SBR’s Grape Harvest Tour Saturday, November 21, 2015

The 2015 edition of the Grape Harvest Tour will lead us to some new and different wine stops. We’ll take a scenic drive up to the Santa Ynez Valley, taste some delicious wines, and enjoy a gourmet box lunch while taking in some gorgeous views. Our first stop is Lincourt Vineyard, nestled between Solvang and Los Olivos. We’ll do some tasting before heading on a drive along the back roads, winding our way to Pence Ranch, just outside of Buellton on Hwy. 246. There, we’ll stop to do some wine tasting and have a gourmet box lunch. You can enjoy a picnic on the charming outdoor patio or under the large gazebo up at the pond, taking in the breathtaking views. Finally, after lunch, we’ll head a little farther down the road to the Mediterranean-style Melville Vineyards and Winery to finish out our afternoon. We’ll meet at 9:15 a.m. at the Santa Barbara Auto Group. Departure will be promptly at 10 a.m. Your cost for the entire day, including the gourmet box lunch and SBR activity fee, is $25 per person. If you would like to wine taste with lunch at Pence Ranch, we ask that you add $10 tasting fee to your event fee, for a total of $35 per person. Pence Ranch has asked us to pay as a group, rather than individually. Tasting fees at the other two wineries are extra and your responsibility to pay on the day of the event. The Grape Harvest Tour is limited to 80 people. Please fill out the registration form below, marking your lunch choices for each participant, and mail it with your check payable to PCA/SBR to: Robert Watt, 308 Zink Avenue, Santa Barbara, CA 93111 Questions? rwatt@villagesite.com No refunds for cancellations after November 13, 2015.

ptimists say, “The glass is half full.” Pessimists say, “The glass is half empty.” Engineers say, “The glass is too big.” For me, the glass is more than half full most of the time.

Special Olympics World Games were held in Los Angeles recently. 6,500 athletes from 165 countries participated in 26 sports, ranging from cycling to tennis. Pamuela and I had the opportunity to help host the New Zealand and Saudi Arabian teams for a luncheon tour of the Camarillo Airport and environs. With our ongoing involvement with Ventura County Special Olympics, we knew the day was going to be magical for all.

MIKE HODSON

As the busses unloaded, the excitement of the athletes was palpable. Big smiles, high fives, and tons of selfies were the order of the day. Each team volunteered to perform their rally song, to the delight of the crowd. Local politicians made mercifully short speeches, praising the participants for their courage, perseverance, and sportsmanship. The coaches and trainers were phenomenal, helping everyone to join in the fun. Far from home, in a strange environment, both teams openly enjoyed a very unique day in a unique setting.

Reflecting on the event later, the mood was overwhelmingly positive. Despite the various degrees of physical and mental challenges faced by the athletes, they are embracing life and making the most of the talents and abilities they have been

given. Certainly, they all have days that aren’t so great; but to train, practice, and compete on a world stage with thousands of people cheering them on, those men and women are an inspiration. We should all be so brave. It is easy to get caught up in the daily grind, taking for granted the extraordinarily fortunate lives we lead. One day last week, a friend and I were complaining about having to wait too long for takeoff. We finally gave up and headed for the hangar. Suddenly, I burst out laughing, and my friend asked, “What the heck?” At that moment, I had realized how pathetically spoiled we were acting, and after another moment, we were both laughing at our foolishness. My dad was the penultimate optimist, and it served him well in life and in business. As a kid, I got tired of hearing the endless litany of the benefits of positive thinking and attitude, while wrestling with the typical “problems” of growing up, such as too much homework and strict parents. Poor kid! 20-20 hindsight, being crystal clear as always, tells me I should have listened more and sooner. Sometimes the best lessons take the longest. We are fortunate that our two wonderful children have taken many of our lessons to heart. Chris loves life and treats people the way we all wish to be treated. He has taught us as much as we have taught him. Julie, at 22, is independent, strong, and feisty. Gee, I wonder where she gets that? Both use humor to get them through challenges, and both believe brighter skies will come very soon. In his book The Happiness Advantage, author Shawn Achor writes, “Your brain at positive performs significantly better than it does at negative, neutral, or stressed.” I could not agree more.

