SBR’s Grape Harvest Tour Saturday, November 21, 2015
The 2015 edition of the Grape Harvest Tour will lead us to some new and different wine stops. We’ll take a scenic drive up to the Santa Ynez Valley, taste some delicious wines, and enjoy a gourmet box lunch while taking in some gorgeous views. Our first stop is Lincourt Vineyard, nestled between Solvang and Los Olivos. We’ll do some tasting before heading on a drive along the back roads, winding our way to Pence Ranch, just outside of Buellton on Hwy. 246. There, we’ll stop to do some wine tasting and have a gourmet box lunch. You can enjoy a picnic on the charming outdoor patio or under the large gazebo up at the pond, taking in the breathtaking views. Finally, after lunch, we’ll head a little farther down the road to the Mediterranean-style Melville Vineyards and Winery to finish out our afternoon. We’ll meet at 9:15 a.m. at the Santa Barbara Auto Group. Departure will be promptly at 10 a.m. Your cost for the entire day, including the gourmet box lunch and SBR activity fee, is $25 per person. If you would like to wine taste with lunch at Pence Ranch, we ask that you add $10 tasting fee to your event fee, for a total of $35 per person. Pence Ranch has asked us to pay as a group, rather than individually. Tasting fees at the other two wineries are extra and your responsibility to pay on the day of the event. The Grape Harvest Tour is limited to 80 people. Please fill out the registration form below, marking your lunch choices for each participant, and mail it with your check payable to PCA/SBR to: Robert Watt, 308 Zink Avenue, Santa Barbara, CA 93111 Questions? rwatt@villagesite.com No refunds for cancellations after November 13, 2015.

The President’s Column
Lighten Up
I
t’s very easy to make a mountain out of a molehill. Somewhere, somehow, somebody makes a remark, gesture or reaction to something, anything – and all of a sudden, our dander is up, our blood pressure is up, and you can cut the tension with a knife.
MIKE HODSON
But what really happened? In our hyper-sensitive world, with seemingly everything being offensive to someone, we get vacuumed into the muck so fast it is scary. A meaningless, trivial, petty circumstance gets blown WAY out of proportion. Emotions are expended, impressions are formed, judgments are made, prejudices are reinforced.
I try to take the path less traveled, with the emphasis on “try.” We all interact with many people daily, many of whom are employees/associates/service providers at businesses we visit, mostly retail establishments. My goal is to brighten their day with basic friendliness and simple courtesy. It is safe to say that working retail in Southern California is probably not a trip on the gravy train. Financial survival is a day-to-day proposition, which means stress and worry are constants. A few extra seconds asking “How are you?” with a friendly smile can do a lot. You are not going to solve anyone’s problems, but you can make someone’s day more pleasant. During my elementary school days, I learned an invaluable lesson. Well, actually there were many lessons, but this one remains vivid in my memory. We walked to school every day, a grueling march of about one mile. One busy intersection was controlled by a male crossing guard, whom we all decided was
the perfect grumpy old man. At dinner one night, my sister and I complained to our parents about this fellow. “Why do you say he is grumpy?” our parents asked. “Have you ever said ‘Hello’ or tried to be friendly?” The very next morning, we followed our parents’ suggestion. Mr. Grumpy became Mr. Friendly, thanks to the smallest bit of effort on our part. It was a life lesson never to be forgotten. Our son, Chris, is the public relations magician. Regardless of the situation, his sincere smile, handshake and courtesy win over the toughest boiled eggs out there. One of his secrets is to politely address people by their name, either by reading it or inquiring. Some folks are surprised by his warmth and initially are unsure how to react. His genuineness and honesty quickly win them over. As car/motorcycle/airplane enthusiasts, Chris and I talk to many different groups from all walks of life. The first time he approached a group of “bikers,” I was concerned. His first words were, “That’s a beauty,” referring to one of the bikes. The guys were taken aback, not knowing how to react in the “de rigueur” biker stereotype. Within a few seconds, Chris was gathering brand/year/model info on the bike and was accepted as an enthusiast. The whole world would be a much better place with a similar approach to life. Treat people as you wish to be treated. Accept, understand and respect others, and hopefully, they will respect and understand you. Look at the big picture, resist the urge to be petty, and keep trivial matters in perspective. PCA is all about unconditional acceptance. Our playing field is level. The friendships we develop are for all the right reasons. Keep these values in mind as we venture into the world. Attitude and enthusiasm are contagious, so let’s make ours worth catching!

