for the always-fantastic photos of the event; to Walt Branscome from Santa Barbara Auto Group, who provided a new Cayenne to escort our Make-aWish family through the parade (see page 32); and to Tristin Tracy for helping me carry our group’s banner. Also, special kudos are due to all the members who participated and made this another fun, successful Porsche event. See you all next year on the 4th! =

The Tech Report

Porsche Takes Le Mans 2015 BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor

L

ast July, this space featured Porsche’s 919 Hybrid race car, which was built with the goal of returning Porsche to the upper echelon of international endurance racing after a long absence. As it turned out, success at Le Mans 2014 eluded Porsche, with teething issues keeping both of the 919s in the garage for long periods during the race. The #20 919 was leading the race with less than four hours remaining, but it soon retired with hybrid powertrain issues, while its sister #14 car ended up in 11th place (Porsche’s sister company Audi claimed its 13th overall Le Mans victory). However, Porsche ended the 2014 season on a high note, winning the final round of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) series at Interlagos in Sao Paulo, Brazil. For the 2015 WEC season, Porsche introduced an improved version of the 919. While it looks very similar to last year’s car and the basic powertrain layout and function are unchanged, Porsche claims that the 2015 919 is 85-90% new. The chassis is lighter, as it is now manufactured as a single carbon fiber unit. The turbocharged, 2.0-liter V4 engine has been lightened and strengthened. The bodywork has many detail improvements in the pursuit of improved aerodynamic efficiency. The hybrid system layout and function are the same as last year’s car, but Porsche decided to step up to the maximum amount of electrical energy allowed by the WEC for 2015. As mentioned in last year’s 919 article, the WEC rule makers completely reAUSPUFF AUGUST 2O15

vamped the LMP1 class rules for 2014 with the laudable goal of reducing in-race fuel consumption by 30% while maintaining similar performance. The idea was to encourage automakers to implement hybrid technologies into LMP1 race cars, the development of which could eventually translate into more efficient and more cost-effective hybrid road cars. To this end, the FIA rule makers concocted a series of arcane formulas that extrapolate the performance of a typical LMP1 car and a complementary formula that attempts to provide equivalency between gasoline engines, diesel engines, and various hybrid electric drives in terms of power output and fuel efficiency. These formulae are best deciphered by engineering majors and impossible to fully describe in this space. But, the important aspect of the current rulebook to know is that manufacturers of LMP1 cars can choose to enter a nonhybrid, gasoline or diesel-engined car or a hybrid-electric car. Hybrids are subdivided into four categories, depending on how much electrical energy is allowed to be released per 8.5-mile lap of the Le Mans circuit to “boost” its straight-line speed. Last year’s Porsche 919 Hybrid had a 6MJ hybrid system, which meant that it was allowed to expend six megajoules of electric power per lap to supplement its internal combustion engine. (A joule is a unit of energy, and one million joules=1MJ; for those who have read their electricity bill, 1 kilowatt-hour=3.6 MJ.)

For 2015, Porsche stepped up to the maximum 8MJ system, while Audi moved from 2MJ to 4MJ, and Toyota stayed at 6MJ. The disadvantage of employing the maximum amount of energy allowed per lap is that said energy must be generated and stored (possibly requiring heavier hybrid components), and less fuel is allowed to be used. As with street hybrid systems, LMP1 hybrid race cars use the kinetic energy generated while braking to recharge the hybrid energy storage system. In the case of the Porsche 919, this is a lithiumion battery pack. The rival Audi R18 uses a mechanical flywheel, while the Toyota TS040 relies on a supercapacitor. As mentioned in the July 2014 tech section, the Porsche 919 also recovers exhaust heat energy from its turbocharged engine, as does the turbodiesel Audi R18. Porsche took a risk for 2015 and redesigned its hybrid system to the 8MJ specification, knowing that there could be situations in which its cars might not be able to generate enough energy to provide its electric motors with maximum charge (caution laps, slow laps while stuck behind slower cars, etc.). Also, Porsche knew it would be at a disadvantage at most of the shorter tracks in the WEC series; nonetheless, the prospect of a 17th overall victory at Le Mans made the situation much more palatable. In any case, with full gasoline and electric power combined, the 2015 919 Hybrid makes well over 1,000 horsepower! Porsche started the 2015 WEC season strong, with the improved 919 being the fastest car on the grid in terms of

In preparation for Le Mans, Porsche entered a 3rd 919 car in the next race, the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. Again, Porsche aced the qualifying session with an impressive 1-2-3 result but had to settle for the bridesmaid position in the race once more, with the #18 car again finishing arrears of an Audi. The remaining 919s finished 3rd and 6th, respectively. Overall, it was clear that the 2015 919 was massively quick in a straight line, but its long-term durability and the viability of its 8MJ hybrid system remained questions while going into June’s 24 Hours of Le Mans showdown. Nonetheless, Porsche again showed its impressive pace by trouncing the Audis and Toyotas in qualifying with another 1-2-3 performance. The Porsches and Audis maintained a close battle throughout much of the first half of the 24-hour race, with the lead consistently swapping back and forth as each lead car came in for routine pit stops (un-