A Note of Appreciation We wish to express sincere gratitude to the membership for all the special thoughts and prayers during Lynn’s illness. The beautiful response and support demonstrated for the celebration of his life was so uplifting to us as a family. Blessings to all. Evonne Kuchera

SBR ZONE 8 AUTO-X RETURNS TO CAMARILLO IN NOVEMBER ARTICLE BY STEVE FERRARI, SBR AUTOCROSS CHAIR

Saturday, November 14, 2015, the Santa Barbara Region will host a Porsche Club of America Zone 8 Autocross (for points) at the Camarillo Airport. However, you do not need to drive a Porsche or be a PCA member to run in this event. You will need a helmet, and your vehicle must pass a technical inspection. See the Zone 8 Autocross rules for more detailed information, especially if your car has been modified (http://tinyurl.com/Zone8Rules). I’d like to encourage all members, especially anyone who has never participated in an autocross before, to register and give this a try. The autocross course is set up on an unused runway at Camarillo Airport. Member volunteers create and lay out a series of twists and turns using orange traffic cones to mark the way. The course is designed for handling more than for speed. In fact, you probably won’t get going much faster than the top speed of your second

gear (about 50 mph). You’ll have an opportunity to drive your car the way it was designed to be driven, all the while learning about how it handles. You don’t need prior track or autocross experience, but if you want some free in-car coaching, instructors will be available to help you get started.

inspections must be done within the 30 days prior to the event and they are only available for a limited number of cars.

Once again, all registrations will be online. Using Motorsports.reg, simply click on this link: http://tinyurl.com/SBR-Nov-AutoX You’ll get detailed information on the event, see directions, and be able to register your car, provide contact info, and pay on-line. It’s quick and easy.

One SBR member, Pamela Dougherty, participated in her first autocross at our April event. She said: “This was the highlight of my year! I encourage any new autocross drivers not to be shy and participate. I felt so encouraged and welcomed by everyone there. It was such a nice feeling of camaraderie. I had the best instructor who guided me, making me feel very comfortable, even though I had never participated before. And the feeling while driving was just exhilarating. I cannot wait until the November event!”

For this event, we’re trying something new to save time: pre-event tech inspections. Thanks to two of our sponsors, Rusnak/Westlake Porsche in Thousand Oaks and Schneider Autohaus in Santa Barbara, you’ll be able to have your car tech inspected prior to the November 14th event. Contact Sam Abregel at Rusnak (805496-6500) or Henry Hinck at Schneider Autohaus (805-962-8015) to arrange an advance inspection of your car. All pre-

Also, for those who would like to volunteer to work the event but do not plan to drive, you should register on-line too, using the URL above.

I encourage you to register and drive this event. An autocross is something all members should experience. Isn’t driving the real reason you own a Porsche? This is your chance! =

PROGRESSI

VE DINNER 2015

[Camarillo, Simi Valley, Moorpark[

STORY BY DOREEN PANKOW EVENT PHOTOS BY JOHN ALFENITO

I

t was a picture-perfect day, and the Santa Barbara Region was indulging in three of the club’s favorite pastimes: driving Porsches, eating delicious food and enjoying the camaraderie of other PCA members. Our region has been holding a Progressive Dinner combined with a spirited drive since the late 1960s. The event includes stops at a member’s home for a first course of salads and appetizers, then on to a fine restaurant for the entrée and ending in a final stop at another member’s home for dessert and coffee. On Saturday, August 22nd, most of the 85 SBR members participating in the event gathered for check-in at this year’s meeting location. After the drivers’ briefing, we were ready to start the 45-mile cruise, including stops at two members’ homes and the restaurant. The first 24 miles of our drive took us from Westlake Village to Newbury Park through the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains via Potrero Road where we enjoyed driving over 40 Porsches on some fun, twisty roads. We then turned onto Lynn Road, taking us through Thousand Oaks to Olsen and Moorpark Roads, connecting to Santa Rosa Road and ultimately finding our way to the home of Pat & Cheryl Cable where the Porsche flag was flying out front.