Pre-Concours Detail Clinic
at Lavaggio STORY BY TARA BRUNDRETT PHOTOS BY DUSTIN TROYAN
A
gentle breeze made for a nice start to this year’s detail clinic. Eighteen participants in 12 Porsches, including eight first-time participants and two members from the LA Region, gathered on September 12, 2015, at the beautiful setting of Lavaggio in Agoura Hills. Dustin Troyan, Marketing Director, gave a brief overview of the services offered by Lavaggio. Then the Director of Service, Gabriel Gutierrez, performed a demonstration on a beautiful Blue Metallic 1978 930 Turbo. (Can anyone guess who owns this car?) We saw what orange peel looked like before and after Lavaggio provided the Art of Auto Detailing with their special touch. This made the car even more outstanding than before. As a light sprinkle began, it was a perfect time to head inside where a wonderful lunch was waiting for us. We all enjoyed the sandwiches, salad, chips and espe-
cially the cupcakes provided by Lavaggio’s bistro. The afternoon session kicked off with a great interactive conversation about the different divisions and parts of a car that can be judged. Special appreciation is due to Carolyn Ewbank for sharing her expertise from the perspective of a judge. Next, Kenny Brundrett offered a fun presentation on the different tips and tricks that have been successful for us. This includes the different brushes, Q-tips, and the important tool that you can never have enough of, towels. Sincere thanks go to all the first-time participants, Kenny Brundrett, and the wonderful staff at Lavaggio for making this yet another memorable event. We look forward to seeing all of you at this year’s Concours at Sherwood Country Club on October 18. It will be another exceptional Santa Barbara Region event. =
Hands-on demonstrations were a big part of this year’s Detail Clinic at Lavaggio
SBR President Mike Hodson (red shirt) takes more than a casual interest as Lavaggio Director of Services Gabe Gutierrez demonstrates the proper way to smooth out the finish on Mike’s 930 Turbo. The Detail Clinic attendees paid close attention, too. DE R

19TH ANNUAL PCA/SBR
CHILI COOK-OFF STORY BY DOREEN PANKOW EVENT PHOTOS BY JOHN ALFENITO
F
or the ninth year in a row, Jim & Terry Middlebrook shared their lovely home to host one of the club’s most popular events, the annual chili cook-off. Originally, for the ten years from 1997 through 2006, Bob & Jeanette Bassett hosted this friendly competition at their beautiful Camarillo home. The Middlebrooks took it over in 2007. Their spacious home and patio overlooking the valley provides a delightful setting for eating outdoors and enjoying the company of fellow members. Continued on page 16

19TH ANNUAL PCA/SB Continued from page 15 Eighty-one participants attended this year’s event, and the Middlebrooks’ circular driveway and auto court looked like a Porsche dealership with more than 40 gorgeous Porsches on display. Ten couples brought pots of chili to be judged in the cook-off, and the other members contributed an array of appetizers, salads, breads, and desserts to indulge in throughout the afternoon. The buffet line moved quickly thanks to the efficiency of our servers and to Phyllis Weaver, who coordinated all the kitchen activities. After feasting on all this scrumptious food and tasting the different chili recipes, the members voted on their favorites. All attendees served as judges, taking samples scooped from each separate chili pot and then evaluating and voting for their first, second and third preference. While the vote-counting team counted all the ballots, the rest of us sampled a tempting assortment of desserts and awaited the announcement of the winner of the much-coveted Lady Scoville Trophy. Once the votes were counted, a special presentation was made to Jim & Terry Middlebrook to thank them for hosting this enjoyable event for the past nine years. Then Terry Middlebrook offered a basket of gifts to Barry Weinstein, our official maestro of vote counting, which included “bribes” supposedly from all the participants who brought chili. It turned out that Terry provided all the bribe gifts this time, but she encouraged future chili entrants to bring their own for the vote-counting team next year. Terry then explained how our chili trophy came into existence. In 1912, Wilbur Scoville devised a method called the Scoville Organoleptic Test, which rated the heat pungency of chili peppers. So in 2010, Jim & Terry modified a recycled tennis trophy to include some Porsche parts as well as adding a chili pot, apron and wooden spoon AUSPUFF OCTOBER 2O15