like last year, the Toyotas were well off the pace). Despite the newfound efficiency of the hybrid LMP1 cars, they still needed to make a pit stop for fuel every 13-14 laps of the 8.5-mile circuit, with tires also being replaced every 3-4 stops. As proof that endurance racing is a team effort, Porsche’s pit crew consistently performed faster pit stops and driver changes (each car had 3 drivers) than did the seasoned Audi crew, and it made a difference as Porsche had the net lead for much of the race. An overnight penalty for the lead #17 Porsche (at the time driven by former Formula One ace Mark Webber) meant that the fastest Audi grabbed the overall lead and was able to hold it through much of the third quarter of the race. However, all three Audi cars had problems late in the race, with massive engine compartment heat causing issues with warping and melting body panels. Several unscheduled pit stops were required for repair, and the #19 Porsche regained the lead, which it held until the end of the race with the #17 car finishing second. Ironically, the winning #19 car was the extra 919 that will not be contesting the full WEC season. In fact, Porsche “borrowed” active German Formula One driver Nico Hulkenberg as part of the effort! Sadly, Porsche’s factory 991-based GTclass cars did not fare well at Le Mans 2015 with two of the cars suffering early engine

failures, while the third car languished in the pit garage for lengthy repairs to its drivetrain and suspension, eventually finishing fifth in class. In the end, overall victory in Le Mans was the main goal, and Porsche achieved it in convincing fashion. Seventeen years between victories was a long drought, and in the interim, some questioned Porsche’s motives in sacrificing top-level endurance racing to branch out and build SUVs and four-door sedans. However, the profits generated by these mainstream models endowed Porsche with the capital necessary to invest in today’s expensive and high-tech LMP1 landscape. Hopefully, the next generation of Porsche street machines will be enhanced by technology gleaned from these efforts. And perhaps Porsche’s next generation of productionbased GT race cars will get a boost as well!

sheer pace. The two factory-entered 919s qualified 1-2 for the season’s first event, a 6-hour race at Silverstone, England. Alas, one-lap pace does not always equate to a race win, as the #18 car finished second to one of the Audis, albeit by only 4.6 seconds. (For a taste of the awesome battle that raged all race long, search YouTube for “Porsche vs Audi Silverstone 2015.) Sadly, the sister #17 car dropped out of the race early due to a gearbox issue.

Lynn Kuchera, 1941-2015 TRIBUTE BY BURT MISEVIC

L

ynn Kuchera, a long-time member of PCA-SBR, passed away on June 22, 2015. During his tenure on the Board of Directors, he was a significant contributor to the Santa Barbara Region. He pretty much built the professionalized model still in use for managing advertising for Der Auspuff. At the time he served on the board, his leadership contributions were particularly helpful when the Region had to adjust the production rate of the newsletter for a short time. Lynn was born in Rapid City, South Dakota, in 1941. He learned to fly private aircraft when he lived in the Midwest and was a very proficient pilot. Lynn initially started his career as an engineer with Ford Motors and then went on to work for 3M Corp., which resulted in his assignment to Camarillo, California, in 1976. Eventually, the 3M facility in Camarillo closed, but by that time, Lynn and his wife, Evonne, were totally in love with California and had no wish to move away. Lynn went on to develop a successful career in real estate and property management. Lynn and Evonne entered the sports car world and started with a couple of sports cars from Chevrolet. Later, they acquired a Boxster. Their love affair with Porsche was building! They decided that a larger model was needed, and the C4S was the next

purchase. Lynn was as strong a convert to Porsche as there ever was. Eventually, a Cayenne also found a spot in the garage. He and Evonne fit in well with the Santa Barbara Region. Both are easy to make friends with, fun to be with, and are car nuts. They converted Marge and me to Boodles, the foundation for a decent Martini! We converted them to being F1 broadcast fans. Every race was jointly recorded, viewed and dissected in detail. Over the past five or six years together, we made numerous driving trips, traveling over the length of our state or as far as the east coast. Sometimes we’d tandem in separate cars, and sometimes it would be Lynn and me in the same car. We had some great runs. Lynn was a very good performance driver on the road and an easy travel companion. He had years of motorcycle touring experience and traveled as far as Alaska and to most of the National Parks on these bike trips. As a result, we were given access to some great roads and places around the country. Lynn and Evonne enjoyed Porsche Parades and built a whole new circle of Porsche acquaintances. So, following your next epic Porsche road trip, don’t forget to give a toast to Lynn Kuchera, a great Porsche friend (toasting with Boodles, of course)!

Santa Barbara Auto Group Makes It Happen for Make-A-Wish

For this year’s City of Santa Barbara 4th of July Parade, our region, once again, had a huge presence with 45 members and 19 Porsches taking part. Special thanks go to Santa Barbara Auto Group salesman and Santa Barbara Region member Walt Branscome for providing a very special Cayenne ride to Sam Helfand and his dad Mark Helfand. Sam is a Make-A-Wish kid who’s hoping to have his wish granted for a trip to the Aulani Disney Resort in Hawaii. Sam really enjoyed his “parade ride” on the 4th of July. Thanks again to SBAG and our friend Walt Branscome!