First stop was Pat & Cheryl Cable’s beautiful home in Camarillo

Second stop the Market Broiler restaurant in Simi Valley

We were treated to a delicious variety of garden, spinach and fruit salads. Appetizers included prawns and cocktail sauce, fresh strawberries with a creamy dip, a cheese and cracker tray, and chips with salsa, avocado and onion dips. Iced tea, lemonade and water were also provided to cool us down on this warm summer afternoon. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the Cables’ beautiful home and spacious backyard. Continued on page 16

Third stop, Hilary & George North’s gorgeous house in MoorDE R

Continued from page 15 After a few comments by our president, Mike Hodson, we departed for the second leg of the event, a nine-mile drive to the Market Broiler in Simi Valley. There we enjoyed cocktails before the arrival of our entrées, which included caramelized salmon and scallops; snapper Veracruz and shrimp; New York steak; and chicken marsala, all served with tasty accompaniments. After enjoying a sumptuous meal, we drove another nine miles to our final destination, the beautiful home of George & Hilary North. Once inside, we were treated to a wonderful array of desserts, including a variety of cheesecakes, petits fours and lemon bars. For those of us with a yen for chocolate, there were also chocolate drop cookies and chocolate mints. Many of us sat outside on the patio and lawn to enjoy the comfortable evening temperatures and the good fellowship of friends and excellent food. It was a perfect end to another fun-filled, memorable SBR event. The club’s sincere thanks go out to our hosts, Pat & Cheryl Cable and George & Hilary North. DRIVE, WINE & DINE STORY BY DICK LANGE & HOWARD RUBENSTEIN EVENT PHOTOS BY DICK LANGE & RON TANABE

S

aturday, July 18, 2015, 73 SBR members, as well as Tom Brown, our Zone 8 representative, gathered at the Santa Barbara Porsche dealership to get started with our eventful day. A delicious array of pastries, fruit, juice and coffee were provided, and everyone had an opportunity to admire each other’s Porsches. People greeted each other and enjoyed conversation with their breakfast treats. Dick Lange climbed to the second story of the dealership to make remarks from the balcony, and photos were taken of the assembled group below. From the dealership, 40 Porsches left to caravan on Hwy. 154, taking us over the beautiful San Marcos Pass. It was a spectacular sight viewing all those Porsches in that majestic setting. We drove through the Santa Ynez Valley and on through Solvang. We took a left on Alisal Drive, which led us to a scenic country road through tree-shaded dales. The group arrived at the 101 for a short drive before exiting at Santa Rosa Road for a very scenic drive through the outskirts of Buellton. Although many of us have driven these routes before, they never cease to be an awesome experience.

Our first destination was the Lafond Winery, which has a beautiful setting. Many award-winning wines were offered for sampling in the impressive tasting room. A scrumptious spread of breads, crackers, various cheeses, olives, fruits and brownies accompanied the wine tasting indulged in by many of the members. The winery also has a well-stocked and nicely laid-out gift shop with a variety of items for house and garden. Many were seen browsing the stock and making purchases. From Lafond, we traveled through the remainder of Santa Rosa Road, another very pleasant country byway, to the town of Lompoc. A right turn onto H Street took us through the main part of town and then onto an exciting drive over the Harris Grade, culminating in our arrival at the 1876 stagecoach and train-stop town of Los Alamos. There we had a delicious lunch at Full of Life Flatbread, where everything is made with natural ingredients. The centerpiece of the dining room is a very large, flaming pizza oven. A serving table was laid, buffet-style, with a chilled, green gazpacho soup and two types of salad. The varied (and interesting) flatbread pizzas were delivered one at a time to the various tables in the room. After lunch, some of our members meandered through this historic town, while others started their leisurely drive home. Not only did we have a great drive, food and wine, but we also had an opportunity to reacquaint ourselves with some old friends as well as getting to know some of SBR’s newer members. All in all, it was a very successful and pleasant excursion. =

The Tech Report

Porsche’s Electronic Driving Aids BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor

ing control solenoids for each brake caliper, the engine’s electronic throttle body, and to the automatic transmission controls (if equipped).