BR CHILI COOK-OFF to the female figure that tops the wooden base. This became our first place trophy for all future chili competitions and was designated the “Lady Scoville Trophy” to honor Wilbur Scoville for his valuable contribution to the art of chili making. President Mike Hodson announced the three winners of the cookoff and presented each with special chili plaques. Of course, the chef in first place also took home the Lady Scoville Trophy. The outstanding cooks for 2015 are as follows: First Place, Terri Koskie; Second Place, Jim Middlebrook; Third Place, Rem Laan. It must be mentioned that this is Terri Koskie’s fourth time to walk away with the highest honor, and she has been in second place twice. Terri was our winner last year and truly deserves to retain the tiara she wore throughout the afternoon. Jim Middlebrook has also shown his cooking acumen by winning first place twice and second place three times. Those who once again made the 19th annual Chili Cook-off an overwhelming success included our hosts, Terry & Jim Middlebrook, and the “Chief Chili Wrangler,” Phyllis Weaver. Appreciation is due also to the following members who worked so hard to make this such an enjoyable event: Set-up of Canopies, Tables & Chairs: William Griswold, Mike Jacobs, Jeff Koskie, Ted Lighthizer and Gary Weaver; Parking: Bob Bassett, Jeff Merrick, David Stone and Larry Stoops; Chili Servers & Kitchen Helpers: Tara Brundrett, Iris Eisenbach, Houri Greko, Diane Griswold, Pamuela Hodson, Terri Koskie, Pam Lasnik, Lelia Lee, Becky Lundberg, Rosalee Merrick, Karla Michaels, Jessica Sato, and Susan Stone; Vote-Counting Team: Claus & Iris Eisenbach, Doug & Nancy Maletz and Barry Weinstein.

R.U.F.-IANS STUDY CENTRAL COAST HISTORY
STORY & PHOTOS BY NICOLAS LIAKAS
T
hirty-one Retired and Unemployed Folks (R.U.F.) took a journey to the past on September 17, 2015. We traveled to Nipomo to visit the historic Rancho Nipomo/Dana Adobe, now a museum and park.
The Dana Cultural Center is dedicated to the history, heritage, culture and ecology of the early 19th century Rancho Era in California. The Center provides a unique destination to understand life in California at that time and to discover the stories of those who left their footprints on the land in our past. Rancho Nipomo is a “must see” for anybody interested in early California history, rancho history and Spanish Colonial/Mexican history in our state. Rancho Nipomo was an important stopping point along El Camino Real, the stagecoach route, the mail exchange point and the trail to the gold rush fields in California. As the Dana family settled on the Rancho and grew on the central coast, it was increasingly involved with trade and politics. John Fremont stayed at Rancho Nipomo during the MexicanAmerican War, the conflict in which the United States gained control of California and much of the Southwest. The Dana family gave Fremont and his troops supplies for their trip to Santa Barbara. Leaving the Rancho, Fremont’s men approached Santa Barbara from what is now known as Foxen Canyon Road. The road was named after a local rancher who warned AUSPUFF OCTOBER 2O15

Fremont that a large Mexican force was waiting for him if he proceeded down the Gaviota coastline. Rancho Nipomo/Dana Adobe is one of the few historic sites in California that still has its original tallow works. Hides and tallow were key to the economy of ranchos between 1838 and 1849. The tallow works is an important part of the Dana story. When the Pacific Coast Railway extended its route from San Luis Obispo to the Santa Ynez Valley in 1882, the company built a station in Nipomo. The Dana family began selling plots of land the same year, and the town of Nipomo developed. So much learning can make one very hungry! Luckily, just a couple of blocks away we found Jocko’s, a legendary BBQ joint and a favorite of many SBR members. The restaurant was recently cited in Sunset Magazine for its excellent Santa Maria-style tri-tip. An entire dining room was reserved for our group. As soon as we were seated, the Once a month or so, R.U.F. meets for a talk, the laughter, the near-by journey of discovery. The Tech Report