For the 2010 model year, federal law required that every new light passenger vehicle sold in the US be equipped with electronic stability control as standard equipment. A typical stability control system consists of wheel speed sensors at each corner, a steering wheel angle sensor, and accelerometers that measure the vehicle’s yaw rate (rate of rotation about its axis) and lateral acceleration. These inputs and others are relayed to the electronic control units for the stability control/anti-lock braking system, engine, and transmission via an onboard high-speed data network. The signals are processed by the computers, and instructions are transmitted to various actuators, includ-

Fast forward to the present day, and the 2015 991 Turbo S is the poster child for electronic driving aids that do not hamper the efforts of an enthusiast driver but, in fact, enhance them. Early versions of PSM were high-tech for the time, but the system’s intervention was very obvious and harsh, with a noticeable stuttering sensation as the computer closed the throttle body and actuated various brake calipers as necessary to keep the vehicle on the road. Thanks to sophisticated modern hardware and complex control software, today’s PSM system is seamless in its operation and can make any driver feel like a hero.

Porsche’s first true stability control system, called “Porsche Stability Management” or “PSM,” was introduced as standard equipment on the 2000 996 Carrera 4 model. It was optional on the Carrera 2 and Boxster and also standard on the 2001 Turbo. PSM became standard equipment on the 987/997 (and Cayenne models), and its hardware and control software have continually improved ever since.

To effectively illustrate PSM function along with that of Porsche’s current crop of electronic driving aids, it is instructive to visualize a new 991 Turbo S being driven hard around a tight autocross course by a novice driver. The proud new owner of the 991 Turbo S is sitting at the starting line of the course, palms sweaty with anticipation while awaiting the starter’s flag. He or she has wisely depressed the “Sport Plus” mode button on the center console, which signals the engine (DME) control module to allow maximum throttle response and the PDK control module to enable optimal gear selection and the fastest shift speed. The threshold of PSM intervention is also raised to allow for higher handling limits before the electronics take over and save the driver’s bacon. Because a speedy getaway is crucial to a quick autocross lap, the driver uses the launch control function, holding his/her foot on the brake while flooring the accelerator pedal. The DME control unit holds engine RPM to the optimal setting for a drag race-style launch. The green flag drops, and the brake pedal is released. 516 lb-ft of torque is sent Continued on page 24

orsche has a reputation for building some of the purest, most driverfocused cars on the road, but the company has also been an innovator in the implementation of electronic driving aids. The 959 supercar of the 1980s is often mentioned in these pages, as it was the progenitor of the modern Porsche sports car with its electronically controlled all-wheel-drive and anti-lock braking system. Thanks to modern electronics and advanced hardware and software, today’s Porsches are more capable than ever at keeping their drivers out of trouble.

The Tech Report Porsche’s Electronic Driving Aids Continued from page 23 instantly though the drivetrain with violent force. The rear wheels are allowed to slip momentarily as the PSM control unit monitors the amount of traction available via the wheel speed sensors. Within milliseconds, torque is apportioned to the front wheels by using the magnetic clutch assembly of the Porsche Traction Management (PTM) AWD system. Due to excessive wheelspin, engine torque is reduced slightly by closing the electronic throttle body and incrementally retarding ignition timing and turbocharger boost. The tires hook up, and the car rockets off the line with sledgehammer force. The driver is blown away by the massive acceleration and immediately backs off the throttle pedal in anticipation of the first left-hand turn. In a completely “analog” car, suddenly closing the throttle while in gear can result in momentary lockup of the driven wheels (especially in conjunction with a downshift), which in extreme cases may result in a loss of control. Luckily for our driver, all PSM systems include MSR, which is the German acronym for “engine torque drag control.” The electronics detect the sudden decrease in the throttle angle input, and the throttle plate is held slightly open as necessary to reduce the shock to the driveline.

Having successfully made it through the first turn, our driver is now confronted by a slalom section that is demarcated by a single line of cones. As the driver weaves through the cones, the body stays flat, and the car turns in with a nimbleness that belies its curb weight of over 3,700 lbs. This is largely thanks to Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC). PDCC is a hydraulically-controlled, active, anti-sway bar system, which uses an engine-driven pump to generate hydraulic pressure. The end links of each anti-roll bar (or “sway bar”) are hydraulic cylinders, which are able to counteract body roll when activated.

The PDCC system taps into ride-height sensors at each corner, which are also utilized by the PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) electronically adjustable dampers (“shock absorbers” in American English). The PDCC control unit also considers steering angle, lateral acceleration and more to calculate how much hydraulic pressure to apply or bleed from each actuator to ensure minimal body roll and optimal tire contact patches. Rear wheel steering (see the January 2015 tech section for more info) and active engine mounts also aid slalom performance. (The special magnetic fluid inside the mounts automatically hardens during aggressive driving maneuvers to minimize drivetrain movement.) After the slalom section, a relatively long straightaway beckons. Our driver is thrilled to exercise all of the 560 horsepower that he or she paid for and does so with gusto. Warp speed is rapidly achieved, and the braking zone for a hard right-then-left chicane looms all too soon. Again, the driver is caught out by the severity of the turn and mashes the brake pedal with full force, while simultaneously turning the steering wheel to the right in an effort to make the turn. The impending lockup of the front wheels and the brake fluid pressure sen-

namics of classic, rear-engined Porsches. Thankfully, modern electronics are present to save the day. The sudden yaw movement of the heavy rear end is detected by relevant sensors, and before a spectacular pirouette ensues, the outside (right) rear wheel is braked hard to prevent the spin. This occurs seamlessly, and the driver is able to continue around the sweeper with minimal speed loss.

Another straightaway is entered, and once again both turbochargers spool to their maximum level. The next challenge is a relatively long, sweeping curve to the left, during which our intrepid driver determines that he or she has bitten off far too much and has entered with way too much speed. In a panic, the throttle is lifted and the brakes applied . . .while the steering wheel is turned to the left!

The lap is almost complete leaving only a hard right-left chicane is in between the car and the finish line. The driver eases off and steers hard to the right. The rearaxle steering system obliges and steers the rear wheels in the opposite direction as the front wheels, shortening the wheelbase and reducing the turning radius. Surprised by the sudden turn-in, the driver does not react quickly enough with a counter-steering movement to the left, and the rear end of the car momentarily slides wide to the left. The PSM briefly

brakes the left rear wheel to gather up the car, but not before a cone is slapped and knocked over. Well, computers are not perfect! Nonetheless, the car straightens out and shoots through the finish line, and the greenhorn driver is astonished by the competitiveness of his or her lap time. It must be said that the above is not meant to be a disparagement to novice drivers; in fact, the current alphabet soup of Porsche driving aids will enhance the ability of all but the most elite of professional drivers!

sor reading indicate that maximum braking effort is requested, and the PSM/ABS control unit modulates the front brake calipers as necessary to ensure maximum deceleration while preventing front wheel lockup. The steering angle and yaw/lateral acceleration inputs are extrapolated to indicate that the driver is desperately attempting to make a right-hand turn, but the lack of front end grip means that the car might understeer and plow straight on. PSM comes to the rescue, and the left front brake caliper is individually squeezed to help the car rotate. The car just makes the right-hand part of the chicane, and the driver saws the wheel to the left to complete the chicane.

Explore Coronado Island MLK Weekend 2016

NEW EVENT

The magical island of Coronado in San Diego Bay will be the destination of SBR members during the 2016 Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend, January 15 – 18, with an optional extra day on the 19th. Our host hotel for the weekend will be the Glorietta Bay Inn, a truly historic structure located across the street from the incredible Hotel Del Coronado. For details, visit its website at www.gloriettabayinn.com Our stay will include tours of the Del, an incredible food tour of local restaurants, a mesmerizing walking tour of the historic section of town (including the home of the Duchess of Windsor), and a trolley tour of the downtown and historic areas of San Diego. Three special restaurants have been reserved for our group meals, and there will be time for shopping and individual exploration of the area. The best part of these long weekend adventures that our club offers is the joy and friendship enjoyed by the participants. If you are interested, contact Nicolas Liakas at 818-706-6016 or nicolasliakas@ gmail.com. Do so at your earliest convenience as space is limited. You will receive a more detailed plan for the weekend as well as registration information and costs. Updated information will be posted in the OCT Der Auspuff. Join the fun; don’t miss out!