The 2016 Cayenne GTS BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor
I
n recent years, Porsche has revived its “GTS” moniker to designate the overtly sporting version of each model line. There is now a GTS version of every Porsche save the Macan (though a Macan GTS is likely in the pipeline). Interestingly, the Cayenne GTS of 2009 spawned the first of the reborn GTS range, with the 997 GTS following suit for the 2011 model year. The typical GTS formula includes an uprated engine and chassis, along with aggressive body styling and a racy Alcantara (faux suede)-lined interior. Though this may seem like a half-hearted attempt to garner more sales, the magic of the GTS formula lies in Porsche’s brilliant chassis tuning and subtle, yet effective, engine tweaks. Porsche introduced its second-generation Cayenne GTS for the 2013 model year. It followed in its predecessor’s footsteps with a sharper version of the Cayenne S normally-aspirated V8, aggressive body styling, and a more aggressive suspension. It was an awesome performance machine, especially for an SUV. However, Porsche had to resort to “old school” hot-rodding tricks such as more aggressive camshafts and cylinder head porting to extract more power from the already highly-strung V8 engine. This meant that peak torque occurred at a fairly high (for a 4.8-liter V8) 3500 RPM. In the real world, the 20132014 Cayenne GTS was not much faster than the Cayenne S, though its handling and braking capabilities were considerably better. Every once in a while, market forces and government fuel economy regulations coincide to create an enticing automobile. For 2015, Porsche revamped the Cayenne lineup with a “facelift” and new engines for the S and GTS versions. As is currently en vogue, the V8 was replaced by a smaller, 3.6-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 engine for fuel economy and CO2 emissions purposes. AUSPUFF OCTOBER 2O15
DE R
24
The Porsche V6 is essentially the V8 with two cylinders lopped off, so many basic parts are shared between the two engines. Direct fuel injection affords a relatively high compression ratio, and the modern turbochargers spool quickly, which means that the peak torque output of 442 ft-lbs is realized at an incredibly low 1600 RPM and is maintained all the way to 5000 RPM. As it happens, the parents of your humble scribe just took delivery of the brand new 2016 Cayenne GTS shown on these pages. As I was eager to examine the current state of Porsche’s GTS line of SUVs (and to see my folks), I took a couple of extended drives in the new machine during my recent visit. This particular example is resplendent in Carrera White Metallic, which shows off the GTS’s gaping front grille that was appropriated from the Cayenne Turbo, along with wheel-arch extensions and aggressive side and rear skirts. Optional black 21” Sport Classic wheels complete the look and help to show off the massive red brake calipers, also from the Turbo. Ever the aesthete, my mother eschewed the standard GTS Alcantara interior for contrasting Cohiba Brown and black leather, though the standard sports steering wheel with shift paddles remains. Along
with contrasting Cohiba Brown stitching and seatbelts, carbon fiber trim completes the look of this elegant and sporty interior. Historically, Porsche has vacillated between the timeless charm (or ergonomic challenge, depending on one’s viewpoint) of the air-cooled 911’s interior, to the massproduced 986/996 cockpit. In the eyes of your author, Porsche has nailed it with its current crop of interiors. Yes, there are a lot of buttons, but the layout, quality of materials, and the feel of the buttons and switches are first rate, which makes the inside of any newer Porsche a fine place to be. The driving position of the Cayenne is perfect, as it affords the commanding view of the road that endears itself to SUV drivers, yet the low dashboard and seating position feel positively sports car-like. The seats are magnificent, and all of the primary controls readily fall to hand. The twin turbo V6 starts with a bark and settles into a smooth idle. One of the main downsides of any V6 engine is that its particular exhaust pulse pattern does not always make for a stirring exhaust note. The turbochargers further mute the tone of the exhaust, but the GTS comes standard with a sports exhaust system, the mufflers of which contain vacuum-actuated bypass flaps that automatically open at higher RPM or if the center console-mounted sports exhaust button is activated. The V6
The center console also features prominent “Sport” and “Sport Plus” buttons that enhance the engine’s throttle response and the shift characteristics of the standard 8-speed Tiptronic transmission. The threshold of the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) intervention is also raised in the sportier driving modes. The standard air-sprung suspension rides 24MM lower on the GTS and also has Sport and Sport Plus modes for its electronically adjustable PASM dampers. The Cayenne GTS is content to loaf along in “Normal” mode, with silky smooth upshifts and a relatively smooth ride. The optional 21” wheels with their low-profile tires do add harshness along with a hollow resonance that can be heard while cruising. However, one does not purchase a GTS for plush ride characteristics, so the PASM “Sport” mode is the most appropriate setting for typical driving. “Sport Plus” mode sharpens things even more; throttle response is quickened, and the Tiptronic S does a fairly accurate facsimile of Porsche’s PDK gearbox with the characteristic shove forward after each firm upshift. While in Sport Plus mode, the transmission dutifully holds the transmission in gear during deceleration, and the torque converter clutch remains locked to allow full engine braking as with a PDK or manual gearbox. The engine and transmission management software attempt to match engine RPM to wheel speed during downshifts, but the torque converter-equipped Tiptronic is not quite as adept as the PDK in this regard, with a noticeable lurch occurring during aggressive downshifts. However, tugging the shift paddles make shifting gears manually a pleasurable experience. From the initial run through the gears, the overwhelming sensation is that of riding a wave of torque with each throttle
opening. Turbo lag is virtually nonexistent, and the engine pulls hard to redline. Acceleration is so effortless that it is easy to inadvertently achieve triple-digit speeds while merging onto the freeway. Some may decry the loss of the higherrevving V8, but there is no question of which engine results in better real-world performance.
As such, the steering feel is superb for such a vehicle, and it weights up nicely in proportion to cornering load. My “test” vehicle was not equipped with the optional Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) active anti-roll bars or Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), but handling impresses nonetheless. The flat, straight roads of the suburbs north of Houston, TX, did not lend themselves to a proper test of the Cayenne GTS’s agility, but it was extremely composed during aggressive cornering on some cloverleaf freeway onramps, with negligible body roll and impressive grip from the massive 295-series tires at each corner. The braking performance of the Turbospec brake package is stupendous, though pedal feel is soft due to the compressible Akebono ceramic brake pads that are specified on all US-market Cayennes and Panameras. The ceramic pads exhibit less noise and brake dust than do the more aggressive semimetallic brake pads installed on Porsche’s sports cars, however.
As the sportiest of SUVs, the Cayenne has out-handled its competition since its inception. The current 92A-chassis Cayenne (introduced as a 2011 model) shed 400 lbs from its predecessor’s curb weight, which only served to improve handling performance. The 2016 Cayenne GTS does tip the scales at around 5000 lbs, so it is no lightweight, but its cornering prowess belies this rotund figure. Interestingly, the Cayenne and Panamera platforms serve as the last bastions of hydraulically-assisted power steering in Porsche cars. (The 981 and 991 feature electric power steering — see the January 2014 issue of Der Auspuff for more info.)
Overall, the Cayenne GTS is a triumph for Porsche. The entire four-door lineup is now Porsche’s bread and butter, and the success of these profitable models has underpinned Porsche’s ability to return to top-level sports car racing. Furthermore, the physics-defying performance of the relatively large and heavy top-level GTS and Turbo models serves to highlight Porsche’s superlative engineering prowess. And, to top it all off, any Cayenne serves as a fantastic tow vehicle for your Porsche race car! =
